Hazing Should Be Allowed In College
Hazing can be defined as the humiliation and dangerous activities that teenagers encounter when joining a fraternity or sorority in college. Over the
years, these rituals can be extremely threatening for college students; for instance being tied up for twenty–four hours or even playing intense drinking
games. When being in a frat house, teens get to experience living college to the fullest and having the opportunity to pledge for whichever fraternity
one would please on doing. All over the world, from different colleges, these teens have to go through this just to be a part of Greek Life. Is it worth
it? Well according to "The Fraternity Advisor" it states, "There are over 9 million Greek members nationally." Many people take fraternity and Greek
Life very serious today.Society has viewed hazing very unpredictable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first ever fraternity house was discovered by five students on December 5th, 1776 at the college of William and Mary. The name of the
fraternity was then associated as Phi Beta Kappa which means "love of learning is the guide of life". If a person in college is looking to join a
fraternity, the person would go to all of the fraternities houses and meet all the people in that specific fraternity and get to know one another to see if
he fits in well. This step of the fraternity process is called rush season. Furthermore, people who belong to a fraternity are known as brothers. These
brothers are the ones who have the massive parties in college. Thus, if the brothers decide that if they see a person who wants to join or has the
potential, that person will begin to pledge for that fraternity. When pledging for that specific brotherhood, there are multiple stages that teens have to go
through and sometimes could take weeks or even months. As the teen begins to pledge, the person has to show loyalty and

An Inside Look at Hazing
As prevalent as hazing is among male college athletes, many people are surprised by the statistics surroundings this controversial topic. For instance in
1989–1999, of a survey of over 350,000 athletes, 250,000 plus said they had experienced hazing of some sort during their time with their associated
team. One in five of these students experienced potentially illegal hazing including binge drinking, sexual acts, and destruction and vandalizing of
property. Half of these men were involved in drinking contests or other alcohol related incidents, and only one in five experienced positive initiation
practices such as team trips or team building exercises. When the geography of college campuses was evaluated, it was found that western and eastern
schools participated heavily in alcohol related initiations, whereas southern and Midwestern campuses had a larger prevalence of dangerous or
potentially illegal rituals (not to say binge drinking isn't dangerous). Clearly hazing amongst athletics is not just isolated incidents of serious outcomes
that happen to make the news due to their outrageous natures, but is a rampant practice that affects over half of every male athlete in college. Hazing,
as defined by Aldo Cimino (2011) actually makes it different than a ritual or initiation although the words are commonly interchanged. Hazing is any
act that makes a newcomer have to do something whose cost is not relevant to the normal social order of the group. The example Cimino gives is

What Are Hazing and Stockholm Syndrome?
Literature Review Hazing has been a long time issue that dates back to Plato and Martin Luther. There are many forms to the act, and all have been
recognized. However, what about the effects that hazing has mentally on these young adults? The question I would like to pose is: How do the effects
of hazing compare to Stockholm syndrome? Let us first describe what both hazing and Stockholm syndrome is so that the effects can be better
understood. Hazing is the imposition of strenuous, often humiliating, tasks as part of a program of rigorous physical training and initiation or forcing
someone to do humiliating and sometimes dangerous initiation rituals, especially as imposed on college students seeking membership to a fraternity or

The acts of hazing that I have heard and read about are absolutely appalling. They range from breast ranking, circling "problem areas" on bodies,
forcing them to strip down and provocatively dance in front of fraternity men, or making them chose between using hard drugs or using a sex toy in
front of their potential new sisters. In no way does it make sense that young women can love their hazers so much, yet it happens again and again every
year. A shocking statistic found in Shelly Campo, Gretchen Poulos, and John Sipple's study entitled: "Prevalence and Profiling: Hazing Among College
Students and Points of Intervention" was that becoming Greek at the particular university put one at roughly a 40% chance at being hazed and that one
is about 23% likely to then becoming a hazer. In this study, they also found that more Greek students indicated hazing has "fun" than their non–Greek
fellow students. In this study, they sent an on–line survey to two thousand undergraduate students, where 736 students completed it to receive their
final findings. In this study, they looked at positive team building activities verses negative ones. Having their participants do an on–line survey was
the best method to get results. However, there was no reward for completing the survey and there were no reminder emails asking them to take the
survey. This could have helped them to have a better turn out and receive a better understanding of the sample population of the

Greek Hazing Research Paper
In February of this year, a 19–year–old brother at the fraternity's Cornell University chapter died following a ritual in which he was kidnapped by
several pledges and given alcohol each time he incorrectly answered a question about the fraternity. During this process, he was blindfolded and his
hands and feet were tied. His blood–alcohol level was four–times the legal driving limit in New York. In the article "Safe and Sound" there was another
incident 'Florida A&M University (FAMU), which was under fire a few years ago for an incident in which a member of the school's marching band was
killed during hazing.' Also in the other article 'High School, Where Hazing is Amazing' it says that 10 students had felony charges for hazing
freshman on the basketball and baseball teams. Hazing is a huge problem it is basically strenuous, humiliating, task of a program/group of beyond
hard physical training and initiation. This problem needs to be solved because there has been many of deaths and sever injuries from this type of

Hazing On College Campuses
Hazing is known as action that usually takes place when one wishes to join an organization, club or sports team. Generally, hazing is found to take
place on most college campuses. Research has shown that 2 in 5 students say that they are aware of hazing taking place on their college campus. It's
not common for hazing to happen during Middle or High School years. Unfortunately, there have been over 250,000 students that have experienced
some form of hazing. On a rare occasion do students, coaches, or advisors admit to having any knowledge of hazing activities. Hazing is usually
conducted by someone that likes to feel that they are in control and may even be considered a bully. This action is somewhat one that causes an

Harassment hazing can cause stress to an upcoming member, in other words forcing them to join.Violent hazing is causing physical or emotional
harm to and individual. Any type of hazing is unacceptable. In order to join, you should not be made to feel forced to do things that you really
don't want to. Hazing has truly scared people away from wanting to join organizations. Sometimes the mental and physical anguish is too much for
an individual to endure. There are a lot of things that you can do to prevent hazing, like learn more about it, build more friendships with people,
because if you are going join a group, you have to be friendly, be a nice person, have a good attitude about things, and be able to work well with
others. Hazing is very illegal, it's another sign of abuse that shouldn't be happening especially, when it can result in someone being killed. When
joining an organization or group, you should feel welcome and happy to be apart of something great and not scared to do it. Hazing can include
several different actions. Such actions consist of: paddling, beating, burning, and even making them stay awake for days at a

Anti-Greek Organizations: The Role Of Hazing In The Media
Hazing: The practice of rituals and other activities involving harassment, abuse or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group. Hazing
is seen in many different types of social groups, including gangs, sports teams, schools, military units, and fraternities/ sororities. Hazing has been
around throughout history and is used as a tool to make new members or pledges bond and create a trust between one another. The media is the main
source when it comes to catching organizations like fraternities and sororities engaging in hazing or hazing–like activities. Today everything is posted
on the Internet so it is common for the media to find evidence to support their anti–Greek idea. Hazing is a serious problem and there are alternatives ...

