Bartleby, The Scrivener, By Melville
Melville s short story Bartleby, the Scrivener describes the narrator as an elderly old man that wishes
to give details of the life of Bartleby the scrivener. Bartleby was a complete motionless human being
who refuses to interact with the world around him. These actions shape the short story, picking at the
viewer s mind as to why Bartleby is disconnected from society. Bartleby worked in the dead letter
office; therefore this may have triggered his inability to relate to the world around him. This
motionless docility covered his inner troubles that he withheld from the world. The narrator states I
have known very many of them, professionally and privately, and if I pleased, could relate divers
histories, at which good natured gentlemen might smile, and sentimental souls might weep (Melville).
In this statement he means that many persons might choose to smile as they find pleasure in reading
Bartleby as much as those who might weep because they find the short story to be discouraging. In the
1970 s adaptation of this short story, the narrator is one of those sentimental souls who weeps for
Bartleby. However, as the narrator eventually becomes speechless to Bartleby preferring not to do his
work, he also brings to life the humor of Bartleby s story. Unlike the sympathetic and sometimes
humorous narration of the short story and 1970 adaptation, the 2001 adaptation of Bartleby s story
presents Bartleby as a terrifying and strange man. In Melville s short story

Social Disorganization Theory On Urban Ecology And Burgess...
Social Disorganization
Nicole Hofmann
Criminological Theory University of Tampa Abstract
Social Disorganization theory has its roots in urban ecology and Burgess s concentric model. As part
of the positivist paradigm of criminology, it poses a scientific examination of the connection of social
disorganization and crime mediated by structural factors. The macro level research concludes that a
weakening of social bonds between an individual and institutions of socialization will lead to
delinquency. Over time, there has been much empirical support for the theory and extensions have
been made to include more reliable measures of social disorganization within a community. This paper
will discuss the origins of the theory developed by Shaw and McKay, then move forward to prominent
empirical support, social disorganization research on suburban areas and lead up to valid criticism of
the theory. Finally, there will be an examination of the policy implications originally posed and a
proposal towards a more integrated approach addressing causes for social disorganization through the
critical paradigm of criminology.
Introduction
Social disorganization theory is part of the positivist paradigm of criminology, a scientific approach to
crime causes, and part of the Chicago School of crime. While trait theories under the positivist
approach assume that crime is cause by internal factors, social disorganization theory relies on the
assumption that crime is caused by environmental

The Punctuated Equilibrium Theory Has Had Much More...
NARRATOR: We begin our night at the Witte family dinner table. All the guests have finally arrived
and fresh bread rolls complete with garlic butter have been served to everyone. At one end of the fairly
large table, Gould and Lyell begin to have a heated conversation.
LYELL: *Clears throat* Ah, excuse me, Mr. Gould, but for your new theory, have you been
successfully able to find any support for it?
GOULD: Why, yes, of course Mr. Lyell. The punctuated equilibrium theory has had much more
support than the gradualism in the fossil record.
LYELL: Oh, really? If you would so kindly elaborate on this, it would be much appreciated.
GOULD: Certainly, Mr. Lyell. Well, I have found several specimens at one stage, and several at
another instead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
LYELL: Well, do you have any support other than just the fossils?
GOULD: Why yes, my good sir. Evolution is driven by the changing environment. If the environment
or climate changes, then it will kill off the individuals of the species with unfavorable traits to survive
in the new conditions. That is nothing new, it s here proven in Mr. Darwin s theory; you should be
well aware of it. Well, the environment does not change gradually, and therefore, I believe my good
Sir, that animals don t change gradually.
LYELL: But it is clear *interrupted by Mendel*
MENDEL: Gentlemen, I am so sorry to break up this wonderful discussion, but I really was listening
intently out of interest in it, but the butter seems to have gone around to your side of the table, and I
cannot quite reach it. Would you be so kind and pass it to me?
SCENE 2
NARRATOR: As the task of passing the butter is completed, the conversation soon turns to Mendel,
as Wade asks him more about the modern world.
WADE: So, Mr. Mendel, how do you like our modern world?
MENDEL: Ah, well everything has changed in this world. I am becoming very lost, very quickly.
WADE: Well, you know, not everything is changing. Actually, your discoveries on genetics are still
valid today.
MENDEL: Well, thats one thing.
WADE: Did you know even Mr. Linnaeus s taxonomy is around, and that was a century before you.

Emergency Room write up My day in the E.R. was slow for the first hour and a half. We got our first
patient at 7:57 am, and it went at a brisk pace for the rest of the day. The first patient came in with
sinus tachycardia. She received one liter of NS 0.9% at a rate of 1L/hr. and two doses of IV diltiazem
10 mg each to cardiovert her, and it was successful. She was released home with instructions to follow
up with her cardiologist. There were two patients with chest pain one patient received Nitro
Sublingual tablets x3, and the other received Nitro Paste one inch on the left side of his chest.
Troponin labs CMP, and CBC on both patients were within normal range. The urine culture on the
patient who received the Nitro tabs had WBC in it. When I left the nurse was waiting for blood

Espada s Comparison Of Coca-Cola To Potion
After being much pressured from his family, the boy has no choice other than to drink the potion,
familiar / from soda fountains in Brooklyn (12 13). From the boy s perspective, we can clearly see his
emotional dissatisfaction as he states, he was bored with this potion (12). Espada s comparison of
Coca Cola to potion suggests that the people of Puerto Rico are deeply mesmerized by American
products, and that they are incapable of recognizing the copious amounts of goods that Puerto Rico
has to offer to its people. The speaker emphasizes the significance of American culture on the Puerto
Rican citizens and outstandingly illustrates the influences and effects of Americanization. These
effects are clearly evident even with the older generation

Technology Is A Helpful Tool For Teaching The Writing Process
Technology is a helpful tool for teaching the writing process, and Marchisan and Alber (2001)
concluded that writers can be taught to write using the writing process approach paired with tools of
technology, direct instruction, and committed well trained teachers. Graham, (2008), Graham and
Perin (2007a), and Rogers and Graham, (2008), agreed that technology makes the process of writing
easier and often provides very specific types of support. Word processing provides at least four
advantages: (a) revisions are easily made, (b) publishing is professional looking, (c) typing provides
an easier means for children with fine motor skill challenges to produce text, and (d) word processing
programs have software programs, such as spell and stylistic checkers designed to reduce specific
types of miscues. Other tools are speech synthesis (i.e., the writer s spoken words are transcribed to
electronic text) and word prediction programs (i.e., the computer program reduces the key strokes by
predicting the writer s next word). This is helpful for students with difficulties with spelling and the
mechanics of writing. In addition, outlining and semantic mapping software can aide with the
planning process, and the use of computer networks and the Internet can help to promote
communication and collaboration among writers.
Students prefer technology based assignments and are found to use more words and an expanded
vocabulary when expressing themselves in blog posts (Berezina, 2011;

Wood Thrush
The data from the harvested stand and unharvested stand shows that wood thrush would likely be able
to find a suitable breeding, nesting, and foraging habitat in this section of the Vermont National Forest
(Table 1), particularly in the unharvested stand, though improved management practices could make
the harvested stand more suitable. Wood thrush commonly hide their nests under leaves in a shady
area in the midstory level, so it is important to have vertically and horizontally diverse stands
(Hagenbauch et al. 2011 a). The unharvested stand provides higher quality nesting and breeding areas
due to the higher density of stems in the midstory and canopy and greater canopy closer (Table 1).

