- Yellow rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia striiformis, is a major threat to global wheat production, especially in Central and West Asia and North Africa (CWANA). It can cause yield losses up to 80% in susceptible wheat varieties.
- Recent yellow rust epidemics in countries like Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Morocco have resulted in estimated monetary losses of hundreds of millions of dollars.
- Breeding and utilizing yellow rust resistant varieties with genes like Yr5 and Yr15 is important for control, but many countries still rely on fungicide applications during epidemics. Increased variety testing, pathology research, and race monitoring are also needed for effective yellow rust management.
