Nina Simone Research Paper
Nina Simone was one of the most unique, influential, and gifted singers of her generation. She was
born on February 21, 1933 as Eunice Waymon, in Tryon, North Carolina. Her mother was a preacher
and she started playing piano at an early age, around 3 or 4 at her mother s church, as she was playing
piano at a local recital she caught the eye of an older white woman willing to give her lessons. Nina
went on to studying classical piano for 5 years with the woman, learning the stylings of the classical
greats such as Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, and Brahms. As a child she felt so isolated, spending up to 7
hours a day practicing the piano, and growing up in the south in the segregation era, she felt as she
could not fit in neither with the white or black community, even when surrounded by other children all

After 1 ½ years the money ran out, so she sought out to apply for a musical scholarship, once again
facing racism, not only did she do quite well in her audition, but she had mastered many classical
songs, yet still was not accepted due to the color of her skin. Out of options, she managed to find a job
playing the piano at a crummy old bar in Atlantic City, where one day her boss mentioned that if she
wanted to keep her job she had to sing, thus Nina Simone is born. Not wanting to disappoint her
mother with the thought that she was playing the devils music she created her stage name which she is
now famously known as. Nina emerged on the professional stage in 1960 at a jazz festival, and
quickly gained recognition with her baritone voice, not only was her voice so unique that it grasped
anyone s attention, but the way she cultivated the new sound of jazz was amazing. Nina had a way
with music, mixing classical piano sounds with jazz, and folk music, she had created her own

Chemistry Coursework – Rates of Reaction Investigation
Introduction
In this investigation I am going to be investigating the reaction between marble chips and hydrochloric
acid, and to see what differences in the rate of this reaction arise when different concentrations of acid
are used. Below is the word equation for this reaction:
Calcium Carbonate + Hydrochloric Acid = Calcium Chloride + Carbon Dioxide + Water Below is the
fully balanced chemical equation for this reaction.
CaCo3 + HCl #61664; CaCl2 + CO2 + H2O
Aim
The aim of this investigation is to find out whether the concentration of the acid affects the rate of
reaction between the acid and marble chips.

Secession Dbq Essay
During the 1850s, the political climate in America was one of tension, turmoil, and division. Although
there was great opposition for the scandalous Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854, the bill passed and
resulted in the creation of the Republican party. The creation of a new political party portrayed a
division among specific regional states within America. Ultimately, disagreement with the Union
brought forth the topic of secession. In 1861, Texas Governor Sam Houston faced a difficult decision:
to favor or oppose the secession of Texas. Union Sam Houston: The idea of secession could be an act
of defiance, rather than defense. Inherently, our rights are not being stripped from us. Under the
constitution, our rights as individuals and of the state ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Union wishes to suppress and maybe even outlaw slavery, while we aim to expand slavery. The
Union supported a free Kansas while we proposed for the state to decide whether they would allow
slavery. If we stay in the Union, the desire to abolish slavery may be forced upon us. Slavery is the
backbone of our economy and we must preserve it. Union Sam Houston: On the other hand, it might
just be better to stay together. We are legitimized as a Union and are recognized by foreign affairs.
This impacts our trade which promotes a stabilized economy and nation. We are stronger together and
differences can be worked on through compromise. Secession Sam Houston: Compromise may be out
of the picture because we have experienced wrongdoings by the Union. For instance, the Union s
violation of returning our fugitive slaves under the Fugitive Slave Law is unacceptable. Additionally,
it would be more ideal to have the ability of setting our own tariffs and slave policy. The idea of
compromise is naive and may continue leading to the suppression of Southern desires. Union Sam
Houston: Maybe we are just not willing to sacrifice our own interests for such compromise. If we
voice our interest to work together, we could avoid violence. Essentially, persisting with secession
could lead to a civil

Analysis of Mark Drolsbough´s Deaf Again
In the autobiography Deaf Again, Mark Drolsbaugh writes about his life being born hearing, growing
up hard of hearing, to eventually becoming deaf. By writing this book, he helps many people view
from his perspective on what it is like for someone to struggle trying to fit in the hearing society.
Through his early years, his eyes were closed to the deaf world, being only taught how to live in a
hearing world. Not only does the book cover his personal involvement, but it covers some important
moments in deaf history. It really is eye opening because instead of just learning about deaf culture
and deaf history, someone who lived through it is actually explaining their experiences.
The story takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

by with the help of some friends who would further explain the lesson. Once he was finally a
freshman, he was given his first interpreter. A whole new world of learning was opened to him,
keeping him up to speed in classes while also keeping him fully involved. The interpreters given
assisted him through high school, and also helped him accomplish being the first deaf student to
graduate from GFS.
A major turning point in the authors life was when he attended Gallaudet University. At Gallaudet, he
was surrounded by deaf peers and signing professors. To him, this was unbelievable. He was no longer
behind from interpreters relaying information after it had already been said. Mark expresses this
emotional state by saying he is no longer living in a fishbowl anymore (pg. 111). At one point earlier
in the book, Mark compares himself to someone born underwater having to live in a glass bubble;
someone who is unfortunately an outcast from the rest. But with the help of special scuba diving gear,
you had the ability to interact and swim with the other fish. Although the scuba gear was
accommodating in many ways, it was heavy and uncomfortable, and as much as it helped you interact
with the fish, you never were able to swim like them (Pg. 44). In order to find out who he

both physical exchanges and decision making. TobyMac s deep implication in his music video Lose
My Soul shines a light on Blu s slightly different motive and thoughts in Blu Collar Worker . These
motives are based on the notion that the soul is ultimately greater in value than any form of currency.
Most people tend to make materialistic decisions to satisfy their temporary needs. The Lose My Soul

scopes the shop, and leaves. Following this, a group of three men also enter with dark hoodies on, and

purchase a handgun. They all exit, and the one with the gun walks back in. He heads straight for the
cashier to draw his gun, but only to set it down to return to the shop. The situation is very inexplicit, as
we are unsure about what exactly both the man with the laptop and gun did after leaving. We can only
speculate, but it is clear that the man with the gun had a change of heart and chose to keep his soul.
During this moment, we hear ...forgive us when we get consumed by the things of the world. The man
was consumed by his neediness of those material things briefly. While TobyMac s message is
conveyed using materialism and objects, Blu s message is expressed using materialism and people,
specifically women. With all of the issues he has gone through with girls and money, Blu speaks

thoughts in this context essentially convey a repercussion of his avaricious choices. In both texts,
someone has the opportunity to make the recurring decision, but both go down a different path. The
man in Lose My Soul decides he does not want to live a life without a soul, and Blu chooses the path
of his rapping passion and money, regardless of the loss or damage to his

