Existing Product 1Story (Brief synopsis)
The story of the conjuring two in short. The story behind this at
first follows two plot line. The first plot focuses on a family that
live in a house that they recently moved into it is based on the
‘true story’ of Enfield Lane which is still renowned for the story
that happened there and is a tourists attraction. This house is
haunted by different demons, this family has a mum and her
children, in the house one girl in particular starts getting haunted
by the spirit of a old man who lived in the house that they are
now living in, the man targets the girl when she is sleeping and
when she home and alone, this starts by invading her bedroom
on a night and telling her to leave his house : “This is my house!”
this leads the family into depression with no one believing them
on the house being haunted. Whi8le this is happening the sub
plot is that of the Warren family a couple of demon hunters so to
speak, they have a subplot story where Lauren warren is visited
by a demon nun who comes to show her a vision of her husband
dying and her daughter been kidnapped. Back to the main plot
the main characters phone the police and the police come over
to discover that there is strange things happening. An
interviewer comes from a public paper to record an interview, in
this interview they recorded the voice of the old man talking
through the girls voice. The police contact the church and send
this recording to the church asking for help. The church then
contact the warrens and send them to the house, this leads the
subplot into the main plot and brings everything together, the
ending leads to the demon nun from the subplot being the main
antagonist and that the demon was controlling the old man from
the beginning and the nun was sowing the death of her husband
to warm the warrens to stay away from the house. In the end
the warrens realize the old man was being used and the nun.
They are able to fix the problem save the day and the family
after a traumatic experience and all end well. The house is still
there today and it ends with images of the real family from the
conjuring and playing the real footage and recordings they
caught rom the house in the time it was set.
Mise en scene
This film was made by warner bros studios and Rat Pac dune
entertainment as well as new line cinema. It was released on the
10th of June 2016. the production started a year before in 2015
after the first film the conjuring released in 2013 it had 2 years of
planning before production which is more then a lot of other
movies get. They filmed the movie in a variety of different places
and used different cameras for different scenes they had to work
on special affects as well as cg. The story of Enfield Lane had to
be researched and permission needed to be able to find
locations to film if its filmed in the actual house. And create a
replica of the house to the inside and exact look would have to
be mapped.
Audience appeal
this product appeals to its audience by creating a mystery
shrouded poster to advertise the film. The antagonist nun
shown on the right of the screen is a showing a horrifying villain,
this villain is there for audience appeal as people are more likely
to pay attention to a product if it has a creepy feature, the nun is
also shrouded by darkness this means you have to really look at
the camera, its clever because you don’t see it at first but once
you see it, its always there. This type of feature appeals to the
audience because of how the entire poster brings a sinister tone
and style to it. This film appeals to a male and female audience
because the two hero's/protagonists in the movie are male and
female, this gives people relatable characters and so it appeals
to both genders. This film has an age rating of 15 years by the
BBFC this is because it has dark tones and violent scenes with
some bad language and gore. This product appeals to a horror/
thriller psychographic of people.
Why did I choose this?
I chose this movie because of how it helped shape my
expectations of what a horror film should be and how the plot
should work, it was difficult to choose if I wanted to have a
insidious movie of a conjuring movie. I felt it had a lot of
suspenseful camera shots and music that I could take inspiration
from, as well as plotline and how the subplot links into the story
a nice idea that could be used in my short film.
What have I learned from this?
I have learned how different parts of in studio lighting look on
the poster and how they use different colours to connate
deeper meanings to there poster. I have also learned how
different camera shots build more tension when it follows the
main character from there perspective because when they get
scared you also get scared by jumpy parts of the movie I also
learnt how different drops in music can set new atmospheres
and create a different tone which is an aspect that I will be
taking into my own work when I make my production
experiments and my production.
Post production
This poster was designed to show light around the main
character, they looked hard to find a way to get the perfect cast
to play the characters that appear in historical pictures and
getting the cast choice to fit into the film and act them in a way
that is realistic to what is happening around them. Making sure
that the cinematography is working in the movie and standing
out as a well produce film. This movie would have needed to
create story boards for the planning and the sets to the movie
would have had to of being created for each scene of the movie
dependent on when it was filmed and how big the budget was.
Techniques
The techniques in the poster start with the light at the window, the
window is bright and the girl covers the light and this represents
that there is hope for her, the religious cross in the poster, this sets
the tone of the movie because it makes it out as a spiritual movie.
The dark character of the movie the antagonist is in the right side
of the poster hiding in the background and this shows the villain of
the movie an evil nun adding more religious imagery and it also
represents how evil the character is as there is no light around it
only darkness.
Type of image
This was set up and filmed in warner bros studios, when making
the conjuring 2 they visited the Enfield house and made noted of
exactly how it looked and re created it the studio with different
features making it look exactly like the house from the 70s. They
use different angles on the movie to show how they use birds eye
views to open up different areas in the movie for example school.
Existing Product 2Story (brief Synopsis)
In the town of dairy in main, 7 kids are targeted
individually by a killer clown, this was originally a
book written by Stephen king and then in 1990 it
was created into a mini series that all added up
into a movie. This movie that was made terrified
children in the 90s setting a new standard of
horror. Now in 2017 a new release of the movie
comes out creating a new standard for horror
movie and scary the kids of today as it scared the
kids of the 90s, this movie is remake but it makes
everything a much darker tone and creepy. It sets a
incredibly disturbing mood for every with its
amazing scenes such as, ben Hanson in the library
getting chased by the clown, this scene in
particular is one of my favourites as in this scene it
plays a dark nursery rhymes before the chase
where ben is looking through a book on the towns
history and as he is reading in the background
pennywise is the librarian looking at him with a
sinister grin. The full story of it is a two parter and
this film is only part one of the film. The story to
the film is that the kids in this film are out casts
part of the losers club and a clown that feeds off
human flesh and fear starts to attack the kids of
this town he starts killing the children one by one
and the film opens with missing posters.
Throughout the film they realised that pennywise
the clown has been there since the beginning of
time and he goes and disappears and then every
27 years he comes out of hibernation with a
hunger for fear and flesh, the kids figure out the
way to beat him is to not be afraid and so they
decide to hunt down the clown and go on the
attack beating it, this ends part one with them as
the victors and the clown goes back into hiding,
part two that will be released in 2019 will have
pennywise return 27 years later.
Mise en scene
This DVD cover is a version of what I am going to
make, the scenery around the cover is dark and
pennywise the clown is covered with darkness this
symbolises how he is a dark character, its also
connotation that he is going to be the main villain
of the film, the little boy at the front (Georgie) is
also surrounded by the darkness this conotates
that he is the target and there is no hope for him
where as it denotates that he is being attacked by
the clown.
Type of image
This type of image is a DVD Cover that I am researching to help with my projects DVD Cover.
The location this was created in is warner bros studio and the setting is the town of dairy
main. The location this cover is a the dark road where Georgie looses his boat and gets killed
by pennywise. The angle of this image is a medium view of 3rd person perspective for Georgie
showing what he would see with him seeing it and that is pennywise appearing from the
background. This is penny wises arm covered in darkness and this represents how dark and
evil he is as a character. They use fading affects to darken the tone of the DVD Cover and this
affect so that it makes it clear that the overall tone of the movie is dark and is a connotation
of how dark the movie is. It is designed as a eye catching DVD cover using big red letters in a
horror font. Company logos down the middle of the double pages, on the back it has grids
with images from the film to show the different scenes.
Techniques
This DVD cover focuses on dark colours and this is because, it is using a contrast technique it
uses a bright red colour mixed with a dark black colour, this makes a good colour scheme and
reflects the book as the book is dark but also has light colours to represent characters for
example the antagonist is a colourful clown called pennywise that gives out red balloons. The
main villain is on both sides of the cover on the front he is in the dark barley visible all that is
visible is a hand that is giving Georgie a red balloon and then on the back cover he is at the
top left with his face clearly visible. The cover sticks to three main colours throughout the
cover these are white and black as well as red and I feel this colour scheme works as a
technique as it makes everything compact and work well together it’s a idea I can use in my
own work when producing the DVD cover. The template is the same as any other DVD cover
they have a synopsis on the back of the DVD cover this shows the brief story of the film
without giving anything away which is something that I feel I should have in my own work as
well. The synopsis is important as it doesn’t give anything away.
