Yuki Tanaka s Japan s Comfort Women Essay examples
Yuki Tanaka s Japan s Comfort Women
This paper is a review of the book Japan s Comfort Women Sexual slavery and prostitution during
WWII and the US occupation by Yuki Tanaka. This book was published in 2002 by Routledge. The
book deals with the thousands of Japanese, Korean, Chinese and other Asian and European women
who were victims of organized sexual violence and prostitution by means of comfort stations setup
by the Japanese military during World War II.
As we first get into the book, we find out that the origins of comfort stations i.e. military brothels
are unknown, but official documents strongly suggest that the Japanese Imperial Forces created
comfort stations roughly around 1931 1932 for Japanese sailors. In the ... Show more content on

Some other women however faced different routes.
Chinese and Filipina women were lured into these sexual schemes by not just deceit, but by force
as well. Recruiters used violence and often kidnapping to get these women. While the Japanese
forces had occupied China, they used Korean women for their authorized comfort stations for fear
of anti Japanese resentment among Chinese civilians. However, this did not stop some Japanese
from setting up comfort stations using Chinese women. These unofficial comfort stations were
not given approval from higher Japanese authority. The Japanese army adopted the tactics called
Shodo Sakusen which meant scorched earth strategy (p.46). This meant that the army could
destroy any village if ordered too which of course included the rape of women. This is an account
of a 15 year old Chinese girl who along with other girls, was abducted and separated from her
family. Day after day they were raped by Japanese soldiers in the cave. Each day she was raped by
at least two or three soldiers sometimes by 10 soldiers. The cave was guarded by Chinese
collaborators, making it impossible to escape. She was often taken to an officer s room in the
fortress and raped there, too (p.46). The Japanese also occupied the regions of the Philippines and
Filipina women were kidnapped and abducted as well by force and were used as comfort women.
The Filipino s had a lot of anti Japanese guerilla movements

Adolf Hitler s Leadership and the Government that Follows...
Leadership, and the Government that Follows
Measuring a ruler s success can easily be defined in the satire Animal Farm. The spoof is based
on a totalitarian leadership. The four main characters in this book are the pigs on the farm. They
go against Napoleon s will and represent the white movement. The reason this story becomes
prevalent in the essay is because it shows how few people can turn around a society. Orwell
describes in animal farm just how he got his idea for the novel. I saw a little boy, perhaps ten
years old, driving a huge cart horse along a narrow path, whipping it whenever it tried to turn. It
struck me that if only such animals became aware of their strength we should have no power over
them, and that men exploit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many know Hitler as the murderous leader of Germany in the early nineteen hundreds. Hitler
was a brilliant leader arguably. Although un ethical, he was respected. People listened to him and
followed his guidance because he persuaded people so well. These people didn t have minds of
their own so he gave one to them. The rules of his leadership resided in extreme dictatorship. After
World War 1, Hitler had a secured supreme political power. Hitler went on to gain their support by
persuading most Germans he was their savior from the Depression, the Communists, and the Jews
along with other undesirable minorities. After Hitler s rise, he began the Nazi party. Few would
have thought that the Nazi Party, starting as a gang of unemployed soldiers in 1919, would
become the legal government of Germany by 1933. The Nazi party rose and crashed. It became
more finalized after 1925 when Hitler was released from prison, and formally resurrected the
Nazi Party. Hitler began rebuilding and reorganizing the Party, waiting for an appropriate time to
gain political power in Germany. Hitler skillfully made his way through the Nazi Party politics
and emerged as the sole leader. The Nazi party once again began to fall yet was saved when new
government officials were elected and new campaigns were run. This now had captured over
eighteen percent of the vote, making the Nazi party the second largest party. Leading the Nazi Party

Demonstration Speech How To Play The Clarinet Essay
How To Play The Clarinet
Today I am going to attempt to teach you to play the clarinet. Many of you are probably
thinking: How hard could it be? It s easy? Right? Well, let me tell you you guys are completely
incorrect. The clarinet a woodwind instrument, there are two main categories of woodwinds.
The first is the basic woodwind which are flutes (there are many different types of flutes, like the
piccolo), and the reed instruments, otherwise called reed pipes. This category includes clarinets
(again there are many types like the b flat and E flat) and Saxophones ( Tenor Sax, Alto Sax and
Bass Sax). Since clarinets are classified as reed instruments, it is obvious that you would need a
reed to play it. Before I go into the steps I should probably tell you what ... Show more content on

First you have the mouthpiece, and on the mouthpiece you will find a metal cylinder this is called
the ligature. The ligature holds the reed on the mouthpiece so that the player can put air through
the mouthpiece, and sound will come out. Next you will find a piece called the barrel. The barrel
of the clarinet connects to the bottom of the mouthpiece. Below the barrel, is a part of the
clarinet called the upper joint. The upper joint, as you may have guesses connects to the barrel.
The next part of the clarinet I will discuss with you is called the lower joint. The lower joint
connects to the upper joint. The last piece you will need to know is called the bell. The bell
connects to the lower joint. Each of the parts of the clarinet are connected by pieces called cork
tenons. Now that you know all the major parts of the clarinet I can began to teach you the basics

Omega 6 Fatty Acids
The purpose of the modification of the bacon was to make it more healthier. The researchers
changed the omega 6 fatty acids into omega 3 fatty acids because omega 3 is considered the
healthy fat. So instead of getting it from sources like fish and other sources they wanted to find a
way to modify a geneto change that omega 6 into omega 3 to make the bacon a healthier version
of itself. This use of technology scares me sometimes because many are cloning animals in ways
they weren t meant to be in the first place. They don t even know for sure that this method is
completely safe so more research and observation needs to be done before they start using this. I
believe that if their is omega 3 in a specific source we need to go and consume that source. We
need to get our nutrients exactly where they originate from and not by injecting specific genes into
foods were they aren t meant to be.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By altering the genes of mosquitoes the scientists want to get rid of this disease. By making the
mosquito body chemistry toxic to the malaria parasite. There are other methods were scientist try to
trap the parasite inside the mosquitoes gut into its salivary glands, molecules on the parasite
surface fit certain receptors on mosquitoes tissue that allow free passage and scientist think they
can block those receptors. By blocking these receptors the parasite dies inside the mosquito and the
mosquito can no longer carry Malaria. Another approach would be when scientist insert a toxin to
kill the parasite.
The genetically engineered rice had these new genes that contaminated this rice crop. These genes
were extracted from bacteria which let the rice crop to survive the herbicide (liberty). This
herbicide killed many plants including the red rice that was grown with this rice crop. Before

Nathaniel Lee Professor P. Hiebert RWS 100 07 10 September 2014 Thompson Essay Clive
Thompson, in his chapter excerpt Public Thinking, from the book Smarter Than You Think: How
Technology Is Changing Our Minds For the Better published by Penguin Group, argues that the
development of technology of mass communication improves the user s writing and their ability to
collaborate. To support his argument, he incorporates statistics to show the enormity of the
production of writing, anecdotes to connect with the reader s emotions, experiments to support the
claim that people perform better in front of an audience, Stanford Study of Writing to support the

