1. DISTRESSING EPISODES
Any long term assignment or selection of a profession right at its start requires the mix
of directions and willingness. In terms of pragmatism and heart breaking events, those
are essentially connected with professional difficulties/problems. In this section some
such incidents and events have been presented due to which some educators repented
on their initial decision to follow this profession. And ultimately they quit. The teacher
being not emotionally strong enough is considered to be a scum of the earth who
therefore is essentially looked down upon, due to his weak economic base. He is
addressed/called names like “Poor Master/ Helpless Master/Specie” etc.
At times, due to the prevalent nepotism and unjust treatment meted out to the teachers,
a hatred for the profession of teaching pops up amongst the youth. We hope that after
perusing these write ups the society on one hand it will ascertain the due economic and
social status of teachers, while on the other, the teachers too will review their negativity,
replacing it with self improvement., while uplifting and rising to the occasion through a
display of unblemished character, respect and honor.
NERVE WRECKING DISGRACE
Master Manzoor Ahmad
Once I had to visit a bank manager with a professor regarding the sale of school
prospectus, which was to be handed over to Bank Manager. On making the request to
him to get the prospectus unloaded, response was to unload it yourself and place it in
the strong room of the Bank. On entering into a dialogue, he said that you as a teacher
get only a small salary .How can you hesitate to carry the load? This was the treatment
meted out to the teachers on the official duty what to talk of private affairs. If the teacher
goes to purchase the chicken, he will get that but after a long wait patiently for hours,
since he is to purchase nothing more than half a kilo of meat. Likewise if the teacher
wants to be a tenant, he is confronted with conditionality that can be hardly fulfilled by
him. The teacher as a tenant is the last choice of the land lord.
2. UNFAIR DEPARTMENTAL POLICIES
Master Ashiq Ali
Education is considered most important for the development of a nation. Teachers have
been bestowed with this prophetic task with the intent to provide the nation with the
needed human resource for all walks of life including, engineers, legislators, doctors,
planners and the decision makers. But teachers don’t earn that kind of respect which is
due to them, especially in our country. In Army a matriculate enjoys the privilege of a
batman, where as a PhD in Education Department has no such benefit. In each and
every department officers get the car, accommodation for living and other fringe benefits
but in teaching only service is expected of the teachers. E.g. I was appointed as a PTC
teacher in 1986, there after passed CT, B.A and Bachelors of Education but am still in
grade 7 after 19 years. Due to some departmental policies, the salary of a group
included myself was stopped, I was not paid for three months and had to spend 1900
rupees from my own pocket, got the work done within a week, but the insult I had to
pocket was unbearable.
There is no legal protection for the builders of nation; they are even low paid than the
illiterate labor class. In army, a matriculate army man retires as Subedar Major or
sometimes as an Honorary Captain. In the Police Force a Constable retires as a Sub
inspector, in Government Departments a clerk of grade five may even retire as a
superintendent of grade 16, but in teaching Matriculates, Intermediate, Bachelors,
Masters and PhDs even may retire either in their own scale or may be one or two steps
above their original scale.
I have been teaching class 9th and 10th for the last 19 years. My students have been
passing and getting the positions among the MC schools for the last three years. My
department didn’t give me any regard and I was badly hurt. In the Department people
ask for any service but how the teacher can help and support any one. The scales of
the teacher are 7, 9, 14, 16 and 17 the permissible allowances are; medical 46%,
conveyance 42%- and house rent 45% of the basic pay. Children have no quota seats
3. in educational institutions Medical facility is not available to me. I am pulling along my
job only in distress.
NARRATION OF THE BROKEN WILL
Khalida Islam
Teaching is an experience of twice learning; learning and communicating go hand in
hand. It enables social, personal, and professional growth. Teaching enables us to pass
through variety of intellectual and emotional experiences. Some experiences prove to
be more encouraging where as some discourages us to the bottom.
After completing my masters, I started my professional carrier as an English teacher at
a primary school in the vicinity of Lahore. I was extremely motivated to make teaching
an ideal profession through my deeds and actions of truth, honesty, courage and
perseverance. I wanted to make the teaching profession bestowed with all the
characteristics I have learned.
