What Is The Nature Of Evil In Beowulf
Beowulf someone who was loved by all was the ruler of Spear Danes. His heir was Halfdane who
had wisdom, sturdiness and guided and protected the people. Halfdane had four children. Three sons
named Heorogar, Hrothgar, and Halga along with one daughter who became a queen. Hrothgar was
a great, powerful warrior that men would be honored to fight beside. His followers began to grow
until he had very many. So many people joined his army that he decided to build the largest hall
ever known to man. He named the hall Heorot. Hrothgar soon kept his promise to shower his army
in gifts and treasures. Outside of his hall awaited death and destruction though. A presence of evil
waited outside that hated hearing everyone so happy. The demon outside was

Guided Inquiry : The Nature Of Evil
Guided Inquiry: The Nature of Evil
My Inquiry:
"To what extent is Adolf Eichmann just a bureaucratic businessman doing his job, or were his
motivations composed of pure evil and murderous intent?"
'Is Eichmann a rotten, soiled and evil man, and were his motivations boring, mundane and obvious?'
Why did Eichmann kill so many Jews if he 'supposedly' no real hate or motivation to do it?
Reading 1
"Adolf Eichmann went to the gallows with great dignity. He had asked for a bottle of red wine and
had drunk half of it. He refused the help of the Protestant minister the Reverend William Hull who
offered to read the Bible with him: he had only two more hours to live and therefore no "time to
waste." He walked the fifty yards from his cell to the execution chamber calm and erect with his
hands bound behind him. When the guards tied his ankles and knees he asked them to loosen the
bonds so that he could stand straight. "I don't need that " he said when the black hood was offered
him. He was in complete command of himself nay he was more: he was completely himself.
Nothing could have demonstrated this more convincingly than the grotesque silliness of his last
words. He began by stating emphatically that he was a Gottgläubiger to express in common Nazi
fashion that he was no Christian and did not believe in life after death. He then proceeded: "After a
short while gentlemen we shall all meet again. Such is the fate of all men. Long live Germany long
live Argentina long live Austria. I

Nature And Nature : Evil, Creature Of Nature
The humans do deserve to be a creature of nature(evil, murders of species). When it catches them,
they are killed, it spreads fast, and so we had to keep them safe. Keeping them in a EVACC is just
not right, besides i would let them outside where they're comfortable, creatures kill and as we were
around they kept dying. Before we had real food, humans had to hunt to kill so who knows if
humans ended the mammoths era. Thats a stand point between time and real world. "Nature has
changed course, and more of the agents she employs today would have been sufficient to produce
her former works", "a world previous to ours", "sure, he made errors", and last would be
"Unfortunately, we are losing all these amphibians before we even know that they exist."These all
prove my point because they assume things but really don't know what happened so they say or
guess how they extinct, and how close to the same species that died off look or are the same to the
ones today but they have big differences from each other.
First up, nature is what we will be talking about. Now in the book its like a lot of murder, and you
know humans back then only knew how to survive. What more could they know when they seen the
auks, skin them and cut all heir beaks off. The more you look at it, and deep into what they could
have done would be for clothing but their were a lot of resources for clothing. So why kill and do all
this slaughter to those species. Like in the book Kolbert quoted from another saying,

Macbeth-Nature of Evil
Macbeth explores the nature of evil by the gradual change in the environment and the people within
the play. Various factors of individuals, society and politics and supernatural themes contribute to
the nature of evil. Individuals and Supernatural influences cause Macbeth to become king of
Scotland and his reign affects social and political factors.
Macbeth was a Scottish general and Thane of Glamis, a loyal, brave man who turned into a
murderer and traitor in order to become King of Scotland. In Macbeth , dramatic irony is used to
create suspense and tension; it keeps the audience anticipating the reaction of the people and
consequences. It is used in Act 1 Scene 4, "There's no art to find the mind's construction in the face.

Macduff, along with other nobles prepares a rebellion, it shows the extent of political and social
disruption in Scotland due to Macbeth's evil. The technique used is symbolism of having correct
social order restore with the removal of Macbeth. The quote in act 3 scene 6, " we may again give to
our tables meat, sleep to our nights, free from our feasts and banquets bloody knives do faithful
homage and receive free honors all which we pine now." shows a conversation between Lord and
Lennox and it refers to Macduffs' visit to the English king to make a military campaign against
Macbeth so that life returns to normal. Killing the king has a dramatic impact on social order of
society, since without a king there must be a new one, but since Macbeth is evil, society is in a state
of imbalance because he got that position by evil means.
The three witches are pure evil, and their prophecies are the cause of treachery and murder in
Macbeth's mind. The technique of foreshadowing is used to make a reference to an earlier event, so
the audience knows that the prophecies were true. The quote 'All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, thane
of Cawdor!' is from the witches in act 1 scene 3, it is the first prophecy which initiates Macbeth's
dark ambition after it becomes true. The witches' prophecies tempt Macbeth's dark desires for
power; however they do not force or interfere with his evil acts. The witches' ugly, androgynous
appearance, bizarre potions and rhymed speech

The Nature Of Evil In Grendel's '
Grendel is a murderous deviant that was good minded and evil minded. He is very crazy and lives in
a crazy world. How do we even know anything is real? That is an idea used thoroughly throughout
the book. Each chapter in the book is used as a different philosophy or you could even say a lesson
learned. Unfortunately grendel is not a happy creature, he feels useless and doesn't know what to do
with his life, doesnt know why he even has life and that bothers him quite a lot. Also he wants to be
friendly and known as a kind creature but humans are not letting him do so. For example when he
entered the mead hall declaring "mercy, and peace" humans just came at him attacking, in his eyes
he is just doing what he had to do to survive. Although he does kill for no reason on occasion it is
usually animals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With his hatred towards them he will be happy when that day comes. At this point grendel is very
upset with his "role in society" which basically consist of him being the "great destroyer". He does
not want to be this way and he doesn't start the novel as a murderous monster. He definitely had an
attitude. The dragon did not help his ways either especially by giving him the power to be
impervious to human weaponry and tricks. This is later how he gets killed by beowulf by getting
tricked into thinking he was sleeping or already dead. Personally in my eyes all grendel wants is to
be understood by people especially humans, he wants to be

The City Of God: The Nature Of Evil
In The City of God, Augustine writes about the nature of evil and where he believes it to come from
and what the purpose of evil is to the world and humans. He states, "Good thing prevail over bad,
however: so much so that, although evil things are permitted to exist in order to demonstrate how
the justice and perfect foresight of the Creator can make good use even of them, good things can
nonetheless exist without evil..." By this, Augustine is simply saying that without evil in the world,
good will not technically exist because it is just the way things are. Evil shows the light on good and
gives us proof that the creator is good and can beat evil. In the Chronicles of Narnia book The
Magicians Nephew, we get a peek of this very similar ideology ... Show more content on

It starts with a prisoner trapped in a cave unable to see anything but a light from behind and
shadows on the wall. This is a metaphor for the imagination of the uneducated person. From there
the person goes to the stage where they see a new reality and believes that to be true now that they
see beyond the cave shadows. Beyond that they see the real objects that the shadows were meant to
be and when they see the light behind everything, they have reached the highest level of education
and can stay there forever. But if they were to go back inside that cave with the imagination level,
they would surely be killed. In the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, we see the journey of Eustace
Clarence Scrubb through the different levels of education in the land of Narnia. When his character
is introduced he is almost snobby and looks down on the discussion of Narnia by Edmund and Lucy.
Lewis writes, "...he loved teasing them about it. He thought of course that they were making it all
up; and as he was far too stupid to make anything up himself, he did not approve of that." As the
story progresses you see Eustace changing as he experiences the magic of the world of Narnia. In
chapter 6, The adventures of Eustace, we see how him changing into a dragon opens his eyes to his
dragon like behavior not only in the moment but also in the past. In the very last

Human Nature : Good Or Evil
Human Nature: Good or Evil
All ideologies, including some economic ideologies, produce theories of human nature in order to
establish fundamental human rights and to establish a more productive form of government. Human
nature refers to the distinguishing characteristics of humans, including ways of thinking, feeling and
acting; it is the moral principles that construct certain standards of behavior, which every person is
entitled to simply because they are a human being. Many philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle,
Rousseau, and Locke attempted to address the aspect of human nature directly; however each
produced a slightly different definition. Inherently, human nature is neither good nor evil, but
categorized into a neutral state until outside influences such as biological genetics, environmental
influence, or culture persuades them to become evil or good.
One of the fullest and most influential accounts of human nature was provided by Plato. His theory
assumes an ideal to which we can aspire to become greater and which allows us to track our
progress as human beings. According to Plato, the human condition is one of ignorance, this idea is
neatly described in the allegory of the cave. Humans are compared to the prisoners in the cave,
witnessing only shadows, yet believing them to be reality. The only liberation from the cave is to
advance towards the light, dismissing appearances as deception and searching for true knowledge;

