The Man Who Took The Prize By Caroline Alexander
From George Washington to Odysseus, heroes come in a variety of forms. In The Man Who
Took the Prize written by Caroline Alexander, Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer, had the
goal of becoming the first to travel to the North Pole. However, after failing his mission, as Robert
Peary had beat him, he began racing for ...the most prestigious prize the world of exploration still
offered: the South Pole(Alexander). With this, he gathered his men and headed out for one of the
most obscure areas of the world preparing to enter a whole new world. And after suffering through
many hardships and complications on his adventure, Amundsen finally achieved his goal of being
the first to reach the South Pole. Thus, with his journey to the South Pole,... Show more content on

Amundsen was ...a man of towering ambition, prey to the same dangerous dreams and impulses
that drive all explorers to risk their lives in wild places (Alexander). The explorer had the
burning passion for adventure, and was ambitious enough to risk his own life for it a common
trait heroes possess. Without ambitious, heroes would be left cowardly, unsure, and unable to
complete their task to reach their goal as they do not have the driving force of determination and
ambition to pull them through. Thus, with Amundsen s naturally born interest and fiery
ambition for exploring, he was willing to put his life on the line in order in order to reach his
end goal of being the first to have traveled to the South Pole. Not only did the Norwegian display
ambition, he also was strategic and skillful throughout his exploration to the Arctic. BГёrge
Ousland, another Norwegian explorer, emphasized about how Amundsen ...always tried to learn
from others. He identified the problem, then looked to solve the problem (Alexander). Skill and
strategy is a vital trait for heroes as confronting a problem without a proper plan would end in
tragedy making one seem foolish and incapable. Therefore, with Amundsen being able to solve his
conflicts through careful thinking and by applying his knowledge, he proved to possess skill and a
strong understanding of strategic planning. Lastly, Amundsen seized compassion. He became
infatuated with exploration ever since reading about it as a boy, [and] has been fascinated by
Englishmen John Franklin s disastrous search for the Northwest Passage (Alexander), illustrating
Amundsen s early interest in his hobby. This early interest quickly grew, and soon drove him to
begin his adventure towards the South Pole. His compassion drew him on, and soon after fulfilling
his lifelong dream, Amundsen wrote in his diary... My boyhood

Non-Christian World View Definition
In today s society, young people are constantly being exposed to worldly influences through
children s media, including television, websites, video games, and movies. Topics such as gay
marriage, evolution, and abortion are presented to kids as facts or the cultural norm. Children are
naГЇve and young, and their hearts should be guarded from these secular ideas. The Biblical view
of the family is slowly being diminished, evolution is being taught as scientific fact, and many
children s media celebrities are openly showing support for their non Christian beliefs. Secularist,
atheist, and humanistic values are subtly, and sometimes even blatantly, making their way more
and more into children s media. The goal is to come into the home and... Show more content on

First of all, the idea of evolution completely refutes the creation story in Genesis. As to the
concepts of homosexuality and unmarried couples living together, the Bible clearly describes
how both of these are sinful. In Leviticus 20:13, to be gay or lesbian was considered an
abomination. In Hebrews 13:4, it is asserted that marriage is something that should be honored,
and God will judge the sexually immoral. Rowan Blanchard s arguments for abortion, gay rights,
and Planned Parenthood although they sound convincing on social media are very much opposed
to Christian beliefs. Abortion is taking the life of an innocent child who was specially formed by
God. In Jeremiah 1:5, it says Before I formed you in the womb I knew

Investing Personality Quiz
As an aspiring investor myself, I have a deep interest in anything that has to do with investing
strategies and research. I have always been intrigued by the flow of money, particularly within
the stock market, and how patterns can be analyzed and taken advantage of. I believe that a large
part of investing strategy has to do with memories of what has worked in the past and what has
not worked, as well as major events that can alter investing decisions. A person s natural skill and
discipline can also have a profound effect on their investment strategies and successes. With so
many factors influencing a person s investing success, I think that the Investing Personality Quiz is
an effective way of making one aware of their own strengths and weaknesses.
Memories are a pivotal component of a person s life as they essentially shape the way that they
look at the world. Due to the strong influence that memories have on a person s experiences and
decision making, they definitely inspire people to take a variety of routes along the path of
investing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of these two, I think that discipline ranks higher than natural skill on the totem pole of
importance. Natural skill is important for many investors and many even rely solely on their
natural skill and gut feeling, but it is not a universal trait that every good investor possesses.
Discipline, on the other hand, is a necessary trait of any good investor in my opinion. For example,
a disciplined investor will not take huge risks in the short term, but will risk enough when the
situation is right, making them successful in the long term. A investor with little discipline may
jump on the first big tip that he or she hears of and take a big loss due to a lack of discipline.
Discipline is easily the more important of these two traits for me simply because it is more

Essay On Coast Guard
The Extreme Reserve Commute
The extreme commute imposed on reservists is detrimental to both the member and the unit. Upon
first entering into the Coast Guard Reserves, members are placed at units that are within a
reasonable commuting distance. By working and drilling close to their homes, reservists are able to
easily commute and actively participate in reserve drills and activities while still maintaining their
busy schedules in their personal lives. When the Coast Guard imposes a mandatory Permanent
Change of Station of members when they advance, most times to locations outside of their
reasonable commuting distance, and at the members financial expense, it creates unnecessary
impacts for both the member and the Coast Guard. As reserve ... Show more content on

This causes many members to choose to either not want to advance or to unwillingly choose to be
placed in the IRR rather than accept orders. This is a great loss to both the Coast Guard and the
member. If members choose to depart, the Coast Guard now loses a valued member with training,
experience and subject matter expertise.
The Coast Guard has invested many hours of training and money in each Reserve member to try to
ensure that members are educated and capable of augmenting the Active component of the Coast
Guard and respond to emergencies as needed. The main purpose of the Coast Guard Reservists is
to train to deploy. It would be time and cost effective to be able to do that close to the members
home. The Coast Guard would benefit by retaining members at their current duty location instead of
transferring them upon advancing. At the Unit level, there would be a continuation of operations,
for the overall Coast Guard, the training and the money invested in preparing the member would
not be wasted. Members would be would be happier and continue to serve and be a productive