This is extremely relevant to the topic of the audience effect. This evidence is used to persuade us
that the audience effect does exist for the better, just like when an author posts a blog for the entire
world to view. Thompson used a survey of mathematicians about the question of multiples. He
argues that with more communication, we can use better teamwork to discover solutions more
efficiently. The respondents were asked if they did the same work as another person unknowingly.
31% agreed to this statement and noted that if they worked together, they think they would have
completed the task more efficiently. I question its credibility because of the anonymity of the
surveyors and the ambiguity of the methods. However, I find the opinions shared by the
mathematicians very valuable because they are one of the best at what they do. I do find this
evidence sufficient because professionals were interviewed. Thompson includes this survey
because it clearly supports his claim. I find this extremely relevant to because it is about the topic
of interconnections and can be strongly, positively correlated to the lack of communication before.
Thompson uses anecdotes that are easily relatable and have a great expression of feelings. One of
them is about the experiences of Ory Okolloh, a Kenyan law student studying in the United States,
blogging about the tragic current events of her home

Marxist View On Gender Inequality
As a social institution, gender is a process of creating distinguishable social statuses for the
assignment of rights and responsibilities. As part of a stratification system that ranks these statuses
unequally, gender is a major building block in the social structures built on these unequal statuses.
As a process, gender creates the social differences that define women and men . In social
interaction throughout their lives, individuals learn what is expected, see what is expected, act
and react in expected ways, and thus simultaneously construct and maintain the gender order: The
very injunction to be given gender takes place through discursive routes: to be a good mother, to
be a heterosexually desirable object, to be a fit worker, in sum, to signify a multiplicity of
guarantees in response to a variety of different demands all at once (Butler, 1990: 45).
Members of a social group neither make up gender as they go along nor exactly replicate in rote
fashion what was done before. In almost every encounter, human beings produce gender, behaving
in the ways they learned were appropriate for their gender status, or resisting, or rebelling against
these norms. Resistance and rebellion have altered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unionised men who could easily be replaced by women collude in this process because it allows
them to monopolise the better paid, more interesting, and more autonomous jobs: Two factors
emerge as helping men maintain their separation from women and their control of technological
occupations. One is the active gendering of jobs and people. The second is the continual creation
of sub divisions in the work processes, and levels in work hierarchies, into which men can move in
order to keep their distance from women (Cockburn: 1985:

A Sentimental Journey Through France And Italy
The prevailing cast of this period is not melancholy nor tragedy but farce . Discuss in relation to A
Sentimental Journey.
There exists the idea that the period occupied by sentiment was one of refined and intellectual
emotion. However, it seems that if this notion ever existed, it was quickly overcome with literature
occupying the theme of farce, either ironically or obliviously. A specific example we can point to to
clearly demonstrate this idea is A Sentimental Journey through France and Italyby Laurence Sterne.
While some contemporaries adored Sterne s work on a serious sentimental level, many other
critics, both past and present, see it instead as a conscious farcical parody of the idea and concept
of sentiment that was so revered and admired at the time. In A Sentimental Journey we see various
elements of farce through the different aspects presented to us as readers, ranging from the
characters within the story, with a focus on Mr. Yorick, our main character, and farce is even
present in the form of the book itself. And it is these factors we will examine that highlight the
farcical nature, not only of A Sentimental Journey, but most likely a great deal of sentimental
literature written of the time. The first thing to address before we dive too deeply into the
exploration of comedy and farce specifically in A Sentimental Journey, we must first dissect what
is meant by the term farce itself. The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms describes it as a

Freud s Psychoanalytic Theory Analyzes Modern Day Texts
From the time of the Victorian Era, theorists have analyzed the mind and how it works. Many
consider Sigmund Freud the father of psychology. According to Freudian theory, humans are
controlled by three personalities throughout life; the id, ego, and super ego. However, we are not
born with all three. Instead, we are born with our id ( Structural Model ). At the age of three, the
second part of the unconscious mind, the ego, is developed. Later, when the child is five, or
ending his or her phallic stage of development, the super ego structure is developed ( Structural
Development ). Using psychoanalytic theory, we are able to analyze many modern day texts.

Although we only have one structure of personality as babies, by the time we are three, another
structure starts to take effect. Although there are many characters in B: DKR, the graphic novel
solely focuses on Bruce Wayne as Batman. However, there are a multitude of examples of the id
in control. For one, Wayne is continuously bothered by his id which wants him to return to
fighting crime as Batman. In the beginning of the novel, Wayne s id taunts him, You are nothing,
a hollow shell, a rusty trap that cannot hold me ( B: DKR , 25). His id goes on to say, You
cannot stop me, but still you try, still you run ( B: DKR , 25). This shows that his id is clearly in
control and Wayne s ego has an insignificant amount of authority. Secondly, while fighting crime
on his first night, Wayne is not able to keep up with the younger criminals as he could have when
he was younger however; his id pushes him to continue. Wayne thinks, This should be agony, but
I am a man of thirty, twenty again ( B: DKR , 34). This reiterates the point that his impulse is
strictly controlled by his id. Lastly, when Wayne loses his fight to the Mutant gang s leader, he
does not give up the war. Instead, his animalistic character wants to kill the gang s leader and so he
returns once again to settle his inner dispute. In Batman s final encounter with the Mutant gang s
leader, Batman thinks, He s fast, faster than I am. And stronger ( B:

Cultural Stereotypes In The Magdalene Sisters
According to Cleary, cultural representations of Ireland s enervating past permit present day
detachment from and complacency about the nation s history (Cleary) he argues further that our
responses are tantamount to experiencing a lucky escape from all that . In this essay I will use the
example of Peter Mullan s film The Magdalene Sistersto discuss the changes that have occurred in
the Irish society since and during the time of the Magdalene Laundries. According to Smith Free
State constructed an identity for Irish women solely in domestic terms women were mothers,
women were wives (Smith), these ideals were the beliefs of many of the population of nineteenth
century Ireland. It was because of these beliefs that the Magdalene Asylums... Show more content

From early 1970 s onwards there were less and less women surrendering themselves to the
asylums and in 1996 the last establishment, on Sean McDermott Street in Dublin, closed its doors
for the final time (O Sullivan and O Donnell). The perception of the Magdalen asylums in
twentieth century Ireland was extremely negative, whilst the asylums could have been seen as a
place of refuge during the nineteenth century; this was most definitely not the case during the
twentieth century. From documents and stories from survivors, it is clear that these women were
being held against their will and were forced to partake in unpaid labour and were stripped of all
of their rights. One of the posters for the movie contained the tagline The triumphant story of three
women who found courage to defy a century of injustice . Whilst the average stay of a woman in a
Magdalene Asylum was three years, they were haunted by their experiences for the rest of their
lives; with many emigrating in order to escape the shame filled stares of members of the
community. So, were these three women, and far too many more like them, really triumphant? The
women were free to leave the laundries once they could guarantee their fortune in some way; either

