upload and share videos.
• Founded on 14th February 2005, by Ched Hurley, Steve Chen, Jawed
Karim. launched on May 2005.
• Fastest growing website. 400 hours of video uploaded every
minute, Over 4 billion videos are viewed a day, Over 800 million
unique users visit YouTube each month.
Why YouTube?
• Freedom of Expression
People should be able to speak freely, share opinions, foster open dialogue, and
that creative freedom leads to new voices, formats and possibilities.
• Freedom of Information
Everyone should have easy, open access to information and that video is a
powerful force for education, building understanding, and documenting world
events, big and small.
• Freedom of Opportunity
Everyone should have a chance to be discovered, build a business and succeed on
their own terms, and that people—not gatekeepers—decide what’s popular.
• Freedom to Belong
Everyone should be able to find communities of support, break down barriers,
transcend borders and come together around shared interests and passions.
Video Technology
• Playback
YouTube primarily uses the VP9 and H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video formats, and
the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP protocol (allowed videos to be
viewed without requiring any plug-in).
• Uploading
YouTube accepts videos that are uploaded in most container formats,
including AVI, MP4, MPEG-PS, QuickTime File Format and FLV. It supports
WebM files and also 3GP, allowing videos to be uploaded from mobile
phones.
• Live Stream
Live streams can be up to 4K resolution at 60 fps, and also support 360°
video.
• 3D Videos
An HTML5 version of the YouTube player support side-by-side 3D footage
that is compatible with Nvidia 3D Vision.
• 360-degree Videos
In 2017, YouTube began to promote an alternative stereoscopic video
format known as VR180, which is limited to a 180-degree field of view,
but is promoted as being easier to produce than 360-degree video, and
allowing more depth to be maintained by not subjecting the video to
equirectangular projection.