Electric Cars Are Becoming More And More A Part Of The World
Electric cars are becoming more and more a part of the world we are in today. They can see
them everywhere now a day from the streets to their TV. Car companies like Nissan and Chevy
have their own line up of electric cars that perform well. Then there is the popular car company
Tesla and they make the Lamborghini of electric cars. To help lower emissions levels and
jumpstart the industry, the federal government continues to offer a $7,500 tax credit for buyers
of pure electric vehicles.(Schaal, 2015) So with all these changes going on in the car industries
is it a good change from the traditional gas engine? Are Electric cars truly better than Gas
powered vehicles, are gas powered vehicles becoming obsolete. Electric cars barely have any
maintenance needed for them compared to gas powered vehicles. Emissions from electric cars
are zero to none and gas powered vehicles are getting better but they are not getting better fast
enough. Also range from an electric cars are manageable because they have free charging stations

maybe they are going to buy their next car and if they have one already given them some info
they did not know already. Maintenance on vehicles one of the main things they also do on their

Gang forms only require tie about every 4 to 5 feet on center. This system does require a
sizeable lay down area to construct the gang form. Once a certain gang is created it is lifted into
place and usually there is more gangs attached to another. Once the wall is poured and set the
form can be striped and if the gang section is not to odd of a section it can be placed exactly
where the next pour will be located. This helps to speed up the process setting walls and almost

A King Is The Ruler
A king is the ruler, the maker or laws, and is the heart and representation of a country. Dynasties
rise and fall, under the reign of their king. He is sometime called the chosen one, as he has the
power to either bring the country to its glory, or bring ruin and devastation. Thus, throughout the
history of Israel, the three kings Saul, David, and Solomon where all chosen by God, and each of
them had contributed to the development of the nation.
Before the time of the three kings, those who reign over Israel were the Judges. However, the
beginning of 1 Samuel unfolded the fading of their era (New International Version). By the time
the leadership lay in the hands of Eli and his ungodly sons, God had stopped speaking to them
and gave His guidance to Samuel (Hinson and Yates 163). Thus, in time, Samuel gained his
judgeship and led the nation to victory and peace. However, as he aged, the people wish to have
a king. Since Samuel son s did not proved to be faithful to the Covenant the way their father did,
the people believed it is necessary to requested for a king (Constable, Notes on 1 Samuel). They
claimed: (w)e want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead
us and to go out before us and fight our battles (1 Samuel 8: 19 20, NIV). Indeed, having a king
would give the power against other enemies. Nonetheless, the people of Israel ultimately failed to
understand that their true King, the one and only that helped them throughout

The Impact of Gambling in America
The Impact of Gambling in America The impact of gambling on the United States carries both
positive and negative effects into our society and communities. Gambling is a leisure activity that
usually provides excitement and fun for its players. Gambling also brings tremendous amounts of
money into the economy and provides employment. American cities such as Las Vegas and Atlantic
City thrive off of the gaming industry. Sure, gamblingcan be fun and exciting, but at what point
does that fun activity develop into a pathological problem? I will contend that the harmful side
effects of gambling far outweigh any positive aspects. Pathological gambling can destroy families,
careers, and lives. The reason why casinos are so successful... Show more content on

For example, in 1998 the bankruptcy rate in Atlantic City, New Jersey per 100,000 people was
1,019 while the rate of the state of New Jersey was only 555 (gao.gov). In 2003, there was a
proposal to add casinos into the mix of Kentucky s gambling options. Dr. John Kindt, a professor
of commerce at the University of Illinois said that bringing casinos to Kentucky would be bad
economics and bad social policy . Studies show that within the 35 mile feeder market around a
casino, gamblers will spend 10 percent less on food, 25 percent less on clothing and that 37
percent will dip into their savings to pay for gambling. For every three (video slot) machines, you
ll be losing two jobs from the feeder market economy, Kindt said. This occurs because each
machine can be expected to bring in $100,000 per year that will not be used elsewhere in the
economy (kybaptist.org). This is a serious issue that occurs when business owners do not think
about how their actions will affect others in the future.
Not only does gambling affect the economy of our communities, but it also has social effects.
There are many negative consequences of gambling, while there are minimal positive outcomes.
Beginning with the positive side, gambling is a recreation, a break from the everyday pressures
of life and a relief from stress. People feel good about themselves when they do hit a jackpot or
win big . Without gambling, certain sports such as horse racing and boxing would not be nearly as

Symbolism In Lord Of The Flies Analysis
His head opened and stuff came out and turned red. Piggy s arms and legs twitched a bit like a
pig after it has been killed (217). This is what can happen to someone when all signs of
civilization, order and power disappear and have no more meaning to members of a group or
society. In the writing of William Goldings Lord of the Flies (1954), the symbol of power and
civilizationis the conch. Once that is lost, all bets are off. When the novel begins, two boys are
talking about what has happened and why they are on this island. While walking on the beach,
the main character Ralph then proceeds to find a shell which the two boys call the conch.
Blowing on this shell Ralph calls a meeting where the boys lay out rules and decide they need a
signal fire to be rescued from this island on which there are no adults and no females. During the
meeting Jack, a choir boy, decides to organize a group of hunters to hunt for food. As the story
progresses, Ralph finds himself and Jack to be enemies. Then the lord of the flies begins to
emerge within the group, many of whom begin to take on savage behavior, and end up killing
Simon. Jack then decides to go and start his own tribe; he and a lot of the others do so. Even as
the conflict increases between the two rivals, there is ongoing respect for the conch. The same
savages later killthe character Piggy who was not doing anything to them except trying to get his
glasses back that were stolen to make the fire. Then they try to kill

leaders in General Electric (GE). The paper first introduces two leaders with some brief
biographies, characteristics and their contribution to the GE. It then looks at who would be the
more effective leader by providing with some aspects of leadership. It then comes up with some
skills these people employed in their leadership to help GE growth rapidly during 1990s till now.