Results are expected to vary due to site characteristics and management histories (Hoover et al. 2012),
and in this case, invasive species and harvesting in the past century could have contributed to our
estimate being lower than the regional estimate of 116 Mg C/ha. Invasive species can affect forest
health, regeneration, and forest structure, so invasive species could have crowded out live trees,
decreasing the above ground live tree carbon pool. The unharvested stand has not been cut in the past
three decades so this factor should not affect the above ground carbon pool significantly, though it has
likely been harvested more than the old growth forest stands sampled in Hoover et al. (2012) because
there was no evidence of harvesting in those stands. Species composition of the unharvested stand
could have contributed to our estimate for the above ground live tree carbon pool being slightly higher
than the estimate from Smith et al. (2004). Our unharvested stand was mainly made up of sugar maple
and beech trees (Figure 2.), and these two species contain more carbon than birch (Jenkins et al.
2003). For the harvested stand with 61.18 Mg C/ha, our estimate of the above ground live tree carbon
pool was respectively

Revenge In The Cask Of Amontillado
Edgar Allan Poe is an American author famously known for short stories of mystery and horror. One
of the many short stories that Edgar Allan Poe is known for is The Cask of Amontillado. This short
story is about Montressor s seek of revenge to Fortunato who had hurt him a thousand times and
learned that Fortunato laughed at his proud name, Montressor, the name of an old and honored family
(Poe). Montressor devises a plan of revenge by using Fortunato s great weakness; he liked to drink
good wine, indeed he drank much of it (Poe). One evening during the carnival season, Montressor
meets Fortunato on the street alone drunk and celebrating the carnival season in a motley a traditional
custom of the court jester, a fool, or a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Montressor also indicates himself too as person with high status by ending his statement with as once I
was. In Critical Companion to Edgar Allan Poe: A Literary Reference to His Life and Work by Dawn
B. Sova, views the significance of the conflict between the Roman Catholic Montressor and the
Mason Fortunato as one of the Church defending against it enemies (42). While Sova defines it as
political and religious conflict as the root for revenge, I believe that this is just a conflict between two
rich men of great arrogance who had their feelings hurt and wanted to use family power for revenge
because two people of a political and religious conflict does not simply go into each other s house and
start drinking together. Montressor continues to express his care and insist that they should go back.
He explains to Fortunato that he will be ill, and cannot be responsible (Poe). This verbal irony
describes Montressor s view towards revenge of not only punish but punish with impunity because he
wants to have his murderous revenge without any consequences. Fortunato foolishly replies:
Enough,
The cough s a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough.
True true, I replied; and indeed, I had no intentions of alarming you unnecessarily but you should use
all proper caution. (Poe)

Generation of electricity:
Nuclear Energy
A report for Zebra Tech
Abstract
This report reviews energy sources of the world traditionally used to generate electricity, namely
renewable and non renewable sources, giving a brief overview of each of the 6 methods and how they
generate electricity, and evaluates the suitability of each by weighing up their advantages and
disadvantages. It introduces nuclear energy and gives a detailed description of the setup and process
whereby electricity is produced from nuclear energy. By weighing up a broad spectrum of advantages
and disadvantages of using nuclear energy, specifically various costs, risks and efficiency, in
comparison to traditional generation methods, the report determines that nuclear energy is indeed
suitable to use throughout the world.

2.1.1. Wind energy
A popular renewable energy source is wind energy, used globally. Kinetic energy in the form of wind
turns large turbines, which the convert this energy into mechanical energy, or electricity, as it supplies

Probability Of A Sequence Of Rational Numbers
Abstract Bernoulli numbers evaluate the probability of a sequence of rational numbers. They re found
commonly within many types of mathematics: Number Theory, Euler Maclaurin summation, and
power series are some exampled. Once Bernoulli s ideas were published, it gave flight to many
mathematicians in the field of probability. You can consider Jakob Bernoulli as the founding father of
probability. What can become of me if I fail this class? Or what will become of me if I have to drop
the course. Do you have utile scanner. Introduction The Bernoulli family is the most prominent family
in the mathematical world; the name Bernoulli belonged to six mathematicians at the end of the 17th
and the beginning of the 18th centuries. Bernoulli numbers first appeared in 1713 in Ars Conjectandi
[page 97] written by Jakob Bernoulli(1654 1705). With the publication of Ars Conjectandi, the
development of probability was brought about; it is considered the founding idea of probability.
Bernoulli worked for many years on his book, although his work was incomplete it made headway
once it was published regarding the use of rational numbers in a sequence regarding trigonometry
functions. Bernoulli contracted tuberculosis and passed away before he was able to complete the book,
family members published his work several years after his death. Ars Conjectandi consisted mainly of
material regarding probability theory and expected values. The art of conjectandi (in English
translation) was meant

The Greed of Music Industry Executives and Declining Record Sales
The music recording industry is in trouble. For several years now, sales of new and popular music
have steadily declined and show no sign of changing. The record companies are quick to blame the
growing popularity of the Internet; music is being traded in a digital form online, often anonymously,
with the use of file sharing programs such as Morpheus, KaZaA, and Imesh, to name a few. The RIAA
(Recording Industry Association of America) succeeded in disbanding the pioneer Internet file sharing
program, Napster, but is facing confrontation with similar programs that are escaping American
copyright laws. While there is an obvious connection between declining popular music ... Show more

Even sales figures for singles are down. Sales are off by 63.9%...6.7 million units were sold in the first
six months of 2002 vs. 18.6 million unites in the same period in 2001 (Garrity).
Not only are the companies themselves facing hard times, but the retail stores that sell music are also
suffering their own losses. Musicland Stores, the largest music retailer in the U.S. continues to report
losses and declining sales...For the third quarter, the Minnetonka, Minn. based company reports a new
loss of $16.1 million, compared with a loss last year of $144.6 million (Jeffrey). The company was
even forced to close some of its stores. At quarter s end, Musicland operated 1476 stores...During the

On Cue store, the only place to buy entertainment products like CDs and audiocassettes, was forced to
close because of insufficient revenues. Inhabitants of Vermillion are now forced to travel anywhere
from 30 to 60 miles away to purchase music offline. While this town obviously reflects a very small
percentage of consumers, the lack of immediately available music products certainly will not help the
declining record sales.

Analysis Of The Movie The Verdict Essay
In the film The Verdict, the opposing attorneys could not be any more different in their approaches to
the case. The medical malpractice suit involves a young woman left comatose after childbirth. She
was given anesthetics for the operation, after which she began to choke on her own vomit and became

each attorney s journey to the final verdict, rather the case itself. Frank Galvin, a hard boozing, has

attorney, Ed Concannon, defends the doctors of the Catholic hospital. Each lawyer differentiates
himself with distinct tactics, philosophy, as well as personal style. Frank Galvin s personal style can
really be described in two words: pure chaos. How the character can survive in the world, let alone be
an attorney is a true mystery. Once a top graduate and a part of a prestigious Boston law firm, Frank is
now barely holding onto to his one and only client in his own firm. The film opens with Frank
drinking and wasting his time away on a pinball machine. As the film progresses, Frank is continually

that are consistent is Frank s life; his behavior is erratic and impulsive throughout the entire movie. He

Abstract
This article seeks to find which of the macroeconomic variables among FDI inflow, current account
balance, inflation and interest rate play a significant role in economic growth in Malaysia using the

In fact, FDI is said to be the most important contributing factor for Malaysia s economic performance.
The early beginnings of luring foreign investors to Malaysian soil started with the introduction of the
Investment Incentives Act 1968, and followed by the establishment of the Free Trade Zones (FTZs)
during the Second Malaysia Plan (1971 75). Since then, Malaysia has attracted a large portion of the
investment dollar that flowed into Asia. In 1995, for example, Malaysia was the second largest FDI
recipient among Asian economies at US$ 5.8 billion.
Malaysia recorded inward FDI of USD 7.3 billion and USD 6.3 billion in 1996 and 1997 respectively.
The lower figures in 1997 may be attributed to the lack of confidence as a result of the Asian financial
crisis but by 1998, figures indicate that investor confidence had improved. Malaysia s highest FDI
inflow was recorded in 2007 when the amount surged to USD 8.4 billion from USD 6.0 billion in
2006.
FDIs are private sector investments that are made by a company into a foreign country. Foreign direct
investments create a strong demand for a local currency and help boost the economy. With money
coming into a country, strong foreign direct investment is one way governments can finance current
account deficits. However, just as funds flow in, they also can flow out,

Pestel and Porter s Analysis of Tourism Industry

Introduction:
This paper will be dynamically examining the tourism industry during the 2000s. It will begin by
using the PESTEL framework to analyse the macro environment and determine which factors drive
the competitive forces within the industry. Following this, Porter s Five Forces model will be used to
analyse the actual competitive forces at work within the industry and determine the relative
importance of these forces.
The macro environment

