1. Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
After contemplating which company would be best suited to distribute my crime film
‘Mobster from Manhattan’, I have chosen ‘Miramax’.
Though they have not distributed a large number of crime films, the material that
they have has proved highly successful at the box office. For example, included in
Miramax’s top 12 most successfully grossing films are ‘Pulp Fiction’ by Quentin
Tarantino, earning a total gross of $107,928,762 and Martin Scorsese’s ‘Gangs of
New York’ which grossed $77,812,000 overall. Therefore, having distributed two
highly successful crime films alongside two highly influential directors, more gritty
crime films would most likely be beneficial for their company and I believe I have
spotted a potentially profitable venture as it would also generate a large profit.
Furthermore, Miramax’s target audience has always been older and more mature
audiences, with films such as Joel and Ethan Coens’ ‘No Country for Old Men’ which
grossed $74,283,625 overall. Therefore, they are experienced at distributing films
with this specific type of actors and directors.
Miramax has always been known to nurture new talent for upcoming films. For
example, ‘Sex, Lies and Videotape’ was Steven Soderbergh’s Directorial debut and as
a result, it would be appropriate that Miramax would consider distributing my film as
it my first venture into feature films.