The Controversial Role Of Hazing In The Present Day
Hazing is a common ritual found in both academic and employment settings. Although hazing was instituted a few centuries ago, its prominence can
still be seen in modern day society. For that reason, this paper will examine three areas that includes the background of hazing, the viewpoint
comparison on hazing through two peer–reviewed articles, and why hazing is still controversial in the present day.
Background of Hazing
According to Parks, Jones, Ray, Hughey, and Cox (2015), "hazing as part of a rite of passage process dates back to the beginning of mankind" with
"the first documented instances of organized hazing" coming "from ancient Greece, where prospective soldiers" demonstrated "their loyalty" through
"painful and uncomfortable experiences" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The captain can remind teammates of the hazing prevention workshop and suggest a progressive team dinner where each senior member of the team
provides a food course. (Heibert & Klatt, 2001, p. 170–2; p. 17)
Keep in mind that Waldron's (2012) suggestions for reducing hazing may have little influence due to "the countervailing force of peer pressure"
(Edelman, 2005, p. 328). Therefore, it is highly unlikely that this contradictory approach will succeed using a short–range tactic to replace a long–range
strategy (Fallacies, 2006, More..., para. 1–42; Heibert & Klatt, 2001, p. 170–2). Hence, further discussions are needed to determine which author(s)
presented the stronger argument.
Taking all this into account, Waldron (2012) has presented a stronger argument than Josefowitz and Gadon (1989). The reason for this is due to
Waldron (2012) maintaining a neutral position, while presenting strong scientific evidence on the subject of hazing. Also, the statistics presented by
Waldron (2012) did not have any "fallacies" when compared to that of Josefowitz and Gadon (1989) (Fallacies, 2006, More..., para. 1–42). Based upon
these differences and how society has changed its cultural stance on hazing, Waldron (2012) has clearly given the better argument and solution for
stopping hazing. Hence, a further discussion is needed on why hazing remains a controversial

for hazing prevention on the campus as far as procedures and protocol. (Who may possibly join this coalition?) The partnership will also work to
complete a comprehensive assessment of campus culture and hazing climate. This will be done through a combination of surveys, focus groups, and
interviews with stakeholders on campus (source). It will be important to include key stakeholders from the case like greek life students, the greek life
office, students at large and administrators working at Sunnydale University. Using the data from the assessment StopHazing will be able to provide a
set of recommendations for Sunnydale to consider to move hazing prevention forward on their campus. During the second year of the consortium

Delta has been able to focus on more important needs and issues at the time and have reunited sorors with the organization, gaining more help and

The other change event relating to hazing, has been another successful proposal as well. Many chapters within Delta Sigma Theta have either been
known for or caught with hazing physically and/or emotionally in the past. According to one previous story, "On November 20th 2010, the day
before their official initiation, due to lack of sleep the driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into a tree. Two girls were injured and two girls
lost their lives in the tragic accident". Using this change intervention, Delta has been able to not only own up to past horrendous misshapes, but to
promote non–hazing as it is a very serious matter. More and more trainings, informationals', sessions, and even videos and documents have been
produced and used for current members and new seeking candidates to stress the importance of non–tolerance of any type of behavior. Mistakes have
been made, including the incident that occurred in 2010. As we know that not every chapter may have been sought or captured with hazing, a

Hazing Is Wrong
For several people, hazing is seen as a disgusting ritual that has been passed down from generation to generation. Others who are supportive of these
hazing rituals are able to see the positive side of hazing, but then there are the people who can look at it from both ways and come to a conclusion
based off of the evidence proclaimed by each side. Now someone may ask, well what is hazing? "Hazing has been defined [by N.C. Hoover] as "any
activity expected of someone joining a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers, regardless of the person's willingness to participate"

Hazing often involves activities such as drinking games, sexual harassment, physical and emotional abuse, and forms of public shaming (OI). One
hazing incident in Chicago ended with some girls in a hospital after a game of touch football turned upside down almost instantly. "Basically it started

Girls were unconscious," (Stand up against hazing: hazing is a socially sanctioned form of bully you can help cycle, 1). Another incident involved a

this kind of hazing was not allowed because of the potentially deadly condition of unusual kidney injury according to the National Kidney Foundation's

College Hazing In College
College Hazing
Since 2005, there have been more than 60 hazing related deaths and over 20,000 hazing related injuries (College). Hazing is a ritual in which
harassment, abuse, forceful consumption of alcohol and drugs, and torture are used to initiate a person into a group ("Learners Dictionary"). Hazing is a
standard expectation especially when joining a college fraternity or sorority. One's initiation usually subjects him/her to physical abuse; even though,
that physical abuse is a felony in most states. Although some blame the pledgees for voluntarily putting themselves at risk for detrimental harm,
schools' administrations need to issue stricter consequences such as suspension and potential expulsion for hazing in order to stop abuse and save lives.
Research and empirical evidence indicates an influx of hazing on college campuses which is simply unacceptable. Research conducted by Cornell
University in 2003 reported that only 17% of college students across the country experienced hazing ("Cornell Research"). The 17% who said to
have been hazed also stated that it was not worth it and the abuse had everlasting mental effects; moreover, those same people said that hazing must
come to an end and that it is a sad excuse to harm others. On a darker note, research conducted by University of Maine in 2008 recorded troubling
statistics. Their research had shown 55% of students claiming to have been hazed ("Maine Research on Hazing"). Although there is the factor of

The Pros And Cons Of Hazing
Hazing by definition is "an initiation process involving harassment."(Miriam Webster Dictionary online) In recent times hazing has been corrupted and
left people dead. At least 4 people have been killed this year in hazing incidents. In a Bloomsburg newsletter it stated, " More than 60 students have
died in hazing since 2005." Hazing is dangerous to students now. Hazing humiliates, imprisons, and kills people.
Some say hazing builds teams. They say "Initiations require mutual support and bonding among members."(Student life 2011) They need consent on
both sides and people willingly do this. "Those more seniors know that the initiates wish to join with such intensity that they are willing to let
themselves get humiliated."(Student life 2011) Also not all hazing is bad. They only report negative hazing incidents that leave people dead. We don't
know all the positive examples. Like my dad. He went through hazing to get into his fraternity. He didn't get beaten or forced to drink. But, he had to
learn things about his fraternity brothers. He got to know them and created friends for life.
Though, hazing kills people. Take Timothy Piazza for example. Timothy piazza was joining the fraternity Beta Theta Pi when it came time for hazing.
"Piazza's blood alcohol level content may have reached a high of .36% that night... Video surveillance shows that he first fell down a flight of stairs
around 11pm... multiple fraternity members saw him in distress. In some cases, they ignored

A.Quote from critic: "Hazing rituals that incorporate some form of physical or emotional abuse are not unique to campus Greek life. Many groups,
including athletic teams, military units and high school clubs, use some form of hazing to initiate new members."
I.Hazing is abuse, you are forcing others to slave over you and your needs without thinking of the risk you put that person through. For example:
I.According to the article, "At a Campus Scarred by Hazing, Cries for Help,"
"One student said she feared for her boyfriend's health and ability to do his schoolwork because he was coming home from fraternity pledging around