The Nature Of Evil In Othello
The Nature of Evil in Othello
William Shakespeare's Othello uses different and unique techniques in his language to express the
nature of evil throughout the play. Verbal twists and the characters most importantly stress the act of
evil. Iago, most of all is portrayed as the "villain" or "protagonist in the play. Shakespeare uses this
character to set the basis of evil. Each plot point is spiraled further into tragedy due to the nature of
Iago and his manipulative language towards the other main characters.
Corruption overcomes the Venetian society as Iago uses his crafty skills of deceit. The plan to have
Othello turn against the ones he loves is the perfect example of evil's nature. The power struggle is

"Divinity of hell! When devils will their blackest sins put on, they do suggest at first with heavenly
shows, as I do now."(II, iii, 348) This is the first quote that it is evident Iago is jealous. He is the
voice of jealousy in its entirety, giving way to the evil deeds that drive the play. There is a counter
argument to the fact whether Iago is truly "evil."
In Richard Grant's, Studies in Shakespeare, describes the dual aspects of the character of Iago,
whose external demeanor is characterized by warm sympathy for his friends and apparent
trustworthiness among his peers, but whose real and inner nature is amoral, heartless, and entirely
self–interested. The fact that Iago was the youngest out of the group of characters, Grants theory on
Iago's evil nature is that he adapted it by consciously adopting it. "Brave, and a good soldier, he was
also of that order of ability which lifts a man speedily above his fellows. His manners and his guise
were of a dashing military sort; and his manner had a corresponding bluntness, tempered, at times,
by tact to a warm–hearted effusiveness, by the very tact which prompted the bluntness." [Grant:
Studies in Shakespeare, Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1886, pp. 258–79] Grants theory can twist
the minds of what Iago has always been thought of to be. The typical villain is taken as something
else in this scenario. Being in the military, in is in Iago's

Examples Of Man By Nature Is Evil And Evil
Man by nature is evil and sinner. If we take a look with our history or past, mankind committed a lot
of evil acts. There were many manifestations that man by nature is evil. For example, the occurrence
of war which slayed numerous innocent individuals, the existence of crime and nefarious activities.
Look around you. Look at every people. Look beyond what our eyes can see. What can we picture
out? Their heart that is full of greed, full of lies and full of the desires to take revenge. That is how
man live. We lived life with full of sins because man is born a sinner. Mankind in this day and age
constantly has wars to keep funding themselves. We rape, we kill each other with guns, and we are
completely selfish. We use human beings as property or the so called "human trafficking", we have
the resources necessary to help everyone in the world, but we choose to follow our own selfish
needs instead. There is confusion and lies everywhere, especially on the television to get another
fellow human being to think the same way and follow along. Mankind treats mankind like cattle or
animals. And I arrived with my belief that in order to survive we would be willing to commit acts of
evil. Mankind also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay about The Nature of Evil
Evil is the violation of a moral code. Evil is the dualistic opposite of good. Evil causes harm. While
scattered dictionaries may offer these clear–cut definitions, in reality a theme so prevalent in all
spheres of life from the dawn of man takes on limitless forms. The word itself has come to
symbolize the dividing line between regular people and callous monsters; demonic criminals who
show no sign of compassion and no adherence to virtue. Ideas concerning evil have been strung
along through the schools of theology, the minds of society, and the theories of philosophy
throughout the history of mankind. The dichotomy between the opposing ideas of good and evil sets
apart a gray area ignored by the black and white view of morality. In this ... Show more content on

Whether in the form of Moral Absolutism or Relativism, the notion of evil has shaped religion in a
uniquely profound way. In Islamic theology, there is no concept of absolute evil. The universal idea
that evil exists with good in a dualistic sense is not accepted. Instead, it is considered vital for
believers to profess that all comes from Allah, and to recognize that anything perceived as "evil" is
merely a human outlook. Christianity derives its concept of evil from the Old and New Testaments,
the biblical canons constituting the Christian Bible. In Christian theology, evil is understood to be an
opposition to God as well as something unbefitting to the good of man. A dichotomous black and
white outlook on good and evil seems to dominate in Christian beliefs in the concepts of Heaven
and Hell; reward and punishment. Judaism professes that evil is the result of forsaking god
(Deuteronomy 28:20). Similar to Islam, Jewish theology stresses that it's followers adhere their
obedience to God's laws as inscriped in the Torah. While Christians personify the idea of evil in
Satan, many sects of Judaism believe that although people may possess free will, the human heart is
inherently evil (Schwarz 43). Mormon theology claims that mortal life is a test of faith, and evil is
that which keeps one from discovering the nature of God. While there is no ultimate evil, God is
depicted as the ultimate good

The Nature of Evil
The nature of evil is a crucial yet difficult to understand concept. The conundrum of how good
people can turn bad is one of the most prominent questions in today's society. However, the word
good is to be used lightly as following John Locke's theory of Tabula Rasa; people aren't born
inherently good or evil thus their morality comes from experience and perception. The privileged
like to think that they are all good people and there is a distinct line that separates them from
everyone else. However it is not nearly so black and white. Almost everyone is neither wholly good
nor evil but rather a product of their circumstance. Who is to say a privileged, successful student

The question was asked, who was checking on these soldiers? No one was. The CIA wanted them to
break the prisoners before interrogation so they intentionally gave them free reign. Power without
oversight is a recipe for abuse. The abuses finally ended when they were exposed to the public by a
brave soldier who transcended the bystander effect. Private Joe Darby saw the photos and knew he
had to take action. After going public he received many death threats and is still in hiding with his
family today. Despite this he has expressed that he feels no regrets for what he did. The US
Government was quick to say oh no it's not the system that is broken; it's just the few bad apples.
Now I don't know if I believe that. By all accounts when the soldiers went underground they were
no different from you or I. But when they left they were condemned as monsters. I don't seek to
defend their actions but perhaps their circumstance drove them to their crimes. It's hard to
conceptualize yourself as being one of those soldiers, but, it is possible or even likely that in those
circumstances some of us would have reacted in the same way. But regardless in the end in was the
mere private who was able to overcome the bystander effect and put an end to the injustices that
took place in the dark underground of Abu Ghraib. I have a theory, that you should live your life as
the hero of your own story. If you can break the chains of the bystander effect and take decisive

"He is not easy to describe. There is something wrong with his appearance, something downright

the word blackness seems to imply evil. Mr Hyde is described like an animal: "And the next

Nature Of Good And Evil In Othello
Othello is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. Othello is all about love, rage, jealousy, and
deceiving. Iago in this play is a master manipulator who appears to be friend with everyone but the
reality is that he is playing with each character's emotion for his personal rage. There are three
characters in first three–act Roderigo, Cassio and Othello whom Iago appears to befriend, honest
and advisor but these characters are not aware of Iago's real intention of destroying them. Iago
appears to be friend with Roderigo but in reality, he is using Roderigo as the pawn for his plan
against Othello and Cassio. Iago appears to be advisor and friend to Cassio but in reality, Iago wants
Cassio's position of Lieutenant. Iago appear as e well–wisher and honest to Othello but in reality, he
is Othello's biggest enemy as he thinks Othello has done injustice to him and also he think Othello
might have affair with his wife, Emilia. Each of this character is taken into account and discussed in
this essay.
The character whom Iago always uses as a pawn is Roderigo. Roderigo is Venetian who loves

Nature Of Evil Research Paper
The argument from evil is the problem of reconciling the existence of an omniscient, omnipotent,
and perfectly good God. It states that if there was a God with those qualities, then he would know
about evil, have the power to stop evil, and because he is good, he would stop evil.
If God exists, then he is omniscient, omnipotent, and perfectly good.
If God were omniscient, omnipotent, and perfectly good, then the world would not contain evil.
The world contains evil.
Therefore, it is not the case that God exists.
In this paper, I would like to explore several responses to this argument, the nature of evil, and to
explain why some evils might be a necessity.
There are two types of evil mentioned, moral evil and natural evil. Moral evil is defined as actions
of a person or group, such as theft, murder, manipulation, etc. Natural evil is defined as actions,
which are uncontrollable and caused by nature, such as diseases, earthquakes, and hurricanes.
Further clarification must be made to define an evil act. For example, if someone were becoming
intimate with many people, they could receive a disease. If they were to unknowingly pass the
disease along, the human would be committing the action. If they did not know they were
committing an evil, does it still count as an evil? I think it is crucial to maintain ... Show more

