Case Study
History of YouTube
• The domain name “youtube.com” was activated on February 14th,
2005 by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim and it was
Karim’s idea for what would become of YouTube in the future
from “key events” – as stated on Business Insider.
• The “beta site” for YouTube wasn’t launched though until May in
the same year, that’s 3 months after getting the domain name
activated for them. The old design varies completely from what
we see today on YouTube.
• In 2006, YouTube was bought by Google whom had
seen potential in the video sharing site which was bought for
$1.65 billion in October. At the time of purchasing the website,
they called it “the next step in evolution of the Internet.”
• YouTube launched it’s “Partner Program” in 2007 which meant
that creators of videos who uploaded them would get money for
the content they would create.

How Other Artists Use YouTube
• Other artists use YouTube to promote their work –
through use of advertising before a video as they can
often put an advertisement for their own work in
front of another artists music videos that have a
similar genre to themselves. This can increase the size
of their audience and can influence others to listen to
their music.
• Artists also upload snippets of their work – like Taylor
Swift for example – onto YouTube and not the full
song, this is to avoid people downloading from
YouTube and making sure that the artist makes some
sort of money when it is bought from a store, online
or offline.
How I will Use YouTube
• I will be using YouTube in a similar way to most artists so that people can listen to the song as well
as view the music video. YouTube is a large site with a large amount of people going on it everyday –
either to listen to music or watch a video that they find funny and I hope people will come across the
video on this site.
• With this site, it’s easy for the video to become a recommended for others that listen to the same
genre of music due to it being something that could be something that they’d enjoy watching or
listening to.
