I.
Write: Write a journal entry for each one of the following topics. They should be turned in on November 19th:
1.
Cicero: You are at the forum. You see this man standing in front of everyone, and suddenly everything goes quiet. All
you hear are his words: powerful words which carry a message of republicanism, rights, freedom and so on. You then
realize that you are in front of the greatest speaker in Rome: Cicero. You go back home to your parents and tell them
about this experience!
2.
Pax Romana: You are an old man. You served under Caesar and then Mar Anthony, who was Octavian's greatest
enemy. Yet, after many years of his ruling, you know see that he has brought peace and prosperity to the Romans. But
the Republic no longer exists. Letting go of the Republic was a bad thing or has it given you a better life?
3.
Caligula: He was as crazy as you could imagine. Or was he a genius? In order to mock the senators, this emperor
named his horse consul. Was he nuts or was he a prankster? What do you think?
4.
Hadrian's Wall: In Britain, the Romans built a wall in order to keep barbarians outside. They had posts and garrisons
where trade flourished. More than a defensive system it was a show or Roman power. How was that? If you need to
research, do it, but USE YOUR OWN WORDS!
5.
Christians: Outside the Circus Maximus, you hear a crowd roaring. You ask what is going on, and you are told about
this certain group of people called "Christians". They follow the word of their teacher, Jesus, who said that people
should love and respect each other in order to reach heaven. Now they are being sent to be eaten by lions. What is
your opinion?
