Mark Ronson: Uptown funk –
f.t Bruno Mars
• Uptown funk is a funk song which is by Mark Ronson, ft. Bruno Mars.
The idea of funk songs is to make the audience, dance along to the
song. Uptown funk features a dance sequence to the music video
and a montage of clips. The target audience of uptown funk is the
late 20’s- early 40’s, however this song does attract some of the
young. Codes and conventions of the funk genre is using unusual
locations for dancing, may have a narrative and might not feature
the singer/ group in the music video.
• I would say that those that listen to uptown funk would be around
the C2-B of the socio- economic grouping. These are people who are
skilled manual, junior managerial and managerial. In the
psychographic groups, I think those that would listen to this music
video is a succeeder and explorer. Those that are a succeeder and
explorer are confident and have a lot of energy.

• The storyline of the song is a group of dancers, dancing down
the street. There is a montage of clips in the music video, e.g. ,
the lead character in the hairdressers and having his shoes
cleaned. In the music video, when transitioning from one
scene to another, this seems to have been done through using
cuts. The lighting of the music video throughout seems to be
bright, the location of the scene is outside so additional
lighting wouldn’t be used because of the natural light. A music
video will only feature non-diegetic sound which is the song of
the music. A variety of camera shots were used in the music
video, the producer likes to use mid shots to showcase the
dancers, dancing along to the music. Pans are repeatedly used
to show the dancers dancing and close ups of the main dancer.

• For the final production, I am intending on making a music
video to a funk genre song. The main aim of a funk song is to
make the audience dance, we will need to make sure that the
music video we are producing won’t defeat this genre aim.
This music video has inspired me to include a dancing
sequence to our music production.
Beat it by Michael Jackson.
• Beat It, is a song by Michael Jackson and is a pop/ funk song, first
release in 1982. The target audience for this song would be anyone that
likes pop songs. Michael Jackson’s songs are full of energy and follows
the conventions of funk, which is dancing along to the song. The lighting
for the scenes are dark, and additional light is coming from light sources
such as bedside lamps.
