EUROPEAN VOLU NTARY SERVICE
The aim of European Voluntary Service in Erasmus+ is lo develop solidari§ and promote active citizenship of young people.
During their stay of up to 12 months in the receiving coun§, young people contribute to social cohesion and considerably
enhance their personal, professional and ìntercultural competences.
European Voluntary Service is normally canied out in partnerships between young volunteers, organisations in their counfy
of residence and organisations in a receiving country.
Erasmus+ is the Europ€an Union's programme for boosting skills and employabili§ through activities organised in the field
of education, iraining, youth, and sport. Youth activities under Erasmus+ aim to improve the key competences, skills and
employability of young people, promote foung people's active participation in the society, their social inclusion and well-being,
and foster improvements in youth work and youth policy at local, natiqnal and intemational level.

This document eertifies that Mariachiara Poggi spent her European Voluntary Service in the project Activating Youth V in
Faro, PoÉugal with the organisation ECOS - Cooperativa de Educacao, Cooperacao e Desenvolvimento, CRL.
The role and tasks of Mariachiara Poggi were:
Organization of events/workshops to promote environmenial awareness among the citizenships.
Organization of scientific fieldwork activities :monitoring ecological quality of surface waters (benthic
macroinvertebrates, microplastics, seagrass).
Creation of posters/ flyers/brochures/videos/guides to sponsor the activities of the project.
Content curation of the site and the facebook page of the project.
Archive digitization.

ECOS, CRL main goal of action is the promotion of non-formal education for social integration, aiming at contributing
for the development of a more human, sustainable, fair, inclusive, participative, democratic, equitable, cooperative,
dialogical, diverse and integrated society.
The main areas of intervention are based in the promotion of non-formal education, structured dialogue, cooperation
and collective construction among difierent actors and capacity building of organisations.
The sending organisation of Mariachiara Poggi was Associazione Porta Nuova Europa from Pavia (ltaly).

Key Competences for Lifèlong Leaming
COMMUNICATION IN MOTHER TONGUE
Being confronted with leaming and speaking a new language or more has been making me think about the use of my mother
tongue, of how important is the quality of communication and consequently of understanding.
The result is that when I can speak with family and friends from my home country I am pushed to use the most effective
expressions and accurate words; in the end is replying exactly the same mechanism while learning a new language, when you
try your best to use the conect expressions in order to be understood and to feel part of the guest country and doing it with
your own language makes you be more fluent both in writing and speaking.
I also improved my skills in translation; ln daily life when I have to translate from ltalian to English/Portuguese and vice versa
I am faster in finding the more suitable translation.
I am also doing a linguistic tandem with a Portuguese girl. Teaching my own language is making me to understand better the
rules of grammar and its tricks being faster in learning new languages.
COMMUNrcANON IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE§
Foi one year I have been using three difierent languages: ltalian, English and Portuguese.
Italian is the language I use every day to keep in touch with friends and family but it's English the one I use in daily life.
And it has been upgrading impressively; actually most of the time is also my 'intemal language" that is to say the language of
my thoughts. This fact makes me feel very proud of myself since at the beginning of my experience, at least as far as conceming
the speaking, lwas feeling completely uncomfortable, not being able to make a two minutès speech without hesitations.
Now I am even impressed by how fast I can translate from English to ltalian/Portuguese and vice versa.
Last but not least PoÉuguese is the language I use in my hosting organization. The language needed to express needs al
work, the one I use in all the things I have to do: from writing the newsletter of the site to speaking with the participants of
the activity I organize. lt's the link in between me and my hosting community. From the beginning until now every day is a
challenge and an opportunity to improve.
TIIATHEMATICAL COMPETENCE AND BASIC COMPETENCES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
As far as concerning mathematical competences I developed a mathematical mode of thought in order to solve the mosl
diverse problems during my project.

