This document summarizes different types of electronic literature in the social sciences including electronic journals, databases, internet resources, and online public access catalogs. It provides examples and descriptions of each type. Electronic literature is useful for accessing social science information as it saves time, allows for quick access, and helps address the increasing amount of literature being produced.

3. Electronic literature
Electronic literature, otherwise known as Digital Literature,
is a literary genre consisting of works of literature that
originate within digital environments and require digital
computation to be read. In contrast to most e-books,
electronic literature is created specifically to be used via a
digital setting and thus cannot be printed as key elements
of the text require computation: for instance there may be
links, generative aspects, multimedia content, animation or
reader interaction in addition to the verbal text. Electronic
literature may also take the form of digitally mediated
performance writing.

4. Kinds of electronic literature
• Electronic Journals/books
• Electronic databases
• Internet Resources
• Online Public Access Catalogues (OPAC)

5. Electronic journal
Electronic journals, also known as ejournals, e-
journals, and electronic serials, are scholarly
journals or intellectual magazines that can be
accessed via electronic transmission. In practice, this
means that they are usually published on the Web.
They are a specialized form of electronic document.
They have the purpose of providing material for
academic research and study, and they are formatted
approximately like journal articles in traditional
printed journals. Many electronic journals are listed in
directories such as the Directory of Open Access
Journals, and the articles indexed in bibliographic
databases and search engines for the academic
discipline concerned.
5
6. Electronic database
An e-database is an organized collection of
information, of a particular subject or multi-
disciplinary subject areas.
The information of an e-database can be
searched and retrieved electronically.
Contents include journal articles, newspaper
articles, book reviews and conference
proceedings, etc.
6
7. E-databases
Usually updated on a daily, weekly, monthly
or quarterly basis.
Types of e-databases:
Full-text vs. Bibliographic
Full-text databases contain the whole
content of an article such as citation
information, text, illustrations, diagrams and
tables.
Bibliographic databases only contain citation
information of an article, such as author
name, journal title, publication date and
page numbers.
7
8. E-book
An e-book is the electronic version of a book
covering its full contents text, tables,
diagrams, illustrations, etc
An e-book collection is usually set up in an e-
database, which supports full-text searching
within and across titles, advanced search
and bookmark functions.
Users can view full text of e-books in HTML
or PDF format online.
8
9. Audio ebook
An online collection of audio books
Consists of more than 1,000 tracks of
spoken word on classic novels, plays,
poetry and non-fiction literature.
Texts on the literature are available on
screen along with the spoken
presentation.

10. OPAC
An online public access catalog often abbreviated
as OPAC or simply library catalog is an online
database of materials held by a library or group of
libraries. Users search a library catalog principally to
locate books and other material available at a library.
For example library of congress online catalog

23. Need of electronic literature
The number of books, journals, papers, and
conferences in the social sciences is
increasing with each passing year. The
explosion of information and resources is
increasing the burden on librarians and
information professionals who must assist a
wide range of users of the social science
literature. Electronic literature is providing
comfort to the users and professionals. The
electronic resources are very suitable for
saving the time and quick access to
information.
