Using Our Reading on Anthony Downs for a Class Discussion...
In this weeks Anthony Downs reading we were able to use the knowledge we have gained about the
structure of institutions so far from our discussions and texts and apply it to voting in politics. In An
Economic Theory of Democracy Downs focused on the calculus behind voting and voter turnout to
draw the conclusion that there is no point in voting. When Downs was explaining the reasoning
behind voting he spoke of the utility income that the government provides to us; these benefits of
utilities are the incentives that should determine the way that we vote and show its importance. Using
the idea of looking to maximize utilities to determine how you vote was a fascinating idea to me and
make me question he inefficiencies that exist in voting today that cause people to vote based on
different reasons. So the irrational ways we base our voting decisions on (instead of utility) is what I
primarily focus on as these voting habits show how citizens vote off superficial issues, not campaign
platforms.
If we are going to pay the costs of spending our time to go cast a vote, register, understand the
candidate options, and pay for the gas to drive to the poles it makes sense to make the best choice you
possibly can; to do so Downs recommends voting for the candidate that will provide you the most
utility. I think Downs should have also included something about the benefit to society as too much
personal interest and a lack of common concern will lead to personal benefit being

Oliver Cromwell Research Paper
Oliver Cromwell, born April 25, 1599. He was the Lord Protector for England, Ireland and Scotland,
also being a military and political leader in earlier stages for England. Oliver was one of ten children.
Having seven sisters and two brothers, Oliver was the only son to survive past infancy. Oliver, along
with his other siblings were all born in Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire, England. While in a local
school as a young boy it was said that he was more or so drawn to being a Puritan by most of his
teachers and professors. He often went against others and their religious beliefs because he was such a
strong willed Puritan. In sixteen sixteen Cromwell entered into Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge but

Huntingdon, where he farmed and helped in local affairs throughout the town. During those few years
he went through several stages of deep depression but got treated by a London doctor by the name of
Theodore de Mayerne in 1628. Elizabeth and Oliver were said to have nine children. From oldest to
youngest was, Robert Cromwell, Oliver Cromwell, Bridget Cromwell, Richard Cromwell who was a
Lord Protector, Henry Cromwell who was Lord Deputy of Ireland, Elizabeth Cromwell, James
Cromwell, Mary Cromwell, and the youngest being Frances Cromwell. In the year of 1631 he sold
most of his land in Huntingdonshire and moved to a place in St. Ives in Cambridgeshire. As he did this
it was said to be a major halt and downgrade in society. He later sent his cousin a letter talking of his
firm beliefs in puritism, also saying that all of the Catholic practices in church needed to stop because
these people were living in sin. By the end of the 1630s Cromwell had become a fully committed
Puritan. So on Oliver s first term in Parliament lasted a little less than a year. The king had declared
war upon Scotland he was forced to call parliament again to raise taxes to help pay for much

Life Cycle Analysis for Brick
Life Cycle Analysis For Brick
1 Materials are very important in construction industry because with the combination of different
material, we can create a very strong and unique building form. There are many type of material that
commonly used in the construction industry, for example the glass, woods, bricks, stones, marble,
concretes and etc. Brick is one of the most commonly used materials in Malaysia, because almost
every house in housing area was built by bricks. From this essay I want to give analysis about the

After that is the drying period, in which the air is heated to a maximum temperature for the clay being
dried, the humidity is gradually decreased to allow the clay to dry uniformly all the way through. And
the third which is the cooling stage, in which the temperature is gradually decreased to uniformity. The
clay is not fully dried when placed in the kiln. Hygroscopic water is not driven off at ordinary
temperatures or even at the boiling point of water. In fact, the temperature often rises quite a bit above
the boiling point before the water is completely evolved. The watersmoking is accomplished by fire in
the kiln furnaces. Wood is frequently used for this purpose, to avoid sooting. In the watersmoking
period it is desired to heat up the brick, evaporate and remove the moisture, and to accomplish this
successfully, it is very necessary that draft be strong. The watersmoking is the most critical point in
the life of the brick. The process must be carried very slowly the water in coming out of the clay may
crack the surface. After the watersmoking is completed, the temperature is increase to that required in
oxidation. Oxidation begins in the later stages of vitrification, but the greater part occurs between the
temperatures of 800oF and 1300oF. At this stage most of the impurities are given off and the metals
constituting the clay are changed to their respective oxides. The highest temperature reached at this
point is usually near

Florence Was The Birthplace Of The Italian Renaissance
The Italian Renaissance was a period in history unlike most others; this was an era of ingenuity,
expansion, and enlightenment that would revolutionize both society as the people of the Renaissance
knew it to be, and as the future generations of individuals across the globe understand it today.
Florence held itself out to be the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, yet the people of this
renaissance era never lost sight of the Greek and Roman heritage. The following essay will discuss the
varying ways in which Florence was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and will provide the
reader with examples that demonstrate Greco Roman ideas and practices in the Italian Renaissance.
One of the most obvious examples in which Greco Roman culture was displayed in the era of the
Italian Renaissance was through the works of art; and more specifically the medium of sculpture. Take
for example, the piece by Donatello, Saint Mark, this piece harkens back to the artwork of the Greek
culture by having the character whom is sculpted to be positioned in the contrappasto style, where the
audience may view the drapery covering his body beneath, particularly his left knee as it projects
forward... He is, in other words, a fully realized human form ; this technique was predominantly used
by Greek artists, and was relatively abandoned by all other artists after the fall of the Greek empire to
the Romans (Sayre, 2015). Yet, the artists of the Italian Renaissance saw the beauty and value of