Smoke Bomb In The Culling
Smoke bomb is a projectile in The Culling. It breaks on effect, making a large cloud of smoke and
applying a temporary blindness to opponents. It is particularly powerful for fleeing and baiting
enemies into traps. It can also be very effective when paired with blades and Brutus by blinding an
opponent and backstabbing him. It is make with only a rock at a gas tank, and can be used to create

The first bomb were invented in China in the 13th century. The Chinese initially started using
gunpowder in hand held grenades and created smoke bombs. One of these bombs, the thunderbolt
ball, had black powder on the outside that detonated a bamboo center loaded with iron pieces. During
the Northern Song Dynasty (960 1126), Zeng Gongliang, a designing master, recorded three formulas

most common method used is potassium nitrate (oxidizer), sugar (fuel) and baking soda (reducing

moderated by the baking soda so that the smoke bomb creates smoke for a longer period of time rather
than just burning out. During the combustion of the smoke bomb, the sugar will be oxidized to carbon
dioxide and water. The nitrogen in the potassium nitrate will be reduced to nitrogen gas. The
potassium will end up as potassium carbonate (the carbon coming from the CO2 from the sugar).

Squat Exercise Essay
The Squat exercise workout for Power
This workout uses the squat exercise to increase your power for the Squat event in Powerlifting. We
will explain the proper form for the Squat and the benefits of the Squat also.
The proper form for the Squat exercise begins with bar placement. You want to have the bar rest on
your traps, not your neck. By squeezing your shoulder blades together, you create a shelf on the top of
your traps. Position the bar on top of this shelf and across the rear deltoids. Hold it in place by
gripping the bar with a hand spacing that is comfortable for you, and tucking your elbows under the
bar.
The next step in proper form for the Squat is stance. Now that you have the bar in position, take a deep

Tao Te Ching Of Lao-Tzu Analysis
Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu is a book with many chapters in it showing the two different sides to
basically everything. To break it down, Tao means path or way , Te means to get , and Ching means
great book . So the Tao was the force that controlled the universe and appreciated the way, to find
balance between opposites. The book, Tao Te Ching has been said to been written by a Laozi an old
master and has been said that the true author (or authors ) name has been lost. In the chapters between
the book it tells how to live a life of integrity and of greatness per say. It also has contradictions or
paradoxes which allows us to see the both perspectives of each side. It shows us that there are always
two sides to everything. Tao Te Ching ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was the little things that he did that made my opinion change on him. You can t judge others on their
appearance because there might be beauty inside of them or ugliness inside of them either one.
The other contradiction in the Tao Te Ching was good and evil . This concept can kind of connect back
to the ugliness and beauty in the ugliness kind of being evil and beauty being good. Of course, as it
has already been expressed before by the author of this book, there are two sides to everything. When
things are good, they are good of course but there is always something that is going to change that.
The same thing happens when things are bad, they are bad but then it has to change to good at some
point.
What I thought of when I saw good and evil was the tree of knowledge of good and evil from the
Bible. In the Bible, near the beginning of the book Genesis 2:9 it says that there are two trees, the tree
of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of
the ground trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the
tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil . When Adam and Eve sinned and ate from
the tree of knowledge of good and evil, that s when the concept of good and evil became true. When
things were going good, something would upset that and something bad would happen. What I believe
is that if Adam and Eve hadn t have sinned then

Restorative Justice Model And Domestic Violence
Introduction Beginning in the late 1960 s there began a shift in societal values from punishment of
criminal behavior towards addressing the needs of the victims of crime. The questions being asked
shifted from what law was broken to who was hurt. (Calhoun, 2013) It can be said that even today
there still appears some controversy over the effectiveness and place of restorative justice however it
has begun to infiltrate legislation. In Kansas K.S.A. 21 5414 (Domestic Battery) recently passed the
requirement that all domestic violence offenders are required to undergo assessment and treatment
from a certified batterers intervention program; a form of restorative justice. With this in mind the
focus of subsequent discussion will be around defining terminology in restorative justice and domestic
violence, effectiveness and implications, use in social work case management, and potential
improvements to be made.
Description of Restorative Justice Model and Domestic Violence Offenders One of the major roots
founded in the core of restorative justice is the connection, no matter how damaging, that links a
victim to their offender. There is forever a connection developed between the victim and offender
despite the lack of a previous knowledge of each other. The practice of RJ has been developed on
three baselines; preparation, encounter, and follow up. During preparation the provider focuses on

Figurative Language In Frankenstein
In Frankenstein, Shelley uses a variety of figurative language that contribute to the novel s depressing
atmosphere. Figurative language, such as allusions, personifications, and similes, establishes a
relationship between two literally contrasting subjects. It prompts readers to more closely analyze the
subjects for underlying similarities. It can also add to depth to the piece and enhance the overall novel
by making abstract concepts more digestible.
During the monster s narration, the author utilizes a series of biblical allusions to express the monster
s anguish and his relationship with Victor. While the monster identifies with Satan, he also points out,
Satan had his companions, fellow devils, to admire and encourage him; but I am solitary and abhorred
(Shelley 93). Satan is usually viewed as a miserable creature, because he was exiled from heaven and
can no longer live in God s glory. However, the monster reveals that even Satan is more fortunate than
him, because at least, Satan is not completely isolated in Hell. The allusion emphasizes the extent of
the monster s loneliness. Additionally, the monster reveals, Many times, I consider Satan as the fitter
emblem of my condition... (Shelley 93). Shelley compares the monster to the biblical figure, Satan,
who embodies evil. She emphasizes the monster s miserable existence, because similar to Satan, his
existence has only brought tragedy and evil upon the world. Overall, her comparison to Satan induces