Is evil real to us like physical objects are, or is evil perceived in the mind? Or perhaps some of both?
There are physiological effects when one has a mental experience. For example, if one is feeling
afraid, the sympathetic nervous system stimulates the flight–or–fight response: pupils are dilated,
sweat glands are activated, and hormones are released. Low self esteem could be considered an evil
perceived in the mind; even if nothing is wrong with the person physically, they could still feel
sorrow about the way they look. An injury to the body could be considered more of a real

Dual Nature Of Evil In Frankenstein
Appearing in the English language between the 12th and 14th centuries, the word "monster" derives
from monstrum, a Latin word for an aberration that denotes something wrong with the natural order.
Although mentioning the word "monster" usually evokes gruesome images of unhuman creatures
that behave both primitively and aggressively, in reality, the word incorporates so much more,
revealing deep truths about the way humans see themselves and others. In Mary Shelley's
Frankenstein, this contrast between two perceptions of monsters is evident – on the surface, while
the story appears to be simply a conflict between Victor Frankenstein, a man, and his monster, when
analyzed closely, there are striking parallels between the two characters. Although ... Show more

Despite being an innocent figure who poses no threat to the humans he encounters, the monster is
continually beaten and chased away. Even when developing his own morals and helping the De
Lacey family out of good intentions, he can only talk to the elder De Lacey, who is blind and
therefore unable to see the monster, before he is chased away by Felix. Frankenstein instills in
humans what Isaac Asimov in his novels later calls a Frankenstein complex – a fear of beings that
closely resemble humans. From the monster's appearance, humans assume that the monster is an
irregularity, suggesting an irrational fear of the unknown that all humans possess. But in reality, the
monster is one with nature – for example, he observes that the moon rising "gave me a sensation of
pleasure" (88) and tries to imitate the "pleasant songs of the birds" (88). Aside from living in nature
and using natural resources, the monster seeks perhaps the most natural goal – to have a mate. Thus,
from a Romantic perspective, the monster is actually not a monster at heart, and it is the humans
who are monsters for shunning him from society. Juxtaposed with Frankenstein's character as he
creates the monster – reclusive, dogged, and amoral, and again it is Frankenstein who inspires a
greater sense of unease with the reader. But

What Is The Nature Of Evil In The Crucible
In Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Catcher in the Rye, he subtly addresses humans sinful nature.
Hawthorne speaks of a woman who had an affair and became pregnant her child, Pearl, is described
as dark and demonic by the Puritans. However, Nathaniel argues that Pearl was innocent and free
from all evil. Although the Puritans assume that as a result of Pearl's mother's sin, Pearl will also be
sinful, Hawthorne develops the idea that Pearl was innocent.
The Puritan population believed that Pearl was evil and a product of her mother's sin. Nathaniel
Hawthorne writes about Pearl when described by her mother, "It was as if an evil spirit possess the
child and had them put forth in mockery" (48). Hester looked into the eyes of her daughter and sees
her own darkness and sin in Pearl. Pearl is described as "an imp of evil, emblem and product of sin"
(86). Pearl is given the characteristics of Hester to taunt Hester of her sins. Although to outsiders

Augustine Nature Of Evil Essay
Augustine then mentions all creatures, especially human beings. Augustine affirms that God creates
all creatures. He then distinguishes the existence of two kinds of beings: absolute beings and
accidental beings. God is absolute being and God is existence. In contrast, human beings share the
existence from God (7.XI.17). In addition, all human beings are the creatures, which are created by
God. Human beings could not exist if God does not create them. God is like a luminous body,
human beings are a bit of that body (4.XVI.31). Augustine considers human beings to be the highest
on the ladder of all creatures as he states in his exegesis of chapter 1 in the book of Genesis. Human
beings are absolutely different and unique from all others creatures ... Show more content on

God does not create evil, but man makes him be bad in nature, which God creates and put it in the
order (2.VIII). Augustine gives an argument about evil. This argument is presented as follows: God
creates all things are good. It means that as long as all things exist, they are good. If evil exists, it
means it is good. Therefore, it is contradictory. It can be concluded that evil is not a substance; it is a
perversity of will be twisted away from the highest substance – God (7.XVI.22). Therefore, by
means of evil, we live far away from God, happiness brings us near to God. For Augustine, the
definition of happiness becomes easy because happiness only finds in the returning and living
closely with God. Everyone is able to know this truth, but man will meet challenges in his return to
God. God always presents to man, but man is free to be with God or rejects him. Augustine
concludes that happiness is God, whoever does not know God is unhappy (5.IV.7). To identify the
subject covered in a book, one often thinks that subject will be exactly themes in the books. In the
Confession of Saint Augustine, one can easily identify some themes as above mentioned. Clearly,
this book has at least three themes: God, creatures (man and others), and morality. The problem is
that how can one discover the main subject of this

Beauty, sin, nature, revenge, forgiveness, mercy, turmoil, all of this and more, shoveled together in
one book. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, features twisting turns of events and troubled
characters, all which make the novel a classic. The book's characters seem to fall into certain
archetypes, such as the hero, the devil incarnate, and the friendly beast, etcetera. It is believed that
Roger Chillingworth, the long, lost husband of Hester Prynne and the center of inner turmoil for
many characters, is the antagonist. However, Chillingworth, due to the readers' judgements of his
actions rather the reasoning behind them, is misperceived and is in need of a reevaluation. Those
who support Chillingworth's place as an antagonist are within reason. Throughout the novel,
Chillingworth is described as the "[evidence of man transforming himself into the ... Show more

Chillingworth describes this lack of free agency as a something that would "never set him free again
until he had done [it's] bidding" (133). The relation of this statement to the argument is that
Chillingworth felt as if he was forced to carry out these misdeeds, illustrating his innocence.
Another reason supporting Chillingworth's lack of villainous placement, would be the actual death
of Chillingworth, due to his inability to complete his forced vengeance. In the conclusion, the
narrator states that Chillingworth died because he lived only for the "pursuit and systematic exercise
of revenge" (270). Through this, the author dictates that Chillingworth's only purpose in life, and in
the book for that matter, was his 'villainous' revenge. Chillingworth should not be described as the
villain of the story, because he was forced to choose between being villainous and seeking revenge
or to die a meaningless

The Nature Of Evil In Macbeth
How many people can be thought of that have gone through extreme challenges to get what they
want? Their ambition to want something can often cloud their judgment. Yet it is all a part of
humans achieving their state of nature. In the beginning of the play Macbeth by William
Shakespeare the main character Macbeth had no intensions of being evil yet when more power was
given to him he was influenced into doing bad and wanting all the power by forcing fate. The play
Macbeth, explores human nature, in particular the ambition of the main character Macbeth. Macbeth
makes every decision based upon ambitions to become king. He was so focused on his ambition that
he loses his judgement and his way to look at things in a more clear perspective. Not until the

Human Nature And Evil Nature
The guards, although placed in a simulated environment, allowed their evil nature to triumph and, as
a result, abused the civil rights of others. Throughout history, literature has portrayed this
transgression of human nature and revealed evil's presence, goals, motives, and strategies. His
cunning tactics cause Eve to disobey and betray God, resulting in both her and Adam's banishment
from Heaven. Satan's transformation has not only elucidated the contrast between good and evil but
also created an irreversible suffering for his victims. Humans are now vulnerable to the seven
deadly sins, and will inevitably continue to suffer the consequences.
His plan progresses through a variety of steps including repression, oppression, and destruction.
Satan will take advantage of Man's vulnerability and possess every aspect of his spirit and actions.
Once Satan has seduced Man, so "that this God/May prove thir foe, and with repenting
hand/Abolish his own works," he will finally satisfy his thirst for revenge (Milton II. 270–273).
Because Satan will seduce Man and corrupt him with sin and evil, God will become his own
creation's enemy and abolish them immediately. Satan's sadistic strategy begins by corrupting Adam
and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Satan takes the form of a serpent and persuades Eve to eat the apple
and give in to temptation, causing Adam and Eve's expulsion from Eden. Both Adam and Eve have
irreversibly released sin and evil into God's worldly creation, which is only