It also allows more bookings to be made simultaneously, which will make it possible for airlines to
process more bookings more quickly.
From an environmental perspective, it is apparent that the world is starting to realise that increases in
tourism are having a negative impact on the environment. This is due to increases in energy
consumption, which in turn heightens the effects of global warming (Neto, 2002). There are many
controls that governments are trying to put into place, such as flight rationing (Liverpool Business
School, 2009). However, it can be argued that these have not really begun to have a significant effect
on tourism, as they are still insufficient to dampen demand. It may become a problem in future years,
as the number of controls is likely to increase. Perhaps the largest environmental factor would be
natural disasters, like Hurricane Katrina (Cashell, 2005) and the tsunami that hit Asia in December
2004 (Birkland, 2006). These will impact negatively on people s confidence in visiting places that
have been hit severely by such disasters.
As can be seen, the macro environment has had a significant impact on the tourism industry during the
2000s. The key factors affecting tourism negatively would be the political, social and

HIPAA VIALATION
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 made it illegal to gain
access to personal medical information for any reasons other than health care delivery, operations, and
reimbursements (Shi ump; Singh, 2008, p. 166). HIPAA legislation mandated strict controls on the
transfer of personally identifiable health data between two entities, provisions for disclosure of
protected information, and criminal penalties for violation (Clayton 2001). HIPAA also has privacy
requirements that govern disclosure of patient protected health information (PHI) placed in the
medical record by physicians, nurses, and other health care providers (Buck, 2011). Always remember

Single payer health plan places the financing with one entity usually the government. One major
advantage of this system is that all Americans and lawful residents would be entitled to benefits
regardless of individual or family income (Shi ump; Singh, 2008, p. 572). Private insurance plans and
government entitlement programs (Medicaid, Medicare, Tricare, and the Federal Employee Health
Benefits Program) would no longer be necessary under a single payer system, although the for some
private insurance will remain for those desiring coverage beyond what a basic government plan might
offer (Shi ump; Singh, 2008, p. 572). Health care providers would be reimbursed on a fee for service
scale (Shi ump; Singh, 2008, p. 572). Hospitals, nursing homes, and other institutional facilities would
be given an annual prospective budget to provide all required care (Shi ump; Singh, 2008, p. 572).
Single payer system has to offer two things that are important are having coverage for all individuals
in the United States and the money spent on health care was budgeted. There is other ways that have
been tried or discussed and they would be piecemeal, managed competition, play or pay, and
employee mandate, although those do not necessarily provide coverage to all individuals. There are
down sides to a universal plan that would be change,

Eliee Character Quotes In Night
In the book Night, Elie s character trait changes throughout the book. This is mainly caused by the
things happening to him and other Jews. This changes changes him into a completely new person with
new believes and views about the world. Over the course of the book, Elie changes from a person who
believes in good and that God is fair to someone who is bitter, angry at his God, and only thinks about
surviving. This is important to the book as a whole because it connects to his central character trait
and how it changed throughout the book. The change is apparent when he was angry at his God for
not preventing the barbick actions of the Germans, when he talks about how men were stronger than
God, and when his father died he couldn t think of anything but how to survive.
At the start of the book Elie was an innocent kid that only wanted to learn new things and dedicated
himself to his God and family. Elie became friends with a foreign Jew that lived in his town name
Moshe the Beadle. Elie started to ask questions that he didn t normally ask when one day Moshe asked
him why did he pray, Why did I pray? Why did I live? Why did I breathe? (Page 4) This moment

Now all he can think about is how to survive, I spend my days in total idleness. With only one desire:
to eat. I no longer thought of my father, or my mother. This shows that Elie is only thinking about
getting his next meal and he didn t want or let the thought of his family into his mind, or even the
thought to pray to his God to give him strength as well as thanking his God for the food he got
because his constant need to eat to be able to survive was all he thought and dreamed about. The
reader can infer that Elie no longer thought of his past at this point or about who he used to be, which
supports the argument that Elie s condition at this moment and what had happened to him had changed
his central character

Natural Selection
Part B.
Over the millions of years organisms have been present on earth, there has been many forms of
evidence to suggest animals are evolving through natural selection. However, the question still
remains as to whether homo sapiens are still evolving through natural selection. Through the nature of
science being subject to change and many new discoveries being made each day, it is difficult to make
clear confined theories and conclusions, which will not be impacted on in the future.

The main idea which discredits and contradicts evolution involves the idea that evolution proceeds by
random chance. However in Australia and among homo sapiens the only evidence to support the idea
that evolution is occurring are as a result of an organism evolving in order to adapt to the changing
environmental conditions of Australia.
Slide 23:
In conclusion, there are many different forms of evidence to support the idea of evolution by natural
selection among homo sapiens in Australia. With reference to the scientific theories and information
present today, it becomes obvious that homo sapiens in Australia are still evolving and will continue to
over time in order to cope with and adapt to environmental changes.
In the words of Sir Charles Darwin, It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most
intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.

Abraham Lincolns did not support the idea of slavery. Abraham Lincoln believed that it the idea of
slavery was not morally correct. Although, Abraham Lincoln did want slavery to be put to an end he
was not an abolitionist. Abraham Lincoln was against slavery but he did not support the quality
between a white man and a black man. Abraham Lincoln was able to make his thoughts extremely
clearly during one of his debates he had at Charleston, Illinois, in September 18th in 1853 (Pruitt 3).
Abraham Lincoln was accused of being for negro equality by U.S Senate, Stephen Douglas. Abraham
quickly defended himself to the accusation that was brought up to him saying. I will say then that I am
not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the
white and black races . Abraham Lincoln than started to discuss about how he did not truly believe

Assignment #3 Option 2 The Human Genome Project
Tuesday November 17, 2015
What makes one person differ from the other? Is it physical appearance, personality or mentality?
These three factors separate each individual from one another and it is what makes them different.
Physical appearance, personality and mentality are made up from the same building blocks which are
known as DNA sequences. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), is a self replicating material that is found
throughout every living organism. It s a large macromolecule that transforms characteristics into life.
DNA is made up two strands that run in opposite directions therefore they are known to be
antiparallel. The lagging strand runs in the 5 3 direction while the leading strand run s in the 3 5
direction (International Baccalaureate Organization, 2009). There s a phosphate group attached by a
covalent bond to the carbon atom which is covalently attached to a nucleotide base. The two DNA
strands are attached to each other by hydrogen bonds. There are two hydrogen bonds found between
Thymine and Cytosine and three hydrogen bonds found between Guanine and cytosine (International
Baccalaureate Organization, 2009). Many studies have been done in order to gather information about
the human DNA. The sequence of base paring in DNA was determined by The Human Genome
project (International Baccalaureate Organization, 2009).

Core Concepts Of Quality And Associated Academic Theory
The history of quality movement can be traced back to medieval Europe (American Society for
Quality , 2016) but fundamental quality processes and practices came into effect in the early 20th
century. In the 1920 s statistical theory began to be applied effectively to quality control and by the
1950 s quality management practices were developing rapidly in Japan s manufacturing market,
becoming fully embedded in industry in Europe and the USA by the 1980 s (Department of Trade and
Industry, n.d.). But what is quality? Although there are many re occurring themes, quality means

But is a little vague, this could relate to a number of characteristics for example reliability and cost
when in relation to products, or accessibility and efficiency in relation to the services sector. The
Chartered Quality Institute believes quality is about making organisations perform for their
stakeholders from improving products, services, systems and processes, to making sure that the whole
organisation is fit and effective (Chartered Quality Institute, 2016) This definition of quality is specific
and up to date with today s requirements of the application of quality. This definition demonstrates
Feigenbaum s (1961) idea that quality is from the cradle to the grave and also addresses stakeholders.
This could be the customer of a product, or client of a service for example a patient in a hospital.
Comparatively this definition of quality is more rounded than the ISO and Dictionary definitions and
encompasses the idea of satisfying the customer and constant improvement. Constant improvement
and customer satisfaction is a common theme within the principles of many philosophers of quality.
The contribution of quality innovators have made contemporary quality what it is today by developing
and deploying new frameworks and techniques. (Rose, 2005). One of the earliest pioneers of quality
was Dr. William Edwards Deming. Deming, born in 1900, was an eminent scholar and teacher in
American academia and was considered by many to be the master of continual