Audience appeal
This appeals to the audience on a whole because it is
creepy and eerie, it shows the main antagonist of the
film as pennywise through the majority of it and the
reason for this is because when people read the book
or watched the mini series it gained a name for itself
and pennywise became a renowned horror
character, this film is based off the same story and
character and so it has gone into detail in adding in
this character as the main feature of the cover,
poster and film, appealing to the audience and
fanbase around the character. This means that this
film DVD cover appeals to the fanbase of the book
and the mini series. The age rating of this film by the
BBFC is a 15 this Is due to the violence and gore in
the movie, even with this violence and gore the film
strays away from bad language which is why the film
is not a 18 rating. The phycographic that this film
appeals to is the horror/thriller genre, a classification
of people that are interested in gore and violence as
well as a strong story and character development,
this DVD Cover explores this phycographic with the
colour scheme of black, white and red. The
demographic of this film aims for a relatable
character style, this is because in this movie there are
children with different personality's giving every type
of person a character to follow in this movie. The
social class that this film is aiming at is a lower,
middle and higher class as it has a main character
that fits into each of this making it relatable to each
of them in characters. The gender this film aims for in
protagonists is both female and male as there is both
male and female protagonists and for antagonists its
both as the main villain is a shape shifter and doesn’t
have a gender but mainly takes the shape of a male
clown called pennywise. And as for story and film as
a whole it appeals to both because it is interesting to
watch and contain different colours and plot points
relatable to both. And as for DVD cover it appeals to
all the above because it is the same as the film using
the same imagery and colours and tone setting a
mood that would appeal to the above audience.
Why did I choose this?
I chose this product because of how I am making a
DVD cover and this DVD cover has the tone and
mood that I would like to set in my work. It has a
colour scheme that works really well which is an
aspect I feel I can use in my own work seeing how it
is done in this.
Existing Product 3
Product
This product is a company logo and is related to my
work because I want to add in my own company logos
into my trailer because I feel it is a nice addition to my
project and when I animate and add in different affects I
feel it can work really well. This product is taken from
the film harry potter and the deathly hallows part one,
the reason for this is because it’s a high budget film with
a massive audience, and when adding in the warner
bros company logo into the film at the begging they
wanted to make sure that the large audience would
remember the company that made it, and so I feel if I
want to take pointers from this and advance on the
style , such as the design of the logo how it looks
visually and also how its animated behind it, a similar
version of animation for this is from the dark knight
trilogy having a dark opening title to show that the film
is going to be dark, it is clever how it links together. This
product has a three dimensional affect which would be
something I can try and replicate when producing my
own company logos, I feel that this is important so that
it doesn’t make my work seem two dimensional.
Mise en scene
The post production ideas to this company logo was to
animate it in a dark and mysterious way and they have
done that here by making clouds around it and booming
electric noises. From the movie this symbolises the
villains as they travel in the same way turning
themselves in to dark clouds to fly and move. When
creating this background it was taking it into
consideration. This connotation on the logo shows that
it has a deeper meaning in connection to the plot.
Type of image
This image type is taken from the opening of a movie
and is a cg animated company logo. The company is
warner bros, this is the main company that made the
movie.
Why did I choose this?
I chose this version of the product because It is a big
brand company that sets a standard of how logos
should look and be animated in films, its also got
connotation and denotation as it links into to the film
with the tone and animation, I feel that there is a lot
that I can take from this when creating my own work
such as the tone, style font and mood of the animation.
Audience appeal
This appeals to the audience of warner bros movies because it uses its logo it has
had for years and keeps it, however they make it darker to create a new tone and
mood that isn’t seem in many other warner bros movies and this adds a creative
affect to it, setting the atmosphere and tone of the movie before the film starts
from this it is clear that the film is going to be dark. This also appeals to any age as
it doesn’t have a story it is a company logo and its not graphic nor does it contain
any violence within it. The phycographic for this company logo is one that is
interested in dark tone and setting a dark mood, it appeals to this audience
because of the dark imagery it also appeals to a mysterious phycographic because
of the mysterious tone to the logo represented by the clouds. The demographic to
this company logo is a neat and tidy type this is because of how the logo is very
well presented and classy, showing that the film is professional and big budgeted
which is a good start when appealing to audience, another part of the audience is
gender and social status which are both on applicable to this.
Techniques
This image uses different techniques to contrast the film it features in, the first
part of this is the clouds colour, at some parts of the clouds its dark and at other
parts it light coloured, the same can be said for the company logo light at some
parts and dark at others, then there are parts of the screen where its between
dark and light, as this company logo animates the darkness moves around the
screen growing at different points. The start shows that there is light in the movie
and parts of dark and as the animation shows the dark becoming overwhelming
this reflects the film as this is also what happens, this technique is foreshadowing
the tones and moods of the movie from the very start with the opening movie.
The company logo Is neat and well presented this represents the style of the film
showing that it is well presented as a film and well throughout. There main
technique is using colour scheme in the logo to reflect the movie it is the focus as
it creates the mood and tone for the film before it begins.
What I will use?
I will take the colour scheme of this and use it in my own
work because I feel that this overall look really suits the
style of film that I will be making, the logo itself is well
presented and I feel like this is a aspect of the product
that I can take and add into my own, the design will be
different for the log with a different company name and
set up but the cloud background and colours are nice
touch that I feel I should take advantage of in my work for
the final production for all three of my company logos
when I design them.
Post production
The production to this was simple, it was created after
the movie and added in when the film was complete,
which is a setup that I should follow in my own work, the
company logo is the same in everything but its
background, colour scheme and how it is animated is set
up when the film finishes, I took a week of production to
get the animation right for all the opening logos and
opening title once the film was complete they changed
the tone of all the logos and the mood to what the film
showed to give the audience the vibe of what they are in
for and to make sure it had a good contrast to the movie,
I will not have a week to make and animate company
logos as I can see from my schedule I will have to be more
careful with how long I spend on them and then making
Angle
There is just a straight look at this from eye view, this is to
easily show the logo so the audience isn’t confused to
what is being shown and can clearly see the logo and
remember it after watching the film and know what it is
associated with.
What it used for?
This company logo idea having them at the start and the
end of the film is to show the audience who made the
movie and what company it was, this is so after seeing
the film if you enjoy it you will associate the film with this
company logo and then when they bring out another film
that has this logo in it the audience will remember seeing
it in another film they liked and therefore be more
interested in the look of the new movies not related to
ones they have already watched. The other reason is it
advertises the company it looks nice and neat. These will
not be the reason for mine though the reason my short
film will have this is because it looks nice visually and can
give a good start to a film.

Story
The story of insidious starts off with a boy called Dolton who is the
main reason for all that happens to the family to his gift, but from
the begging. It starts with the family moving into a new house as
all horror films do start playing on the human instinct everyone
gets when they move somewhere unfamiliar that something is it
here going to go wrong or something is not right. Playing on tis
fear they bring an extremely unrealistic fear to reality which is a
clever technique to create realism in a unrealistic situation from
the get go of the film. The film follows the characters as there son
Dolton is sent into a coma that doctors cant explain and haven't
seen before. This is because his spirit has left his body and is
watching himself sleep until a demon snatches away his spirit. This
causes the family to try al different means in order to try and find
Dolton but all of them fail until they move to the farther (josh)
mums house (Renay) there they find a women that can help with
the situation as she has helped the family in the past with spirits
only the father couldn’t remember the encounter as this women
whipped his memory and she is called Elise. She speaks to Dolton
to find him and then send the farther in to a place that is called the
further, this is a world between worlds by world I mean the living
and the dead, in this place spirits are lost that couldn’t find the
way the heaven or there are spirits that are there because they
escaped form hell this entails demons that roam around this place
looking for people in the real world to posses. A demon takes
Dolton and his farther (josh) goes to save him and get him out of
the further, then he takes Dolton back to his body he gets caught
by the entity that attacked him as a boy and he forgot about then
when everyone sees josh as josh he is actually the women in the
black bridal dress and this leads to the women killing Elise and
leaving her corpse for everyone to see and then pretend to be josh
and film ends with this cliff hanger which drags you in to see the
next film.
Costume
Costumes for this film consist of casual clothing in this film but the
demon is dressed up taller then average humans plain pitch black
body with a red face and this symbolises his darkness from the
design of his character.
Props
There are numerous different props that vairy from phones to
pianos and it changes based on the scenarios and they had to plan
for certain things.
Tone
the tone of the trailer is light at first and then it gets darker and darker
throughout I feel that this symbolises the how dark the film is as whole and
the trailer doesn’t cheer up towards the end and this could reflect how the
film doesn’t actually have a happy ending. This is a good way to create a
tone and link into things that have hidden meanings. The tone is
mysterious as well although it is dark the other is all cloudy and mysterious
this represents how people don’t really know to understand the other that
well. The tone of the characters in the movie vary there are some that have
a hopeful tone and this shows which characters you can and cant trust they
show this tone by making the atmosphere of the scenes brighter when Elise
shows up as an example it’s a warm sunny day there's hope in the house
again she has light glimmering off her with the aff3ct and this creates a
hopeful tone and atmosphere on the character. Other characters like josh
as an example have a mixed feel of tone they switch from hopeful to dark
and that is because they are in danger a lot of the time in the movie. The
tone of the film overall gives a very eerie feeling to it.
Shots
This film uses a range of different shots to show different imagery and
symbolism in the film this varies from showing a character above another,
there is one scene in this trailer where it uses a medium shot on a photo to
show the outside view of what other people would see or the main
character but when the main character moves closer to the image and it
switches to a close up shot of the film that is when it stands out that there's
something hiding in the image. Shots are also important as it places
characters in different spots of the camera and this is because it shows if
they are opposite to each other on the 3 by 3 grid.