The profile of the primary school where I had been working was totally against the
image I had made in my mind. There were five teachers in all including myself and the
Headmistress, all were matriculates with PTC. The school was without boundary wall.
Children used to come to school without washing their faces, changing of clothes and
bare footed. The children’s uniform, cleanliness, discipline and assembly were
nonexistent at school. I used to reach at school at about 7.30 a.m. after walking the
long and hazardous distance and to open the lock in time. Through effective
communication I tried to motivate and change the attitude of mothers of students
towards their wards’ education and bringing up. I used to have informed arguments with
them regarding the children’s protection from calumnious environment. I would tell the
mothers about the importance of discipline, time, cleanliness of body and soul in the
light of Hedith –i- Rasool, Sunnah and the Holy Quran. The response was very
encouraging. They opined that they had not seen teachers getting the things done from
the students, in such a short time and also enjoying what all the pupils were engaged in.
Their final comment is no less than a trophy for me; “We have seen such a teacher for
the first time; we are astonished that such a teacher even exists.”
4. There were two rooms in the school. One room was filled with the boxes containing
teaching aids; it seemed like a store, other was used as the classroom.
The teaching aids were simply dumped and never used. I took out the teaching aids and
asked the headmistress to convince other teachers to use these teaching aids but she
turned deaf ear to my request. This wastage of national resources put me in a curbing
situation.
I kept on teaching in my own way along side holding meetings with the mothers. At last
my words affected their minds. My teaching discussions and talk, with the passage of
time started taking position in the minds of mothers and children. The children started
coming in time, wearing neat and clean uniform and proper shoes.
Minds and the opinion of the residents of the area changed towards the school and
teaching, the other teachers had also been changed. School assembly started, the
students were made aware of the recitation of the Holy Quran and they started going to
the Madrasa for learning how to read and recite the Holy Quran. Over the span of time
the doors started opening and change became visible. I used to dust the benches with
my students, check the students’ copies in lunch time which was not acceptable to my
colleagues. I tried to convince them that cleanliness is half faith, our Holy Prophet
(PBUH) preferred to work with his own hands. We are the role models for our students;
we can make them understand through our gestures and actions. Actions prove more
powerful than words.
Hard work always pays and likewise a change crept in the teachers; they started
coming earlier, attending the children, made their expression pleasing loving and
striving to cover the syllabus by the annual examination. I was appointed at a school to
conduct fifth class examination by the Education Department. I had faced a variety of
experiences there. I used to go by wagon, where the old recognitions pointed at me,
exchange the expressions, signs and symbols. I did not like their conversations which
were below the level of a teacher, ultimately the objective of silent communication came
to the tongue; “how much you have paid for getting the job”? A senior teacher asked
me. I replied that I could not understand. She said “Don’t be so innocent, no one can get
5. job in the government sector without enticement and push”. I said with the wet eyes, “I
don’t know what you want to explore, I could get the job without such an odd obliga tion,
and I got the letter at home.” They inquired me as if I had been a criminal.
I didn’t talk to them and feeling the satire preferred to be quiet. I had been fighting all
alone the irony and unnecessary investigation to shake my faith and honest attitude. I
could not get the pay for two consecutive months then I asked the Headmistress; she
told that I should have to get the salary bill by myself. I went to the Education Office and
came to know that I will have to pay Rupees 300/- for getting the bill passed, I was
disappointed. I recalled the saying of the Holy Prophet which reveals who so ever bribes
and accepts would be sent to hell. I insisted that the remuneration is my right and I
would not pay a single paisa for its collection. I was told that the bill would not be
passed. I remained firm. For about one and a half year I had been traveling through
very odd situations. My father had been regularly visiting the Education Office but could
not get the bill passed. Traveling through 30 miles of Kacha roads it became unbearable
for me and the family. My brother compelled me to quit the job; difficulties at all places
shattered my will and perseverance. All my colleagues and the family members
suggested paying something and getting the salary, since nothing matures in the
government offices without illegal gratifications. I didn’t believe in selling my faith at any
cost, I was given the titles of foolish, childish, mismatched with the situations, since
government job can only be got by the fortunate. In spite of very severe opposition I
resigned from the post of a teacher (PTC) and felt relieved
MOTHER, SOCIETY AND TIME ARE THE TEACHERS
Masooma Shirazi
Teacher is a revolutionary character of society. Next to life the knowledge is the
greatest blessing. God introduced man with his two blessings in the first revelation; the
life and knowledge. It was the knowledge on the basis of which man was declared
superior to the angles and angles were asked to bow down before him. The one who
spreads the light of knowledge is the teacher. A personality with set aim, target and
6. dedication makes the teacher superior. As Hazrat Ali (RA) said that his parents brought
him to earth and his teacher raised him to the skies.
