2. Whiplash
The key point in this shot is that we
can see blood on his hands and
around his neck which could
represent an injury, death, weakness
however in this case Andrew is shown
sitting on a drum kit determent to win
and success in what he loves doing.
Andrew, the drummer in Whiplash is presented as a
powerless young man, however has so much
potential to become really successful and get a
career in drumming.
Here Andrew is shown looking
at his teacher from an low
angle shot, which again shows
him having less power. In the
frame we can also see a drum
kit which is linked with his
passion and shows his
determination.
In this two shot medium close up it
is clear that Andrew is losing his
confidence and his teacher is
expecting a lot more from him. We
can see this by their facial
expressions and body language
shown by both of these characters.
3. The Green Mile
John Coffey, the main character in
The Green Mile is represented as a
huge black man in jail with no
power or confidence
This over the shoulder shot is clearly
showing John Coffey in a lot less power
even though he is bigger than the
guard. We cannot see the guards facial
expression however it is clear that he
feels more powerful not knowing of
John’s special abilities and that he is
innocent.
This medium shot with
John in the middle is
outlining him being the
main character. It is also
making the audience
realise the pain that he is
feeling being trapped in
there even though he is a
good person. This close up of John’s
face is making the
audience feel
sympathy towards him
because of his facial
expressions. For
example how innocent
he looks or the sadness
in his face.
4. Divergent
Tris, the main character of divergent is
represented as an average young
woman who is scared to take on such a
risk but detriment to win.
In this medium shot it seems like Tris has
found some sort of safety and security
in Four. This is because of her body
language towards him. This could
represent her as being weak and
needing support from others.
This medium shot of
Tris is showing her
awareness of what’s
around her as well as
representing her
being confident and
having the
motivation to win.
This shot is focused on Tris which
is showing her importance as a
character however her body
language and facial expressions
are making the audience feel
mixed emotions. In a way she
looks scared and frightened but
it also seems like she’s detriment
to fight her fears.