The Tale Of The Crazed Hook Man Or Death By Tanning Bed
Urban legends exist in every society and change with the times adapting to the new innovations that
occur. An urban legend is a story that has been passed down through generations with the intention of
being informative whether it causes fear or joy. The only problem with urban legends is the fact that
they are so hard to be proven true. Sometimes they have actual events attached with them but are
obviously false; people try to attach relevant topics to legends to make them more believable. Some
examples of these are the tale of the crazed Hook man or death by tanning bed. Each was related to
some kind of event that was popular but it made it more believable. The legend that has caught my eye
is the tale of the Hook man because it causes fear and creates an atmosphere that is similar to a foggy
night: thick and visibility is limited. The legend adds a sense of fear and anxiety, which will discussed
in the latter part of the paper. The main focus is to show what causes these two emotions and how they
relate to the myth. The Hook man legend is about when a couple at the local Lover s Lane hears on the
radio about an escaped mental patient. This patient has been said to be headed in the direction of their
location and one hand has been replaced with a meat hook. After hearing this, the girl becomes
frightened and wants to be taken home, but at first her boyfriend doesn t want to leave. She persisted

Brad Edwards, a writer for ESPN.com, has this to say about the computer system: Though this may be
the weakest part of the (BCS) equation, it can still make a difference. Last year, pollsters eventually
overlooked Wisconsin s loss to Cincinnati, but the computers didn t. The result: the Badgers had an
average computer ranking of 7.71 despite ranking fourth in both polls. 7.71 is the average of where the
team is in the rankings among the top twenty five teams in the nation according to the seven
computers.
The second part of the Bowl Championship Series formula is the two polls. One comes from the
associated press and the other comes from coaches around the league. The Associated Press polls are
organized by a number of different newspapers, magazines, and media. While the NCAA football
coaches put together the Coaches poll. This is probably the most critical element of the four because it
has only two subsets (the media and coaches polls) to be averaged (Edwards). The polls are run
similarly to the computers; the two ranking are simply averaged together. The impact held by each
poll is greater than that of any one computer or any one opponent. It is no coincidence that the top two
poll teams have played for the national title in both years of the

How The Current Copyright Laws Are Not Be Reformed For...
Due to how abusable current copyright laws are, they must be reformed to prevent copyright trolling.
According to Matthew Sag, The essence of trolling is that the plaintiff is more focused on the business
of litigation than on selling a product or service or licensing their IP to third parties to sell a product or
a service ( Copyright Trolling, An Empirical Study page 4). Copyright trolls seek to acquire their
income from suing others on copyright violations, rather than continually creating new works and
using copyright to protect them. Copyright, whether one agrees with the concept or not, was not
designed for this purpose. People should not be allowed to make a business off of suing others. This is
not only unjust, but wastes the court s time with actual crimes. The United States must reform its
current laws to prevent this type of behavior from happening. According to Parker Higgins, Like email
spammers, copyright trolls depend on the ability to cheaply cast a very wide net, sending out hundreds
or thousands of accusations at once and getting settlement payments back from some percentage (
Copyright trolls suffer big loss par. 3). Many trolls do not target specific groups or people; rather, they
spread it in such a way that any company or organization can accidentally misuse it. This creates an
environment in which it is impossible for many groups to tell if they can use another party s content
without invoking a ludicrous copyright lawsuit. This is not a

Drug Pros And Cons Essay
There are also some pro and cons of drug testing. Although drugs are seen in a negative manner there
are some advantages. Performance enhancements are also used to help recover from injuries quickly.
Drugs can also help reduce anxiety, pain, and stress. Drugs are known to have more of a negative
effect on health than positive (Jost, Kenneth 24). Although, they are known to have a short term
enhancement they, cause impotence, worsening acne, balding and steroid rage. (Jost, Kenneth 26).
Another con of drug use is creating an unfair advantage. Performance enhancements do not create a
level playing field but rather a competitive advantage. The use of drugs can also create health
problems and death. Once addicted it may be hard to become sober. The use of steroids can create
liver abnormalities, altered appearances, and psychiatric illnesses(Wong, Glenn 50). Finally, the use of
drugs can create legal penalties and expenses. A major case in the professional sport industry that has
a huge influence on anti doping are the following is BALCO. BALCO is a scandal that involves the
use of performance enhancements. Barry Bonds a former Major League Baseball player was found to
be in a scandal with his former trainer Greg Anderson. Because Anderson was found guilty of giving
athletes steroids this led to the speculation of Bonds using drugs. His defense was that the drugs were

The key to experience is point of view. It is the subjective character of point of view that confounds
understanding of the objective experience. Lets say there is a group of individuals observing a

nature of the different points of view within the group that results in altered experiences and
perceptions of the painting. While one individual sees a violent message portrayed through the brush

This rather abstract notion of phenomenal consciousness is simplified to the term P consciousness . P
consciousness is phenomenal experience. Everything that P consciousness can be is, in turn,
everything that experience can be. It is the matter of when we utilize our senses (see, hear, smell, etc.)
to gain information from the environment, as well as when an individual experiences internal
reflection through sensations, thoughts, or emotions. All of these actions are continuously occurring
with or without the intention of doing so. P consciousness is always representational of the
information derived from the event being experienced. Contrarily, Access Consciousness is introduced
as the mode of consciousness in which representation, unlike P consciousness, is poised for control of
speech, reasoning, and action (pg. 208 Block) . It is this mode of consciousness whose content can be
broadcasted to communicate one s inner events, unlike the phenomenal qualities of P consciousness.
The distinguishing factor between these two modes of consciousness is the element of qualia. P
consciousness is phenomenal while A consciousness is representational; however, given that P
consciousness can also be representational, P consciousness can overlap in the A consciousness realm
during reasoning or the execution of actions. A consciousness is a