But, I saw the teacher falling prey to the public attitudes; it was not an incident but a
social disorder. I was the student of class five; my teacher belonged to a rich family and
was habitual to care the girls of rich families. I was among the top five students and the
one who was on the top of the list was ever neglected because of belonging to a poor
family. This act of the teacher made that girl fall among the average students; if I take
stock of the things I would say that it was the cruelty on the part of my teacher.
Becoming a teacher by passing through all the processes, I have started to make my
character, personality and line of action positive directions.
I am a poet bestowed with the traits of capturing and winning the hearts of the people. I
had a variety of experiences as a teacher, pleasing and satisfying are more in number.
In the workshop organized by Allama Iqbal Open University, a lady was the centre of
attraction of all the participants because of being well dressed, carrying cool mineral
water bottle and all other luxurious amenities. Next day on our discussion and sharing of
knowledge people tilted towards me till the last day this state of slant persisted. Tears
were seen in the eyes of many colleagues on the last day, this was the salute to the
hard work and not to the pomp and show. Students are the books which the teacher
writes, each word and line speaks the honesty or the dishonesty of the teacher. Many
books have been laid down in the inferior book shops. Had we written the stories of
love, devotion, satisfaction and achievement?
SOME BITTER MEMORIES
Dr. Muhammad Iyaz Khan
In 1986, M.A (Urdu, Islamic Studies) classes were started for which an amount of 70
thousand rupees was given as library grant for each subject. I was asked to prepare a
list of books of Islamic studies, being the head of the department. I prepared the list and
handed over to the Principal. The list included Reference Books, Tafaseers and
Encyclopedias and we purchased those books. Assistant Deputy Commissioner visited
our college and the library and objected the purchase of reference books. It was put in
7. the picture that these books are used for research and lecture preparation.Prof.
Abdullah Khan became the first Principal of Government College of Education, D.G.
Khan. He was asked to prepare and take lists of books to the Secretary Education at
Lahore and to collect the library grant.
8. Secretary Education initially objected the lists of books and said who reads these
voluminous books. Professor replied that we had ample time and we spare it for reading
such books. The Secretary Education smiled and eventually permitted the purchase of
books as per list.
I was the Principal of Government College, Alipur in 2001; I had to appear before the
Court in connection with the detention of Roll No by the Board of Intermediate and
Secondary Education, DG Khan. I was kept standing in the court. I sat on a chair after
getting tired but was asked to vacate the chair by the caller of the court. I told that I am
the Principal of Govt. College Alipur. He said that you people deserve no sympathy
since you charge for the tuition of our children. I was dolefully tired so I refused to
vacate the chair and remained sitting.
It was a tradition in Tehsil Tounsa of district DG Khan that the teachers used to teach
after school hours which has now turned into tuition. I was a student of Government
High School, Dera Ghazi Khan.I was in the tenth class in 1961.The school was closed
for summer vacations.
My teacher Mr. Atta Muhammad Sukhaira used to teach us English Grammar in the
morning from six to nine, but never charged any tuition fee. This practice made us
proficient in English.I appointed as the Principal at Govt. College Alipur in the last days
of my service. I used to travel from Dera Ghazi Khan to Alipur daily. I was asked to sit
on the front seat with the driver most of the times. One day the driver was away for
taking tea and I was sitting on the front seat. A person came and asked me to slip to
next seat and vacate the front seat for him. The driver saw and came running with a cup
of tea in his hand and made the same request to me, saying that he is our boss. I
thought he might be the owner of the van, but when the driver dropped him at a police
station. I came to know that he was an ASI. The driver said that they have to treat the
police exclusively.