The Theory Of Personality Psychology
1. We are influenced by our own internal forces, forces of which we are unaware, have feelings
towards, or urges we do not quite understand (Freidman, 2012, p. 17). This is the struggle that
personality psychology tries to understand, how and to what extent the unconscious forces plays a role
in human behavior. It is believed that people are responsible for their own actions. There is a
continuous struggle with personality psychology and the comprehension of and to what extent
unconscious forces play in human behavior. Meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two
chemical substances; if there is any reaction both are transformed (Carl Jung 1993, p.57). There are
various questions that are asked about the issues in personality psychology such as, How important are
social influences on the self, such as parental deprivation or excessive praise? Is the sense of self
merely an inconsequential epiphenomenon or secondary perception arising from other forces that
really matter? What is the core of who we are? A second core issue with the studies of personality
studies is does each person require a unique approach? Gordon Allport argued that a key aspect of the
study of personality must focus on the individual and thus be idiographic (p.18). To generalize an
individual is a complication in itself because the personality of each person is complex in its own way
so how can we generalize? Obtaining an answer to that question is still a dilemma. Allport complained

Transition To Total War
Total war breaks down the line separating combatants and non combatants through a series of
ideological and social justifications that allowed for barbaric acts to be committed. A war becomes
total when the nation itself must dedicate every facet of its existence as a state to the war effort. The
general population being brought into the war effort brings to question their innocence, thus making
them targets for the enemy. The transition from a small scale war into a total war is a gradual process,
as adjusting a nation s economy and society to feed the war is a long and difficult process.
The transition to total war depends mainly on the length of the war and the number of casualties. A
short war would not require the kind of resources and civilian support that an expansive war would
require. The Great War is often cited as being the first total war, and that is clear through the
population s view of the war as well as the soldier s. A total war can only happen if nationalism and
patriotism are high and on nearly all fronts nationalism is what rooted the soldiers in the trenches and
gave them the determination. Nationalism also gave the non combatants on the home front a reason to
support the war in other ways.
From the start this war was a different type than the cabinet style wars that were fought in the past ...

sideline, my coach jumps on my back, and throws his clipboard onto the field. As the final seconds
burn off the clock, the whole stadium empties onto the field to celebrate the win. As our Palatka

Compare The Rate Of Decomposition Of Hydrogen Peroxide Lab...
Background
The decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide can be expressed in this chemical equation:
2H2O2 (l) 2H2O (l) + O2 (g). This process is commonly found in organism as it is a byproduct of
metabolism. An accumulation of hydrogen peroxide is dangerous so as a result the body system
developed a way to speed up this decomposition. Commonly called a catalyst, which speeds up the
reaction. Catalysts may range from enzyme to inorganic catalysts. In this experiment this employ a
heterogeneous catalysis, in which the reactants are in different phase from each other. It is also
important to note that the catalyst is not consumed in the reaction even though they speed up the
reaction.

Coca cola bottlers incident led to the company s compromised reputation Gladys Loretta in Surabaya
Sunday 3 May 2015 07.20 WIB
The Coca cola bottlers incident where union members and the workers are murdered started on the
1990s. This incident is considered as a corporate crime. A corporate crime is a crime made by a
company that harms other people s lives. Sometimes they harm the ecosystem as well. However, on
this case, the Coca cola bottlers did not harm the ecosystem but they hurt their own workers and the
union members. Coca cola bottlers hired illegal paramilitary groups to intimidate, threaten, and kill
their own workers. These paramilitary groups also threatened to lease a bomb attack on the union
headquarters. All they did was to scare the lives of the union members and the workers. They also
hired far right militias of the United Self Defence Forces of Colombia (AUC) to murder nine union
members. Coca cola was able to dodge from this case as they claimed that they weren t involved with
the death of the union members. The killer itself is the AUC soldier and they got an order from the

Introduction
Safety is the state of serenity being devoid of harm or any form of event that may be considered non
desirable. In any type of institution, be it, a business, school, industry, laboratory or even the common
workplace, safety plays a major role in ensuring activities run smoothly and no one gets hurt while
doing their job. Safety encompasses protection from a wide host of potential hazards which could be
physical, financial, emotional or biological. In the common workplace health is a major concern and
infection control is the main aim of a safety handbook. Biosafety in the work setup starts by assuming

Harry Truman s mother and father were unable to decide on his middle name: the two names

Following a practice not uncommon among those of Scotch Irish ancestry, Mattie and John Truman

contributed to the contentment he enjoyed during his boyhood, the carefree circumstances that led

Essay on The Effectiveness of Native Title
The Effectiveness of Native Title
The debate about native title issues has tended to see issues from idealistic perspectives ignoring the
practical realities that native title poses to governments, industry and indigenous people. The
implementation of the Native Title is an appropriate and significant aspect of Australia s common and
statute law, which effectively strives to develop a fair outcome for all Australian citizens. The Native
Title Act 1993, like the court Mabo decision in 1992, transforms the ways in, which indigenous

The aboriginals were not recognised as land owners until the High Court decision of the Mabo case in
1992, which was closely followed by the adoption of the Native Title Act 1993. The decision of the
Mabo case effectively benefits the many aboriginals whose ancestors where unfortunate having had
their land and homes invaded by Europeans in 1788.
There are many stakeholders involved in the dispute revolving around native title however, both the

The process of claiming land in more complex then simply applying for the claim, for native title to

Government believes it has provided a fair and balanced framework for the future by adopting the

The interpretation of native title is often misunderstood, which results in the establishment many
negative opinions regarding native claims. The claim of native title does not mean indigenous people
own the land they claim, it simply gives them the right to a say in the production, development and
use of the land. In some cases aboriginals receive small amounts

