Polymet Case Study
Mining Paper
PolyMet is the first of a long list of companies that hope to take advantage of the world s largest
untouched deposit of copper located beneath northeast Minnesota near Hoyt Lakes. The company
is hopping to divulge 600 million dollars to operate an old mine in that area. The company has
held multiple town meeting in hopes to sway the public into agreeing with the construction of the
mine. Though this operation will create a lot of jobs (over 400 permanent jobs and thousands of
temporary ones) it should immediately be halted due to not only environmental concerns but also
ethics and moral concerns. This project should be halted because it has a sustained life span of
two decades, PolyMet is backed by a questionable company, and ... Show more content on

If PolyMet s mine creates a disastrous pollution the people will have to clean it up. The tax
payers in the future will end up footing the bill for this project. In a town where there are barely
any jobs for the people this will send them into financial ruin. Also, the cleanup cost is extremely
unpredictable and any clean up contract or financial contract that is made with PolyMet is not
going to cover this cleanup cost because it is unpredictable. The people will have to pay the
cleanup cost. If PolyMet became unable to complete the project the state will not receive any
money that they put into the project. This will also guarantee money shortage. Some might say that
this project will help the town find it s footing in the long haul and therefore we should support it.
They are wrong. This project is a disaster waiting to happen because the true magnitude of it is
unpredictable and it is impossible to solve a problem that one did not see coming.
The PolyMet mining project should be immediately halted because it has a sustained life span of
two decades, PolyMet is backed by a questionable company, and any contamination to the
environment by the project will put the town and its people at a significant risk. Though it will
create jobs the town s people should not bank their success on this

Roe Vs Wade Essay
Roe v. Wade was a decision made by United States Supreme Court regarding abortion in 1973. It
was, and still is, one of the most controversial decisions the Supreme Court has ever made.
Abortion is defined the ending of pregnancy by removing a fetus or embryo before it can survive
outside the uterus . The appellant was a single, pregnant woman from Texas who wished to get an
abortion. Prior to the court s decision, abortion was illegal under Texas state law except in cases
where the abortion would save the pregnant woman s life. The appellee was Henry Wade, a lawyer
defending the Texas state law. The court ruled on the side of Roe, with a 7 2 decision. The Supreme
Court ruled that the Texas statute violated Jane Roe s constitutional right to privacy , and argued
that the Constitution s First, Fourth, Ninth, and Fourteenth Amendments protect an... Show more

It was argued that anti abortion laws were the product of a Victorian social concern to discourage
illicit sexual conduct (543). Another reason abortion was previously prohibited was because the
procedure was a hazardous one for the woman (544). The court pointed out that this was no longer
valid or relevant in this day of age. They explained that abortion was now relatively safe , and that
mortality rates for women undergoing early abortions, where the procedure is legal, appear to be as
low as or lower than the rates of normal childbirth (544). When abortion is prohibited, women
seeking abortions sometimes tend to undergo illegal abortions, which are extremely unsafe.
Therefore, the court said, the state has a legitimate interest in seeing that abortion, like any other
medical procedure, is performed under circumstances that insure maximum safety for the patient
(544). When abortion was illegal, the mortality rate for women having abortions was significantly
higher than when it was made

Emerging Therapies For Sickle Cell Anemia
Emerging therapies for sickle cell anemia
Cesi Salmeron
Suny Rockland Community College
Abstract
Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited disorder that produces sickle or crescent shape red blood
cells. Thus, the mutated erythrocytes result in an inadequate supply of oxygen being transported
throughout the body. Research shows that among those affected the most with the sickle cell gene
are African Americans. In recent years, we have seen a decrease in mortality and morbidity
rates as a result of new approaches to treating the disease. The more we understand the
pathophysiology of sickle cell anemia, the more we learn about developing therapies for genetic
disorders such as SCA. In this paper, we will briefly discuss what sickle cell anemia is and possible
treatments for people with sickle cell anemia such as gene therapy and new drugs.
What is sickle cell anemia?
Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder. This missense mutation is
characterized by mutant beta globin subunits that tend to stick together (Cummings, 2014). As a
result, abnormally shaped red blood cells are produced by this disorder. The erythrocytes are
sickle or crescent shaped. Sickling occurs under hypoxic conditions, in which there is insufficient
supply of oxygen delivered throughout the body (Sun Xia, 2013). In order to inherit this
monogenic disease, one copy of the sickle globin gene from each parent must be passed on to the
offspring (Ashley Koch,

Essay on Rappaccini s Daughter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Rappaccini s Daughter by Nathaniel Hawthorne In Rappaccini s Daughter , Nathaniel Hawthorne
examines the combination of good and evil in people through the relationships of the story s main
characters. The lovely and yet poisonous Beatrice, the daughter of the scientist Rappaccini, is the
central figure of the story, while her neighbor Giovanni becomes the observer, participant, and
interpreter of the strange events that transpire within the garden next door. It is Giovanni s inability
to understand these events that eventually leads to Beatrice s death. Giovanni sees things that are
either all good or all bad. While he is quick to judge Beatrice, he is unable to examine his own
motives and thoughts. During the story,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hawthorne frequently uses words like imagine , seemed , or appeared to to cast a doubt upon
the validity of what Giovanni thinks he sees. Even Giovanni himself rationalizes the situation
and convinces himself that what he thought he saw did not happen. This is because in Giovanni
s mind, it is impossible to separate the physical from the spiritual. For him, if Beatrice s body is
poisonous, then so is her spirit. Giovanni is unable to see the possibilities for good and bad to be
simultaneously within someone. This problem is at the heart of this story and is what ultimately
causes Beatrice s death. Since Giovanni allows himself to disbelieve what he had seen earlier in
the garden, he is able to fall for Beatrice. Giovanni is drawn to Beatrice not because of the glamor
of science, but an interest in the unknown. He knows that all is not right in Rappaccini s garden
and he is fascinated with the mystery. As Giovanni and Beatrice get to know each other, they
develop a strong bond. However, for Giovanni this is not true love. Hawthorne provides the reader
with clues that question the integrity of Giovanni. For example, Hawthorne writes, Guasconti had
not a deep heart or at all events, its depths are not sounded now but he had a quick fancy, and an
ardent southern temperament, which rose every instant to higher fever pitch (Hawthorne 614). Not
only is Giovanni passionate in his lust for Beatrice, but he also

Touching Spirit Bear Character Analysis
Ben Mikaelsen s self realization novel Touching Spirit Bear is about a boy named Cole. Cole is
a 15 year old, whom others see as angry and evil. They do not understand Cole is only using his
anger in the wrong way. The only people who understand Cole are two men, Garvey and Edwin.
They recognize the pain of having anger. Cole is banished to a remote island in Alaska after he
attacks a boy named Peter sending him to the hospital. Cole changes on the island helping himself
and others along his quest to self realization. A lesson Cole learns throughout the story is anger
never leaves, but it shapes one for the good or the bad; it is all a choice.
As the novel begins, Cole is bullying Peter, so Peter tells the school to get Cole in trouble.
Instead of apologizing, Cole becomes enraged and he, warned the skinny red haired boy, giving
him a shove. He laughed when he saw the fear in Peter s eyes... he attacked him and started
hitting him hard in the face with his bare fists (7). This line from the novel represents using
anger in a horrid and gruesome manner and Cole felt no remorse. Therefore, this segment of the
book shows Cole before his transformations and before he could control his anger. This
demonstrates the choices Cole makes before he realizes anger is a choice and he can control it.
Cole s anger is like a wildfire and it spreads to Peter. Peter now feels sheer hatred and anger towards
Cole. The anger Cole ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

even though they both feel anger, they use it to help and guide others, rather than abusing them.
Also, the Skeptics forget to take into account Cole himself, has used anger in a positive light. Cole
uses his knowledge and new understanding to help Peter overcome his hatred towards him. This
proves anger is a choice and not bound to the aspects of hatred and

The Importance Of Beauty Adverts For Online Chinese...
As a woman on Facebook, my daily news feed is peppered with a barrage of beauty
advertisements. Ads for make up subscription boxes and diet teas wedge themselves between
harrowing news stories and cat memes. They fill side bars with flashing promises to improve
whatever it is that society says I need to improve, or reveal the next new thing to help me stay
young, unique, and relevant. While most are simply irritating and easy to ignore, none have been
quite as intriguing as the recent onslaught of ads for online Chinese clothing boutiques. These
online stores, based in places like Hong Kong and Shanghai, should easily garner customers with