Mise en scene
The post production of insidious, it had a year before it was put into
production it spent a full year in production where the story board was
mapped for 9 hours of footage, they prepared the sets for each part on the
story board even for footage that they didn’t use, normally a film would
need a large budget to create so many different sets but insidious one was
based in a house and a place called the other therefore it didn’t need a lot
of sets to be created for it the main part of planning all came down finding
a house that they would be able to film all of if not the majority of scenes in
which is the house that they chose for the film and then all that they
needed to do was to get the cinematography to a great standard and
prepare each shot out so they know exactly what they are going to film and
where they are going to film it, this is important because it shows the in the
movie when shots resemble different ideas and represent the films story, it
shows the pre production and planning and adds connotation to scenes
which is deeper meanings.
Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
• The researched products all have denotation and connotation, what this means is all the products that I have researched have a basic easy to see meaning and then if you look closer they
also have a deeper meaning which links and resembles the plotline to film that it is based off this can be scene in the poster, DVD over, company logo and in the insidious trailer all parts
have denotation and then connotation showing that each is clever and contain this and so it is an aspect that I shall have to add into my work when I am creating them. Another common
feature that appears in all of them is tone, each one of these product has a tone set and the tone that these give off is the tone that the movie also gives off this links to the connotation
aspects of each individual aspect but it is a common feature, none of the tones are misleading to the film all of them resemble the films that they are set for tone well. Another common
feature that they have is colour imagery, all of the these are from different products and are not related except for genre and this genre is horror/ thriller movies and I feel that acclimates
that there are different films but because of the genre they follow almost like a guide line of colour schemes it is true that the colour schemes for each help connotate the film by hinting
at different moods and tones but it also noticeably clear that they all follow a black and grey colour scheme and I think that this is something I should take into account when I am
designing my work. Another common feature is mood each of these products have a similar if not the same mood and this is the mood of a horror /thriller movie, this mood is set by
each in a poster and DVD cover for example because it is needed to connotate the film it is about and the mood of the film so from the cover or poster of a movie the audience is able to
tell straight away what they are going to be seeing at the cinema if they where to see it just from the mood. Fonts are also a common feature and the fonts also help connotates the mood
and tone of the film, the fonts for the DVD and poster and even in the company logo the fonts help connotate different things for example the font on the company logo represents the
company as its bold and it makes it seem like it is bold company this resemblance is a technique that that is commonly found in these things. Another common feature between trailers
and other trailers in horror/ thriller movies is how the film is added up into lighting of the different scenes to create a horror or thriller atmosphere they will add glow to a certain
character in order to symbolise how they are a character of hope. This mise en scene is a common feature for how all of them follow the same type of structure for how they was put into
pre production and story boarding scene by scene. Another common feature is how they all aim for audience appeal and aiming at the audience that entails the horror genre and they do
this by including certain colour schemes and lighting as well as mood tone and music to make sure that it fits the criteria for a horror movie. Another common feature is there BBFC
classification for each of these films it ranges from 12 to 15 which is most likely the common age to aim at when making a horror movie.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your own production work?
• The first aspect from these similar existing products that I am going to use is the fonts as I feel that they are set up and made to look creepy in a strange art style and I feel that this set ups
a eerie feel for the horror movie nd the art style for fonts like insidious can help foreshadow the tone and mood of the film and so I feel that I should include this in my poster and DVD
cover as well as company logos because the foreshadowing is a nice feature that I feel that I should replicate in my own work. Another aspect that I would take is how they prepare for a
movie, I will not have enough time to complete the full mise en scene preparation but I will take the idea on board of storyboarding and shortlisting my work to make sure that it is all set
up to a good standard and I have it all planned out. Another aspect of the similar existing products that I will take into my own work is the colour scheme because I feel that this is very
important all of these similar existing products is they are in the same genre the same genre that I am going to aim for and the colour scheme that they all use is the same and this colour
scheme helps connotate the mood of the film and the tone of the film just by being in the movie which I think is important part of the project, having a colour scheme that reflects the
tone and mood setting of the film. Another aspect of the similar existing products I want to use in my own production is the mood that Is set in all of these pieces as I feel that tis sets an
important mood to the audience about the film before they go and see it on the posters and DVD covers. The same mood is shown in the company logo and then the trailer and I want to
have this feeling in my movie. Another aspect that I want to include in my work from these similar existing products is the tone, the tone is an important part of all of these products
because it helps determine what the movie will be like and if it is worth watching. The final part of the work that I will be aiming for is audience appeal of all these products, these similar
existing products have various different techniques from tone to mood to font that help determine the if it will sell to the audience and by taking these techniques I should also be able to
appeal to the audience.
Questionnaire Analysis
Audience research
• Observation: this tells me that I have a strong mix of genders in my survey this shows that out of the 72 people that took my survey 51.39% where make and 44.44%
where female and 4.17% where other this shows me that the answers to this survey will be mixed and equally split out responses from a mixed male and female
audience and this means that any responses that I get will be applicable to the target audience of both male and female.
• What this says about my audience: this says that my audience is split between the majority of male and female genders. And this says that any results that I get from
other questions in this questionnaire will be aimed at a audience that is both male and female and fairly mixed however, there is more males that answered my
survey so I will have to take that into account with all the responses I received in my survey when later appealing to my audience.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience because it will be aimed at a male and female audience but it will also be
aimed more as a male audience and this is because the film will be a mysterious and dark film and dark is more associated at a male audience as shown by the
secondary research and so this shows me that my product will appeal to thisaudience.
Audience research
• Observation: the majority of my age is aged 17 years but it also has a lot of people that are 16 years of age and there is a smaller number of people that are aged
from 18+ . Out of the 72 people that answered this question36.99% of them where 16 years of age when taking this survey. 46.58% of the people that answered this
survey where aged 17 years old. 16.44% of people that took this survey where 18+ in age and this shows that I have the majority of age between 16 to 17 as my
audience for the questions on this survey.
• What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience has range that vairy between the years of 16 to 17 with the small exception of few people that are
aged above that and this tells me that my audience is young and this means that I cant have my product to be violent and have lost of bad language as I need the film
to fit into the BBFC classification in order for this audience to actually have the ability to watch the short film.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience for a number of reasons, to start with it will appeal because it will not have a
large amount of gore and violence and so it will fit under the correct BBFC classification for this audience to watch, secondly the main characters will be of the same
age making it relatable to all of these age groups hence appealing to this audience.
Audience research
• Observation: this shows that there are different thoughts on how long people expected a short film to be, this shows me that there can be a short film of any length
between 2 to 5 minutes and it will appeal to the audience, the split between the in of 2 to 3 minutes and 4 to 5 minutes means that I have to split it down the middle
in order to appeal to both the best that I can.
• What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience has split idea of how long a short film should be, it says that some people have a possible smaller
attention span then others, for example people that wanted 5 to 6 minutes wont have that high of an attention span because of the willingness to sit through a long
short film where as the middle marking or 4 to 5 which is the normal time for a short film has the biggest audience and people like this because it gives people just
enough time to enjoy a short film and not loose attention to it. And it says that the people that chose the 2 to 3 minutes of short film are those that are less
interested in sitting through a long duration prefer something short, sweet and to the point.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience as it will be between 3 to 4 minutes long this appeals between the majority
vote of how long a film should be appealing to people that want it to be 2 to 3 minutes and also people that want it to be 4 to 5 minutes and so I will be able to keep
my audience.
Audience research
• Observation: this tells me that the majority of people like there characters to relatable when watching a film, this is because its easier to enjoy a characters
development if you want to be them for example or you feel you can relate to them in some way this is something a film tries to get out of each of its characters and
some characters have multiple characters with this is to create lots of personality's in one film and this is so they can appeal to a large demographic of people in one
film creating a character for everyone that all different groups of people can relate to and as shown by this survey answer it is clear that the majority of people prefer
there characters to be relatable and 21.92% of people don’t like them to be relatable.
• What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience want to be able to relate to the characters and feel like they could put them selves in the same
scenarios as in the film and act it out the same as my secondary research proves people much prefer it when they can feel like they are the character of the film and
so it is my gaol to appeal to this audience it also says that there is a minority of people that do not like the characters to be relatable.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience because my product will be aimed at multiple demographics that have lots of
different personalities but the main character will fit a phycographic and demographic of a lot of people and this will mean that I will appeal to my audience with my
product as the majority of people wanted to have a relatable character and by doing this I will appeal to this audience.
Audience research
• Observation: this tells me which of my audience has a knowledge of film and TV pop culture, the reason that I ask this question is because I feel it is important that I
get an understanding when making reference to different pop culture in my movie then they would be able to understand the references and in turn I can appeal to
this audience as a whole. The majority of people have either some or a lot with 46.58 % of people having some knowledge on the subject of pop culture in film and tv
and 15.07% this means that 61.65% of people have either some or a lot and 38% of people don’t have any knowledge on it at all which means that I will appeal to the
majority of my audience.
