The core of a social movement: people
organize and extend their activities beyond
the immediate confines of the group.
Types of Social Movements
• Reform Movement: attempts to change limited aspects of a
society but does not seek to alter or replace major social
institutions.
• Countermovements: designed to prevent or reverse the
changes sought or accomplished by an earlier movement.
• Revolutionary Movements: attempt to overthrow the entire
system itself, whether it is the government or the existing
social structure, in order to replace it with another.
6. IDEOLOGY
Ideology –a coherent system of beliefs, values,
and ideas that justifies its existence.
• An ideology helps frame the issue in moral terms.
• An ideology defines the groups interests and
helps to identify people as either supporters or
detractors, creating identifiable good guys and
villains.
• An ideology provides participants with a
collective sense of what the specific goals of the
movement are or should be.
7. SOCIAL MOVEMENTS
• Some sociologists argue that social
movements are actually more likely to arise
when social conditions begin to improve than
when they are at their worst.
• Effective organization is key to act socially.
• Mass media support is crucial.
• The most successful social movements are
those that are the best organized.