Eyewitness Testimony, Helpful or Hinderance
Eyewitness evidence can be fundamental when it comes to solving crimes, however, with the
increasing number of cases now being exonerated by DNA evidence, the questions lies, what degree
of confidence should be placed on the evidence of the eyewitnesses alone? Countless factors are
associated with the accuracy and consistency of eyewitness evidence, such as line up content, line
up instructions, the questioning techniques of interviewers and notably the genderand/or age of the
witness. Eyewitness testimony may not always be accurate, but despite its weaknesses, by using
empirical studies to guide reforms, eyewitness testimony can be an extremely beneficial instrument
in the criminal justice system. Inaccurate evidence is not necessarily... Show more content on

Therefore the age of an eyewitness is an important point to note when considering the accuracy of
eyewitness identification, especially with the case of very young children providing significantly
inferior accuracy than adults if questioned incorrectly. When children are questioned in the same
method as adults, misinterpretation and errors can weaken the child s credibility and the accuracy
of their testimony. The fact however remains that eyewitness testimony can be beneficial if caution
is exercised when interviewing children so as to not repeat questions, suggest information, or allow
for interviewer assumptions and/or bias.
As well as age, the gender of an eyewitness has been consistently linked to issues with the accuracy
and consistency of evidence. Jacqueline and Wolfgang (1986) referenced one of the earliest
empirical studies of gender differences in eyewitness testimony, that of William Stern (1903 1904)
with the opinion that women s eyewitness testimony was less accurate and less resistant to the
influence of misleading information than men s (Pg. 565). Research has since revealed a female
advantage in the number of details, and the accuracy of memory recall when providing eyewitness
testimony. A study undertaken by Areh (2011) states gender is one of the factors significantly
influencing memory recall (Pg. 559). The study concentrated on sex differences in the accuracy
and quantity of memory recall for specific details of an event (Pg. 559).

Superpowers During The Cold War
During the Cold War 1947 1991, over the course of forty four years was a political and military
tension between the two powers of the Communist bloc (Eastern bloc) and the Capitalist bloc
(Western bloc). The Eastern bloc dominated by the Soviet Union along with the Warsaw pact and
states aligned with the Soviet unionrefers to the to the former communist state of Central and
Eastern Europe. The Western bloc was dominated by the USA with NATO along with its allies and
refers to countries allied with the United States and NATO against the Soviet union and its allies.
The potential dangers of superpower conflict in the nuclear age were demonstrated by the Cuban
Missile Crisis that developed in 1962. That was the first time during the cold war the USA and the
Soviet Union faced each other in direct conflict. This essay will focus on the factors that lead to
the high political tension between the two superpowers and how this conflict had almost brought
the USA and USSR into a ground war and worst of all into a nuclear war.
The origins of this conflict lays behind many events that happened in Cuba since 1959 when the
Cuban Revolution occurred. That meant the spread of communism in South America and the US
understood that the U.S.S.R will be supporting the revolution in Cuba and they will take advantage
of the situation to expand their sphere of influence.
Since the end of Spanish rule, Cuba have been under US influence. Its proximity to the USA was

Examples Of Tragedy In Death Of A Salesman
American Tragedy Aristotle defines what a tragedy is in his famed piece Poetics. In it, he sets
guidelines that all tragedies should meet in order to become the fantastic displays of misery that
they are meant to be. Six main elements are present in every tragedy: plot, character, thought,
diction, melody, and spectacle. The two most important, of course, were plot and character. Both
had to be complex but believable, consistent, and possess the ability to arouse pity and fear in the
audience. Although both are the top elements that are the focus of tragedy, the other four are
imperative to achieve the tone and overall character of one. In Death of A Salesman by Arthur
Miller, the character Willy Loman is an average modern American man... Show more content on

More than that, he wanted to become that man that he admired who died the death of a
salesman in his green velvet slippers whose funeral garnered many loving friends and family
(Miller 81). Audiences can relate as they too have had an idol in their head that they have
aspired to become. Seeing the aspirations of Willy warrants pity in the audience when they see
what a failure Willy Loman becomes. Failure is what consumes Willy. He understands that that
is his life. But in his deep deluded mind twisted with broken memories and false hopes he can
never truly accept it. He never has that point of discovery that a tragic hero does. Willy Loman
never realizes the doom waiting for him at the end of his downward spiral. Even his attempts at
suicide, and finally his one successful one, were misguided and were attempts to become
something greater. No one shows up at the funeral besides his family. He is not great like a
tragic hero. Willy Loman is a nobody, he is only a tragic hero to himself, just like everyone in the
audience. Everyone sings the song of their own tragedy . That is the American tragedy. Everyone is
the American tragic hero with their own tragedy. Arthur Miller captures the Average man with the
average family and average dreams, living an average life with no gain in the end.

There are many mysteries about the smallpox virus. Since the seventeenth century, doctors have
understood that if the pustules merge into sheets across the body the victim will usually die: the
virus has split the whole skin. If the victim survives, the pustules turn into scabs and fall off,
leaving scars. This is known as ordinary smallpox.
Some people develop extreme smallpox, which is loosely called black pox. Doctors separate
black pox into two forms flat smallpox and hemorrhagic smallpox. In a case of flat smallpox, the
skin remains smooth and doesn t pustulate, but it darkens until it looks charred, and it can slip off
the body in sheets. In hemorrhagic smallpox, black, unclotted blood oozes or runs from the mouth
and other body orifices. Black pox is close to a hundred per cent fatal. If any sign of it appears in
the body, the victim will almost certainly die. In the bloody cases, the virus destroys the linings of
the throat, the stomach, the intestines, the rectum, and the vagina, and these membranes
disintegrate. Fatal smallpox can destroy the body s entire skin both the exterior skin and the interior
skin that lines the passages of the body.
Smallpox virus s scientific name is variola. It means spotted in Latin, and it was given to the
disease by a medieval bishop. The virus, as a life form, comes in two subspecies:

Essay on Resistance to Organizational Change
Individuals when faced with any major change will be inevitably resistant and will want to preserve
the status quo, especially if they think their status or security within the organization is in danger
(Bolognese, 2010). Folger and Skarlicki believe that organizational change produces skepticism in
employees which make it problematic and possibly even impossible to contrive improvements
within the organization (as cited in Bolognese, 2010) Therefore, managementmust understand,
accept and make an effort to work with resistance, since it can undermine even the most well
conceived changeefforts (Bolognese, 2010). Furthermore, Coetsee states for organizations to

Technical resistance is caused when employees are concerned about the capital that was invested in
the technology and equipment that is currently being used. There is also cultural resistance that is
difficult for employees to change values, norms, and procedures that are supported by the current
culture within the organization. The final type of resistance is political resistance. This happens
when decisions made in the past are now being questioned which can cause certain stakeholders to
feel threatened (Van Dijk, Van Dick, 2009).
Elements for Dealing with Resistance
According to Palmer, Dunford, and Akin (2009) there are six different approaches to managing
resistance to change which are, situational, let nature take its course, thought self leadership,
creative counters, tinkering, kludging, and pacing approach, and finally the power of resistance
approach. While all of these different methods or approaches for dealing with change have positives
and negatives, some are better than others. For example, Kotter and Schlesinger s situational
method is great in that it recognizes some situations need to be treated differently than others.
However, they suggest that manipulation could be used and while they explain the dangers of this
approach, its application is very limited and the rewards don t outweigh the risks.
Another approach that Palmer, Dunford, and Akin (2009)