• what this says about my audience: this tells me that the majority of my audience are interested in pop culture in film and tv and this shows that I can appeal to my
audience well by including this type if references and similar content in my own short film I think it will work well because it tells me that my audience is interested in
what I intend to put forward in my short film.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: it will appeal to this audience because my movie will have pop culture references included in it as well as different film
shot types that are mostly seen in pop culture movies and since the majority of my audience has some or a lot of knowledge it should be good a good start to have
this in the short film in order to appeal to them.
Audience research
• Observation: out of all of the answers that I received from this question it was clear the majority of people ranged from liking the complex plotlines to not liking the
complex plotlines but the majority of people from the answers that I got agreed that they much preferred to have complex plotlines and from this I was able to tell
that I could.
• What this says about my audience: this says that my audience had mixed views on weather they wanted to have a complex plotline or if they actually wanted it to be
mainly aimed and focused around a simplistic plot that doesn’t take to much to understand and is just easy and relaxing, it says that there is a split and this split
shows that if I have a complex plot I will have half an audience that will like it for a complex plot and half an audience that will dislike it for that reason which shows
that no matter what I choose to do I will have an audience.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to half of the audience because of the fact that I will be making a simplistic yet complex plot,
by this I mean that the plot will be easy to understand for someone watching which provides audience appeal to those that didn’t want a complex plot but there will
be a deeper meaning and lore that you will have to pay attention to in order to understand it.
Audience research
• Observation: this tells me that the majority of people like a mix between light and dark toned films and don’t like one or the other and by liking both they give mixed
option which means that I can create a dark tone while having light toned comments and conversations in the trailer this brings in the different aspects of tone into
the short film that I will make. 12.33% of people prefer a dark tone, which is something that I prefer but there is more of an audience for light tones films with a
27.40% but there is a 60.27% of people want mixed which shows me where the majority of my audience is and this shows me what I should aim for in project and my
secondary research also shows this.
• What this says about my audience: this tells me that the audience that I have aimed at is into both dark toned and light toned in this shows me that I have to make
my work both light and dark toned in the short film and this will create a great set up for a movie because the character can bring great characteristics to the
character development having him light toned in a dark situation and this says that my audience will like this product as it has a good set up.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: this will appeal to my audience because I have both a dark and light tone in the short film my example of this is that
everything happening in the movie like scenarios will be dark toned but the character in the movie will be light toned.
Audience research
• Observation: in this section I asked people what they thought favourite horror movie would be and I got lots of responses and a lot of the responses that I received
for this was pretty much the same, people said either insidious, the conjuring, saw and paranormal activity there was some different choices like ringu the Japanese
version of the ring and then there was the ring which was a different version of the ring. All of these choices are real horror films which surprised me because a lot of
people chose in the previous question light tone other dark tone but all of the films given in this part of the survey where that of the choices where all serious full on
dark toned films.
• What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience has a long line of people that are interested in horror films that are the most renowned for example
big blockbuster horror films instead of watching more indi horror movies but this tells me that this audience will be more used to the generic horror film sounds and
jump scares so if I was to follow the same structure it would appeal to this audience.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience because I am aiming at a audience that is interested In horror movies with
story like the conjuring and insidious and so I feel that I will appeal to my audience by aiming at this exact type of people.
Audience research
• Observation: this response says that the majority of people do not want this film to be found footage which is surprising because I felt like form the secondary
research I made the hunch that there would be more people that where interested in found footage horror movies and so I found this surprising that this was the
outcome. However it would appear that 24.66% of people have like the idea and 76.34% don’t like the idea.
• What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience is not interested in having found footage as part of a short film and would prefer to have short film
and it shows me that there is a lot of people in my audience that don’t want me to use found footage and I I was to use this found footage then this would mean that
to appeal to my audience I would have to stop my plan for found footage.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: my product would not have appealed to this audience because I was going to make my short film to be found footage for some of it
just because at college it is something easier to do, but not I will change this and not make a found footage short film so that I am able to appeal to this audience.
Audience research
• Observation: this question is where I inquired as to how people wanted the music in the film to be, for example dramatic or low toned in music and what I mean by
this is that I wanted to ask if the music in films should be really lowed and deahtning when something big happens or weather it should be very low toned light music
that creepy and not to loud, I ask because horror films uses a large mix of the two and in response I got to see that my audience much preferred a low tone style an
example of a film with this is the insidious series which links back to answers from a previous question where a lot of people chose to have insidious as the favourite
horror movie. 68.49% of people prefer low toned where as 31.51 of people prefer the film to be high toned showing that the majority of people prefer the film to be
low toned.
• What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience is more interested in low toned music and this mean that when appealing to my audience I will
need my music to be low toned and dark creating an eerie feel, thanks to this question I'm now able to see what my audience would prefer in a short film.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to the audience on this aspect because I am going to make it so that my short film has a creepy
low toned soundtrack throughout, this means that I will appeal to 68.49 % of my audience but there will also be scenes in the movie where it goes dramatic for a
moment to enthesis the power of that scene. This will appeal to the remainder of my audience there for I should be able to appease about 89% of them.
Interviews
Interview 1
• What type of music would you prefer to see in a short film that is a horror/thriller? I like the music to be really dramatic and loud so it brings me into the film that I am watching.
• Do you like complicated films that have a complex plotline or films that are easy to understand? I love complicated films because they keep me interested and give me reason to watch it
more then once.
• What is your favourite horror movie and why? My favourite horror film is saw because of all the violence and gore that is in the movie
• Do you like to have a character in a film that is relatable to you? Yes I do but I'm not really that fused if they are or aren’t I just care about the story.
• How long would you expect a short film to be and why? I expect a short film to be around 10 to 11 minutes so it has time to interest me and develop different characters.
Interview 1
• Observation: this interviewee is prefers dramatic and loud music over low toned music because they feel that this immerses them in the film more because of the music if its dramatic
brings more atmosphere to it also these believe. I think that there should be a much lower tone to the short film. This person also really enjoys complicated plotlines because they feel
that if they watch a film that’s complicated they can watch the film twice so it gives them reason to watch it again and the reason that they would watch it again I can guess is to really
understand what is happening in the film. This persons favourite horror film is saw and the reason for this is because they feel that the gore and violence in this movie is what keeps
everything interesting. This person does like characters to be relatable but doesn’t care if the characters are relatable because they are more interested in the story to the film rather
then the characters. This person expects to have a short film that is 10 to 11 minutes long.
• What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience is interested in long short films that are the same size as usual long short films would be this says that this person likes
to watch long movies and knows that some short films can be from 10 to 11 minutes long as well as 4 to 5 minutes which gives some insight as to how my short film should be as I don’t
want it to be to long. This also tells me that the horror films he is into are ones that have plot and lots of gore and violence so for my project to appeal to this audience I would have to
make it so that the film has a good plot but is also clever in how it plays out and has lots of gore and violence in order to make this interviewee happy.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience because the plotline wont be simply it would be complex and take time to fully understand but it
would also have a simplistic story that anyone could understand so the hidden lore is what needs watching again and I feel this would appeal to the audience.
Interview 2
• What type of music would you prefer to see in a short film that is a horror/thriller? I prefer to have mix of both in a film because I think it can work well when there is
a good mix in a movie to raise the atmosphere in the film.
• Do you like complicated films that have a complex plotline or films that are easy to understand? I like films when they are complicated but I prefer it when films are
more easy to understand when they are a horror because I want jump scares not plot.
• What is your favourite horror movie and why? My favourite horror film is insidious because of the dramatic music that plays in horror scenes and plot twists and I
prefer the calm low toned music that plays in the creepy scenes of this movie.
• Do you like to have a character in a film that is relatable to you? Yes I like it when a character in a movie is relatable, I prefer it when the main character is relatable to
me as It gives me more reason to watch it.
• How long would you expect a short film to be and why? I would expect a short film to be about 3 to 4 minutes long because this is enough time to fit in a short story
with a good plot and isn’t to dragged on in time.
Interview 2
• Observation: the first question that I asked was if the music in a film should be dramatic or low toned and the response was the music should be a mix of both and the reason given was
that it would be better for different scenes as some scenarios are made better with dramatic scenes and some scenes need a low toned soundtrack to enthesis it and make it better. The
next question that I asked is if they liked complicated plotlines or not and the response that I got from this is that they do like complicated plots but the prefer films to be simple and easy
to understand. The third question that I asked is what there favourite horror film is and why the answer that I got in response to this was that they like insidious the best and this is
because it has plot but it also has good music and jump scares throughout the movie. The second question that I asked is if characters should be relatable and the answer received stated
that they prefer it when the main character to a movie is relatable because they find it more watchable. I then asked how long they would expect a short film to be and the answer was
that it should be between 3 to 4 minutes this is because they want a film to be short so they don’t loose interest if its to long. All this on a whole tells me that the person that I am asking
is into a mix of dramatic movies in short films that are between 3 to 4 minutes and the main character should be relatable to most people in order to appeal to this audience.
