How do you get a lesson to stick?
I recently read Made to Stick by Chip Heath and Dan Heath. It was the last in the perfect trilogy of books I read this summer which also included The World Is Flat and A Whole New Mind. It is a book on why some ideas die, and others thrive. They explain how to make an idea “stick.” I wrote many notes as I read the book changing the context of their writing to be more in line with helping me plan a lesson rather than a marketing campaign. All of the ideas in the podcast and PowerPoint are from the book. I decided to type them onto a file so that I would not misplace them and that turned into a PowerPoint document. I am going to post the PowerPoint with music on teachertube.com under the title “How do you get a lesson to stick?” While I don’t consider it done, I know with school starting it is probably as finished as it ever will be and decided to post it as is. Hope it helps make your lessons “stick” this year.

A young teacher tried her hand at developing her first differentiated lesson
plan. “Could you give it a look and see if I’m on the right track?” she asked me.
Her 4th graders were all reading the same novel. She had fashioned five
tasks, and her plan was to assign each student one of the tasks, based on what
she perceived to be their readiness levels. She showed me the task options:
1. Create a new jacket for the book.
2. Build a set for a scene in the book.
3. Draw one of the characters.
4. Rewrite the novel’s ending.
5. Develop a conversation between a character in this novel and one
from another novel they’d read in class that year.

After I looked at the tasks, I asked a question that I wish someone had
insisted I answer daily in the first decade of my teaching: “What do you want
each student to come away with as a result of this activity?”
She squinted and paused. “I don’t understand,” she answered.
I tried again: “What common insight or understanding should all kids
get because they successfully complete their assigned task?”
She shook her head. “I still don’t get it.”
“OK, let me ask another way.” I paused. “Do you want each child to
know that an author actually builds a character? Do you want them all to
understand why the author took the time to write the book? Do you want
them to think about how the main character’s life is like their own? Just what
is it that the activities should help the students to make sense of?”
Her face flushed. “Oh my gosh!” she exclaimed. “I don’t know. I thought
all they were supposed to do was read the story and do something with it!”
“Hazy” Lessons
Many of us could have been this novice. We entered the profession with a
vague sense that students should read, listen to, or watch something. Then
they should do “some sort of activity” based on it. Consider the following
examples:
• A 1st grade teacher reads her students a story. Then she asks them
to draw a picture of what they heard. But what should the picture portray?
The story’s beginning and end? How the main character looked when she
was frightened by the stranger? The big tree in the barnyard ...

Education has played a significant role in every era. It can guarantee success in one’s life but
when people are forced to learn something, it will not benefit them and their creativity will be
stigmatized due to the lack of interest. The purpose of education is not to force students to learn
specific subjects but to help them find their passion by encouraging them to be creative at their strong
intelligences.
Students do not have a chance to extend their creativity because the way of teaching is based
on memorizing. Most teachers stuff information to students’ heads, so students do not even get a
chance to choose what they want to learn. If students can not choose what they want to learn, they
would not be interested in what they are forced to learn and that may affect their ambition in the future.
In “Reinventing education to teach creativity and entrepreneurship” ,Jennifer Medbery says
gradebooks and multiplechoice are not the best way to grade students and realize their improvement so
teaching needs a good classroom relationship management. I think the best way to grade students is
through projects. Instead of the final exam students can come up with a project about the most
interesting thing they learned in class. The projects can be a research paper, presentation , new
experiment or anything they find Inspiring. Jennifer Medbery mentioned what Dan Meyer has said
“imagine if we replace the math text-book with a lot of chances to ask thoughtful questions
about the surroundings “. In this classroom students can extend their creativity and learn how
to observe and think because they chose what they keen to, they are more likely to find their
passion. For example my parents enrolled my young brother in a creativity institute. In the
institute they measure kids’ intelligence to put them in the most beneficial level based on what
the kid was good at. And also they try their best to develop the abilities kids have and motivate
them to keep working on them. Ken Robinson has said you have to find your own talents
because they are not just lying around so institutes like this are one of the best ways to
discover talents and develop them. I noticed that my brother has become quick-witted and he
can deal with things better than kids on his age. I completely agree with this kind of learning
because it will cultivate intelligent thinking and would encourage kids to be creative to accomplish their
goals.
In order to produce creative students, teachers should pay more attention to the idea of creativity
because it is the key of an ideal and modern education system. In addition one of the biggest problems
regarding creativity is that students are not assigned activities which stimulate creativity and intellectual

The following represents a lesson plan that will help students improve on their literature in the
first grade. The students will understand the Ugly Duckling and other books based on the
illustrations and how they relate to the story. This template is based on the core standards to
make sure that students learn what is illuystration and how it is part of the story. The lesson plan
is prepared as a guide to the teacher on how best to offer instruction for achievement of the set
goals.
Grade Level
This lesson plan is designed for the first grade students and it will help add on to their previous
knpowldge on literature and particularly the Ugly Duckling. The students will be introduced to
the role of illustrations and how they fit inot the story. The students will understand the
contribution of illustrations as well as learn how to arrange them accordingly.
Instructional Model
Explicit/Teacher Modelling
The students will be invited to recall their knowlge on the Ugly Duckling and the book. The
studetns at the same time will be introduced to the concepts of the lesson as well as their
objective. It is important fr the students to know what is expcetd of them so that they can
devcelop individual goals in the class.
Guided Practice
The teacher will guide the students by explaining to them what they can do while you read the
students. In this case, the students are required to point to the pictures as one goes the student.
There will also be guided instruction through learning how to use the cards sheets. At the same
time, the teacher will show them how to point to the illustrations during the reading. The
teacher will also watch to check whether students have learned how to indicate to the correct
illustrations.
Independent Working Time

The students will be asked to use the sequencing boxes to match the illustrations which are
corresponding with the text. The independent working will be at the end of the story. At the
same time, the students will be asked various questions to show if they have understood what
illustrations are and how to arrange them properly.