Femininity And Womanhood In The Poisonwood Bible
The Poisonwood Bible written by Barbara Kingsolver goes over a variety of topics which raise
curiosity to readers. As time progresses, readers grow their understanding of the different themes and
perspectives in each book. However, the theme of Femininity and Womanhood stands out to me since
the beginning, as it expresses major differences with men and women. Femininity experiences
continuities and changes throughout time. Even back when we were young...when he regaled her with
words and worse, for curtains unclosed or slips showing (68). The daughters of the Price family
encounter a cultural shock of womanhood when they arrive to Africa. In such places like Africa,
exposing a part of your body and not protecting it counts as a sin of womanhood. However, females in
other regions like America are able to wear whatever they decide on. America and Africa, two
countries with completely different lifestyles, expresses the contrast between a developing and a
declining nation. After settling into their new home, Congo, Orleanna Price slowly begins to think of
how her husband identifies her. Her husband, Nathan Price, impacts her feeling like his instrument, his
animal. Nothing more (89). Not only does she undergoes this type of perplexed thought of her
womanhood, but she also notices that the Congo women feel as an object by their husbands. Even
today s society, women are still affected by the intimidation of male power such as their interaction
with others or

The Social Labeling Theory
Crime Theory
The Social Labeling Theory
The social labeling theory infers that descriptive classifications may at times define an individual s
behavior or self identity. The theory closely relates to stereotyping or self fulfilling prophecies. The
theory of social labeling explains why defiant individuals engage in activities that go against cultural
or societal norms (Crossman, 2014). Though popular in the early 1970s, theorists have redefined the
theory trying to avail assertions that conform to the present social formations. The labeling theory
relies on unwanted descriptors including defiance, mental disorder diagnosis, or disability while trying
to explain non conformance to prevalent stipulations or societal requirements. Stigma is an example of
a social label that redefines an individual s identity and concept in society.
The Theory of Reintegrative Shaming
The reintegrative shaming theory remains common practice in the numerous criminal justice systems
around the world. Through the reintegrative theory, the justice system sought to create a long lasting
bond between offenders and the society. John Braithwaite designed and formulated the reintegrative
shaming theory seeking to avail a feasible alternative to the social labeling theory (Zhang, 2004). In
his theory, John indicated two types of reintegrative processes that include a reintegrative and
stigmatic shaming. While the stigmatic shaming intends to disintegrate the social tie between the
offender and community,

Essay on Eliminating the National Endowment for the Arts
The National Endowment for the Arts is an independent agency of the federal government specifically
designed to support and enhances the art community for minority groups. The NEA was founded in
1965 and has controlled the art community ever since. This has aided in censoring works of
supposedly obscene and controversial art. The elimination of the NEA, or making it a private
organization, would free much needed public tax dollars to go to more important parts of the nations
budgets, as well as open the art communities up for the freedom to exhibit the controversial pieces of
art work the NEA deems inappropriate.

Marion was given the rank of first lieutenant in Captain William Moultrie s company of infantry.
In June, Grant led his expedition on the same route Montgomerie had taken. Sensing another ambush
at a pass near the site of Montgomerie s battle, Grant dispatched Marion with 30 men to flush out the
Cherokees. Using trees for cover, Marion s detachment cautiously advanced within range of the
Cherokees, whereupon the Indians sounded their war cry and fired. By the time the pass was secured,
only nine of Marion s men were left. Grant s column proceeded through the pass and engaged the
Cherokees for several hours, until the Indians fled. Marion s capture of the pass allowed Grant to
create a path of destruction in the Cherokee lands, burning 15 Indian towns and destroying their corn
crops. Finally, Chief Attakullakulla, known by some as Little Carpenter, surrendered.
Marion s courageous efforts in the Cherokee War did not go unnoticed. When he returned to his old
lifestyle by leasing farm lands along the west bank of the Santee River, he was accorded great respect
and became a successful planter. Although he spent considerable time hunting and fishing, he was well
acquainted with details of the surrounding lands. He also had an active social life and regularly visited
his brothers and neighboring Huguenot families. During this prosperous time, he attained a sizable
degree of wealth. In 1773,

Economic Value Of The Good Life
The difference between back then and the society we live in today, is that there are now many things
that money can actually buy. By exploring the Good Life, the topic of economic value comes to mind
and the question that permeates is if that thing should or should not have an economic value. It is
crazy to think about some of the things that people charge others that do not have any real
significance. For instance, Michael Sandel pointed how in some cities, non violent offenders can pay
ninety dollars a night for a prison cell upgrade. That is an example to me that seems very pointless
because if a person is a criminal why should his or hers economic status put them to a greater
advantage than anybody else in that prison. Drawing from the content from this week s readings I
believe that certain things should contain more economic value than other. For instance things like the
internet, adoptions, health care, education, and parking are things to me that have economic value, but
really shouldn t. On the contrary, things that should have economic value are things like the
preservation of the environment, museums, and recreational and national parks.
Things that I believe should not have such an economic value are things that to me seem essential to
an individual s life. One thing that has monetary value and really shouldn t in my opinion is wifi.
Paying for wifi is something that gets me furious because I truly believe that there should be free wifi

Outline Discuss the Function of Families in Contemporary...
Outline discuss the function of families in contemporary UK society
The definition of the term family has somewhat gone through radical changes over the past few
decades in the UK, some 30 years ago a family was defined as being father, mother and children.
Some referred to this as the cereal box family as this was typically the type of family to be shown on
television commercials for cereal. This stereotype is more correctly known as the nuclear family,
however changes over the years has meant that this nuclear family is no longer a typical family type
within the UK. This has proven difficult for sociologists to provide a clear definition or generalisation
of the term family and such difficulties will be explored throughout ... Show more content on

The Marxist viewpoint on the family revolves around a capitalist society and believes that the nuclear
family is not a functionally necessary institution, although it is probably the best suited. However,
Marxists believe that the family bases itself upon private property and profit, whereby men marry and
then have children to pass on their profit to and women simply marry the men for financial security.
Together, Marxist feminists also revolve their viewpoint around a capitalist society but focus more on
the woman s role, rather than heirs and profit. They believe that the woman s primary role is based
within the home and therefore can be exploited as a source of cheap labour because she is dependant
on that of her husband s income. The woman, they believe, is a housewife doing home chores to
increase the father s ability to work and thus delivering more to society. Also, by nurturing and
teaching their children to become the next viable source of workers in the future, the woman is
helping society and saving on capitalisation costs. This therefore lays a foundation for their children to
be obedient later in life, punctual and altogether submit to their boss in later life, without the need for
society training these conformities, thus having cost nothing to the capitalist.
Other reasons suggest that the nuclear family is no longer suited or even the most frequent

Annotated Bibliography On Multimedia Security
Multimedia security is ever demanding area of research covering different aspects of electrical
engineering and computer science. In this chapter, our main focus is encryption of JPEG2000
compatible images. Though both stream and block cipher have been investigated in the literature, but
this chapter provides a detailed study of block cipher as applied to images, since JPEG2000 generates
various subband sizes as blocks. In the first section, we briefly define various encryption components
like wavelet transform, bit plane decomposition, XOR operation, artificial neural network, seed key
generator and chaotic map functions, for interest of the reader. Later in section 2, we present literature
review of various encryption techniques from two perspectives: applications to highlight scope of
research in this domain; and approaches to provide overall view of multimedia encryption. The section
three provides a new two layer encryption technique for JPEG2000 compatible images. The first step
provides a single layer of encryption using a neural network to generate a pseudo random sequence
with a 128 bit key, which XORs with bit planes obtained from image subbands to generate encrypted
sequences. The second step develops another layer of encryption using a cellular neural network with
a different 128 bit key to develop sequences with hyper chaotic behavior. These sequences XOR with
selected encrypted bit planes (obtained in step 1) to generate doubly encrypted bit planes. Finally,