• What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience is interested in short films that are not to long and range between the time of 3 minutes or 4 minutes and this is
because my audience feels that they are given an amount of time between this period of film to not loose interest in what they are watching, they feel the plot should not be complicated
and easy to understand and also that the main character should be relatable to them.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: my short film will appeal to this audience because my short film will be estimated at 3 to 4 minutes long and short without a complex
difficult to understand plotline, and the main character will be an average person and because of this I feel I will appeal to the audience of this as he will be relatable to the audience. The
music in the short film wil switch from a light toned music to dramatic for different scenes which appeals to this audience as it is a mix of both.

Dark Clown Horror

  • 2. Existing Product 1Story (Brief synopsis) The story of the conjuring two in short. The story behind this at first follows two plot line. The first plot focuses on a family that live in a house that they recently moved into it is based on the ‘true story’ of Enfield Lane which is still renowned for the story that happened there and is a tourists attraction. This house is haunted by different demons, this family has a mum and her children, in the house one girl in particular starts getting haunted by the spirit of a old man who lived in the house that they are now living in, the man targets the girl when she is sleeping and when she home and alone, this starts by invading her bedroom on a night and telling her to leave his house : “This is my house!” this leads the family into depression with no one believing them on the house being haunted. Whi8le this is happening the sub plot is that of the Warren family a couple of demon hunters so to speak, they have a subplot story where Lauren warren is visited by a demon nun who comes to show her a vision of her husband dying and her daughter been kidnapped. Back to the main plot the main characters phone the police and the police come over to discover that there is strange things happening. An interviewer comes from a public paper to record an interview, in this interview they recorded the voice of the old man talking through the girls voice. The police contact the church and send this recording to the church asking for help. The church then contact the warrens and send them to the house, this leads the subplot into the main plot and brings everything together, the ending leads to the demon nun from the subplot being the main antagonist and that the demon was controlling the old man from the beginning and the nun was sowing the death of her husband to warm the warrens to stay away from the house. In the end the warrens realize the old man was being used and the nun. They are able to fix the problem save the day and the family after a traumatic experience and all end well. The house is still there today and it ends with images of the real family from the conjuring and playing the real footage and recordings they caught rom the house in the time it was set. Mise en scene This film was made by warner bros studios and Rat Pac dune entertainment as well as new line cinema. It was released on the 10th of June 2016. the production started a year before in 2015 after the first film the conjuring released in 2013 it had 2 years of planning before production which is more then a lot of other movies get. They filmed the movie in a variety of different places and used different cameras for different scenes they had to work on special affects as well as cg. The story of Enfield Lane had to be researched and permission needed to be able to find locations to film if its filmed in the actual house. And create a replica of the house to the inside and exact look would have to be mapped. Audience appeal this product appeals to its audience by creating a mystery shrouded poster to advertise the film. The antagonist nun shown on the right of the screen is a showing a horrifying villain, this villain is there for audience appeal as people are more likely to pay attention to a product if it has a creepy feature, the nun is also shrouded by darkness this means you have to really look at the camera, its clever because you don’t see it at first but once you see it, its always there. This type of feature appeals to the audience because of how the entire poster brings a sinister tone and style to it. This film appeals to a male and female audience because the two hero's/protagonists in the movie are male and female, this gives people relatable characters and so it appeals to both genders. This film has an age rating of 15 years by the BBFC this is because it has dark tones and violent scenes with some bad language and gore. This product appeals to a horror/ thriller psychographic of people. Why did I choose this? I chose this movie because of how it helped shape my expectations of what a horror film should be and how the plot should work, it was difficult to choose if I wanted to have a insidious movie of a conjuring movie. I felt it had a lot of suspenseful camera shots and music that I could take inspiration from, as well as plotline and how the subplot links into the story a nice idea that could be used in my short film. What have I learned from this? I have learned how different parts of in studio lighting look on the poster and how they use different colours to connate deeper meanings to there poster. I have also learned how different camera shots build more tension when it follows the main character from there perspective because when they get scared you also get scared by jumpy parts of the movie I also learnt how different drops in music can set new atmospheres and create a different tone which is an aspect that I will be taking into my own work when I make my production experiments and my production. Post production This poster was designed to show light around the main character, they looked hard to find a way to get the perfect cast to play the characters that appear in historical pictures and getting the cast choice to fit into the film and act them in a way that is realistic to what is happening around them. Making sure that the cinematography is working in the movie and standing out as a well produce film. This movie would have needed to create story boards for the planning and the sets to the movie would have had to of being created for each scene of the movie dependent on when it was filmed and how big the budget was. Techniques The techniques in the poster start with the light at the window, the window is bright and the girl covers the light and this represents that there is hope for her, the religious cross in the poster, this sets the tone of the movie because it makes it out as a spiritual movie. The dark character of the movie the antagonist is in the right side of the poster hiding in the background and this shows the villain of the movie an evil nun adding more religious imagery and it also represents how evil the character is as there is no light around it only darkness. Type of image This was set up and filmed in warner bros studios, when making the conjuring 2 they visited the Enfield house and made noted of exactly how it looked and re created it the studio with different features making it look exactly like the house from the 70s. They use different angles on the movie to show how they use birds eye views to open up different areas in the movie for example school.
  • 3. Existing Product 2Story (brief Synopsis) In the town of dairy in main, 7 kids are targeted individually by a killer clown, this was originally a book written by Stephen king and then in 1990 it was created into a mini series that all added up into a movie. This movie that was made terrified children in the 90s setting a new standard of horror. Now in 2017 a new release of the movie comes out creating a new standard for horror movie and scary the kids of today as it scared the kids of the 90s, this movie is remake but it makes everything a much darker tone and creepy. It sets a incredibly disturbing mood for every with its amazing scenes such as, ben Hanson in the library getting chased by the clown, this scene in particular is one of my favourites as in this scene it plays a dark nursery rhymes before the chase where ben is looking through a book on the towns history and as he is reading in the background pennywise is the librarian looking at him with a sinister grin. The full story of it is a two parter and this film is only part one of the film. The story to the film is that the kids in this film are out casts part of the losers club and a clown that feeds off human flesh and fear starts to attack the kids of this town he starts killing the children one by one and the film opens with missing posters. Throughout the film they realised that pennywise the clown has been there since the beginning of time and he goes and disappears and then every 27 years he comes out of hibernation with a hunger for fear and flesh, the kids figure out the way to beat him is to not be afraid and so they decide to hunt down the clown and go on the attack beating it, this ends part one with them as the victors and the clown goes back into hiding, part two that will be released in 2019 will have pennywise return 27 years later. Mise en scene This DVD cover is a version of what I am going to make, the scenery around the cover is dark and pennywise the clown is covered with darkness this symbolises how he is a dark character, its also connotation that he is going to be the main villain of the film, the little boy at the front (Georgie) is also surrounded by the darkness this conotates that he is the target and there is no hope for him where as it denotates that he is being attacked by the clown. Type of image This type of image is a DVD Cover that I am researching to help with my projects DVD Cover. The location this was created in is warner bros studio and the setting is the town of dairy main. The location this cover is a the dark road where Georgie looses his boat and gets killed by pennywise. The angle of this image is a medium view of 3rd person perspective for Georgie showing what he would see with him seeing it and that is pennywise appearing from the background. This is penny wises arm covered in darkness and this represents how dark and evil he is as a character. They use fading affects to darken the tone of the DVD Cover and this affect so that it makes it clear that the overall tone of the movie is dark and is a connotation of how dark the movie is. It is designed as a eye catching DVD cover using big red letters in a horror font. Company logos down the middle of the double pages, on the back it has grids with images from the film to show the different scenes. Techniques This DVD cover focuses on dark colours and this is because, it is using a contrast technique it uses a bright red colour mixed with a dark black colour, this makes a good colour scheme and reflects the book as the book is dark but also has light colours to represent characters for example the antagonist is a colourful clown called pennywise that gives out red balloons. The main villain is on both sides of the cover on the front he is in the dark barley visible all that is visible is a hand that is giving Georgie a red balloon and then on the back cover he is at the top left with his face clearly visible. The cover sticks to three main colours throughout the cover these are white and black as well as red and I feel this colour scheme works as a technique as it makes everything compact and work well together it’s a idea I can use in my own work when producing the DVD cover. The template is the same as any other DVD cover they have a synopsis on the back of the DVD cover this shows the brief story of the film without giving anything away which is something that I feel I should have in my own work as well. The synopsis is important as it doesn’t give anything away. Audience appeal This appeals to the audience on a whole because it is creepy and eerie, it shows the main antagonist of the film as pennywise through the majority of it and the reason for this is because when people read the book or watched the mini series it gained a name for itself and pennywise became a renowned horror character, this film is based off the same story and character and so it has gone into detail in adding in this character as the main feature of the cover, poster and film, appealing to the audience and fanbase around the character. This means that this film DVD cover appeals to the fanbase of the book and the mini series. The age rating of this film by the BBFC is a 15 this Is due to the violence and gore in the movie, even with this violence and gore the film strays away from bad language which is why the film is not a 18 rating. The phycographic that this film appeals to is the horror/thriller genre, a classification of people that are interested in gore and violence as well as a strong story and character development, this DVD Cover explores this phycographic with the colour scheme of black, white and red. The demographic of this film aims for a relatable character style, this is because in this movie there are children with different personality's giving every type of person a character to follow in this movie. The social class that this film is aiming at is a lower, middle and higher class as it has a main character that fits into each of this making it relatable to each of them in characters. The gender this film aims for in protagonists is both female and male as there is both male and female protagonists and for antagonists its both as the main villain is a shape shifter and doesn’t have a gender but mainly takes the shape of a male clown called pennywise. And as for story and film as a whole it appeals to both because it is interesting to watch and contain different colours and plot points relatable to both. And as for DVD cover it appeals to all the above because it is the same as the film using the same imagery and colours and tone setting a mood that would appeal to the above audience. Why did I choose this? I chose this product because of how I am making a DVD cover and this DVD cover has the tone and mood that I would like to set in my work. It has a colour scheme that works really well which is an aspect I feel I can use in my own work seeing how it is done in this.
