You can find deciduous forests in Europe (around 45-60°N).
A lot of deciduous forests have lost land to farms and towns.Although people are trying to protect the forests somepoachers are trying to kill the animals in the forests. Theanimals are losing their homes because of people buildingtheir homes
The annual rainfall in a deciduous forest is 30-60 inches ayear and the average temperature is 50°.The deciduous forest has four distinctseasons, spring, summer, autumn, and winter. In theautumn the leaves change color. During the winter monthsthe trees lose their leaves.
In deciduous forests there are five different zones. The firstzone is the Tree Stratum zone. The Tree Stratum zonecontains such trees as oak, beech, maple, chestnuthickory, and elm, basswood, linden, walnut, and sweetgum trees. The small tree and sapling zone is the secondzone. This zone has young and short trees. The third zone iscalled the shrub zone. Some of the shrubs in this zone arerhododendrons, azaleas, mountain laurel, andhuckleberries. The Herb zone is the fourth zone. It containsshort plants such as herbal plants. The final zone is theGround zone. It contains lichen, club mosses, and truemosses.
Producer- The producer is what starts the food chain. Inthis case an oak tree is the producer.Primary consumer-The primary consumer eats theproducer. Squirrel beetle bird and skunk is the Primaryconsumer.Secondary consumer-The secondary consume eats thePrimary consumer. Raccoon, Frog, Hawk ,and Vulture arethe primary consumer.Tertiary consumer- The Tertiary consumer is above all inthe food web. Wolf, fox ,and bear are all Tertiaryconsumers.
The animals adapt to the climate by hibernating in thewinter and living off the land in the other three seasons. The animals have adapted to the land by trying the plantsin the forest to see if they are good to eat for a good supplyof food. Also the trees provide shelter for them. Animal usethe trees for food and a water sources. Most of the animalsare camouflaged to look like the ground.
The plants have adapted to the forests by leaning towardthe sun. Soaking up the nutrients in the ground is also away of adaptation.
Animals use three basic strategies to deal with extremelycold temperatures in winter…..Migrate – get out of town beforethe cold sets in.Insulate – add thick fur to your coat.Hibernate or tolerate the cold by storing food ormanaging to survive freezing temperatures.