Through looking at the opinions of students I realized that people will do hazing only if it doesn't affect their body. But this doesn't make any sense
because hazing can be presented in many ways. Also the fact that you are lowering yourself for others in higher position of you, just to be accepted
by a club is a form of control, either if you go through physical abuse or etc.
III.Supporting Section #3
A.Quote from critic: "I went through hazing and I'm stronger because of it".
I.You are not stronger if you go through hazing actually you are very weak because you are doing things to benefit others just so you can get into a
club that doesn't even treat you right.
II.Having people call you all kinds of names and physically hurt you shows that you are very weak minded.
III.In order to prove you are strong is to stand up and not taking the hurt anymore because you care for your wellbeing.
IV.You have to look out for yourself because at the end of the day no one cares for you as much as yourself.
V.This improves my thesis because it explain how hazing makes you weak instead of stronger it messes up with your identity. It hurts the person you
are inside and when you become a part of the society and haze others you might tear them apart without realizing

(Laws). Have you ever wondered why they do not have hazing laws? No one truly knows why they do not have the laws. As some people think, hazing
is a great thing, and it puts people through a great experience to go through. Since hazing can endanger the physical safety of a person, and produces
mental, physical discomfort, and causes dismay, humiliation, and dehumanizes an individual, society needs to learn about hazing and stop it from
happening. We know that people consider it a tradition that has been going on for ages, but it's an appalling experience to go through. Everywhere
around the world hazing is happening and not one person can do a thing about it. The earliest recorded event of hazing occurred in eighteen
thirty–eight. The first recorded death happened in eighteen forty–eight. (Hank). So you can see why some may consider it a tradition. Many hazing
incidents do not just involve members of a certain group, but sometimes it can also include the coach or who is in charge of the group. Twenty–two
percent of coaches or advisors are involved in hazing towards the athlete or student. Many of the coaches and advisors even help perform the hazing

Possible solutions that may decrease, and eventually put a stop to hazing, include better education about fraternity hazing, stricter laws to prevent
hazing from occurring, and more intervention from college administrators. Through this can Fraternities be restored to their intended purpose:
providing moral and social support for college students.
The lack of a common definition of hazing often deters an institution from moving toward an enforceable policy prohibiting such conduct as hazing. An
institutional policy should be developed defining and prohibiting hazing that is sufficiently broad to prohibit behaviors and activities.
3. Hazing is a serious topic that most youths in today's generation face. Because it is a growing problem, the public, both young and old, should be
aware of what hazing actually is, be able to recognize it, and how to prevent it. There are many different types of hazing and different areas where
they have occurred. This research paper examines different areas in which hazing is found. In order to receive a sense of what people are
experiencing, different cases will be presented to help give the reader a little understanding of what has been happening everywhere. To begin, one
must realize that hazing is defined as ridiculing tasks a 'newcomer' is put through. These tasks could harm the person being initiated either physically or

Use the concepts from the list below and use them to craft an in–depth explanation of possible reasons that the fraternity members would conduct and
allow this abuse. For full credit, your explanation must apply the concepts, not simply define them.
Deindividuation– The college students are completely immerged in the hazing fraternity ritual and lost all sense of personal morals or character for the

Hazing And Sororitys
The article that I have selected is about hazing and how it is heavily associated with greek fraternity and sororitys across the U.S. Hazing is the act of
''any activity expected of someone that joins a group and has the potential to humiliates, degrades, abuses, comprise safety, or inflicts pain until its
victims''(Richardson, Wang, &Hill, 2012). Hazing as a form of initation into these fratertinities and sorriorites and the behavior is highly anticpitate
and welcomed as for many it is look at as a form of handed down tradition. Which brings us to the theory of reasoned action and it having much to do

The Dangers Of Hazing In College
Dangers of Hazing Hazing is defined as "any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or
endangers them, regardless of a person's willingness to participate" (Chaney). It is a ritual on many college campuses, especially in Greek life, forcing
the students to do acts like, binge drinking, humiliation, sexual acts, and more. It is a very dangerous act that could include traumatic injuries like
beating, drowning, and could even result in death on the student being hazed. Hazing is a growing problem here at The University of Alabama and at
other college campus's around the nation and there needs to be changes presented to cut out these dangerous practices. For this act to be stopped
students, administration, and even parents must take steps to eliminating hazing on campus. Currently hazing is illegal in 44 states, but these
dangerous practices continue on college campuses all over the country. Whenever the word hazing is mentioned people usually associate it with
Greek life, however hazing is also present among sports teams, marching bands, military groups, and even honor societies. In 2011 at Florida A&M,
drum major, Robert Champion Jr., died after being brutally beaten as a hazing ritual. Following his tragic death, a former Florida A&M band member,
Dante Martin, was sentenced to more than six years in prison for manslaughter and felony hazing. Hazing can be many different things, for example,
sexual acts;

Hazing: What Happened To Those Being Hazed?
Fraternity and sorority organizations have been established on the basis of brother/sisterhood and the well–being of the college and community. But
over the past couple of decades frats and sororities have dimmed the lights that shine on their positive activity and have intensified the speculation of
the negative activities that go on behind closed doors. Because of hazing, its effects, and consequences , we have come to a point where these types of
organizations should be terminated. Hazing includes any activity imposing humiliation, abuse, and endangerment of someone joining or participating
in a group regardless of the person's willingness to participate. This type of activity can be dated back to 387 B.C, the founding of Plato's academy ...

According to the University of Maryland's Important Hazing Statistics, for every ten students being hazed only one realizes that they have been hazed.
The repercussions of the tortious activity were not well considered by any parties involved in hazing. The impact on those being hazed includes, mental
instability, sleep deprivation, loss of control and empowerment, post–traumatic stress syndrome, declining grades, illness, and in the worst case
scenarios death. What is often not discussed is the impact on the lives of those who inflict the hazing. This can include decline in grades, media
scrutiny, damaged reputation, expulsion from school, deep feeling of shame and guilt, and ruined relationships. These are only a few listed
consequences that could happen personally, the legal consequences could include jail time and fines.Hazing not only affects the chapter, it also take a

Essay on The Evils of Hazing
The Evils of Hazing
You have just moved to a new school, and it is the first day. You thought it was a dream to be on the wrestling team, but in reality it was a nightmare.
After practice, you are hog–tied and beaten by your fellow teammates in a ritual known as hazing.
For many years, hazing has existed in high schools throughout America without many people knowing; more recently, however, laws are being passed
against this potentially deadly ritual as people are becoming educated on the topic. This paper will address what hazing is, how it can be stopped, and
my opinion on why it should be stopped.
According to the dictionary, hazing is to harass by exacting unnecessary or disagreeable work; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People who have been hazed before believe that if they had to go through with it, the next person should. The people being hazed on the other hand
have such a strong desire to be in that group that they will put up with whatever is dealt their way. It is a never ending cycle. So, how can we finally
try to break this cycle? Education is the best thing. The more you are aware that there is legislation out there and rules against this, the more prepared
you will be to prevent yourself from being in that situation. Find out about your school's policies relating to hazing and who you can report it to. Find
the information to tell you if there are anti–hazing laws in your state, in which case you can inform a law enforcement official (Olson 141). As stated
by Elizabeth Allan, co–founder of StopHazing.org, "Hazing is a part of our culture. That is why it is so important to become educated and redefine
these behaviors."
Someone who has helped to redefine these behaviors is Eileen Stevens. When her son Chuck died in a college hazing, she wrote to lawmakers,
appeared on television, and told her story to magazines. She then formed the Committee to Halt Useless College Killings, CHUCK for short. When her
son first died, and CHUCK was first formed, less than eighteen states outlawed hazing. Today, however, with the help of anti–hazing groups such as this

