2. What was their breakthrough?
- He is still a new upcoming video director
- Recently; due to filming Mura Musa’s music videos countless times, has
allowed his work to be seen and other artists to see it
- His first Mura Musa’s video was ‘What if I go?’; this was most likely his
breakthrough as it the start of him and Mura Musa’s relationship, which has
lead to Yoni creating all Mura Musa’s other videos
3. Look at their body of work – do they have a
specific style? If so what is it?
-Yoni Lappin mainly focus’ on representing the youth culture
-He shoots in a vintage style; he always seems to use a vintage cameras or
puts on a vintage effect so that the video looks more vintage; which is very
in at the moment, especially for the youth culture
-He enjoys shooting and capturing the essence of what it is to be young and
carefree in urban London
-Enjoys exploring sexuality and the bonds between couples whether they're
straight or gay
-He uses a large range of ethnic groups, to represent the idea that there isn't a
cultural or ethnic barrier anymore; we are all equal
4. What have been their successes/failures?
-Still a very new and upcoming director, so hasn’t made enough videos
to clearly made any serious successes and failures
-He is self taught, making it clear that failures as well as possible
success’ to be almost inevitable
-His videos so far have all been rather successful; with the help of the
big named artists he has made his first few videos – really helped Yoni
Lappin’s name get into the light and building his personal sucsess
5. Do they have a specific actor/s they work with
-He finds a large majority of his actors and actresses on social
media; so they aren't often big names
-Very ethically mixed group of young people throughout his
videos
-All fall into the age category of around 17-21
-Artist wise he has don’t a sequence of around 3 or 4 of Mura
Musas music videos
-Mura Musas songs have featured artists such as A$AP, Designer,
Charlie XCX, so has also worked along side them
6. Focus film/video – this forms the central
area of research
-One night by Mura Musa ft Charlie
XCX
-Uses a lot of steady shots to show
the different young individuals, and
cultural
differences
-Montaged with Charlie XCX lip
syncing in locations such as a school
gym; which is something he hasn’t
done in any of his other music videos
-This clearly inspired his other videos
as from then on he now focuses more
on the artists
and showing them lip syncing to their
own songs
7. What is it about their directing style that you
like? Would they inspire you in your own work?
-I'm inspired by the locations he chooses; often dark, grungy like locations,
where it is clear students who live in London would go and stay
-The ways he plays a lot with lighting using colorful lights; this has got me
inspired to look at how colored lighting can affect the moods of the audience
and the scene shown
-He casts lots of different types of people and unique individuals which really
adds to the ethic diversity of the videos