Essay on Evil and Human Nature
Alan Moore's V for Vendetta, William Shakespeare's Richard III, and John Garder's Grendel
_______ The topic of evil and from where it originates is one that cannot be proven through factual
evidence, and so rather is a notion that exists only in the thoughts of each individual, allowing him
or her to possess unique beliefs that affect the way he or she lives. What is considered evil depends
upon each individual's view of morality, which constantly changes through the course of that
person's life. Roy Perrett's "Evil and Human Nature" explains this by elaborating on the customary
interpretation of moral evil. This evil, caused by an intentional bad action or harm, opposes another
type of evil, natural evil, which occurs without ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to better understand where evil comes from, it is necessary to examine whether or not
human fault is present in a person at birth. In "Explaining Evil," Mark Bernstein boldly states,
"There is evil in the world... [and] instances of undeserved pain and suffering provide us with our
most poignant examples" (151). These undeserved sufferings include natural disasters, child
deformities, or even simply an animal getting hit by a car. However, while Bernstein and others may
argue that child sickness and deformities are a result of some kind of evil power, the claim can also
be made that these afflictions rather are the cause of evilness. In Richard III, Richard affirms,
Why, I, in this weak piping time of peace, Have no delight to pass away the time, Unless to see my
shadow in the sun And descant on mine own deformity.
And therefore, since I cannot prove a lover
To entertain these fair well–spoken days,
I am determined to prove a villain
And hate idle pleasures of these days. (1.1.11)
Richard notes that his deformity instigated his evil behavior, therefore denying Bernstein's
assumption because it seems as if Richard has only now in this moment decided to become evil,
rather than have been born with an innate evil quality. However, the argument can also still be made
that Richard has both received evil in the form of a deformity and produced evil through his own
actions. When discussing

Nature Of Evil
When we hear the word "evil" we associate it with villainous people throughout history and their
actions, including people such as Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden, and Charles Manson. Evil may
also be associated with the "bad guys" in stories, the ones who want to destroy the world or the main
character but evil isn't just found in extremes as many people think; the nature of evil is that is found
in people around us everyday. The definition of evil according the Oxford dictionary is "profoundly
immoral and wicked" and "harmful or tending to harm." Following that definition, wickedness can
be found in everyone to some degree, we just have to recognize it. Evi s found within the aunt and

Teddy found interest in imagining a separate universe of Kings and Castles through the use of paper
dolls and a doll house. When his uncle found the paper dolls, he found it amusing "an eleven year
old boy!" would play with dolls and doll houses and "he choked trying to restrain his laughter' and
exclaims 'paper dolls and doll houses!" referring to how boys shouldn't be playing with dolls. This
shows teddy's uncle believes the sexes should constrain to their stereotypes "assigned" by society.
He even states "The next thing we know, you'll be wanting us to put skirts on you." The fact that
Teddy's uncle believes Teddy should be confined to the stereotypes of a boy and finds in funny and
humiliating to enjoy things a girl typically would displays a sexist person within. This proves the
evil nature within Teddy's Uncle; an evil that believes it is "silly" and "embarrassing" to enjoy
something that is not "typical" of your gender according to culture. His evil is found in his sexism
and judgment.
Along with demonstrating the thought that it is wrong to enjoy a certain interest based on your sex,
Teddy's uncle reveals a disregard of Teddys imagination and creativity. To him, his nephews interest
in dolls and dollhouses was foolish and comical because those objects are "feminine," but along
with judging his interests, he didn't care to learn of Teddys imagination. Teddy repeats "They ain't

Augustine Nature Of Evil
An omnibenevolent God created a man with the capacity to sin; as Augustine has addressed, the evil
in man resides from his will. Augustine, however, does not address how evil stems also from the
human nature of temptation that was a consequence of the original fall from Eden. Augustine
touches on this theme when accounting for the origins of his sin, but he never fully declares it. "I
loved to excuse my soul," Augustine begins, "and to accuse something else inside me (I knew not
what) but which was not I. But, assuredly, it was I, and it was my impiety that had divided me
against myself" (62). Here, Augustine admits to denying his own human nature to sin, and blames it
on something beyond his will, such as a result of creation. Bonner, ... Show more content on

It can then be deduced that belief to Augustine is not a choice; the choice arises through man's
action. Acts of choosing to believe God are simply a reaffirmation of one's belief, while choosing
the world and not God in one's actions is simply denying God, although one can never fully
disbelieve: the world is a substitute for God, as previously examined. The choice available restricts
free will while allowing men to choose their actions, not their belief. Further, the fall of man, where
human weaknesses stem from, presupposes God's existence, as does Augustine. Consequently,
choices to Augustine reflect our denial or acceptance of the truth that God is real. In this theological
perspective, Augustine supports God's existence completely, and his ascetic choice further upholds
his belief. God's creation further explains Augustine's perspective on belief, Augustine stating that "
[t]he only thing that does not come from [God] is what does not exist," and that combined with "
any movement of the will away from [God who is] and towards that which is in a lesser way" (178).
Denying God, moving away from God, who exists, is a movement defined as both a "crime and sin"
(178). This freedom, again, does not deny God, but is, in spite of his existence, a means to explain
one's belief or doubt. Augustine's Confessions clearly describes this path of sin and denial that
unquestionably leads to a necessary habit of committing it, resulting in Augustine himself becoming
a slave to sin. It is only by God's power, the power than humanity does not possess, that can help
man escape the godless way of life that is living through sin. Belief of God then, is not a choice for
Augustine; it is our free will that allows the choice of living for or against God, and why resisting
temptation and sin and living for God completely is a main idea throughout the Confessions; by
choosing the world, one denies

Why does the poet of Beowulf choose to give human qualities and distinct territories to Beowulf's
monstrous rivals? In the epic, Grendel is a horrible, human–like monster and an outcast in the

her child's death and desires to take revenge, which is similar to the way a human mother feels for
her child. In addition to connecting the traits of the monsters to the humans, the poet also provides
them a territory for their survival. In Beowulf, the poet's purpose of bestowing human attributes and

The poet mentions that Grendel is the descendant "Of Cain, murderous creatures banished/ By God
punished forever . . . Shut away from me; they split / Into thousand forms of evil" (Beowulf 21–26).
This quote is significant because it proves that the monster belongs to the generation of a human
being, Cain. However, the Cain's actions result into the creation of the horrible race of evil
monsters. The poet compares Grendel with humans when the fiend's isolation is related to the Cain's
wrongdoings. Towards the end of the epic, Beowulf's warriors who abandons him at the time of the
battle with the dragon, are also isolated because they conduct a crime by doing so. This shows that
the Anglo–Saxon society considers the action of an individual to decide their worth in the society.
Because Cain murders Abel, and because the warriors leave Beowulf, their descendants
automatically become an outcast in the society. This comparison can be further supported by
Wiglaf's statement to the coward warriors, "none of your race/ Will have anything left but their
lives" (Beowulf 859–860). This quote proves that Grendel is similar to human beings because is evil
actions render him an outcast just like the actions of the coward warriors recluse them from the
society. In conclusion, the poet shows that Grendel and humans have same attributes because evil

Neurobiology of Evil – Nature and Nurture
THE CONTROVERSY:
Ever since Plato and Aristotle, Locke and Descartes, and Charles Darwin, the controversy of nature
and nurture has been ageless, its debate still continuing on today. Likewise, "the forces that produce
those with antisocial behavior are still obscure to researchers; one end of the spectrum viewing the
issue as largely the result of genetic or biological factors, whereas at the other end posit that it is
entirely of social environment" (Hare 165).
There are many that are skeptic with the idea of genetic predisposition of evil – the idea that their
own family with biologically innate risk factors for violence is indeed alarming, especially if
nothing can be done about it. Some also worry that acknowledging such biological disabilities "will
result in a society that takes a soft approach to crime, holding no one accountable for his or her
actions, furthermore using "biology to stigmatize ostensibly innocent individuals" (Raine). It is
growing rather difficult, however, to avoid the mounting evidence. Advanced science can now
utilize modern technology to distinguish brain anatomies of specific individuals that will grow up to
express dangerously antisocial behavior. "With each passing year, society is at the point where the
genetic basis of criminal behavior is well established" (Raine).
But even if neurobiology is found to be the predominant factor in determining antisocial or even
psychopathic behavior in a person,

Human Nature Is Evil
Human nature is evil with motives behind everything, the lacking of care for others, and the taking
advantage of others. A great example of someone who has a motive behind everything, is business
owners. Why do you think Jim McIngvale (Mattress Mack) opened up his mattress store for others
to stay during the storm, it's a genius marketing ploy. When everyone needs to buy a new mattress to
replace the one destroyed or someone who saw what he did for others, they're going to want to buy
for someone who help them and or helped others. It showed that he was a caring man helping out
others during their time of need, so they believe they're giving their money to someone who cares
for others. Thousands of companies all over the world do this daily, they show they doing something
helping the public out, but in reality they had a motive of helping out sales instead of pure intentions
of just doing it because they can.Hobbes "Peace is war in disguise." Another reason why human