One reason such companies can so routinely take advantage of people using Facebook s
infrastructure, they write, is that the social network s policing of users and advertisers is
limited to what happens on the service its monitoring doesn t extend to bad experiences users
have once an ad click takes them away from the site. In essence, Facebook absolves itself of any
involvement while also giving the retailers the platform to advertise as unscrupulously and
aggressively as they wish. It would appear that this unchecked partnership is the gateway for
many risky clothing purchases, but Chinese boutiques have also followed a trend set by larger
retailers to use bloggers instead of models to sell clothing. Beauty and fashion bloggers tend to
review these retailers extremely favorably, usually after partnering with the retailers through so
called blogger programs to receive free clothes in exchange for positive reviews and a flattering
camera angle while they model their latest clothing haul (Porter). Popular bloggers wearing and
promoting the hottest fashions can contribute greatly to increased desirability. According to Nia

Accidental Death of an Anarchist
Q) Critically analyze the Figure of Madman in Dario Fo s play The Accidental Death of an
anarchist.
A) Dario Fo s play The Accidental Death of an Anarchist (1970) lies in the category of
revolutionary theatre that challenges the fascist regime of Italy. The play is a farce based on
events involving a real person, Giuseppe Pinelli, who fell or was thrown from the fourth floor
window of a Milan police station in 1969. He was accused of bombing a bank. The accusation is
widely seen as part of the Italian Far Right s strategy of tension. Just like Fo s other play, this play
is also funny and subversive and shows a strong preference for the culture and traditions of the
ordinary people and a commitment to the left wing politics. The play ... Show more content on

He provides most of the humor content of the play. The madman is whimsical and he constantly
contradicts other characters as well as himself. His series of logical/illogical arguments becomes
impossible to tackle and it frustrates the Police Department. Even though being termed as
psychologically unfit, the madman appears to be the most intelligent character in the play. He
ridicules the police officials for missing out on the basic concepts of English grammar and the use
of the most important COMMA that changes the meaning of a sentence. He dictates the terms of
law and judiciary to police officials. He is extremely sarcastic. He ridicules the superintendent for
assuming the railway man planted the bomb in railway station without any substantiate evidence
and sarcastically rebukes the kindergarten logic .
The people in power appear to be inhuman and brute in their actions, and the sacred governmental
place, the police station appears to be a madhouse or a slaughterhouse. The madman, even though
he is mad appears to be the sanest character in the play. In fact, he appears to be directing the play
according to his wishes. Suffering from a disease

Social Hierarchies In Ancient Mesopotamia
The main social hierarchies in ancient Mesopotamian societies tended to be very similar. In
general, everything revolved around the King and the upper class such as, priests, scribes,
merchants and artisans, and the majority of society consisted of commoners and slaves, whose
way of life revolved around farming. For example, The Code of Hammurabi, law 15 states, If a
man should enable a palace slave, a palace slave woman, a commoner s slave, or a commoner s
slave woman to leave through the main city gates, he shall be killed (p. 19). Another great
example is Law 112 that posits, If a merchant should give silver to a trading agent for an
investment venture, and he incurs a loss on his journeys, he shall return silver to the merchant in
the amount of the capital sum (p. 20). It is also important to note that the King was known to have

Society was clearly patriarchal and fathers had considerable power over their families. However,
women appeared to have more protection under The Code of Hammurabi. A male could sell
their family members into slavery. Law 117 stated, If an obligation is outstanding against a man
and he sell or gives into debt service his wife, his son, or his daughter, they shall perform service
in the house of their buyer or of the one who holds them in debt service for three years; their
release shall be secured in the fourth year (p. 20). If the father wanted to disinherit child, they
had to prove evidence of behavior and bring it before the judges. Law 169 describes this process,
If he should be guilty of a grave offense deserving the penalty of disinheritance by his father, they
shall pardon him for his first one; if he should commit a grave offense a second time, the father
may disinherit his son (p. 22). This method provided women and their children a little protection

Design Of Reliable And Effective Damage Detection Techniques
Problem Definition
Composite materials and structures are particularly attractive for aerospace applications due to their
high stiffness, high strength and low weight properties. The use of such structures allows for an
overall aircraft mass reduction, reduced fuel consumption and increased service life resulting in a
reduction in aircraft operating costs.
Early detection of damage within composite structures is of prime importance to safety and
reliability. When a void is present, internal stresses in the material are not distributed evenly,
resulting in high stress concentrations around the area where the damage has occurred. In general
the presence of defects results in poor structural performance, decreased load carrying ... Show

Shape memory alloys, optical fibres, piezoelectric and magnetostrictive materials currently
represent the most suitable options for smart structural applications. Piezoelectric and
magnetostrictive materials have both sensing and actuation capabilities.
With the recent development of magnetostrictive material (Terfenol D) in particle form it is
possible to embed or surface bond a smart layer in composites structures without sacrificing their
mechanical properties while exploiting the larger strain as compared to the use of piezoelectric
materials. [3][[4] demonstrated the feasibility of sensing delaminations in composite laminates
using embedded magnetostrictive particle layers, [5] use a magnetostrictive patch to sense for
multiple delaminations. Configurations employed so far make use of external sensors and offline
inspections. This paper proposes a magnetostrictive sensor configuration for an online, structural
integrity monitoring system.
Background
Magnetostriction
Magnetostriction is a property of ferromagnetic materials that exhibit a mechanical strain in
response to an applied external magnetic field. This effect is a reversible exchange of energy
between the mechanical and the magnetic form. Magnetostriction was first described in 1842 by
James Joule after he observed that a sample of

might influence from three dominant of needs, which is the Need for Achievement, Power and
Affiliation. These three needs will occur when someone is acting according with their desire and

Firstly, people in the group of the Need for Achievement (N Ach), they likely desire to accomplish
something difficult and do some challenging tasks on a high level. This achievement oriented
people share few common characteristics such as they always try to have success and need to

people like to organize the efforts of others to achieve the goals of the organization. High power
people enjoy competition and status oriented positions. While these people are attracted to

The Ideas, Meanings, And Power Dynamics
The ideas, meanings, and power dynamics in the three books we read are very different, however
some similarities are present. As far as veiling, the meanings within each book are primarily
complimentary. When looking at the views on how certain affairs, such as veiling, should be
enforced and interacted with, we see more skewed ideas. In general, all three show hegemonic
qualities, yet Young and Defiant in Tehran reveals more dominating than hegemonic qualities.
Veiling is an extremely debated and controversial topic all over the world. From what has been
revealed, it can be presumed that a substantial difference of veiling across the board, is
enforcement. From Veiled Sentiments to Young and Defiant in Tehran, the differences in ideas
regarding veiling are noticeably contrasting. The three anthropology texts involved, include further
inside information and feelings regarding veiling. In Veiled Sentiments by Lila Abu Lughod,
veiling is a choice and is not forced on women. Due to the faith and freedom of choice, most
women willingly and happily veilproperly. Although sexuality is not a popular norm among the
Bedouin, it is not the sole reason for veiling. Granted, women will be criticized and mocked for not
veiling or taking part in sexual affiliations. Such mockery is described in a story where
grandmothers react to the granddaughters Western style negligees. Once the grandmothers had

Describe A Happy Family Analysis
I m going to tell you about one of my friends, Sumi, and her family, who live right next to my
apartment. We have been neighbors for many years. Their house in Vietnam was very close to
mine, and when my family moved to New Zealand, we rent an apartment near theirs. I met Sumi
when I was in secondary school. She is the only child in the family so she gets the undivided
love and attention of her parents. Her parents have only her to spend the money on and not have
to share it among other siblings. So, when she was a child, she got more toys than normal, and she
used to share toys with me. She is the one who taught me play chess and always gives me a
shoulder to cry on when I need emotional support.
Her father is a lawyer while his wife is a school teacher. Both of them are very kind and highly
educated. I think they are a very happy couple. I have experienced some events where the resolved
their arguments without yelling and without trying to win the argument. They set their egos aside.
They often spend time together by travelling to different regions of Vietnam. While they were
travelling, Sumi stayed with my family.
I like this family because all members in this family are lovely, kind and obliging.

