Body Dysmorphi Beauty And The Aspects Of Beauty
Growing up we have been told that "It's the inside that counts because beauty is only skin deep."
And yet the media contradicts this idea every day. If looks don't make a difference, or even matter,
why are such a significant number of women hurting themselves since they're troubled with the way
they look? Why air brush away our flaws? This is on the grounds that our general public has
developed a specific self–perception that being sexy or beautiful is no longer about being yourself,
it's in fact a long way from the normal average women size twelve. The ridiculous standard of
perfect that women are brainwashed with, has caused many to developed "Body Dysmorphia." No
women, child, or young lady should feel the need to look in a mirror for hours trying to fix
something they feel should not be there whether it be a freckle they don't like or how much tighter
their clothes are compared to others. No person should turn to cosmetic procedures, dieting,
changing the way the dress, or even their hair just because they want to look like the person on the
cover of a magazine. The absurd so called ideal body measures shouldn't exist. The idea that being
perfect or sexy means that your thighs can't touch, your hair has to be long, have to be a size double
zero, and your waist can't be as wide as your hips shouldn't exist. The media needs to develop
realistic self–perception alongside the possibility that ladies of every ethnicity, shape, and size are
excellent, not simply ladies who

The Negative Effects Of Social Media On Body Image
"Experts believe that today, more than ten million women and girls suffer from anorexia, bulimia, or
related illnesses, with the onset of such problems occurring in patients of younger and younger
ages." (Ballaro, 2017, p.) When I was 13 years of age, I started to have a very negative self image. I
hated what I looked like, and this eventually lead me to having an eating disorder. I would go online
and do research on different diets and how to get a thigh gap and how to lose a large amount of
weight in the shortest amount of time. I would also go on social media and find pictures of
underweight girls as 'motivation' to help me stay focused on losing too much weight. We are greatly
influenced by the unrealistic expectations of how we should look from social media platforms such
as Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. Even though other factors may play a part in having a low
body image, social media negatively affects body image because what is popular on social media,
such as pictures of thin models, can be harmful to a person's body satisfaction.
Initially, when people start a social media account, it is usually not about the amount of followers
they have or how many likes they can get. It is about keeping in touch with the people they cannot
usually interact with on a consistent basis. It is about making sure they do not miss out on anything
in the other person's life and not letting others miss out on things happening in your life. People
commonly do this by uploading

The Pundits Aversion Of Hollywood Movies
In the mid twentieth century, ladies venerated motion picture symbols, for example, Marilyn
Monroe and Camille Clifford. Around 1900s, Camille Clifford began the pattern where the models
of excellence were set around 140 pounds, at 5'4" feet tall. In those days, the perfect female body is
by having a littler mid–area (e.g. hourglass perfect/bodices). Marilyn Monroe's modest waist and
apparently huge bust line activated female fans to begin to connect with additional on physical
exercises. The upheaval on slim looking depiction of self–perception started in mid 1960s (e.g.
Design symbol, Twiggy). Most western social orders experience huge weights on people to
acclimate and accomplish the dainty perfect. This impact by broad communications influences
pretty much anybody including guys and females, grown–ups, young people, and youngsters.

Pundits' aversion of Hollywood movies' is because of the straight–line plots of the movies in which
nothing is left misty, unsettling or unexplained and each shot is supported by a connection to

In this nation individuals for the most part view movies for simple amusement. Numerous late
movies bolster this generalization of American society. Enhancements, viciousness, and performers'
names (in spite of level of ability) are frequently real topics that convey Americans to the films.
While most Hollywood movies are made only for amusement esteem, numerous remote movies are

The Dark Inside Character Analysis
How does the author encourage virtue or corruption? In the book, The Dark Inside, the author Jeyn
Roberts encourages virtue through her character's actions. Roberts encourages virtue through the
insincere actions within a character. Roberts encourage virtue through another character dishonest
actions. Lastly, Jeyn also encourages virtue through cowardice actions in a character. In Dark Inside,
Jeyn Roberts inspires the reader to be virtuous. To begin with, Roberts encourages virtue through
the insincere actions within Twiggy. According to the text, "Thanks for all your help.' Mason turned
to go. Oh. Mr.Dowell? One last thing. Mason turned back to face Twiggy. 'Yeah? The coffee mug
sailed through the air, smashing into the side of Mason's face. "Trust no one.' Twiggy said" (Roberts
138, 139). This demonstrates that Roberts teaches to be virtue. The evidence proves Twiggy's
insincere actions because it shows that Twiggy was not being genuine or real with Mason. Robert is
teaching the reader to not follow Twiggy's actions to have virtue and to be sincere. Not only does
Roberts teach the reader to not be corrupt through Twiggy's insincerity but also through Daniel's

Media's Influence On American Culture
A diseased representation of women, advocated by the media, is detrimental to the American culture
(Chittom, N. Page). The National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA), asserts an upsurge in eating
disorders, inadequate self–esteem, and depression cases are attributed to this illustration (Chittom,
N. Page). The portrait of American beauty has transformed greatly over the years (Chittom, N.
Page). At the dawn of the twentieth century, beauty centered around abundant chests and minuscule
waists, accentuated with tight corsets, but in the 1920's, this image changed to glorify flat chested
"flappers" (Chittom, N. Page). By the 1950's, the shapely figures were once again popular, but in the

1950s Fashion Essay
Fashion for women has become a major part of all decades and has changed constantly from day
one. From one decade to another the trends and styles of clothes alternated drastically. The 1950's
started with long, flowy dresses. 1960's moved to more playful, knee–length dresses. 1970's was
tight fitting clothes and platform shoes. 1980's was all about bright colors. 1990's included thrift
shop clothes and more of a hip–hop style. Lastly, the 2000's is all about short skirts and movie
orientated clothes. There have been many throwback outfits but mostly from the 1980's till this day.
The main influence of Australian fashion in all decades was overseas trends and influences.

This fashion trend was known as the 'unexpected'. Mary Quant's fashion moved away from the
'tacky' look and became more playful and a youth style. This included short and patterned dresses
that made a statement. This new fashion trend was also accompanied by a famous woman named
Twiggy. Both Mary Quant and Twiggy worked together, they were also seen together in dresses and
skirts that hit at around six or seven inches above the knees. Very scandalous for the time, the mini
quickly made its way onto magazine covers and in almost every advertising campaign of the decade.
"The Chelsea Look" was made popular by Mary Quant, the designer, but it was modeled by Twiggy,
the icon.
1970's
When the 1970's first hit polyester was a popular material and so was bright colored clothes. Women
were wearing tightly fitted pants with platformed shoes as this decade was all about having fun. In
the early 1970's fashion was a mixture of some of the best clothes from the '60's and was
exaggerated and perfected. The style of the 70's in some ways complimented the hippies of the time.
Towards the end of the 1970's almost every woman had a cowl neck sweater along with tunics,
culottes, and robes. The color of clothing in this decade had almost disappeared by 1979 as more
earth colors and greys became more of the casual clothing worn. Fashion was greatly influenced at
this time by music. The followers of music rock bands dressed in