Just to make examples I developed a fast and strategic thinking in organizing events/aclivities, taking in con§ideration the
economic budget, the number of participants and of the partners involved, understanding how to count on them in terms of
economic aid made available, competences, motivation, willingness to collaboration in order to achieve the best result out of
all the variables involved.
Broadly speaking mathematical skill is also deal with a limited pocket money and take advantage of it in lerms of self-
satisfaction.
I acquired knowledge in the field of biology, in particular about biological indicators to monitoring the quality of waters, as well
as about the exotic species of fishes/ptants now eradicated in Portugal; about the importance of monitoring micro-plastics and
the role they play in the food chain. And also I learned more about the geology of Portugal, sharpening the knowledge also
in specialized training courses
DIGITAL COi'PETENCE
lworked forthe first time in the back-ofiice of an internet site, uploading and replacing material, updating the newsletter, making
changes in the principal menu etc.
I can now create and maintain a facebook page, getting to know better the dynamics of this social network (how to promote
the best in terms of choosing the most effective timing, catchy contents relating with the target users of the social network); I
can deal with the image part of a site/page with good competences in photo-editing.
I acquired confidence in communicating and exchanging information through e- mails
LEARNING TO LEARN
I understood which are the mechanism I use to leam, in a variety of contest, becoming aware of my own learning process and
hor to take the best out of my personal skills, out of my prior learning and life experiences.
I ended up understanding how fundamental is to do start doing things, to push yourself to try. The result was getting in touch
with capabilities I didn't know to have cause never putted into practice. At work this gained self-awareness led me to také
iniliatives, to be more independent and manage my tasks and time alone to understand how to combine my scientific and
technical knowledges with my personal abilities.
SOCIAL AND CIVIC COilIPETENCES
As, I dare say, an outsider in a new society, I had the opportunity to observe and understand the codes of conducts, both at
work and in situations of daily life ( supermarkets, banks, etc.) and interact with them, using and sharpening the skills of the
so called "emotional intelligence". I
I got also concerned with social and political questions, experiencing the delicate moment of political and presidential elections,
feeling involved.
The state of constant opènness that comes naturally while living in a different environment, that permit to put yourself in a
state of listening and understanding, is able to develop little by little the sense of belonging, to get you to think about yourself
as social animal, with civic rights and duties, so pushing you to be active part of the community and start feeling a citizen of
Europe, being concerned that some topics and questions are the cunent ones in all Europe.
I am now thinking about myself as a resource for my country I strongly want now to be an active part of the local society,
sharing my experience and the ideas/ attitudes/activities/ of the hosting country I think they will be a positive contribution to
my own country and local community.

SENSE OF INITIATIVE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
t created new partnerships for my hosting organization and I am glad they will be worth atso for the future for the activities and
events it is used to organize. ln the same way I developed my own project, participating in the organization of a film festival
about the pollution of the ocean (plastics, micro.plastics, etc.) and other issues (extraction of hydrocarbon, over- fishing' by
catching etc.) with a Portuguese N,G.O. To make all of this I relied on my creativity and entrepreneurship I was not aware to
have. ln particular I organized three days activities: two of them in both an elementary school and a high school' with projection
of shoÉ movies followed by a discussionfparliament" and creative workshops about recycling, video-making etc.; the last day
I organized an field- activity with collect of rubbish from the beach and sensitization about lhe role of micro-plastics-
Equally even ff in the opposite direction I learn when and how to say "no" ff I don't agree and I don'i feel confortable with a
work-situationl tasks trying also to deal with the problem experimenting others ways in which I would be helpful and lwould
feel accomplished wih.
ln general I understood how important is it to put ideas into practice, involving others and channeling only positive energy.
CULTURAL AWARENES§ AND EXPRESSION
Being c{osely with people from different nationalities in a country foreign to them all make ten times faster the process of
reflecting on the difierent cultural traditions, behaviors, in general and in specific contests, raising awareness and dealing with
difierences and similarities.
ln these months, speaking and sharing with people from all over Europe, as well as observing the different reality around mé, l
have been accumulating a lot of notions and ideas to trake back to my home country to enrich my own reality with these inputs
from outside and contribute to make something new for it: improve my country with ideas from others.