The Unethical Decisions of Cutting Corners on Construction...
Ethics
The reason that most people go into construction is because it is a job skill that can be used world
wide, and there are many different ways to make a decent living. Due to the current economic
situation, the construction business has been sluggish. Contractors have been earning a smaller
amount than they used to and this causes, most contractors and subs to cut corners and the
customer or owner pays the ultimate price of lousy job. Most of these activities are unethical and
dangerous.
Ethics is described as the duty as a person to do the righteous actions and have respectable morals.

carry out ethical acts in all situations. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Situational ethics can be when hard hats are required when working outside the building but not
when inside due to the heat. Ethical behavior should not wave around but steady and firm. One
of the major areas in which ethics have to be implemented and is tied into is safety. Even though
safety is everyone s job, it is theoretically the job of the contractor to safety, which is ethical and
moral part of the job. As a contractor, he is the one in charge to provide and enforce a safe
working environment and also hiring a safety engineer to oversee this part of the project. If the
contractor defrauds on safety for any reason, it is considered unethical. Due to this stringent rules
and previous mistakes, this is a big priority that must be done.
Unethical practices in construction are bid rigging, bid shopping, and front end loading. These are
all forms of collusion that are unethical and schemes that are associated with the construction
business. Bid rigging is the way that scheming competing contractors effectively increase the
prices where owners are often federal, state, or local governments. They acquire services by put
out competing bids; in which, competitors agree in before hand who will be submitting the

of big name contractors would use to help each other out, but the owner is the one paying and

Private Prisons Vs. Federal Prisons
Private prisons are supposedly more cost effective than state or federal prisons. Or that is what
their representatives say. But regardless of whether they save money or not, are they truly
beneficial for our communities? This article hopes to break down some of the myths these private
prison corporations have used to push their agenda and discuss how that is far from the case. By
doing so, the reader can form his/her own conclusions on how pervasive and detrimental private
prisons have become within our communities. Additionally, by informing as many people as
possible about the harmful effects of privatizing the correctional system in our nation, we can soon
hope to address some of the emerging problems such as our increased prisonpopulations,
endangerment of prisoners staff personnel, and whether it truly is cost effective.
However, before we can dive into the dilemmas that the prison industrial complex created we must
first define what they are and how did they originate within our country. First, the private prison
system is not a new phenomenon. Although the first appearances of these facilities are not the ones
we think of today, the private sector s involvement in incarcerating people emerged in the early
eighteenth century. These privately operated facilities, in part, gained popularity because they used
the prisoners as laborers, artisans, and other needed occupations in the community. By the mid
nineteenth century, providers constructed the modern private

The Security Has Become A Hot Button Issue
National security has become a hot button issue here in the United States. Rather than representing
other nations, opposing forces represent different ideologies. Enemy personnel may appear as
anyone or come from anywhere, even from the United States. These enemies have a potential to
acquire dangerous weapons and cause detrimental amounts of damage to our nation. To save the
country from these extreme life threatening circumstances, where there is clear and specific
evidence, torture is ought to be reasonable so as to spare innocent lives. Most people in a civilized
nation disagree with torture. However, in compelling and threatening circumstances it may be
allowed. Here is the reason, Many terrorist organizations take advantage of the situation and make
an entryway for an assault. Without the usage of torture, it would take extra time and open doors
for another strike later on. Through the use of torture, the CIA gained useful data by interrogating

Feminist Perspective In Macbeth
Macbeth is a tragedy by Shakespeare which dramatises the theoretical feud between masculinity and
femininity whilst exploring the extent in which morality is pushed to gain power. Imbedded in the
storyline of the play is an unconventional expression of gender which can be further explored
through the feminist critical perspective lens. The feminist critical perspective challenges the
common viewpoint by re evaluating texts and highlighting patriarchal ideas of gender. Therefore the
play can be interpreted in way that seeks further insight on the differences between the portrayal of
men and women, self ambition, power abuse and common stereotypes that are depicted through the
motives of the complex characters.
The play provides a substantial amount of violent and disturbing imagery with a distorted view of
masculinity and femininity. The characters in Macbeth are depicted as hostile to the embodiment of
what it means to be a woman whilst admiring the strength and power of a man. When Macbeth
exclaims For thy undaunted mettle should compose nothing but males, (Act 1 Sc7) wishing only
male children as he believes them to be superior and able to continue his bloodline. It is seen in
Lady Macbeth s actions as well as words which presents the idea that she has an unhealthy focus on
the world of men, something she is seen to value upon all other things. Furthermore, Lady Macbeth
serves as a figure that challenges the line between masculinity and femininity when necessary. Her

Downtown Revitalization
Revitalization efforts in downtown areas have gained momentum over the past few decades, this
paper is focused on revitalization strategies, recognizing the process of decline, while identifying
key strategies used in downtown revitalization efforts over the past fifty years (Faulk 2006).
Downtowns, unlike suburban shopping malls or office complexes, evolved slowly over time,
responding to changing technologies, social and economic patterns. A city s identity relies heavily
on the image of its downtown, so inevitably cities of all sizes commit themselves to achieving
successful downtown redevelopment (Robertson 1995). As I have been reading literature on
downtown revitalization a number of strategies and principles have surfaced. Many of... Show more

Before the 1870 s downtowns where not developed as a centralized retail district, but catered
exclusively to the immediate population (Ward 1971). Early Downtown Development Many
downtowns first emerged as a distinctive place due to elite residents with homes in the area, which
served as meeting places for important business transactions. By the late 19th century downtowns
had typically been laid out with designated business blocks (Ford 2003). The growth of the business
block as an economic center and booming downtown forced out any competition that were not
appropriate with high rents, social pressure and architectural change (Ford 2003, pp 45). This was
the origin of the spatial structure and land use patterns that are associated with contemporary
downtowns. The origin of the town structure is most commonly affiliated with European cities as
models of spatial layout. Specialty business and retail districts that characterized American
downtowns and what we now image a good downtown to be are directly linked to it European
counterpart. The key characteristic that defer from the European model was the tendency for
American cities to be street oriented rather then place oriented. This contributed to the more linear
structure of the city, business pursued locations on the main street rather then near major plazas or
religious buildings (Robertson 1997). A Change of Pace:

Anti Depressant Research Paper
Anti depressants and Anti psychiatric Drugs The debate to prescribe children psychiatric drugs

The investigator Joe Raedle reported that, In December 2006, four year old Rebecca Riley was
found dead in her parents home, a victim of a prescription drug overdose. An autopsy revealed
four different drugs in her system: an antihistamine (used to treat allergies), a cough suppressant,
an anti seizure drug and a blood pressure medication. The last two drugs had been prescribed not
because Rebecca suffered from seizures or high blood pressure. Rather, Rebecca s psychiatrist had
prescribed the drugs to alleviate her attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar
disorder, respectively (Raedle, Joe). A large number of new stimulant and nonstimulants users were
children and teenagers, where doctors felt comfortable prescribing such unpredictable drugs. The

the 1990s and into the early 2000s, overall use of anti depressants soared, with sales increasing by

reducing depression symptoms in the long term. The first four weeks of treatment are the most
important and a parent or responsible guardian should supervise the use of anti depressants by

The Debate On The House Of Lords
The prospect for change in the House of lords has been an endless debate in British politics. The
structure of the Chamber has bought about a significant argument for a transformative change in
its composition. The upper chamber has already experienced some reformations over the last
100 years, including the Life Peerages Act (1958) and the Lords Act of 1999. The Lords Act
reduced the number of hereditary peers to 92 members. This was seen as a significant amendment
but academics claim a greater change is needed to establish a more democratic and effective body
(Seidle, 2003). Brazier argues the House of Lordscontinues to be unelected, unrepresentative and
unaccountable (2008, p. 66). The current composition of the Lords consists of mostly appointed
peers, known as life peers, whom are appointed by the Prime Minister. There are currently 707
life peers and 88 hereditary peers. Most importantly, the chamber includes only 26 bishops which
remain the only elected members (Parliament UK (2015). This significant proportion suggests the
necessity for reforming the composition of the Lords. This essay will assess the merits of
switching to a fully elected House of Lords. I will use the elected U.S. Senate to assess whether a
fully elected upper housewould be an effective reform. The Conservative Liberal Democrat
coalition in 2010 agreed to bring forward proposals for a wholly or mainly elected upper chamber
on the basis of proportional representation (Russell, 2013, p. 265).