Welch was a very good hunter for opportunities and also a good manager of risks and threats
while Immelt improved what Welch had. As a successful story in business management,
application of Six Sigma program in GE was spread over the world as one of the most valuable
lessons among businesses in the world relating to quality control. (see Appendix B, Story 1)
Above all, Welch was a ruthless taskmaster at GE. Immelt works with long term perspective
rather with a short term one. Immelt proved that he is a very effective leader by helping GE
overcome the hardship in 2001 when terrorist attacks on September 11 were a harbinger of bad
times to come for GE. (see Appendix B, Story 2)
It s really difficult to say this leader is better than another one. To compare and contrast them, in the
range of this paper, in terms of leadership, we would just use leadership styles, traits of emotional
intelligence that helped them become top leaders in the world.
2.1. Leadership styles
In the reign of Jack Welch during his 20 year at GE, a new leadership style was introduced and
spread companywide. Welch developed a ranking system that put employees in one of the three
categories. The top 20 percent were stars , the middle 70 percent were the crucial majority and the
bottom 10 percent were weeded out. Through his policy of differentiation, Welch was able to
separate those who

A University Of A Campus Statue Essay
Every day millions of people in the world are making an impact and difference that should be
recognized and honored. To continue, this is the reason why there are so many statues in the
world, including in art museums, in libraries, and even on the campuses of colleges, to show forth
the honor and respect people have towards them for making a difference in their lives. For
instance, a campus statue represents a symbolism to an individual who has made an impact on the
grounds of a college campus that will be remembered for a life time. In this case, Columbus State
Universitylocated in Columbus, Georgia, should have a campus statue in honor of a person who
brought so much life on the premises of this college that can impact every life that steps foot here.
However, there is a possibility of four people who can represent this statue: Callie McGinnis,
Robert Arnold, Walter Richards, and William Clifford Tucker. To begin, Callie McGinnis is
currently still present on Earth and was Columbus State University s first Dean of Librarianwho
moved to the city of Columbus, Georgia from New Orleans, Louisiana to work as a reference
librarian on July 1, 1974 to January 5, 2010. On the other hand, Robert Arnold was a public

The Bay of Pigs The plan Kennedy had was to overthrow Fidel Castro of the Cuban government,

innocent civilians killed in the bombing. If it was mapped out they wouldn t have died, and the
plan would have been more successful. Another thing Kennedy could have done was had it

What Is Multiculturalism In The Blind Side
We know that many movies bring up the issue of multiculturalism, especially between black and
white, such as The Blind Side. In the movie, the filmmaker seems to make a gap between black
and white by putting them in different areas. It seems that the suburban area belongs to black
society, while the midtown is white s. In this movie, black peopleare pictured to look like criminals,
and their lifes are messed up. Meanwhile, white peopleseem to have the perfect life; rich,
expensive cars, big houses, great schools, and so on. The feeling of being insecure grows among
these white people. To illustrate, Leigh Anne s friends tells her to be careful for keeping Michael in
the house. They picture Michael as a random black man who will rape Collins, Leigh Anne s

The idea of putting this scene in the beginning is to explain what the blind side means, as what
the title means. In football, quarterback is the one who leads the game by defining the things
that he sees only. Yet, somehow the quarterback does not know what may happen behind him.
Therefore, there is a left tackle whose job is to protect the quarterback from his blind side. In
other words, the blind side is the spot that cannot be seen by one. In this scene, there are only a
few things that can be discussed regarding to the stage setting, because it shows the usual sport
matches what we usually watch. The set takes place in a football field, the players wear their

Evolution Of Moths Research Paper
When you say the word Moth , you think about the winged insects that hang around the light on
your porch or yard. Moths can be different in color, shape, or even size. This was also said by
David Moskowitz. These winged insects are food for bats or birds. Some cultures in the world
even eat moths, moths can pollinate plants. In the United States there are up to 10,000 to 11,000
mothspecies. If you see a flower that looks fragrant and white, example a yucca plant, it was most
likely pollinated by the moths. Bats use moths as food to fill them up at night. In other cultures
around the world, people use moths as protein to satisfy them. In some african countries it is
common to eat moths for protein.
( Butterflies and Moths of North America) In some countries there are complaints of moths eating
clothes and that they have destroyed blankets or even carpets. They can also be referred to as
Webbing Clothes Moths . These moths can be a ВЅ inch long, and do not like light much. It might
be best to keep clothes out of closets or drawers. These moths might prefer animal based Materials.

A Comparison Of Faith And The Future Of Religion
A Comparison of Faith
Faith, defined as a strong belief in something which cannot be proven, has been argued over
countless generations. Still, even without proof, individuals worldwide hold true to their faith each
day. After studying faith and religion in texts written by scholars with varying backgrounds, it is
easy to see faith is something which is widely disputed. Comparison of Sigmund Freud s The Future
of an Illusion and Paul Tillich s Dynamics of Faith, fully displays the discrepancies in points of
view on the function of faith, as well as the necessity of faith, in society; while the comparison of
Viktor E. Frankl s Man s Search for Meaning and Karl Marx s on the Future of Religion,
demonstrate both similarities and differences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout his book, Tillich references faith as an ultimate concern to emphasize the importance
of faith in the personality of individuals. Furthermore, Tillich believes faith is a vital part of human
nature and that even the rejection of faith is, in itself, an act of faith. This displays Tillich s
understanding that faith will never disappear from society because it is a piece of the puzzle in
what makes up humanity (Tillich).
After summarizing both arguments, discernibly Sigmund Freud and Paul Tillich would hold
opposing views on both the function of faith and the future of faith. The disagreement would begin
with the function of religion in society, displayed when Tillich writes, The question raised by this
book is whether such belief is based on insight or on misunderstanding, and the question is
unambiguously that the rejection of faith is rooted in a complete misunderstanding of the nature of
faith (146). Freud believes religion is man being immature, but Tillich feels differently. Tillich
perceives the rejection of faith as the misunderstanding of the true nature of faith. If Tillich and
Freud were to hold a debate, Tillich would most likely discuss how Freud misunderstands faith s
nature. Freud, however, would respond with a discussion about how faith is man looking for
security in the world.

Art Education For Public Schools Persuasive Slice
Outline: Art Education for Public Schools Persuasive Slice Brain experimentation confirmation is
one of the several proofs education as well as commitment in fine arts is constructive for a child s
educational process. Beginning from an improved clarity and creativity in being able create ideas
to increased awareness in mind, body, voice, artseducationhas had a tremendous impact. In its
several ways, it supports the advancement of the whole child along with preparation of a life filled
with opportunities for learning and delight. Art educationis sadly interpreted as more of a luxury
rather than a must to a child s education; although research has proved that simple, creative
activities serve as essential building blocks for a student s future development. In addition, the fine
arts provide students non academic aid such as an increase in self esteem, motivation, improved
emotional expression and appreciation in diversity. Students cherish that their voice and interests
are listened to and understood by others. Children gave form to their feelings through drawing and
paintings. All fibers are highly important for a young mind, so why is art not a part of a student s
curriculum? In these past few years, there has been big concern between educators in the
relationship in arts based learning and human development. The arts construct neural systems
building a variety of profits running between fine motor skills to creativity and enhanced emotional

consider these reasons to be valid?
The rapid development of technology and in other areas have led companies ability to replicate
products more easily, and the rapidly expansion of the service sector has led the nature of
consumers to demand high quality at the lowest prices. Both of these highlight the importance of
gaining the competitive advantage through the labour force. A method through which a company
could obtain this edge, is through training and development of their various skills. Its
implementation and management concerns many concepts, esoteric and thus hard to emulate.