Conforming into hazing has shown an impact on a former group of pupils in Florida. Hazing is defined as "a species of brutal horseplay practised on"
new students attending a class (Oed.com). On November 2011, new band member Robert Champion Jr was hazed to death. Champion was enrolling to
become a new band student at the Florida A&M University. The routine of the band initiation involved running "down the center of the bus while being
punched, kicked and assaulted by senior" band members (Source D 2). The students who enacted this are now being charged with manslaughter. This
situation exemplifies the detrimental effects of conformity. All the "twelve former students" conformed to the ritual ofhazing and attempted to haze

There are two types of groups when it comes to peer pressure. There is a group that causes peer pressure and pressures others to submit to their
ideas; and there is the group that submits into the peer pressure to 'fit in'. The second one is the group that conforms. This is detrimental because a
team of psychologists found in a study that "young people are more likely to misbehave and take risks when their friends are watching" (Source E
1). This study consisted of a "six minute driving game" and they had to reach the destination before a certain time in order to receive an award.
The only thing keeping the players from reaching their destination was yellow traffic lights. If they went too slow they would not reach the
destination in the time given, if they went too fast then there was a "higher risk of crashing" (Source E 1). Peer pressure takes a role in this
because when told that two friends "were watching the play in the next room" the teenagers had "60 percent more crashes" (Source E 1). This is an
example of unintentional peer pressure because that friends group had the influence to make the teenager speed in the game. This also exemplifies
the act of conforming because the teenagers raced through the light in order to reach the destination faster and receive a "bigger prize" and look cool
to their friends (Source E 1). Peer pressure is detrimental to society because if teenager were to get behind the wheel

College Hazing: An Abuse Of Power

College Hazing Students come into college wanting to have fun and to meet new people. There is no better way to interact and find new friends than
to join a fraternity. Fraternities come with a high cost though. Hazing is one of the biggest concerns on college campuses these days. Hazing in
universities across the nation has become an increasingly dangerous ritual that is seemingly becoming more difficult to put an end to due to its
development into an "underground" activity. The major cause of hazing are the students' wanting to be accepted, and they will do just about anything
to feel that they belong.

Many believe that hazing in fraternities and in general are nothing more than silly tricks and harmless pranks like those from the 1980s hit comedy
Animal House. The realities of hazing are severely different than the witty images many people associate with them (Allen, Madden). Hazing is an
abuse of power that can have weakening and life–threatening consequences. Hazing has been associated with more than fifty deaths in college
fraternities and countless more physical injuries including paralysis, not to mention the devastating emotional effects that can result for so many
young men and women (hazingstudy.org/). In most cases the emotional effects can be much worse than the physical ones. Public humiliation can
ruin a students self esteem dramatically. Especially in this day in age when popularity and the acceptance of others mean so much to a nineteen
and twenty year olds. Kids coming into college their first year want the same lifestyle they had in high school. Back in high school they were
accepted and known by everyone at the school. It is tough to go from being a senior at your high school with all of your close friends that you
grew up with, and then come in as a freshman on a big college campus and not know anyone. It is like being the big fish in the pond, and then
becoming a small fish in the ocean. I asked Nick Vannoy, "Why do you think kids coming out of high school feel the need to join fraternities?" His

Hazing and Its Consequences
Over the years, there have been many stories published and movies made about the harmful and sometimes deadly consequences of the hazing rituals
being performed by university and high school students, military personnel, professional athletes and most recently by middle school students. These
rituals have affected the life of the people involve in hazing, whether is on the receiving end or on the delivering end. Educators along with the
communities have confronted practical jokes, physical abuse, excessive consumption of alcohol and other humiliating and harmful events.

With this growth, fraternities and sororities began to compete for students' loyalty and hazing became a common initiation practice. Those members that
served in the military prior to entering a university introduced more physical challenges to the initiation rites that lead to more physical and mental
injuries.
Hazing now a day starts as young as the middle school level, where the age group varies from eleven to fourteen years of age. Although most
reports at this level are of alleged hazing and mostly associated with sports, the students at the receiving end are scarred for life. In Kentucky, 6th
grade students that were part of the basketball team were pushed against lockers by 7th graders as a rite of passage. In New York, four teenagers
were facing charges in 2013 of forcible touching and unlawful imprisonment. As a parent, I ask myself what kind of morals are we teaching our
children and are we setting a good example for them to follow. Children at this young age should focus on learning that will prepare them for
adulthood and not making their peers feel inferior.
At the high school level, many stories have made the news and most involve athletes, coaches and teachers. In Fontana, California, a summer school
teacher allegedly instructed some of his students to carry out a hazing ritual on another student as a result of behavioral issues. In Illinois, a freshman

Hazing And Its Effects On Society
In the words of Hank Nuwer, "Hazing is an extraordinary activity that, when it occurs often enough, becomes perversely ordinary as those who engage
in it grow desensitized to its inhumanity." Hazing is a prevalent activity, common in many different types of groups. Hazing not only has negative
short–term psychological and physical effects, but negative long–term effects as well. Hazing is an act of abusing, degrading, humiliating, and
endangering a life of a person expecting to join or participate in a group by other group members regardless of willingness. Hazing can take forms in
physical, verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse. Isolation, abandonment in unfamiliar locations, public embarrassment, consumption of high amounts of
drugs, alcohol, and food are also common forms of hazing. Hazing is an initiation practice to welcome new members as a part of an organization
(Hazing, 1). Many organizations practice hazing. Some of the most common groups being high schoolers, college fraternities, college sororities, and the
Military. Many do not realize that hazing takes place in high schools all around the country. Sports teams, clubs, and upper–classmen use hazing as a
rite of passage to new students. At Edina High School in Minnesota, seniors duct tape sophomores to trees; then proceed to throw pickles, sauerkraut,
mustard, and raw eggs at them. The student–body president of Edina said that he and his classmates found that ritual, known as "Tapefest", to be