Compare And Contrast Wonder Woman And Wonder Women
Question II Compare and Contrast: Wonder Woman and The Incredibles Throughout this semester
we had been discussing the portrayals of mentally ill patients via mainstream media, and how their
impressions on the world through the eyes of popular culture sort of filter our vision amongst them.
In successfully doing so, we then shifted toward another objective: the portrayals of gender
stereotypes in both typical and atypical ways, primarily as a result of popular culture and
mainstream media depictions. Specifically, we ll be comparing and contrasting between The
Incrediblesand Wonder Woman before arriving at the core of what the reputation for both gender
stereotypical and atypical roles hold today. Upon watching the films The... Show more content on

We see a minor glimpse of this inattentiveness in the film Inside Out, where the family is having
dinner at the dinner table and the wife is forced to signal the husband. Furthermore, the wife
(Helen, Elastigirl, Mrs. Incredible) is portrayed as being this occupied housewife and suburban
mom who partakes in the usual chores and activities that would be expected of her, partly as a
result of the stereotypical gender roles derived from popular culture. However, as she is known
to acquire super powers herself, sort of allows for the distinction between the ideal traits that a
women is commonly known to have, while embodying this abyss of qualities that highlight her
typical traits in an atypical format. For example, whilst still remaining as the role of a mother,
she does appear to posses the qualities of having strong leadership, being analytical, athletic,
dominant, and self sufficient, all a while remaining feminine, sensitive, and compassionate. Of
course, this is nothing short of what s being commonly seen today, but the reaction of it all
would ve been seen as taboo many years back. Likewise, this particularly coincides with the
blockbuster film Wonder Woman, a story about an Amazonian princess who is forced to depart
from her homeland to search for and destroy the villainous God, Ares. Not surprisingly, this
description would not appear to be appropriate for a female in any way, or at least not by

minerals and water. But according to chemistry, foods can be classified as micro nutrients (vitamins
and minerals required in small amount) and macro nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats
required in higher amount). Carbohydrates can be classified into two different classifications as
sugars (monosaccharides and oligosaccharides) and non sugars or polysaccharides according to its
chemical structure. The whole classification of carbohydrates can be classified as follows.
Monosaccharides are mostly common five carbon or six carbon poly hydroxyl ketones and
aldehydes. Monosaccharides can be also called as simplest sugar such as glucose, galactose and
fructose. Two monosaccharides are able to join together in condensation reactions by using
glycosidic linkage to from disaccharides. Maltose, lactose and fructose are the examples of
disaccharides. The most complex form of the sugars are polysaccharides and they contain many
monosaccharides connected through glycosidic linkage. Both disaccharides and polysaccharides do
hydrolysis to produce components of monosaccharides which be absorbed by the body.
The glucose is the primary source of energy and it s the simple sugar body prefers. When glucose
enters the body, body stimulates pancreas to produce insulin. Insulin is one of the hormone
produced by pancreas to regulates the carbohydrates and metabolise the body fat.

A Day At Merritt Reservoir
Have you ever smelled 4 day old moldy tube socks that have been soaked in lake water and left
under a bed? As a cabin keeper at Merritt Reservoir I had many bizarre encounters in a mere three
month summer break. Imagine walking into the crammed bait shop on a crisp summer morning.
You clock in for the day and gather all the supplies needed to get the job done. These supplies may
range from the typical cleaning utensils such as rags and window cleaner, extra toiletpaper and
towels, Febreeze, and rubber gloves for sticky situations. However, you also must be sure to
grab mousetraps, a bible, and a strange device that consists of a hook on a long wooden rod. You
will soon learn what these items are for, and how handy they can be throughout the day ahead.
The ongoing task of the day is to heave your massive cleaning cart up and down the slopping old
concrete walkways leading to each cabin. This monster is convenient since it carries all of your
items and you have them handy all at once, but can be a workout on a long day. When cleaning
cabins, you do not have a set amount of hours to look forward to finishing. Every day, you are
given a set amount of cabins, which can vary depending on how busy the lake is. You must
complete that set amount throughout the day, regardless of how fast or slow you work. The first
cabin of the day houses a family of 4 who must rarely rough it in the woods. They have requested
every day this week to be the first to get cleaned out in the

The Two Main Causes Of The Mexican-American War
Mexican American War
While often thought of as a small and insignificant war fought by the Americans, the Mexican
American War serves a lot of importance to the foundation and history of our country. This war
determined whether or not the United States would become a dominant power on the continent and
it, more importantly, established the size of the nation. The Mexican American War lasted from
1846 1848, but by the time President James Polk took office in 1845, United States Mexico
relations were already off to a bad start. While the Mexican American War was mainly caused by
the idea of Manifest Destiny and the Texas War for Independence/Annexation, it was also a major
turning point in the debate over slavery in the United States because of the Missouri Compromise,
Compromise of 1850, and the Wilmot Proviso. The two main causes for the war were the
American s obsession with the concept and maintenance of Manifest Destiny and, the second cause
was, the Texas War for Independence/Annexation. Manifest Destiny is, basically, the belief that the
United States had a God given right to occupy and civilize the whole continent. With more
Americans looking for land to occupy westward due to the fact that there wasn t enough space on
the east coast, the fact that most of those areas were occupied didn t matter. Instead, an attitude that
English speaking American would do a better job of taking care of the lands than Native Americans
of Spanish Speaking Mexicans ruled the minds

Community Ecology Lab
Ecosystem is made up of all populations living together and the physical factors with which they
interact with their environment. The ecosystem gets its energy from the only source, the sun,
which make it important. The sun plays significant roles in ecosystem functioning of
photosynthesis. In this lab, we will focus mostly on population and community ecology. Population
ecology is a group of organisms of the same species living in the same place at the same time.
Factors that affect the number of individuals living in a habitat are the population growth rate, size,
birth and death rates. Community ecology focuses on the interactions between organisms as to

that make up the ecosystem. We found a diversity of plants and animals: millipede (apheloria

species of interest were found during the observing time. The time and day that we did the

Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is to analyse and explain how the ecosystem work in our community. How
birth and death rates have impact on the living population. If the rate of the bug eating bird grow
larger then the population of the insects will decline. Discussion:
Food web is a network of food chains with a number of feeding connections amongst different
organism of a biotic community. The food chain starts from decayed plants and animals to the
micro organisms and then to detritus feeding organism and to other predator. There are three
trophic levels. Starting with producers, consumers, and decomposers. Plants such as holly leaves
and pine trees are types of producer that make their own food through photosynthesis and do not
depend on any other organism for nutrition. Millipedes and darkling beetles are in the next trophic

Treating Information Privacy Flaws Of The Federal Trade...
TREATING INFORMATION PRIVACY DEFICIENCIES IN CYBERSPACE
Introduction
Scholars are divided on the fundamental question of the Federal Trade Commission s (FTC)
adjudicative capacity under the FTC Act. The FTC uses a reasonableness standard and considers
each company s data security practices on a case by case basis. For more than a decade, the FTC
s enforcement of data security actions invoked under В§5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act
(FTC Act) resulted in consent decrees and settlements, subsequently scrutinized by practitioners as
carrying as much precedential value as judicial opinions.
In 2015, the Third Circuit Court Appeals decision in Wyndham reinforced the FTC s authority to
pursue enforcement actions against companies that do not have reasonable data security practices.
Notwithstanding a motion to dismiss arguing that, inter alia, (1) the FTC lacks authority to
regulate under В§5 of the FTC Act and (2) the FTC failed to provide fair notice and of what
constitutes reasonable data security standards and (3) В§5 does not govern the security of payment
card data; Wyndham marked the first time federal courts held that the FTC has authority under В§5
of the FTC Act to enforce data security practices.
Equipped with Wyndham, the FTC s guidelines in providing information about what acts
constitutes unfair or deceptive practices carry more precedential force than ever before. Essentially,
the Circuit Court of Appeals holding in Wyndham affirms the FTC s discretion to

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit s Impacts on the World of...
Everything is measured, even the hottest and the coldest temperatures can be measured, and in that
case, the word fahrenheit comes into use. the book Word People by Nancy Sorel, defines
fahrenheit as pertaining to a temperature scale that registers the freezing point of water as 32 F and
the boiling point as 212 F under standard atmospheric pressure (Sorel 99). But the word fahrenheit,
itself has its history of its creation, and was named after a physicist engineer, named Daniel Gabriel
Fahrenheit. Fahrenheit would soon change the world of measuring.
Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit was born on Danzig, Germany in 1869. He was one of Concordia and
Daniel Schumann Fahrenheit s five children. He was the oldest amongst his two brothers and three
sisters, whom all survived throughout their childhood. Fahrenheit s mother was the daughter of a
well known Danzig business family (Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit Biography ) . His father was a
wealthy merchant, and therefore his family was a merchant family, they in several Hanseatic cities

suddenly died from eating poisonous mushrooms on August 14, 1701 (Sorel 99). His guardian sent
him to Amsterdam, Netherlands to study business, where he spent most of his life.