Impact Of Mexican Cuisine On National Identity
The Impact of Mexican Cuisine on National Identity Authentic, traditional Mexican food is
thought to be a product that was developed by the Mayan Indians. Food was first hunted and
gathered so that it was then cooked on ceramic pots or iron skillets over open fires. This ritual
was fundamental for the natives. They needed to obtain their food and prepare it in this way so
that they could eat. This exemplifies the idea that the preparation of food is not only symbolic of
having a meal to eat, but also of nature being transformed into culture. Additionally, everyone has a
deep personal connection with the simple act of eating because what one person prefers to eat
might be different for another individual. As individuals, we are each born into a culture that most
likely has a cuisine different from what others prefer or are accustomed to. All of our palates are
distinctly unique. To provide an example of the aforementioned, the Spanish invaded Mexicoin the
16th century, and they brought along with them their own kinds of foods, with wheat holding a
particular importance. The Spaniards made attempts so that Mexicans too would have the same
liking to wheat as they did, but the reality was that Mexico had a strong attachment to corn. And
while the introduction of wheat caused corn to be thought of as nutrient deficient, Porfirian
intellectual elites later found that their maize was as equally healthy. Food matters, especially in the
context of Mexico. It had always been

Harsher Penalties On The Crime Rate
In The United States, there is a direct correlation between the states with the lowest and highest
unemployment rates; and the lowest and highest crime rates. According to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics the states with the lowest unemployment rates generally have the lowest crime rates
(Bureau of Labor Statistics). One can argue harsher penalties would most likely deter criminals
from committing crimes, but preventive measures are most efficient for decreasing the crimerate.
The most efficient way to reduce the rising crime rate in the United Statesis to install more
preventative measures, heavily regulate privatized prisons that are run for individual profit, and
provide more support and lenient treatment for petty criminals.
By installing more preventative measures such as after school sports groups or activities,
streetlights and more police patrol, communities can significantly reduce the crime rate. According
to Denise Gottfredson of Prevention Science children who are unsupervised from the time they
get out of school until the time their parents come home from work, have a higher risk of
committing a crime (Denise Gottfredson). In order to prevent the large gap of supervision after
school, children should attend or join after school sports groups or activities. After school activities
or sports allows children to release any anger they may have; by releasing their emotions the
children are less likely to have aggressive behavior towards their community.

Indian nationalism refers to the many underlying forces that molded the Indian independence
movement, and strongly continue to influence the politics of India, as well as being the heart of

More than just Indian
Indian nationalism is as much a diverse blend of nationalistic sentiments as its people are ethnically
and religiously diverse. Thus the most influential undercurrents are more than just Indian in nature.
The most controversial and emotionally charged fiber in the fabric of Indian nationalism is
religion. Religion forms a major, and in many cases, the central element of Indian life. Ethnic
communities are diverse in terms of linguistics, social traditions and history across India.
Hindu Rashtra
An important influence upon Hindu consciousness arises from the time of Islamic empires in India,
during which many Hindu temples were destroyed and Hindus forcibly converted to Islam, and
millions of Hindus killed by Muslim invaders. Entering the 20th century, Hindus formed over 75%
of the population and thus unsurprisingly the backbone and platform of the nationalist movement.
Modern Hindu thinking desired to unite Hindu society across the boundaries of caste, lingustic
groups and ethnicity. In 1925, K.B. Hedgewar founded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in
Nagpur, Maharashtra, which grew into the largest civil organization in the country, and more
potent, mainstream base of Hindu nationalism.

Major Hurricane Recovery
South Florida is particularly vulnerable to the effects of major hurricanes. The sub tropical weather
places the region directly in the historical path of seasonal storms. The area has faced repeated
battering by major storms over the decades (Blake, Landsea, Gibney, I.M. Systems Group, August

create unique and difficult challenges for the population during these events. The millions of people

of his faith and after he wavers, he returns to God. Throughout these tests of faith, he experiences an

shown that we can be mature adults at 18. This paragraph proves my point on the FACT that we
are mature enough at 18 to become an adult. 18 is definitely old enough to vote. At 18 we start
paying more attention to the world around us, including politics. We should be able to vote at 18.

Compare And Contrast Italian And Renaissance Art
Anna Jacoby
AP European History
Ms. Sennett
September 2017
Italian vs. Northern Renaissance Art During the Renaissance, the people of Europe experienced a
rebirth of culture and study of classical antiquity. New ideas arose that transformed every aspect of
European life. Beginning in Italy, the Renaissance spread northward to the rest of Europe. Italy
had the advantage of not being hit by the Black Death or the Hundred Years War, in comparison
to the rest of Europe, and therefore was able to trade to Asia and maintain prosperous cities
during the Middle Ages. The Italians, as a result, had merchants who were proud of their success
in business, which they believed was possible because of their merit as an individual. The
merchants were able to fuel the Renaissance in Italy by commissioning artists and writers to
produce specific works. Northern Europe still needed to recover from the Black Death and
Hundred Years War to gain political and economic stability to have a Renaissance. While both the
Italians and Northern Europeans went through a Renaissance, they experienced the Renaissance
differently, and the similarities and differences between their experiences in terms of how they
each developed the ideals of humanism, individualism, and secularism is evident in Renaissance
artists works, specifically Michelangelo s David and van Eyck s The Madonna of Chancellor
Rolin. Humanists of the Italian Renaissance worked to understand human nature by studying classic

Comparison Of Phaethon And Daedalus And Icarus
In the two Greek myths, Phaethon and Daedalus and Icarus , the main characters go through a
major trial that enforces their pride, which eventually leads to their death. The literary elements in
these two myths include characters, imagery, and conflict. These elements help the author express
the bright scenes, understandable reasonings, and unfortunate downfalls. The lesson in both tales is
equivalent, as the theme is: A prideful disregard of the warning from those who are older and wiser
can quickly lead to disastrous consequences. However, the way this present this lesson is what
makes it different from each other. The main characters being Phaethon, Daedalus, Icarus imagery,
and conflict all work together to form the theme.
Certain people help form the common motif of these two myths. To prove this, in Phaethon ,
Phaethon s self centered trait leads him from burning the earth, to freezing it, and eventually, to
Zeus killing him. All of this because he craved attention, as it states, How many people are
watching me, me, me! (pg. 53, par. 64). Like it shows, his attention makes him ending up dead.
When it says, ...Me, me, me... it explains how he wanted the recognition. This reckless behavior
shows Phaethon s pridefulness as well, just as wanting attention shows how better you think
you are. Continuing on this, Icarus also ends up being swallowed with self confidence, but in a
more smug way. He thinks he s an expert flier and believes he can go even higher than the sun,
as he quotes, Think you re (the sun) the highest thing in the sky, do you? Because of these
actions performed by Icarus, it is obvious to see how carefree he is. This sentence can connect
with the theme, as the prideful disregard he committed was to his father, a wise and clever man.
He warned, Don t fly too close to the sun! but alas, Icarus completely neglects his caution. It is
easy to predict Icarus s recklessness will lead him to his doom. Therefore, the actions of the
characters really do help set up the downfalls, as in both texts, it explains how their pride blinds
them from the consequences.
The imagery in these stories is an important step in making the theme as well. In Phaethon, it shows
a vivid image of him