The Influence Of Ethnic And Ethnic Culture
1: How did sports help create and maintain ethnic and racial identity in this period? Why do you think
this happened? Be sure to include Moses Fleetwood Walker as one of the individuals in your
discussion.
There was a great many ways in which sports helped to form and keep ethnic and racial identities
during the time frame. Some ethnic groups used their culture s sports, and the clubs they formed, in
order to resist assimilation into American culture thus keeping their own country s ethnic culture
intact. While some groups made the choice to maintain their ethnic culture rather than integrate it with
America s larger culture, others had no say in the matter. The group that comes to mind are the African
American people. Contrary to European clubs that tended to fight inclusion African Americans wished
to be integrated into the American culture but were denied due to systemic racism spanning across the
country. Even when they were allowed to participate in sports it wasn t for long. Take Moses
Fleetwood Walker for instance, he was one of the first African Americans to play professional baseball
because another team s player manager refused to play games with an African American (Gems 145).
One of the few real sports avenues left for African Americans was the sport of boxing and even that
was rife with racism. The only reason Africans were even allowed to participate because white
spectators enjoyed watching the brutalization of blacks (Gems 145).

Ordinary Men b Christopher Browning Essay
In the book Ordinary Men, Christopher Browning tackles the question of why German citizens
engaged in nefarious behavior that led to the deaths of millions of Jewish and other minorities
throughout Europe. The question of what drove Germans to commit acts of genocide has been
investigated by numerous historians, but unfortunately, no overarching answer for the crimes has yet
been decided upon. However, certain theories are more popular than others. Daniel Goldhagen in his

It is now that Browning goes in depth on the massacre that occurred in Jozefow. Of the perpetrators,
Browning mentions that many were middle aged policemen who were given a choice of whether or
not they wanted to take part in killing the Jewish population in this area. The major who offered a
reprieve from being involved in the slaughter was Major Trapp, of the 500 men who would be present,
only a mere dozen would accept his offer. Afterwards, the slaughter began with one soldier stating I
shot the child that belonged to her, because I reasoned with myself that after all without its mother the
child could not live any longer; so to speak, soothing to my conscience to release children unable to
live without their mothers. (Browning 73) It is at this point that Browning proceeds to put forth his
argument as to why he believes what he postulated in his theory. He uses this scene to catapult himself
into an argument of why anti Semitism was not the main driving force behind the killing. Years later,
once the soldiers were interrogated and the soldier recounted this scene to Browning and others, there
was a glaring omission, and that was of anti Semitism as a driving force to kill the Jews. Browning
highlights this important part of the discussion with the former soldiers as indicating that their sole
motivation was not just hatred

The Rise Of Democracy Throughout Europe Essay
The Rise of Democracy in Europe The rise of democracy within Europe was vital to the importance of
the individual, and was marked by a transition from the governing by one feudal lord, to the governing
by an elected official. This transition brought change not only to humanistic thinking, but also enabled
mankind to have basic human rights which improved life for the country s citizens. This shift of
thinking to the rights of individuals was spurred by the Protestant Reformation and the creation of the
social contract which enabled a perfect atmosphere for the rise of democracy within Europe. During
the feudal system, military lords ruled the people with little regard for human rights. The people were
used only as pawns for the wellbeing of the feudal system and were seen as such, but with the rise of
an economy based on money instead of land, the feudal system began to rapidly decline. As the feudal
system dwindled away, the individual rights of man increased with the rise of the market economy,
which in turn propelled the spirit of democracy within the people (International Center for Peace and
Development ). While money began to circulate within this new type of economy, the financial
stability of the monarchs began to collapse, while the merchant class was becoming wealthy. This
transition of wealth tore down the stronghold that had suppressed the population during the feudal
system, and allowed the wealthy merchant power to become important political figures.

The Christian Science Movement
Recently, Pope Francis has modernized the Roman Catholic Church by urging followers to support
scientists in preserving our environment. Pope Francis has drawn parallels between the scientific and
Christian communities, who are witnessing the convergence of their distinct approaches to reality in
the shared goal of protecting our common home, threatened as it is by ecological collapse and
consequent increase of poverty and social exclusion (Pope Francis). As the contemporary world faces
new problems, like climate change, Roman Catholic Christianity has supported the need for science as
a means to preserve the Earth and guard humanity.
As science developed, Protestant Christianity has been more harmonious with modernity and has

Christian Science was founded by Mary Baker Eddy when she was inexplicably cured of her nervous
disorders while reading a biblical account where Jesus performs a miracle to heal the sick. Eddy had
seen many doctors for her nervous disorders, but none could cure her. In 1975 she published Science
and Health with Key to the Scriptures, where she defined her own Science which rejected modern
science. She discounts facts from natural science as they represent a kingdom necessarily divided
against itself, because these definitions portray law as physical, not spiritual (Eddy 118). Since natural
science is only concerned with what can be physically observed, she says the field is irrelevant due to
its ignorance of spiritual law. Eddy creates her own form of Science, which is purely spiritual. In
differentiating between Christian Science and natural science she admits the two differ but are equally
scientific since her Science is based on Truth, the Principle of all science (Eddy 124). In forming her
movement Eddy rejected the need for science and modern medicine, arguing that by praying correctly
any illness can be healed. The Christian Science has not been particularly successful in adapting to
modern science, however, the movement has gained a large following. Christian Science has gained
public attention for its complete rejection modern medicine but has differed significantly from other

