• Input Devices
The devices which are used to give data and instructions to
the computer are called Input Devices. Various types of input
devices can be used with the computer depending upon the
type of data you want to enter in the computer, e.g.,
keyboard, mouse, joystick, light pen, etc.

• Keyboard
• Keyboard is the most common and very popular input device
which helps to input data to the computer. The layout of the
keyboard is like that of traditional typewriter, although there
are some additional keys provided for performing additional
functions.
• Keyboards are of two sizes 84 keys or 101/102 keys, but now
keyboards with 104 keys or 108 keys are also available for
Windows and Internet.
• Types of keyboard:
• Standard keyboard
• Multimedia keyboard

• Mouse
Mouse is another input device which is commonly found
connected with the computers. It is basically a pointing device
which works on the principle of Point and Click. When the
mouse is moved on the mouse pad, a light beam underneath
reflect to give motion to the pointer on the screen.
BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT
COLLEGE
• The mouse is used in windows based programs, where the
user can run the commands by pointing the objects with the
help of pointer and clicking the buttons on the mouse.
• Most of the latest mouses, these days, include a wheel in the
middle of two buttons that help us to scroll through
documents more easily. we use our forefinger to move the
wheel to scroll up or down in a document. Optical mouse uses
red light to track the movement of mouse for moving the
pointer on the computer screen. This type of mouse is more
accurate and reliable than the traditional mouse.
• Nowadays cordless mouse is very popular. it dose not have
wires. it either uses Bluetooth technology to sends the data
through the air to a receiver, usually plugged in USB port of
the computer.

Joystick and Game-pad
Joystick and game-pad are also input devices which are also
input devices which are used to control the movement of object
on the screen. Just like mouse, these are also pointing devices.
Mostly they are used for playing games on the computer.
The joystick has a vertical stick with a track ball at its bottom.
While playing the games on the computer, the user needs to
move the objects quickly on the screen. With the movement of
this vertical stick the objects can be moved in all the directions
easily.
•A game-pad is a type of game controller held in two hands,
where the fingers (especially thumbs)are used to provide input
by pressing buttons on it. It is also known as Control Pad.

• Character Printer
Character printer prints one character at a time; it prints at
the speed of around 30 to 600 characters per second.
Dot Matrix printer is an example of a character printer.
• These are further divided into two types:
• Dot Matrix Printer(DMP)
• Daisy Wheel
• Dot Matrix Printer
• In the market, one of the most popular printers is Dot Matrix
Printer. These printers are popular because of their ease of
printing and economical price. Each character printed is in the
form of pattern of dots and head consists of a Matrix of Pins
of size (5*7, 7*9, 9*7 or 9*9) which come out to form a
character which is why it is called Dot Matrix Printer.
BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT
COLLEGE
• Advantages
• Inexpensive
• Widely Used
• Other language characters can be printed
• Disadvantages
• Slow Speed
• Poor Quality
BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT
COLLEGE
• Daisy Wheel
• Head is lying on a wheel and pins corresponding to characters are
like petals of Daisy (flower) which is why it is called Daisy Wheel
Printer. These printers are generally used for word-processing in
offices that require a few letters to be sent here and there with very
nice quality.
• Advantages
• More reliable than DMP
• Better quality
• Fonts of character can be easily changed
• Disadvantages
• Slower than DMP
• Noisy
• More expensive than DMP

• These are of two types −
• Drum Printer
• Chain Printer
BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT
COLLEGE
• Drum Printer
• This printer is like a drum in shape hence it is called drum printer.
The surface of the drum is divided into a number of tracks. Total
tracks are equal to the size of the paper, i.e. for a paper width of
132 characters, drum will have 132 tracks. A character set is
embossed on the track. Different character sets available in the
market are 48 character set, 64 and 96 characters set. One rotation
of drum prints one line. Drum printers are fast in speed and can
print 300 to 2000 lines per minute.
• Advantages
• Very high speed
• Disadvantages
• Very expensive
• Characters fonts cannot be changed
BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT

• Chain Printer
• In this printer, a chain of character sets is used, hence it is
called Chain Printer. A standard character set may have 48,
64, or 96 characters.
• Advantages
• Character fonts can easily be changed.
• Different languages can be used with the same printer.
• Disadvantages
• Noisy
BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT
COLLEGE
• Non-impact Printers
• Non-impact printers print the characters without using the
ribbon. These printers print a complete page at a time, thus
they are also called as Page Printers.
• These printers are of two types −
• Laser Printers
• Inkjet Printers
• Characteristics of Non-impact Printers
• Faster than impact printers
• They are not noisy
• High quality
• Supports many fonts and different character size

