IMPORTANCE OF MATERIAL PRESERVATION
• Industrial Equipment are Engineered Material
• Environmental Factors
• Poor Handling
• Expensive repairs
• Project Delays
• Equipment life cycle
• Poor preservation impacting the COMPANY with a cost
Preservation is a set of activities that
aims to prolong the life and relevant
characteristics, and enhance the value of
equipment and keep them in a good
condition.

COMMON REQUIREMENTS
Building
Quality Culture
• Suppliers Instruction : preservation
requirements based on COMPANY / Supplier
standard to be followed and detail any
additional maintenance preservation
requirements covering all project phases.
• Initial Preservation:
The application of specified preservatives
and fitting of specified protection to any
equipment/system by suppliers prior to
delivery, to maintain the equipment/system
unimpaired.
• Preservation Maintenance:
The periodic activities to confirm that the
initial preservation is intact and functioning.
This also includes repair of deteriorated
initial preservation

MATERIAL STORAGE , HANDLING & PRESERVATION
Best Practice - Preservation of Pipes
• Pipes shall be stacked on steel racks or woody rafter.
• Stacking of pipes shall be in a position that rain water does not accumulate and affect pipes
as well damage to pipes or coatings
• Stainless steel material shall be protected against exposure to water splash during shipment
and storage.
• Pipes shall not be allowed to get submerged in ground or pool of water.
• End protectors on pipes, flanges, weld bevels, threads and socket ends shall be firmly
attached.
• The ink used for marking, if any shall be free from chloride, sulphur and lead.
• Piping system which have been completed as far as cleaning and pressure testing shall be
properly laid up.
• Pipes with threaded connection, extra care shall be taken in protecting the threads by
putting plastic caps or wrapping with cloth.

Best Practice- Preservation of Pipes Fittings and Structural Steel
•Spiral wound gaskets should be stored flat especially large sizes, 24 inches and larger.
•Fittings shall be stacked on stands / concrete or wooden sleepers covered with tarpaulin.
•Flange Gasket seating surface must have a protective mean & extreme care must be taken during handling to
avoid damage. Flange shall be kept face (gasket seating ) facing downwards protected by plywood
•All fittings should be given a coat of anticorrosive paint and shall be stored in such a location that rain water
does not accumulate in it.
•Carbon steel and alloy steel fasteners should be stored in separate bays after oil preservation spray
•Structural steel shall be positioned in a way to allow self draining.
•Structural Steel should not be in contact with soil during storage.

Best Practice- Preservation of Valves
• Special cares and consideration shall be taken during handling and transporting of valves
against mechanical damage.
• Critical points of the valves such as the valve end ports and stem shall be protected.
• Valves shall be restrained from movements during transportation to avoid any damages to
the main valve and its accessories.
• Small size valves shall be positioned carefully to prevent any damage.
• Transportation, lifting and handling of valves shall be carried out safely by appropriate
equipment and trained personnel.
• The store area should provide means of protections against severe weather conditions such
as sand encroachment, rains, and other conditions that can affect valves integrity.
• New valves shall be stored with their packaging unopened, or if inspected shall be restored
accordingly.
• At least once every 3 months, the valves shall be visually inspected to check the integrity of
the covers, caps, grease and other visible conditions.

Best Practice- Preservation of Rotating Equipment
• Preservation lubrication oil filling bearing housings to the bottom of shaft, as recommended
with evidence data sheet.
• Turn the shaft until the preservative oil is distributed to the whole bearing surface and drain
any excess preservative.
• Application of grease on internal parts forcing out as much of the old grease as possible.
• Enclosed Gears, apply gear oil then so that, when the gears are turned, all interior surfaces
will be coated with the preservative.
• Mark shaft and rotate weekly to prevent shaft sag/bend.
• Shaft and Coupling Wrapped with moldable waxed cloth corrosion inhibitor.
• Temporary Blinds shall be installed at Suction and Discharge
• Physical Protection and Covering Protection from sand, dust, moist, grinding splinters &
falling objects from erection of materials.

Best Practice- Preservation of Cables and Tray’s
• Store the material Above ground
• Cable reel shall be kept such away that it rest on both flanges
of the drums.
• Cut ends of cables shall be covered using plastic caps or
insulation adhesive tapes.
• Physical Protection and Covering Protection from sand, dust,
moist, grinding splinters & falling objects from erection of
materials.
