Filipino cuisine continues to
astonish people with its unique
flavors, inventiveness, and
variety.
Dishes range from the most basic,
such as fried salted fish and rice,
to complex paellas and cozidos
of Iberian origin, prepared for
fiestas.
There are distinct Spanish,
Chinese, Indian, and western
elements in each dish, which
contributes to the distinctiveness
of Filipino cuisine.
Foods from the Philippines are
not just consumed on a daily
basis; there are also dishes that
are prepared, cooked, and served
on special occasions such as
birthdays, Christmas, and New
Year's celebrations, as well as
fiestas.
Every household has its own
signature meal, which was
probably developed from a
particular family's history and
passed down the generations
in the form of a recipe.
If you were to visit a Filipino
home, which is famous for its
warm hospitality, you would
never be allowed to leave
without being showered with
food and gifts.
Pre-colonial
Through trade, the
Philippines has been
strongly impacted by its
Asian neighbors. Rice and
condiments were imported
to the pre-colonial
Philippines through trade.
Spanish Period
The changes brought by
Spanish colonization also
affected how Filipinos
consumed and prepared
their food.
American Period
Americans brought
technology with them such
as fridge and ovens. They
also introduced American
food like burgers.
Japanese Period
During the Second World
War, canned food became
the main source of food for
the people of the
Philippines.
Modern Philippines
Filipino cuisine is being
recognized internationally
now, not just because of its
unique taste but also
because of the long span of
its history.
Adobo
Adobo is typically prepared
using fish or meat
marinated in a blend of
vinegar, soy sauce, and
spices.
Sinigang
Sinigang is a Filipino soup
or stew that has a sour
and savory flavor. It is
most frequently linked to
tamarind.
Kare-Kare
Kare Kare is a type of
Filipino stew with a peanut
sauce that is rich and thick.
It is a popular dish served
on special occasions.
Lechon
Lechon is a full adult pig
roasted slowly over an
open charcoal grill to
obtain a crispy skin.
Halo-Halo
Halo-halo is a summertime
dessert or snack consisting
of mixed fruit and beans
topped with finely crushed
ice, milk, or ice cream.
Leche Flan
Leche Flan is an egg and
milk-based dessert topped
with a soft caramel. It
resembles caramel custard.
Bibingka
Bibingka is a type of native
Philippine rice cake.
Traditionally, this is made
with galapong, coconut
milk, butter, and sugar.
Kakanin
Kakanin is the umbrella
name for glutinous rice
cakes. Its core ingredients
are sticky rice and coconut
milk.
Balut
Balut is a fertilized egg
embryo that is boiled and
consumed out of its shell.
Turon
Turon is a traditional
Filipino snack consisting of
a slice of banana rolled in
brown sugar, then wrapped
and fried.
Isaw
Isaw is a popular Filipino
street food consisting of
grilled pig or chicken
intestines.
Fish balls
Fish balls are rounded
meat balls formed from
fish paste and then boiled
or deep-fried.
