2. David Fincher is an American film director,
producer and music video producer. His work
includes 'The Curious Case of Benjamin
Button’, 'The Game' and 'The Social Network'.
3. Fincher has directed many thrillers but a few of them
are 'The Game', 'Zodiac' and 'The Girl with the Dragon
Tattoo'. This is due to his style conventions, this allows
for a dramatic feel throughout his films. For example,
in his film 'The Game' which is the story of a wealthy
investment banker who is given the chance by his
brother to take part in his own real life game that
integrates in strange ways from his everyday life,
fincher uses different effects such as dark lighting and
sudden changes in music. One other method of editing
that fincher has used is his ability to slow down images
and scenes. An example of this is when the main
character Nicholas goes to a hotel (because he left his
American Express card there.
4. This hotel was also filled with drugs and indecent
images) that has been already paid for even
though he had never been there before. This scene
goes from complete fast paced meltdown to
Nicholas leaving very slowly. Fincher also uses
rock and roll music to show at the start and end of
the film that the film is a thriller. Fincher also uses
the film to mess with his audience's minds. For
example, everybody thinks that he is being hunted
down by his enemies but fincher dismisses this as
in the end of the film it is revealed that his enemies
are his really his friends and this is the end of 'The
Game'.
5. Furthermore, Fincher also has made fantasy drama films
such as 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'. This is a
story created by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is
living life in reverse. Likewise to 'The Game', Fincher uses
lighting effects to affect the storyline. For example the film
starts in a dark hospital in the middle of a hurricane. This is
to show the sadness that Daisy is on her death bed.
However as Benjamin grows younger the lighting and the
mood improves as he learns how to walk, gets a job and falls
in love. But whenever the present is in the picture with
daisy on her death bed the light once again goes dark.
During the film Fincher uses very clever links to to
influerence the audience to feel sympathetic throughout the
film. For example Fincher links both Benjamin's life span to
the Clock built
6. by Monsieur Gateau. Fincher is also very clever in the
way that he uses a hummingbird as a sign for
departing spirits, two examples of this are firstly, when
Benjamin see his one and only Hummingbird after his
Tugboat captain is killed. And the other when Daisy
dies at the end of the film, she says goodnight
Benjamin to a hummingbird flying outside her
window. Out of the three films that I have watched
created by Fincher 'The Curious case of Benjamin
Button is the film with the most editing purely because
of the fact that Fincher has used a lot of cgi, filters and
he uses a lot of extra camera angles such as close ups
and over the shoulder. Fincher also uses ballet and
romantic music with a bit of theatrical music to show
the genre of the film.
7. Finally 'The Social Network'. This film is one of David
Fincher's most famous films because it as well as showing
the creating of Facebook, the film show the audience of
Facebook co-founders Mark Zuckerburg and Eduardo
Saverin. This film is a Drama film based on a true story as I
have labeled. But the main aspect that makes this film a
drama is the aspects shown is Zuckerburg life that are
stunningly broadcasted throughout the film by Fincher.
Fincher has especially used actor Jesse Eissenburg to show
the naivety of Mark Zuckerburg. This film was set in 2003
and is based as the audience find out after the film goes on,
on the lawsuit set up by both Eduardo who was
'Zuckerburg only friend' and Olympic rowing team (also
fellow Harvard students) The Winklevoss twins. Fincher
also uses the same fount as Facebook to create the title of
'The Social Network'.
8. Fincher has created this film to be fast paced so the
audience can know what was going on quickly, but as I
said earlier after a while we realise that the film is
based on flashbacks from the current day (lawsuit
meeting going on between Mark Zuckerburg, Eduardo
Selvin and the Winklevoss twins) with the film ending
in saying what happened in the end but fincher leaves
the film in the sence that the ending of the film wasn't
the end because the company still exists and the story
was real so unlike in Fincher's past two movies I have
examined where we think the characters will just go on
and live their normal lives, we know from real events
that these characters are because they are not fiction.
9. Overall in all three films David Fincher has
used many different effect but the most
common as it has been in each film is that
Fincher uses flashbacks from the present in the
film to the past, In 'The Game' it was Nicholas
looking back at his father, in 'The Curious Case
of Benjamin Button' it was Daisy and her
daughter Caroline telling the story of Benjamin
and finally in 'The Social Network' it was
flashing back at the character's life’s at Harvard
and other times of their lives.