The Nature Of Evil In Macbeth
The Nature of Evil
Macbeth, a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, explores the evil nature that is inherent in
people and the consequences when it is allowed to run rampant. This tragedy presents the evil that is
inside every person and tells the story through the eyes of the person who chooses to give in to its
actions. Macbeth presents the inner nature of man as something that can be nurtured and that can
corrupt people's character.
One of the best examples of evil's power to corrupt someone's character and life is Lady Macbeth.
Lady Macbeth was Macbeth's wife. She wanted to bring Macbeth's ambitions and the witches'
prophecies to life. She had to pray to demons in order to let her evil nature grow so that she could
accomplish these goals. After receiving Macbeth's letter about the prophecies, she began to think
that Macbeth's nature was too "good" for him to carry out his ambitions. "Glamis thou art, and
Cawdor; and shalt be what thou art promised. Yet I do fear thy nature; It is too full o'th' milk of
human kindness. To catch the nearest way: thou wouldst be great, Art not without ambition, but
without the illness should attend it"(1.5.13–17). Lady Macbeth was saying that he achieved part of
the prophecies, but he was too full of compassion in order to become king; that he was not willing to
do what is necessary to achieve his ambitions. This means that Lady Macbeth very intentionally let
her evil nature in order to carry out the plans. When she prayed to the demons, she allowed her
inner, destructive nature to take hold and enable her act in ways that she could have with her
previous nature. She also managed to persuade Macbeth into abandoning his morals, thus fulfilling
the second prophecy. This leads to grave consequences that bring about their downfall later in the
plot.
The next example of evil's corruption is Macbeth. Macbeth is the protagonist through which the
nature of evil is most explored. It all started when Lady Macbeth persuaded him to kill Duncan. This
is where the internal struggle of Macbeth's good and evil natures is shown. "...then, as his host, who
should against his murderer shut the door, not bear the knife myself"(1.7.14–16). He is saying that
he was supposed to be king

Are Humans Good or Evil by Nature?
A famous philosopher Socrates once said, "the unexamined life is not worth living." With that idea,
the question "Are Human Beings Intrinsically Evil?" has been asked by philosophers for many
years. It is known as one of the unanswerable questions. Determinists have come to the conclusion
that we are governed by the laws of science, that there is nothing we can do about ourselves being
evil because we naturally are. Evil is simply the act of causing pain. In this essay I will argue that
human beings are born with a natural reaction to "fear and chaos" to be instinctively evil.
The primary evidence that people are generally evil is evident by the number of wars. Most
countries have experienced their share of wars. World War One was the ... Show more content on

In William Golding's novel "Lord of the Flies" which describes horrific exploits of a group of young
boys who make a transition from civilized to barbaric. Golding believes that there is an evil seed
inside all of us and given the right circumstances, human beings are capable of anything. The boys'
evil was described in his novel once they were left in an unsupervised society it became very
chaotic. In a part of his novel, Golding describes the boys' fear of a beast. With that fear, one night a
boy that was away from the group came back and was killed. The boys thought that he was the beast
coming from the bushes. Golding has given us an example that people do not have to learn to be evil
but are born with the natural reaction to become evil once afraid or in a chaos. Another piece of
literature that demonstrates people's evil is Shakespeare's "Macbeth". The story is that witches told
Macbeth that he would become king, with temptation to become king, the fear in becoming king,
and the confusion caused by the witches evil became possible. With the help of his wife, he killed
the people who stood in his was to become king. Literature has shown that it is possible for human
beings in extremely confusing situations and with fear can be become evil.
Philosophers and scientists have also tried to understand why human nature is evil, many believe
that evil in human nature is uncontrollable.

Evil And Evil : The Problem Of Evil In Nature
The problem of evil refers to the question of how to reconcile the existence of evil within a world
governed by an omnipotent God. Flannery O'Connor suggested that through their works of art,
authors should make it their goal to "give the devil his due." This to say that, by acknowledging and
analyzing the qualities of the varying representations of evil in art, there is a movement towards
answering the larger question(s). In bringing these "devils" into existence and in giving them
sentience, authors are effectively providing prospective answers for where and how evil takes shape
in the world. Authors of Modern British literature engaged with this discussion in a wide variety of
techniques. Some suggested that evil was an inherent part of human existence, and that by extension
an inherent part of the individual, while others explored the idea of evil as an independent force or
manifestation capable of answering for why innocent suffer. Both Flannery O'Connor and Oscar
Wilde chose the latter consideration. In The Picture of Dorian Gray and in "The Lame Shall Enter
First" outside influence(s) are held accountable for the misconducts of the given characters. For
instance, Dorian is provoked, and arguably pressured into his sins by Lord Henry Watton who
instills the belief in Dorian that youth is necessary in order to achieve happiness. Similarly, Norton
is influenced by the presence of Rufus who introduces the prospect of good and evil as distinct
modes of living, and as

Rousseau Evil By Nature
First edition of the discourse on the origin and foundations of inequality among men (1755)
From the budget that the structure and the figure of the man have always been the same, Rousseau
looks primitive man as a being dedicated to life wandering and wild. Morally the wild man is
distinguished of the animal by being free and perfectible, allowing you to not blindly follow their
instinct, but determined in the sense that it wants to. In this state the man lives alone, outside the
society; his passions are limited to the satisfaction of the natural desires, sentimental and imaginary
superstructures clean.
Against the thesis sustained by the British philosopher Thomas Hobbes, Rousseau denies that a
similar man is evil by nature; on the contrary,