The Bolshevik Of The Soviet Revolution
The Bolsheviks success in the 1917 October revolution, gave them full power under the leadership
of Vladimir Lenin. Their aim after successfully overthrowing the Russian autocracy was to create a
socialist state. His[Lenin s] view was that socialism should be a society where the working people
control their own fate, a society organized to benefit the vast majority. This view was the
foundation for Lenin s efforts in socialist construction. In order to create this society they; formed a
new socialist government; introduced the first stage of communismstate capitalism; issued a decree
on land as promised in their manifesto and focused on industrialising and collectivising in order
to facilitate a socialist state. However, problems which may cause failure in the creation of a
socialist state include the civil war for slowing down progress, the introduction of the NEP (a
revert back to capitalism?), the need to consolidate power and the brutal use of the red army.
The Bolshevik s first protocol was to create a socialist government. Lenin began by replacing the
government of the capitalist class with the rule of the working people. This new socialist
government was compiled of mass organizations called Soviets, councils democratically elected by
workers, peasants and soldiers. One of the key functions of the socialist government, in Lenin s
view, was guaranteeing democracy for the working people. As opposed to a capitalist government

Two theories which I found to be interesting are Social Control Theory and Labeling Theory.
Social Control Theory is a theory that claims individuals commit crimes based on their social
interactions with others. In other words, an individual s social group such as friends and family aid
in determining if they will commit a crime based on the moral values their loved ones express.
Thus, this theory ultimately comes to claim that the relationships a person has with other people
take on a great role in crime as a lack of obtaining these emotional connections with others causes
individuals to commit crimes because they lack these ties to others to encourage

The Houses of Parliament, Cas Vromans
The Palace of Westminster is the meeting spot of the House of Commons and the House of Lords,
the two homes of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Generally known as the Houses of
Parliament after its inhabitants, it is otherwise called the heart of British legislative issues . The
Palace lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster, in focal London.
The principal illustrious castle was based on the site in the eleventh century, and Westminster was
the main living place of the Kings of England until flame decimated a great part of the complex in
1512. After that, it served as the home of the Parliament of England, which had been meeting there
since the thirteenth century, furthermore as the seat of the Royal Courts of Justice, situated in and
around Westminster Hall. In 1834, a considerably more noteworthy fire desolated the vigorously
remade Houses of Parliament, and the main huge medieval structures to survive were Westminster
Hall, the Cloisters of St Stephen s, the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft, and the Jewel Tower.
Its name, which gets from the neighboring Westminster Abbey, may allude to both of two

Ancient Greek Disobeying Authority

Current day civilizations and current day life have been influenced greatly by Ancient Greek

ancient justice systems, which authorizes the breaking of rules and makes it pardonable and
respectable. Many of these acts of disobeying authority are demonstrated, in both Ancient Greek
times and current times, as Gods break rules based off their wants or based off of their desire to

many every day individuals commit crimes and are forgiven for them. It is desired and acceptable,

During the Battle of Marathon in Ancient Greek times that resulted from the Persians
challenging the boundaries and laws put in place by Persian and Greek rulers, not only did
Greek undergo conflicts with the Persians, but issues were also present regarding the actions of
Greek rulers. Callimachus and Miltiades, the two Greek commanders at the time chose to have
their men fight in this war. This could be viewed as wrong, due to the fact that these men were
forced break moral laws by killing and also had the chance of dying themselves; yet the decision to
participate in war and send men to die and to kill was considered acceptable because it would likely
result in a better outcome for Greece. When the day was over, the Greeks had won one of history s
most famous victories. (Battle of Marathon: Greeks Versus the Persians) The Grecians did win,
proving that this war was the best choice for Greece, which would continue the justification for
the challenging of these rules. Many Grecians broke the code of society that says it is not right
to harm or kill others when they claimed to have killed about 6,400 Persians. (Battle of
Marathon: Greeks Versus the Persians) Although this is an outrageous amount of deaths, the war
and the challenging of rules caused by decisions Callimachus and Miltiades made to send their
men to die and to challenge rules themselves by killing others was considered acceptable because
it lead to the best outcome. This idea has influenced society today due to the fact that kings,
presidents, or other rulers have the authority to break rules simply because they are in control.
Both the Grecians and current day individuals convey the message that it is acceptable for those in
charge to go against the rules of society. Civilians look to their rulers to make the right decisions in

period that fall rates were nearly 4 fold higher in the American than in the Japanese residents
(Lipsitz et al., 1994, p. 957). This shows the negative effect that sitting has on human behavior
cross culturally by comparing the lifestyles of societies whose people are deskbound to ones that
are not. When cultures such as the Japanese perform tasks such as squatting to use the toilet, or to
stand up from a bed that is on the floor (not elevated) requires a full range of motion. This full
range of motion is lost when humans sit in an unnatural state for a majority of their day, and makes
aging an accelerated process. It s known that sitting and rising from the floor is a basic functional
process integrated into all human movement patters, and when one loses the ability to perform this
action, they lose their livelihood. Performing this action requires proper posture, flexibility and
muscle strength, which are all weakened by being deskbound and the sedentary lifestyle. A
Brazilian study created a sitting to rising test (SRT) to judge whether or not functional capabilities,
such as getting up off the floor with little

The Persuaders Documentary Analysis
The Persuaders is a 90 minute documentary which draws on experts in and observers of the world
of marketing to explore how the culture of marketing influences what Americans buy, how they
view the world around them, and their expectation of themselves. The beginning of the film
explains how marketers are looking for new ways to increase not the usefulness of a product, but it
s image. Once, advertising showed the public what the product did, but now it persuades them to
purchase the identity of the item what it means to buy or use it. The second half of the film offers
insight into how the new identity marketingis being applied to politics, and it s effect on the
democratic process. This documentary explored the effect marketing

Founders Day The Track Reflection
On September 15th, one of my first few days at Townsend Harris, I came to English 1 during
Band 7 and when I sat down to look at the board, my first reaction was to be confused. Founders
Day: The Track Project wasn t a phrase I d heard of from any friends or upperclassmen. After
going through a lesson about the Flushing Remonstrance and it s relations to the rivalry between
Townsend Harris and Peter Stuyvesant, I was reluctant to hear about the project. I d guessed that
it would be a bland and was pleasantly surprised to hear that we would have options. Of these
four options, I figured I wouldn t have the resources or the time to complete the film track (which
would likely have to be done outside of school with a camera) and figured journalism... Show more

I found that when there was a set plan for every day, I had motivation to finish what I was doing
because I had a point in mind where I would be able to stop and reward myself by knowing that I
was on task and on schedule. There were other groups that were finishing their work on Friday and
continuing to work on it even on Saturday but we were able to finish a day early due to our
detailed plans and deadlines that we set for ourselves. I found that students at Townsend Harris
work hard and get schoolwork done. At my old school, group projects were always a real pain
because I would always end up doing all of the work. Here, well at least in my group, everyone did
their fair share. In the process of this, I also learned a lot about Townsend Harris as a person as well
as how Townsend Harris High School was created. Townsend Harris funded the founding of City
College and allowed it to become possible. After City College was closed down by LaGuardia,
Townsend Harris High School was founded by alumni of the