Thomas Hobbes Leviathan Essay
A state of nature is a hypothetical state of being within a society that defines such a way that particular
community behaves within itself. English philosopher Thomas Hobbes proclaimed that, A state of
nature is a state of war. By this, Hobbes means that every human being, given the absence of
government or a contract between other members of a society, would act in a war like state in which
each man would be motivated by desires derived solely with the intention of maximizing his own
utility.
He claims that acts of kindness, charity and benevolence are always actions that the performer
believes will result in a beneficial consequence for himself. Hobbes basis for this argument lies in the
concept of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most highly organized social network is called a commonwealth, a web of contracts between
members of a community, which according to Hobbes is synonymous to the formation of an entirely
new person of which each individual is but a working part (Leviathan 2, 17). Hence the title of
Hobbes most famous work, Leviathan, which is a sea monster that lives off of the sea of individuals.
And who is to rule this commonwealth?
Hobbes answers that there needs to be a sovereign, to judge and enforce the laws of the contracts
(Leviathan 2, 18). This sovereign, who is either chosen by the creators of the covenant (institution) or
who forces people under his rule (acquisition) has the final rule in enforcing the laws.
Essentially what Hobbes is saying by all of this is that human beings are not fit to govern themselves.
The notion of the social contract serves the purpose of saving us from ourselves because, according to
Hobbes, humans are not able to do that on their own. The idea of acting on behalf of the common
good is, while comprehensible in theory, impossible for humans to execute.
In criticizing Hobbes argument, it is extremely important to understand that the very theory of the
state of nature is purely arbitrary. Such a state has never existed. While Hobbes states that the idea of a
state of nature is hypothetical, a certain validity must be denied in the absence of evidence.

Civilization Vs Civilization Essay
The sun sets on a magnificent secluded island with rushing ocean waves, warm lagoons, exotic fruits,
and more privacy than one could imagine that is, until a plane filled with dozens of boys aged six to
twelve comes crashing down from the sky. Lord of the Flies, a novel by William Golding, starts on the
boys dream island, a place with plenty of food to eat, plenty of friends to play with, and plenty of
freedom, considering that there are no grownups for miles. The novel exhibits a theme centered
around civilization. William Golding s use of symbolism in the forms of the conch shell, the character,

The next symbol, Jack, stands for savagery. Jack started on the island as the head of a small choir and

paint mask to successfully hunt a pig. Golding writes, He capered toward Bill, and the mask was a
thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self consciousness. (83). The face
paint allowed Jack to embody a savage hunter, his desire to kill a pig becoming an obsession, and once
he killed, he craved drawing blood from whatever and whoever he could. The fundamentals of Jack s
society rely on using force to achieve what is necessary. Robert states, I don t know. He didn t say. He

savage mentality simply for his own benefit of being viewed as powerful. His civilization revolves
around killing and threatening, forcing the boys into the group and making them pay in their own
blood to leave. Jack represents savagery because of the way he acts: he harms others for no reason and
is far too eager to draw blood. His tribe, run by savagery, is not

Green Symbolism In The Great Gatsby
Looking Green, Old Sport Throughout literature, colors are used to represent feelings, emotions and
actions of characters. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the color green is used to
represent the love story between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. As he grew up and worked for his
immense fortune, Gatsby transformed his life into one he felt would impress her the most. Fitzgerald
uses the color green to represent Gatsby s perfect image of Daisy, and the greed that engulfs the
couple throughout the entire novel. Green often is used to represent a fresh start someone experiences

The iconic green light s meaning also changed for Gatsby. While he used to see the symbol of his love
and hopes for Daisy in the green light, but now it occurred to him that the colossal significance of that
light had now vanished forever, and Nick continues to describe that now it was a green light on a
dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one (93). For years Gatsby sought a change in
his life, and he hoped the change would finally get the love of his life back, but the change he needed
was to let himself begin to move on. Fitzgerald used green to show a new beginning, and now Gatsby
was achieving his own. During October, Nick finally moves away from the Late Mr. Gatsby s home.
In addition, Jordan tells Daisy life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall (118) during an
earlier section in the novel. Autumn is the time of year when green leaves and grass fade to a yellow
and brown to die, symbolizing the feeling Gatsby felt for Daisy dying along with him. The last time
Gatsby was even seen was when he disappeared among the yellowing trees (161). His final moments
were spent walking among green trees that were beginning to fade to yellow, like the way his perfect
image of Daisy and his love for her faded as well. The color green became a symbol of a restart, like
how Gatsby felt after he let himself begin to move on from

Stereotypes In Truman Capote s In Cold Blood
In the non fiction novel In Cold Blood, Truman Capote mediates the story of the murders of the
Clutter family using the third person narrative. Through his lens, which contains his own prejudices
and sympathies towards the characters, the readers are guided to see things from certain perspectives.
His focused language and complex characterisation consequently have a significant influence on the
reader s opinion of the characters as the story progresses, particularly the two murderers: Perry Smith
and Dick Hickock. Despite them both being criminals, Capote was able to meet them in person for
interviews, conducted without the use of notes or tape recording, allowing him to form bonds and his
own opinions of them.
Capote s connection and stronger sympathies to Perry are evident in the novel and due to the fact that
they both came from tough backgrounds; were struggling with their sexuality in a society with
widespread gay oppression, and had been treated like outsiders to society. This could be a source of
influence of Capote s kinder depiction of Perry. Dick on the contrary, is described by literary critic