In spite of these similarities, there are some key differences between the authors positions. For
instance, Ercikan and Roth argue that both research activities have more in common than is believed.
They propose that a continuum between qualitative and quantitative characteristics observed in nature
could resonate within social science. A further difference concerns standardisation. Ercikan and Roth
identify that both involve subjective judgments in the construction of data. In quantitative study,
although greater structuring of scoring protocols implies standardising of evaluation and
interpretation, deviations are inevitable. These factors limit the replicability of the interpretation which
reflects what is happening. Inquiries, therefore, are objective as well as subjective, reproducible and

The Film Genre In The Wizard Of Oz
Genres can be identified as westerns, gangster, horror, romantic comedy, musical, mystery, film noir,
fantasy, and science fiction that may also include numerous other sub genres. Genre is the term used to
characterize groups of similar texts that share certain recognizable conventions and that belong in the
same literary tradition (Genre Theory, 2011). Genre films are normally easily recognizable as part of a
certain genre. The film Genre I will be focusing on is Fantasy. Any film with unreal, magical, or
impossible situations, characters, or settings, most often including sub dramas, Such as, a fantasy
romance, or a fantasy romantic comedy. Or a suspenseful fantasy film. Fantasy films are always
breaking the limitations to the real world, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In one scene they use high key lighting to show more of an exciting and fantasy scene to stimulate the
audience s sense of excitement in the film. However, in other parts of the film low key lighting can be
seen. Like when Dorothy meets the wizard for the very first time. These scenes create a scary,
suspenseful feeling for the audience. Another scene where they use low key lighting is at the
beginning of the film when Dorothy is taken by the tornado. They use this Tanique to draw in the
adiance and make them cringe at what is going to happen next. When it comes to high key lighting the
scene where Dorothy starts her adventure on the yellow brick road is a great example. This part of the
film is exciting and happy and the high key lighting compliments that clip very well. These
Techniques are very important in the film because each bring out a different type of emotion that the
author is trying to display. Throughout this film the author takes us on an emotion of roller coaster
from excited, too scared to sespense and then back to excitement. To gets these different emotions
lighting is key it makes for a greater sense of emtion for the adiance thus wanting them to watch more

Analysis Of I Just Wanna Be Average By Mike Rose
We go to school day after day and see the same things happening. We never have the time to question
these things or to even stop and take a second to wonder, is this the right way to handle this or is this
what I am supposed to be doing with my life. From the moment we walk through those school doors
until we leave at the end of the day there is nothing but competition. There are many different kinds of
competition, whether it is in a sport for school or for who has the best academic scores. A second in
the day does not go by where there are not two students competing for the winning spot. In Mike
Rose, I Just Wanna Be Average we are able to see that there is no self motivation for Rose when he
realizes his test scores have been mixed up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many people believe that we need to have our children competing to be the best of the best when they
are young. Therefore, giving them a head start on a great future. In Rose he says, Students will float to
the mark you set. (Rose 154) This means that if we set the mark at college, there are kids that will
compete to be the best out of their class and will strive to become the most successful. Although we do
not realize this, but by setting that mark it is giving the slackers something to aim for even though they
never seem to compete for anything. This means that by having an environment that is willing to push
even the slackers in school shows that they to can have something to compete for in the future. The
environment of students plays an important role in helping students compete to become better. We
tend to see better scores from students in private schools rather than students in public schools, this is
because students are pushed harder in private schools and are competing to be the best because they
know that if they start to fall behind they will be left in the dust. These students become the slackers.
Problems start to form when the parents of the slackers start to shelter them and say that competing is
not that important. Young adults are smart and they see this as an opportunity to use their parents.
When reading Katherine S. Newman, The Accordion Family: Boomerang Kids, Anxious Parents, and
the Private Toll of Global Competition we find it interesting when she brings up the topic on how
Adult children are migrating home or refraining from leaving in the first place, and there they stay for
many years longer. (Newman 91) With this being said we can right away notice that there is no
motivation to become better or to even compete in the work for to be able to be living on their

Research Paper on Hurricane Wilma
Hurricane Wilma
November 24, 2015
Geology 1401
Introducion: Cyclones, Hurricanes, and Typhoons, these cyclonic storms are known by many names
but are all born from the same mechanism: low pressure systems. Also known as depressions.
Thankfully, most hurricanes form only during hurricane season, which is from June 1st to November
30th. Within this season about 85 percent of the most intense hurricanes and 60 percent of minor
Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes originate from African easterly waves (NOAA Cyclone
Report). These waves, which have a wavelength of 2000 to 2500 kilo meters, originate close to or
from the highlands of Ethiopia, Africa. Not all easterly waves become hurricanes, but the ones that do

Thanks to its 213 trillion teraflops, NOAA is able to release fairly accurate 5 day forecasts of
hurricanes. Granted, after 3 days the accuracy of these forecasts declines but they do serve as very
accurate maps within those first 3 days.
Hurricane Wilma On the evening of October 15, 2005 tropical depression number 24 appeared in
Atlantic Ocean, its winds at a mere 35 kilo meters per hour, pressure of about 1004 mb and heading
West at a pace of 5 kilo meters per hour. In the next few hours, the winds of depression number 24
gradually increased to 45 km/h and on the morning of October 16, it had reached speeds of 55 km/h.
On the 17nth of October this depression developed into tropical storm Wilma , with wind speeds at
about 65 km/h and an internal pressure of 1000 mb. At about 10 A.M the Yucatan Peninsula was
issued a warning, alerting them of the possible dangers from Wilma. Following an erratic pattern of
movement, experts were not sure where Wilma was headed. On the morning of October 18 Wilma was
about 810 km from Punta Allen, Mexico. Wilma once again intensified reaching speeds of 120 km/h,
by the end of the day it was officially a category II hurricane at 175 km/h. On the 19nth at 4 A.M,
about 595 km from Punta Allen, Mexico hurricane Wilma quickly reached wind speeds of 280 km and
pression levels of 980 mb, at these speeds Wilma was now classified as a category V. The rate at

