 Mindanao, referred to as “THE LAND OF PROMISE” is the second largest and
southernmost island in the Philippine Archipelago

culturally diverse island.

Ethnolinguistic groups – Badjao (Muslims)
Badjao or Bajau means man of the seas, this tribal group
is known as the Sea Gypsies because they move with
the wind and the tide on their small houseboats called
vintas, they can be found in many coastal settlements
and inhabit the waters and shores of Tawi Tawi, Sulu,
Basilan, and some coastal areas of Zamboanga City.

Ethnolinguistic groups – Iranun (Muslims)
 The Iranun are Muslim and many live on the coast,
earning their living from the sea. Others live further
inland and have adopted an agricultural lifestyle
cultivating rice and vegetables.
 The Iranun were excellent in maritime activity as
they are traditionally sailors and pirates. They used
to ply the route connecting the Sulu Sea, Moro Gulf
to Celebes Sea, and raided the Spanish held
territories along the way

 JAMA MAPUN. Is the native inhabitants of the Cagayan de Tawi-
Tawi (Cagayan de Sulu) or Mapun and the Turtle Island where it is
closest to Sabah, Malaysia.
 Jama Mapun is from the word Jama meaning people, and Mapun
which indicates the name of the Island Municipality of Mapun,
thus called the “People of Mapun” . They are one of the
Bangsamoro Ethnic tribes in the Philippines. They are the Sama-
speaking people widely known for their creativity and traditions.

 The Kalagan (also spelled Kagan, Kaagan, or by the
Spanish as Caragan) are a subgroup of the Mandaya-
Mansaka people who speak the Kalagan Language
 The Kalagan comprise three subgroups which are
usually treated as different tribes: the Tagakaulo, the
Kagan, and the Kal’lao people of Samal.

Ethnolinguistic groups – Kalibugan (mostly muslims)
"Kalibuga" (Kolibugan) means "mixed breed" and refers
to the Subanun of the Philippines who have intermarried
with the Tausug and Samal. Kalibugan, who number
about 15,000, live in villages on the coast in western
Mindanao. Most have converted to Islam. Their culture
shares elements with those of Subanun, Tausug, and
Samal.

What group is Manobo?
The Manobo is a group of indigenous
people in the Philippines. They mostly
live in Sarangani, Agusan del Sur,
Davao provinces, Bukidnon, and North
and South Cotabato.

a Cebuano term meaning
"native" or "indigenous". The
term is short for Katawhang
Lumad (Literally: "indigenous

farmers who fish, hunt, gather,
and practice little trade. The
