Course developed by Dr. Joan E. Hughes at The University of Texas at Austin The purpose of this class is to introduce you to the theories, assumptions, and practices underlying the use of qualitative research in education. In the tradition of survey courses, this class examines the broad history, concepts, and themes that distinguish multiple methods of qualitative research, specifically as they relate to education research. Students will study, practice, and reflect on different qualitative research methodologies and consider the components and challenges faced when engaging in qualitative research methods. Each student will design and conduct his/her own qualitative study. Issues related to data collection, negotiating access to the field, ethics, and representation will be of particular importance. While it is not assumed that you will gain a comprehensive, rich understanding of any one particular qualitative research tradition over the trajectory of the course, it is expected that upon completion you will acquire the foundational knowledge and experience to begin evaluating, selecting, and defending appropriate qualitative methods for use in your own future research projects. Goals: 1. Understand historical background and fundamental tenets of qualitative research. 2. Understand ethical issues within qualitative research. 3. Develop a researchable question. 4. Identify the limits and affordances of qualitative research designs. 5. Develop a beginning awareness of qualitative inquiry approaches, including ethnography, case studies, narrative, postmodern, critical, and basic interpretive. 6. Engage in qualitative research activities, including: field observations, interview, coding, analysis, and report writing.

The name and a brief description of the emergent technology selected A thesis statement (Please note that a thesis sentence presents the central idea of the paper. It must always be a complete, grammatical sentence, it must be specific and brief, and it must express the point of view you are taking on the subject. This thesis statement will be included in the introduction of your final report.) Objectives This capstone course concludes with a research-based Course Project that starts during the first week of the session and continues throughout the duration of the course. It culminates with the submission of a formal, written report in Week 7. In addition to the final outcomes, students will also conduct a peer evaluation of another student’s project in order to provide feedback that enhances the work in a collaborative environment. For the project, each student will identify and explore an emerging technology. This will be a technology that may already exist but is drawing attention because of new applications, anticipated impacts, or potential controversies. Examples could include, but are in no way limited to, the following subjects. · Nanotechnology · Genetically modified organisms · Drones · Automatic cars · Remote or robotic surgery · Wireless electricity The student will address the historical, social, cultural, moral, and ethical issues presented by their selected technology. Guidelines The primary focus of this assignment is for the student to research and assess the issues associated with a specific emerging technology. It requires that students submit an APA-formatted, 10-page paper during Week 7 of the session. Students will also conduct a peer evaluation of another student’s work and must prepare a 5- to 10-page presentation communicating their thoughts on the work. Details on this assignment are discussed below, and detailed grading rubrics can be found on this LAS432 Course Project Details document . Apply: Information System Auditing Assignment Research an article in the University Library related to this week's objectives. (Information Technology Auditing) Write a 700- to 1,050-word summary of the article. Apply what you learned to your professional life. How could you use the information on your job? Format your paper consistent with APA standards. Notes: Any article is alright about the week’s objectives which is information system auditing. I am currently a fiscal assistant for a government agency. Let me know if you need anything else. Thank you. PS355 – Winter 2019 Civic Engagement Project Assignment The core of this assignment is for you to practice "engaging yourself and engaging your civic community." Your goal should be multi-layered - to bring change in one social issue that is of concern to you in your community, to develop your knowledge and skills related to civics, and to challenge yourself to reach outside of the classroom to learn and then bring your knowledge back to the classroom to share with your classmates. You will need to (1) choose and research one substantial social issue at Western Oregon University or in your surrounding community, (2) define a problem found within the issue, and (3) devise and implement a local solution to that problem. If the type of project you choose does not allow for implementation during this quarter, you must submit a detailed proposal of how your project would be implemented with additional time. You will present your project to the class (a) briefly in Week 4 to gain feedback (January 28th), and (b) the complete project at the end of the quarter (classes during Week 9 and 10 of the quarter, plus on final exam day if needed). In addition, you will need to turn in progress reports and hold brief meetings with me to discuss your efforts. You may work alone or in a group (if you work in a group, you will receive a group score). You will have a great deal of latitude in the project you choose. However, you will work closely with me in planning your actions, and determining what is sufficient progress based on the project and problem you choose. As you begin work on the project keep the following questions in mind: · What may prevent progress or help you succeed, and how can you plan for these challenges? · Who will you need to work with (who are the stakeholders and what are their interests)? · What will be most effective to change behavior? Grading Grades will be determined by the amount and quality of work you complete, not necessarily completing the project, as there is a time limitation of just one quarter. However, the average amount of time that should be spent on the project should be at least 40 hours (4 hours a week) as the assignment is 50% of the class grade. The 40 hours includes the time needed to write the Design, Project Reports, and Project Summary. In addition, you will be assessed on how well your project changes behavior. Therefore, you need to es.

You can investigate the impact of an event (e.g., Commonwealth Games, Schoolies), a new development (e.g., Queens Wharf Project), a type of transportation (e.g., air travel, cruise travel), a form of travel (e.g., volunteer tourism) or other issues pertinent to the industry (e.g. overtourism, climate change, sustainable tourism, wildlife tourism etc.). The project involves a review of industry reports, news articles and academic literature to identify the potential impacts of tourism, followed by selecting appropriate methods to investigate the impact. Your team will collect empirical data (interview or survey questionnaire) in Week 8, analyse the data and report the results. Based on the project outcomes, recommendations will be provided to manage the impact and promote sustainable tourism development. This assessment is evaluated based on FOUR components: 1. Group research proposal (5%) – Due in Week 6, 3 Sep Friday, 16:00 2. Group written report (30%) – Due in Week 12, 15 Oct Friday, 16:00 3. Peer evaluation survey (5%) – Due in Week 13, 18 Oct Monday, 16:00 4. Individual reflection on group communication (5%) – Due in Week 14, 25 Oct Monday, 16:00 GROUP RESEARCH PROPOSAL You are required to complete a brief research proposal in Week 6. The proposal provides an opportunity for your team to receive early and formative feedback on your project and research instruments (questionnaire/interview guide). The proposal is also a requirement by Griffith University Research Ethics Office to ensure that your project falls within the scope of the course ethical clearance. The proposal is graded and compulsory. Proposal Submission The proposal must be submitted electronically using SafeAssign submission point. Only one submission is required for each group. E-cover sheet is not required for the proposal. 2 GROUP WRITTEN REPORT The report should include the following headings: 1. Introduction: This section provides background information relevant to the project, explains the research objectives, establishes the importance of the project, and provides a brief outline of the report. You are encouraged to refer to industry reports, statistics, new articles and online resources to build the case for your project. 2. Literature Review: For this section, you will need to find academic journal articles and write a review summarising what has been found in previous studies. A minimum of 5 academic references are expected in this section ...