The Aspects Of Social Conformity In The 1950s
Conformity in the 1950s America in the 1950s had many social norms that everyone was
expected to follow. If one did not follow those rules they were seen as crazy and often identified
as insane. These social norms were important to follow if one wanted to lead a happy and
successful life. To be successful and happy meant one had to be married, have children, a job
that could pay the bills, and a house. However, what happens after one has everything and is
successful according to society? In Revolutionary Road, Frank and April suffer because they
follow society s expectations on what a happy life should be but even after doing so, they are
not truly happy. Men were expected to be the breadwinners while women were expected to take
their place at home as housewives. The Wheelers kept true to that so that they could be happy
and successful. Frank has an office job in New York while April is a housewife; They have two
children and a home in Connecticut. Frank and April are aware of the standards that one needs to
follow to be happy but somehow after they have had to follow those norms they are not. They
both begin to feel trapped and feel like this is what the rest of their lives would be like. They
began to think of ways to escape their lives and thoughtof ways to bring back excitement or meaning
into their lives.
The life of a man in the 1950s consisted of work and travel to work and home. In the film, Wheeler
s neighbors show us the damage that men had to face when having to work all day. It hinders the
relationship that men had with their wife and children. Frank and April s neighbor, Shep, shows
us this when he tries to talk with his children. He asks them what they are doing and his kids
completely ignore him. He s not there for most of the day and he does not have the time to bond
with his family. Not only is their relationship with their kids damaged but their relationships with
their wives. Frank notices that his life no longer has the adrenaline that it once used to. Frank
says to April, I was full of blood, scared, but full of life . In this scene, Frank explains to April
what he felt while he was out at war. He felt the thrill and adrenaline of something real. He looks

The Psychology Of Human Behavior
Psychology, the study of human behavior, encompasses numerous realms and topics. From
human development to drug abuse, psychologists strive to understand behavior and apply their
findings. One such area that begets curiosity and research is the cognitive process that is
memory. Memory is one of the most precious and crucial components of a person. Experiences
shape a personality and create a person. Memories in the form of a witness s testimony have the
power to jail someone for life. However, are these memories reliable? The biological perspective in
psychologyis the study of the brain, genetics, hormones, and neurotransmitters and how these
factors influence behavior. With respect to the biological level of analysis, the three principles
that are encouraged are as follows: the use of animals in research is encouraged, behavior can be
innate because it is genetically based, and there are biological correlates of behavior. When
evaluating the reliability of memory, one can take a biological approach, using the principles to
design an experiment that would successfully investigate the biological correlates of the cognitive
process. Martinez and Kesner is an example of such an experiment. The purpose of this experiment
was to determine the role of acetylcholine on memory. Acetylcholine is one of the seven major
neurotransmitters in the body. It is thought to influence muscle movement and memory as there are
several links between a lack of the neurotransmitter and

Preventing Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a medical condition that causes the bones to become delicate and breakable due
to a loss of tissue, usually caused by hormonal changes and even a deficiency of calcium, which
includes vitamin D. If upon a minor fall, or lifting an object the wrong way you may experience a
broken bone, that could be a sign of osteoporosis. Although it is true that while people age, they
lose bonedensity, it is not true that everyone will for sure get Osteoporosis. There is no known cure
yet for Osteoporosis, however, there are several treatment plans available. The most important part
of dealing with Osteoporosis is knowing proper prevention, providing your body with the right
nutrients to maintain healthy bones, and knowing the treatments accessible to you if you happen to
acquire the disease.
In preventing Osteoporosis you must increase bone density as much as you can while you re young
and continue so as the years progress. Protecting your bones starting in childhood has proven to
increase the strength of the bone at later ages. By thirty one should reach the maximum bone
density required for preserving the mass. There are effective steps that may be taken to minimize

of obtaining Osteoporosis at a later age so it is very important that I get all the bone density I
can now, and keep it there, so when i m older I won t have to worry about fragile broken bones.
The article I chose also goes into detail about prevention, what goes on once you get it and several
medication and treatment plans with the pros and cons of each. Thank you for reading my

Thai Teenagers
The lifestyles of the Thai teenagers have changed a lot in the past 40 50 years. For me, the
technology between in the past (1960 s) and now (as of 2017) is very distinct in its own way due to
the technological advances during the time. For this reason, I will introduce some of the aspects
that changed during 1960s to now such as communications, transportations and music.
The Technology used by Thai Teenager in communication aspect has come a long way since the
past. In the past, some communication technologies were postal messages and telegrams. The
postal message was popular during the 1960s due to how easy it was to write a message. Also,
the Thai teenagers didn t need to encrypt the message. On the other hand, telegram was also
popular back in the days, because of its speed of delivery but users had to encrypt messages to
Morse code and send the message to the staff that sent the message. Now, Thai teenagers use E
mail and Social media to communicate. E mail was invented to increase the speed of delivery and
to reduce delays from sending the physical letter (postal messages). It s now popular and used
globally. Social media is very popular too because it is a modified version of E mail. People use a
lot of social media especially Facebook which Thai teenagers use a lot to communicate and other
things. Social media allows teenagers to communicate face to face via video calling to see each
other s faces in real time without physically meeting them in real life. This is a

started pouring once more from Italy, carrying with them a renewed craving for pizza. In spite of
the fact that the pizza business was very extensive right now, the greater part of the pizzerias were

Comparing The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven
Based on the experiences and hardships of Native Americans in the United States, the stories
featured in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie display the
escapades of Victor and a few others such as Junior and Thomas. The collection of tales shows
various stereotypes of Native Americans that the author has identified with as aspects of his life
such as drinking problems within families. One of the main focuses of the book as a whole that was
present in almost every story was the relationship between Native Americans and other races. The
Natives in the story almost always inherently clashed with the whites of the story, however all was
not well between other minorities and even other Natives interacting with the protagonists. Race,
whether it is Native American, another minority, or white, does not determine the conflict and
tension between two people as displayed by Victor and Junior s interactions throughout The Lone
Rangerand TontoFistfight in Heaven. In the stories featured in Alexie s piece, damaging
relationships between Natives and their own families, neighbors, and peers can be seen. In the tale
Every Little Hurricane , the toxic relations between families and friends are exhibited as attendees
of a party begin to fight. Victor s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Epidemic Of Child Obesity
Over the past decade there has been an epidemic on the rise. This epidemic is child obesity. We
spend millions of dollars each year trying to help or prevent the onset of obesity. Some of the
reasons are due to our youth consuming more processed foods and not being physically active.
However, we as a society cannot just blame the laziness and not eating the correct types of foods
as the cause for obesity. This problem is more complex than people think and we can fix it, but
we do need government cooperation. There are many causes of obesity some of which are
poverty, food insecurity, parenting, and physical activity. The United States has the highest
amount of people below the poverty line in its history. Since these people make below $20,000
dollars a year, their only way of feeding themselves is buying the cheapest food. The cheapest food
in a food market is almost always processed food. These types of foods do not have the best
nutrient content. Eating these types of foods more frequently can increase a person s risk of
becoming obese. One of the many reasons people consume processed foods is because they are
very cheap The relative price of fresh fruits and vegetables it s gone up by 40% since 1980 when
the obesity epidemic first began. In contrast, the relative price of processed foods has gone down
by about 40% (A Place at the Table). Since processed foods are cheap, people under the poverty
line will mostly buy these types of foods. Sometimes people under the

