1. Dutch East India Company
1. The company was founded in 1602 by a
charter granted by the States General, the
national administrative body of the Dutch
Republic
2. In April 1595, the Amsterdom based
‘company of far lands’ which was the first
among the so called precompanies
3. Which had managed to raise a capital of f.
290,000 sent out four ships to the East
Indies under the command of Cornelis de
Hautman

cargoes of paper, nutmeg and mace
5. In the meantime, a number of new
companies in different part of Dutch had
been organized for trade with the East
Indies
6. The two Amsterdam companies were
merged in 1598 and came to be known as
old company
7. By 1600 four another companies had been
formed in the various provinces of
Neatherlands
3. 8. The inevitable result was an increase in the
coast price of the pepper and other spices
and a decline in their sale prices
9. To all those who realized the enormous
potential of the East India trade
10.It was imperative that something be done
to curb the cutthroat competition among
the various companies
11.The initiative was taken by the old
company which on the strength of being
the pioneer in the 1st India trade

for a monopoly of all trade east of the cape
of Good hope for a period of 25 yrs.

Compagnie (VOC) was chartered on 20
March 1602

Magellan
