2. DEFINITION:-
Pulmonary edema is a condition which caused by
excessive fluid in the lungs. In this fluid collect in
numerous air sec in lungs making it difficult to breath.
3. Cardiogenic:-
Coronary artery disease:-
When there is blockage or narrowing of coronary artery it
also cause weakness of left ventricular muscle.
So pumping action of the heart( LT ventricle) weakened.
blood gradually back up in to the lungs forcing the fluid in
blood to pass through the capillary wall in to the air sec.
Cardiomyopathy:-
Due to damage of the heart muscle heart not able to
pump sufficient amount of blood which leads to faster heart
beat with exertion to maintain body need, body consume
salt to increase BP. Salt cause water retainsion in the body.
Heart valve problems.
Untreated high BP enlarge the heart.
4.
5.
6. Non Cardiogenic:-
ARDS:- Hear the lungs suddenly filled with fluid and
inflammatory WBC due to any trauma, sepsis &
pneumonia.
High altitudes:- When someone goes above 8000 feet-
2400 meter increase from constriction of pulmonary
artery.
Illegal drugs:- Heroine & cocaine causes non
Cardiogenic pulmonary edema.
Pulmonary embolism.
Viral infection such as hanta virus & cause irritation to
small airway & alveoli resulting in fluid accumulation
Smoke inhalation:- It damage the membrane between
the air sec & capillaries & allow the fluid to enter the
lungs.
Drowning & aspiration of gastric fluid.
7. COMPLICATION:-
Lower extremity & abdominal swelling.
Build up fluid in the membrane in the lungs.
Congestion & swelling of liver.
PREVENTION:-
Control BP.
Don’t smoke
Healthy Weight
Manage stress
8. History collection
Physical examination
Chest X-Ray:- To detect pulmonary edema.
Pulse oxymetry:- To determine oxygen
concentration in extremities.
Blood test :- To determine sodium, potassium &
marker of renal function ( Creatinin, urea),
inflammatory marker such as C- Reactive , Liver
enzyme.
ECG
ECHO
Cardiac cath
9.
10. Diuretics:- To remove excessive water from body.
EX- Lasix.
Morphine:- To relieve shortness of breath & anxiety
O2 therapy :- To relive hypoxia
Dobutamin:- To increase cardiac contractility.