What Is The Nature Of Evil In Beowulf

  • 1. What Is The Nature Of Evil In Beowulf Beowulf someone who was loved by all was the ruler of Spear Danes. His heir was Halfdane who had wisdom, sturdiness and guided and protected the people. Halfdane had four children. Three sons named Heorogar, Hrothgar, and Halga along with one daughter who became a queen. Hrothgar was a great, powerful warrior that men would be honored to fight beside. His followers began to grow until he had very many. So many people joined his army that he decided to build the largest hall ever known to man. He named the hall Heorot. Hrothgar soon kept his promise to shower his army in gifts and treasures. Outside of his hall awaited death and destruction though. A presence of evil waited outside that hated hearing everyone so happy. The demon outside was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Guided Inquiry : The Nature Of Evil Guided Inquiry: The Nature of Evil My Inquiry: "To what extent is Adolf Eichmann just a bureaucratic businessman doing his job, or were his motivations composed of pure evil and murderous intent?" 'Is Eichmann a rotten, soiled and evil man, and were his motivations boring, mundane and obvious?' Why did Eichmann kill so many Jews if he 'supposedly' no real hate or motivation to do it? Reading 1 "Adolf Eichmann went to the gallows with great dignity. He had asked for a bottle of red wine and had drunk half of it. He refused the help of the Protestant minister the Reverend William Hull who offered to read the Bible with him: he had only two more hours to live and therefore no "time to waste." He walked the fifty yards from his cell to the execution chamber calm and erect with his hands bound behind him. When the guards tied his ankles and knees he asked them to loosen the bonds so that he could stand straight. "I don't need that " he said when the black hood was offered him. He was in complete command of himself nay he was more: he was completely himself. Nothing could have demonstrated this more convincingly than the grotesque silliness of his last words. He began by stating emphatically that he was a Gottgläubiger to express in common Nazi fashion that he was no Christian and did not believe in life after death. He then proceeded: "After a short while gentlemen we shall all meet again. Such is the fate of all men. Long live Germany long live Argentina long live Austria. I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Nature And Nature : Evil, Creature Of Nature The humans do deserve to be a creature of nature(evil, murders of species). When it catches them, they are killed, it spreads fast, and so we had to keep them safe. Keeping them in a EVACC is just not right, besides i would let them outside where they're comfortable, creatures kill and as we were around they kept dying. Before we had real food, humans had to hunt to kill so who knows if humans ended the mammoths era. Thats a stand point between time and real world. "Nature has changed course, and more of the agents she employs today would have been sufficient to produce her former works", "a world previous to ours", "sure, he made errors", and last would be "Unfortunately, we are losing all these amphibians before we even know that they exist."These all prove my point because they assume things but really don't know what happened so they say or guess how they extinct, and how close to the same species that died off look or are the same to the ones today but they have big differences from each other. First up, nature is what we will be talking about. Now in the book its like a lot of murder, and you know humans back then only knew how to survive. What more could they know when they seen the auks, skin them and cut all heir beaks off. The more you look at it, and deep into what they could have done would be for clothing but their were a lot of resources for clothing. So why kill and do all this slaughter to those species. Like in the book Kolbert quoted from another saying, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Macbeth-Nature of Evil Macbeth explores the nature of evil by the gradual change in the environment and the people within the play. Various factors of individuals, society and politics and supernatural themes contribute to the nature of evil. Individuals and Supernatural influences cause Macbeth to become king of Scotland and his reign affects social and political factors. Macbeth was a Scottish general and Thane of Glamis, a loyal, brave man who turned into a murderer and traitor in order to become King of Scotland. In Macbeth , dramatic irony is used to create suspense and tension; it keeps the audience anticipating the reaction of the people and consequences. It is used in Act 1 Scene 4, "There's no art to find the mind's construction in the face. He was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Macduff, along with other nobles prepares a rebellion, it shows the extent of political and social disruption in Scotland due to Macbeth's evil. The technique used is symbolism of having correct social order restore with the removal of Macbeth. The quote in act 3 scene 6, " we may again give to our tables meat, sleep to our nights, free from our feasts and banquets bloody knives do faithful homage and receive free honors all which we pine now." shows a conversation between Lord and Lennox and it refers to Macduffs' visit to the English king to make a military campaign against Macbeth so that life returns to normal. Killing the king has a dramatic impact on social order of society, since without a king there must be a new one, but since Macbeth is evil, society is in a state of imbalance because he got that position by evil means. The three witches are pure evil, and their prophecies are the cause of treachery and murder in Macbeth's mind. The technique of foreshadowing is used to make a reference to an earlier event, so the audience knows that the prophecies were true. The quote 'All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, thane of Cawdor!' is from the witches in act 1 scene 3, it is the first prophecy which initiates Macbeth's dark ambition after it becomes true. The witches' prophecies tempt Macbeth's dark desires for power; however they do not force or interfere with his evil acts. • 5. The Nature Of Evil In Grendel's ' Grendel is a murderous deviant that was good minded and evil minded. He is very crazy and lives in a crazy world. How do we even know anything is real? That is an idea used thoroughly throughout the book. Each chapter in the book is used as a different philosophy or you could even say a lesson learned. Unfortunately grendel is not a happy creature, he feels useless and doesn't know what to do with his life, doesnt know why he even has life and that bothers him quite a lot. Also he wants to be friendly and known as a kind creature but humans are not letting him do so. For example when he entered the mead hall declaring "mercy, and peace" humans just came at him attacking, in his eyes he is just doing what he had to do to survive. Although he does kill for no reason on occasion it is usually animals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With his hatred towards them he will be happy when that day comes. At this point grendel is very upset with his "role in society" which basically consist of him being the "great destroyer". He does not want to be this way and he doesn't start the novel as a murderous monster. He definitely had an attitude. The dragon did not help his ways either especially by giving him the power to be impervious to human weaponry and tricks. This is later how he gets killed by beowulf by getting tricked into thinking he was sleeping or already dead. • 6. The City Of God: The Nature Of Evil In The City of God, Augustine writes about the nature of evil and where he believes it to come from and what the purpose of evil is to the world and humans. He states, "Good thing prevail over bad, however: so much so that, although evil things are permitted to exist in order to demonstrate how the justice and perfect foresight of the Creator can make good use even of them, good things can nonetheless exist without evil..." By this, Augustine is simply saying that without evil in the world, good will not technically exist because it is just the way things are. Evil shows the light on good and gives us proof that the creator is good and can beat evil. In the Chronicles of Narnia book The Magicians Nephew, we get a peek of this very similar ideology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It starts with a prisoner trapped in a cave unable to see anything but a light from behind and shadows on the wall. This is a metaphor for the imagination of the uneducated person. From there the person goes to the stage where they see a new reality and believes that to be true now that they see beyond the cave shadows. Beyond that they see the real objects that the shadows were meant to be and when they see the light behind everything, they have reached the highest level of education and can stay there forever. But if they were to go back inside that cave with the imagination level, they would surely be killed. In the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, we see the journey of Eustace Clarence Scrubb through the different levels of education in the land of Narnia. When his character is introduced he is almost snobby and looks down on the discussion of Narnia by Edmund and Lucy. Lewis writes, "...he loved teasing them about it. He thought of course that they were making it all up; and as he was far too stupid to make anything up himself, he did not approve of that." As the story progresses you see Eustace changing as he experiences the magic of the world of Narnia. In chapter 6, The adventures of Eustace, we see how him changing into a dragon opens his eyes to his dragon like behavior not only in the moment but also in the past. In the very last ... • 7. Human Nature : Good Or Evil Human Nature: Good or Evil All ideologies, including some economic ideologies, produce theories of human nature in order to establish fundamental human rights and to establish a more productive form of government. Human nature refers to the distinguishing characteristics of humans, including ways of thinking, feeling and acting; it is the moral principles that construct certain standards of behavior, which every person is entitled to simply because they are a human being. Many philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Rousseau, and Locke attempted to address the aspect of human nature directly; however each produced a slightly different definition. Inherently, human nature is neither good nor evil, but categorized into a neutral state until outside influences such as biological genetics, environmental influence, or culture persuades them to become evil or good. One of the fullest and most influential accounts of human nature was provided by Plato. His theory assumes an ideal to which we can aspire to become greater and which allows us to track our progress as human beings. According to Plato, the human condition is one of ignorance, this idea is neatly described in the allegory of the cave. Humans are compared to the prisoners in the cave, witnessing only shadows, yet believing them to be reality. The only liberation from the cave is to advance towards the light, dismissing appearances as deception and searching for true knowledge; only when emerging from the cave in clear ... • 8. Nature of Evil in Othello The Nature Of Evil In Othello The Nature of Evil in Othello William Shakespeare's Othello uses different and unique techniques in his language to express the nature of evil throughout the play. Verbal twists and the characters most importantly stress the act of evil. Iago, most of all is portrayed as the "villain" or "protagonist in the play. Shakespeare uses this character to set the basis of evil. Each plot point is spiraled further into tragedy due to the nature of Iago and his manipulative language towards the other main characters. Corruption overcomes the Venetian society as Iago uses his crafty skills of deceit. The plan to have Othello turn against the ones he loves is the perfect example of evil's nature. When devils will their blackest sins put on, they do suggest at first with heavenly shows, as I do now."