Training was also seen to enhance job motivation under certain conditions: there was a practical use
to the training and this had been clearly depicted to them (Heyes, Stuart).
Alternatives to T D are to poach employees from other rivals, or acquire employees through the
expensive recruitment and selection process who has the requisite skills required premium must be
paid.
The former is a large barrier to the T D initiative as the benefits accrue to the company and the
employee. The rival can potentially poach your trained employees. This is known as the Prisoner s
Dilemma, due to which many companies in the UK do not invest in human resource development
(Sisson, Storey). The use of temporary or outsourced employees will not only be harder to train as
they may deemed unworthy of investment due to their movement ability, they may be not able to
provide the high quality service. Though companies outsourcing their call centres seem to be
providing them the necessary service. But these operators in India cannot replicate the highly
customer orientated service that British call centres can provide i.e. speaking to Yorkshire people
in their own dialects this would require training. Employees are going to become trained whether
the initiative is taken or not as with time they will gain tacit knowledge and they will pick things
up by sitting next to Nellie over time. This is very inefficient, and a focused

Essay On College Athletes Are Not Paid
College athletes have always been worked beyond imagine, and it is ridiculous to think that even
in today s society, college athletes are not paid. Unlike regular college students, student athletes
are not able to work jobs or make extra money because they put over forty hours a week in to their
respective sport. More often than not collegeathletes are taken advantage of because they put their
bodies at risk for injury and have no insurance or income to make it worthwhile. Of course, some
college athletes do go on to make millions of dollars, but that is only the case for a small
percentage of college athletes, and since college sports brings in billions of dollars a year, college
athletes should earn at least a small profit. Furthermore,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Allen Sack, athletes are already essentially paid to play, by getting to go to college
for free, but they also deserve the same rights and benefits as other employees, which could
include medical benefits, workers compensation when injured, and the right to build financial
security for their family while in college, and the denial of these rights is morally
unconscionable (Sack). It does not make sense that college athletes are not paid because these
athletes are the sole reason for popularity in the college athletic apparel market, which brings in
millions of dollars a year, yet college athletes do not see a dime, even though they are the reason
for sold jerseys and other apparel. Even worse is the fact that college athletes are prone to getting
injured and a rising star with a great future ahead of him or her can have their contract
(scholarships) canceled once a school realizes that they will no longer be bringing value or money
to their school. Of course, this sounds cruel, but it is the reality for some college athletes, and it is
an option that must be extinguished because not only do regular students deserve reassurance and
stability, but college athletes do

Adult Gaudy
I just got done reading this passage that talks about a couple that wants to get divorced. During
the passage the couple get into an argument about being grown up. The woman named Luci says
No worries I believe we re both adults here and the man named Lon responds with Believe what
you want that right there shows that this couple does not like agreeing with each other and that
Lon is sort of childish because of his sarcastic response. So they talk and argue with each other for
a couple more lines then Lon comes out and says Just because you re eighteen, that doesn t mean
you re an adult. Neither does being fifty six. In fact, I think people pretend to appear responsible

Some of the stuff that he said is true but when you are old enough to live alone you kind of have
to have responsibilities. As we get older we have to learn how to rely on ourselves and how to
take charge of our responsibilities. Lon said we just pretend to appear responsible because that s
what we believe an adult is. I think this statement is wrong because if an adult doesn t become
responsible they will suffer a lot in there lives. For example there comes a point in everybody s
lives when our parents don t and maybe can t take care of us any more, so we have to go and get
jobs, buy a home, get a career, and stuff like that. If an adult doesn t do this than what will come
from their future they wouldn t be able to do anything. Another reason why I don t agree with
Lon s statement is because when he said Just because you are eighteen, that doesn t mean you re
an adult . I don t agree with this because in the United States of America once you turn eighteen
you are officially an adult. You can get a job, you can own your own home, you can do so many
other things. My dad told me once I turn eighteen I am going to have to start working to pay for
bills. I hope he was just joking but that s not the point because once you turn eighteen you get a lot
more responsibilities and that s the age your parents try and let you care for

Public Victory
Why is it important to master private victory before public victory? The victories you make for
yourself are a requirement before you are able to make any progress toward being better with
others. As the book said, you need to get your act together before you can be a team player. One
example being productivity, it gets you in the habit of getting the work you need to be done
before going on to the less pressing matters. Getting rid of common bad habits is a big step.
Reacting and blaming issues on your parents, friends, or even the government won t help you
around others. Taking responsibility and assessing yourself before others is a necessity if you are
going to be, for example, working on a team to develop the new popular app. Overall,

Communication And Its Effects On Employees s Perceptions...
Introduction
Communication and its effects on employee s perceptions towards organizational changes have
been extensively studied. Communication, if poorly managed, can lead to negative consequences
including employee s frustration, uncertainty, change contempt (Frahm Brown (2007), Bordia,
Hunt, Paulsen (2004)), psychological strain, low job satisfaction, and increase in turnover intention
(Bordia, Hunt, Paulsen (2004)). If effectively managed, communication can result in multiple
positive effects such as employee s positive perception towards change process, change acceptance
(Frahm Brown (2007)), perception of justice within the organization (Nese (2014)), and change
based momentum (Jansen (2004)). In this paper, I would like to explore how two communication
approaches programmatic and participatory can be used to improve employee s positive
perceptions towards organizational changes. The paper is divided into three sections. It starts with
a summary of employee s perceptions towards organizational changes. The effects of
communication on employee s perceptions towards organizational changes will follow. The last
section is a comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of programmatic and participatory
approaches through the analysis of empirical studies.