Okonkwo Identity
In the the book Things Fall Apart, the main character in the book is Okonkwo and he is a leader
and a type of person who always stands by tradition. Okonkwo is best known for his manliness
and tough inflexible character during the book. Okonkwo is the best fighter in all of Umuofia(He
was still young but he had won fame as the greatest wrestler in the nine villages. pg6). If there was
a hard place in a rock, it would be Okonkwobut at the end of the book he kills himself. Okonkwo s
sense of identity was challenged with the introduction of Western ideas into the ibo culture.
Okonkwo started the novelharder than the metal that made the nails, but the cultural collision of the
British colonist and Ibo people affected Okonkwo to the point of him killing himself in the end
instead of fighting. Ultimately the reasons for Okonkwo s change in sense of identity and how the
introduction of Western ideas shaped the meaning of the work as a whole embodied the
abandonment of the Ibo people s faith, the British colonist of course, and the lack of understanding

Analysis of the Keurig Website
The Keurig website is a site that mainly focuses to promote their brewer products and sell them
to consumers. They also have many different products to accompany their brewing systems that
they have to offer. This website is indeed helpful and professional since it clearly promotes the
product and allows for easy navigation. It not only lets you shop for the product but also has a
section dedicated to customer service where the audience can view videos about their products.
The navigation is fairly easy to follow and the design makes it easy to read and manipulate. In
order to prove that this website is helpful and professional I will be analyzing the design, content,
usefulness, and how it s organized. When you first go to the home page it has a well developed
and effective design. The colors complement each other and the white text contrasts nicely with
the maroon, black, and mustard, making it easy to read and user friendly. The main navigation
menu is at the top right after their logo and company name. When you go the store option they
have their three main brewing systems and the names of them along with visuals of each system
and products that you can choose for each system. If you already know what brewing system you