Mary Quated Essay
The 1960s was a decade of change, it was the time of the 'Swinging 60s', it made a great impact on
design and culture so much so that it can be seen today also. In this essay, I will talk about Mary
Quant (Early 60s) in London and Yves Saint Laurent (mid to late 60s) in France. I will compare
them and their backgrounds to show how they became iconic in the history of fashion through
events that took place in the 60s. At the time of Mary Quant, the youth culture in London was
demanding to be distinguished separately as a sub–culture. She took this opportunity and opened her
own store caller Bazaar (1955) to imprint a type of clothing specially for her age group. She quickly
gained commercial success and popularity. Yves Saint Laurent, on ... Show more content on

all colors in one palette. She introduced the concept of fun "eye crayons in a tin", "sparkly nail

Mass Media 's Influence On Society
Over the years mass media has become more available and favored by society through avenues such
as magazines, television, newspapers, print ads, internet, and including social media. According to
U.S. Census Bureau (2007), individuals spend nearly a total of 3,518 hours of their time on mass
media outlets. Mass media has become widely popular among individuals, in particularly young
adults.73% of U.S adults aged 18–29, have been reported regularly visit at least one of these outlet,
and 42% use more than one (Duggan & Smith, 2013). Mass media has been an outlet for individuals
in society to send and receive information. It has given individuals the ability to communicate and
share news amongst each other. Henceforth, mass media outlets such as social media have allowed
individuals within society the ability to interact with one another. In America, as people interest in
media has grown so has individuals interest in their body image (Cash, 2004).Body image is
extensively publicized in mass media (Cash, 2004). Researchers have questioned this phenomenon
of the impact of social media on individual's perceptual of body image. The purpose of this study is
to examine mass media portrayal of body image which has influence individual beliefs and desires
to be "thin" which has resulted in an unrealistic ideal societal body image.

Summary Of Death Of A Moth By Dillard
Dillard uses a fragment to show her reluctance as she accepts that they will not understand what
really is given up. This fragment makes a striking contrast with the previous sentences in the
classroom scene which consists of continuous questions and run–on questions. Without stating it,
Dillard shows that she has given up and will continue to feel as if she is still alone in her situation.
With the constant grammatically incorrect sentences Dillard writes in, she ultimately creates a
unique voice that results in a more personal essay for the reader to connect to. Dillard makes
striking choices of diction to craft a stronger argument in "Death of a Moth." One of her significant

Themes In Away By Michael Gow
Away, by Michael Gow, is a play about the journey of three Australian families from very different
socio–economic backgrounds, each with their own issues to resolve, on holiday during the summer
of 1967/68. Going 'away' on a summer holiday was a great Australian tradition, have fun and relax
with the family.
Vic, Harry and Tom find it very hard to relax as they realise that this may be the last time they can
go 'away' together as a family because Tom is dying from cancer. Roy and Coral cannot get 'away'
from the pain that permeates their lives after the death of their son in the Vietnam War. Gwen, Jim
and Meg don't appear to enjoy the company of others and are unable to get 'away' from the fighting
that goes on between them. By going 'away' gives all the characters a chance to heal and start ...

The story appears to be very simple but there are many layers of techniques and themes which
clearly show the journey that each character has to take. 1968 was also a year in Australia's history
where there was a great deal of political and social change. The most significant event of that time
was Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War. The title of 'Away' is used as a metaphor for the
journey of life and the progress of families and a nation.
The play also touches on the subject of Australia's attitude towards mental health at that time when
we see that there is little sympathy for the suffering that Coral is going through after the loss of her
son in the Vietnam War. Her husband, Roy, actually shows that he is embarrassed by her depression
and really does not support her he even threatens to "arrange shock treatment" for her. We witness
Meg rebelling against traditional female occupations at that time when she jokingly tells Tom that
she wants to be "an engine drive", an occupation that women were not allowed to

Essay on How the Ideal Body Image Has Changed Through History
How the ideal body has changed over time and what the future holds This painting was created in
1509 and a section from the plaque below the painting reads "This mysterious painting is meant to
be an allegory of Poetry, whose symbols – the flute and the pouring water – are shared between two
nude women of ideal beauty. These unreal figures exist only in the imaginations of the two men they
inspire." This painting shows that just over 500 years ago the ideal body was one of robust and
physically larger women. This painting was created in 1863, just over 350 years after the painting
above. This shows that in over 350 years the ideal body did not change as this painting still depicts

This showed that the idea of changing a woman's figure had started in the early 1800's but for quite
a long time these two 'ideals' ran alongside each other. Some women were starting to alter their
physical appearance whereas many other women had bodies that were similar to the 'ideal' larger
body which has been commonplace since the 1500's. In the 1920's, after World War 1, active
lifestyles were dominant and body fat became associated with being self–indulgent. Adding to this,
women were starting to gain more independence and so to reflect this women desired a freedom of
movement and comfort in the clothes they wore. Anne Bolin, an anthropologist at Elon College in
North Carolina explains that, "during... the 1920's... the ideal shape for women de–emphasised their
reproductive characteristics such as nourishing breasts and wide, childbearing hips". Due to the
emergence of the flappers, dresses skimmed over the hips, rather than accentuating the waist and
some women bound their breasts to create a more androgynous silhouette. This was the first time
that women embraced something other than the traditional womanly figure seen previously. With
the flappers it was generally the first time that women made a conscious decision to try obtain a thin
body, something that changed the ideal body for many generations to come. Although the idea to
embrace thinness occurred in the 1920's for a short while afterwards in the 1930's and 1940's

Beauty : The Definition Of Beauty And Beauty Standards
Beauty Standards
Beauty standards have been a major issue for many years now and women have been willing to
change their bodies over and over to please themselves and others. Beauty standards are often
defined in terms of hairstyles, skin color, and body size. The measures involved in having to live up
to these standards are often risky in nature. For decades, what is seen as beautiful is centered around
a women's weight and size. Today, that standard is often defined as being thin. Women often resort
to drastic means to attain that ideal image. However, achieving these standards can be expensive,
can lower self–esteem and can be a threat to a woman's health and life.
There are many beauty standards but weight and body size is slowly becoming the main focus.
These standards give a false sense of hope of having the "perfect body." Instead of letting beauty
standards be socially accepted, people should be aware of the harm they cause. Celebrities are role
models to various people around the world and they are criticized for their appearance. Many of
these celebrities go out and get plastic surgery, Botox injections, and Silicone implants. People that
a lot of money and higher status are more likely to be able to live up to these standards. Some
women are willing to sacrifice comfort and tolerate the pain to achieve them.
Ever since slavery, the size and shape of a woman's body has been important. in the seventeenth