Marjane Satrapi
Throughout her work, Marjane Satrapi feigns the mind of a child, herself, growing up during a
controversially known event. The Iranian Revolution got a lot of educated talk from people who had
no idea what was truly going on in that country until long down the line, and in her work, Marjane
presents a side of the story from a child thrust into the change during one of the many crucial periods
in her life. Blatantly, the visual representation holds a link with a childish art style that would interest
children prone to enjoying the sunday comics on their parent s newspaper. Additionally, the lack of
color and use of black and white can almost feign the hisotrical premise the story has, though to be
more accurate, the color TV was brought to

Differences Between Fahrenheit 451 Book And Movie
Besides sound effects and visuals in a movie, descriptive language in a book, both are usually very
similar. Specifically, between the book and the movie Fahrenheit 451, the two share many of the main
ideas, but have multiple differences. A couple of the top major differences in the movie are that
Clarisse doesn t die and they omit to tell or mention that there is a war going on. Some similarities are
the characters personalities and looks. All of these things have impact on how the movie and book
contrast and compare to each other. Characters in the book and movie are mostly the same to each
other. For example, Mildred/Linda and Clarisse are almost exactly the same to their character in the
movie and book. Clarisse is still curious and imaginative while, Mildred/Linda is still shallow. In the

However, they both have an important role in both types of fahrenheit 451. Clarisse s role is to ask
Montag questions to make him realize that the society isn t good for him. In the book, Clarisse s death
is important because it makes Montag realize that what she was saying about the society was right
nevertheless, they didn t kill Clarisse in the movie. So in the end, Mildred s/Linda s role was very akin
to Clarisse s role. Her role was to help him realize that the society was bad by being the example. One
quote that shows that Clarisse is role is to make Montag realize that the society isn t good is I don t

Economic Viability
As debates continue to escalate regarding climate change, many countries agree that action is needed,
but few are quick to act. The countries involved have to carefully consider the economic viability of
alternatives, respond to various political influences, as well as cater to their growing populations. This
complicates the issue and makes it unlikely that we will see any significant unified efforts anytime
soon.
Converting from a widely used energy source can an expensive endeavor. One must consider the costs
of establishing the new infrastructure to support the energy source. Despite these high startup costs,
most subsidies are offered for established non renewable forms of energy. In fact, many countries even

For comparison, the petrochemical industry requires an investment of $220,000 per job. Not only does
ethanol production require a smaller investment, it boasts a yield of jobs per unit of energy produced
that is 152 times that of the oil industry. The immense economic benefits to both the producers and
consumers of ethanol fuel have led Brazils to embrace ethanol and approach energy independence.
(Goldemberg, Coelho and Guardab 2008)
As stated in class, national as well as international politics also play a large role in energy source
choice. Germany s use of natural gas is heavily influenced by its relationship with Russia. Germany is
the second largest importer of natural gas in the world at 79 billion cubic meters, and it relies on
Russia, the second largest importer of natural gas in the world, for 39% of its natural gas. As a result
of this energy dependence, Germany s relationship with Russian can have significant impacts on its
energy use. (Guillén 2017)
The politics of energy use can be felt just as strongly within a country. In the United States, companies
spend millions of dollars a year lobbying Congress. Between 2009 and 2014, there was a total of $3.1
billion spent on lobbying environmental issues. Pacific Gas and Electric is one of the greenest utilities
in the county and in 2008 it spent $27 million lobbying Congress which was only second to Exxon
Mobil which spent

Totality And Infinity Rhetorical Analysis
Recognizing the Other as a Path to Morality
In Totality and Infinity, Levinas examines how people can treat each other morally. You must
recognize the dichotomy of the Same (yourself) and the Other (the other person). You must recognize
that the Other infinitely transcends your own categories. We see the Other by looking into their face,
we communicate with the Other by using language, and by doing this, we can prevent going to war
with the Other. Finally, I provide some practical applications of Levinas thought, such as how it can
help us avoid inappropriately judging people who are of different socioeconomic levels than we are,
and how it can help us understand cultural differences.
The Same is the self; it to say I to yourself. To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, we might describe people with different adjectives, such as intelligent, kind, or gentle.
Or we might say that they re an INFJ according to the Myer Briggs Personality Indicator, or a 4
according to the Enneagram test, and so on. However, these tools are ultimately insufficient, since
they limit the infinity of the Other through established categories.
We use language in order to traverse the infinite distance between the Same and the Other. This
distance is untraversable, and at the same time traversed (62). Truth arises when a person recognizes
the Other as such, where a being separated from the other is no engulfed in him, but speaks to him
(62).
In every moment, we are ready to go to war with another person. We do this when hunger and fear
make us think that it is worth it to hold ourselves over the other person, for hunger and fear can prevail
over every human resistance and every freedom (35). However, we always have the freedom to resist
hunger and fear, however tempted we may be, as freedom consists in knowing that freedom is in peril
(35). It is imperative to resist the urge to treat the other as merely an object, and that we perpetually
postpone this urge (35). When we do go to war, we must obscure the face of the Other, since if we
recognized the face of the Other, then we would most likely not be able to go through with our war
towards