Henry David Thoreau Essay
Henry David Thoreau
Henry David Thoreau was a man who expressed his beliefs of society, government, and mankind
while living under his own self criticism. Thoreau believed he had many weaknesses which made him
a failure. This strong disapproval of himself contrasted with his powerful words and strong actions.
These contradictions led to some of Thoreau s greatest pieces of literature.
Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts on July 12, 1817, in his grandmother s
house. Thoreau believed that Concord was, the most estimable place in all the world, and in the very
nick of time, too (Harding 4). Though Thoreau was born in

That sweet solitude my spirit seemed so early to require at once gave the preference to this recess
among the pines, where almost sunshine and shadow were the only inhabitants that varied the scene,

Thoreau associates Walden Pond with his happiest memories.
Thoreau was a deeply religious man, but disliked church. He was very serious as a child and loved his
solitude (Schneider 4). Thoreau says he was truly happiest when he could be by himself (25). In 1828,
Thoreau and his older brother John, to whom he was closest, went to Concord Academy. Henry was
the smarter of the two and in 1833, was sent to
Harvard University, where he did very well. It was there that Thoreau was first exposed to writing

Compare A S To Sonnet 130
Sonnet 130 is a parody of the conventional love sonnet, made popular by Petrarch and, made popular
in England by Sidney s use of the Petrarchan form in his epic poem Astrophel and Stella. When
comparing the stanzas of A S to Sonnet 130, the reader can clearly see that the sonnet does not use
grandiose metaphors or allusions to build his beloved into a divine figure. Despite it being an obvious
parody, it will be compared to the chosen lines from the Tempest. In Shakespeare s day, metaphors
that allude to putting the beloved on a pedestal of beauty had already become a cliché, but they were
an accepted technique for writing love poetry nonetheless. The way these poems would describe the

Family is idolized by its warmth and safety throughout the novella. In the beginning of The Pearl,
Kino protects his family above all else and does this in an animalistic way. Family is closely tied
together to gender roles in the text, since the duty of the mother and father, husband and wife are an
important part of identity. The narrator explained, Kino heard the creak of the rope when Juana took
Coyotito out of his hanging box and cleaned him and hammocked him in her shawl in a loop that
placed him close to her breast. Kino could see these things without looking at them. Juana sang softly
an ancient song that had only three notes and yet endlessly variety of interval. And this was part of the

Whole (Steinbeck 9). Juana s song has three notes to represent the three members of her and Kino s
family. When Coyotito dies, the entire family is completely destroyed: what is left is no longer whole.

is real and not dependent on monetary value. The greed associated with the pearl blinds Kino s eyes to

How Does Iron Affect The Body
The mineral iron (Fe) is a crucial substance for the human body. Many parts of the body, including red
blood cells, require iron in order for the body to function normally. Only specific amounts of iron are
absorbed by the body to maintain homeostasis. However, iron is a very toxic mineral so if there is too
much iron stored in the body, it can lead to serious consequences. People that suffer from
haemochromatosis, a hereditary iron disorder, are unable to regulate the amount of iron absorbed from
their diet. Almost all iron in the intestine is absorbed into the blood stream and because the human
body has no major way to rid of excess iron, it is stored in organs and joints of the body where it can
cause serious harm. Typically, the body stores one gram or less of iron but people with
haemochromatosis can have up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Iron homeostasis is controlled though a negative feedback loop that involves hormones, including
Hepcidin, which are released to control the absorption of iron. With haemochromatosis, the production
of these hormones is affected. Over time, the build up of iron has a serious effect on cells in the body
which can lead to other fatal diseases or even premature death.
It is vital that the body contains a stable amount of iron. This level of iron is regulated through iron
homeostasis. On average, people take in 10 to 20 mg of iron a day but only absorb 10%. Usually
around 1mg of iron is also lost each day meaning the gain of iron equals the loss. This maintains iron
in the body at a stable level. Iron and many other minerals are absorbed through enterocytes,
absorbing cells that make up the small intestine. These cells are the regulators for how much iron is
moved into the blood stream meaning they only move it if the body sees a need for it. When iron is
taken in through food it travels through the digestive system down to the small intestine in the form of
Fe3+ (from plant matter) or Fe2+ (from meat). If it is the form 3+ then it is turned into the

Helping America s Inner City Youth
Inner city youth are the children who live in the heart of America s largest, most poverty stricken

most likely age group to commit a crime in Detroit and the surrounding area ( Wayne County, 2012 ).
These crimes range from stolen property, to the most heinous of crimes, murder and rape ( Wayne

democrats rely on, due to the decrease in percentage from the 2012 election (Obama) at ninety three
percent to Hillary s poll numbers at eighty eight percent from the same demographic group. The factor
of the Civil Rights movements that shaped the world we live in today is a huge factor on why the
African American ethnicity will always lean towards the democratic view. Without that major factor
all of the electoral votes would be very different, and would look as if they would always lean more
towards a liberal or republican view. The final demographic group in the list is the income groups,