The Major Challenges Of Social Work
Social workers perform extensive duties ranging from providing support to those faced with
difficult situations, emotional stress, or significant change in their lives to diagnose emotional,
behavioral, or mental health disorders in individuals. Many different social, economic, or school
issues will need the services of a social worker. As such, social workis the major profession
worldwide that helps individual people, families, groups, organizations, and communities to prevent
or resolve problems in social and psychological functioning, meet basic human needs, achieve life
enhancing goals, and create a just society. Jane Addamshelped build social work during her time as
a founder of the U.S. Settlement House Movement to establish settlement houses in poor urban
areas for volunteer middle class social workers to alleviate the povertyof their low income
neighbors. Addams ideas continue to influence social, political, and economic reform in the
United States as well as internationally. Through the study of social work, one is able to help
people that may struggle with providing basic necessities for one s family, help people that may
struggle with drug or alcohol problems, and help people experiencing problems with family and
relationship conflicts. Through the various services they provide, social workers are able to help
greatly impact and reduce current societal ills, such as poverty, drug overdoses, and crime rates.
Many social workers work with families who may not

Francis Bacon s En Dublin, Irlanda En 1909
Francis Bacon

Body Cameras Advantages
The use of body cameras as a resource in the law enforcement field has been adopted by agencies
all across the country. However, body cameras have both beneficial applications and
disadvantages in their use and application. Officers in many agencies across the country are
required to wear body cameras to document what officers do on a daily basis or during
interactions with the public. Body cameras have advantages and disadvantages that continue to be
debated if it is a viable option for the future of law enforcement. The benefits of body cameras
have created a market for body cameras in the law enforcement field and have created a push from
both the public and law enforcement agencies to adopt similar technology. The benefits that were

In the digital age everyone wants to see a video of what happened rather than eyewitness accounts.
This video evidence can allow officers to monitor their own behavior while also showing t the
oobleck they are a satisfactory member of the police agency. Body cameras have been adopted by
many agencies and I feel that they will not be going away unless a new technology replaces the
system in place. The new technology in the criminal justice field that could be adopted by law
enforcement agencies is the way for officers to run facial recognition on individuals on their
patrol. This facial recognition could be developed in a variety of ways from running software in
the car on people who pass the vehicle. Another way that this software could be implemented is
through the use of goggles or glasses much like an augmented reality headset. This can create a
realtime way for officers to identify individuals to see if the have a BOLO or have an outstanding
warrant. Facial recognition would have to take great leaps to make it a practical way for officers to
identify suspects. This software could be used on a lower scale and officers could use a camera to
run the persons face through a variety of databases to identify an individual who may be lying
about their name. This would both be a time saver and allow police to patrol more effectively their