Pros And Cons Of Hazing In The United States
Hazing
Did you know that 1.5 million high school students experience hazing each year and that fifty–five percent of college students involved in clubs, teams,
and organizations also experience hazing ("Resources and Statistics")? Hazing is defined as "the imposition of strenuous, often humiliating, tasks as
part of a program of rigorous physical training and initiation"; furthermore, this practice has been occurring as early as the 1830s. Most accounts of
hazing take place in the initiation rituals of Greek–letter organizations and sports teams that are rooted in tradition, serve to demonstrate commitment to
joining a group, and involve humiliation, endangerment, and abuse to a prospective member. Although some people see these actions as good–natured
fun that forges friendships, celebrates tradition, and encourages group pride or school spirit, hazing has caused at least one death per year since 1969,
according to Frank College journalism professor Hank Nuwer, and, therefore, it should be illegal in the United States ("Hazing").
Many college groups, especially Greek–letter organizations and athletic teams, have come under fire for engaging in hazing practices that violate
school policies and local laws ("Hazing"). Hazing comes in many forms and can result in physical and psychological harm. Most practices of hazing
are categorized by two common types: subtle and violent. Subtle hazing is often a kind of hazing that is taken for granted or accepted as
"meaningless" but is just the opposite. Subtle forms include verbal abuse, sleep deprivation, social isolation, and harassment, which can all have an
exceedingly strong pull of one's emotional and general stability as an individual in a college setting. Violent hazing such as forced alcohol and drug
consumption, beating, branding, and sexual assault are instances that can easily result in injury and death ("Hazing"). A study was also conducted in
2015 that showed that seventy–one percent of those who are hazed suffer from negative consequences that may include but are not limited to loss of
sense of control and empowerment, decline in grades and course work, and illness or hospitalization with additional effects on family and friends.

Why Is Hazing Wrong
Across the nation, hazing has been a controversial topic for decades and decades. Hazing is most popular in college students who are seeking to
become a member of a fraternity or sorority. In most cases, hazing is a humiliating and dangerous initiation ritual. Although legal action has been
implemented in order to eradicate such behavior, not every state has anti–hazing laws. In fact, according to Stop Hazing, 44 out of 50 states have
anti–hazing laws, which leaves a remainder of 6 states who do not. Even though these laws exist, unfortunately, not everyone abides by them. This has
become a major issue in university fraternities in the United States because it is not only dangerous and unfair, but also disregarded.
There are multiple hazing activities that take place, such as: consumption of large amounts of alcohol and drinking games, singing and chanting in
public, being screamed, yelled at and cursed by other members, and being woken up in the middle of the night and deprived of sleep. In some cases,
hazing may include physical abuse as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Especially in universities, hazing is a common ritual and initiation process for fraternities that does more harm than good. Both physical and
psychological damage is done to not only the victim, but the family of the victim as well. Unfortunately, universities cover up hazing incidents in order
to protect their reputation as well as the students involved. Although all, but 6 states have anti–hazing laws, this is not enough to stop fraternities to
cease participation and involvement. Since this has become such a tradition across the nation, it is likely it will always remain, regardless of the
actions taken to prevent it. People who support hazing in fraternities will claim that hazing creates a form of brotherhood and unity. Even though this
could be a positive outlook, it is certainly meaningless comparing to the lives lost and individuals

Hazing has become a very popular in teens and young adults in colleges and sport activities in recent years. Hazing is the practice of rituals and other
activities involving harassment, abuse or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group (hazingprevention.org). Hazing occurs in

government. High ranked officials in the military claim there is a zero tolerance for hazing, but that clearly is not the case; "Despite top brass claims
that the blood pinning of Marine paratroopers isn't tolerated, hazing occurs in every branch of the U.S. Military". In a lot of the stories I read it
was said that officials on base at the time of the events knew what was going on. Clearly some of those so called moral soldiers look the other way
when it comes to certain things. They obviously have no problem with hazing and in some cases abuse. I agree with them on the hazing part, I think
hazing rituals should be allowed in the military. Some people say that it builds character and a strong sense of belonging. Although I have never
experienced any extreme hazing rituals I think it does build character and helps people understand their boundaries, which is a good thing to know.
My only experiences with hazing have just been carrying the baseball equipment on my high school baseball team. I along with other freshmen at the
time had to carry the balls, bag of bats and helmets and seed bucket pretty much every day. We had to because we were the freshmen, and the upper

biggest reasons people believe hazing is alright is because it enhances discipline.

Hazing And Its Effect On Society Essay
Hazing is defined as the practice of rituals, challenges, and other activities involving harassment, abuse, or humiliation used as a way of initiating a
person into a group. There are many different social settings that hazing has been used. This includes gangs, sports teams, schools, fraternities,
sororities, and even the military. It is very popular in these social groups because it is used as a way making newcomers earn their right to be part of
the group. Sometimes it is used as a team building/bonding method and in other ways it used to display power over the newcomers. Usually hazing is
done all in good fun with simple pranks and activities, but in many cases it can lead to more serious abuse. In more serious cases (usually with
fraternities), hazing has lead to the victim being hospitalized or even killed. Fraternity hazing is undoubtedly where more of the serious hazing
occurs because it is basically a part of the "tradition" of the fraternity. In a lot of cases, forced alcohol consumption and/or physical abuse is part of
the hazing, which is why many victims are hospitalized or killed. In The River King by Alice Hoffman, a young man named Gus Pierce was a
victim of hazing at the Haddan School. Gus was a freshman at the Haddan School and he was also a bit of an outsider. He did not seem to conform

expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them regardless of a person's willingness to
participate." (Allen & Madden, 2008, p. 2). Acts of hazing span a wide range of behaviors, such as being forced to consume large amounts ... Show

Youth who are victimized by peers through multiple forms (e.g., physical, verbal, exclusion) endorse an increasingly higher degree of internalizing
symptoms (Wang, Iannotti, Luk, & Nansel, 2010), and those who are chronically victimized by peers over time show increasingly worse symptoms
(Rosen, Underwood, Beron, Gentsch, Wharton, & Rahdar, 2009). This suggests a potentially graded effect of chronic peer victimization. Internalizing
problems associated with bullying can be so severe that PTSD symptoms emerge (Idsoe, Dyregrov, & Idseo, 2012); therefore, previously bullied
students may experience college hazing in a more negative way than their non–bullied peers. Specifically, while hazing experiences may be rationalized
as a means to a social end, the hazing behaviors could very well mimic previous victimization experiences since hazing (Allan & Madden, 2008) and
bullying (Gladden, Vivolo–Kantor, Hamburger, & Lumpkin, 2013) share similar characteristics, including a power differential and the intentional
infliction of distressing experiences. Students who carry a "bullying victim" label may be particularly vulnerable to re–experiencing peer aggression
due to their identification with having been bullied (Sharkey et al.,

Hazing And Substance Abuse
We have a problem with hazing. There is people around the world who are rude and mean to other people. There has been so many incidents with
hazing. This can get so bad people can actually suicide. Hazing is usually but not always in sports. Like in the Ohio State band they had an issue with
hazing and this kid was always upset. Nobody cares about people that are upset though. Hazing needs to stop now.
You can solve this hazing issue. If you play sports and you know there is hazing going on try to stop it. If I was a coach I would get a body guard.
A bodyguard could help watch the players and see what they're doing. Also a bodyguard can keep them all together. A bodyguard is not just gonna
not watch you and be like, "Oh yeah you can fight I'll just stand here and watch" no they are gonna stop you and if you d fight you can go to jail. If
I was a player and there was a bodyguard I would be honestly scared to do anything wrong. I would bring the bodyguard on the bus also so nothing
happens. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also take a Polygraph test. So they know if there lying about hazing because you can go to jail for a life hazing. Hazing is like bullying and it is not
good. I would make the people take at least two polygraph tests. If you find out somebody is being hazed I would get them help and try to help them
out. I guarantee that the person being hazed is going through depression. If not then that's good and you can get them help before they start going
through

