Prototypes
Brief: Design a promotional booklet/leaflet for Transport for
London, encouraging people to visit Greenwich and the
tourist attractions.

2. Research:I have researched into existing leaflets/booklets in the real world, for example Bupa, and South West Trains. These leaflets
were all dull and not inventive at all, I thought I would be able to get more positive influence from more aesthetically
pleasing leaflets like the V&A Paul Smith one below. I also looked into Transport for London (client) and their existing
advertising as this gave me an idea of what they have done before and what I could do to improve their designs.

3. Influences:
I have been influenced by Gerard Richter and David
Thorpe during the course of my project. With a
career spanning nearly six decades, Gerhard Richter
is widely considered one of the greatest artists of our
time. Gerhard Richter is known for a prolific and
stylistically varied exploration of the medium of
painting, often incorporating and exploring the visual
effects of photography. David Thorpe’s work is
concerned with the relationship between objects
and their makers, with a particular interest in the
role of craft in handmade design and art. He uses
paper collage to create his works which I have tried
to replicate.

4. Prototype 1 This is my first Prototype
idea, I have combined
painting and collage
which I have previously
experimented with in
my sketchbook. In this
prototype, I have just
used random building
shapes, however I would
want it to use the
Greenwich Skyline
including Canary Wharf,
O2 Arena and the Royal
Naval College as it would
be more suited to the
topic. The contrast of
the painting and the
collage provides two
different textures to
explore. To develop this
design further I would
have to experiment in
using text and making
the front look more
aesthetically pleasing,
this could be for
example cutting
windows out of the
buildings.

5. Prototype 2
This is my second prototype where I have used the shapes of the buildings at the Royal
Naval College, in particular the dome. The idea of this leaflet is the fact that there are
holes and flaps within the leaflet which interact with the target audience – tourists. When
you lift the flap on the front cover, a whole image of the dome is revealed. The leaflet is
double sided which would provide me with lots of space to experiment with, creating a
leaflet for tourists which is aesthetic and informative. If I were to develop this idea
further, I would experiment with painting the building as well as trialling with text.

6. Prototype 3
This is my third Prototype in which I have combined
painting and the shapes of buildings in Greenwich. For
example, I have used my painting of the O2 in my
sketchbook and inserted it into the shape of the O2 Arena
which I have painted on to my Prototype. Below, I have
cut out the different interesting architecture from my
sketchbook including my painting of Canary Wharf, The
Royal Naval College, my collage of Canary Wharf and the
drawing I completed of the Royal Observatory. I have
layered these images to create a skyline of Greenwich.
This is where my idea of layering the buildings in a leaflet.
To develop this design further, I could experiment with
text and find a position where it looks effective, however
where it doesn’t ruin the layout of the leaflet.