The Cuban Descent
Cultural competence is a set of behaviors, attitudes, and policies, among professionals enabling them
to work competently in cross cultural events. It is the ability to provide care to patients with diverse
beliefs, behaviors, and values. This also involves meeting a patient s cultural, language, and social
needs. Health care related disparities, changing demographics and globalization make it important that
nurses are culturally competent in the workplace. To do this, nurses must be able to engage in cultural
self assessment, value diversity, and be culturally aware. Nurses must also understand and effectively
respond to cultural differences. As a culturally competent nurse, you will have a more effective
interaction with patients and families.
If a patient of Cuban descent is assigned, specific nursing considerations are needed such as
maintaining eye contact, using body language to help explain any teachings, making the family feel as
involved as possible, and keep in mind that the family s opinion is considered very important. One
characteristic of the Cuban culture that must be considered when providing culturally congruent care
is eye contact, body language, and talking in close proximity is very important when communicating.
A second characteristic is family is very important, the family s opinion is highly regarded. A third
characteristic is the females of the household are the caretakers, therefore, any information about a

Daniel Gilbert Reporting Live From Tomorrow Analysis

In Daniel Gilbert s Reporting Live from Tomorrow , Gilbert makes use of statistics, studies, and
experiments to convey a multitude of ideas, primarily the concept that while many people are opposed
to, or are in disbelief of it, turning to surrogates as means of predicting our own future is quite
effective. Gilbert s concepts and theories are quite important to take into consideration not only as a
general message of how human beings tend to let factors such as their imagination or their own self

surrogates, we are able to make more accurate predictions on our own future, such as what will be

when it comes to predicting our own future, especially in the case of those around us that may be

TRUST AND INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND
IDENTIFYING...
TRUST AND INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS When working in teams, is trust assumed or do
team members have to earn trust? As in all aspects in life involving people s trust is in no way just
given but obtained by earning it. Trust among individuals is dynamic and through similar experience it
is earned. Nevertheless, trust cannot be clarified exclusively through the interaction among
individuals, but also through incredibly private points of view. We are inclined to trust individuals who
we regard as trustable. The assessment about an individual s credibility or whether or not they can be
trusted is none the less still completely subjective. Through our own individual experiences,
background, stereotypes, and prejudices is how we look at an ... Show more content on

According to Msanjila and Afsarmanesh (2008), who proposed numerous resolutions for building
trust: focus on the what and not the how, define the parameter of operations, hold everyone
accountable and set some consequences. While involved in a team, individuals need to trust their
teammates in order to complete all tasks because getting the work done involves all members, which
in turn stresses cooperation and collaboration. The loss of trust will cause conflicts to arise and
members of the team will be unwilling to compromise, cooperate and agreements will never be
achieved which will jepardizes the tasks from being accomplished. If a team loses that trust it may
never truly be earned again and if it is, it takes an extraordinary amount of commitment and effort for
it to be regained. Keeping trust between individuals while working on a team, individuals must display
the expectation and standard set by the team. Each team member has to be accountable for their
actions, they need to be committed to the team and steer clear of excessively taking advantage of their
teammates. For example, deadlines will be set by the team for individual tasks according to a team
agreement; each individual needs to keep the promise to fulfill their assigned task on time as agreed. If
this does not happen, trust will possibly be lost since other members of the team are depending and
relying upon that individual s accomplishments. An additional instance

Mistakes In Into Thin Air
Mistakes That Lead to Tragedies and Precautions That Lead to Success
The best way to bring attention to a problem is tragedy. Unfortunately, this means reform will not
happen until the loss or harm of life has already occurred. One example of this was seen in New York,
the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. This fire was the cause of 146 deaths and many more injuries;
however, this lead to new law regulating work safety standards. While this is a tragedy that caused
reform in 1911, the same method of reform stands today. This can be seen in the novel, Into Thin Air
by Jon Krakauer. The novel is an account of what happened on the mountain during the 1996 Everest
expedition. While the expedition started off with high hopes and dreamers ready ... Show more

In order to continue climbing Everest, many aspects of climbing need to be improved before more
people endanger their lives to try and reach the roof of the world. The guides have some areas that
need the most reform. During the ascension of Everest the guides made a plethora mistakes that
seemed insignificant but only aided in disaster. The guides first mistake is allowing any bloody idiot
[with enough determination] up Everest (Krakauer 153). By allowing any bloody idiot with no
climbing experience to try and climb the most challenging mountain in the world, the guides are
almost inviting trouble. Having inexperienced climbers decreases the trust a climbing team has in one
another, causing an individual approach to climbing the mountain and more reliance on the guides.
While this approach appears fine, this fault is seen in addition to another in Scott Fischer s expedition
Mountain Madness. Due to the carefree manner in which the expedition was run, clients [moved] up
and down the mountain independently during the acclimation period, [Fischer] had to make a number
of hurried, unplanned excursions between Base Camp and the upper camps when several clients
experienced problems and needed to be escorted down, (154). Two problems present in the Mountain
Madness expedition were seen before the summit push: the allowance of inexperienced climbers and
an unplanned climbing regime. A third problem that aided disaster was the difference in opinion in
regards to the responsibilities of a guide on Everest. One guide went down alone many hours ahead of
the clients and went without supplemental oxygen (318). These three major issues: allowing anyone
up the mountain, not having a plan to climb Everest and differences in opinion. All contributed to the
disaster on Everest in

The Guidon Essay
The guidon, also referred to as the colours or the standard, is an important and time honored piece of
the military s history that is still observed and revered today. The guidon is thought to have originated
from ancient Egytptian times, where it was believed to have represented rulers and the armies they
commanded. The idea endured well into medieval European times as it was used to depict each
commanders specific coat of arms. This is so that each soldier could see through the dust and smoke
created from the battlefield where their particular regiment was located, so as not to be separated from
them. We still use guidons today, though maybe not for the same purpose or in the same situations,
mainly because of how advanced warfare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later, battle honors were added to the colours, which made them even more significant and were
revered even more by members of the regiment. The colours are never destroyed capriciously
anymore. When they get too old and worn out to be used or displayed as the uit standard, they are
moved to museums until they moulder into dust. However, in modern armies, if the colours are in
danger of being captured by the enemy, there are standing orders for them to be destroyed. It is for this
reason and the advent of modern weapons, and subsequent changes in tactics, colours are no longer
carried into battle. However, they are still used at formal events and ceremonies. The word guidon
derives from the Italian guidone meaning guide or marker and/or the Middle French corruption guyd
hommes, hence it is the focus for soldiers in battle. The significance of the guidon is that it represents
the unit and its commanding officer. When the commander is in, his or her guidon is displayed for
everyone to see. When he leaves for the day, the guidon is taken down. It is an honor, although
sometimes a dubious one, to be the guidon carrier for a unit, known as a guidon bearer or guide . He
or she stands in front of the unit alongside of the commander (or the commander s representative), and
is the rallying point for troops to fall into formation when the order is given. In drill and ceremonies
the guidon and commander are always in front of the formation.

