How does your media product represent particular social groups
1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
2. • My music magazine was set up to attract a particular social group, this being indie/
music lovers. These music lovers are predominately in the age range of 16-30
making me demographic quite a young age range. My magazines presents this
social group in different way in my magazine, for example the representation of
gender, on my front cover a pretty, quirky women is used, this could attract male
readers through the use of direct mode of address, the front page is very simplistic
which could attract the ‘arty type’ who have connections with indie music lovers.
• I wanted to convey Sophie in a different way from the normal representation of
women in the media, instead of innocent and exploitative I had Sophie stand in an
open posture to connote dominance which I feel goes against the normal
stereotype of women in the media, I feel this will attract a female audience as it
doesn’t down grade women and women will be attracted to read something that
promotes femininity and strength.
3. • Using my front cover I attracted a female audience due to uses and
gratifications theory suggesting that people search for their own personal
identity within the media. However a lot of magazines I researched
sexualised females to gain a wider male audience. All my models used in
my magazine fit in with the target audience bracket, which I believe helps
to address my social group.
• Another way in which I attracted my demographic was through the use of
colloquial language, I made sure that on my double page spread the text
was easily readable, I feel this will attract my age range as it doesn’t mean
they have to spend time trying to decipher what the text means/ is saying.
I also used little text throughout and focused a lot on images as I feel my
magazine is informative but not over crowded with information. I feel this
will attract my social group as it’s an easy read.
4. • To make sure my magazine wasn’t deemed as sexist I used a male up and
coming indie artist for my double page spread I felt this would balance the
gender ratio and would attract both males and females.