(II, iii, 348) This is the first quote that it is evident Iago is jealous. He is the voice of jealousy in its entirety, giving way to the evil deeds that drive the play. There is a counter argument to the fact whether Iago is truly "evil." In Richard Grant's, Studies in Shakespeare, describes the dual aspects of the character of Iago, whose external demeanor is characterized by warm sympathy for his friends and apparent trustworthiness among his peers, but whose real and inner nature is amoral, heartless, and entirely self–interested. The fact that Iago was the youngest out of the group of characters, Grants theory on Iago's evil nature is that he adapted it by consciously adopting it. "Brave, and a good soldier, he was also of that order of ability which lifts a man speedily above his fellows. His manners and his guise were of a dashing military sort; and his manner had a corresponding bluntness, tempered, at times, by tact to a warm–hearted effusiveness, by the very tact which prompted the bluntness." [Grant: Studies in Shakespeare, Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1886, pp. 258–79] Grants theory can twist the minds of what Iago has always been thought of to be. There were many manifestations that man by nature is evil. For example, the occurrence of war which slayed numerous innocent individuals, the existence of crime and nefarious activities. Look around you. Look at every people. Look beyond what our eyes can see. What can we picture out? Their heart that is full of greed, full of lies and full of the desires to take revenge. That is how man live. We lived life with full of sins because man is born a sinner. Mankind in this day and age constantly has wars to keep funding themselves. We rape, we kill each other with guns, and we are completely selfish. We use human beings as property or the so called "human trafficking", we have the resources necessary to help everyone in the world, but we choose to follow our own selfish needs instead. • 11. Essay about The Nature of Evil Evil is the violation of a moral code. Evil is the dualistic opposite of good. Evil causes harm. While scattered dictionaries may offer these clear–cut definitions, in reality a theme so prevalent in all spheres of life from the dawn of man takes on limitless forms. The word itself has come to symbolize the dividing line between regular people and callous monsters; demonic criminals who show no sign of compassion and no adherence to virtue. Ideas concerning evil have been strung along through the schools of theology, the minds of society, and the theories of philosophy throughout the history of mankind. The dichotomy between the opposing ideas of good and evil sets apart a gray area ignored by the black and white view of morality. In this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whether in the form of Moral Absolutism or Relativism, the notion of evil has shaped religion in a uniquely profound way. In Islamic theology, there is no concept of absolute evil. The universal idea that evil exists with good in a dualistic sense is not accepted. Instead, it is considered vital for believers to profess that all comes from Allah, and to recognize that anything perceived as "evil" is merely a human outlook. Christianity derives its concept of evil from the Old and New Testaments, the biblical canons constituting the Christian Bible. In Christian theology, evil is understood to be an opposition to God as well as something unbefitting to the good of man. A dichotomous black and white outlook on good and evil seems to dominate in Christian beliefs in the concepts of Heaven and Hell; reward and punishment. Judaism professes that evil is the result of forsaking god (Deuteronomy 28:20). Similar to Islam, Jewish theology stresses that it's followers adhere their obedience to God's laws as inscriped in the Torah. While Christians personify the idea of evil in Satan, many sects of Judaism believe that although people may possess free will, the human heart is inherently evil (Schwarz 43). Mormon theology claims that mortal life is a test of faith, and evil is that which keeps one from discovering the nature of God. The conundrum of how good people can turn bad is one of the most prominent questions in today's society. However, the word good is to be used lightly as following John Locke's theory of Tabula Rasa; people aren't born inherently good or evil thus their morality comes from experience and perception. The privileged like to think that they are all good people and there is a distinct line that separates them from everyone else. However it is not nearly so black and white. After going public he received many death threats and is still in hiding with his family today. Despite this he has expressed that he feels no regrets for what he did. The US Government was quick to say oh no it's not the system that is broken; it's just the few bad apples. Now I don't know if I believe that. By all accounts when the soldiers went underground they were no different from you or I. But when they left they were condemned as monsters. I don't seek to defend their actions but perhaps their circumstance drove them to their crimes. It's hard to conceptualize yourself as being one of those soldiers, but, it is possible or even likely that in those circumstances some of us would have reacted in the same way. But regardless in the end in was the mere private who was able to overcome the bystander effect and put an end to the injustices that took place in the dark underground of Abu Ghraib. He must be deformed somewhere; he gives a strong feeling of deformity, although I couldn't specify the point. He's an extraordinary – looking man, and yet I really can name nothing of the way." This shows that Dr Jekyll doesn't like to hear about evil Mr Hyde, which suggests the two are opposites. A blackness about his eyes is mentioned, the word blackness seems to imply evil. • 15. Nature Of Evil Research Paper The argument from evil is the problem of reconciling the existence of an omniscient, omnipotent, and perfectly good God. It states that if there was a God with those qualities, then he would know about evil, have the power to stop evil, and because he is good, he would stop evil. If God exists, then he is omniscient, omnipotent, and perfectly good. If God were omniscient, omnipotent, and perfectly good, then the world would not contain evil. The world contains evil. Therefore, it is not the case that God exists. In this paper, I would like to explore several responses to this argument, the nature of evil, and to explain why some evils might be a necessity. There are two types of evil mentioned, moral evil and natural evil. Moral evil is defined as actions of a person or group, such as theft, murder, manipulation, etc. Natural evil is defined as actions, which are uncontrollable and caused by nature, such as diseases, earthquakes, and hurricanes. Further clarification must be made to define an evil act. For example, if someone were becoming intimate with many people, they could receive a disease. If they were to unknowingly pass the disease along, the human would be committing the action. If they did not know they were committing an evil, does it still count as an evil? • 16. Dual Nature Of Evil In Frankenstein Appearing in the English language between the 12th and 14th centuries, the word "monster" derives from monstrum, a Latin word for an aberration that denotes something wrong with the natural order. Although mentioning the word "monster" usually evokes gruesome images of unhuman creatures that behave both primitively and aggressively, in reality, the word incorporates so much more, revealing deep truths about the way humans see themselves and others. In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, this contrast between two perceptions of monsters is evident – on the surface, while the story appears to be simply a conflict between Victor Frankenstein, a man, and his monster, when analyzed closely, there are striking parallels between the two characters. Even when developing his own morals and helping the De Lacey family out of good intentions, he can only talk to the elder De Lacey, who is blind and therefore unable to see the monster, before he is chased away by Felix. Frankenstein instills in humans what Isaac Asimov in his novels later calls a Frankenstein complex – a fear of beings that closely resemble humans. From the monster's appearance, humans assume that the monster is an irregularity, suggesting an irrational fear of the unknown that all humans possess. But in reality, the monster is one with nature – for example, he observes that the moon rising "gave me a sensation of pleasure" (88) and tries to imitate the "pleasant songs of the birds" (88). Aside from living in nature and using natural resources, the monster seeks perhaps the most natural goal – to have a mate. Thus, from a Romantic perspective, the monster is actually not a monster at heart, and it is the humans who are monsters for shunning him from society. Juxtaposed with Frankenstein's character as he creates the monster – reclusive, dogged, and amoral, and again it is Frankenstein who inspires a greater sense of unease with the reader. But ... In contrast, human beings share the existence from God (7.XI.17). In addition, all human beings are the creatures, which are created by God. Human beings could not exist if God does not create them. God is like a luminous body, human beings are a bit of that body (4.XVI.31). God does not create evil, but man makes him be bad in nature, which God creates and put it in the order (2.VIII). Augustine gives an argument about evil. This argument is presented as follows: God creates all things are good. It means that as long as all things exist, they are good. If evil exists, it means it is good. Therefore, it is contradictory. It can be concluded that evil is not a substance; it is a perversity of will be twisted away from the highest substance – God (7.XVI.22). Therefore, by means of evil, we live far away from God, happiness brings us near to God. For Augustine, the definition of happiness becomes easy because happiness only finds in the returning and living closely with God. Everyone is able to know this truth, but man will meet challenges in his return to God. God always presents to man, but man is free to be with God or rejects him. Augustine concludes that happiness is God, whoever does not know God is unhappy (5.IV.7). To identify the subject covered in a book, one often thinks that subject will be exactly themes in the books. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, features twisting turns of events and troubled characters, all which make the novel a classic. The book's characters seem to fall into certain archetypes, such as the hero, the devil incarnate, and the friendly beast, etcetera. It is believed that Roger Chillingworth, the long, lost husband of Hester Prynne and the center of inner turmoil for many characters, is the antagonist. However, Chillingworth, due to the readers' judgements of his actions rather the reasoning behind them, is misperceived and is in need of a reevaluation. Another reason supporting Chillingworth's lack of villainous placement, would be the actual death of Chillingworth, due to his inability to complete his forced vengeance. In the conclusion, the narrator states that Chillingworth died because he lived only for the "pursuit and systematic exercise of revenge" (270). Throughout history, literature has portrayed this transgression of human nature and revealed evil's presence, goals, motives, and strategies. Satan's transformation has not only elucidated the contrast between good and evil but also created an irreversible suffering for his victims. Humans are now vulnerable to the seven deadly sins, and will inevitably continue to suffer the consequences. Essay on Evil and Human Nature Alan Moore's V for Vendetta, William Shakespeare's Richard III, and John Garder's Grendel _______ The topic of evil and from where it originates is one that cannot be proven through factual evidence, and so rather is a notion that exists only in the thoughts of each individual, allowing him or her to possess unique beliefs that affect the way he or she lives. What is considered evil depends upon each individual's view of morality, which constantly changes through the course of that person's life. In "Explaining Evil," Mark Bernstein boldly states, "There is evil in the world... [and] instances of undeserved pain and suffering provide us with our most poignant examples" (151). These undeserved sufferings include natural disasters, child deformities, or even simply an animal getting hit by a car. However, while Bernstein and others may argue that child sickness and deformities are a result of some kind of evil power, the claim can also be made that these afflictions rather are the cause of evilness. In Richard III, Richard affirms, Why, I, in this weak piping time of peace, Have no delight to pass away the time, Unless to see my shadow in the sun And descant on mine own deformity. And therefore, since I cannot prove a lover To entertain these fair well–spoken days, I am determined to prove a villain And hate idle pleasures of these days. (1.1.11) Richard notes that his deformity instigated his evil behavior, therefore denying Bernstein's assumption because it seems as if Richard has only now in this moment decided to become evil, rather than have been born with an innate evil quality. However, the argument can also still be made that Richard has both received evil in the form of a deformity and produced evil through his own actions. When discussing ... • 27. Augustine Nature Of Evil An omnibenevolent God created a man with the capacity to sin; as Augustine has addressed, the evil in man resides from his will. Augustine, however, does not address how evil stems also from the human nature of temptation that was a consequence of the original fall from Eden. Augustine touches on this theme when accounting for the