America s Role In The Civil War
Throughout history wars have decided the fate of nations, and have come to define them for decades
afterwards. The United States has been involved in several wars throughout its relatively short history.
Some might say that the Revolutionary War is what defined this country, and they are, for the most
part, correct. However, the war that truly defined our country was the Civil War fought in the U.S
from 1861 1865. Of the hundreds of Civil War battles fought two stand out above the rest. One such
battle was fought in the northern region of the of the United States, known at the time as the Union.
That battle was the Battle of Gettysburg. The other battle was fought in the south, which was known at
that time as the Confederacy, and is called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first of many factors is Robert E. Lee was facing forces that were almost double his own with
60,000 of his own troops facing 80,000 union troops(History.com Staff). Robert E. Lee decided to
split his own forces and attack Hooker s right flank. He gave Stonewall Jackson this important task.
According to History.com Early on May 2, Jackson and 30,000 men followed a circuitous route that
brought them against Hooker s weak right flank. Jackson s attack, begun in late afternoon, was a
brilliant tactical success that destroyed half of Hooker s line... (History.com Staff). This move by
Robert E. Lee led to his greatest victory of the Civil War, and gave him the strategic initiative, he
needed to invade the North (History.com Staff). This is why the Battle of Chancellorsville will go

Meditation and the Brain Essay
Meditation and the Brain
When discussing the relationship of brain and behavior, the materialist view of human experience runs
into conflict with the historically dominant religious accounts. Recent studies, however, suggests that
there may be a middle view between the two world views. Religions, especially Buddhism, stress the
role of meditation in one s spiritual growth. Meditation has tangible psychological and physiological
benefits, though, which can be explained strictly in neurobiological terms. Understanding of how
meditation affects the brain, and, by extension, human behavior, also gives insight into consciousness,
the role of feedback loops, and the nature of the I function.
The goal of Buddhist meditation is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of seeing a soul or a mind as the seat of personal identity, in Buddhism, the self is to be found
in processes. Meditation, then, has the therapeutic effect of disengaging the practitioner from self
consciousness, freeing the mind. The view of the world without the construct of a permanent essence
enables one to experience reality as it really is (3). It is important to note that Buddhism does not
distinguish mental processes from other senses. Just as seeing takes a visual object, the mind takes a
mental object (1). Just as the eye is free to take in different visual objects, the mind is free, as well.
While meditation aims to develop single pointedness of mind, it is ultimately to free it from external
objects. The focus is on the process of breathing, in Zen, and, eventually, one can reach a state where
one is not considering anything (2). Zen considers the blank mind stage to be a higher form of
consciousness because it is free from attachments.
Indeed, one of the goals of meditation is the mindful state, which is awareness of objects, mind states,
and physical states but not attachment to them. Buddhism puts a great emphasis on empirical
understanding of the world (3), through meditation and through observation, and the mindful state is
one which recognizes distractions and attachments, and acknowledges them, in order to achieve
awareness of one s true nature. While a person in meditation does not dwell on possible objects of

The American Political Tradition
The American Political Tradition published in 1948 was written by a well known historian at
Colombia University. Richard Hofstadter was born on August 6, 1916, in Buffalo, New York. He
attended both the University of Buffalo and Columbia University where he studied philosophy and
history. Hofstadter was married twice and later in 1970 died from leukemia. Throughout his life
Hofstadter had a lot of published works including Social Darwinism in American Thought, William
Leggett, Spokesman of Jacksonian Democracy, The Age of Reform, The United States: the History of

America. The main people talked about in the next chapters were Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson,
John C. Calhoun, Abraham Lincoln, Wendell Philips, William Jennings Bryan, Theodore Roosevelt,
Woodrow Wilson, Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and a few others that were mentioned. The
chapters explained so much, for example it explained Franklin D. Roosevelt s New Deal and how it
revived American liberalism. Hofstadter was able to inform the reader that the people in history were
not exactly as they seemed. The men had their own opinions on things and believed in certain ways of
life and how everything should be done. Although it was not the easiest read, it was interesting. People
wanting to find out more about America and the people who created it but not wanting to read a boring

about the American Political Tradition, he did however include the main and maybe to some the not so

Dwight D Eisenhower Armed Force Analysis
In 1958, as the United States Government sought to reorganize its defense establishment, President
Dwight D. Eisenhower argued that separate ground, sea and air warfare is gone forever. If ever again
we should be involved in war, we will fight in all elements, with all services, as one single
concentrated effort. Eisenhower based his assessment on his experiences as Supreme Allied
Commander in Europe during World War II, but his insight has had a tremendous influence on the way
that the armed services fight. Today the armed services operate as a joint force, yet each service
provides important capabilities, some of which are unique to that service alone. Through law,
Congress has assigned certain roles to each service. These are the broad ... Show more content on