Societal Pressure to be Thin
"To be happy and successful, you must be thin," is a message women are given at a very young age
(Society and Eating Disorders). In fact, eating disorders are still continuously growing because of
the value society places on being thin. There are many influences in society that pressures females
to strive for the "ideal" figure. According to Sheldon's research on, "Pressure to be Perfect:
Influences on College Students' Body Esteem," the ideal figure of an average female portrayed in
the media is 5'11" and 120 pounds. In reality, the average American woman weighs 140 pounds at
5'4". The societal pressures come from television shows, diet commercials, social media, peers,
magazines and models. However, most females do not take into account of the beauty photo–shop
and airbrushing. This ongoing issue is to always be a concern because of the increase in eating
disorders. A female should not feel insecure with her body when she is comfortable in her own skin,
whether or not she weights 130 pounds or 150 pounds at 5'5". According to Rehab's study of the
evolution of the female figure over one hundred years, "the body shapes of the most admired models
have remained consistently slimmer than that of the average American woman." Due to the
significant increase in mass media throughout the twentieth century of the United States, there has
been a noteworthy impact on the popular image of women. A woman being dissatisfied with their
body is a everyday trend around the world where as

Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? By Joyce Carol...
Social Landscape Change
The short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates was
published in 1966, which in turn happened to be one of the most complicated decades in history. A
time of misdirected hatred, recreational substance usage, and a cloak of death surrounding the
world. As a result, the social norms of the time period are expressed in Oates short story through
language, imagery, and allusions.
Oates begins her story much like any other author showing a dysfunctional family, with depictions
of dysfunction, rebellion, and mindlessness of those who are most important. Connie, the main
character, is shown as the redheaded step child so to speak, she is neglected by her father and
receives nothing but negativity from her mother. Now, there is always the argument that Connie is
an immature teenager who has not yet had to grow up and face the music of responsibility; however,
the lack of defined parental structure in her life hinders her capability to flourish as a young adult.
For example, Oates writes "Their father was away at work most of the time and when he came home
he wanted supper and he read the newspaper at supper and after supper he went to bed. He didn't
bother talking much to them, but around his bent head Connie's mother kept picking at her until
Connie wished her mother was dead and she herself was dead and it was all over." (Oates, 468) The
excerpt describes the relationship of Connie and her parents to a tee with the description of the
ignorance of her father and the personal anguish with her mother. Oates uses language to paint the
picture she wants the reader to see and follows through on the image she has manifested.
Furthermore, Oates uses descriptive language throughout the short story which further develops the
characters and the relationships between Connie and everyone else. For example, when Oates writes
about Connie's sister, June, she depicts her as "plain" and "chunky" neither of which sound
appealing; however, when Connie is described she is clearly labeled "pretty and that was
everything". With the usage of descriptive language, Oates is also creating the cookie cutter rival
image. From the beginning, Oates has given one sister and advantage that

Influences Of The Anti Establishment Movement
This investigation will examine the influences of the anti–establishment movement, major events
like the sexual revolution and the how media and pop culture influences fashion in the 1960's. Every
decade has a signature look but the real question is how they got that look. To look further into this
subject one may need to investigate major happenings. This is what this paper looks into. The
greatest influences to fashion in the 1960's are analyzed in this paper. Each chapter goes into depth
on each influence and how it all relates back to fashion. Fashion is one way of self– portrayal and it
can define a time period and a person. The important part is to look into the behind the scenes aspect
of fashion and the cultural and social integration into the fashion industry.
By looking deeper into the subject I have concluded that fashion is influenced by the happenings of
a certain time period. Each time period has its own definitive style which is brought out through
fashion. It can be concluded that social and cultural influences are the driving force behind fashion
and how it is portrayed in each decade.

Women : The Impacts Of The Roaring Twenties
The 1920's which was also called the Roaring Twenties was a era of economic prosperity and
dramatic social change. The 19 amendment that was ratified on August 1920 gave the right of
women to vote and the impact of World War I resulted in women questioning traditional morals and
values, becoming rebellious. When men left for the war it caused women to have new jobs such as
working in factories. Also, "the number of women attending college rose to 10% of the population
by the end of the 1920's." Due to women having the opportunity to have jobs and go to college
women became more mobile. The corset limited women to be mobile in this era which caused the
production of coresets to quickly decline. Less women wearing corset made their figure to be more
boyish and straight. The women of this era was called the Flappers, free spirited women,
representing the new change of how women looked. The Flappers "lacked hips, breasts, and a
defined waist". They would dress in dresses above their knee and ankle showing more legs and
having bare arms. They would also stray away from having long hair and cut their hair into a bob to
symbolize freedom and independency. As a reason of women questioning traditional values they
began to drink, smoke and be more sexual in this era. The 1920's was also the age of Jazz which
influenced women to go out and dance and women having more flamboyant and exuberant moves.

Twiggy: Unrealistic Images Of Bodies In Advertising
People have always said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but somehow media, specifically
advertisement companies, have grabbed ahold of the definition of beauty and what beauty itself
should look like. In the mid–1960s a model named Lesley Hornby, nicknamed Twiggy, became a
very popular celebrity. Although Twiggy was only a teenager, she was a huge hit in the modeling
industry; she was very tall and extremely slim. Her body resembled a twig; hence her nickname. She
achieved international popularity leading some to believe that she was the start of a super model
trend: tall and thin. Twiggy was very lanky, but her body was completely natural, unlike today

Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist who came up with a theory called the hierarchy of
needs. Maslow's theory stated that, "People are motivated to achieve certain needs. When one need
is fulfilled a person seeks to fulfill the next one, and so on," (McLeod). According to this theory
humans need to have their physiological, security, social, and esteem needs taken care of in order
for them to be able to accomplish any self–actualizing needs. Currently advertisements that are
marketing a body that is highly unrealistic for most people to achieve, makes it so that those people
are wanting to focus on making their body better instead of making their personality better. The
media's promotion of unrealistic images of men and women has a negative effect on people because
it creates an unachievable image of beauty. Instead of using manipulated and unrealistic images to
promote a product, advertisement companies should come up with a way to advertise all different
sizes of healthy men and women so that people can look at an advertisement photo and be able to

Over the past 56 years, fashion has changed a lot. In 1960 women were inspired by many famous

Kennedy's style was clean, simple, well fitted, with matched accessories. She wore dresses without

the knee hemline. The style didn't last long before the 50s pencil dress loosened up and turned into
the "shift dress" in 1963. Shift dresses were casual wear for home, running errands, going to the

Anything above the knee was a "mini skirt."
Colors and prints were at first, inspired by the pop art and modern art movements.Checkerboard,

Body Image: The Story Of Whitney Way Thore
"I don't really care what I look like that much, and I think women out there should just be happy
with the way they look. They shouldn't really try to conform to any kind of stereotype. Just be happy
and hopefully healthy.–Rebel Wilson" In this essay I will talk about accepting positive and negative
image first I am going explain what body image is, then I will give some reasons why social media
effects positive and negative criticism, and finally I will tell you the story of Whitney Way Thore.
Body image is defined as a person's opinions, thoughts, and feelings about his or her body and
physical appearance. The self–image is what you see or think you see in the mirror and how you
picture yourself in your mind. Body image is an important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Many teens center a large part of their self–image on the way their body looks, a negative self–
image may be linked to depression, anxiety, and eating disorders, and mental health problems.
People with eating disorders generally have a negative body image and social media doesn't help
because they are constantly comparing themselves to other people. In American society, messages
about what the perfect body looks like are constantly delivered by the mass media. Television,
movies, magazines, the Internet, and advertisements show us what society views as a perfect body–
the ideal we should strive for. In the 1920's two major changes happened in women's lives the first
thing was they got the right to vote and there was a mass production of clothes. With these changes
no one was alike anymore and that's when self–image came about. As the years went on self–image
became more important and fashion models set standards of how people were supposed to look. For
example Twiggy was 5'7 and weighed 91 pounds, many teenage girls tried to achieve the "Twiggy
look" by dieting and that made many people have a negative body–image. Today's models haven't
changed much they still are trying to achieve the "Twiggy look" but now their body–image is more
positive and models take positive and negative criticisms

50's Fashion Analysis
A change in culture is always a constant aspect to society. While In 2013 the main fashion trend was
to wear sports clothing outside of the gym, in 2015 there was a more minimalistic view on the styles
of dresses. As the styles have changed, so have the views on the ideal life for a woman, starting
from being a mother to being someone who helps bring money to the family and works. A majority
of this has occurred from the style changing from 50's mostly modest blouses, skirts, and shirts to
dress pants and much more minimalistic clothing that either has no huge pattern or a very small
pattern. From these changes we can see how the view on women has changed, including their role in
society.