  • 4. Existing Product 3 Product This product is a company logo and is related to my work because I want to add in my own company logos into my trailer because I feel it is a nice addition to my project and when I animate and add in different affects I feel it can work really well. This product is taken from the film harry potter and the deathly hallows part one, the reason for this is because it’s a high budget film with a massive audience, and when adding in the warner bros company logo into the film at the begging they wanted to make sure that the large audience would remember the company that made it, and so I feel if I want to take pointers from this and advance on the style , such as the design of the logo how it looks visually and also how its animated behind it, a similar version of animation for this is from the dark knight trilogy having a dark opening title to show that the film is going to be dark, it is clever how it links together. This product has a three dimensional affect which would be something I can try and replicate when producing my own company logos, I feel that this is important so that it doesn’t make my work seem two dimensional. Mise en scene The post production ideas to this company logo was to animate it in a dark and mysterious way and they have done that here by making clouds around it and booming electric noises. From the movie this symbolises the villains as they travel in the same way turning themselves in to dark clouds to fly and move. When creating this background it was taking it into consideration. This connotation on the logo shows that it has a deeper meaning in connection to the plot. Type of image This image type is taken from the opening of a movie and is a cg animated company logo. The company is warner bros, this is the main company that made the movie. Why did I choose this? I chose this version of the product because It is a big brand company that sets a standard of how logos should look and be animated in films, its also got connotation and denotation as it links into to the film with the tone and animation, I feel that there is a lot that I can take from this when creating my own work such as the tone, style font and mood of the animation. Audience appeal This appeals to the audience of warner bros movies because it uses its logo it has had for years and keeps it, however they make it darker to create a new tone and mood that isn’t seem in many other warner bros movies and this adds a creative affect to it, setting the atmosphere and tone of the movie before the film starts from this it is clear that the film is going to be dark. This also appeals to any age as it doesn’t have a story it is a company logo and its not graphic nor does it contain any violence within it. The phycographic for this company logo is one that is interested in dark tone and setting a dark mood, it appeals to this audience because of the dark imagery it also appeals to a mysterious phycographic because of the mysterious tone to the logo represented by the clouds. The demographic to this company logo is a neat and tidy type this is because of how the logo is very well presented and classy, showing that the film is professional and big budgeted which is a good start when appealing to audience, another part of the audience is gender and social status which are both on applicable to this. Techniques This image uses different techniques to contrast the film it features in, the first part of this is the clouds colour, at some parts of the clouds its dark and at other parts it light coloured, the same can be said for the company logo light at some parts and dark at others, then there are parts of the screen where its between dark and light, as this company logo animates the darkness moves around the screen growing at different points. The start shows that there is light in the movie and parts of dark and as the animation shows the dark becoming overwhelming this reflects the film as this is also what happens, this technique is foreshadowing the tones and moods of the movie from the very start with the opening movie. The company logo Is neat and well presented this represents the style of the film showing that it is well presented as a film and well throughout. There main technique is using colour scheme in the logo to reflect the movie it is the focus as it creates the mood and tone for the film before it begins. What I will use? I will take the colour scheme of this and use it in my own work because I feel that this overall look really suits the style of film that I will be making, the logo itself is well presented and I feel like this is a aspect of the product that I can take and add into my own, the design will be different for the log with a different company name and set up but the cloud background and colours are nice touch that I feel I should take advantage of in my work for the final production for all three of my company logos when I design them. Post production The production to this was simple, it was created after the movie and added in when the film was complete, which is a setup that I should follow in my own work, the company logo is the same in everything but its background, colour scheme and how it is animated is set up when the film finishes, I took a week of production to get the animation right for all the opening logos and opening title once the film was complete they changed the tone of all the logos and the mood to what the film showed to give the audience the vibe of what they are in for and to make sure it had a good contrast to the movie, I will not have a week to make and animate company logos as I can see from my schedule I will have to be more careful with how long I spend on them and then making Angle There is just a straight look at this from eye view, this is to easily show the logo so the audience isn’t confused to what is being shown and can clearly see the logo and remember it after watching the film and know what it is associated with. What it used for? This company logo idea having them at the start and the end of the film is to show the audience who made the movie and what company it was, this is so after seeing the film if you enjoy it you will associate the film with this company logo and then when they bring out another film that has this logo in it the audience will remember seeing it in another film they liked and therefore be more interested in the look of the new movies not related to ones they have already watched. The other reason is it advertises the company it looks nice and neat. These will not be the reason for mine though the reason my short film will have this is because it looks nice visually and can give a good start to a film.
  • 5. Existing Product 4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuZnRUco Wos Story The story of insidious starts off with a boy called Dolton who is the main reason for all that happens to the family to his gift, but from the begging. It starts with the family moving into a new house as all horror films do start playing on the human instinct everyone gets when they move somewhere unfamiliar that something is it here going to go wrong or something is not right. Playing on tis fear they bring an extremely unrealistic fear to reality which is a clever technique to create realism in a unrealistic situation from the get go of the film. The film follows the characters as there son Dolton is sent into a coma that doctors cant explain and haven't seen before. This is because his spirit has left his body and is watching himself sleep until a demon snatches away his spirit. This causes the family to try al different means in order to try and find Dolton but all of them fail until they move to the farther (josh) mums house (Renay) there they find a women that can help with the situation as she has helped the family in the past with spirits only the father couldn’t remember the encounter as this women whipped his memory and she is called Elise. She speaks to Dolton to find him and then send the farther in to a place that is called the further, this is a world between worlds by world I mean the living and the dead, in this place spirits are lost that couldn’t find the way the heaven or there are spirits that are there because they escaped form hell this entails demons that roam around this place looking for people in the real world to posses. A demon takes Dolton and his farther (josh) goes to save him and get him out of the further, then he takes Dolton back to his body he gets caught by the entity that attacked him as a boy and he forgot about then when everyone sees josh as josh he is actually the women in the black bridal dress and this leads to the women killing Elise and leaving her corpse for everyone to see and then pretend to be josh and film ends with this cliff hanger which drags you in to see the next film. Costume Costumes for this film consist of casual clothing in this film but the demon is dressed up taller then average humans plain pitch black body with a red face and this symbolises his darkness from the design of his character. Props There are numerous different props that vairy from phones to pianos and it changes based on the scenarios and they had to plan for certain things. Tone the tone of the trailer is light at first and then it gets darker and darker throughout I feel that this symbolises the how dark the film is as whole and the trailer doesn’t cheer up towards the end and this could reflect how the film doesn’t actually have a happy ending. This is a good way to create a tone and link into things that have hidden meanings. The tone is mysterious as well although it is dark the other is all cloudy and mysterious this represents how people don’t really know to understand the other that well. The tone of the characters in the movie vary there are some that have a hopeful tone and this shows which characters you can and cant trust they show this tone by making the atmosphere of the scenes brighter when Elise shows up as an example it’s a warm sunny day there's hope in the house again she has light glimmering off her with the aff3ct and this creates a hopeful tone and atmosphere on the character. Other characters like josh as an example have a mixed feel of tone they switch from hopeful to dark and that is because they are in danger a lot of the time in the movie. The tone of the film overall gives a very eerie feeling to it. Shots This film uses a range of different shots to show different imagery and symbolism in the film this varies from showing a character above another, there is one scene in this trailer where it uses a medium shot on a photo to show the outside view of what other people would see or the main character but when the main character moves closer to the image and it switches to a close up shot of the film that is when it stands out that there's something hiding in the image. Shots are also important as it places characters in different spots of the camera and this is because it shows if they are opposite to each other on the 3 by 3 grid. Mise en scene The post production of insidious, it had a year before it was put into production it spent a full year in production where the story board was mapped for 9 hours of footage, they prepared the sets for each part on the story board even for footage that they didn’t use, normally a film would need a large budget to create so many different sets but insidious one was based in a house and a place called the other therefore it didn’t need a lot of sets to be created for it the main part of planning all came down finding a house that they would be able to film all of if not the majority of scenes in which is the house that they chose for the film and then all that they needed to do was to get the cinematography to a great standard and prepare each shot out so they know exactly what they are going to film and where they are going to film it, this is important because it shows the in the movie when shots resemble different ideas and represent the films story, it shows the pre production and planning and adds connotation to scenes which is deeper meanings.