The Impact of the New Deal on the United States Essay
The Impact of the New Deal on the United States The Great Depression, an era of great poverty,
misery, and hopelessness, proved to be one of the most dreadful time periods in all of America s
history. During the Great Depression, dreams were lost and having a moderate amount of food
everyday became a difficult challenge for many. Nonetheless, through the dark clouds, appeared the
next president of the United States: Franklin Delano Roosevelt. By offering hope in his inaugural
address, Roosevelt boosted morale and despair ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In later days, Congress created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in June1933. This reform
insured each bank deposited up to $2,500 a day and consequently, banks gained more trust from their
investors. As money once again started to flow, it helped stabilize the financial situation of the
country. After achieving this goal without difficulty, Roosevelt issued an executive order to create the
Farm Credit Administration. The purpose of this was to provide low interest, long term loans to
farmers. Farmers then paid off mortgages and overdue taxes, bought back lost farms, and purchased
the needed seed, fertilizer, and equipment. The outcome of this program was quite obvious; farming
would once again flourish and thus, more food available for the American people. In April, Roosevelt
asked Congress to create a similar program expect for non farming personal. Congress without
hesitation passed the Home Owners Loan Corporation. It addressed the problem to those who could
not pay off their mortgage. By 1936 it saved at least a million American families by granting them low
interest, long term mortgage loans.
Other programs established because of the New Deal, were aimed for many unemployed Americans.
Roosevelt in May of 1933 encouraged Congress to establish the Federal Emergency Relief
Administration, with half a billion dollars for relief aid to be given directly to

The Ff Personal Narrative
The FF
Once there was a boy named Charles. Charles was 13 years old with dark hair and greenish blueish
eyes. He was tall with the cleverness of a rock. He didn t make very good grades as a student and was
focusing on sports. His mother and father were very nice people with astounding personalities. His
mother had light hair with green eyes and his father had dark hair like his and blue eyes. They were a
kind family overall.
One day, they decided to journey off to california for their summer vacation. Charles was not really
excited for this vacation. He wanted to stay home and hang out with his friends. When they were
heading to the airport their car broke down in the middle of the highway and they had to spend the
night at a hotel. This hotel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Memory Of De Twisting The Knob On The Stereo, Fats...
In the Memory of Dean
Twisting the knob on the stereo, Fats Domino s voice filled the open room.
I ll be down to get you in a taxi, honey, You better be ready about half past eight, Now dearie, don t be
late, I want to be there when the band starts playing.
When Dean recognized his favorite song song, a smile tugged at the corners of his lips, his eyes
growing bright. Using all the strength I had, I pulled my best friend out of his wheelchair, taking his
wrinkled hand into mine. We sway to the beat, back and forth, to and fro, all while Dean s deep voice
crooned away to a song nearly a century old. He is the perfect dancing partner charming, happy, and

Louis Armstrong crooned in the background and a hunchbacked man smiled at me from across the
room. This was not your ordinary day care center.
As Open Circle s staff started to assign students to different clients in the large room, I struggled to not
let the disappointment show on my face. Here I was, excited to spend a day with little kids: playing
dress up, Barbies, hide and go seek, but instead, I ended in up in an old folks home. I sighed heavily,
at least I got out of gym class.
One of the staff members looked at me. McCrae, how about you go talk to Dean.
I scanned the room, looking for a name tag labeled Dean. And there it was, plastered to the sweater of
the hunchbacked man that has smiled at me. He looks just like a turtle... his head pulled in close to his
shoulders, back rounded, he was even wearing green. I walked over to him, trying to bring a sincere
smile to my face.
Hey Dean! My name is McCrae. Can I sit with you?
A gentle stare was my response. I plopped down in a chair next to him anyways, realizing that starting
a conversation with this man would not be easy.
So, Dean, how are you?
No response.
What s your favorite color? Mine is pink. Or blue. Or purple. I really can t decide.
Nothing. I sighed, looking around the room, waiting for a good question to pop out at me.
Dean! You are right next to the radio! Do you like music?
A simple nod. But I noticed the older

  • 3. Bartleby, The Scrivener, By Melville Melville s short story Bartleby, the Scrivener describes the narrator as an elderly old man that wishes to give details of the life of Bartleby the scrivener. Bartleby was a complete motionless human being who refuses to interact with the world around him. These actions shape the short story, picking at the viewer s mind as to why Bartleby is disconnected from society. Bartleby worked in the dead letter office; therefore this may have triggered his inability to relate to the world around him. This motionless docility covered his inner troubles that he withheld from the world. The narrator states I have known very many of them, professionally and privately, and if I pleased, could relate divers histories, at which good natured gentlemen might smile, and sentimental souls might weep (Melville). In this statement he means that many persons might choose to smile as they find pleasure in reading Bartleby as much as those who might weep because they find the short story to be discouraging. In the 1970 s adaptation of this short story, the narrator is one of those sentimental souls who weeps for Bartleby. However, as the narrator eventually becomes speechless to Bartleby preferring not to do his work, he also brings to life the humor of Bartleby s story. Unlike the sympathetic and sometimes humorous narration of the short story and 1970 adaptation, the 2001 adaptation of Bartleby s story presents Bartleby as a terrifying and strange man. • 4. Social Disorganization Theory On Urban Ecology And Burgess... Social Disorganization Nicole Hofmann Criminological Theory University of Tampa Abstract Social Disorganization theory has its roots in urban ecology and Burgess s concentric model. As part of the positivist paradigm of criminology, it poses a scientific examination of the connection of social disorganization and crime mediated by structural factors. The macro level research concludes that a weakening of social bonds between an individual and institutions of socialization will lead to delinquency. Over time, there has been much empirical support for the theory and extensions have been made to include more reliable measures of social disorganization within a community. This paper will discuss the origins of the theory developed by Shaw and McKay, then move forward to prominent empirical support, social disorganization research on suburban areas and lead up to valid criticism of the theory. Finally, there will be an examination of the policy implications originally posed and a proposal towards a more integrated approach addressing causes for social disorganization through the critical paradigm of criminology. Introduction Social disorganization theory is part of the positivist paradigm of criminology, a scientific approach to crime causes, and part of the Chicago School of crime. While trait theories under the positivist approach assume that crime is cause by internal factors, social disorganization theory relies on the assumption that crime is caused by environmental ... • 5. The Punctuated Equilibrium Theory Has Had Much More... NARRATOR: We begin our night at the Witte family dinner table. All the guests have finally arrived and fresh bread rolls complete with garlic butter have been served to everyone. At one end of the fairly large table, Gould and Lyell begin to have a heated conversation. LYELL: *Clears throat* Ah, excuse me, Mr. Gould, but for your new theory, have you been successfully able to find any support for it? GOULD: Why, yes, of course Mr. Lyell. The punctuated equilibrium theory has had much more support than the gradualism in the fossil record. LYELL: Oh, really? If you would so kindly elaborate on this, it would be much appreciated. GOULD: Certainly, Mr. Lyell. Well, I have found several specimens at one stage, and several at another instead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the environment or climate changes, then it will kill off the individuals of the species with unfavorable traits to survive in the new conditions. That is nothing new, it s here proven in Mr. Darwin s theory; you should be well aware of it. Well, the environment does not change gradually, and therefore, I believe my good Sir, that animals don t change gradually. LYELL: But it is clear *interrupted by Mendel* MENDEL: Gentlemen, I am so sorry to break up this wonderful discussion, but I really was listening intently out of interest in it, but the butter seems to have gone around to your side of the table, and I cannot quite reach it. Would you be so kind and pass it to me? SCENE 2 NARRATOR: As the task of passing the butter is completed, the conversation soon turns to Mendel, as Wade asks him more about the modern world. WADE: So, Mr. Mendel, how do you like our modern world? MENDEL: Ah, well everything has changed in this world. I am becoming very lost, very quickly. WADE: Well, you know, not everything is changing. • 8. Technology Is A Helpful Tool For Teaching The Writing Process Technology is a helpful tool for teaching the writing process, and Marchisan and Alber (2001) concluded that writers can be taught to write using the writing process approach paired with tools of technology, direct instruction, and committed well trained teachers. Graham, (2008), Graham and Perin (2007a), and Rogers and Graham, (2008), agreed that technology makes the process of writing easier and often provides very specific types of support. Word processing provides at least four advantages: (a) revisions are easily made, (b) publishing is professional looking, (c) typing provides an easier means for children with fine motor skill challenges to produce text, and (d) word processing programs have software programs, such as spell and stylistic checkers designed to reduce specific types of miscues. Other tools are speech synthesis (i.e., the writer s spoken words are transcribed to electronic text) and word prediction programs (i.e., the computer program reduces the key strokes by predicting the writer s next word). This is helpful for students with difficulties with spelling and the mechanics of writing. In addition, outlining and semantic mapping software can aide with the planning process, and the use of computer networks and the Internet can help to promote communication and collaboration among writers. Students prefer technology based assignments and are found to use more words and an expanded vocabulary when expressing themselves in blog posts (Berezina, 2011; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wood thrush commonly hide their nests under leaves in a shady area in the midstory level, so it is important to have vertically and horizontally diverse stands (Hagenbauch et al. 2011 a). Invasive species can affect forest health, regeneration, and forest structure, so invasive species could have crowded out live trees, decreasing the above ground live tree carbon pool. The unharvested stand has not been cut in the past three decades so this factor should not affect the above ground carbon pool significantly, though it has likely been harvested more than the old growth forest stands sampled in Hoover et al. This short story is about Montressor s seek of revenge to Fortunato who had hurt him a thousand times and learned that Fortunato laughed at his proud name, Montressor, the name of an old and honored family (Poe). Montressor devises a plan of revenge by using Fortunato s great weakness; he liked to drink good wine, indeed he drank much of it (Poe). While Sova defines it as political and religious conflict as the root for revenge, I believe that this is just a conflict between two rich men of great arrogance who had their feelings hurt and wanted to use family power for revenge because two people of a political and religious conflict does not simply go into each other s house and start drinking together. Montressor continues to express his care and insist that they should go back. He explains to Fortunato that he will be ill, and cannot be responsible (Poe). They re found commonly within many types of mathematics: Number Theory, Euler Maclaurin summation, and power series are some exampled. Once Bernoulli s ideas were published, it gave flight to many mathematicians in the field of probability. You can consider Jakob Bernoulli as the founding father of probability. What can become of me if I fail this class? Or what will become of me if I have to drop the course. Do you have utile scanner. Introduction The Bernoulli family is the most prominent family in the mathematical world; the name Bernoulli belonged to six mathematicians at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries. Bernoulli numbers first appeared in 1713 in Ars Conjectandi [page 97] written by Jakob Bernoulli(1654 1705). With the publication of Ars Conjectandi, the development of probability was brought about; it is considered the founding idea of probability. Bernoulli worked for many years on his book, although his work was incomplete it made headway once it was published regarding the use of rational numbers in a sequence regarding trigonometry functions. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, FDI is said to be the most important contributing factor for Malaysia s economic performance. The early beginnings of luring foreign investors to Malaysian soil started with the introduction of the Investment Incentives Act 1968, and followed by the establishment of the Free Trade Zones (FTZs) during the Second Malaysia Plan (1971 75). Since then, Malaysia has attracted a large portion of the investment dollar that flowed into Asia. In 1995, for example, Malaysia was the second largest FDI recipient among Asian economies at US$ 5.8 billion. Malaysia recorded inward FDI of USD 7.3 billion and USD 6.3 billion in 1996 and 1997 respectively. The lower figures in 1997 may be attributed to the lack of confidence as a result of the Asian financial crisis but by 1998, figures indicate that investor confidence had improved. Malaysia s highest FDI inflow was recorded in 2007 when the amount surged to USD 8.4 billion from USD 6.0 billion in 2006. FDIs are private sector investments that are made by a company into a foreign country. Foreign direct investments create a strong demand for a local currency and help boost the economy. With money coming into a country, strong foreign direct investment is one way governments can finance current account deficits. However, just as funds flow in, they also can flow out,

