The Year 7 English curriculum covers a range of topics throughout the year including modern novels, poetry from around the world, Shakespeare, Gothic fiction, and Greek myths. In the autumn term, students will read Trash by Andy Mulligan. In the spring term, they will study poems celebrating cultural identity and Shakespeare's dramatic devices using A Midsummer Night's Dream. The summer term covers Gothic literature and Greek myths. Students are encouraged to read fiction and non-fiction daily, complete Accelerated Reader quizzes, write creatively, and attend English clubs to improve literacy skills. Parents can support their child by reading together, helping with spelling and grammar, and visiting libraries and theaters.

Modern Novel
Trash by Andy Mulligan
This unit will take students on a journey of discovery as they read a Modern
Novel.
Spring Term 2a
Poetry To Celebrate Cultural
Identity
This unit will explore poems from around the world and teach students how to
analyse and write an essay on an unseen Poem.
Spring Term 2b
Performing Shakespeare This unit will explore Shakespeare’s dramatic devices and performance
methods using key extracts from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The overall aim
of this unit is to develop pupil confidence in their speaking and listening skills
by using Shakespeare as a starting point for analysis and development of
expression and delivery of skills.
Summer Term 3a
Gothic Fiction This unit will explore the conventions of Gothic Literature, the students will
study a wide range of Gothic extracts with a focus on theme, setting and the
writer’s language techniques.
Summer Term 3b
Greek Myths This unit will explore myths and teach students how to read, write and
understand myths.

3. WHAT CAN STUDENTS DO?
Read a wide range of Fiction and Non-Fiction
texts for 20 minutes every night.
Complete Accelerated Reader Quizzes in the
Library, preferably a couple of days after finishing
a text.
 Write creatively: short stories, poems, descriptive
writing, diary entries etc.
 Correct Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
mistakes.
Attend an English club:
Rising Stars - aimed at students in the mixed ability
sets, to help them improve their literacy skills
Shooting Stars - aimed at students in the top sets, to
stretch and challenge them.

4. HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD?
Reading with your child and encouraging them to research
vocabulary that they are unfamiliar with.
Support your child in correcting SPAG mistakes.
Completing spelling tests with your child at home.
Taking you child to the theatre, Local and National
Libraries.