The Porsche Automotive Group Firm
The Porsche Automotive Group firm has been considered to be a benchmark of precision within the
market for decades. According to Henderson Reavis (2009), By 2007, Porsche had become the world s
most financially profitable automaker on an annual per unit basis. They then go on to mention, This is
especially impressive when considering that Porsche produces over 100,000 vehicles annually. From
Porsche s inception their focus has been place on the finer points of engineering. Sense the 1930s this
firm has been translating their expertise of engineering into the esthetic design of their vehicles. The
quality and performance that Porsche has become known for has caused the public and private
industries to consider their vehicles to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Henderson Reavis (2009), Per unit produced, Porsche records an average of $91,974,
and by 2007 their annual income capped at $9.4 billion on revenue of $10 billion. With this growth it
must be mentioned that the firm has experience some down points. For example, in the mid 1990s due
to poor production processes and a recession in the United, which seriously affect sales nearly pushed
Porsche Automotive Group into bankruptcy. In the end this led to a time when the firm was vulnerable
to takeover. Another such time would be in 2008 when the firm s business integrity would come into
question due to their actions surrounding the failed takeover of their former sub division VW.
Porsche Automotive primarily specialized in luxury and sport models. The first vehicle produced by a
Porsche subsidiary was the pre runner to the VW Beetle, the VW Type 60. The firm s leading models
during the post World War 11 (WW2), era were the 550 Spyder, 904 6 GTS, and 911 Turbo in 1955,
1964, and 1975 respectively. In more current years following the appointment of former Chief
Executive Officer (CEO), Wendelin Wiedeking Porsche s forerunning model is the 2004 Carrera GT
(Porsche Holding GmbH., 2016).
In the automotive industry there is no shortage of competition. The major competitors of Porsche
Automotive Group are many. For example, the competitors range from General Motors Corporation

Dante’s Inferno in Milton´s Paradise Lost
Many arguments have been made that Dante s Inferno glimmers through here and there in Milton s
Paradise Lost. While at first glance the two poems seem quite drastically different in their portrayal of
Hell, but scholars have made arguments that influence from Dante shines through Milton s work as
well as arguments refuting these claims. All of these arguments have their own merit and while there
are instances where a Dantean influence can be seen throughout Paradise Lost, Milton s progression of
evil and Satan are quite different from Dante. Dante s influence on Milton is noted by many scholars
and is very apparent in several instances throughout Paradise Lost, however, Milton shows a
progression of evil through his own vision of Satan and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his article, he discusses many of the authors previously mentioned such as Samuel, Hollander, and
Gurteen, and develops his own ideas about Milton s use of Dante s form of punishments. He makes
note of the fact that when Satan returns to Hell after successfully tempting Eve...he hears a universal
hiss as he and his crew transform into serpents which is clearly an allusion to that which the thieves
undergo in Cantos 24 and 25 of Dante s Inferno.
Other scholars agree that there is some flicker of Dante through Paradise Lost but argue that, although
there are instances where it seems clear of the influence, Milton and Dante s versions of Hell and
Satan are quite different.
In S. Humphreys Gurteen The Epic of The Fall of Man: A Comparative Study of Caedmon, Dante and
Milton he says, the influence of Dante s strong imagination, however, is evident throughout Paradise
Lost. It is not plagiarism, it is not imitation, it is the effect that must necessarily follow from the
contact of one powerful imagination, strong intellect, and deeply erudite mind, on that of another, in
many respects, his equal. (Gurteen, 383) While he explores

Nietzsche Vs Kant
Most importantly, similar to Spinoza before him, Nietzsche is a naturalist and a determinist. People
are not favored over different creatures rather, similar to them, we are a piece of a causal web that
contains the entire universe. Where different scholars talk about the opportunity of the human will,
Nietzsche discloses to us that the will is neither free nor unfree, yet rather solid or frail. For Simon
Blackburn he was the primary thinker to attempt to acclimatize Darwinism. Nietzsche s The
Genealogy of Morals is an activity in creature brain research , considering (in Nietzsche s own
particular words) the physiology and developmental history of living beings and ideas. In various
other focal works Nietzsche holds onto science as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kant considers us to be following up on the premise of reasons. Being the determinist he is, and taking
the perspective on human instinct he does, Nietzsche can have no truck with this. We are not generally
cognizant deliberators: rather, he lets us know, by a long shot the best some portion of our soul s
action stays oblivious and unfelt. (The Gay Science, p333.) Knobe and Leiter make the surprising
stride of seeing to what degree late exploratory discoveries in brain research bolster either Nietzsche
or Kant. They have little trouble in demonstrating that Nietzsche is to a great extent vindicated.
Generally we are not levelheaded practitioners: the view that we pick our activities from a point of
view of deliberative separation is by all accounts a Kantian myth. There seems, by all accounts, to be
no broad agreement between our mentalities and convictions, and our activities as a result, we say a
certain something, yet do another. As opposed to representing reasons, we tend to act, and design
reasons thereafter. In Nietzschean terms, the body demonstrations, and, f illed as it is with apparitions
and will o the wisps, the mind then dishonestly appropriates that activity for its own particular
justificatory purposes. As a rule, Nietzsche takes take pleasure in demonstrating to us how we cheat

Primary Effusion Lymphoma
Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is caused by clonal expansion of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8;
also known as Kaposi s sarcoma associated herpesvirus) infected B cells (Nador et al., 1996). HHV8
is an oncogenic herpesvirus that pathogenically infects endothelial cells and B lymphocytes. Besides,
PEL is also implicated in the pathogenesis of Kaposi s sarcoma and multicentric Castleman s disease
(Carbone et al., 2009; Cai et al., 2010).
The replicative cycle of HHV8 exists as latency and lytic replication. During latency only a restricted
subset of viral transcripts is expressed, (including LANA, v FLIP, and v cyclin) that contribute to
HHV8 associated malignancies by the manipulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis (Cesarman et
al., 1995; Cai ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are ample evidences that show potential chemotherapeutic efficacy of EGCG against cancers of
the skin, lung, breast, colon, liver, stomach and prostate (Kanwar et al., 2012). EGCG is auto oxidized
in both cells and culture media, and the oxidized EGCG induces apoptosis in cells. Recent studies
demonstrate that EGCG can induce the preferential death in cancer cells is due to the cancer specific
induction of ROS (reactive oxygen species) (Min et al., 2012). EGCG was also shown to block EBV
induced transformation and the expression of viral lytic proteins (Chang et al., 2003; Choi et al.,
2009). However, the effects of EGCG on PEL cells and HHV8 replication in PEL cells have not yet
been reported.
In this study, we investigated the antitumor and antiviral activity of EGCG against human primary
effusion lymphoma cells. Our data demonstrate that EGCG induces cell death of PEL cells via a
mechanism involving generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We also examined the effects of
EGCG on HHV8 replication and reactivation. Even though EGCG induced ROS generation in PEL
cells, it reduced the production of progeny virus from PEL cells without causing HHV8 reactivation.
These results suggest that EGCG may represent a novel strategy for the treatment of HHV8 infection
and HHV8 associated