Hazing Should Be Allowed In College

  • 1. Hazing Should Be Allowed In College Hazing can be defined as the humiliation and dangerous activities that teenagers encounter when joining a fraternity or sorority in college. Over the years, these rituals can be extremely threatening for college students; for instance being tied up for twenty–four hours or even playing intense drinking games. When being in a frat house, teens get to experience living college to the fullest and having the opportunity to pledge for whichever fraternity one would please on doing. All over the world, from different colleges, these teens have to go through this just to be a part of Greek Life. Is it worth it? Well according to "The Fraternity Advisor" it states, "There are over 9 million Greek members nationally." Many people take fraternity and Greek Life very serious today.Society has viewed hazing very unpredictable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first ever fraternity house was discovered by five students on December 5th, 1776 at the college of William and Mary. The name of the fraternity was then associated as Phi Beta Kappa which means "love of learning is the guide of life". If a person in college is looking to join a fraternity, the person would go to all of the fraternities houses and meet all the people in that specific fraternity and get to know one another to see if he fits in well. This step of the fraternity process is called rush season. Furthermore, people who belong to a fraternity are known as brothers. These brothers are the ones who have the massive parties in college. Thus, if the brothers decide that if they see a person who wants to join or has the potential, that person will begin to pledge for that fraternity. When pledging for that specific brotherhood, there are multiple stages that teens have to go through and sometimes could take weeks or even months. As the teen begins to pledge, the person has to show loyalty and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. An Inside Look at Hazing As prevalent as hazing is among male college athletes, many people are surprised by the statistics surroundings this controversial topic. For instance in 1989–1999, of a survey of over 350,000 athletes, 250,000 plus said they had experienced hazing of some sort during their time with their associated team. One in five of these students experienced potentially illegal hazing including binge drinking, sexual acts, and destruction and vandalizing of property. Half of these men were involved in drinking contests or other alcohol related incidents, and only one in five experienced positive initiation practices such as team trips or team building exercises. When the geography of college campuses was evaluated, it was found that western and eastern schools participated heavily in alcohol related initiations, whereas southern and Midwestern campuses had a larger prevalence of dangerous or potentially illegal rituals (not to say binge drinking isn't dangerous). Clearly hazing amongst athletics is not just isolated incidents of serious outcomes that happen to make the news due to their outrageous natures, but is a rampant practice that affects over half of every male athlete in college. Hazing, as defined by Aldo Cimino (2011) actually makes it different than a ritual or initiation although the words are commonly interchanged. Hazing is any act that makes a newcomer have to do something whose cost is not relevant to the normal social order of the group. The example Cimino gives is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. What Are Hazing and Stockholm Syndrome? Literature Review Hazing has been a long time issue that dates back to Plato and Martin Luther. There are many forms to the act, and all have been recognized. However, what about the effects that hazing has mentally on these young adults? The question I would like to pose is: How do the effects of hazing compare to Stockholm syndrome? Let us first describe what both hazing and Stockholm syndrome is so that the effects can be better understood. Hazing is the imposition of strenuous, often humiliating, tasks as part of a program of rigorous physical training and initiation or forcing someone to do humiliating and sometimes dangerous initiation rituals, especially as imposed on college students seeking membership to a fraternity or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The acts of hazing that I have heard and read about are absolutely appalling. They range from breast ranking, circling "problem areas" on bodies, forcing them to strip down and provocatively dance in front of fraternity men, or making them chose between using hard drugs or using a sex toy in front of their potential new sisters. In no way does it make sense that young women can love their hazers so much, yet it happens again and again every year. A shocking statistic found in Shelly Campo, Gretchen Poulos, and John Sipple's study entitled: "Prevalence and Profiling: Hazing Among College Students and Points of Intervention" was that becoming Greek at the particular university put one at roughly a 40% chance at being hazed and that one is about 23% likely to then becoming a hazer. In this study, they also found that more Greek students indicated hazing has "fun" than their non–Greek fellow students. In this study, they sent an on–line survey to two thousand undergraduate students, where 736 students completed it to receive their final findings. In this study, they looked at positive team building activities verses negative ones. Having their participants do an on–line survey was the best method to get results. However, there was no reward for completing the survey and there were no reminder emails asking them to take the survey. This could have helped them to have a better turn out and receive a better understanding of the sample population of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Greek Hazing Research Paper In February of this year, a 19–year–old brother at the fraternity's Cornell University chapter died following a ritual in which he was kidnapped by several pledges and given alcohol each time he incorrectly answered a question about the fraternity. During this process, he was blindfolded and his hands and feet were tied. His blood–alcohol level was four–times the legal driving limit in New York. In the article "Safe and Sound" there was another incident 'Florida A&M University (FAMU), which was under fire a few years ago for an incident in which a member of the school's marching band was killed during hazing.' Also in the other article 'High School, Where Hazing is Amazing' it says that 10 students had felony charges for hazing freshman on the basketball and baseball teams. Hazing is a huge problem it is basically strenuous, humiliating, task of a program/group of beyond hard physical training and initiation. This problem needs to be solved because there has been many of deaths and sever injuries from this type of 'activity' being performed. There should not be innocent live coming to an end just because frat members want them to do crazy things to get initiated. • 5. Hazing On College Campuses Hazing is known as action that usually takes place when one wishes to join an organization, club or sports team. Generally, hazing is found to take place on most college campuses. Research has shown that 2 in 5 students say that they are aware of hazing taking place on their college campus. It's not common for hazing to happen during Middle or High School years. Unfortunately, there have been over 250,000 students that have experienced some form of hazing. On a rare occasion do students, coaches, or advisors admit to having any knowledge of hazing activities. Hazing is usually conducted by someone that likes to feel that they are in control and may even be considered a bully. Any type of hazing is unacceptable. In order to join, you should not be made to feel forced to do things that you really don't want to. Hazing has truly scared people away from wanting to join organizations. Sometimes the mental and physical anguish is too much for an individual to endure. There are a lot of things that you can do to prevent hazing, like learn more about it, build more friendships with people, because if you are going join a group, you have to be friendly, be a nice person, have a good attitude about things, and be able to work well with others. Hazing is very illegal, it's another sign of abuse that shouldn't be happening especially, when it can result in someone being killed. • 6. Anti-Greek Organizations: The Role Of Hazing In The Media Hazing: The practice of rituals and other activities involving harassment, abuse or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group. Hazing is seen in many different types of social groups, including gangs, sports teams, schools, military units, and fraternities/ sororities. Hazing has been around throughout history and is used as a tool to make new members or pledges bond and create a trust between one another. The media is the main source when it comes to catching organizations like fraternities and sororities engaging