It also allows more bookings to be made simultaneously, which will make it possible for airlines to process more bookings more quickly. From an environmental perspective, it is apparent that the world is starting to realise that increases in tourism are having a negative impact on the environment. This is due to increases in energy consumption, which in turn heightens the effects of global warming (Neto, 2002). There are many controls that governments are trying to put into place, such as flight rationing (Liverpool Business School, 2009). However, it can be argued that these have not really begun to have a significant effect on tourism, as they are still insufficient to dampen demand. It may become a problem in future years, as the number of controls is likely to increase. Perhaps the largest environmental factor would be natural disasters, like Hurricane Katrina (Cashell, 2005) and the tsunami that hit Asia in December 2004 (Birkland, 2006). These will impact negatively on people s confidence in visiting places that have been hit severely by such disasters. This changes changes him into a completely new person with new believes and views about the world. Over the course of the book, Elie changes from a person who believes in good and that God is fair to someone who is bitter, angry at his God, and only thinks about surviving. This is important to the book as a whole because it connects to his central character trait and how it changed throughout the book. The change is apparent when he was angry at his God for not preventing the barbick actions of the Germans, when he talks about how men were stronger than God, and when his father died he couldn t think of anything but how to survive. At the start of the book Elie was an innocent kid that only wanted to learn new things and dedicated himself to his God and family. Elie became friends with a foreign Jew that lived in his town name Moshe the Beadle. Is it physical appearance, personality or mentality? These three factors separate each individual from one another and it is what makes them different. Physical appearance, personality and mentality are made up from the same building blocks which are known as DNA sequences. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), is a self replicating material that is found throughout every living organism. It s a large macromolecule that transforms characteristics into life. DNA is made up two strands that run in opposite directions therefore they are known to be antiparallel. The lagging strand runs in the 5 3 direction while the leading strand run s in the 3 5 direction (International Baccalaureate Organization, 2009). There s a phosphate group attached by a covalent bond to the carbon atom which is covalently attached to a nucleotide base. The two DNA strands are attached to each other by hydrogen bonds. The Social Labeling Theory Crime Theory The Social Labeling Theory The social labeling theory infers that descriptive classifications may at times define an individual s behavior or self identity. The theory closely relates to stereotyping or self fulfilling prophecies. The theory of social labeling explains why defiant individuals engage in activities that go against cultural or societal norms (Crossman, 2014). Though popular in the early 1970s, theorists have redefined the theory trying to avail assertions that conform to the present social formations. The labeling theory relies on unwanted descriptors including defiance, mental disorder diagnosis, or disability while trying to explain non conformance to prevalent stipulations or societal requirements. Stigma is an example of a social label that redefines an individual s identity and concept in society. The Theory of Reintegrative Shaming The reintegrative shaming theory remains common practice in the numerous criminal justice systems around the world. Through the reintegrative theory, the justice system sought to create a long lasting bond between offenders and the society. John Braithwaite designed and formulated the reintegrative shaming theory seeking to avail a feasible alternative to the social labeling theory (Zhang, 2004). It is crazy to think about some of the things that people charge others that do not have any real significance. For instance, Michael Sandel pointed how in some cities, non violent offenders can pay ninety dollars a night for a prison cell upgrade. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Marxist viewpoint on the family revolves around a capitalist society and believes that the nuclear family is not a functionally necessary institution, although it is probably the best suited. However, Marxists believe that the family bases itself upon private property and profit, whereby men marry and then have children to pass on their profit to and women simply marry the men for financial security. Together, Marxist feminists also revolve their viewpoint around a capitalist society but focus more on the woman s role, rather than heirs and profit. They believe that the woman s primary role is based within the home and therefore can be exploited as a source of cheap labour because she is dependant on that of her husband s income. The woman, they believe, is a housewife doing home chores to increase the father s ability to work and thus delivering more to society. Also, by nurturing and teaching their children to become the next viable source of workers in the future, the woman is helping society and saving on capitalisation costs. This therefore lays a foundation for their children to be obedient later in life, punctual and altogether submit to their boss in later life, without the need for society training these conformities, thus having cost nothing to the capitalist. In the first section, we briefly define various encryption components like wavelet transform, bit plane decomposition, XOR operation, artificial neural network, seed key generator and chaotic map functions, for interest of the reader. Later in section 2, we present literature review of various encryption techniques from two perspectives: applications to highlight scope of research in this domain; and approaches to provide overall view of multimedia encryption. The section three provides a new two layer encryption technique for JPEG2000 compatible images. The first step provides a single layer of encryption using a neural network to generate a pseudo random sequence with a 128 bit key, which XORs with bit planes obtained from image subbands to generate encrypted sequences. The second step develops another layer of encryption using a cellular neural network with a different 128 bit key to develop sequences with hyper chaotic behavior. These sequences XOR with selected encrypted bit planes (obtained in step 1) to generate doubly encrypted bit planes. Finally, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Cuban Descent Cultural competence is a set of behaviors, attitudes, and policies, among professionals enabling them to work competently in cross cultural events. It is the ability to provide care to patients with diverse beliefs, behaviors, and values. This also involves meeting a patient s cultural, language, and social needs. Health care related disparities, changing demographics and globalization make it important that nurses are culturally competent in the workplace. To do this, nurses must be able to engage in cultural self assessment, value diversity, and be culturally aware. Nurses must also understand and effectively respond to cultural differences. As a culturally competent nurse, you will have a more effective interaction with patients and families. If a patient of Cuban descent is assigned, specific nursing considerations are needed such as maintaining eye contact, using body language to help explain any teachings, making the family feel as involved as possible, and keep in mind that the family s opinion is considered very important. One characteristic of the Cuban culture that must be considered when providing culturally congruent care is eye contact, body language, and talking in close proximity is very important when communicating. • 40. Daniel Gilbert Reporting Live From Tomorrow Analysis Happiness in Old Age In Daniel Gilbert s Reporting Live from Tomorrow , Gilbert makes use of statistics, studies, and experiments to convey a multitude of ideas, primarily the concept that while many people are opposed to, or are in disbelief of it, turning to surrogates as means of predicting our own future is quite effective. Gilbert s concepts and theories are quite important to take into consideration not only as a general message of how human beings tend to let factors such as their imagination or their own self image cloud their perspective on the future, but rather as an alternative viewpoint and how through surrogates, we are able to make more accurate predictions on our own future, such as what will be providing us happiness when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s a mindset like this that distances us from others because we believe that because our own thoughts are subjective and different to those around us, making us unique to others regardless of whether or not there s a similar goal. By looking past this, it allows us to be less hesitant in looking at others when it comes to predicting our own future, especially in the case of those around us that may be pursuing