• Brake Debris and Tyre Particles: These particles raise soil toxicity, cause air
pollution (particulate matter) and cause lung damage.
• Painting and Coating: Highest contribution (62%) to the total environmental
impact during automobile manufacture. Lead to discharge of nickel, copper and
chromium into the atmosphere.
• Material of construction: Different materials such as steel, composite and light
metals have different environmental impacts and these impacts must be accounted
for while consider their functional benefits and vehicle’s functional lifespan.
•Recyclability and Polymeric Content: Although light weight carbon fibres reduce
vehicle weight, they are hard to recycle and are often incinerated in the EOL stage.
Thus, there is a trade off between light weight and recyclability.
•Batteries: Typically 93% of lead acid battery content is recycled but the remaining
7% still accounts for 42000 tons of toxic materials. Also, very few recyclers know
how to handle toxic material.
•Auto Shredder Residue: ASR is contaminated with lead, mercury, chromium etc.
Burning of ASR as a feedstock in kilns causes air pollution.

agricultural practices among farmers in order to increase crop yields and income
levels.
• Incorporate light weight materials and friction reduction features in their

CNG variants of their cars.
• They make a business case out of sustainability initiatives and nudge all
stakeholders (employees, suppliers, community etc) to adopt sustainable

•For new product development Ford Motors follows a global system called Global
Product Development System or GPDS which provides a common set of
milestones and metrics for development across all vehicle programs.
• GPDS contains a wide variety of environmental performance criteria such as fuel
economy, recycled material content and substances of concern.
•A group of global leaders has been identified to coordinate global sustainable
product attributes and to implement corporate sustainability.
•They use “design for sustainability” or DfS approach to maximize the
environmental, social and economic performance of the vehicles. A product
sustainability index is used to integrate the Dfs principle.
• All manufacturing facilities follow the Ford Production System which uses
techniques to reduce wastage and defects. All facilities are ISO 14001 certified
meaning they comply with global environmental norms.

vehicles.
• Development of alternate fuel technologies such as CNG, Dimethyl ether engine
and hybrid vehicles.

procurement guidelines and promoting sustainable practices among suppliers.
• Organize a group wide energy saving 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) awards
ceremony each year and the winner is selected from numerous ISUZU
manufacturing facilities.