Speaking about me I started thinking about me a§ a citizen of Europe and at the same I feel more connected with my own culture;
I really feel motivated to be an active paÉ of society, considering now myself a "enrichment factor'' for it cause I experiruented
directly on myself the enrichment cnming from.sharing with other cultures'

EUROPEAN VOLU NTARY SERVICE The aim of European Voluntary Service in Erasmus+ is lo develop solidari§ and promote active citizenship of young people. During their stay of up to 12 months in the receiving coun§, young people contribute to social cohesion and considerably enhance their personal, professional and ìntercultural competences. European Voluntary Service is normally canied out in partnerships between young volunteers, organisations in their counfy of residence and organisations in a receiving country. Erasmus+ is the Europ€an Union's programme for boosting skills and employabili§ through activities organised in the field of education, iraining, youth, and sport. Portugal The following summary of Mariachiara Poggi's leamin! outcome is the result Mariachiara Poggi and her mentor Sara Ramos during the whole activity. The following description of learning outcomes is a reflection related to the recommended by the European Padiament and the Council in December 2006. of an ongoing dialogue process between Key Competences for Lifèlong Leaming COMMUNICATION IN MOTHER TONGUE Being confronted with leaming and speaking a new language or more has been making me think about the use of my mother tongue, of how important is the quality of communication and consequently of understanding. The result is that when I can speak with family and friends from my home country I am pushed to use the most effective expressions and accurate words; in the end is replying exactly the same mechanism while learning a new language, when you try your best to use the conect expressions in order to be understood and to feel part of the guest country and doing it with your own language makes you be more fluent both in writing and speaking. I also improved my skills in translation; ln daily life when I have to translate from ltalian to English/Portuguese and vice versa I am faster in finding the more suitable translation. I am also doing a linguistic tandem with a Portuguese girl. Teaching my own language is making me to understand better the rules of grammar and its tricks being faster in learning new languages. COMMUNrcANON IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE§ Foi one year I have been using three difierent languages: ltalian, English and Portuguese. Italian is the language I use every day to keep in touch with friends and family but it's English the one I use in daily life. And it has been upgrading impressively; actually most of the time is also my 'intemal language" that is to say the language of my thoughts. This fact makes me feel very proud of myself since at the beginning of my experience, at least as far as conceming the speaking, lwas feeling completely uncomfortable, not being able to make a two minutès speech without hesitations. Now I am even impressed by how fast I can translate from English to ltalian/Portuguese and vice versa. Last but not least PoÉuguese is the language I use in my hosting organization. The language needed to express needs al work, the one I use in all the things I have to do: from writing the newsletter of the site to speaking with the participants of the activity I organize. lt's the link in between me and my hosting community. From the beginning until now every day is a challenge and an opportunity to improve. TIIATHEMATICAL COMPETENCE AND BASIC COMPETENCES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY As far as concerning mathematical competences I developed a mathematical mode of thought in order to solve the mosl diverse problems during my project.