St. Louis, When Everything Changed
KIDNAPPED?! It was a normal afternoon at a festival, in St. Louis, when everything changed.(31) It
was a 45 minute drive to the festival, but it was all worth it. When we got there, my family, we sat
down and found out what we were going to do for the day.(31) We were a family on a mission today.
(1) First we went on the merry go round and then the ferris wheel. Then we walked around and went
to some booths to buy things. After that we went to my favorite part, apple picking, I loved eating
them most of all because they were so fresh and sweet and juicy and perfect!(30) After that it was
about lunchtime and we were all starving. There was so much to chose, I could never pick, never. (29).

That s where stupidity started and then I sat down and cried some more. Then after seeing many cars
drive by, one stopped and a woman walked towards me. She was very pretty and seemed nice, she
asked me what my name was and if I knew my moms number, which of course I didn t know. So she
told me that she would help me find my mom, but she told me that I had to to get in the car. So I did
second step of stupidity, when I got in the car there was 3 girls in the back and 2 more beside me. I
was probably one of the most awkward moments in my life because Super Buddies, the movie about
the dogs was on the little screen and I didn t know the people, they were all staring at me like I had 9
heads. When we got there she took me to the corn maze and I didn t see them, that was the moment I
realized that I was an orphan. She told me to come with her to look around some more and as we
turned around I heard someone call my name. To my surprise, it was Kylie, grandma, mom, and dad
all standing there! I was ecstatic to see them, it felt like an eternity since I had seen them. As my wise,

Racism At The University Of Mississippi
Imagine being a student of low economic status that has always dreamed of going to a world
renowned university but the stench of racism still looms at the well known college. The racism
displayed at this university is undeniable and very visible which in result scares away many diverse
students. Colleges claim to be diverse but with the lack of minorities due to the recognizable racism
issues and problems this proposes an important matter. Racism at The University of Mississippi can be
solved by raising awareness of racial problems and also the increase of mandatory diversity classes.
The University of Mississippi has its share of racial issues, which result in bad media coverage and
lessening the number of diverse students even more. The University of Mississippi has recently had an
incident involving race which ended with a protest and the voluntary withdrawal of a student. The use
of the peaceful protest made the University become aware of the severity of the racial comment. The
use of protests are to demand that colleges be aware and to demand punishment for the racial crime
committed. Peaceful Protest usage seem to result in positive outcomes such as within the situation at
the University of Missouri. This situation involved racial inequality and the lack of action from
university authorities (Rhoden). The unfair treatment of a minority and lack of punishment for the
racial matter caused the students to begin protesting. Regular students began protesting but with

Essay about Adolescent Substance Abuse
Adolescent Substance Abuse
Adolescent substance abuse continues to be epidemic in American society it crosses geographic,
economic, gender, racial, and ethnic lines. In addition, more than a decade of national, state, and local
prevention efforts have been minimally effective. It is a major problem that continues to escape our
control.
Nearly 9 out of 10 high school seniors in America report that they have experimented with alcohol.
Within this group, 3 out of 10 report alcohol abuse (defined as the consumption of five or more drinks
in a row at least once during the past two weeks). Three out of four teens report a pattern of regular
drinking, and more than 100,000 children aged 10 or 11 report that they get drunk once a week. ...

Alcohol experimentation increases from 6 to 17 percent between the fourth and sixth grades
In addition to the above pattern of actual use, a time bomb of skepticism and disregard exists in the
value system of today s adolescent peer group. Researchers report disbelief among adolescents
regarding physiological and psychological dangers associated with substance use.
Peer group disapproval of alcohol and other drug use is also decreasing. That is to say, the teens who
use and abuse alcohol and other drugs are feeling quite bulletproof. Those peers who are non users
confront abusers less frequently now about both their behaviors and beliefs.
The picture painted is not a pretty one. Teens are experimenting with and abusing addictive substances
in epidemic proportion, and their primary frame of reference other adolescents are reinforcing this
behavior. The best prevention efforts of schools and communities have not significantly impacted
alcohol and other drug use or the belief system that supports continued use for this population.
Compounding all of the above is the impact of managed care on treatment opportunities for those
teens needing traditional inpatient rehabilitation treatment and reasonable aftercare follow through. As
late as the early 90s, traditional inpatient treatment for substance abuse was 28 days with a significant
aftercare component that allowed for involvement of family as well as teen in treatment.

