• YouTube has over a billion users–almost a third of all people on the
Internet–and every day, people watch hundreds of millions of hours
of YouTube videos and generate billions of views.
• YouTube overall reaches more 18-34 and 18-49 year-olds than any
cable network in the U.S
• The number of people watching YouTube each day has increased by
40% since March 2014.
Product
• 80% of YouTube's views are from outside of the
U.S.
• YouTube has launched local versions in more
than 70 countries.
• You can navigate YouTube in a total of 76
different languages (covering 95% of the Internet
population)
Why is YouTube important?
• YouTube allows people to express themselves and create an
identity. According to Mike Wesch, Youtube allows people to
create a strong voice and presence.
• 88% of the content on YouTube is original. The site is important
as it makes people creative- wanting to show themselves and their
ideas to the world. Within YouTube, internet crazes can develop
which can become a global phenomenon. An example of this is
the ‘Numa Numa’ song, which began as a music video in
Romania, however spread globally as people were replicating the
dance moves and lip syncing.
Mike Wesch’s Anthropological
Introduction to YouTube
• Anthropology is the study of people. In Wesch’s video, he states that 18-
24 year olds create the most content on YouTube. In relation to the
network ABC, he states that it took producers 60 years to programme
one million hours of content, however YouTube did it in six months.
Wesch talks about cultural inversion- the idea that people are
individuals, however they want to become part of an online community.
There is also elements of networked individualism- people coming
together through sharing content online, however at the same time being
alone. Although Wesch paints YouTube as an extremely positive
picture, however it can be argued that although people feel the need to
express themselves in a positive way, sometimes it can be used
negatively- to create hurtful or inappropriate videos.
YouTube Vloggers
• Louise Glitter (1,964,606 YouTube subscribers)
Louise Glitter
• Louise Glitter joined YouTube back in 2010 and
has been producing rather popular fashion, beauty
and advice videos ever since. The fashion/beauty
guru and online agony aunt also popped out a
darling daughter during her tenure, and the little
'un (nicknamed Baby Glitter) makes the occasional
appearance.
Mike Wesch’s Ideas Applied
• According to Wesch, he states that we want to express our
freedom and identity online, and that we grave
interaction. Louise Glitter expresses her identity and
freedom online for the benefit of others, giving out beauty
tips and advice. The technique of doing this via Vlogging
expands her audience, potentially reaching out to
millions. Louise Glitter also shows cultural inversion- the
idea of wanting to become part of an online community.
This is shown through her interaction with her fans- the
comments, etc.
Opposition to Mike Wesch’s
Perspective
• Andrew Keen
Andrew Keen’s Perspective
• Andrew Keen is critical of Web 2.0. He believes
that the original, user created content is taking
power away from professional, traditional and
media experts.
• He believes that this content is threatening
talented writers, musicians, etc as it is steering
away the focus to amateurs in the industry.
Cult of The Amateur
•Keen believes that amateur ‘pointless’ content is
filling up the internet, taking priority from
professionally created content.
•However a counter argument may be that although
it is not professional content, the element of
amateurism and realism provides entertainment for
viewers. Keen’s viewpoint on web 2.0 means
pushing out the amateurs to make space for the
professionals. However, this may reduce creativity
of regular people wanting to create content to be
shared online.

Momentum • YouTube has over a billion users–almost a third of all people on the Internet–and every day, people watch hundreds of millions of hours of YouTube videos and generate billions of views. • YouTube overall reaches more 18-34 and 18-49 year-olds than any cable network in the U.S • The number of people watching YouTube each day has increased by 40% since March 2014.
  • 4. Product • 80% of YouTube's views are from outside of the U.S. • YouTube has launched local versions in more than 70 countries. • You can navigate YouTube in a total of 76 different languages (covering 95% of the Internet population)

  • 6. Why is YouTube important? • YouTube allows people to express themselves and create an identity. According to Mike Wesch, Youtube allows people to create a strong voice and presence. • 88% of the content on YouTube is original. The site is important as it makes people creative- wanting to show themselves and their ideas to the world. Within YouTube, internet crazes can develop which can become a global phenomenon. An example of this is the ‘Numa Numa’ song, which began as a music video in Romania, however spread globally as people were replicating the dance moves and lip syncing.
  • 7. Mike Wesch’s Anthropological Introduction to YouTube • Anthropology is the study of people. In Wesch’s video, he states that 18- 24 year olds create the most content on YouTube. In relation to the network ABC, he states that it took producers 60 years to programme one million hours of content, however YouTube did it in six months. Wesch talks about cultural inversion- the idea that people are individuals, however they want to become part of an online community. There is also elements of networked individualism- people coming together through sharing content online, however at the same time being alone. Although Wesch paints YouTube as an extremely positive picture, however it can be argued that although people feel the need to express themselves in a positive way, sometimes it can be used negatively- to create hurtful or inappropriate videos.
  • 8. YouTube Vloggers • Louise Glitter (1,964,606 YouTube subscribers)
  • 9. Louise Glitter • Louise Glitter joined YouTube back in 2010 and has been producing rather popular fashion, beauty and advice videos ever since. The fashion/beauty guru and online agony aunt also popped out a darling daughter during her tenure, and the little 'un (nicknamed Baby Glitter) makes the occasional appearance.
  • 10. Mike Wesch’s Ideas Applied • According to Wesch, he states that we want to express our freedom and identity online, and that we grave interaction. Louise Glitter expresses her identity and freedom online for the benefit of others, giving out beauty tips and advice. The technique of doing this via Vlogging expands her audience, potentially reaching out to millions. Louise Glitter also shows cultural inversion- the idea of wanting to become part of an online community. This is shown through her interaction with her fans- the comments, etc.

  • 12. Andrew Keen’s Perspective • Andrew Keen is critical of Web 2.0. He believes that the original, user created content is taking power away from professional, traditional and media experts. • He believes that this content is threatening talented writers, musicians, etc as it is steering away the focus to amateurs in the industry.
  • 13. Cult of The Amateur •Keen believes that amateur ‘pointless’ content is filling up the internet, taking priority from professionally created content. •However a counter argument may be that although it is not professional content, the element of amateurism and realism provides entertainment for viewers. Keen’s viewpoint on web 2.0 means pushing out the amateurs to make space for the professionals. However, this may reduce creativity of regular people wanting to create content to be shared online.