  • 2. Polymet Case Study Mining Paper PolyMet is the first of a long list of companies that hope to take advantage of the world s largest untouched deposit of copper located beneath northeast Minnesota near Hoyt Lakes. The company is hopping to divulge 600 million dollars to operate an old mine in that area. The company has held multiple town meeting in hopes to sway the public into agreeing with the construction of the mine. Though this operation will create a lot of jobs (over 400 permanent jobs and thousands of temporary ones) it should immediately be halted due to not only environmental concerns but also ethics and moral concerns. This project should be halted because it has a sustained life span of two decades, PolyMet is backed by a questionable company, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If PolyMet s mine creates a disastrous pollution the people will have to clean it up. The tax payers in the future will end up footing the bill for this project. In a town where there are barely any jobs for the people this will send them into financial ruin. Also, the cleanup cost is extremely unpredictable and any clean up contract or financial contract that is made with PolyMet is not going to cover this cleanup cost because it is unpredictable. The people will have to pay the cleanup cost. If PolyMet became unable to complete the project the state will not receive any money that they put into the project. This will also guarantee money shortage. Some might say that this project will help the town find it s footing in the long haul and therefore we should support it. They are wrong. This project is a disaster waiting to happen because the true magnitude of it is unpredictable and it is impossible to solve a problem that one did not see coming. The PolyMet mining project should be immediately halted because it has a sustained life span of two decades, PolyMet is backed by a questionable company, and any contamination to the environment by the project will put the town and its people at a significant risk. • 3. Roe Vs Wade Essay Roe v. Wade was a decision made by United States Supreme Court regarding abortion in 1973. It was, and still is, one of the most controversial decisions the Supreme Court has ever made. Abortion is defined the ending of pregnancy by removing a fetus or embryo before it can survive outside the uterus . The appellant was a single, pregnant woman from Texas who wished to get an abortion. Prior to the court s decision, abortion was illegal under Texas state law except in cases where the abortion would save the pregnant woman s life. The appellee was Henry Wade, a lawyer defending the Texas state law. The court ruled on the side of Roe, with a 7 2 decision. The Supreme Court ruled that the Texas statute violated Jane Roe s constitutional right to privacy , and argued that the Constitution s First, Fourth, Ninth, and Fourteenth Amendments protect an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was argued that anti abortion laws were the product of a Victorian social concern to discourage illicit sexual conduct (543). Another reason abortion was previously prohibited was because the procedure was a hazardous one for the woman (544). The court pointed out that this was no longer valid or relevant in this day of age. They explained that abortion was now relatively safe , and that mortality rates for women undergoing early abortions, where the procedure is legal, appear to be as low as or lower than the rates of normal childbirth (544). When abortion is prohibited, women seeking abortions sometimes tend to undergo illegal abortions, which are extremely unsafe. Therefore, the court said, the state has a legitimate interest in seeing that abortion, like any other medical procedure, is performed under circumstances that insure maximum safety for the patient (544). When abortion was illegal, the mortality rate for women having abortions was significantly higher than when it was made ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Emerging Therapies For Sickle Cell Anemia Emerging therapies for sickle cell anemia Cesi Salmeron Suny Rockland Community College Abstract Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited disorder that produces sickle or crescent shape red blood cells. Thus, the mutated erythrocytes result in an inadequate supply of oxygen being transported throughout the body. Research shows that among those affected the most with the sickle cell gene are African Americans. In recent years, we have seen a decrease in mortality and morbidity rates as a result of new approaches to treating the disease. The more we understand the pathophysiology of sickle cell anemia, the more we learn about developing therapies for genetic disorders such as SCA. In this paper, we will briefly discuss what sickle cell anemia is and possible treatments for people with sickle cell anemia such as gene therapy and new drugs. What is sickle cell anemia? Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder. This missense mutation is characterized by mutant beta globin subunits that tend to stick together (Cummings, 2014). As a result, abnormally shaped red blood cells are produced by this disorder. The erythrocytes are sickle or crescent shaped. Sickling occurs under hypoxic conditions, in which there is insufficient supply of oxygen delivered throughout the body (Sun Xia, 2013). In order to inherit this monogenic disease, one copy of the sickle globin gene from each parent must be passed on to the offspring (Ashley Koch, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay on Rappaccini s Daughter by Nathaniel Hawthorne Rappaccini s Daughter by Nathaniel Hawthorne In Rappaccini s Daughter , Nathaniel Hawthorne examines the combination of good and evil in people through the relationships of the story s main characters. The lovely and yet poisonous Beatrice, the daughter of the scientist Rappaccini, is the central figure of the story, while her neighbor Giovanni becomes the observer, participant, and interpreter of the strange events that transpire within the garden next door. It is Giovanni s inability to understand these events that eventually leads to Beatrice s death. Giovanni sees things that are either all good or all bad. While he is quick to judge Beatrice, he is unable to examine his own motives and thoughts. During the story,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hawthorne frequently uses words like imagine , seemed , or appeared to to cast a doubt upon the validity of what Giovanni thinks he sees. Even Giovanni himself rationalizes the situation and convinces himself that what he thought he saw did not happen. This is because in Giovanni s mind, it is impossible to separate the physical from the spiritual. For him, if Beatrice s body is poisonous, then so is her spirit. Giovanni is unable to see the possibilities for good and bad to be simultaneously within someone. This problem is at the heart of this story and is what ultimately causes Beatrice s death. Since Giovanni allows himself to disbelieve what he had seen earlier in the garden, he is able to fall for Beatrice. Giovanni is drawn to Beatrice not because of the glamor of science, but an interest in the unknown. He knows that all is not right in Rappaccini s garden and he is fascinated with the mystery. As Giovanni and Beatrice get to know each other, they develop a strong bond. However, for Giovanni this is not true love. Hawthorne provides the reader with clues that question the integrity of Giovanni. For example, Hawthorne writes, Guasconti had not a deep heart or at all events, its depths are not sounded now but he had a quick fancy, and an ardent southern temperament, which rose every instant to higher fever pitch (Hawthorne 614). Not only is Giovanni passionate in his lust for Beatrice, but he also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Touching Spirit Bear Character Analysis Ben Mikaelsen s self realization novel Touching Spirit Bear is about a boy named Cole. Cole is a 15 year old, whom others see as angry and evil. They do not understand Cole is only using his anger in the wrong way. The only people who understand Cole are two men, Garvey and Edwin. They recognize the pain of having anger. Cole is banished to a remote island in Alaska after he attacks a boy named Peter sending him to the hospital. Cole changes on the island helping himself and others along his quest to self realization. A lesson Cole learns throughout the story is anger never leaves, but it shapes one for the good or the bad; it is all a choice. As the novel begins, Cole is bullying Peter, so Peter tells the school to get Cole in trouble. Instead of apologizing, Cole becomes enraged and he, warned the skinny red haired boy, giving him a shove. He laughed when he saw the fear in Peter s eyes... he attacked him and started hitting him hard in the face with his bare fists (7). This line from the novel represents using anger in a horrid and gruesome manner and Cole felt no remorse. Therefore, this segment of the book shows Cole before his transformations and before he could control his anger. This demonstrates the choices Cole makes before he realizes anger is a choice and he can control it. Cole s anger is like a wildfire and it spreads to Peter. Peter now feels sheer hatred and anger towards Cole. The anger Cole ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They fill side bars with flashing promises to improve whatever it is that society says I need to improve, or reveal the next new thing to help me stay young, unique, and relevant. While most are simply irritating and easy to ignore, none have been quite as intriguing as the recent onslaught of ads for online Chinese clothing boutiques. In essence, Facebook absolves itself of any involvement while also giving the retailers the platform to advertise as unscrupulously and aggressively as they wish. It would appear that this unchecked partnership is the gateway for many risky clothing purchases, but Chinese boutiques have also followed a trend set by larger retailers to use bloggers instead of models to sell clothing. Beauty and fashion bloggers tend to review these retailers extremely favorably, usually after partnering with the retailers through so called blogger programs to receive free clothes in exchange for positive reviews and a flattering camera angle while they model their latest clothing haul (Porter). A) Dario Fo s play The Accidental Death of an Anarchist (1970) lies in the category of revolutionary theatre that challenges the fascist regime of Italy. The play is a farce based on events involving a real person, Giuseppe Pinelli, who fell or was thrown from the fourth floor window of a Milan police station in 1969. He was accused of bombing a bank. The accusation is widely seen as part of the Italian Far Right s strategy of tension. He ridicules the police officials for missing out on the basic concepts of English grammar and the use of the most important COMMA that changes the meaning of a sentence. He dictates the terms of law and judiciary to police officials. He is extremely sarcastic. He ridicules the superintendent for assuming the railway man planted the bomb in railway station without any substantiate evidence and sarcastically rebukes the kindergarten logic . Design Of Reliable And Effective Damage Detection Techniques Problem Definition Composite materials and structures are particularly attractive for aerospace applications due to their high stiffness, high strength and low weight properties. The use of such structures allows for an overall aircraft mass reduction, reduced fuel consumption and increased service life resulting in a reduction in aircraft operating costs. Early detection of damage within composite structures is of prime importance to safety and reliability. When a void is present, internal stresses in the material are not distributed evenly, resulting in high stress concentrations around the area where the damage has occurred. Piezoelectric and magnetostrictive materials have both sensing and actuation capabilities. With the recent development of magnetostrictive material (Terfenol D) in particle form it is possible to embed or surface bond a smart layer in composites structures without sacrificing their mechanical properties while exploiting the larger strain as compared to the use of piezoelectric materials. As far as veiling, the meanings within each book are primarily complimentary. When looking at the views on how certain affairs, such as veiling, should be enforced and interacted with, we see more skewed ideas. In general, all three show hegemonic qualities, yet Young and Defiant in Tehran reveals more dominating than hegemonic qualities. Veiling is an extremely debated and controversial topic all over the world. From what has been revealed, it can be presumed that a substantial difference of veiling across the board, is enforcement. From Veiled Sentiments to Young and Defiant in Tehran, the differences in ideas regarding veiling are noticeably contrasting. • 16. Private Prisons Vs. Federal Prisons Private prisons are supposedly more cost effective than state or federal prisons. Or that is what their representatives say. But regardless of whether they save money or not, are they truly beneficial for our communities? This article hopes to break down some of the myths these private prison corporations have used to push their agenda and discuss how that is far from the case. By doing so, the reader can form his/her own conclusions on how pervasive and detrimental private prisons have become within our communities. Additionally, by informing as many people as possible about the harmful effects of privatizing the correctional system in our nation, we can soon hope to address some of the emerging problems such as our increased prisonpopulations, endangerment of prisoners staff personnel, and whether it truly is cost effective. However, before we can dive into the dilemmas that the prison industrial complex created we must first define what they are and how did they originate within our country. First, the private prison system is not a new phenomenon. Although the first appearances of these facilities are not the ones we think of today, the private sector s involvement in incarcerating people emerged in the early eighteenth century. These privately operated facilities, in part, gained popularity because they used the prisoners as laborers, artisans, and other needed occupations in the community. To save the country from these extreme life threatening circumstances, where there is clear and specific evidence, torture is ought to be reasonable so as to spare innocent lives. Most people in a civilized nation disagree with torture. However, in compelling and threatening circumstances it may be allowed. Here is the reason, Many terrorist organizations take advantage of the situation and make an entryway for an assault. Without the usage of torture, it would take extra time and open doors for another strike later on. • 19. Feminist Perspective In Macbeth Macbeth is a tragedy by