2. • The WTO agreements cover goods, services and intellectual property. They spell out the
principles of liberalization, and the permitted exceptions.
• The WTO oversees about 60 different agreements which have the status of international legal
texts. Member countries must sign and ratify all WTO agreements on accession
• The Agreement on Agriculture came into effect with the establishment of the WTO at the
beginning of 1995.

4. GENERAL AGREEMENT ON TARIFFS AND TRADE
(GATT)
• It was signed by its 23 founding members on 30th October 1947. at present it regulates trade
between more than 150 countries.
• According to its preamble, the purpose of GATT is “substantial reduction of tariffs and other
trade barriers and the elimination of preferences, on a reciprocal and mutually advantageous
basis.”

• The General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) is a treaty of the World Trade
Organization (WTO) that entered into force in January 1995 as a result of the Uruguay
Round negotiations.

7. TRADE RELATED INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
RIGHTS (TRIPS)
• The TRIPS Agreement, came into effect on 1 January 1995, and to date, it is the most comprehensive
multilateral agreement on intellectual property.
• It sets down minimum standards for the regulation by national governments of many forms of intellectual
property (IP) as applied to nationals of other WTO member nations
