3. INDIVIDUAL LEARNING OUTCOMES
- 3 -
Marta Bilska participated in the European Voluntary Service project European Friends for Green Trends in Opatija,
Croatia between 03/02/2015 and 02/02/2016.
The following summary of Marta Bilska's learning outcome is the result of an ongoing dialogue process between Marta
Bilska and her mentor Tanja Mamula during the whole activity.
The following description of learning outcomes is a reflection related to the Key Competences for Lifelong Learning
recommended by the European Parliament and the Council in December 2006.
COMMUNICATION IN MOTHER TONGUE
During my volunteering service, I was writing monthly reports in Polish to my sending organisation in order to reflect on what I
had learnt and done, which allowed me to express my thoughts, feelings and opinions in my mother tongue.
Through everyday contact with foreign languages I could observe the difference between Polish and other languages as well
as teach other people (volunteers, local community) basic expressions in Polish.
COMMUNICATION IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES
I improved my Croatian language skills through everyday communication with local people, managing Facebook pages of my
organisation in Croatian, writing articles in Croatian for the website of the organisation and daily communication at work with
other colleagues. Moreover, through various events I had contact with local people of various ages and backgrounds where I
learned about different usage of Croatian language and its dialects and accents.
Living with the other volunteer helped me to improve my English language skills as I had to express my thoughts and feelings
on daily basis in English. Also, I could notice differences in accents while communicating with other volunteers that come from
various European countries for whom English was not the mother tongue.
At work our team meetings were in English which allowed me to improve expressing opinions, ideas and thoughts in English.
Living and working with a Spanish volunteer gave me a chance to get to know Spanish culture, as well as to learn basic
expressions in Spanish.
MATHEMATICAL COMPETENCE AND BASIC COMPETENCES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
During my EVS, I wrote one project application for the training course, where I had to do cost calculation and use logical
thinking for the best usage of the available resources.
While preparing various promotional materials I learned more about the photo resolutions, changing the sizes of photos
depending on their purpose.
4. INDIVIDUAL LEARNING OUTCOMES
- 4 -
I also expanded my knowledge about nature, ecology, sustainable development and I improved the ability to explain these
concepts to others thanks to being present at educative sessions held by Zmergo team members, workshops in school and
reading articles on these topics.
DIGITAL COMPETENCE
In my everyday work I used Microsoft and Open Office, especially Word and Excel. I also learned more about using Google
documents and how to create google forms.
One of my responsibilities during EVS was to manage Facebook pages of my organisation - Zmergo and Zelena cistka, which
helped me to improve my knowledge about the use of social networks creating attractive online content as well as how to use
those resources for promotion.
As a part of my job, I managed the website of my organisation in Wordpress. I was making posts, adding events to calendar
and I worked on its appearance. Additionally, during the whole period of EVS, I was writing my own blog in Wordpress, which
I created and managed myself.
LEARNING TO LEARN
Through weekly meetings with my supervisor and the rest of the team members, I had an opportunity to reflect on my learning
process, how I learn the best and I was able to evaluate whether I reached my personal learning goals. Because of the dynamic
of work I learned how to plan my time efficiently and manage my tasks.
SOCIAL AND CIVIC COMPETENCES
Living in new society allowed me to make friends with people from different countries and backgrounds. Through getting to
know local people and their customs I could also observe differences in societies.
During my EVS I was extensively working in teams, which taught me how to function in a team and how to resolve conflicts when
they arise. By being an active member of Žmergo's core team, I had the opportunity to learn about NGO-work, management,
and decision-making process as well as experience how the civil sector can contribute to positive changes in society.
SENSE OF INITIATIVE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
While organising different sorts of events like celebration of ecological dates, eco fairs and workshops in school, I developed
the sense of entrepreneurship by putting my ideas into practice and being creative.
I implemented two personal projects with the other volunteer - the two week programme of Spanish classes for children during
the summer activities in children’s association Naša Djeca in Opatija and organisation of photo/video exhibition in Rijeka. All
phases of the projects were our initiative and responsibility therefore I learned how to plan and manage my time and tasks.

CULTURAL AWARENESS AND EXPRESSION
By living and working with people from different cultures, I developed my intercultural sensitivity, flexibility and understanding
of difference. Sharing flat with the volunteer from Spain, gave me opportunity to learn a lot about Spanish culture and customs.
Living in Croatia for 12 months helped me to get to know very well their customs and traditions by participating in some events
and festivals.
I could also share with the others my culture and traditions through preparing traditional meals and talking about the customs,
which allowed me to reflect on my cultural background and see the differences as well as similarities in our cultures.
Through EVS, I used various kinds of materials in order to prepare games for children or promotional materials. I also increased
the awareness of my own culture. As a part of our promotional tasks, we the volunteers, produced photos, video materials,
posters, etc. and in this way they we learned to appreciate the importance of creative expression of ideas in a range of media.
We confirm the mutual process of reflection during European Voluntary Service.