In 1983, General Zia ul Haq came to DG Khan. He appointed the Divisional Officers
equal in rank to the Director of Division. The postings were completed by June. Mr.
Muneer Ahmad Qureshi was appointed as Director Education and me as Deputy
9. Director Colleges. The grant for education was allocated in the last week of June. The
grant was to be spent by 30th June, 1983. After working day and night and observing all
official formalities orders were placed. Next day when we reached the office audi t team
was present earlier than us for physical verification, since all the articles were not
present so they kept on insisting to see the articles. On failure to present the ordered
goods they provided us a list of their personal demands. This list included the transfers
of lecturers and induction of clerks and peons. The promise to transfer and appoint the
staff was made to reach an agreement.
A TEACHER SCARED OF PROTECTION
Shazia Anwar
Before I jot down a couple of bitter and sweet episodes of my life with reference to my
educational pursuits, I feel it would be better to come up with my introduction.
My name is Shazia Anwar and I belong to Mooch, District Mianwali. My ancestors have
their roots there for the last many centuries. The result of my B Ed examinations is
expected in these days and I am undertaking M.A (Political Science) Part two
examinations. My affiliation with Education Department is somewhat new and old.
Whatever this episode depicts as a narration by me and I seek your ordinance .You
people are the scholars and intellectuals and in your company, I can have an access to
the answers of my questions, I am sure these can be conveniently answered by the
scholars, educationists and learned people. Being a student of education, when I was
free from Matriculation examinations, I started giving tuition to the children of
elementary classes and also continued with my own studies. I passed my Matriculation
examination in Science and placed in first division. After this I was appeared in
intermediate examination and scored first division. I also managed my tuition academy
at my home. Then I was appointed as temporary teachers at Government Girls Higher
Secondary School Mooch. I teach classes from 6th to 2nd year. In short I have
experienced to teach every level and by the grace of Allah succeeded. I am obliged
to my teachers because where am I, it is because of their efforts, and the torch they
gave in my hand to emanate the road to success.
10. My teachers not only enabled me to earn the degrees but simultaneously polished my
personality gave me the confidence and made me a person of their excellence. My
teachers prepared the foundation of my intellectual personality in a very firm manner.
They gave me the objective and target of life. I salute all my teachers.
While teaching one does come across a number of incidents, that elevate a teacher's
self-esteem. I had a chance to work at my alma mater. I felt overjoyed to work with my
teachers as their colleagues. I didn’t feel any alienation since all people were known to
me. Welcome from the Principal was an encouraging factor. She introduced me to the
senior colleagues and guided me for the tasks of the teacher I had to do.
It was my perception that psychological principles should be followed to make teaching
effective. It is not possible to handle every, Tom, Dick and Harry with the same
yardstick. I had in my mind not to be so sweet or bitter; it should be a balance of the two
and replica of the Government slogan “Maar Nahi Pyaar”.
In the early days, I felt difficulty in handling the classes but later on it became easier for
me. If the teachers are friendly, it develops a very positive effect on the personalities of
the students. I not only delivered the content but developed the personalities of my
students through the experiences of life. I used to wish them first and that was quite
astonishing for my students but later on they adopted this practice them of wishing me
first, instead. I always gave the examples from the environment to which these students
belong to. I managed to translate the content into the activities and didn’t make the
students cram. I encouraged my students to observe, understand and then describe in
their own words. I asked them to look into their own personalities and find the answers
to the textual questions. I retreated that every student should do a good act every day
and share it with her friends. The news that appear in the newspapers were presented
before the students, they were asked to go through very good books and assure them
that who so ever would follow this channel will be a success in her life. The library was
kept open for the students, they were made confident to go and consult the books in the
library so that their inherent potential is revealed well. I made them realize their
capabilities and capacities and encouraged them to put it in practice.
11. I guided one of the students of class 10th who was just an average student in studies but
she had a good taste of literature. She was provided with a chance to express herself
as a debater; she earned 1st position in the competition and brought good name to the
school.