  • 4. r Erasmus+ Just to make examples I developed a fast and strategic thinking in organizing events/aclivities, taking in con§ideration the economic budget, the number of participants and of the partners involved, understanding how to count on them in terms of economic aid made available, competences, motivation, willingness to collaboration in order to achieve the best result out of all the variables involved. Broadly speaking mathematical skill is also deal with a limited pocket money and take advantage of it in lerms of self- satisfaction. I acquired knowledge in the field of biology, in particular about biological indicators to monitoring the quality of waters, as well as about the exotic species of fishes/ptants now eradicated in Portugal; about the importance of monitoring micro-plastics and the role they play in the food chain. And also I learned more about the geology of Portugal, sharpening the knowledge also in specialized training courses DIGITAL COi'PETENCE lworked forthe first time in the back-ofiice of an internet site, uploading and replacing material, updating the newsletter, making changes in the principal menu etc. I can now create and maintain a facebook page, getting to know better the dynamics of this social network (how to promote the best in terms of choosing the most effective timing, catchy contents relating with the target users of the social network); I can deal with the image part of a site/page with good competences in photo-editing. I acquired confidence in communicating and exchanging information through e- mails LEARNING TO LEARN I understood which are the mechanism I use to leam, in a variety of contest, becoming aware of my own learning process and hor to take the best out of my personal skills, out of my prior learning and life experiences. I ended up understanding how fundamental is to do start doing things, to push yourself to try. The result was getting in touch with capabilities I didn't know to have cause never putted into practice. At work this gained self-awareness led me to také iniliatives, to be more independent and manage my tasks and time alone to understand how to combine my scientific and technical knowledges with my personal abilities. SOCIAL AND CIVIC COilIPETENCES As, I dare say, an outsider in a new society, I had the opportunity to observe and understand the codes of conducts, both at work and in situations of daily life ( supermarkets, banks, etc.) and interact with them, using and sharpening the skills of the so called "emotional intelligence". I I got also concerned with social and political questions, experiencing the delicate moment of political and presidential elections, feeling involved. The state of constant opènness that comes naturally while living in a different environment, that permit to put yourself in a state of listening and understanding, is able to develop little by little the sense of belonging, to get you to think about yourself as social animal, with civic rights and duties, so pushing you to be active part of the community and start feeling a citizen of Europe, being concerned that some topics and questions are the cunent ones in all Europe. I am now thinking about myself as a resource for my country I strongly want now to be an active part of the local society, sharing my experience and the ideas/ attitudes/activities/ of the hosting country I think they will be a positive contribution to my own country and local community.
  • 5. ,f Erasmus+ lwould like also to develop a common project in between them. between my sending organization and my hosting organization, to be a link SENSE OF INITIATIVE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP t created new partnerships for my hosting organization and I am glad they will be worth atso for the future for the activities and events it is used to organize. ln the same way I developed my own project, participating in the organization of a film festival about the pollution of the ocean (plastics, micro.plastics, etc.) and other issues (extraction of hydrocarbon, over- fishing' by catching etc.) with a Portuguese N,G.O. To make all of this I relied on my creativity and entrepreneurship I was not aware to have. ln particular I organized three days activities: two of them in both an elementary school and a high school' with projection of shoÉ movies followed by a discussionfparliament" and creative workshops about recycling, video-making etc.; the last day I organized an field- activity with collect of rubbish from the beach and sensitization about lhe role of micro-plastics- Equally even ff in the opposite direction I learn when and how to say "no" ff I don't agree and I don'i feel confortable with a work-situationl tasks trying also to deal with the problem experimenting others ways in which I would be helpful and lwould feel accomplished wih. ln general I understood how important is it to put ideas into practice, involving others and channeling only positive energy. CULTURAL AWARENES§ AND EXPRESSION Being c{osely with people from different nationalities in a country foreign to them all make ten times faster the process of reflecting on the difierent cultural traditions, behaviors, in general and in specific contests, raising awareness and dealing with difierences and similarities. ln these months, speaking and sharing with people from all over Europe, as well as observing the different reality around mé, l have been accumulating a lot of notions and ideas to trake back to my home country to enrich my own reality with these inputs from outside and contribute to make something new for it: improve my country with ideas from others. Speaking about me I started thinking about me a§ a citizen of Europe and at the same I feel more connected with my own culture; I really feel motivated to be an active paÉ of society, considering now myself a "enrichment factor'' for it cause I experiruented directly on myself the enrichment cnming from.sharing with other cultures' OTHER SPEGIFIC SKILLS WORK:Positive can-do attitude; personal inclination to team-work' SOCIAL: empathy, collaboration and cooperation, building bonds, developing others, leveraging diversity.