Part of these strict rules was the idea of conformity. Each woman was expected to follow the rules
of society, stick to the fashion trends, and keep their forms. And while this was a large part of
society, it was not the only part. World War II was over, and even with the soldiers coming home
and taking back their jobs, women still made up a third of the workforce. Cars were becoming more
popular as well, giving a quiet space for couples to spend time together and have premarital intimate
relationships, also providing the the new norms of the 60's and the Baby Boom. The ideal of a
woman staying at home to care for her family came from the Cold War, as well. Women were
expected to be a strong support of their family, and to promote the idea of consumerism by buying
more and exchanging their own goods for others. Movies and TV shows portrayed this type of
woman, from Leave it to Beaver to I Love Lucy. To this end, the 50's can be described as a feminist

Dark Inside Trust Quotes
The Significance of Trust
Trust is a valuable asset in which many people rely on everyday. Once trust is broken, it becomes
difficult to move forward in life and trust new people.Individuals must be cautious in the ways trust
will affect their life. In the novel Dark Inside by Jeyn Roberts, the main characters often
contemplate if there are other people going through the same traumatising moments as they are, and
whether they would be considered trustworthy. These characters go through many times of struggle,
confusion, and bravery in order to find out whether the path they travel on will lead them to victory,
or traps they will regret falling into. Mason's risky encounter with Twiggy, Aries' questionable
friendship with Daniel, and Clementine's great trust in her mother are all ways in which involve the
difficulty of trust. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although, a violent encounter changed his mindset just as he thought he was one step closer to a
reliable and trustworthy friend. "Had you fooled, didn't I?... I always liked a show. Better than
simply putting a bullet in your brain. I needed to see if I could convince you first" (Roberts 171).
This quote specifically proves that Twiggy betrayed Mason's trust by tricking him into thinking he
was a good man, while also violently cracking a glass mug over Mason's head. "We'll find you.
You'll never never hide long enough. We'll find you and kill each and every last one of you. All
alone. Run, Mr. Dowell" (172). Mason definitely knows his trust for Twiggy has gone out the
window after experiencing Twiggy's terrifying threats, which makes Mason contemplate whether
meeting new people would be a smart move, or just another mistake similar to the one he makes
with Twiggy. After all, Mason's terrifying encounter with twiggy changed his perspective on trust,
and made him realize that trust does not come easy, especially in the circumstance of

The Effects Of Media On Eating Disorders
Introduction As of the year 2013, an estimated 805 million people worldwide suffer from Hunger.
This number represents a group of people who suffer from food insecurity. This means they have
inadequate access to food and don't know when their next meal will be. This being said, an
estimated 70 million people worldwide suffer from some sort of eating disorders as of 2015 with 30
million being made up of Americans. Eating Disorders can be defined as any eating habit that
negatively affects ones overall health. Media has had a large impact on how both males and females
see their bodies. A majority of the people who suffer from eating disorders are young adults and
teenagers. This can be linked to the pressure put on them to have what society declares the "ideal"
body image. For most of history, the ideal female body was plump and voluptuous. This was before
the neolithic people settled down and created some of the first civilizations. Women with large hips
were "valued" because it meant that birth would be easier for them. They had "birthing hips" as they
are called today. This meant there was a higher chance that there wouldn 't be complications during
birth. When civilizations started to take root and grow, body images began to change. In Ancient
Egypt, thin slender women were preferred while in Ancient Greece, plump women with curves were
still the ideal. In fact, in Ancient Greece, women didn't have a "body image" to live up to, it was
men. This is one of

Media’s Influence on Adolescent Body Image Essay
Today's society is a consumers' society in which trying to obtain perfection is one of the fastest
selling businesses (DeLaMater Pg. 12). Mass media, advertising, and fashion industries are being
accused of feeding off females dissatisfaction with their bodies by portraying unhealthy thin role
models in order to sell their products. This unachievable physique and lifestyle has led today's
adolescence down a dark path of such extreme eating disorders as anorexia and bulimia. Although it
may sound nice to be societies perception of thin, there are consequences to these eating disorders
such as cardiac failure that lead to horrifying defects or even death.

Even if some girls were not classified as having an eating disorder 44% of adolescent girls believed
they were heavy and 60% were exercising excessively trying to lose weight. (Katzman et al. Pg.
287). Anorexia and Bulimia nervosa are deemed as medical illnesses or used to describe a
psychological disorder by of self–induced starvation in order to become thin. People that have either
of these illnesses have an excessive fear of gaining weight although they differ in their causation.
Anorexia is when the person starves themselves for days without eating and Bulimia is recurrent
binge eating, followed by vomiting, purging, fasting, the use of laxatives, diuretics, and over
exercising. Sadly they both cause great harm to the human body.
Even though most of the high morality rate for anorexia nervosa is due to suicide some of them are
due to cardiac complications. Some of the complications due to an eating disorder are moderately
benign such as bradycardia and hypotension. However some can cause lethal harm to ones heath
such as Reduced sympathetic response, ventricular fibrillations, arrhythmias, or cardiac failure.
Arrhythmias and Cardiac failure are the two most common of cardiac complications for
adolescences with eating disorders. Ventricular Arrhythmias are defined as an abnormal rate of

Leslie twiggy Hornby Essay
"At 17 Leslie Hornby took hold of the world. At 21 she let it go, she was the original waif, a
60's phenomenon a superstar. She was Twiggy" (Vogue). Leslie Hornby was the revolutionary
woman who changed the idea of beauty in the eyes of the fashion industry and the entire world.
Twiggy exemplified the androgynous mod look that swept America as it had Britain and much of
Europe in the 1960's. She healthily maintained a 5 ft 6 1/2 inch 90 lb body. Based on her thin figure,
a nickname of "Twiggy" was derived. Twiggy's popularity not only produced many
people who tried to look like her but also drastically increased the hourly wages of models.
She paved the way for current top models like Kate Moss, Elle MacPherson, ... Show more content