I always felt pleased that the change was being brought in behaving pattern of my
students. It was my thinking that the students should be made to realize the positive
qualities of their personalities and be confident to apply the knowledge learnt with the
blessings of Allah. My students are proving their worth and gaining the individual identity
in the society. It was a matter of pride for me to won the “Best Teacher Award”. I have
learnt a lot by attending meetings along with the Principal.
My students are proud on being my students. They admitted that I made them learn
through informal ways and helped them to bring an exquisite identity. You can very well
judge that this hard work become talk of the town and honored by the people of my
village.
My students were taking a test in General Science and one of them was copying very
daringly. I patted on her head and snatched the paper and asked to leave the room.
She took ill of my treatment and left the room giving me the warning of the dire
consequences. In the evening, the mother of that girl came to my house and made
exceptional hew and cry and repeated the same words uttered by her daughter. She
said that she is the niece of absconded “Sajjad” and they know how to take the revenge
and re-but the insult. Listening to the warnings my mother said, “You would not go to
school now. Nothing is more precious than respect”. I was forced to leave the school.
The principal called me on next day and said that you shouldn’t beat the girl, they are
immoral people. Say sorry to that girl. I was in a suspicion as everything was going
against the norms of justice. The student was at fault why the teacher should beg sorry.
I had been weeping and thinking that what did I do and what reward I could get.
I never thought of it that as a teacher I will be treated in such an insulting way. I will
have to clasp the hands before my student. Teaching is a very sacred profession and
knowledge is the last treasure of a Muslim.
12. The teachers form the basis of the future builders but the bases of the teachers are
badly shaken and effort is made to uproot those. The knowledge which does not change
the thinking and attitude towards life is of no use. The people in our area are more
inclined towards education but they don’t believe in putting the knowledge to practice,
the landlordism prevails in our area.
In Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Mooch some teachers came across
many ill-happenings. The students use to do the papers with the point of the knife, they
man handle the teachers and sometimes lock them in the rooms. These reflect the
mental attitude of the paralyzed society, this develops hatred in the people those who
are associated with the education. In the developed world teachers get a lot they are
paid at a very high rate the fringe benefits are also very attractive the respects they get
from the society is the bonus of all this. In our society teachers are said to be the slaves
and they are treated not as the human beings or the respectable members of the
society. The ruling mode prevails in all systems there is a need to change the system
and pay respect to the teachers. It is essential that teachers be provided with necessary
protection through practical and material measures.
You can well judge that after coming across such a heinous incident how can I continue
to be a teacher? I had been a good teacher know the pros and cons but I am so
annoyed with the education department that I don’t find the solution to my problem
even. The policies being implemented failed to give a respectable place to the teachers
in the society. How long it will continue?
SWEET & SOUR MEMORIES
Sheikh Muhammad Ishaq
I did my matriculation from Islamia High School Murree Road Rawalpindi in 1954. I went
to my school to collect my certificate, the Headmaster Khawaja Abdul Rehman (late)
asked me what would you do now, the admissions have been closed. He gave me a
letter and advised to visit the Principal, Gordon College Rawalpindi and gave me the
assurance that he will provide me financial assistance. I replied that there is no one who
would help me in getting education, the bread and butter is a problem at home.
13. Listening to my disappointing remarks, he offered a job of untrained matriculate teacher
from where I rose to the position of headmaster. In 1972 the school was nationalized
and I became the Headmaster in place of Khawaja Sahib. Right from 1976 to 2004 with
the exclusion of one and a half year, remained the Principal of Government Denny's
High School and retired from there.
In my opinion the profession of teaching gives the respect that is not possible by
spending huge amount, but it is conditional; the one who wants to be a teacher needs to
be honest, hardworking and profession loving. Teacher should be deputed to the
children, ignoring self. Children pay respect when they are grown up and enter in the
practical life. Teacher should take consideration of behavior modification of the students
and be an ideal example for them.