  • 2. Nina Simone Research Paper Nina Simone was one of the most unique, influential, and gifted singers of her generation. She was born on February 21, 1933 as Eunice Waymon, in Tryon, North Carolina. Her mother was a preacher and she started playing piano at an early age, around 3 or 4 at her mother s church, as she was playing piano at a local recital she caught the eye of an older white woman willing to give her lessons. Nina went on to studying classical piano for 5 years with the woman, learning the stylings of the classical greats such as Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, and Brahms. As a child she felt so isolated, spending up to 7 hours a day practicing the piano, and growing up in the south in the segregation era, she felt as she could not fit in neither with the white or black community, even when surrounded by other children all they wanted to ... After 1 ½ years the money ran out, so she sought out to apply for a musical scholarship, once again facing racism, not only did she do quite well in her audition, but she had mastered many classical songs, yet still was not accepted due to the color of her skin. Out of options, she managed to find a job playing the piano at a crummy old bar in Atlantic City, where one day her boss mentioned that if she wanted to keep her job she had to sing, thus Nina Simone is born. Not wanting to disappoint her mother with the thought that she was playing the devils music she created her stage name which she is now famously known as. Nina emerged on the professional stage in 1960 at a jazz festival, and quickly gained recognition with her baritone voice, not only was her voice so unique that it grasped anyone s attention, but the way she cultivated the new sound of jazz was amazing. Nina had a way with music, mixing classical piano sounds with jazz, and folk music, she had created her own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Secession Dbq Essay During the 1850s, the political climate in America was one of tension, turmoil, and division. Although there was great opposition for the scandalous Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854, the bill passed and resulted in the creation of the Republican party. The creation of a new political party portrayed a division among specific regional states within America. Ultimately, disagreement with the Union brought forth the topic of secession. In 1861, Texas Governor Sam Houston faced a difficult decision: to favor or oppose the secession of Texas. Union Sam Houston: The idea of secession could be an act of defiance, rather than defense. Inherently, our rights are not being stripped from us. Under the constitution, our rights as individuals and of the state ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Union wishes to suppress and maybe even outlaw slavery, while we aim to expand slavery. The Union supported a free Kansas while we proposed for the state to decide whether they would allow slavery. If we stay in the Union, the desire to abolish slavery may be forced upon us. Slavery is the backbone of our economy and we must preserve it. Union Sam Houston: On the other hand, it might just be better to stay together. We are legitimized as a Union and are recognized by foreign affairs. This impacts our trade which promotes a stabilized economy and nation. We are stronger together and differences can be worked on through compromise. Secession Sam Houston: Compromise may be out of the picture because we have experienced wrongdoings by the Union. For instance, the Union s violation of returning our fugitive slaves under the Fugitive Slave Law is unacceptable. Additionally, it would be more ideal to have the ability of setting our own tariffs and slave policy. The idea of compromise is naive and may continue leading to the suppression of Southern desires. Union Sam Houston: Maybe we are just not willing to sacrifice our own interests for such compromise. If we voice our interest to work together, we could avoid violence. Essentially, persisting with secession could lead to a civil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Analysis of Mark Drolsbough´s Deaf Again In the autobiography Deaf Again, Mark Drolsbaugh writes about his life being born hearing, growing up hard of hearing, to eventually becoming deaf. By writing this book, he helps many people view from his perspective on what it is like for someone to struggle trying to fit in the hearing society. Through his early years, his eyes were closed to the deaf world, being only taught how to live in a hearing world. Not only does the book cover his personal involvement, but it covers some important moments in deaf history. It really is eye opening because instead of just learning about deaf culture and deaf history, someone who lived through it is actually explaining their experiences. The story takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 38). It was here that his struggles became noticeable. Until ninth grade, he had just been just passing by with the help of some friends who would further explain the lesson. Once he was finally a freshman, he was given his first interpreter. A whole new world of learning was opened to him, keeping him up to speed in classes while also keeping him fully involved. The interpreters given assisted him through high school, and also helped him accomplish being the first deaf student to graduate from GFS. A major turning point in the authors life was when he attended Gallaudet University. At Gallaudet, he was surrounded by deaf peers and signing professors. To him, this was unbelievable. He was no longer behind from interpreters relaying information after it had already been said. Mark expresses this emotional state by saying he is no longer living in a fishbowl anymore (pg. 111). At one point earlier in the book, Mark compares himself to someone born underwater having to live in a glass bubble; someone who is unfortunately an outcast from the rest. But with the help of special scuba diving gear, you had the ability to interact and swim with the other fish. Although the scuba gear was accommodating in many ways, it was heavy and uncomfortable, and as much as it helped you interact with the fish, you never were able to swim like them (Pg. 44). Comparing Tobymac And Blu Collar Worker Chase Sanchez English 101 Instructor Fields 29 October 2014 So(ul) Many Decisions Whether a dusty, old pawn shop or classic record store in downtown Los Angeles, both TobyMac and Blu make or notice choices constantly being made. These choices include both physical exchanges and decision making. TobyMac s deep implication in his music video Lose My Soul shines a light on Blu s slightly different motive and thoughts in Blu Collar Worker . These motives are based on the notion that the soul is ultimately greater in value than any form of currency. Most people tend to make materialistic decisions to satisfy their temporary needs. We can see the first to enter is a young man with a hoodie on, who immediately heads to grab a laptop, scopes the shop, and leaves. Following this, a group of three men also enter with dark hoodies on, and give us the impression of another problem rising. The three communicate briefly, and one decides to purchase a handgun. They all exit, and the one with the gun walks back in. He heads straight for the cashier to draw his gun, but only to set it down to return to the shop. The situation is very inexplicit, as we are unsure about what exactly both the man with the laptop and gun did after leaving. We can only speculate, but it is clear that the man with the gun had a change of heart and chose to keep his soul. During this moment, we hear ...forgive us when we get consumed by the things of the world. The man was consumed by his neediness of those material things briefly. While TobyMac s message is conveyed using materialism and objects, Blu s message is expressed using materialism and people, specifically women. With all of the issues he has gone through with girls and money, Blu speaks ...Now he s meaner than meaner, was sweet, now he keeps his heart next to his nina. In this quote, Blu speaks in third person and explains he was once unselfish, but the females only care about money, forcing him to do the same. He now guards his heart as if a nina (nine millimeter) is next to it. His thoughts in this context essentially convey a repercussion of his avaricious choices. In both texts, someone has the opportunity to make the recurring decision, but both go down a different path. The man in Lose My Soul decides he does not want to live a life without a soul, and Blu chooses the path of his rapping passion and money, regardless of the loss or damage to his ... The book, Tao Te Ching has been said to been written by a Laozi an old master and has been said that the true author (or authors ) name has been lost. In the chapters between the book it tells how to live a life of integrity and of greatness per say. It also has contradictions or paradoxes which allows us to see the both perspectives of each side. It shows us that there are always two sides to everything. Tao Te Ching ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was the little things that he did that made my opinion