Twiggy's success soared when she made her first visit to America. On March 20,1967 the second
she stepped off the plane she was swarmed by fans, and was candy to the media's eyes. She was like
a fever that spread.
Everyone wanted a piece of her. Her pictures were everywhere. Twiggy's popularity allowed her to
charge revolutionary high prices an hour. She charged as much as $240 an hour opposed to a 50's
top model like Suzy Parker who only received about $40 an hour (Century of Models). Once again
Twiggy set the standard for 90's top models to earn outrageous sums of money. For example, the
90's Twiggy (Kate Moss) earns about 26.3 million dollars a year.
One reason for Twiggy's great success was that the public had never seen anyone like her. She had a
completely new look that took the entire world by surprise. During the 40's, long limbed, and
sophisticated was the trend. In the 50's, a more curvaceous womanly look (Marilyn Monroe) was in.
Twiggy set the 60's waiflike standard. What a leap from Marilyn to Twiggy. They were almost
completely opposite. Twiggy's influence is still seen on today's runways and television.
The current day Twiggy is Kate Moss. Her figure is strikingly similar (Twiggy 31–22–32, Moss 33–
22–35) (Century of Models). Remarkably, Twiggy's favorite thing to eat was ice cream, bananas and
hot fudge, she doesn't drink or smoke but "eats like a horse" (Time). Twiggy is

What Were The Effects Of Hippies In The 1960's
"Love not war" was a phrase often used by the early hippies. The hippies in the 1960's were
rebelling against government and war, caused by the social unrest that they felt, which ultimately
helped create a looser style of living for the modern day Americans. The reason that hippies came to
be in this time of age is because society was very strict and many people didn't support the
government. The effects that the hippies had on present day American culture is substantial. They
changed the way people dressed, the way people acted, the way people wore their hair, and the type
of music that became popular. Hippies protested for what they believed in. They didn't approve of
war because they felt it was unnecessary and that there should be peace between everyone. They
also felt displaced from the government and were against it. They said that the government was too
strict and controlling. They felt as if they had a loss of control over their lives. Hippies advocated a
profound, revolutionary stance against establishment (Galliano). There was a massive feeling of
social unrest throughout the people of America. Most thought that there was a pressure throughout
society to conform and follow the government. The hippies in the 1960's had many ... Show more

Susan Bordo Never Just Pictures Summary
In "Never Just Pictures," Susan Bordo discusses the obsession with body image in the media. She
begins with an example of Alicia Silverstone; when she appeared at the Academy Awards with a
little added weight, the tabloids viciously slammed her. Not only this, but the media regularly
attacks women with constant diet pill and plan ads in magazines, in newspapers, on TV, and even in
public areas. These advertisements usually have a woman clad in a bikini on the cover. Magazines
always have a new miracle diet advertised on their cover. The media affects young minds beyond
what one may believe.
She references a study that asked boys and girls of ages ten and eleven to rank drawings of kids with
physical handicaps; the kids that were overweight got the worst ratings. The ideas that children have
carry over into adulthood. She goes on to discuss eating disorders. Acceptable weights have fallen to
smaller and smaller sizes. Boney has become the new sexy in fashion. She references models like
Kate Moss, Trish Goff, and Annie Morton, all of whom have brought back the skinny look. She
mentions that men are beginning to look skinnier and skinnier in ads as well.

The skinny models create ideas of self–control, to live without desire. She states that an image of

The Symbolism Of A High End Luxury Brand
The typical impression someone leaves are often the first impression. Judgement based on
appearance is not a new concept. Scientifically proven, it takes a set amount of three seconds to
determine the type of impression the subject leaves. In those three seconds, appearance can be based
on physical looks and/or materialistic items. The symbolism of a high end luxury brand can imply
the social standing of a certain individual as well as their physical appearance. It is an invitation for
society to judge ones' appearance and attitude, solely based upon what type of brand they wear and
how they look. In the concept of appearance, most people use their appearance as a tool to express
their own individualized style. With having individualized style, it works hand in hand with using
fashion as a way to identify ones' social standing. As trends come and go, there are dedicated
advocates of certain styles. Those advocates might relate to that style by dressing in various
different outfits that can be jumbled up into a certain category. However, there are a few individuals
that have certain looks that sets them apart from the crowd. For example, in the mid–1960's, British
teenage model, Twiggy, created a marketable style of an androgynous look consisting of large eyes,
long eyelashes, and short hair. That became her trademark and caused an uprising in her career as a
significant pioneer in the fashion industry. Her appearance created a whole new way of using a

Dreams are imaginary until it's up to you to make it happen, which is what Tracy did by
continuously being persistent to get what she wanted.
Fashion and politics are displayed in this film, which is still prevalent today. The term "white
famous" describes the dialogue of the film because "it's ostensibly that moment for people of color
working in music, television, film or comedy or whichever culture space when one's star power
penetrates the mainstream" ("Carter"). When you are acknowledged by another race you feel
compelled to allow others to use you as a trophy display to collect a profit if there is no guidance
around you. During the film Tracy and Brian had a conversation and he referred to her as "I think he
needs another nigger". The intensity of both character's shows one demands success, but the other
demands equality for black people. Brian hints to Tracy that sticking to her own kind of people will
be more beneficial to her because she comes from a different world than the rest.
Although this may be true, I can understand why she had a hard time accepting it, because black
people have been oppressed their entire lives and during that time a lot of black women weren't
getting opportunities like her, which made her take advantage of that. It relates to politics because
her designs were criticized by several people in the industry, which was controversial being a

of anorexia, I know the emotional and physical damage this disease can cause. The root cause of

As the fad of eating disorders continued, more people gained in support. Pro–eating disorder (pro–
ED) emerged on the internet, saying that eating disorders are actually a lifestyle choice instead of a
medical condition. Pro–anorexia (pro–ana) and pro–bulimia (pro–mia) Web sites, forums, clubs and
chat groups were created to offer "thinspiration" in the form of dieting tips and images of severely
thin models (Topping). People today are still suffering from anorexia and bulimia, afraid that if they
gain any weight America will consider them to be obese. America's obsession with the obesity
epidemic scares many woman and girls in the U.S. into the belief that their body will never be good
enough. Recently American leaders have been pressing the issue of obesity to children and adults
across the country. First Lady Michelle Obama newly started "Let's Move!" a program hoped to
help youth in America become fit, healthy, and to decrease obesity (DeNoon). Doctors and
psychologists feel that this new aim at being fit does more harm than good. "We live in a very
weight obsessive society where the body size is getting larger, but what is considered the ideal body

According to Thomas, in one year American children see on average 10,000 commercials; ninety–
five percent of those commercials are fast foods, soft drinks, candy, and sugary cereals. From an
early age, they are taught to eat and eat. Alongside that, they are also taught to be prejudiced against
overweight and obese people. Prejudice is learned at an early age and develops throughout
childhood. Why is there such an industrialized food industry alongside an obsession with thinness
and a fear of fat? Advertising to children and adults for fatty foods and diets are normal. Young girls
and women are persecuted for going on diets and being overweight much more than men (Seid,
172). Girls as young as four are on diets, especially the ones in activities such as dance and
modeling. Parents, knowingly or not, teach their children their beliefs, by telling them or through
example. Most parents teach that discrimination against anyone is wrong, yet still hold
discriminatory beliefs themselves and show it in their actions. A study in London on children and
prejudice has shown this fact. Twenty–four children between the ages of five and eight were shown
four photos, each of a different child with a disability or issue. One was in a wheelchair, one had lost
their hair due to cancer treatment, one was a child from a nation they had no contact with, and the

