More and more people are talking about sustainability, yet fewer and fewer know what it means in practice or how it might be realised.
John Bullock looks at the way that the 'realpolitik' of sustainability has developed and shifted, and how the major influencers within the construction industry are seeking to integrate sustainable practices into building design.
And what will be expected from the lighting industry when a robust sustainability agenda drives building specification?

Several chief executives in Davos were keen to show that
THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY is not about corporate social responsibility.
McKinsey managing director Dominic Barton says "We have to demonstrate
this is a win win, that you can make money
and help use resources more sustainably," he said.
"This is not CSR or a sideshow, but is fundamental.

QUANTITIES OF AVAILABLE PCB SCRAP
50,000 tonnes of PCB scrap generated in the UK
300,000 tonnes of PCB scrap generated in Europe
PERCENTAGE RECYCLED
Only 15% of the 50,000 tonnes per annum is subjected to any form
of recycling, the remainder being consigned to landfill
Approximately 60% of the 42,500 tonnes per annum is landfilled
within the total redundant equipment package
A significant proportion is exported illegally.
94. Energy Management
Some interesting data is presented (Fouquet and Pearson, 2006) which shows
how the huge improvements in the lighting efficiency and the cost of lighting
have driven demand ever higher, which of course raises the issue as to what
happens as very efficient LED lighting becomes widely available.