  • 2. Yuki Tanaka s Japan s Comfort Women Essay examples Yuki Tanaka s Japan s Comfort Women This paper is a review of the book Japan s Comfort Women Sexual slavery and prostitution during WWII and the US occupation by Yuki Tanaka. This book was published in 2002 by Routledge. The book deals with the thousands of Japanese, Korean, Chinese and other Asian and European women who were victims of organized sexual violence and prostitution by means of comfort stations setup by the Japanese military during World War II. As we first get into the book, we find out that the origins of comfort stations i.e. military brothels are unknown, but official documents strongly suggest that the Japanese Imperial Forces created comfort stations roughly around 1931 1932 for Japanese sailors. In the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some other women however faced different routes. Chinese and Filipina women were lured into these sexual schemes by not just deceit, but by force as well. Recruiters used violence and often kidnapping to get these women. While the Japanese forces had occupied China, they used Korean women for their authorized comfort stations for fear of anti Japanese resentment among Chinese civilians. However, this did not stop some Japanese from setting up comfort stations using Chinese women. These unofficial comfort stations were not given approval from higher Japanese authority. The Japanese army adopted the tactics called Shodo Sakusen which meant scorched earth strategy (p.46). This meant that the army could destroy any village if ordered too which of course included the rape of women. This is an account of a 15 year old Chinese girl who along with other girls, was abducted and separated from her family. Day after day they were raped by Japanese soldiers in the cave. Each day she was raped by at least two or three soldiers sometimes by 10 soldiers. The cave was guarded by Chinese collaborators, making it impossible to escape. She was often taken to an officer s room in the fortress and raped there, too (p.46). The Japanese also occupied the regions of the Philippines and Filipina women were kidnapped and abducted as well by force and were used as comfort women. The Filipino s had a lot of anti Japanese guerilla movements ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Adolf Hitler s Leadership and the Government that Follows... Leadership, and the Government that Follows Measuring a ruler s success can easily be defined in the satire Animal Farm. The spoof is based on a totalitarian leadership. The four main characters in this book are the pigs on the farm. They go against Napoleon s will and represent the white movement. The reason this story becomes prevalent in the essay is because it shows how few people can turn around a society. Orwell describes in animal farm just how he got his idea for the novel. I saw a little boy, perhaps ten years old, driving a huge cart horse along a narrow path, whipping it whenever it tried to turn. It struck me that if only such animals became aware of their strength we should have no power over them, and that men exploit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many know Hitler as the murderous leader of Germany in the early nineteen hundreds. Hitler was a brilliant leader arguably. Although un ethical, he was respected. People listened to him and followed his guidance because he persuaded people so well. These people didn t have minds of their own so he gave one to them. The rules of his leadership resided in extreme dictatorship. After World War 1, Hitler had a secured supreme political power. Hitler went on to gain their support by persuading most Germans he was their savior from the Depression, the Communists, and the Jews along with other undesirable minorities. After Hitler s rise, he began the Nazi party. Few would have thought that the Nazi Party, starting as a gang of unemployed soldiers in 1919, would become the legal government of Germany by 1933. The Nazi party rose and crashed. It became more finalized after 1925 when Hitler was released from prison, and formally resurrected the Nazi Party. Hitler began rebuilding and reorganizing the Party, waiting for an appropriate time to gain political power in Germany. Hitler skillfully made his way through the Nazi Party politics and emerged as the sole leader. The Nazi party once again began to fall yet was saved when new government officials were elected and new campaigns were run. This now had captured over eighteen percent of the vote, making the Nazi party the second largest party. Leading the Nazi Party got Hitler the advertisement he needed. German ... Many of you are probably thinking: How hard could it be? It s easy? Right? Well, let me tell you you guys are completely incorrect. The clarinet a woodwind instrument, there are two main categories of woodwinds. The first is the basic woodwind which are flutes (there are many different types of flutes, like the piccolo), and the reed instruments, otherwise called reed pipes. This category includes clarinets (again there are many types like the b flat and E flat) and Saxophones ( Tenor Sax, Alto Sax and Bass Sax). Since clarinets are classified as reed instruments, it is obvious that you would need a reed to play it. Before I go into the steps I should probably tell you what ... • 5. Omega 6 Fatty Acids The purpose of the modification of the bacon was to make it more healthier. The researchers changed the omega 6 fatty acids into omega 3 fatty acids because omega 3 is considered the healthy fat. So instead of getting it from sources like fish and other sources they wanted to find a way to modify a geneto change that omega 6 into omega 3 to make the bacon a healthier version of itself. This use of technology scares me sometimes because many are cloning animals in ways they weren t meant to be in the first place. They don t even know for sure that this method is completely safe so more research and observation needs to be done before they start using this. I believe that if their is omega 3 in a specific source we need to go and consume that source. There are other methods were scientist try to trap the parasite inside the mosquitoes gut into its salivary glands, molecules on the parasite surface fit certain receptors on mosquitoes tissue that allow free passage and scientist think they can block those receptors. By blocking these receptors the parasite dies inside the mosquito and the mosquito can no longer carry Malaria. Another approach would be when scientist insert a toxin to kill the parasite. The genetically engineered rice had these new genes that contaminated this rice crop. These genes were extracted from bacteria which let the rice crop to survive the herbicide (liberty). Hiebert RWS 100 07 10 September 2014 Thompson Essay Clive Thompson, in his chapter excerpt Public Thinking, from the book Smarter Than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds For the Better published by Penguin Group, argues that the development of technology of mass communication improves the user s writing and their ability to collaborate. To support his argument, he incorporates statistics to show the enormity of the production of writing, anecdotes to connect with the reader s emotions, experiments to support the claim that people perform better in front of an audience, Stanford Study of Writing to support the claim that students are writing more than before and history to debate how the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is extremely relevant to the topic of the audience effect. This evidence is used to persuade us that the audience effect does exist for the better, just like when an author posts a blog for the entire world to view. Thompson used a survey of mathematicians about the question of multiples. He argues that with more communication, we can use better teamwork to discover solutions more efficiently. The respondents were asked if they did the same work as another person unknowingly. 31% agreed to this statement and noted that if they worked together, they think they would have completed the task more efficiently. I question its credibility because of the anonymity of the surveyors and the ambiguity of the methods. However, I find the opinions shared by the mathematicians very valuable because they are one of the best at what they do. I do find this evidence sufficient because professionals were interviewed. Thompson includes this survey because it clearly supports his claim. I find this extremely relevant to because it is about the topic of interconnections and can be strongly, positively correlated to the lack of communication before. One of them is about the experiences of Ory Okolloh, a Kenyan law student studying in the United States, blogging about the tragic current events of her home ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Marxist View On Gender Inequality As a social institution, gender is a process of creating distinguishable social statuses for the assignment of rights and responsibilities. As part of a stratification system that ranks these statuses unequally, gender is a major building block in the social structures built on these unequal statuses. As a process, gender creates the social differences that define women and men . In social interaction throughout their lives, individuals learn what is expected, see what is expected, act and react in expected ways, and thus simultaneously construct and maintain the gender order: The very injunction to be given gender takes place through discursive routes: to be a good mother, to be a heterosexually desirable object, to be a fit worker, in sum, to signify a multiplicity of guarantees in response to a variety of different demands all at once (Butler, 1990: 45). Members of a social group neither make up gender as they go along nor exactly replicate in rote fashion what was done before. In almost every encounter, human beings produce gender, behaving in the ways they learned were appropriate for their gender status, or resisting, or rebelling against these norms. Resistance and rebellion have altered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second is the continual creation of sub divisions in the work processes, and levels in work hierarchies, into which men can move in order to keep their distance from women (Cockburn: 1985: ... • 10. A Sentimental Journey Through France And Italy The prevailing cast of this period is not melancholy nor tragedy but farce . Discuss in relation to A Sentimental Journey. There exists the idea that the period occupied by sentiment was one of refined and intellectual emotion. However, it seems that if this notion ever existed, it was quickly overcome with literature occupying the theme of farce, either ironically or obliviously. A specific example we can point to to clearly demonstrate this idea is A Sentimental Journey through France and Italyby Laurence Sterne. While some contemporaries adored Sterne s work on a serious sentimental level, many other critics, both past and present, see it instead as a conscious farcical parody of the idea and concept of sentiment that was so revered and admired at the time. In A Sentimental Journey we see various elements of farce through the different aspects presented to us as readers, ranging from the characters within the story, with a focus on Mr. Yorick, our main character, and farce is even present in the form of the book itself. And it is these factors we will examine that highlight the farcical nature, not only of A Sentimental Journey, but most likely a great deal of sentimental literature written of the time. The first thing to address before we dive too deeply into the exploration of comedy and farce specifically in A Sentimental Journey, we must first dissect what is meant by the term farce itself. The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms describes it as a kind ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Freud s Psychoanalytic Theory Analyzes Modern Day Texts From the time of the Victorian Era, theorists have analyzed the mind and how it works. Many consider Sigmund Freud the father of psychology. According to Freudian theory, humans are controlled by three personalities throughout life; the id, ego, and super ego. However, we are not born with all three. Instead, we are born with our id ( Structural Model ). At the age of three, the second part of the unconscious mind, the ego, is developed. Later, when the child is five, or ending his or her phallic stage of development, the super ego structure