Media is thought to be a risk factor for developing anorexia. The messages and images in the media

Comparing Whispering To Witches And So Hard To Say

Whispering to Witches and So Hard to Say
____________________________________________________
Introduction
During the marking period, I have read two books. One is called Whispering to Witches, by Anna
Dale, and the other one is So Hard to Say, by Alex Sanchez. Some general similarities between the
two books are that the stories are both about the main character discovering something new about
either the world or himself, and they both have a teenage male protagonist. However, the most
obvious similarity between the two books is definitely the latter, which is the main comparison
point. Even though there are some similarities between the books, they are still fairly different. Now
let's dig into each story and see which one is better.
Whispering to Witches – Anna Dale
This is a fantasy novel about a young teenage boy called Joe who discovers that witches actually
exist. He gets woven into the world of witchcraft and becomes close friends with a witch called
Twiggy. He eventually helps Twiggy defeat the evil witch Logan Dritch and the ambitious mortal
Lydia, who attempts to exterminate the witch population. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For example, Joe explains what Logan Dritch has done to the enchanted rat by saying, "Then Logan
Dritch grabbed her by the tail and threw her out of the attic window" (Dale 278). This clearly shows
physical conflict and action within the book, and this is just one of the many action scenes in the
novel. These action elements within the novel attract the reader's attention, because people tend to
get more excited over scenes like fighting than scenes like sitting down and reading a book. These
elements keep the audience

