Narrative theories
1. Todorov’s Theory
TODOROV suggested that conventionalnarrativesare structured in 5 ways:
This is the transition of Todorov’s narrative theory.
This type of narrative structure is very familiar to me and can be applied to many
‘mainstream' film narratives.
Todorov suggests that all narratives begin with an equilibrium or and initial situation where
everything happening is balanced or calm. I will put this across in my own trailer by having a
scene of the characters happy, calmand unaware of what is about to happen to them.
Therefore I will be following typical conventions that can help to make my trailer more
successful.
This is followed by some form of disruption, which is later resolved and the solving of this
problem can be the whole plot for the film. Once the disruption occurs in our own trailer we
2. will use a series of montage shots to pick up the pace and emphasise the effect of the
disruption of the original equilibrium. Similarly to this theory the vast majority of the plot of
the film would be to solve the problem.
With the resolution at the end of the film the new equilibrium is usually established
however in my own trailer the restoration of the equilibrium will be unclear so as to intrigue
the viewer to see how the film will end.