The Challenges Of Remocial Diversity In Fashion And Fashion
You are looking at yourself in the mirror, making those final adjustments before your audition.
Walking up the steps and it s finally your time to show off your beauty and you read a sign of
destruction that pauses your steps.
Netflix movie Supermodel a young girl from the Brooklyn housing projects goes from the

in the high stakes world of fashion and beauty. Things aren t always as pretty and glamorous as

Diversity is a big word in fashion right now, but it can be hard to tell how committed the industry

of races and ethnicities, there s still a journey to achieving anything resembling an accurate
reflection of the myriad people out there. Let s not forget that breaking into the modeling industry
is hard no matter what. Do you know it s more challenging to do so as a person of color?
Little has been said about the challenges black model s face once they make it past the casting stage.
African American women face racial diversity because of the shade of their skin, the texture of
their hair, or the sizes of their bodies. When a model of color get hits from all directions and

Lethal injection is now almost the main method of execution in the US, with all but one of the 39
executions carried out during 2013 being by this method. Deadly injection changes from state to
state.Normally, the prisoner is strapped to a gurney or a fixed execution table, rather than an
operating room table by leather or webbing straps over the body and legs. All the chemicals used in

Ethical Theory Of Deontology
Ethical Theory
Deontology is morals of obligation where the ethical quality of an activity relies upon the idea of
the activity, i.e., hurt is unacceptable regardless of its results (McKenna, 2014). This idea was
presented by a philosopher, Immanuel Kant and subsequently broadly alluded as Kantian
deontology. The choice of deontology might be proper for an individual, however, do not really
create a decent result for the general public (McKenna, 2014). The specialist understanding
connection or relationship is by nature, deontology rehearse is broken, the setting of restorative
carelessness emerges. This convention drives clinicians to do great to patients, reinforcing the
doctor patient bond. The ethical theory of deontology does not look primarily at consequences of
actions, but examines a situation for the essential moral worth of the intention of the act, or
wrongness of the act. This theory of duty based ethics would apply to the issue of restrictive
restraint since ethically, the action of when to use or not to use restraint is dependent on the nurse s
intent as opposed to the consequence (McKenna, 2014). Morally, limiting a client s freedom of

Analysis Of Julio Cortazar s Short Story Axolotl
In Julio Cortazar s short story, Axolotl, the young man is searching for answers to his life. He finds
these answers in the small, Mexican salamander trapped within its enclosure at the Jardin. The
axolotl challenges the young man to see the simplicity behind the mysterious guise of the small
amphibian. The young man s daily visits to the Jardin only make the appeal of the axolotls greater.
In those visits he begins to see not only the creatures simplicity, but also their neotenous tendencies
and connection to death; all of which contribute to his association and union with them. Although
he is a friend of lions and panthers, his usual draw to nature is lacking. He finds himself unsatiated

Simplicity is an integral part of the young man s union with the axolotl. But the simple creature
the man comes to know and admire could not be without its neotenous characteristics. As the
salamander grows it never reaches adulthood and seemingly never ages. In this feature of the
axolotl, the young man comes to the realization that death is a part of life for all men. He is
scared of facing aging and dying, unsure how to react or feel about the unknown, and wants to
avoid the question that all men hate to face. Looking to the axolotl for answers, he gets a
paradoxical result. The animal that never ages, the animal he transforms into to escape the
question of death, is a representation of death. The axolotl is lonely, immobile, seemingly lacking
life, inexpressive, and unable to communicate, all things we associate with death. Somethings
cannot be understood until you have personally faced the trials yourself. No living man has
experienced dying, but all have experienced death. Similarly, the young man cannot truly begin to
know what it is like to be the caged axolotl until he has been there. All his insecurities as a human
disappear and his life as a simple axolotl begins. At last the young man can feel what the axolotls
feel. All human understanding vanishes like dust in the wind. He stands still like all axolotls do, a
prisoner looking for a purpose. The young man can see now that the axolotls have devoured his
humanity.

The Latin Of Latin Language
The written Latin language changed minimally from the time it was used in Antiquity to the time it
was used in the Medieval Era due to it not being spoken frequently in everyday situations. Instead
of learning Latin by hearing others speak it, just as one learned Old English or French during this
time, one needed to have a connection with the Church in order to be taught the language, or they
needed to hear others speak it. The Latintaught by the Church was undeviating throughout Europe,
and as a result all students learned the same Latin for centuries. However, common people who
were uneducated still spoke the language as a second language during the early medieval era, and
because of their lack of education in the language, the grammar became less steadfast and the
spelling saw some changes. Although the written Latin languagedid not evolve as drastically as it
had the potential to, it underwent certain grammatical changes that were set off by Jerome s use of
altered grammar in the Latin Vulgate. Jerome borrowed constructions from the other languages the
Bible had been written in and other authors used these alterations later. As a result, these altered
constructions, which had gone unchanged for hundreds of years, were made permanent in time
because the Vulgate was a broadly used resource for Latin. If it had not been for Jerome s initial
changes in the grammar of the Latin in the Vulgate, then Latin would not have evolved and would
have stayed even more similar to the

Nature of the disease Celiac disease is a fairly common disease but is not very well known.
Celiac disease, or celiac sprue, is a digestive condition triggered by consumption of the protein
gluten (Hill, Clinical manifestations and diagnosis of celiac disease in children, 2011). Gluten is a
protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and oats. People with celiac disease who eat foods containing
gluten experience an immune reaction in their small intestines, causing damage to the inner surface

The Vietnam War On The United States
The Vietnam War is a more frequently and familiar name for the Second Indochina War. It was the
longest war America has fought in. The Vietnam War had an impact on the American people, since
it was the first war to ever be broadcasted on television. The country was able to see what was
happening on the battleground. This war would have lasting effects on the United States and the
nation it divided. The Vietnam war started way before America became involved (1955 1975).
Indochina, which included Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, were all under French colonial rule. The
Vietnam communist nationalist, Vietminh, fought for freedom from the French. The United States
sent resources to France to help them defeat the communist risk. In 1961, when John F. Kennedy
was inaugurated, the Vietnam war was not a substantial issue. However, Vice President Johnson
was sent to Vietnam. Upon his return, he urged Kennedy to grab hold of the conflict. Kennedy
decided to send special forces instead of sending combat troops. Kennedy s secret advisors
reported to him that Aerial spraying of herbicides were used to starve the Vietcong of their food

Age Specific Reproduction
The effects of age specific breeding and matriarch presence on elephant reproduction
Introduction
Although Robinson et al. was not able to determine the overall the long term effects of early life
reproduction, they provided results that show the immediate effects of age specific reproduction.
The impact of reproduction on younger females is an important part of elephant survival, however,
it is the impact of reproduction over time that provides understanding of the future of elephant
populations. In order to show the later life effects of reproduction, Hayward et al. studied the
survival of calves and annual breeding success of elephants throughout their lives and into their
older age.