PLOTTER:
BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT
COLLEGE
PLOTTER A plotter is a computer printing device for printing vector graphics.
 In the past, plotters were widely used in applications such as
computer-aided designs, though they have generally been replaced
with wide-format conventional printers.
 And it is now common place to refer to such wide-format printers as
"plotters”.
 It is a special output device used to produce hardcopies of graphs
and designs on the paper.
 A plotter is typically used to print large-format graphs or maps such
as construction maps or engineering drawings.
Plotters are classified into following types:
• Drum Plotter
• Flatbed Plotter
• Inkjet Plotter
BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT
COLLEGE
• Drum Plotter
• A drum plotter is a pen plotter that wraps the paper around a
drum with a pin feed attachment. The drum then rotates the
paper as pens move across it and draw the image. It was the
first output device used to print graphics and large
engineering drawings. There are two types of drum plotters,
external and internal. With an external drum plotter, the
paper is wrapped around its external surface, while the
internal drum plotter uses a sheet of paper wrapped around
its internal surface.
BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT
COLLEGE
• Flat-Bed Plotter
• A flat-bed plotter is a mechanical drafting device used with
many CAD programs for designers. The paper remains
stationary on a flat surface while a pen moves across it
horizontally and vertically. This plotter may use several
different pen colors to create the graphics. The size of the
graphic is limited to the size of the flat-bed plotter's surface.
BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT
COLLEGE
• Inkjet Plotter
• The inkjet plotter creates an image by spraying small droplets
of ink on to paper. A popular choice for advertising agencies
and graphic designers, inkjet plotters are used generally for
large outputs, such as banners and billboards and large signs
often seen along roadsides. They are available in thermal or
piezoelectric models. Thermal inkjet plotters use heat to apply
droplets of ink, while piezoelectric plotters use charged
crystals to apply the ink. Inkjet plotters typically produce
better quality graphics than other plotter types.
BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT
COLLEGE
• Cutting Plotter
• The cutting plotter is a large scale cutting device that produces
ready-cut mylar or vinyl lettering and graphics. Automated
plotter knives cut into a sheet of the material lying on the
plotter's flat surface area, carving out the design stored in the
attached computer. Used for sign making, billboard
advertising and vehicle graphics, the devices offer far greater
speed and precision than can be achieved with the traditional
method of creating sign lettering and logos by hand.

These printers are generally used for word-processing in offices that require a few letters to be sent here and there with very nice quality. • Advantages • More reliable than DMP • Better quality • Fonts of character can be easily changed • Disadvantages • Slower than DMP • Noisy • More expensive than DMP BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT COLLEGE
  • 69. • Line Printer This is high speed printer that prints one line at a time. It is used when large quantity of output is required as it produces the quick output. Examples of a Line printer are Drum printer and the Chain printer. The noise level of these printers is high and speed ranges from 200 to 2000 LPM(Lines Per Minute). BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT COLLEGE
  • 70. • These are of two types − • Drum Printer • Chain Printer BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT COLLEGE
  • 71. • Drum Printer • This printer is like a drum in shape hence it is called drum printer. The surface of the drum is divided into a number of tracks. Total tracks are equal to the size of the paper, i.e. for a paper width of 132 characters, drum will have 132 tracks. A character set is embossed on the track. Different character sets available in the market are 48 character set, 64 and 96 characters set. One rotation of drum prints one line. Drum printers are fast in speed and can print 300 to 2000 lines per minute. • Advantages • Very high speed • Disadvantages • Very expensive • Characters fonts cannot be changed BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT COLLEGE
  • 72. • Chain Printer • In this printer, a chain of character sets is used, hence it is called Chain Printer. A standard character set may have 48, 64, or 96 characters. • Advantages • Character fonts can easily be changed. • Different languages can be used with the same printer. • Disadvantages • Noisy BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT COLLEGE
  • 73. • Non-impact Printers • Non-impact printers print the characters without using the ribbon. These printers print a complete page at a time, thus they are also called as Page Printers. • These printers are of two types − • Laser Printers • Inkjet Printers • Characteristics of Non-impact Printers • Faster than impact printers • They are not noisy • High quality • Supports many fonts and different character size BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT COLLEGE

  • 79. PLOTTER A plotter is a computer printing device for printing vector graphics.  In the past, plotters were widely used in applications such as computer-aided designs, though they have generally been replaced with wide-format conventional printers.  And it is now common place to refer to such wide-format printers as "plotters”.  It is a special output device used to produce hardcopies of graphs and designs on the paper.  A plotter is typically used to print large-format graphs or maps such as construction maps or engineering drawings. Plotters are classified into following types: • Drum Plotter • Flatbed Plotter • Inkjet Plotter BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT COLLEGE
  • 80. • Drum Plotter • A drum plotter is a pen plotter that wraps the paper around a drum with a pin feed attachment. The drum then rotates the paper as pens move across it and draw the image. It was the first output device used to print graphics and large engineering drawings. There are two types of drum plotters, external and internal. With an external drum plotter, the paper is wrapped around its external surface, while the internal drum plotter uses a sheet of paper wrapped around its internal surface. BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT COLLEGE
  • 81. • Flat-Bed Plotter • A flat-bed plotter is a mechanical drafting device used with many CAD programs for designers. The paper remains stationary on a flat surface while a pen moves across it horizontally and vertically. This plotter may use several different pen colors to create the graphics. The size of the graphic is limited to the size of the flat-bed plotter's surface. BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT COLLEGE
  • 82. • Inkjet Plotter • The inkjet plotter creates an image by spraying small droplets of ink on to paper. A popular choice for advertising agencies and graphic designers, inkjet plotters are used generally for large outputs, such as banners and billboards and large signs often seen along roadsides. They are available in thermal or piezoelectric models. Thermal inkjet plotters use heat to apply droplets of ink, while piezoelectric plotters use charged crystals to apply the ink. Inkjet plotters typically produce better quality graphics than other plotter types. BYLECTURERSURAJPANDEYCCT COLLEGE
  • 83. • Cutting Plotter • The cutting plotter is a large scale cutting device that produces ready-cut mylar or vinyl lettering and graphics. Automated plotter knives cut into a sheet of the material lying on the plotter's flat surface area, carving out the design stored in the attached computer. Used for sign making, billboard advertising and vehicle graphics, the devices offer far greater speed and precision than can be achieved with the traditional method of creating sign lettering and logos by hand.