origins of his sin, but he never fully declares it. "I loved to excuse my soul," Augustine begins, "and to accuse something else inside me (I knew not what) but which was not I. But, assuredly, it was I, and it was my impiety that had divided me against myself" (62). Here, Augustine admits to denying his own human nature to sin, and blames it on something beyond his will, such as a result of creation. Bonner, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It can then be deduced that belief to Augustine is not a choice; the choice arises through man's action. Acts of choosing to believe God are simply a reaffirmation of one's belief, while choosing the world and not God in one's actions is simply denying God, although one can never fully disbelieve: the world is a substitute for God, as previously examined. The choice available restricts free will while allowing men to choose their actions, not their belief. Further, the fall of man, where human weaknesses stem from, presupposes God's existence, as does Augustine. Consequently, choices to Augustine reflect our denial or acceptance of the truth that God is real. In this theological perspective, Augustine supports God's existence completely, and his ascetic choice further upholds his belief. God's creation further explains Augustine's perspective on belief, Augustine stating that " [t]he only thing that does not come from [God] is what does not exist," and that combined with " any movement of the will away from [God who is] and towards that which is in a lesser way" (178). Denying God, moving away from God, who exists, is a movement defined as both a "crime and sin" (178). This freedom, again, does not deny God, but is, in spite of his existence, a means to explain one's belief or doubt. Augustine's Confessions clearly describes this path of sin and denial that unquestionably leads to a necessary habit of committing it, resulting in Augustine himself becoming a slave to sin. It is only by God's power, the power than humanity does not possess, that can help man escape the godless way of life that is living through sin. Belief of God then, is not a choice for Augustine; it is our free will that allows the choice of living for or against God, and why resisting temptation and sin and living for God completely is a main idea throughout the Confessions; by choosing the world, one denies ... Specifically, when King Claudius realizes that Hamlet is a threat to his status of being king, he begins to use his brain to construct a well thought out plan for eliminating Hamlet. King Claudius' strategy is described after he brilliantly sedates Laertes' anger from discovering about his father's death. Laertes' discovery led him to march through the castle to direct his sword at King Claudius. "Bring you in fine together/And wager on your heads. • 32. Nature Of Evil In Beowulf Why does the poet of Beowulf choose to give human qualities and distinct territories to Beowulf's monstrous rivals? In the epic, Grendel is a horrible, human–like monster and an outcast in the society. Grendel's mother is another dangerous adversary of Beowulf because she feels the pain of her child's death and desires to take revenge, which is similar to the way a human mother feels for her child. In addition to connecting the traits of the monsters to the humans, the poet also provides them a territory for their survival. In Beowulf, the poet's purpose of bestowing human attributes and granting a residence to Beowulf's opponents is to reflect that the in Anglo–Saxon society, everyone is respected, but the only elements that prevents one from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The poet mentions that Grendel is the descendant "Of Cain, murderous creatures banished/ By God punished forever . . . Shut away from me; they split / Into thousand forms of evil" (Beowulf 21–26). This quote is significant because it proves that the monster belongs to the generation of a human being, Cain. However, the Cain's actions result into the creation of the horrible race of evil monsters. The poet compares Grendel with humans when the fiend's isolation is related to the Cain's wrongdoings. Towards the end of the epic, Beowulf's warriors who abandons him at the time of the battle with the dragon, are also isolated because they conduct a crime by doing so. This shows that the Anglo–Saxon society considers the action of an individual to decide their worth in the society. Because Cain murders Abel, and because the warriors leave Beowulf, their descendants automatically become an outcast in the society. This comparison can be further supported by Wiglaf's statement to the coward warriors, "none of your race/ Will have anything left but their lives" (Beowulf 859–860). This quote proves that Grendel is similar to human beings because is evil actions render him an outcast just like the actions of the coward warriors recluse them from the society. In conclusion, the poet shows that Grendel and humans have same attributes because evil connects them and isolates them from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Neurobiology Of Evil Neurobiology of Evil – Nature and Nurture THE CONTROVERSY: Ever since Plato and Aristotle, Locke and Descartes, and Charles Darwin, the controversy of nature and nurture has been ageless, its debate still continuing on today. Likewise, "the forces that produce those with antisocial behavior are still obscure to researchers; one end of the spectrum viewing the issue as largely the result of genetic or biological factors, whereas at the other end posit that it is entirely of social environment" (Hare 165). There are many that are skeptic with the idea of genetic predisposition of evil – the idea that their own family with biologically innate risk factors for violence is indeed alarming, especially if nothing can be done about it. Some also worry that acknowledging such biological disabilities "will result in a society that takes a soft approach to crime, holding no one accountable for his or her actions, furthermore using "biology to stigmatize ostensibly innocent individuals" (Raine). It is growing rather difficult, however, to avoid the mounting evidence. Advanced science can now utilize modern technology to distinguish brain anatomies of specific individuals that will grow up to express dangerously antisocial behavior. "With each passing year, society is at the point where the genetic basis of criminal behavior is well established" (Raine). But even if neurobiology is found to be the predominant factor in determining antisocial or even psychopathic behavior in a person, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Human Nature Is Evil Human nature is evil with motives behind everything, the lacking of care for others, and the taking advantage of others. A great example of someone who has a motive behind everything, is business owners. Why do you think Jim McIngvale (Mattress Mack) opened up his mattress store for others to stay during the storm, it's a genius marketing ploy. When everyone needs to buy a new mattress to replace the one destroyed or someone who saw what he did for others, they're going to want to buy for someone who help them and or helped others. It showed that he was a caring man helping out others during their time of need, so they believe they're giving their money to someone who cares for others. Thousands of companies all over the world do this daily, they show they doing something helping the public out, but in reality they had a motive of helping out sales instead of pure intentions of just doing it because they can.Hobbes "Peace is war in disguise." • 35. The Nature Of Evil In Macbeth The Nature of Evil Macbeth, a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, explores the evil nature that is inherent in people and the consequences when it is allowed to run rampant. This tragedy presents the evil that is inside every person and tells the story through the eyes of the person who chooses to give in to its actions. Macbeth presents the inner nature of man as something that can be nurtured and that can corrupt people's character. One of the best examples of evil's power to corrupt someone's character and life is Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth was Macbeth's wife. She wanted to bring Macbeth's ambitions and the witches' prophecies to life. She had to pray to demons in order to let her evil nature grow so that she could accomplish these goals. After receiving Macbeth's letter about the prophecies, she began to think that Macbeth's nature was too "good" for him to carry out his ambitions. "Glamis thou art, and Cawdor; and shalt be what thou art promised. Yet I do fear thy nature; It is too full o'th' milk of human kindness. To catch the nearest way: thou wouldst be great, Art not without ambition, but without the illness should attend it"(1.5.13–17). Lady Macbeth was saying that he achieved part of the prophecies, but he was too full of compassion in order to become king; that he was not willing to do what is necessary to achieve his ambitions. This means that Lady Macbeth very intentionally let her evil nature in order to carry out the plans. When she prayed to the demons, she allowed her inner, destructive nature to take hold and enable her act in ways that she could have with her previous nature. She also managed to persuade Macbeth into abandoning his morals, thus fulfilling the second prophecy. This leads to grave consequences that bring about their downfall later in the plot. The next example of evil's corruption is Macbeth. Macbeth is the protagonist through which the nature of evil is most explored. It all started when Lady Macbeth persuaded him to kill Duncan. This is where the internal struggle of Macbeth's good and evil natures is shown. "...then, as his host, who should against his murderer shut the door, not bear the knife myself"(1.7.14–16). • 37. Are Humans Good or Evil by Nature? A famous philosopher Socrates once said, "the unexamined life is not worth living." With that idea, the question "Are Human Beings Intrinsically Evil?" has been asked by philosophers for many years. It is known as one of the unanswerable questions. Determinists have come to the conclusion that we are governed by the laws of science, that there is nothing we can do about ourselves being evil because we naturally are. Evil is simply the act of causing pain. In this essay I will argue that human beings are born with a natural reaction to "fear and chaos" to be instinctively evil. The primary evidence that people are generally evil is evident by the number of wars. Most countries have experienced their share of wars. World War One was the ... Golding believes that there is an evil seed inside all of us and given the right circumstances, human beings are capable of anything. The boys' evil was described in his novel once they were left in an unsupervised society it became very chaotic. In a part of his novel, Golding describes the boys' fear of a beast. With that fear, one night a boy that was away from the group came back and was killed. The boys thought that he was the beast coming from the bushes. Golding has given us an example that people do not have to learn to be evil but are born with the natural reaction to become evil once afraid or in a chaos. Another piece of literature that demonstrates people's evil is Shakespeare's "Macbeth". The story is that witches told Macbeth that he would become king, with temptation to become king, the fear in becoming king, and the confusion caused by the witches evil became possible. With the help of his wife, he killed the people who stood in his was to become king. Literature has shown that it is possible for human beings in extremely confusing situations and with fear can be become evil. • 38. Evil And Evil : The Problem Of Evil In Nature The problem of evil refers to the question of how to reconcile the existence of evil within a world governed by an omnipotent God. Flannery O'Connor suggested that through their works of art, authors should make it their goal to "give the devil his due." This to say that, by acknowledging and analyzing the qualities of the varying representations of evil in art, there is a movement towards answering the larger question(s). In bringing these "devils" into existence and in giving them sentience, authors are effectively providing prospective answers for where and how evil takes shape in the world. Authors of Modern British literature engaged with this discussion in a wide variety of techniques. Some suggested that evil was an inherent part of human existence, and that by extension an inherent part of the individual, while others explored the idea of evil as an independent force or manifestation capable of answering for why innocent suffer. Both Flannery O'Connor and Oscar Wilde chose the latter consideration. In The Picture of Dorian Gray and in "The Lame Shall Enter First" outside influence(s) are held accountable for the misconducts of the given characters. For instance, Dorian is provoked, and arguably pressured into his sins by Lord Henry Watton who instills the belief in Dorian that youth is necessary in order to achieve happiness.