  • 6. Research Analysis • What common features do the researched products have? • The researched products all have denotation and connotation, what this means is all the products that I have researched have a basic easy to see meaning and then if you look closer they also have a deeper meaning which links and resembles the plotline to film that it is based off this can be scene in the poster, DVD over, company logo and in the insidious trailer all parts have denotation and then connotation showing that each is clever and contain this and so it is an aspect that I shall have to add into my work when I am creating them. Another common feature that appears in all of them is tone, each one of these product has a tone set and the tone that these give off is the tone that the movie also gives off this links to the connotation aspects of each individual aspect but it is a common feature, none of the tones are misleading to the film all of them resemble the films that they are set for tone well. Another common feature that they have is colour imagery, all of the these are from different products and are not related except for genre and this genre is horror/ thriller movies and I feel that acclimates that there are different films but because of the genre they follow almost like a guide line of colour schemes it is true that the colour schemes for each help connotate the film by hinting at different moods and tones but it also noticeably clear that they all follow a black and grey colour scheme and I think that this is something I should take into account when I am designing my work. Another common feature is mood each of these products have a similar if not the same mood and this is the mood of a horror /thriller movie, this mood is set by each in a poster and DVD cover for example because it is needed to connotate the film it is about and the mood of the film so from the cover or poster of a movie the audience is able to tell straight away what they are going to be seeing at the cinema if they where to see it just from the mood. Fonts are also a common feature and the fonts also help connotates the mood and tone of the film, the fonts for the DVD and poster and even in the company logo the fonts help connotate different things for example the font on the company logo represents the company as its bold and it makes it seem like it is bold company this resemblance is a technique that that is commonly found in these things. Another common feature between trailers and other trailers in horror/ thriller movies is how the film is added up into lighting of the different scenes to create a horror or thriller atmosphere they will add glow to a certain character in order to symbolise how they are a character of hope. This mise en scene is a common feature for how all of them follow the same type of structure for how they was put into pre production and story boarding scene by scene. Another common feature is how they all aim for audience appeal and aiming at the audience that entails the horror genre and they do this by including certain colour schemes and lighting as well as mood tone and music to make sure that it fits the criteria for a horror movie. Another common feature is there BBFC classification for each of these films it ranges from 12 to 15 which is most likely the common age to aim at when making a horror movie. • What aspects of the research will you include within your own production work? • The first aspect from these similar existing products that I am going to use is the fonts as I feel that they are set up and made to look creepy in a strange art style and I feel that this set ups a eerie feel for the horror movie nd the art style for fonts like insidious can help foreshadow the tone and mood of the film and so I feel that I should include this in my poster and DVD cover as well as company logos because the foreshadowing is a nice feature that I feel that I should replicate in my own work. Another aspect that I would take is how they prepare for a movie, I will not have enough time to complete the full mise en scene preparation but I will take the idea on board of storyboarding and shortlisting my work to make sure that it is all set up to a good standard and I have it all planned out. Another aspect of the similar existing products that I will take into my own work is the colour scheme because I feel that this is very important all of these similar existing products is they are in the same genre the same genre that I am going to aim for and the colour scheme that they all use is the same and this colour scheme helps connotate the mood of the film and the tone of the film just by being in the movie which I think is important part of the project, having a colour scheme that reflects the tone and mood setting of the film. Another aspect of the similar existing products I want to use in my own production is the mood that Is set in all of these pieces as I feel that tis sets an important mood to the audience about the film before they go and see it on the posters and DVD covers. The same mood is shown in the company logo and then the trailer and I want to have this feeling in my movie. Another aspect that I want to include in my work from these similar existing products is the tone, the tone is an important part of all of these products because it helps determine what the movie will be like and if it is worth watching. The final part of the work that I will be aiming for is audience appeal of all these products, these similar existing products have various different techniques from tone to mood to font that help determine the if it will sell to the audience and by taking these techniques I should also be able to appeal to the audience.
  • 8. Audience research • Observation: this tells me that I have a strong mix of genders in my survey this shows that out of the 72 people that took my survey 51.39% where make and 44.44% where female and 4.17% where other this shows me that the answers to this survey will be mixed and equally split out responses from a mixed male and female audience and this means that any responses that I get will be applicable to the target audience of both male and female. • What this says about my audience: this says that my audience is split between the majority of male and female genders. And this says that any results that I get from other questions in this questionnaire will be aimed at a audience that is both male and female and fairly mixed however, there is more males that answered my survey so I will have to take that into account with all the responses I received in my survey when later appealing to my audience. • How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience because it will be aimed at a male and female audience but it will also be aimed more as a male audience and this is because the film will be a mysterious and dark film and dark is more associated at a male audience as shown by the secondary research and so this shows me that my product will appeal to thisaudience.
  • 9. Audience research • Observation: the majority of my age is aged 17 years but it also has a lot of people that are 16 years of age and there is a smaller number of people that are aged from 18+ . Out of the 72 people that answered this question36.99% of them where 16 years of age when taking this survey. 46.58% of the people that answered this survey where aged 17 years old. 16.44% of people that took this survey where 18+ in age and this shows that I have the majority of age between 16 to 17 as my audience for the questions on this survey. • What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience has range that vairy between the years of 16 to 17 with the small exception of few people that are aged above that and this tells me that my audience is young and this means that I cant have my product to be violent and have lost of bad language as I need the film to fit into the BBFC classification in order for this audience to actually have the ability to watch the short film. • How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience for a number of reasons, to start with it will appeal because it will not have a large amount of gore and violence and so it will fit under the correct BBFC classification for this audience to watch, secondly the main characters will be of the same age making it relatable to all of these age groups hence appealing to this audience.
  • 10. Audience research • Observation: this shows that there are different thoughts on how long people expected a short film to be, this shows me that there can be a short film of any length between 2 to 5 minutes and it will appeal to the audience, the split between the in of 2 to 3 minutes and 4 to 5 minutes means that I have to split it down the middle in order to appeal to both the best that I can. • What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience has split idea of how long a short film should be, it says that some people have a possible smaller attention span then others, for example people that wanted 5 to 6 minutes wont have that high of an attention span because of the willingness to sit through a long short film where as the middle marking or 4 to 5 which is the normal time for a short film has the biggest audience and people like this because it gives people just enough time to enjoy a short film and not loose attention to it. And it says that the people that chose the 2 to 3 minutes of short film are those that are less interested in sitting through a long duration prefer something short, sweet and to the point. • How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience as it will be between 3 to 4 minutes long this appeals between the majority vote of how long a film should be appealing to people that want it to be 2 to 3 minutes and also people that want it to be 4 to 5 minutes and so I will be able to keep my audience.
  • 11. Audience research • Observation: this tells me that the majority of people like there characters to relatable when watching a film, this is because its easier to enjoy a characters development if you want to be them for example or you feel you can relate to them in some way this is something a film tries to get out of each of its characters and some characters have multiple characters with this is to create lots of personality's in one film and this is so they can appeal to a large demographic of people in one film creating a character for everyone that all different groups of people can relate to and as shown by this survey answer it is clear that the majority of people prefer there characters to be relatable and 21.92% of people don’t like them to be relatable. • What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience want to be able to relate to the characters and feel like they could put them selves in the same scenarios as in the film and act it out the same as my secondary research proves people much prefer it when they can feel like they are the character of the film and so it is my gaol to appeal to this audience it also says that there is a minority of people that do not like the characters to be relatable. • How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience because my product will be aimed at multiple demographics that have lots of different personalities but the main character will fit a phycographic and demographic of a lot of people and this will mean that I will appeal to my audience with my product as the majority of people wanted to have a relatable character and by doing this I will appeal to this audience.
  • 12. Audience research • Observation: this tells me which of my audience has a knowledge of film and TV pop culture, the reason that I ask this question is because I feel it is important that I get an understanding when making reference to different pop culture in my movie then they would be able to understand the references and in turn I can appeal to this audience as a whole. The majority of people have either some or a lot with 46.58 % of people having some knowledge on the subject of pop culture in film and tv and 15.07% this means that 61.65% of people have either some or a lot and 38% of people don’t have any knowledge on it at all which means that I will appeal to the majority of my audience. • what this says about my audience: this tells me that the majority of my audience are interested in pop culture in film and tv and this shows that I can appeal to my audience well by including this type if references and similar content in my own short film I think it will work well because it tells me that my audience is interested in what I intend to put forward in my short film. • How will your product appeal to this audience: it will appeal to this audience because my movie will have pop culture references included in it as well as different film shot types that are mostly seen in pop culture movies and since the majority of my audience has some or a lot of knowledge it should be good a good start to have this in the short film in order to appeal to them.
