Editing techniques in you see me now

Media-Opening Sequences – You see me now
5 Editing Techniques used in the opening:
1. Cutaway= this is used to allow the audience watching the film to see the
reaction of the people watching the magic trick. While at the same time
being able to see Jack do the trick with the spoon. Creating the illusion of the
spoon bending, we don’t see him swap the spoons.
2. Wipe= this is used nearer the end of the scene where Jack steels the watch
and the wallet off the man. The jump off the ferry to the platform shows him
transitioning between shots.
3. J-cut= this technique is used at the beginning of the scene, when the public
are listening to Jack explain his trick. The movement is used in conjunction
with speech.
4. L-cut= the technique is used when the man who was stolen from realised he
has been robbed the volume of the music / sound builds tension and
emphasis as it gets faster and Jack runs away at a high speed.
5. Cutting on action= the technique is used when the member of the public
realises how the trick was carried out, exposing Jack to the rest of the public.
This builds tension in the shot again due to the fast pace music in the
background.
In my opinion the theory demonstrated in the film “you see me now” is the Enigma theory.
This is because throughout the opening a few clues are shared. However not enough is
discovered for the audience to have a more in-depth understanding of what will happen
next. Nor do the audience watching have the opportunity to have a clear view of what is
happening in the filmas it is only the opening scene. The tricks in the filmare illusions and
are used to make the audience feel as if they know and understand what is actually
happening. The Enigma theory leaves the audience asking questions and wondering what is
going to happen next just like the opening of this filmdoes.