Body Dysmorphi Beauty And The Aspects Of Beauty

  • 1. Body Dysmorphi Beauty And The Aspects Of Beauty Growing up we have been told that "It's the inside that counts because beauty is only skin deep." And yet the media contradicts this idea every day. If looks don't make a difference, or even matter, why are such a significant number of women hurting themselves since they're troubled with the way they look? Why air brush away our flaws? This is on the grounds that our general public has developed a specific self–perception that being sexy or beautiful is no longer about being yourself, it's in fact a long way from the normal average women size twelve. The ridiculous standard of perfect that women are brainwashed with, has caused many to developed "Body Dysmorphia." No women, child, or young lady should feel the need to look in a mirror for hours trying to fix something they feel should not be there whether it be a freckle they don't like or how much tighter their clothes are compared to others. No person should turn to cosmetic procedures, dieting, changing the way the dress, or even their hair just because they want to look like the person on the cover of a magazine. The absurd so called ideal body measures shouldn't exist. The idea that being perfect or sexy means that your thighs can't touch, your hair has to be long, have to be a size double zero, and your waist can't be as wide as your hips shouldn't exist. The media needs to develop realistic self–perception alongside the possibility that ladies of every ethnicity, shape, and size are excellent, not simply ladies who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Negative Effects Of Social Media On Body Image "Experts believe that today, more than ten million women and girls suffer from anorexia, bulimia, or related illnesses, with the onset of such problems occurring in patients of younger and younger ages." (Ballaro, 2017, p.) When I was 13 years of age, I started to have a very negative self image. I hated what I looked like, and this eventually lead me to having an eating disorder. I would go online and do research on different diets and how to get a thigh gap and how to lose a large amount of weight in the shortest amount of time. I would also go on social media and find pictures of underweight girls as 'motivation' to help me stay focused on losing too much weight. We are greatly influenced by the unrealistic expectations of how we should look from social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. Even though other factors may play a part in having a low body image, social media negatively affects body image because what is popular on social media, such as pictures of thin models, can be harmful to a person's body satisfaction. Initially, when people start a social media account, it is usually not about the amount of followers they have or how many likes they can get. It is about keeping in touch with the people they cannot usually interact with on a consistent basis. It is about making sure they do not miss out on anything in the other person's life and not letting others miss out on things happening in your life. People commonly do this by uploading ... • 3. The Pundits Aversion Of Hollywood Movies In the mid twentieth century, ladies venerated motion picture symbols, for example, Marilyn Monroe and Camille Clifford. Around 1900s, Camille Clifford began the pattern where the models of excellence were set around 140 pounds, at 5'4" feet tall. In those days, the perfect female body is by having a littler mid–area (e.g. hourglass perfect/bodices). Marilyn Monroe's modest waist and apparently huge bust line activated female fans to begin to connect with additional on physical exercises. The upheaval on slim looking depiction of self–perception started in mid 1960s (e.g. Design symbol, Twiggy). Most western social orders experience huge weights on people to acclimate and accomplish the dainty perfect. Pundits' aversion of Hollywood movies' is because of the straight–line plots of the movies in which nothing is left misty, unsettling or unexplained and each shot is supported by a connection to strictest circumstances and end results. Numerous late movies bolster this generalization of American society. Enhancements, viciousness, and performers' names (in spite of level of ability) are frequently real topics that convey Americans to the films. Lastly, Jeyn also encourages virtue through cowardice actions in a character. In Dark Inside, Jeyn Roberts inspires the reader to be virtuous. Mason turned back to face Twiggy. 'Yeah? The coffee mug sailed through the air, smashing into the side of Mason's face. "Trust no one.' Twiggy said" (Roberts 138, 139). This demonstrates that Roberts teaches to be virtue. The evidence proves Twiggy's insincere actions because it shows that Twiggy was not being genuine or real with Mason. The National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA), asserts an upsurge in eating disorders, inadequate self–esteem, and depression cases are attributed to this illustration (Chittom, N. Page). The portrait of American beauty has transformed greatly over the years (Chittom, N. Page). At the dawn of the twentieth century, beauty centered around abundant chests and minuscule waists, accentuated with tight corsets, but in the 1920's, this image changed to glorify flat chested "flappers" (Chittom, N. From one decade to another the trends and styles of clothes alternated drastically. The 1950's started with long, flowy dresses. 1960's moved to more playful, knee–length dresses. 1970's was tight fitting clothes and platform shoes. 1980's was all about bright colors. 1990's included thrift shop clothes and more of a hip–hop style. This fashion trend was known as the 'unexpected'. Mary Quant's fashion moved away from the 'tacky' look and became more playful and a youth style. This included short and patterned dresses that made a statement. This new fashion trend was also accompanied by a famous woman named Twiggy. Both Mary Quant and Twiggy worked together, they were also seen together in dresses and skirts that hit at around six or seven inches above the knees. Very scandalous for the time, the mini quickly made its way onto magazine covers and in almost every advertising campaign of the decade. "The Chelsea Look" was made popular by Mary Quant, the designer, but it was modeled by Twiggy, the icon. 1970's When the 1970's first hit polyester was a popular material and so was bright colored clothes. In this essay, I will talk about Mary Quant (Early 60s) in London and Yves Saint Laurent (mid to late 60s) in France. I will compare them and their backgrounds to show how they became iconic in the history of fashion through events that took place in the 60s. At the time of Mary Quant, the youth culture in London was demanding to be distinguished separately as a sub–culture. Mass Media 's Influence On Society Over the years mass media has become more available and favored by society through avenues such as magazines, television, newspapers, print ads, internet, and including social media. According to U.S. Census Bureau (2007), individuals spend nearly a total of 3,518 hours of their time on mass media outlets. Mass media has become widely popular among individuals, in particularly young adults.73% of U.S adults aged 18–29, have been reported regularly visit at least one of these outlet, and 42% use more than one (Duggan & Smith, 2013). Mass media has been an outlet for individuals in society to send and receive information. It has given individuals the ability to communicate and share news amongst each other. Henceforth, mass media outlets such as social media have allowed individuals within society the ability to interact with one another. In America, as people interest in media has grown so has individuals interest in their body image (Cash, 2004).Body image is extensively publicized in mass media (Cash, 2004). The play also touches on the subject of Australia's attitude towards mental health at that time when we see that there is little sympathy for the suffering that Coral is going through after the loss of her son in the Vietnam War. Her husband, Roy, actually shows that he is embarrassed by her depression and really does not support her he even threatens to "arrange shock treatment" for her. Essay on How the Ideal Body Image Has Changed Through History How the ideal body has changed over time and what the future holds This painting was created in 1509 and a section from the plaque below the painting reads "This mysterious painting is meant to be an allegory of Poetry, whose symbols – the flute and the pouring water – are shared between two nude women of ideal beauty. These unreal figures exist only in the imaginations of the two men they inspire." This painting shows that just over 500 years ago the ideal body was one of robust and physically larger women. This painting was created in 1863, just over 350 years after the painting above. This shows that in over 350 years the ideal body did not change as this painting still depicts women whom people today may classify as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This showed that the idea of changing a woman's figure had started in the early 1800's but for quite a long time these two 'ideals' ran alongside each other. Some women were starting to alter their physical appearance whereas many other women had bodies that were similar to the 'ideal' larger body which has been commonplace since the 1500's. In the 1920's, after World War 1, active lifestyles were dominant and body fat became associated with being self–indulgent. Adding to this, women were starting to gain more independence and so to reflect this women desired a freedom of movement and comfort in the clothes they wore. Anne Bolin, an anthropologist at Elon College in North Carolina explains that, "during... the 1920's... the ideal shape for women de–emphasised their reproductive characteristics such as nourishing breasts and wide, childbearing hips". Due to the emergence of the flappers, dresses skimmed over the hips, rather than accentuating the waist and some women bound their breasts to create a more androgynous silhouette. This was the first time that women embraced something other than the traditional womanly figure seen previously. With the flappers it was generally the first time that women made a conscious decision to try obtain a thin body, something that changed the ideal body for many generations to come. Although the idea to embrace thinness occurred in the 1920's for a short while afterwards in the 1930's and 1940's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Beauty : The Definition Of Beauty And Beauty Standards Beauty Standards Beauty standards have been a major issue for many years now and women have been willing to change their bodies over and over to please themselves and others. Beauty standards are often defined in terms of hairstyles, skin color, and body size. The measures involved in having to live up to these standards are often risky in nature. For decades, what is seen as beautiful is centered around a women's weight and size. Today, that standard is often defined as being thin. Women often resort to drastic means to attain that ideal image. However, achieving these standards can be expensive, can lower self–esteem and can be a threat to a woman's health and life. There are many beauty standards but weight and body size is slowly becoming the main focus. These standards give a false sense of hope of having the "perfect body." Instead of letting beauty standards be socially accepted, people should be aware of the harm they cause. Celebrities are role models to various people around the world and they are criticized for their appearance. Many of these celebrities go out and get plastic surgery, Botox injections, and Silicone implants. People that a lot of money and higher status are more likely to be able to live up to these standards. Some women are willing to sacrifice comfort and tolerate the pain to achieve them. • 13. Societal Pressure to be Thin "To be happy and successful, you must be thin," is a message women are given at a very young age (Society and Eating Disorders). In fact, eating disorders are still continuously growing because of the value society places on being thin. There are many influences in society that pressures females to strive for the "ideal" figure. According to Sheldon's research on, "Pressure to be Perfect: Influences on College Students' Body Esteem," the ideal figure of an average female portrayed in the media is 5'11" and 120 pounds. In reality, the average American woman weighs 140 pounds at 5'4". The societal pressures come from television shows, diet commercials, social media, peers, magazines and models. However, most females do not take into account of the beauty photo–shop and airbrushing. This ongoing issue is to always be a concern because of the increase in eating disorders. A female should not feel insecure with her body when she is comfortable in her own skin, whether or not she weights 130 pounds or 150 pounds at 5'5". According to Rehab's study of the evolution of the female figure over one hundred years, "the body shapes of the most admired models have remained consistently slimmer than that of the average American woman." Due to the significant increase in mass media throughout the twentieth century of the United States, there has been a noteworthy impact on the popular image of women. • 15. Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? By Joyce Carol... Social Landscape Change The short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates was published in 1966, which in turn happened to be one of the most complicated decades in history. A time of misdirected hatred, recreational substance usage, and a cloak of death surrounding the world. As a result, the social norms of the time period are expressed in Oates short story through language, imagery, and allusions. Oates begins her story much like any other author showing a dysfunctional family, with depictions of dysfunction, rebellion, and mindlessness of those who are most important. Connie, the main character, is shown as the redheaded step child so to speak, she is neglected by her father and receives nothing but negativity from her mother. Now, there is always the argument that Connie is an immature teenager who has not yet had to grow up and face the music of responsibility; however, the lack of defined parental structure in her life hinders her capability to flourish as a young adult. For example, Oates writes "Their father was away at work most of the time and when he came home he wanted supper and he read the newspaper at supper and after supper he went to bed. He didn't bother talking much to them, but around his bent head Connie's mother kept picking at her until Connie wished her mother was dead and she herself was dead and it was all over." (Oates, 468) The excerpt describes the relationship of Connie and her parents to a tee with the description of the ignorance of her father and the personal anguish with her mother. Oates uses language to paint the picture she wants the reader to see and follows through on the image she has manifested. Furthermore, Oates uses descriptive language throughout the short story which further develops the characters and the relationships between Connie and everyone else. For example, when Oates writes about Connie's sister, June, she depicts her as "plain" and "chunky" neither of which sound appealing; however, when Connie is described she is clearly labeled "pretty and that was everything". With the usage of descriptive language, Oates is also creating the cookie cutter rival image. From the beginning, Oates has given one sister and advantage that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The greatest influences to fashion in the 1960's are analyzed in this paper. Each chapter goes into depth on each influence and how it all relates back to fashion. Fashion is one way of self– portrayal and it can define a time period and a person. The important part is to look into the behind the scenes aspect of fashion and the cultural and social integration into the fashion industry. By looking deeper into the subject I have concluded that fashion is influenced by the happenings of a certain time period. Each time period has its own definitive style which is brought out through fashion. It can be concluded that social and cultural influences are the driving force behind fashion and how it is portrayed in each decade. The 19 amendment that was ratified on August 1920 gave the right of women to vote and the impact of World War I resulted in women questioning traditional morals and values, becoming rebellious. When men left for the war it caused women to have new jobs such as working in factories. Also, "the number of women attending college rose to 10% of the population by the end of the 1920's." Due to women having the opportunity to have jobs and go to college women became more mobile. The corset limited women to be mobile in this era which caused the production of coresets to quickly decline. Less women wearing corset made their figure to be more boyish and straight. The women of this era was called the Flappers, free spirited women, representing the new change of how women looked. The Flappers "lacked hips, breasts, and a defined waist". They would dress in dresses above their knee and ankle showing more legs and having bare arms. They would also stray away from having long hair and cut their hair into a bob to symbolize freedom and independency. As a reason of women questioning traditional values they began to drink, smoke and be more sexual in this era. • 30. The Symbolism Of A High End Luxury Brand The typical impression someone leaves are often the first impression. Judgement based on appearance is not a new concept. Scientifically proven, it takes a set amount of three seconds to determine the type of impression the subject leaves. In those three seconds, appearance can be based on physical looks and/or materialistic items. The symbolism of a high end luxury brand can imply the social standing of a certain individual as well as their physical appearance. It is an invitation for society to judge ones' appearance and attitude, solely based upon what type of brand they wear and how they look. In the concept of appearance, most people use their appearance as a tool to express their own individualized style. With having individualized style, it works hand in hand with using fashion as a way to identify ones' social standing. As trends come and go, there are dedicated advocates of certain styles. Those advocates might relate to that style by dressing in various different outfits that can be jumbled up into a certain category. However, there are a few individuals that have certain looks that sets them apart from the crowd. For example, in the mid–1960's, British teenage model, Twiggy, created a marketable style of an androgynous look consisting of large eyes, long eyelashes, and short hair. That became her trademark and caused an uprising in her career as a significant pioneer in the fashion industry. Her appearance created a whole new way of using a trademark as a way of ... The drama film was about a struggling fashion design student name Tracy from Chicago who found success through modeling in Rome with the help of a fashion photographer. As she became more successful it tarnished her relationship with a social activist name Brian and in the fashion industry. In the film the actress shows that Tracy represents women who come from rough environments that are willing to see bigger dreams for themselves. Tracy is relatable to women then and now because we all have an urge of wanting success and all of the perks that comes with following something you are truly passionate about. Mahogany represents women going through the process of fame and success and not being able to handle the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, it is hard trying to make everyone envision your dreams and how much you believe in them. Dreams are imaginary until it's up to you to make it happen, which is what Tracy did by continuously being persistent to get what she wanted. Fashion and politics are displayed in this film, which is still prevalent today. The term "white famous" describes the dialogue of the film because "it's ostensibly that moment for people of color working in music, television, film or comedy or whichever culture space when one's star power penetrates the mainstream" ("Carter"). When you are acknowledged by another race you feel compelled to allow others to use you as a trophy display to collect a profit if there is no guidance around you. During the film Tracy and Brian had a conversation and he referred to her as "I think he needs another nigger". The intensity of both character's shows one demands success, but the other demands equality for black people. Brian hints to Tracy that sticking to her own kind of people will be more beneficial to her because she comes from a different world than the rest. Although this may be true, I can understand why she had a hard time accepting it, because black people have been oppressed their entire lives and during that time a lot of black women weren't getting opportunities like her, which made her take advantage of that. It relates to politics because her designs were criticized by several people in the industry, which was controversial being a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Anorexia and bulimia are very serious eating disorders. Many women and young girls feel that these disorders are the only way for them to be accepted by others. However the strive for acceptance only ends up causing pain, emotional harm, or death to those affected. Being a sufferer of anorexia, I know the emotional and physical damage this disease can cause. As the fad of eating disorders continued, more people gained in support. Pro–eating disorder (pro– ED) emerged on the internet, saying that eating disorders are actually a lifestyle choice instead of a medical condition. Pro–anorexia (pro–ana) and pro–bulimia (pro–mia) Web sites, forums, clubs and chat groups were created to offer "thinspiration" in the form of dieting tips and images of severely thin models (Topping). People today are still suffering from anorexia and bulimia, afraid that if they gain any weight America will consider them to be obese. America's obsession with the obesity epidemic scares many woman and girls in the U.S. into the belief that their body will never be good enough. Recently American leaders have been pressing the issue of obesity to children and adults across the country. First Lady Michelle Obama newly started "Let's Move!" a program hoped to help youth in America become fit, healthy, and to decrease obesity (DeNoon). Doctors and psychologists feel that this new aim at being fit does more harm than good. "We live in a very weight obsessive society where the body size is getting larger, but what is considered the ideal body type (weight) isn't." (Fields, ScD). Fields, a psychologist at a local Washington hospital says that the "Let's Move!" plan is a great start to stopping the spread of obesity, but it falls short in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Fat Documentary Analysis In the documentary "Fat," written, produced, and directed by Antony Thomas, the controversy of obesity is looked at in–depth. Global food issues, advertising, and experiments are looked at as doctors are interviewed about their view of the crisis. The film begins with a study done on the Pima tribe, separated in ancestry between Arizona and Mexico, and the weight issues of the American side compared to the ideally fit Mexican side. The media is largely blamed because of the extreme amount of advertising done, especially to children. According to Thomas, in one year American children see on average 10,000 commercials; ninety– five percent of those commercials are fast foods, soft drinks, candy, and sugary cereals. From an early age, they are taught to eat and eat. Alongside that, they are also taught to be prejudiced against overweight and obese people. Prejudice is learned at an early age and develops throughout childhood. Why is there such an industrialized food industry alongside an obsession with thinness and a fear of fat? Advertising to children and adults for fatty foods and diets are normal. Young girls and women are persecuted for going on diets and being overweight much more than men (Seid, 172). Girls as young as four are on diets, especially the ones in activities such as dance and modeling. Parents, knowingly or not, teach their children their beliefs, by telling them or through example. Most parents teach that discrimination against anyone is wrong, yet still hold discriminatory beliefs themselves and show it in their actions. A study in London on children and prejudice has shown this fact. Twenty–four children between the ages of five and eight were shown four photos, each of a different child with a disability or issue. One was in a wheelchair, one had lost their hair due to cancer treatment, one was a child from a nation they had no contact with, and the last was an obese child. They ... • 39. Comparing Whispering To Witches And So Hard To Say Book Wars Whispering to Witches and So Hard to Say ____________________________________________________ Introduction During the marking period, I have read two books. One is called Whispering to Witches, by Anna Dale, and the other one is So Hard to Say, by Alex Sanchez. Some general similarities between the two books are that the stories are both about the main character discovering something new about either the world or himself, and they both have a teenage male protagonist. However, the most obvious similarity between the two books is definitely the latter, which is the main comparison point. Even though there are some similarities between the books, they are still fairly different. Now let's dig into each story and see which one is better. Whispering to Witches – Anna Dale This is a fantasy novel about a young teenage boy called Joe who discovers that witches actually exist. He gets woven into the world of witchcraft and becomes close friends with a witch called Twiggy. He eventually helps Twiggy defeat the evil witch Logan Dritch and the ambitious mortal Lydia, who attempts to exterminate the witch population. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These action elements within the novel attract the reader's attention, because people tend to get more excited over scenes like fighting than scenes like sitting down and reading a book.
