2. GIS
• GIS is Geographic Information System
Geographic-physical earth
Information-information tied to physical earth
System- the technology and methods used to
analyze and display the information tied to physical
earth
GIS – A system which involves capturing , storing,
processing and manipulating,analyzing,managing,
retrieving, and displaying data which is geographically
referenced
3. GIS has are 5 essential components:-
• Hardware-includes computer,printer
• Software-GIS software (ARCGIS,Google Map)
• Data- referenced to locations on earth
• Method-needs well designed plans and rules
• People-technical specialists user
GIS is a spatial data, which is divided into two:
• Raster data
• Vector data
GIS contain Non spatial data(attributes
attached to spatial data)
4. Raster data
• It represents geographical
feature only through pixel
• One pixel contain only 1
value , thus only 1
geographic feature
represent by a single set of
grid cells.
Eg -forest density , soil types
• Digital satellite images uses
raster format
Vector data
• It represent geographical
feature through points and
lines
• Point represents 1 pair of
coordinates (X&Y)
Eg –cities , villages
• Line represents 2 pair of
coordinates (X1,Y1 &X2,Y2)
Eg –roads , railway tracks
5.
6. BENEFITS
• Better decision making
• Improved communication
• Managing geographically
GIS APPLICATION
• Environment - conservation & monitoring
• Land information system(rural/urban)
• Crime mapping
7. International Information Systems
• International information systems are
organized to serve the needs of developed as
well as developing countries on co-operative
basis
• These are established to store information
and retrieve it expeditiously
• The major IIS &services are
INIS,AGRIS,INSPEC,BIOSIS,MEDLARS, etc
8. BIOSIS
• BIOSIS/Biological Abstracts
• Most comprehensive reference database for
life science research
• Database included in web of science
• BIOSIS search aids to provide focus to an
ambiguous search which combines the index,
journal content ,biological abstracts with
editional reports and reviews
• The significant portion of the content bound
in BIOSIS is not indexed in any other databases
9. MEDLARS
• MEDLARS is Medical Literature Analysis And
Retrieval System started by NLM (USA)
• It is a computerized storage and retrieval
system to furnish bibliographic access to
NLM’s large biomedical collection
• The work on MEDLARS began in1960 and
came into operation in 1964
• Eg:-CANCERLIT(Cancer Literature)
CHEMLINE (Chemical Dictionary Online)
TOXLINE(Toxicology information Online)
10. MEDLINE
• MEDLINE is Medical Literature Analysis Retrieval
System Online
• It is also called MEDLAR’S ONLINE(Medical Analysis
And Retrieval System)
• It is a literature database of life sciences and
biomedical information
• Introduced in 1971
• It includes articles on-
medicine,pharmacy,dentistry,veterinary medicine
and health care
• MEDLINE uses Medical Subject Headings (Mesh)for
information retrieval
• It can be searchable via PubMed & Entrez system
11. • PubMed(Publishers On Medicine)
• The NLM(National Library Of Medicine)maintains this
database
• PubMed is a free database comprises more than 22
million citations for biomedical literature, life science
journals
Eg :- GoPubMed ( explores matters on gene
ontology) FABLE,eTBLAT
Adv -gives answers for clinical queries
• IndMed-bibliographic database of peer reviewed
indian biomedical journals
Indian journal of Anaesthesia,Clinical Biochemistry
• Entrez-large integrated database
• Helps to enter many biological databases