is developed ( Structural Development ). Using psychoanalytic theory, we are able to analyze many modern day texts. Throughout the novels Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (hereafter referred to as B:... Although there are many characters in B: DKR, the graphic novel solely focuses on Bruce Wayne as Batman. However, there are a multitude of examples of the id in control. For one, Wayne is continuously bothered by his id which wants him to return to fighting crime as Batman. In the beginning of the novel, Wayne s id taunts him, You are nothing, a hollow shell, a rusty trap that cannot hold me ( B: DKR , 25). His id goes on to say, You cannot stop me, but still you try, still you run ( B: DKR , 25). This shows that his id is clearly in control and Wayne s ego has an insignificant amount of authority. Secondly, while fighting crime on his first night, Wayne is not able to keep up with the younger criminals as he could have when he was younger however; his id pushes him to continue. Wayne thinks, This should be agony, but I am a man of thirty, twenty again ( B: DKR , 34). This reiterates the point that his impulse is strictly controlled by his id. Lastly, when Wayne loses his fight to the Mutant gang s leader, he does not give up the war. Instead, his animalistic character wants to kill the gang s leader and so he returns once again to settle his inner dispute. Eyewitness Testimony, Helpful or Hinderance Eyewitness evidence can be fundamental when it comes to solving crimes, however, with the increasing number of cases now being exonerated by DNA evidence, the questions lies, what degree of confidence should be placed on the evidence of the eyewitnesses alone? Countless factors are associated with the accuracy and consistency of eyewitness evidence, such as line up content, line up instructions, the questioning techniques of interviewers and notably the genderand/or age of the witness. Eyewitness testimony may not always be accurate, but despite its weaknesses, by using empirical studies to guide reforms, eyewitness testimony can be an extremely beneficial instrument in the criminal justice system. When children are questioned in the same method as adults, misinterpretation and errors can weaken the child s credibility and the accuracy of their testimony. The fact however remains that eyewitness testimony can be beneficial if caution is exercised when interviewing children so as to not repeat questions, suggest information, or allow for interviewer assumptions and/or bias. As well as age, the gender of an eyewitness has been consistently linked to issues with the accuracy and consistency of evidence. Jacqueline and Wolfgang (1986) referenced one of the earliest empirical studies of gender differences in eyewitness testimony, that of William Stern (1903 1904) with the opinion that women s eyewitness testimony was less accurate and less resistant to the influence of misleading information than men s (Pg. 565). Research has since revealed a female advantage in the number of details, and the accuracy of memory recall when providing eyewitness testimony. In it, he sets guidelines that all tragedies should meet in order to become the fantastic displays of misery that they are meant to be. Six main elements are present in every tragedy: plot, character, thought, diction, melody, and spectacle. The two most important, of course, were plot and character. Both had to be complex but believable, consistent, and possess the ability to arouse pity and fear in the audience. Although both are the top elements that are the focus of tragedy, the other four are imperative to achieve the tone and overall character of one. Seeing the aspirations of Willy warrants pity in the audience when they see what a failure Willy Loman becomes. Failure is what consumes Willy. He understands that that is his life. Since the seventeenth century, doctors have understood that if the pustules merge into sheets across the body the victim will usually die: the virus has split the whole skin. If the victim survives, the pustules turn into scabs and fall off, leaving scars. This is known as ordinary smallpox. Some people develop extreme smallpox, which is loosely called black pox. Doctors separate black pox into two forms flat smallpox and hemorrhagic smallpox. In a case of flat smallpox, the skin remains smooth and doesn t pustulate, but it darkens until it looks charred, and it can slip off the body in sheets. In hemorrhagic smallpox, black, unclotted blood oozes or runs from the mouth and other body orifices. Black pox is close to a hundred per cent fatal. If any sign of it appears in the body, the victim will almost certainly die. In the bloody cases, the virus destroys the linings of the throat, the stomach, the intestines, the rectum, and the vagina, and these membranes disintegrate. • 29. Impact Of Mexican Cuisine On National Identity The Impact of Mexican Cuisine on National Identity Authentic, traditional Mexican food is thought to be a product that was developed by the Mayan Indians. Food was first hunted and gathered so that it was then cooked on ceramic pots or iron skillets over open fires. This ritual was fundamental for the natives. They needed to obtain their food and prepare it in this way so that they could eat. This exemplifies the idea that the preparation of food is not only symbolic of having a meal to eat, but also of nature being transformed into culture. Additionally, everyone has a deep personal connection with the simple act of eating because what one person prefers to eat might be different for another individual. As individuals, we are each born into a culture that most likely has a cuisine different from what others prefer or are accustomed to. All of our palates are distinctly unique. To provide an example of the aforementioned, the Spanish invaded Mexicoin the 16th century, and they brought along with them their own kinds of foods, with wheat holding a particular importance. The Spaniards made attempts so that Mexicans too would have the same liking to wheat as they did, but the reality was that Mexico had a strong attachment to corn. Harsher Penalties On The Crime Rate In The United States, there is a direct correlation between the states with the lowest and highest unemployment rates; and the lowest and highest crime rates. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the states with the lowest unemployment rates generally have the lowest crime rates (Bureau of Labor Statistics). One can argue harsher penalties would most likely deter criminals from committing crimes, but preventive measures are most efficient for decreasing the crimerate. The most efficient way to reduce the rising crime rate in the United Statesis to install more preventative measures, heavily regulate privatized prisons that are run for individual profit, and provide more support and lenient treatment for petty criminals. By installing more preventative measures such as after school sports groups or activities, streetlights and more police patrol, communities can significantly reduce the crime rate. According to Denise Gottfredson of Prevention Science children who are unsupervised from the time they get out of school until the time their parents come home from work, have a higher risk of committing a crime (Denise Gottfredson). In order to prevent the large gap of supervision after school, children should attend or join after school sports groups or activities. The millions of people that live from Okeechobee Lake to Key West are vulnerable to the destruction capable by a major hurricane. • 39. Compare And Contrast Italian And Renaissance Art Anna Jacoby AP European History Ms. Sennett September 2017 Italian vs. Northern Renaissance Art During the Renaissance, the people of Europe experienced a rebirth of culture and study of classical antiquity. New ideas arose that transformed every aspect of European life. Beginning in Italy, the Renaissance spread northward to the rest of Europe. Italy had the advantage of not being hit by the Black Death or the Hundred Years War, in comparison to the rest of Europe, and therefore was able to trade to Asia and maintain prosperous cities during the Middle Ages. The Italians, as a result, had merchants who were proud of their success in business, which they believed was possible because of their merit as an individual. The merchants were able to fuel the Renaissance in Italy by commissioning artists and writers to produce specific works. Northern Europe still needed to recover from the Black Death and Hundred Years War to gain political and economic stability to have a Renaissance. While both the Italians and Northern Europeans went through a Renaissance, they experienced the Renaissance differently, and the similarities and differences between their experiences in terms of how they each developed the ideals of humanism, individualism, and secularism is evident in Renaissance artists works, specifically Michelangelo s David and van Eyck s The Madonna of Chancellor Rolin. • 42. Comparison Of Phaethon And Daedalus And Icarus In the two Greek myths, Phaethon and Daedalus and Icarus , the main characters go through a major trial that enforces their pride, which eventually leads to their death. The literary elements in these two myths include characters, imagery, and conflict. These elements help the author express the bright scenes, understandable reasonings, and unfortunate downfalls. The lesson in both tales is equivalent, as the theme is: A prideful disregard of the warning from those who are older and wiser can quickly lead to disastrous consequences. However, the way this present this lesson is what makes it different from each other. The main characters being Phaethon, Daedalus, Icarus imagery, and conflict all work together to form the theme. Certain people help form the common motif of these two myths. To prove this, in Phaethon , Phaethon s self centered trait leads him from burning the earth, to freezing it, and eventually, to Zeus killing him. All of this because he craved attention, as it states, How many people are watching me, me, me! (pg. 53, par. 64). Like it shows, his attention makes him ending up dead. When it says, ...Me, me, me... it explains how he wanted the recognition. This reckless behavior shows Phaethon s pridefulness as well, just as wanting attention shows how better you think you are. Continuing on this, Icarus also ends up being swallowed with self confidence, but in a more smug way. He thinks he s an expert flier and believes he can go even higher than the sun, as he quotes, Think you re (the sun) the highest thing in the sky, do you? Because of these actions performed by Icarus, it is obvious to see how carefree he is. This sentence can connect with the theme, as the prideful disregard he committed was to his father, a wise and clever man. He warned, Don t fly too close to the sun! but alas, Icarus completely neglects his caution. It is easy to predict Icarus s recklessness will lead him to his doom. Therefore, the actions of the characters really do help set up the downfalls, as in both texts, it explains how their pride blinds them from the consequences. The imagery in these stories is an important step in making the theme as well. In Phaethon, it shows a vivid image of him ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From human development to drug abuse, psychologists strive to understand behavior and apply their findings. One such area that begets curiosity and research is the cognitive process that is memory. Memory is one of the most precious and crucial components of a person. Experiences shape a personality and create a person. Memories in the form of a witness s testimony have the power to jail someone for life. However, are these memories reliable? The biological perspective in psychologyis the study of the brain, genetics, hormones, and neurotransmitters and how these factors influence behavior. With respect to the biological level of analysis, the three principles that are encouraged are as follows: the use of animals in research is encouraged, behavior can be innate because it is genetically based, and there are biological correlates of behavior. When evaluating the reliability of memory, one can take a biological approach, using the principles to design an experiment that would successfully investigate the biological correlates of the cognitive process. Martinez and Kesner is an example of such an experiment. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the role of acetylcholine on memory.