  • 13. Audience research • Observation: out of all of the answers that I received from this question it was clear the majority of people ranged from liking the complex plotlines to not liking the complex plotlines but the majority of people from the answers that I got agreed that they much preferred to have complex plotlines and from this I was able to tell that I could. • What this says about my audience: this says that my audience had mixed views on weather they wanted to have a complex plotline or if they actually wanted it to be mainly aimed and focused around a simplistic plot that doesn’t take to much to understand and is just easy and relaxing, it says that there is a split and this split shows that if I have a complex plot I will have half an audience that will like it for a complex plot and half an audience that will dislike it for that reason which shows that no matter what I choose to do I will have an audience. • How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to half of the audience because of the fact that I will be making a simplistic yet complex plot, by this I mean that the plot will be easy to understand for someone watching which provides audience appeal to those that didn’t want a complex plot but there will be a deeper meaning and lore that you will have to pay attention to in order to understand it.
  • 14. Audience research • Observation: this tells me that the majority of people like a mix between light and dark toned films and don’t like one or the other and by liking both they give mixed option which means that I can create a dark tone while having light toned comments and conversations in the trailer this brings in the different aspects of tone into the short film that I will make. 12.33% of people prefer a dark tone, which is something that I prefer but there is more of an audience for light tones films with a 27.40% but there is a 60.27% of people want mixed which shows me where the majority of my audience is and this shows me what I should aim for in project and my secondary research also shows this. • What this says about my audience: this tells me that the audience that I have aimed at is into both dark toned and light toned in this shows me that I have to make my work both light and dark toned in the short film and this will create a great set up for a movie because the character can bring great characteristics to the character development having him light toned in a dark situation and this says that my audience will like this product as it has a good set up. • How will your product appeal to this audience: this will appeal to my audience because I have both a dark and light tone in the short film my example of this is that everything happening in the movie like scenarios will be dark toned but the character in the movie will be light toned.
  • 15. Audience research • Observation: in this section I asked people what they thought favourite horror movie would be and I got lots of responses and a lot of the responses that I received for this was pretty much the same, people said either insidious, the conjuring, saw and paranormal activity there was some different choices like ringu the Japanese version of the ring and then there was the ring which was a different version of the ring. All of these choices are real horror films which surprised me because a lot of people chose in the previous question light tone other dark tone but all of the films given in this part of the survey where that of the choices where all serious full on dark toned films. • What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience has a long line of people that are interested in horror films that are the most renowned for example big blockbuster horror films instead of watching more indi horror movies but this tells me that this audience will be more used to the generic horror film sounds and jump scares so if I was to follow the same structure it would appeal to this audience. • How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience because I am aiming at a audience that is interested In horror movies with story like the conjuring and insidious and so I feel that I will appeal to my audience by aiming at this exact type of people.
  • 16. Audience research • Observation: this response says that the majority of people do not want this film to be found footage which is surprising because I felt like form the secondary research I made the hunch that there would be more people that where interested in found footage horror movies and so I found this surprising that this was the outcome. However it would appear that 24.66% of people have like the idea and 76.34% don’t like the idea. • What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience is not interested in having found footage as part of a short film and would prefer to have short film and it shows me that there is a lot of people in my audience that don’t want me to use found footage and I I was to use this found footage then this would mean that to appeal to my audience I would have to stop my plan for found footage. • How will your product appeal to this audience: my product would not have appealed to this audience because I was going to make my short film to be found footage for some of it just because at college it is something easier to do, but not I will change this and not make a found footage short film so that I am able to appeal to this audience.
  • 17. Audience research • Observation: this question is where I inquired as to how people wanted the music in the film to be, for example dramatic or low toned in music and what I mean by this is that I wanted to ask if the music in films should be really lowed and deahtning when something big happens or weather it should be very low toned light music that creepy and not to loud, I ask because horror films uses a large mix of the two and in response I got to see that my audience much preferred a low tone style an example of a film with this is the insidious series which links back to answers from a previous question where a lot of people chose to have insidious as the favourite horror movie. 68.49% of people prefer low toned where as 31.51 of people prefer the film to be high toned showing that the majority of people prefer the film to be low toned. • What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience is more interested in low toned music and this mean that when appealing to my audience I will need my music to be low toned and dark creating an eerie feel, thanks to this question I'm now able to see what my audience would prefer in a short film. • How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to the audience on this aspect because I am going to make it so that my short film has a creepy low toned soundtrack throughout, this means that I will appeal to 68.49 % of my audience but there will also be scenes in the movie where it goes dramatic for a moment to enthesis the power of that scene. This will appeal to the remainder of my audience there for I should be able to appease about 89% of them.

I like the music to be really dramatic and loud so it brings me into the film that I am watching. • Do you like complicated films that have a complex plotline or films that are easy to understand? I love complicated films because they keep me interested and give me reason to watch it more then once. • What is your favourite horror movie and why? My favourite horror film is saw because of all the violence and gore that is in the movie • Do you like to have a character in a film that is relatable to you? Yes I do but I'm not really that fused if they are or aren’t I just care about the story. • How long would you expect a short film to be and why? I expect a short film to be around 10 to 11 minutes so it has time to interest me and develop different characters.
  • 20. Interview 1 • Observation: this interviewee is prefers dramatic and loud music over low toned music because they feel that this immerses them in the film more because of the music if its dramatic brings more atmosphere to it also these believe. I think that there should be a much lower tone to the short film. This person also really enjoys complicated plotlines because they feel that if they watch a film that’s complicated they can watch the film twice so it gives them reason to watch it again and the reason that they would watch it again I can guess is to really understand what is happening in the film. This persons favourite horror film is saw and the reason for this is because they feel that the gore and violence in this movie is what keeps everything interesting. This person does like characters to be relatable but doesn’t care if the characters are relatable because they are more interested in the story to the film rather then the characters. This person expects to have a short film that is 10 to 11 minutes long. • What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience is interested in long short films that are the same size as usual long short films would be this says that this person likes to watch long movies and knows that some short films can be from 10 to 11 minutes long as well as 4 to 5 minutes which gives some insight as to how my short film should be as I don’t want it to be to long. This also tells me that the horror films he is into are ones that have plot and lots of gore and violence so for my project to appeal to this audience I would have to make it so that the film has a good plot but is also clever in how it plays out and has lots of gore and violence in order to make this interviewee happy. • How will your product appeal to this audience: my product will appeal to this audience because the plotline wont be simply it would be complex and take time to fully understand but it would also have a simplistic story that anyone could understand so the hidden lore is what needs watching again and I feel this would appeal to the audience.
  • 21. Interview 2 • What type of music would you prefer to see in a short film that is a horror/thriller? I prefer to have mix of both in a film because I think it can work well when there is a good mix in a movie to raise the atmosphere in the film. • Do you like complicated films that have a complex plotline or films that are easy to understand? I like films when they are complicated but I prefer it when films are more easy to understand when they are a horror because I want jump scares not plot. • What is your favourite horror movie and why? My favourite horror film is insidious because of the dramatic music that plays in horror scenes and plot twists and I prefer the calm low toned music that plays in the creepy scenes of this movie. • Do you like to have a character in a film that is relatable to you? Yes I like it when a character in a movie is relatable, I prefer it when the main character is relatable to me as It gives me more reason to watch it. • How long would you expect a short film to be and why? I would expect a short film to be about 3 to 4 minutes long because this is enough time to fit in a short story with a good plot and isn’t to dragged on in time.
  • 22. Interview 2 • Observation: the first question that I asked was if the music in a film should be dramatic or low toned and the response was the music should be a mix of both and the reason given was that it would be better for different scenes as some scenarios are made better with dramatic scenes and some scenes need a low toned soundtrack to enthesis it and make it better. The next question that I asked is if they liked complicated plotlines or not and the response that I got from this is that they do like complicated plots but the prefer films to be simple and easy to understand. The third question that I asked is what there favourite horror film is and why the answer that I got in response to this was that they like insidious the best and this is because it has plot but it also has good music and jump scares throughout the movie. The second question that I asked is if characters should be relatable and the answer received stated that they prefer it when the main character to a movie is relatable because they find it more watchable. I then asked how long they would expect a short film to be and the answer was that it should be between 3 to 4 minutes this is because they want a film to be short so they don’t loose interest if its to long. All this on a whole tells me that the person that I am asking is into a mix of dramatic movies in short films that are between 3 to 4 minutes and the main character should be relatable to most people in order to appeal to this audience. • What this says about my audience: this tells me that my audience is interested in short films that are not to long and range between the time of 3 minutes or 4 minutes and this is because my audience feels that they are given an amount of time between this period of film to not loose interest in what they are watching, they feel the plot should not be complicated and easy to understand and also that the main character should be relatable to them. • How will your product appeal to this audience: my short film will appeal to this audience because my short film will be estimated at 3 to 4 minutes long and short without a complex difficult to understand plotline, and the main character will be an average person and because of this I feel I will appeal to the audience of this as he will be relatable to the audience. The music in the short film wil switch from a light toned music to dramatic for different scenes which appeals to this audience as it is a mix of both.