It is the tale of 1961, a student named Abdul Waheed had been studying in the school,
least bothered and interested in education, I made effort to make him realize and
understand but all in vain. I followed the boy to his residence and wanted to see
someone there. I came across a lady there who asked many questions about Abdul
Waheed; this made me sure that she is his mother. I requested her to make me sit. She
told me that she was the second wife of her husband, who was a Colonel. The father
and step siblings hate Abdul Waheed, they had never accepted him. I with a great
difficulty could see the Colonel. He insulted me a lot. He said, “Mind your own business;
you are getting your pay it should be more than enough for you”. He threatened me to
report to my department. I responded that I would report his full story to General Musa. I
came back disappointed. Next day Colonel came to me. I was teaching English to class
IX. He asked me to call his son; I replied it is of no use since he has insulted me a lot.
He apologized and Abdul Waheed was called to see his father. The father put his hand
on the head of his son and said this day onwards he is my son both of them wept. I
think that this was my duty. Abdul Waheed has retired as a high ranking officer from
UBL.
In 1969 I was superintendent examination. I suspected that a boy is impersonating
some other candidate. I wrote the Board but could get no reply. After the examination
the suspected boy came to my house and said please have pity on me, I am in hot
14. waters now a days. Listening to his story I had pity on him and got him a job as a
teacher at the school. Asked him to appear in F.A, gave him the fee amounting to
Rupees 80/- which he returned at the rate of ten rupees per month. He passed F.A in
first division and I asked him to apply for the commission in the Pak Army from where
he retired as a cornel and had been working as commando. Even today he is
appreciative of help and assistance extended to him.
Muhammad Imam passed his Intermediate Examination from St. Denny's High School
with flying colors. Giving him the certificate I asked him what he would do now. He said
no one is there to bear my educational expenses. I sent him to Gordon College to see
my teacher Muhammad Murat (late). He passed the Bachelors of Science degree with
good marks; I have been bearing his educational expenses. I asked him to do M.Sc.
and bore the expenses of education at University of Agriculture Faisalabad. In addition I
have been giving him pocket money, expenses of books, and note books. He passed
M.Sc. with good marks and currently working in the Science Foundation, on a high
profile job. His parents came to thank me, I am happy that I could pay back the noble
deed done by my teachers.
In the year 2000 I was deputed on an election duty which I performed. On being paid an
honorarium; I decided to purchase a wall clock for my personal use. I went to ‘Noam
Watch House’ to purchase it. I selected a wall clock. Thereafter I went over to the
payment counter to pay the price of the watch. There, a lady came over to me and
insisted that she would pay for the watch, I asked her as to why for she was a stranger
and that I don’t know her. She told that her husband was my student in 1963, and often
mentioned about me to her and her children in real good words of praise and often
acknowledged my efforts and hard work through which I helped my students, like
teaching the class till late at night at times. I saw you and decided to pay for the watch.
My husband out of respect for you hasn’t come near you and he also wants me to pay
for the wall clock.
So it was then that I came to know that amongst the shoppers was one of my former
students. The salesman requested me to honor these sentiments and let the lady pay
for the watch. And oblige. I was helpless but at the same time happy and emotionally
overwhelmed. I called my student over and patted him on the back and enquired about
15. his health and occupation and as to how was life treating him. I was glad to know that
he was leading a successful domestic and professional life. I thanked him and his wife
for the present to which to this day I attach a lot of sentimental value.
My Result of Intermediate had been excellent even superior to Gordon College. Director
of Education Side Abram Shah (currently EDO Sheikhupura) was those days appointed
in Rawalpindi. He visited the school with two officers, he was not known to me, school
was closed. I asked my friends to have lunch at Intercontinental Hotel, we were five
persons and when we tried to pay for, we were told that the payment has been made.
On inquiring I was told that the bill has been paid and we cannot tell the name of the
payee. On asking repeatedly we were told that the manager of the hotel is your student
he has made the payment. We were taken to his room he said that I was his guest and
he had the privilege to entertain his guests, since I know your habits that you don’t
accept anything from your students, so I kept away.
