America joined allies in 1817 against unknown opponents. Large trenches were dug for soldiers to hide in for protection during trench warfare between two sides, with no man's land in between containing barbed wire and mines. The trenches protected soldiers from artillery but were always wet or frozen with rats and flies, and dead bodies sometimes remained inside.