in hazing or hazing–like activities. • 7. The Controversial Role Of Hazing In The Present Day Hazing is a common ritual found in both academic and employment settings. Although hazing was instituted a few centuries ago, its prominence can still be seen in modern day society. For that reason, this paper will examine three areas that includes the background of hazing, the viewpoint comparison on hazing through two peer–reviewed articles, and why hazing is still controversial in the present day. Background of Hazing According to Parks, Jones, Ray, Hughey, and Cox (2015), "hazing as part of a rite of passage process dates back to the beginning of mankind" with "the first documented instances of organized hazing" coming "from ancient Greece, where prospective soldiers" demonstrated "their loyalty" through "painful and uncomfortable experiences" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The captain can remind teammates of the hazing prevention workshop and suggest a progressive team dinner where each senior member of the team provides a food course. (Heibert & Klatt, 2001, p. 170–2; p. 17) Keep in mind that Waldron's (2012) suggestions for reducing hazing may have little influence due to "the countervailing force of peer pressure" (Edelman, 2005, p. 328). Therefore, it is highly unlikely that this contradictory approach will succeed using a short–range tactic to replace a long–range strategy (Fallacies, 2006, More..., para. 1–42; Heibert & Klatt, 2001, p. 170–2). Hence, further discussions are needed to determine which author(s) presented the stronger argument. Taking all this into account, Waldron (2012) has presented a stronger argument than Josefowitz and Gadon (1989). The reason for this is due to Waldron (2012) maintaining a neutral position, while presenting strong scientific evidence on the subject of hazing. Also, the statistics presented by Waldron (2012) did not have any "fallacies" when compared to that of Josefowitz and Gadon (1989) (Fallacies, 2006, More..., para. 1–42). Based upon these differences and how society has changed its cultural stance on hazing, Waldron (2012) has clearly given the better argument and solution for stopping hazing. Hence, a further discussion is needed on why hazing remains a controversial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. College Hazing In College College Hazing Since 2005, there have been more than 60 hazing related deaths and over 20,000 hazing related injuries (College). Hazing is a ritual in which harassment, abuse, forceful consumption of alcohol and drugs, and torture are used to initiate a person into a group ("Learners Dictionary"). Hazing is a standard expectation especially when joining a college fraternity or sorority. One's initiation usually subjects him/her to physical abuse; even though, that physical abuse is a felony in most states. Although some blame the pledgees for voluntarily putting themselves at risk for detrimental harm, schools' administrations need to issue stricter consequences such as suspension and potential expulsion for hazing in order to stop abuse and save lives. Research and empirical evidence indicates an influx of hazing on college campuses which is simply unacceptable. Research conducted by Cornell University in 2003 reported that only 17% of college students across the country experienced hazing ("Cornell Research"). The 17% who said to have been hazed also stated that it was not worth it and the abuse had everlasting mental effects; moreover, those same people said that hazing must come to an end and that it is a sad excuse to harm others. On a darker note, research conducted by University of Maine in 2008 recorded troubling statistics. Their research had shown 55% of students claiming to have been hazed ("Maine Research on Hazing"). Hazing humiliates, imprisons, and kills people. Some say hazing builds teams. They say "Initiations require mutual support and bonding among members."(Student life 2011) They need consent on both sides and people willingly do this. "Those more seniors know that the initiates wish to join with such intensity that they are willing to let themselves get humiliated."(Student life 2011) Also not all hazing is bad. They only report negative hazing incidents that leave people dead. We don't know all the positive examples. Like my dad. He went through hazing to get into his fraternity. He didn't get beaten or forced to drink. But, he had to learn things about his fraternity brothers. He got to know them and created friends for life. Though, hazing kills people. III.In order to prove you are strong is to stand up and not taking the hurt anymore because you care for your wellbeing. IV.You have to look out for yourself because at the end of the day no one cares for you as much as yourself. It is a ritual on many college campuses, especially in Greek life, forcing the students to do acts like, binge drinking, humiliation, sexual acts, and more. It is a very dangerous act that could include traumatic injuries like beating, drowning, and could even result in death on the student being hazed. Hazing is a growing problem here at The University of Alabama and at other college campus's around the nation and there needs to be changes presented to cut out these dangerous practices. For this act to be stopped students, administration, and even parents must take steps to eliminating hazing on campus. Currently hazing is illegal in 44 states, but these dangerous practices continue on college campuses all over the country. Whenever the word hazing is mentioned people usually associate it with Greek life, however hazing is also present among sports teams, marching bands, military groups, and even honor societies. There are two types of groups when it comes to peer pressure. There is a group that causes peer pressure and pressures others to submit to their ideas; and there is the group that submits into the peer pressure to 'fit in'. This is detrimental because a team of psychologists found in a study that "young people are more likely to misbehave and take risks when their friends are watching" (Source E 1). This study consisted of a "six minute driving game" and they had to reach the destination before a certain time in order to receive an award. The only thing keeping the players from reaching their destination was yellow traffic lights. If they went too slow they would not reach the destination in the time given, if they went too fast then there was a "higher risk of crashing" (Source E 1). Peer pressure takes a role in this because when told that two friends "were watching the play in the next room" the teenagers had "60 percent more crashes" (Source E 1). This is an example of unintentional peer pressure because that friends group had the influence to make the teenager speed in the game. This also exemplifies the act of conforming because the teenagers raced through the light in order to reach the destination faster and receive a "bigger prize" and look cool to their friends (Source E 1). In Kentucky, 6th grade students that were part of the basketball team were pushed against lockers by 7th graders as a rite of passage. In New York, four teenagers were facing charges in 2013 of forcible touching and unlawful imprisonment. As a parent, I ask myself what kind of morals are we teaching our children and are we setting a good example for them to follow. Children at this young age should focus on learning that will prepare them for adulthood and not making their peers feel inferior. At the high school level, many stories have made the news and most involve athletes, coaches and teachers. In Fontana, California, a summer school teacher allegedly instructed some of his students to carry out a hazing ritual on another student as a result of behavioral issues. In Illinois, a freshman ... • 28. Hazing And Its Effects On Society In the words of Hank Nuwer, "Hazing is an extraordinary activity that, when it occurs often enough, becomes perversely ordinary as those who engage in it grow desensitized to its inhumanity." Hazing is a prevalent activity, common in many different types of groups. Hazing not only has negative short–term psychological and physical effects, but negative long–term effects as well. Hazing is an act of abusing, degrading, humiliating, and endangering a life of a person expecting to join or participate in a group by other group members regardless of willingness. Hazing can take forms in physical, verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse. Isolation, abandonment in unfamiliar locations, public embarrassment, consumption of high amounts of drugs, alcohol, and food are also common forms of hazing. Hazing is an initiation practice to welcome new members as a part of an organization (Hazing, 1). Many organizations practice hazing. Some of the most common groups being high schoolers, college fraternities, college sororities, and the Military. Many do not realize that hazing takes place in high schools all around the country. Sports teams, clubs, and upper–classmen use hazing as a rite of passage to new students. At Edina High School in Minnesota, seniors duct tape sophomores