Badjao or Bajau means man of the seas, this tribal group
is known as the Sea Gypsies because they move with
the wind and the tide on their small houseboats called
vintas, they can be found in many coastal settlements
and inhabit the waters and shores of Tawi Tawi, Sulu,
Basilan, and some coastal areas of Zamboanga City.

The Iranun are Muslim and many live on the coast,
earning their living from the sea. Others live further
inland and have adopted an agricultural lifestyle
cultivating rice and vegetables.
The Iranun were excellent in maritime activity as

to ply the route connecting the Sulu Sea, Moro Gulf
to Celebes Sea, and raided the Spanish held
territories along the way

Jama Mapun is from the word Jama meaning people, and Mapun
which indicates the name of the Island Municipality of Mapun,
thus called the “People of Mapun” . They are one of the
Bangsamoro Ethnic tribes in the Philippines. They are the Sama-
speaking people widely known for their creativity and traditions.

Kagan, and the Kal’lao people of Samal.

Mapun in Sulu Archipelago is classified as a fourth-class municipality. It was called Cagayan de Sulu by Spanish colonialists and later named Cagayan de Tawi-Tawi upon the establishment of Tawi-Tawi province in 1973. But no matter what outsiders called their homeland, the Jama Mapun always refer to their native territory as Tanah Mapun or Land of Mapun. In 1988, President Corazon Aquino signed Republic Act (RA) 6672 to officially allow the municipality to revert to its ancient name Mapun, which means “you forgive” in their native language.
They are renowned as agriculturalists, cultivating rice, corn, abaca, and coconut for cash crops, whereas their counterparts living along the coast practice fishing.