produced a study that examined the later life consequences of breeding on a population,
particularly breeding early in life. Hayward et al. also used the Myanmar timber camp Elephas
maximus to perform the research, looking at the records of 416 reproductive captive born
mothers and their offspring. The elephants used were from 8 regions of the Myanmar timber
camps with the youngest breeding being 5 years of age and the oldest being 53. The mean age
at the first birth of offspring was 19.48 years with the maximum number of lifetime calves being
10 calves. Hayward et al. discovered that individuals who didn t produce calves before the age of
19 had lower calf survival than those who produced one or more calves before the age of 19.
Although beginning reproduction earlier in life is correlated with a shorter lifespan, the cost is
outweighed with higher annual breeding success as well as increased calf survival (Hayward et
al). The investment of energy and resources into breeding at an early age increases the chance of
calf survival but also results in shorter lifespans compared to those who begin reproduction later
in life (Hayward et al.). Based on the findings, the costs of early life reproduction are offset by
higher lifetime breeding success in younger elephants. The breeding success of younger elephants
can be attributed not only to early reproduction, but also to older females in a herd. While

  • 2. The Man Who Took The Prize By Caroline Alexander From George Washington to Odysseus, heroes come in a variety of forms. In The Man Who Took the Prize written by Caroline Alexander, Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer, had the goal of becoming the first to travel to the North Pole. However, after failing his mission, as Robert Peary had beat him, he began racing for ...the most prestigious prize the world of exploration still offered: the South Pole(Alexander). With this, he gathered his men and headed out for one of the most obscure areas of the world preparing to enter a whole new world. And after suffering through many hardships and complications on his adventure, Amundsen finally achieved his goal of being the first to reach the South Pole. Thus, with his journey to the South Pole,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Amundsen was ...a man of towering ambition, prey to the same dangerous dreams and impulses that drive all explorers to risk their lives in wild places (Alexander). The explorer had the burning passion for adventure, and was ambitious enough to risk his own life for it a common trait heroes possess. Without ambitious, heroes would be left cowardly, unsure, and unable to complete their task to reach their goal as they do not have the driving force of determination and ambition to pull them through. Thus, with Amundsen s naturally born interest and fiery ambition for exploring, he was willing to put his life on the line in order in order to reach his end goal of being the first to have traveled to the South Pole. Not only did the Norwegian display ambition, he also was strategic and skillful throughout his exploration to the Arctic. BГёrge Ousland, another Norwegian explorer, emphasized about how Amundsen ...always tried to learn from others. He identified the problem, then looked to solve the problem (Alexander). Skill and strategy is a vital trait for heroes as confronting a problem without a proper plan would end in tragedy making one seem foolish and incapable. Therefore, with Amundsen being able to solve his conflicts through careful thinking and by applying his knowledge, he proved to possess skill and a strong understanding of strategic planning. Lastly, Amundsen seized compassion. He became infatuated with exploration ever since reading about it as a boy, [and] has been fascinated by Englishmen John Franklin s disastrous search for the Northwest Passage (Alexander), illustrating Amundsen s early interest in his hobby. This early interest quickly grew, and soon drove him to begin his adventure towards the South Pole. His compassion drew him on, and soon after fulfilling his lifelong dream, Amundsen wrote in his diary... My boyhood ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Non-Christian World View Definition In today s society, young people are constantly being exposed to worldly influences through children s media, including television, websites, video games, and movies. Topics such as gay marriage, evolution, and abortion are presented to kids as facts or the cultural norm. Children are naГЇve and young, and their hearts should be guarded from these secular ideas. The Biblical view of the family is slowly being diminished, evolution is being taught as scientific fact, and many children s media celebrities are openly showing support for their non Christian beliefs. Secularist, atheist, and humanistic values are subtly, and sometimes even blatantly, making their way more and more into children s media. The goal is to come into the home and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, the idea of evolution completely refutes the creation story in Genesis. As to the concepts of homosexuality and unmarried couples living together, the Bible clearly describes how both of these are sinful. In Leviticus 20:13, to be gay or lesbian was considered an abomination. In Hebrews 13:4, it is asserted that marriage is something that should be honored, and God will judge the sexually immoral. Rowan Blanchard s arguments for abortion, gay rights, and Planned Parenthood although they sound convincing on social media are very much opposed to Christian beliefs. Abortion is taking the life of an innocent child who was specially formed by God. In Jeremiah 1:5, it says Before I formed you in the womb I knew ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Investing Personality Quiz As an aspiring investor myself, I have a deep interest in anything that has to do with investing strategies and research. I have always been intrigued by the flow of money, particularly within the stock market, and how patterns can be analyzed and taken advantage of. I believe that a large part of investing strategy has to do with memories of what has worked in the past and what has not worked, as well as major events that can alter investing decisions. A person s natural skill and discipline can also have a profound effect on their investment strategies and successes. With so many factors influencing a person s investing success, I think that the Investing Personality Quiz is an effective way of making one aware of their own strengths and weaknesses. Memories are a pivotal component of a person s life as they essentially shape the way that they look at the world. Due to the strong influence that memories have on a person s experiences and decision making, they definitely inspire people to take a variety of routes along the path of investing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of these two, I think that discipline ranks higher than natural skill on the totem pole of importance. Natural skill is important for many investors and many even rely solely on their natural skill and gut feeling, but it is not a universal trait that every good investor possesses. Discipline, on the other hand, is a necessary trait of any good investor in my opinion. For example, a disciplined investor will not take huge risks in the short term, but will risk enough when the situation is right, making them successful in the long term. A investor with little discipline may jump on the first big tip that he or she hears of and take a big loss due to a lack of discipline. Discipline is easily the more important of these two traits for me simply because it is more important to more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay On Coast Guard The Extreme Reserve Commute The extreme commute imposed on reservists is detrimental to both the member and the unit. Upon first entering into the Coast Guard Reserves, members are placed at units that are within a reasonable commuting distance. By working and drilling close to their homes, reservists are able to easily commute and actively participate in reserve drills and activities while still maintaining their busy schedules in their personal lives. When the Coast Guard imposes a mandatory Permanent Change of Station of members when they advance, most times to locations outside of their reasonable commuting distance, and at the members financial expense, it creates unnecessary impacts for both the member and the Coast Guard. As reserve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This causes many members to choose to either not want to advance or to unwillingly choose to be placed in the IRR rather than accept orders. This is a great loss to both the Coast Guard and the member. If members choose to depart, the Coast Guard now loses a valued member with training, experience and subject matter expertise. The Coast Guard has invested many hours of training and money in each Reserve member to try to ensure that members are educated and capable of augmenting the Active component of the Coast Guard and respond to emergencies as needed. The main purpose of the Coast Guard Reservists is to train to deploy. It would be time and cost effective to be able to do that close to the members home. The Coast Guard would benefit by retaining members at their current duty location instead of transferring them upon advancing. At the Unit level, there would be a continuation of operations, for the overall Coast Guard, the training and the money invested in preparing the member would not be wasted. They can see them everywhere now a day from the streets to their TV. Car companies like Nissan and Chevy have their own line up of electric cars that perform well. Then there is the popular car company Tesla and they make the Lamborghini of electric cars. To help lower emissions levels and jumpstart the industry, the federal government continues to offer a $7,500 tax credit for buyers of pure electric vehicles.