change on him. You can t judge others on their appearance because there might be beauty inside of them or ugliness inside of them either one. The other contradiction in the Tao Te Ching was good and evil . This concept can kind of connect back to the ugliness and beauty in the ugliness kind of being evil and beauty being good. Of course, as it has already been expressed before by the author of this book, there are two sides to everything. When things are good, they are good of course but there is always something that is going to change that. The same thing happens when things are bad, they are bad but then it has to change to good at some point. What I thought of when I saw good and evil was the tree of knowledge of good and evil from the Bible. In the Bible, near the beginning of the book Genesis 2:9 it says that there are two trees, the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil . When Adam and Eve sinned and ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, that s when the concept of good and evil became true. Restorative Justice Model And Domestic Violence Introduction Beginning in the late 1960 s there began a shift in societal values from punishment of criminal behavior towards addressing the needs of the victims of crime. The questions being asked shifted from what law was broken to who was hurt. (Calhoun, 2013) It can be said that even today there still appears some controversy over the effectiveness and place of restorative justice however it has begun to infiltrate legislation. In Kansas K.S.A. 21 5414 (Domestic Battery) recently passed the requirement that all domestic violence offenders are required to undergo assessment and treatment from a certified batterers intervention program; a form of restorative justice. With this in mind the focus of subsequent discussion will be around defining terminology in restorative justice and domestic violence, effectiveness and implications, use in social work case management, and potential improvements to be made. Description of Restorative Justice Model and Domestic Violence Offenders One of the major roots founded in the core of restorative justice is the connection, no matter how damaging, that links a victim to their offender. There is forever a connection developed between the victim and offender despite the lack of a previous knowledge of each other. • 12. Figurative Language In Frankenstein In Frankenstein, Shelley uses a variety of figurative language that contribute to the novel s depressing atmosphere. Figurative language, such as allusions, personifications, and similes, establishes a relationship between two literally contrasting subjects. It prompts readers to more closely analyze the subjects for underlying similarities. It can also add to depth to the piece and enhance the overall novel by making abstract concepts more digestible. During the monster s narration, the author utilizes a series of biblical allusions to express the monster s anguish and his relationship with Victor. While the monster identifies with Satan, he also points out, Satan had his companions, fellow devils, to admire and encourage him; but I am solitary and abhorred (Shelley 93). Satan is usually viewed as a miserable creature, because he was exiled from heaven and can no longer live in God s glory. However, the monster reveals that even Satan is more fortunate than him, because at least, Satan is not completely isolated in Hell. The allusion emphasizes the extent of the monster s loneliness. Additionally, the monster reveals, Many times, I consider Satan as the fitter emblem of my condition... (Shelley 93). Shelley compares the monster to the biblical figure, Satan, who embodies evil. She emphasizes the monster s miserable existence, because similar to Satan, his existence has only brought tragedy and evil upon the world. Overall, her comparison to Satan induces readers to ... An urban legend is a story that has been passed down through generations with the intention of being informative whether it causes fear or joy. The only problem with urban legends is the fact that they are so hard to be proven true. Sometimes they have actual events attached with them but are obviously false; people try to attach relevant topics to legends to make them more believable. Some examples of these are the tale of the crazed Hook man or death by tanning bed. Each was related to some kind of event that was popular but it made it more believable. The legend that has caught my eye is the tale of the Hook man because it causes fear and creates an atmosphere that is similar to a foggy night: thick and visibility is limited. The legend adds a sense of fear and anxiety, which will discussed in the latter part of the paper. The main focus is to show what causes these two emotions and how they relate to the myth. The Hook man legend is about when a couple at the local Lover s Lane hears on the radio about an escaped mental patient. This patient has been said to be headed in the direction of their location and one hand has been replaced with a meat hook. The result: the Badgers had an average computer ranking of 7.71 despite ranking fourth in both polls. 7.71 is the average of where the team is in the rankings among the top twenty five teams in the nation according to the seven computers. The Associated Press polls are organized by a number of different newspapers, magazines, and media. While the NCAA football coaches put together the Coaches poll. This is probably the most critical element of the four because it has only two subsets (the media and coaches polls) to be averaged (Edwards). According to Matthew Sag, The essence of trolling is that the plaintiff is more focused on the business of litigation than on selling a product or service or licensing their IP to third parties to sell a product or a service ( Copyright Trolling, An Empirical Study page 4). Copyright trolls seek to acquire their income from suing others on copyright violations, rather than continually creating new works and using copyright to protect them. Copyright, whether one agrees with the concept or not, was not designed for this purpose. People should not be allowed to make a business off of suing others. This is not only unjust, but wastes the court s time with actual crimes. The United States must reform its current laws to prevent this type of behavior from happening. According to Parker Higgins, Like email spammers, copyright trolls depend on the ability to cheaply cast a very wide net, sending out hundreds or thousands of accusations at once and getting settlement payments back from some percentage ( Copyright trolls suffer big loss par. 3). Many trolls do not target specific groups or people; rather, they spread it in such a way that any company or organization can accidentally misuse it. Although we do not realize this, but by setting that mark it is giving the slackers something to aim for even though they never seem to compete for anything. This means that by having an environment that is willing to push even the slackers in school shows that they to can have something to compete for in the future. The environment of students plays an important role in helping students compete to become better. We tend to see better scores from students in private schools rather than students in public schools, this is because students are pushed harder in private schools and are competing to be the best because they know that if they start to fall behind they will be left in the dust. These students become the slackers. Problems start to form when the parents of the slackers start to shelter them and say that competing is not that important. You must recognize the dichotomy of the Same (yourself) and the Other (the other person). You must recognize that the Other infinitely transcends your own categories. We see the Other by looking into their face, we communicate with the Other by using language, and by doing this, we can prevent going to war with the Other. Or we might say that they re an INFJ according to the Myer Briggs Personality Indicator, or a 4 according to the Enneagram test, and so on. However, these tools are ultimately insufficient, since they limit the infinity of the Other through established categories. We use language in order to traverse the infinite distance between the Same and the Other. This distance is untraversable, and at the same time traversed (62). Truth arises when a person recognizes the Other as such, where a being separated from the other is no engulfed in him, but speaks to him (62). In every moment, we are ready to go to war with another person. We do this when hunger and fear make us think that it is worth it to hold ourselves over the other person, for hunger and fear can prevail over every human resistance and every freedom (35). However, we always have the freedom to resist hunger and fear, however tempted we may be, as freedom consists in knowing that freedom is in peril (35). It is imperative to resist the urge to treat the other as merely an object, and that we perpetually postpone this urge (35). It is important to note that Buddhism does not distinguish mental processes from other senses. Just as seeing takes a visual object, the mind takes a mental object (1).