similar goals, majors, or careers. In the case of predicting my own future in particular, I d have to rely mainly of the adults around me in my life, as well as various older acquaintances that have shared stories of their similar interests and what those developed into. Ultimately, from this perspective I can assume in my later years I d find much of my happiness through writing and reading, specifically in topics or areas that are more reflective of my later interests. What s important to note here is that while numerous adults and figures in my life do enjoy and share these hobbies and find much of their happiness in them, it s also worth acknowledging that many of their interests, jobs, and ultimately people who they surround themselves with is consistent, in my case that s still very much subject to change. This is a very noteworthy point to raise, being that while there are some aspects that can be predicted such as what kind of hobbies I d possibly find enjoyment in, the interests I d inherit in my later ... • 41. TRUST AND INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND IDENTIFYING... TRUST AND INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS When working in teams, is trust assumed or do team members have to earn trust? As in all aspects in life involving people s trust is in no way just given but obtained by earning it. Trust among individuals is dynamic and through similar experience it is earned. Nevertheless, trust cannot be clarified exclusively through the interaction among individuals, but also through incredibly private points of view. We are inclined to trust individuals who we regard as trustable. The assessment about an individual s credibility or whether or not they can be trusted is none the less still completely subjective. Through our own individual experiences, background, stereotypes, and prejudices is how we look at an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Msanjila and Afsarmanesh (2008), who proposed numerous resolutions for building trust: focus on the what and not the how, define the parameter of operations, hold everyone accountable and set some consequences. While involved in a team, individuals need to trust their teammates in order to complete all tasks because getting the work done involves all members, which in turn stresses cooperation and collaboration. The loss of trust will cause conflicts to arise and members of the team will be unwilling to compromise, cooperate and agreements will never be achieved which will jepardizes the tasks from being accomplished. If a team loses that trust it may never truly be earned again and if it is, it takes an extraordinary amount of commitment and effort for it to be regained. Keeping trust between individuals while working on a team, individuals must display the expectation and standard set by the team. Each team member has to be accountable for their actions, they need to be committed to the team and steer clear of excessively taking advantage of their teammates. For example, deadlines will be set by the team for individual tasks according to a team agreement; each individual needs to keep the promise to fulfill their assigned task on time as agreed. If this does not happen, trust will possibly be lost since other members of the team are depending and relying upon that individual s accomplishments. An additional instance ... • 42. Mistakes In Into Thin Air Mistakes That Lead to Tragedies and Precautions That Lead to Success The best way to bring attention to a problem is tragedy. Unfortunately, this means reform will not happen until the loss or harm of life has already occurred. One example of this was seen in New York, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. This fire was the cause of 146 deaths and many more injuries; however, this lead to new law regulating work safety standards. While this is a tragedy that caused reform in 1911, the same method of reform stands today. This can be seen in the novel, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. The novel is an account of what happened on the mountain during the 1996 Everest expedition. While the expedition started off with high hopes and dreamers ready ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to continue climbing Everest, many aspects of climbing need to be improved before more people endanger their lives to try and reach the roof of the world. The guides have some areas that need the most reform. During the ascension of Everest the guides made a plethora mistakes that seemed insignificant but only aided in disaster. The guides first mistake is allowing any bloody idiot [with enough determination] up Everest (Krakauer 153). By allowing any bloody idiot with no climbing experience to try and climb the most challenging mountain in the world, the guides are almost inviting trouble. Having inexperienced climbers decreases the trust a climbing team has in one another, causing an individual approach to climbing the mountain and more reliance on the guides. While this approach appears fine, this fault is seen in addition to another in Scott Fischer s expedition Mountain Madness. Due to the carefree manner in which the expedition was run, clients [moved] up and down the mountain independently during the acclimation period, [Fischer] had to make a number of hurried, unplanned excursions between Base Camp and the upper camps when several clients experienced problems and needed to be escorted down, (154). Two problems present in the Mountain Madness expedition were seen before the summit push: the allowance of inexperienced climbers and an unplanned climbing regime. A third problem that aided disaster was the difference in opinion in regards to the responsibilities of a guide on Everest. One guide went down alone many hours ahead of the clients and went without supplemental oxygen (318). These three major issues: allowing anyone up the mountain, not having a plan to climb Everest and differences in opinion. All contributed to the disaster on Everest in ... • 43. The Guidon Essay The guidon, also referred to as the colours or the standard, is an important and time honored piece of the military s history that is still observed and revered today. The guidon is thought to have originated from ancient Egytptian times, where it was believed to have represented rulers and the armies they commanded. The idea endured well into medieval European times as it was used to depict each commanders specific coat of arms. This is so that each soldier could see through the dust and smoke created from the battlefield where their particular regiment was located, so as not to be separated from them. We still use guidons today, though maybe not for the same purpose or in the same situations, mainly because of how advanced warfare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Later, battle honors were added to the colours, which made them even more significant and were revered even more by members of the regiment. The colours are never destroyed capriciously anymore. When they get too old and worn out to be used or displayed as the uit standard, they are moved to museums until they moulder into dust. However, in modern armies, if the colours are in danger of being captured by the enemy, there are standing orders for them to be destroyed. It is for this reason and the advent of modern weapons, and subsequent changes in tactics, colours are no longer carried into battle. However, they are still used at formal events and ceremonies. The word guidon derives from the Italian guidone meaning guide or marker and/or the Middle French corruption guyd hommes, hence it is the focus for soldiers in battle. The significance of the guidon is that it represents the unit and its commanding officer. When the commander is in, his or her guidon is displayed for everyone to see. When he leaves for the day, the guidon is taken down. It is an honor, although sometimes a dubious one, to be the guidon carrier for a unit, known as a guidon bearer or guide . He or she stands in front of the unit alongside of the commander (or the commander s representative), and is the rallying point for troops to fall into formation when the order is given. In drill and ceremonies the guidon and commander are always in front of the formation. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This reform insured each bank deposited up to $2,500 a day and consequently, banks gained more trust from their investors. As money once again started to flow, it helped stabilize the financial situation of the country. After achieving this goal without difficulty, Roosevelt issued an executive order to create the Farm Credit Administration. The purpose of this was to provide low interest, long term loans to farmers. Farmers then paid off mortgages and overdue taxes, bought back lost farms, and purchased the needed seed, fertilizer, and equipment. The outcome of this program was quite obvious; farming would once again flourish and thus, more food available for the American people. In April, Roosevelt asked Congress to create a similar program expect for non farming personal. Congress without hesitation passed the Home Owners Loan Corporation. It addressed the problem to those who could not pay off their mortgage. By 1936 it saved at least a million American families by granting them low interest, long term mortgage loans.
