A pattern language for microservices (#SFMicroservices)Chris Richardson
When architecting an application, you need to choose between the traditional monolithic architecture, or the more fashionable microservices architecture consisting of many smaller services. But rather than blindly picking the familiar or the fashionable, it’s important to remember what Fred Books said almost 30 years ago: there are no silver bullets in software. Every architectural decision has both benefits and drawbacks. Whether the benefits of one approach outweigh the drawbacks greatly depends upon the context of your particular project. Moreover, even if you adopt the microservices architecture, you must still make numerous other design decisions, each with their own trade-offs.
A software pattern is an ideal way of describing a solution to a problem in a given context along with its tradeoffs. In this presentation, we describe a pattern language for microservices. You will learn about patterns that will help you decide when and how to use microservices vs. a monolithic architecture. We will also describe patterns that solve various problems in a microservice architecture including inter-service communication, service registration and service discovery.

Abstract: Practicing engineers often face two obstacles during the course of a design project. One is the limited access to relevant knowledge and another is the limited access to convenient computing tools. Several tasks are involved when a project is launched, in terms of computing workflow, research work, and discussion among colleagues. These tasks are repeated over and over again until a final design is arrived. If the tasks are not well facilitated, several bottlenecks will occur and an engineering firm may lose its competitiveness in the industry. Weblog, Digital Library, and Semantic Web Services possess the potential to improve the productivity of the engineers in dealing with the computational and knowledge management workflows. Weblog and Digital Library, modern information technologies deployable on the Internet or an intranet, can be combined into a modern form of knowledge management (KM) system which more naturally and collaboratively facilitates individuals in sharing tacit and explicit knowledge, as well as computing tools. Semantic Web Services, the joint application of the Internet-based Web Services and the Semantic Web technologies, can be applied to help unify and utilize the scattered computing resources, which include design tools, computers, databases, and knowledge bases, to enable numerical analysis to be performed in a fast, accurate, and automated manner. This paper presents a framework for the application of Weblog, Digital Library, and Semantic Web Services to improve the productivity of the engineers. A social-Web system prototype, developed to assist users in building up the personal portfolios of knowledge and computing tools which can be shared with their peers to form a larger organizational KM system, is presented to illustrate the framework.

An IoT platform is a fusion of physical resources such as connectors, wireless networks, smart phones and computer technologies viz; protocols, web service technologies, etc. the heterogeneity of used technologies generates a high cost at interoperability level. This paper presents a generic meta-model of IoT interoperability based on different organizational concepts such as service, compilation, activity and architectures. This model called M2IOTI, defines a very simple description of the IoT interoperability. M2IOTI is a meta-model of IoT interoperability by which one can build a model of IoT interoperability with different forms of organizations. We show that this meta-model allows for connected objects heterogeneity in semantic technologies, activities, services and architectures, in order to offer a high level at IoT interoperability. We also introduce the concept PSM which uses the same conceptual model to describe each interoperability model already existed. Such as conceptual, behavioral, semantic and dynamic models. We have also proposed a PIM model that regroups all the common concepts between the PSMs interoperability models.

In the current complex and competitive environment one has to have both technical and soft skills. ITMR strongly believes that training people in soft skills is vital for organizational and individual success. To sustain one’s career, get the right recognitions, promotions and opportunities, one has to have the required soft skills by cultivating these and adding value to oneself as a technical expert.

Code Freeze 2018: There is no such thing as a microservice!Chris Richardson
This is a talk I gave at Code Freeze 2018:
The microservice architecture is becoming increasingly popular. However, frequent references to using “a microservice to solve a problem” suggest that the concept is not universally well understood. In this talk, I define the microservice architecture as an architectural style and explain what that actually means. I also describe how the primary goal of the microservice architecture is to enable continuous delivery and deployment, and how it achieves that. You will learn why the architecture that you pick for your application matters. And you will learn how to solve key challenges with decomposing an application into microservices. This talk explains why there is no such thing as a microservice!

There is a growing trend of organisations moving to ‘the cloud’ to meet their intranet. While many organisations are running their Intranets ‘on the premises’, many are considering entirely cloud-based solutions such as Office 365. The question for many companies is: ‘should our intranet be built with Office 365?’.
In this session, Richard will explore:
The benefits Office 365 brings to an intranet
Where the issues and challenges will lie
When and how you may integrate Office 365 with your existing intranet today.

The Computer Shop System is designed & developed for a computer shop to manage their records of selling and purchasing of the computer parts from the dealers and sell them to the customers. This system makes the work of the computer shopkeepers easy as it keeps all the records of the computer product and also keep the records of the product that is sold to the customers.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
