Evaluation, question one.
1. EVALUATION: Question 1
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
2. -The key conventions of a student
magazine, and what the front
cover includes.
My student magazine contains a thorough amount of key conventions already used in
existing magazines. When researching different student magazines, I first observed the
house style and layout, identifying any similarities between the front covers. When
doing my research, I noticed that majority of student magazines follow the typical
house style which includes bright colours and interesting fonts, intriguing the target
audience to read the magazine. A puff is always included to target the reader into
buying the magazine; whether it be freebies, discounts, etc. The central image of a
student magazine is always portrayed in a positive way, whether it be of students
conveying a content approach, or of an idolized figure students may look up to, the way
in which the central image is portrayed connotes the nature of the magazine; as does
the masthead, house style and brand identity of the magazine.
3. -The typical contents page of a
student magazine
The contents page of a student magazine normally includes a number of secondary
images, reflecting the topics of the magazine. The house style of the front cover
continues throughout the contents page(s), using the same fonts and colours. In some
magazines, there is an editors introduction, delivering a basic overview of the
magazine. This creates a more welcoming approach. Also, the contents may be
broken up into topics; different sections for different aspects of student life.
4. - How have you included these
conventions in your magazine?
When designing my front cover and contents page, after observing the key conventions
of the typical student magazine, I attempted to include the similar type of conventions
used throughout. My front covers house style was black, with bright colours placed
over the top (e.g. masthead). The contrast of these colours made the magazine stand
out more; imploring the reader to buy. The central image portrayed a content student,
wearing the colours black and green. With my central image, I aimed to connote a
‘cool’ and sophisticated approach. My front cover included a puff; advertising the
chance to win festival tickets. By advertising a main interest of the typical students life,
this is an advantage to make the reader want to buy the magazine.
The contents page of my student magazine continues the same house style of the front
cover (Black and bold colours). I have used secondary images of students, artwork, and
exhibitions to connote an educational, yet laidback sense to the reader.
The puff of my magazine does not follow the typical layout of student magazines as it
is placed on the right hand side, along the edge of the magazine. Also, I haven’t
included an introduction from the editor as my magazine is aimed to be a less formal
read.
