2. TRENDS
Twitter features a side bar that shows what the
most popular topics or tweet being shared by
everyone. This is possible by people using
The # symbol to connect posts to one topic.
Antony Giddens’ theory states that people
are self reflexive in making decisions on
who they want to be, and that identity is
changeable. In this instant, The trending
topics give you a decision on what you
want to see what is popular, possibly
changed your overall identity. It is also
proof that people’s identities are
changeable and will search what is most
popular in order to see what is considered
popular, potentially changing one’s self to
fit it.
3. NEWS FEED
Twitter is known for it being a source of
immediate information. This means
that most news is first put on Twitter
before anywhere else.
4. CELEBRITY UPDATES
People who you actively choose
to follow such as famous
people will share their life
and their work on Twitter
regular. This makes it easy
to find what their next big
thing is.
5. SHARING
Twitter is a good format for
sharing things of interest.
This allows for a great
deal of self expression
without that many people
being negative towards it
because twitter is for
sharing things.
These posts are an example of Erving
Goffman’s theory which suggests that
everyone puts on an act or personality
around other people which differs from
a person’s authentic personality. Here,
I have retweeted posts that are linked
to film and television, which creates
this front stage behaviour to the public.
This front stage behaviour suggests
that I am into fil/TV, as illustrated by the
reference to ‘Game of thrones’ and
‘Anchorman 2’. This is done to create a
specific personality that is constructed
from the connotations of these aspects.
It is also an example of Giddens’
theory, as I am seeing my self as a
project to build a biological coherent
narrative around. This is to suggest to
the public that I have a particular
interest in film and TV.