Shakespeare which dramatises the theoretical feud between masculinity and femininity whilst exploring the extent in which morality is pushed to gain power. Imbedded in the storyline of the play is an unconventional expression of gender which can be further explored through the feminist critical perspective lens. The feminist critical perspective challenges the common viewpoint by re evaluating texts and highlighting patriarchal ideas of gender. Therefore the play can be interpreted in way that seeks further insight on the differences between the portrayal of men and women, self ambition, power abuse and common stereotypes that are depicted through the motives of the complex characters. The play provides a substantial amount of violent and disturbing imagery with a distorted view of masculinity and femininity. The characters in Macbeth are depicted as hostile to the embodiment of what it means to be a woman whilst admiring the strength and power of a man. When Macbeth exclaims For thy undaunted mettle should compose nothing but males, (Act 1 Sc7) wishing only male children as he believes them to be superior and able to continue his bloodline. It is seen in Lady Macbeth s actions as well as words which presents the idea that she has an unhealthy focus on the world of men, something she is seen to value upon all other things. Furthermore, Lady Macbeth serves as a figure that challenges the line between masculinity and femininity when necessary. Her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Downtown Revitalization Revitalization efforts in downtown areas have gained momentum over the past few decades, this paper is focused on revitalization strategies, recognizing the process of decline, while identifying key strategies used in downtown revitalization efforts over the past fifty years (Faulk 2006). Downtowns, unlike suburban shopping malls or office complexes, evolved slowly over time, responding to changing technologies, social and economic patterns. A city s identity relies heavily on the image of its downtown, so inevitably cities of all sizes commit themselves to achieving successful downtown redevelopment (Robertson 1995). Before the 1870 s downtowns where not developed as a centralized retail district, but catered exclusively to the immediate population (Ward 1971). Early Downtown Development Many downtowns first emerged as a distinctive place due to elite residents with homes in the area, which served as meeting places for important business transactions. By the late 19th century downtowns had typically been laid out with designated business blocks (Ford 2003). The growth of the business block as an economic center and booming downtown forced out any competition that were not appropriate with high rents, social pressure and architectural change (Ford 2003, pp 45). This was the origin of the spatial structure and land use patterns that are associated with contemporary downtowns. The origin of the town structure is most commonly affiliated with European cities as models of spatial layout. Specialty business and retail districts that characterized American downtowns and what we now image a good downtown to be are directly linked to it European counterpart. The key characteristic that defer from the European model was the tendency for American cities to be street oriented rather then place oriented. This contributed to the more linear structure of the city, business pursued locations on the main street rather then near major plazas or religious buildings (Robertson 1997). A Change of Pace: ... • 23. The Debate On The House Of Lords The prospect for change in the House of lords has been an endless debate in British politics. The structure of the Chamber has bought about a significant argument for a transformative change in its composition. The upper chamber has already experienced some reformations over the last 100 years, including the Life Peerages Act (1958) and the Lords Act of 1999. The Lords Act reduced the number of hereditary peers to 92 members. This was seen as a significant amendment but academics claim a greater change is needed to establish a more democratic and effective body (Seidle, 2003). Brazier argues the House of Lordscontinues to be unelected, unrepresentative and unaccountable (2008, p. 66). The current composition of the Lords consists of mostly appointed peers, known as life peers, whom are appointed by the Prime Minister. There are currently 707 life peers and 88 hereditary peers. Most importantly, the chamber includes only 26 bishops which remain the only elected members (Parliament UK (2015). This significant proportion suggests the necessity for reforming the composition of the Lords. This essay will assess the merits of switching to a fully elected House of Lords. I will use the elected U.S. Senate to assess whether a fully elected upper housewould be an effective reform. The Conservative Liberal Democrat coalition in 2010 agreed to bring forward proposals for a wholly or mainly elected upper chamber on the basis of proportional representation (Russell, 2013, p. 265). ... Furthermore, the wife (Helen, Elastigirl, Mrs. Incredible) is portrayed as being this occupied housewife and suburban mom who partakes in the usual chores and activities that would be expected of her, partly as a result of the stereotypical gender roles derived from popular culture. However, as she is known to acquire super powers herself, sort of allows for the distinction between the ideal traits that a women is commonly known to have, while embodying this abyss of qualities that highlight her typical traits in an atypical format. For example, whilst still remaining as the role of a mother, she does appear to posses the qualities of having strong leadership, being analytical, athletic, dominant, and self sufficient, all a while remaining feminine, sensitive, and compassionate. Of course, this is nothing short of what s being commonly seen today, but the reaction of it all would ve been seen as taboo many years back. Likewise, this particularly coincides with the blockbuster film Wonder Woman, a story about an Amazonian princess who is forced to depart from her homeland to search for and destroy the villainous God, Ares. • 29. The Two Main Causes Of The Mexican-American War Mexican American War While often thought of as a small and insignificant war fought by the Americans, the Mexican American War serves a lot of importance to the foundation and history of our country. This war determined whether or not the United States would become a dominant power on the continent and it, more importantly, established the size of the nation. The Mexican American War lasted from 1846 1848, but by the time President James Polk took office in 1845, United States Mexico relations were already off to a bad start. While the Mexican American War was mainly caused by the idea of Manifest Destiny and the Texas War for Independence/Annexation, it was also a major turning point in the debate over slavery in the United States because of the Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, and the Wilmot Proviso. The two main causes for the war were the American s obsession with the concept and maintenance of Manifest Destiny and, the second cause was, the Texas War for Independence/Annexation. Manifest Destiny is, basically, the belief that the United States had a God given right to occupy and civilize the whole continent. With more Americans looking for land to occupy westward due to the fact that there wasn t enough space on the east coast, the fact that most of those areas were occupied didn t matter. Instead, an attitude that English speaking American would do a better job of taking care of the lands than Native Americans of Spanish Speaking Mexicans ruled the minds ... TREATING INFORMATION PRIVACY DEFICIENCIES IN CYBERSPACE Introduction Scholars are divided on the fundamental question of the Federal Trade Commission s (FTC) adjudicative capacity under the FTC Act. The FTC uses a reasonableness standard and considers each company s data security practices on a case by case basis. For more than a decade, the FTC s enforcement of data security actions invoked under В§5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act (FTC Act) resulted in consent decrees and settlements, subsequently scrutinized by practitioners as carrying as much precedential value as judicial opinions. In 2015, the Third Circuit Court Appeals decision in Wyndham reinforced the FTC s authority to pursue enforcement actions against companies that do not have reasonable data security practices. Notwithstanding a motion to dismiss arguing that, inter alia, (1) the FTC lacks authority to regulate under В§5 of the FTC Act and (2) the FTC failed to provide fair notice and of what constitutes reasonable data security standards and (3) В§5 does not govern the security of payment card data; Wyndham marked the first time federal courts held that the FTC has authority under В§5 of the FTC Act to enforce data security practices. Many of these acts of disobeying authority are demonstrated, in both Ancient Greek times and current times, as Gods break rules based off their wants or based off of their desire to help others, as many rulers use their power to violate rules in order to better their people, and as many every day individuals commit crimes and are forgiven for them. It is desired and acceptable, according to Ancient Greek beliefs and values, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the Battle of Marathon in Ancient Greek times that resulted from the Persians challenging the boundaries and laws put in place by Persian and Greek rulers, not only did Greek undergo conflicts with the Persians, but issues were also present regarding the actions of Greek rulers. Callimachus and Miltiades, the two Greek commanders at the time chose to have their men fight in this war. This could be viewed as wrong, due to the fact that these men were forced break moral laws by killing and also had the chance of dying themselves; yet the decision to participate in war and send men to die and to kill was considered acceptable because it would likely result in a better outcome for Greece. When the day was over, the Greeks had won one of history s most famous victories. (Battle of Marathon: Greeks Versus the Persians) The Grecians did win, proving that this war was the best choice for Greece, which would continue the justification for the challenging of these rules. Many Grecians broke the code of society that says it is not right to harm or kill others when they claimed to have killed about 6,400 Persians. (Battle of Marathon: Greeks Versus the Persians) Although this is an outrageous amount of deaths, the war and the challenging of rules caused by decisions Callimachus and Miltiades made to send their men to die and to challenge rules themselves by killing others was considered acceptable because it lead to the best outcome. This idea has influenced society today due to the fact that kings, presidents, or other rulers have the authority to break rules simply because they are in control. Both the Grecians and current day individuals convey the message that it is acceptable for those in charge to go against the rules of society. • 42. The Musculoskeletal System Of The Human Body Not only are there damages to the immune system of the human body, but the musculoskeletal system is also at a very large risk for injury, even from the seat of a chair. German Researcher, T. Hettinger, analyzed statistics on sick leave and found that musculoskeletal problems among administrative workers were higher than in any other industrial sector, and similar to those in construction, metal industry and transport (Cranz, 2000, p. 98). This is saying that people who are working office jobs, which mainly comprise of sittingfor extended periods of time compared to industrial jobs (heavy labor), consist of a similar amount of people taking sick days due to injuries to their muscular system. It was revealed in the 6 month follow up period that fall rates were nearly 4 fold higher in the American than in the Japanese residents (Lipsitz et al., 1994, p. 957). This shows the negative effect that sitting has on human behavior cross culturally by comparing the lifestyles of societies whose people are deskbound to ones that are not. When cultures such as the Japanese perform tasks such as squatting to use the toilet, or to stand up from a bed that is on the floor (not elevated) requires a full range of motion. This full range of motion is lost when humans sit in an unnatural state for a majority of their day, and makes aging an accelerated process. It s known that sitting and rising from the floor is a basic functional process integrated into all human movement patters, and when one loses the ability to perform this action, they lose their livelihood. Performing this action requires proper posture, flexibility and muscle strength, which are all weakened by being deskbound and the sedentary lifestyle. A Brazilian study created a sitting to rising test (SRT) to judge whether or not functional capabilities, such as getting up off the floor with little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Founders Day The Track Reflection On September 15th, one of my first few days at Townsend Harris, I came to English 1 during Band 7 and when I sat down to look at the board, my first reaction was to be confused. Founders Day: The Track Project wasn t a phrase I d heard of from any friends or upperclassmen. After going through a lesson about the Flushing Remonstrance and it s relations to the rivalry between Townsend Harris and Peter Stuyvesant, I was reluctant to hear about the project. Of these four options, I figured I wouldn t have the resources or the time to complete the film track (which would likely have to be done outside of school with a camera) and figured journalism... I found that students at Townsend Harris work hard and get schoolwork done. At my old school, group projects were always a real pain because I would always end up doing all of the work. Body cameras have been adopted by many agencies and I feel that they will not be going away unless a new technology replaces the system in place. The new technology in the criminal justice field that could be adopted by law enforcement agencies is the way for officers to run facial recognition on individuals on their patrol. This facial recognition could be developed in a variety of ways from running software in the car on people who pass the vehicle. Another way that this software could be implemented is through the use of goggles or glasses much like an augmented reality headset. This can create a realtime way for officers to identify individuals to see if the have a BOLO or have an outstanding warrant. Facial recognition would have to take great leaps to make it a practical way for officers to identify suspects. This software could be used on a lower scale and officers could use a camera to run the persons face through a variety of databases to identify an individual who may be lying about their name.