There are many experiences; now I am presenting some experiences;
One candidate was being sent the copying material from outside the college hall. My
director was supporting copying and I was ignorant of the fact. I was asked by the
headmaster to tear of the case of the boy since the director himself is involved in this
case. I refused to excuse the boy and reported the case on which he was punished by
the Board. Director reported to the Secretary Education that I am a drinker and fall down
in the school the boys make a fun of me. Secretary Education without any inquiry
transferred me from that school and didn’t post me at another place for a period of three
months. I kept sitting at home; I kept my self marking present in the office.
16. I was posted at a small school at Rawalpindi. Allah Almighty sent me to Hajj in those
days I used to pray to Allah that don’t sent me back if I am guilty of some offence and if I
had worked with honesty then send me with respect. Allah listened to my humble prayer
when I returned Mayor of Rawalpindi Haider Ali came across me in Raja Bazaar. He
asked me as to where was I posted those days. I told him about my whereabouts and
he came over to me three times but I didn’t apply for any type of relief. At last he
compelled me to make a request in writing and took it to Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad and
Mian Nawaz Sharif. An inquiry was ordered and my viewpoint was upheld and I was
absolved of all blame. Subsequently, I was sent back to St. Denny's High School.
Secretary Education of that time was Mahr Jewan Khan now he writes himself as an
educationist.
I was the member of the committee of Rawalpindi Board which was to settle the copying
case of the son of a Brigadier who was the professor at the Army Medical College,
Rawalpindi. On his answer book the Roll No of an intelligent student was written his
marks in Physics were 57 where as the number of the disputed student were 01. It was
difficult to say who did this how and at what place. The chairman Rawalpindi board was
insisting upon that let the copy and Roll number is as such of the disputed student. Me
and Mrs. Jilani the Principal of Viqar- un Nisa College wrote the decision according to
the conscience Chairman Rawalpindi Board got annoyed and issued the orders that I
should not be given any responsibility with the Board of Intermediate and Secondary
Education Rawalpindi.
At the time of declaration of the result I was invited to attend the ceremony and was
introduced to the Secretary Education Mr.Kamran as a reputed Principal, to whom I said
bluntly that he likes corrupt people, Secretary Education ordered to stop the
preferential treatment and put me on the reputed committees of the Board. Prof. Tariq
Munir of Government College Asghar Mall Rawalpindi and I, were members of the
discipline committee, of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education,
Rawalpindi. A case was brought before us.
17. The allegation was that all the examiners didn’t sign the paper of a female student. It
was possible to get the paper signed by the sub examiner, head examiner and all others
and there was also a chance to get the paper evaluated by the third examiner. We
wrote on the file that the student cannot be punished since it is not the case of copying.
The then, Chairman Dr. Zafar sent for us and insisted that the girl must be punished.
We both wrote on the file that the chairman insists upon that, the girl must be punished
but it is against our conscience. Chairman dismantled the committee and ordered the
Board staff not to give any assignment to us. Chairman issued the notification that both
Professors Sheikh Muhammad Ishaq and Tariq Munir have been debarred to undertake
any assignment of the board.
In 1996 Government St. Denny's Higher Secondary School was brought under the
control of the Board of Governors. The then Governor of the Province of the Punjab
Raja Saroop was an alumni of the school-in-point.. A scheme was to be started on
December 25, 1996 but unluckily he fell ill and had to move to America. I wrote to him
that had he come, the school would have benefitted. On his return Governor Raja
Saroop’s Secretary called; and informed me that I have been invited by the Governor for
a meeting at the Governor’s House at 1230 hours. However, the meeting commenced
at 1500 to 1600 hours and continued for one and a half hour and was a success in the
real sense. The Governor ordered Mr. Tasneem Noorani to reinstate the committee and
on return to my office I found the orders on my table.
Honest people are not respected and are often discouraged. Such seminars and write
ups may be of use provided that the honest personnel placed at the helm of affairs and
are given the responsibilities to run organizations in a reputable manner.
I am happy and a contended man. My children are obedient, respectful and hardworking
and doing well in life. My time passes well and in a pleasant manner. I have no financial
loans to be paid to anyone. All my family members have performed Hajj. Allah has given
us all necessities in life e.g. a bungalow, a car and not to mention the most important
thing in life … peace of mind.