to trees; then proceed to throw pickles, sauerkraut, mustard, and raw eggs at them. The student–body president of Edina said that he and his classmates found that ritual, known as "Tapefest", to be belittling and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Pros And Cons Of Hazing In The United States Hazing Did you know that 1.5 million high school students experience hazing each year and that fifty–five percent of college students involved in clubs, teams, and organizations also experience hazing ("Resources and Statistics")? Hazing is defined as "the imposition of strenuous, often humiliating, tasks as part of a program of rigorous physical training and initiation"; furthermore, this practice has been occurring as early as the 1830s. Most accounts of hazing take place in the initiation rituals of Greek–letter organizations and sports teams that are rooted in tradition, serve to demonstrate commitment to joining a group, and involve humiliation, endangerment, and abuse to a prospective member. Although some people see these actions as good–natured fun that forges friendships, celebrates tradition, and encourages group pride or school spirit, hazing has caused at least one death per year since 1969, according to Frank College journalism professor Hank Nuwer, and, therefore, it should be illegal in the United States ("Hazing"). Many college groups, especially Greek–letter organizations and athletic teams, have come under fire for engaging in hazing practices that violate school policies and local laws ("Hazing"). Hazing comes in many forms and can result in physical and psychological harm. Most practices of hazing are categorized by two common types: subtle and violent. Subtle hazing is often a kind of hazing that is taken for granted or accepted as "meaningless" but is just the opposite. Subtle forms include verbal abuse, sleep deprivation, social isolation, and harassment, which can all have an exceedingly strong pull of one's emotional and general stability as an individual in a college setting. Violent hazing such as forced alcohol and drug consumption, beating, branding, and sexual assault are instances that can easily result in injury and death ("Hazing"). A study was also conducted in 2015 that showed that seventy–one percent of those who are hazed suffer from negative consequences that may include but are not limited to loss of sense of control and empowerment, decline in grades and course work, and illness or hospitalization with additional effects on family and friends. • 34. Why Is Hazing Wrong Across the nation, hazing has been a controversial topic for decades and decades. Hazing is most popular in college students who are seeking to become a member of a fraternity or sorority. In most cases, hazing is a humiliating and dangerous initiation ritual. Although legal action has been implemented in order to eradicate such behavior, not every state has anti–hazing laws. In fact, according to Stop Hazing, 44 out of 50 states have anti–hazing laws, which leaves a remainder of 6 states who do not. Even though these laws exist, unfortunately, not everyone abides by them. This has become a major issue in university fraternities in the United States because it is not only dangerous and unfair, but also disregarded. There are multiple hazing activities that take place, such as: consumption of large amounts of alcohol and drinking games, singing and chanting in public, being screamed, yelled at and cursed by other members, and being woken up in the middle of the night and deprived of sleep. In some cases, hazing may include physical abuse as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Especially in universities, hazing is a common ritual and initiation process for fraternities that does more harm than good. Although all, but 6 states have anti–hazing laws, this is not enough to stop fraternities to cease participation and involvement. Since this has become such a tradition across the nation, it is likely it will always remain, regardless of the actions taken to prevent it. People who support hazing in fraternities will claim that hazing creates a form of brotherhood and unity. With the way the world is today, and how long hazing has been going on I believe it will never be stopped. Hazing is involved in so many things in this world. There are some groups out there that people have to go through tasks just for applying. Then after if he or she makes it in there are more tests and tasks to go through. It goes on in sports, colleges, the military and plenty of other team groups. I personally do not think it is all that bad, to a certain extent. High ranked officials in the military claim there is a zero tolerance for hazing, but that clearly is not the case; "Despite top brass claims that the blood pinning of Marine paratroopers isn't tolerated, hazing occurs in every branch of the U.S. Military". In a lot of the stories I read it was said that officials on base at the time of the events knew what was going on. Clearly some of those so called moral soldiers look the other way when it comes to certain things. They obviously have no problem with hazing and in some cases abuse. I agree with them on the hazing part, I think hazing rituals should be allowed in the military. Some people say that it builds character and a strong sense of belonging. Although I have never experienced any extreme hazing rituals I think it does build character and helps people understand their boundaries, which is a good thing to know. My only experiences with hazing have just been carrying the baseball equipment on my high school baseball team. I along with other freshmen at the time had to carry the balls, bag of bats and helmets and seed bucket pretty much every day. We had to because we were the freshmen, and the upper class–men had had their turn being the "team bitches". I honestly think that helped me realize how important teamwork and discipline is. • 38. Hazing And Its Effect On Society Essay Hazing is defined as the practice of rituals, challenges, and other activities involving harassment, abuse, or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group. There are many different social settings that hazing has been used. This includes gangs, sports teams, schools, fraternities, sororities, and even the military. It is very popular in these social groups because it is used as a way making newcomers earn their right to be part of the group. Sometimes it is used as a team building/bonding method and in other ways it used to display power over the newcomers. Usually hazing is done all in good fun with simple pranks and activities, but in many cases it can lead to more serious abuse. In more serious cases (usually with fraternities), hazing has lead to the victim being hospitalized or even killed. Fraternity hazing is undoubtedly where more of the serious hazing occurs because it is basically a part of the "tradition" of the fraternity. In a lot of cases, forced alcohol consumption and/or physical abuse is part of the hazing, which is why many victims are hospitalized or killed. In The River King by Alice Hoffman, a young man named Gus Pierce was a victim of hazing at the Haddan School. Gus was a freshman at the Haddan School and he was also a bit of an outsider. He did not seem to conform to everybody else at this private school and had no intention to do so. At the Haddan School, Gus lived in the dorm known as the Chalk House. While there are psychosocial benefits to campus involvement (Foubert & Grainger, 2006), some groups require initiation rituals, which may come in the form of hazing, defined as, "any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them regardless of a person's willingness to participate." (Allen & Madden, 2008, p. 2). Acts of hazing span a wide range of behaviors, such as being forced to consume large amounts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Youth who are victimized by peers through multiple forms (e.g., physical, verbal, exclusion) endorse an increasingly higher degree of internalizing symptoms (Wang, Iannotti, Luk, & Nansel, 2010), and those who are chronically victimized by peers over time show increasingly worse symptoms (Rosen, Underwood, Beron, Gentsch, Wharton, & Rahdar, 2009). This suggests a potentially graded effect of chronic peer victimization. Internalizing problems associated with bullying can be so severe that PTSD symptoms emerge (Idsoe, Dyregrov, & Idseo, 2012); therefore, previously bullied students may experience college hazing in a more negative way than their non–bullied peers. Specifically, while hazing experiences may be rationalized as a means to a social end, the hazing behaviors could very well mimic previous victimization experiences since hazing (Allan & Madden, 2008) and bullying (Gladden, Vivolo–Kantor, Hamburger, & Lumpkin, 2013) share similar characteristics, including a power differential and the intentional infliction of distressing experiences. Students who carry a "bullying victim" label may be particularly vulnerable to re–experiencing peer aggression due to their identification with having been bullied (Sharkey et al., ...