(Schaal, 2015) So with all these changes going on in the car industries is it a good change from the traditional gas engine? Are Electric cars truly better than Gas powered vehicles, are gas powered vehicles becoming obsolete. Electric cars barely have any maintenance needed for them compared to gas powered vehicles. Emissions from electric cars are zero to none and gas powered vehicles are getting better but they are not getting better fast enough. Also range from an electric cars are manageable because they have free charging stations all throughout the U.S. they getting to know all this information can hopefully educate they when maybe they are going to buy their next car and if they have one already given them some info they did not know already. • 8. A King Is The Ruler A king is the ruler, the maker or laws, and is the heart and representation of a country. Dynasties rise and fall, under the reign of their king. He is sometime called the chosen one, as he has the power to either bring the country to its glory, or bring ruin and devastation. Thus, throughout the history of Israel, the three kings Saul, David, and Solomon where all chosen by God, and each of them had contributed to the development of the nation. Before the time of the three kings, those who reign over Israel were the Judges. However, the beginning of 1 Samuel unfolded the fading of their era (New International Version). By the time the leadership lay in the hands of Eli and his ungodly sons, God had stopped speaking to them and gave His guidance to Samuel (Hinson and Yates 163). Thus, in time, Samuel gained his judgeship and led the nation to victory and peace. However, as he aged, the people wish to have a king. Since Samuel son s did not proved to be faithful to the Covenant the way their father did, the people believed it is necessary to requested for a king (Constable, Notes on 1 Samuel). They claimed: (w)e want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles (1 Samuel 8: 19 20, NIV). Indeed, having a king would give the power against other enemies. • 9. The Impact of Gambling in America The Impact of Gambling in America The impact of gambling on the United States carries both positive and negative effects into our society and communities. Gambling is a leisure activity that usually provides excitement and fun for its players. Gambling also brings tremendous amounts of money into the economy and provides employment. American cities such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City thrive off of the gaming industry. Sure, gamblingcan be fun and exciting, but at what point does that fun activity develop into a pathological problem? I will contend that the harmful side effects of gambling far outweigh any positive aspects. Pathological gambling can destroy families, careers, and lives. The reason why casinos are so successful... For example, in 1998 the bankruptcy rate in Atlantic City, New Jersey per 100,000 people was 1,019 while the rate of the state of New Jersey was only 555 (gao.gov). In 2003, there was a proposal to add casinos into the mix of Kentucky s gambling options. Dr. John Kindt, a professor of commerce at the University of Illinois said that bringing casinos to Kentucky would be bad economics and bad social policy . Studies show that within the 35 mile feeder market around a casino, gamblers will spend 10 percent less on food, 25 percent less on clothing and that 37 percent will dip into their savings to pay for gambling. For every three (video slot) machines, you ll be losing two jobs from the feeder market economy, Kindt said. This occurs because each machine can be expected to bring in $100,000 per year that will not be used elsewhere in the economy (kybaptist.org). This is a serious issue that occurs when business owners do not think about how their actions will affect others in the future. Not only does gambling affect the economy of our communities, but it also has social effects. There are many negative consequences of gambling, while there are minimal positive outcomes. Beginning with the positive side, gambling is a recreation, a break from the everyday pressures of life and a relief from stress. People feel good about themselves when they do hit a jackpot or win big . Without gambling, certain sports such as horse racing and boxing would not be nearly as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is what can happen to someone when all signs of civilization, order and power disappear and have no more meaning to members of a group or society. In the writing of William Goldings Lord of the Flies (1954), the symbol of power and civilizationis the conch. Once that is lost, all bets are off. When the novel begins, two boys are talking about what has happened and why they are on this island. While walking on the beach, the main character Ralph then proceeds to find a shell which the two boys call the conch. Blowing on this shell Ralph calls a meeting where the boys lay out rules and decide they need a signal fire to be rescued from this island on which there are no adults and no females. During the meeting Jack, a choir boy, decides to organize a group of hunters to hunt for food. As the story progresses, Ralph finds himself and Jack to be enemies. Then the lord of the flies begins to emerge within the group, many of whom begin to take on savage behavior, and end up killing Simon. Jack then decides to go and start his own tribe; he and a lot of the others do so. Even as the conflict increases between the two rivals, there is ongoing respect for the conch. To continue, this is the reason why there are so many statues in the world, including in art museums, in libraries, and even on the campuses of colleges, to show forth the honor and respect people have towards them for making a difference in their lives. Still, even without proof, individuals worldwide hold true to their faith each day. After studying faith and religion in texts written by scholars with varying backgrounds, it is easy to see faith is something which is widely disputed. Comparison of Sigmund Freud s The Future of an Illusion and Paul Tillich s Dynamics of Faith, fully displays the discrepancies in points of view on the function of faith, as well as the necessity of faith, in society; while the comparison of Viktor E. Throughout his book, Tillich references faith as an ultimate concern to emphasize the importance of faith in the personality of individuals. Furthermore, Tillich believes faith is a vital part of human nature and that even the rejection of faith is, in itself, an act of faith. This displays Tillich s understanding that faith will never disappear from society because it is a piece of the puzzle in what makes up humanity (Tillich). After summarizing both arguments, discernibly Sigmund Freud and Paul Tillich would hold opposing views on both the function of faith and the future of faith. The disagreement would begin with the function of religion in society, displayed when Tillich writes, The question raised by this book is whether such belief is based on insight or on misunderstanding, and the question is unambiguously that the rejection of faith is rooted in a complete misunderstanding of the nature of faith (146). Freud believes religion is man being immature, but Tillich feels differently. Tillich perceives the rejection of faith as the misunderstanding of the true nature of faith. If Tillich and Freud were to hold a debate, Tillich would most likely discuss how Freud misunderstands faith s nature. Freud, however, would respond with a discussion about how faith is man looking for security in the world. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Diversity is a big word in fashion right now, but it can be hard to tell how committed the industry is to make changes. When it comes to modeling, we ve seen increased representation of a variety of races and ethnicities, there s still a journey to achieving anything resembling an accurate reflection of the myriad people out there. Let s not forget that breaking into the modeling industry is hard no matter what. Do you know it s more challenging to do so as a person of color? Little has been said about the challenges black model s face once they make it past the casting stage. African American women face racial diversity because of the shade of their skin, the texture of their hair, or the sizes of their bodies. When a model of color get hits from all directions and arrives backstage for a fashion week presentation, to realize artists are unequipped to work with her hair texture and complexion. This experience serves to reinforce her otherness. I usually just bring my own foundation with me before a show and come with my hair already straighten. said model Brittany Manson. Deadly injection changes from state to state.Normally, the prisoner is strapped to a gurney or a fixed execution table, rather than an operating room table by leather or webbing straps over the body and legs. All the chemicals used in the USA are standard medical drugs. • 33. Analysis Of Julio Cortazar s Short Story Axolotl In Julio Cortazar s short story, Axolotl, the young man is searching for answers to his life. He finds these answers in the small, Mexican salamander trapped within its enclosure at the Jardin. The axolotl challenges the young man to see the simplicity behind the mysterious guise of the small amphibian. The young man s daily visits to the Jardin only make the appeal of the axolotls greater. In those visits he begins to see not only the creatures simplicity, but also their neotenous tendencies and connection to death; all of which contribute to his association and union with them. Simplicity is an integral part of the young man s union with the axolotl. But the simple creature the man comes to know and admire could not be without its neotenous characteristics. As the salamander grows it never reaches adulthood and seemingly never ages. In this feature of the axolotl, the young man comes to the realization that death is a part of life for all men. He is scared of facing aging and dying, unsure how to react or feel about the unknown, and wants to avoid the question that all men hate to face. Looking to the axolotl for answers, he gets a paradoxical result. The animal that never ages, the animal he transforms into to escape the question of death, is a representation of death. The axolotl is lonely, immobile, seemingly lacking life, inexpressive, and unable to communicate, all things we associate with death. Somethings cannot be understood until you have personally faced the trials yourself. No living man has experienced dying, but all have experienced death. Similarly, the young man cannot truly begin to know what it is like to be the caged axolotl until he has been there. All his insecurities as a human disappear and his life as a simple axolotl begins. At last the young man can feel what the axolotls feel. All human understanding vanishes like dust in the wind. He stands still like all axolotls do, a prisoner looking for a purpose. The young man can see now that the axolotls have devoured his humanity. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. The Latin Of Latin Language The written Latin language changed minimally from the time it was used in Antiquity to the time it was used in the Medieval Era due to it not being spoken frequently in everyday situations. Instead of learning Latin by hearing others speak it, just as one learned Old English or French during this time, one needed to have a connection with the Church in order to be taught the language, or they needed to hear others speak it. The Latintaught by the Church was undeviating throughout Europe, and as a result all students learned the same Latin for centuries. However, common people who were uneducated still spoke the language as a second language during the early medieval era, and because of their lack of education in the language, the grammar became less steadfast and the spelling saw some changes. Although the written Latin languagedid not evolve as drastically as it had the potential to, it underwent certain grammatical changes that were set off by Jerome s use of altered grammar in the Latin Vulgate. Jerome borrowed constructions from the other languages the Bible had been written in and other authors used these alterations later. As a result, these altered constructions, which had gone unchanged for hundreds of years, were made permanent in time because the Vulgate was a broadly used resource for Latin. If it had not been for Jerome s initial changes in the grammar of the Latin in the Vulgate, then Latin would not have evolved and would have stayed even more similar to the ... • 39. The Vietnam War On The United States The Vietnam War is a more frequently and familiar name for the Second Indochina War. It was the longest war America has fought in. The Vietnam War had an impact on the American people, since it was the first war to ever be broadcasted on television. The country was able to see what was happening on the battleground. This war would have lasting effects on the United States and the nation it divided. The Vietnam war started way before America became involved (1955 1975). Indochina, which included Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, were all under French colonial rule. The Vietnam communist nationalist, Vietminh, fought for freedom from the French. The United States sent resources to France to help them defeat the communist risk. In 1961, when John F. Kennedy was inaugurated, the Vietnam war was not a substantial issue. However, Vice President Johnson was sent to Vietnam. Upon his return, he urged Kennedy to grab hold of the conflict. Kennedy decided to send special forces instead of sending combat troops. Kennedy s secret advisors reported to him that Aerial spraying of herbicides were used to starve the Vietcong of their food and jungle cover. The president was forced to send more troops. Age Specific Reproduction The effects of age specific breeding and matriarch presence on elephant reproduction Introduction Although Robinson et al. was not able to determine the overall the long term effects of early life reproduction, they provided results that show the immediate effects of age specific reproduction. The impact of reproduction on younger females is an important part of elephant survival, however, it is the impact of reproduction over time that provides understanding of the future of elephant populations. In order to show the later life effects of reproduction, Hayward et al. studied the survival of calves and annual breeding success of elephants throughout their lives and into their older age. Background Elephant populations in the wild are declining ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... produced a study that examined the later life consequences of breeding on a population, particularly breeding early in life. Hayward et al. also used the Myanmar timber camp Elephas maximus to perform the research, looking at the records of 416 reproductive captive born mothers and their offspring. The elephants used were from 8 regions of the Myanmar timber camps with the youngest breeding being 5 years of age and the oldest being 53. The mean age at the first birth of offspring was 19.48 years with the maximum number of lifetime calves being 10 calves. Hayward et al. discovered that individuals who didn t produce calves before the age of 19 had lower calf survival than those who produced one or more calves before the age of 19. Although beginning reproduction earlier in life is correlated with a shorter lifespan, the cost is outweighed with higher annual breeding success as well as increased calf survival (Hayward et al). The investment of energy and resources into breeding at an early age increases the chance of calf survival but also results in shorter lifespans compared to those who begin reproduction later in life (Hayward et al.). Based on the findings, the costs of early life reproduction are offset by higher lifetime breeding success in younger elephants. The breeding success of younger elephants can be attributed not only to early reproduction, but also to older females in a herd. While Hayward et al. observes the effects of young ...