When Is Human Cloning Wrong
In February 1997, the scientific world was forever changed by the announcement of the birth of Dolly
the Sheep, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell (Jones 160). For the first time in medical
history, science allowed for the possibility of human cloning. With this development came the concern
that scientists would not only speculate about human cloning, but actually seek to attempt it. Such a
prospect generates ethical unease from both the public and Christian community. From a Christian
perspective, human cloning creates concerns for the well being of a cloned child or embryo and usurps
God s plan for human dominion. Human cloning would not be compatible with Christian ethics. In
this essay, any reference to the word clone may be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therapeutic cloning holds the potential to treat illnesses like heart and kidney disease, but the methods
require that human embryos be destroyed for the benefit of others (Hansen Schotsman 76). The Bible
directly states that killing is a sin (NIV Bible, Exodus 20:13). Although some may argue that using an
embryo for medicine is not murder, therapeutic cloning create embryos (the very first stage of
humanness) for the sole purpose of harvesting the stem cells, thus ending the budding life of said
embryo. This process certainly reflects a form of killing, even if it is only the destruction of an
incredibly early human form. Additionally, taking advantage of human embryos disobeys Jesus
command to love one another (NIV Bible, John 13:34). Jones states that therapeutic cloning
[undermines] the welfare and dignity of human embryos, which as the weakest and most vulnerable of
human beings should under no circumstances be experimented upon (174). No situation could justify
the exploitation of human embryos for the medicinal benefits of therapeutic

The Salvation Army but administered locally, aims to provide gifts for children in need. SIU
Edwardsville s Student Government made the program at the school open to students, faculty, staff

In previous years, the children opened their presents at the celebration, but that changed this year.
Parents who can t get their kids gifts want to do that, and some kids believe in Santa, which is
awesome, Manibusan explained. So we took the gifts and put them where the kids couldn t see them,
and while they were having fun, the parents could take them to the car. That way they could give it to
them on Christmas like any other family.
The Salvation Army distributes any remaining gifts that were not picked up at the event.
Manibusan and Connors said Student Government looks forward to putting the program on next year,
especially given this year s success. They also said they think it s important for the university.
It s so important for us to give back. It s just a good way that we can reach out and interact with our
community here, Connors said. I also think it s a good way to teach students and these organizations
that it s so important to give back. We ve been given so much by our university. They give us so many
opportunities every day. It s nice to look at that and say I ve been privileged this year and gotten so

When the products are run at a lower cost than the standard, then this produces a favorable variance.
The COGS and variance should net to the correct cost though (this is the reason the system creates the
variance).
The bigger problem here is that any inventory is likely to be overvalued because of wrong standards.
Finished goods inventory is valued at the standard cost. So if there is a lot of inventory at an inflated
cost, then the COGS is being reduced on the income statement too much because of this. If the
inventory were to be revalued at it s correct standard cost, there would be a large expense to the
income statement.
I would say he has been building inventory, more and more each quarter.

Experiment to Study the Effects of Fear and Anger on...
Summary 1 Lerner, Gonzalez, Small and Fischhoff (2003) undertook an experiment to study the
effects of fear and anger on perceived threats of terrorism. The design of the experiment was a
national field study. To acquire a nationally representative sample of American s, the researchers drew
a random sample of 1786 people, aged 13 88, from Knowledge Networks nationally representative
panel. These people were randomly assigned to complete a survey and numerous psychosocial scales.
The two psychosocial scales that the subjects had to complete were the five item anxiety subscale
(Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire) and a four item face valid Desire for Vengeance Scale.
An example of a statement in the Desire for Vengeance test is I felt a need to punish those responsible
for the recent terrorist attacks. Subjects had to rate these statements on a scale of 1(disagree) to 2
(agree.) An example statement from the anxiety test is I had difficulty falling or staying asleep.
Participants had to rate this statement from 0 (not experienced) to 5 (very often experienced). Of these
1786 participants, 927 of them completed an additional survey and psychosocial tests. 143 were
adolescents and the remainder was adults. Each of these subsamples included 49% males, and the
demographics roughly matched the census statistics. Each person was randomly assigned to one of
three emotion conditions. The emotion conditions were angry, sad and afraid. The participants had to

  • 2. Using Our Reading on Anthony Downs for a Class Discussion... In this weeks Anthony Downs reading we were able to use the knowledge we have gained about the structure of institutions so far from our discussions and texts and apply it to voting in politics. In An Economic Theory of Democracy Downs focused on the calculus behind voting and voter turnout to draw the conclusion that there is no point in voting. When Downs was explaining the reasoning behind voting he spoke of the utility income that the government provides to us; these benefits of utilities are the incentives that should determine the way that we vote and show its importance. Using the idea of looking to maximize utilities to determine how you vote was a fascinating idea to me and make me question he inefficiencies that exist in voting today that cause people to vote based on different reasons. So the irrational ways we base our voting decisions on (instead of utility) is what I primarily focus on as these voting habits show how citizens vote off superficial issues, not campaign platforms. If we are going to pay the costs of spending our time to go cast a vote, register, understand the candidate options, and pay for the gas to drive to the poles it makes sense to make the best choice you possibly can; to do so Downs recommends voting for the candidate that will provide you the most utility. I think Downs should have also included something about the benefit to society as too much personal interest and a lack of common concern will lead to personal benefit being ... And the third which is the cooling stage, in which the temperature is gradually decreased to uniformity. The clay is not fully dried when placed in the kiln. Hygroscopic water is not driven off at ordinary temperatures or even at the boiling point of water. In fact, the temperature often rises quite a bit above the boiling point before the water is completely evolved. The watersmoking is accomplished by fire in the kiln furnaces. Wood is frequently used for this purpose, to avoid sooting. In the watersmoking period it is desired to heat up the brick, evaporate and remove the moisture, and to accomplish this successfully, it is very necessary that draft be strong. The watersmoking is the most critical point in the life of the brick. The process must be carried very slowly the water in coming out of the clay may crack the surface. After the watersmoking is completed, the temperature is increase to that required in oxidation. Oxidation begins in the later stages of vitrification, but the greater part occurs between the temperatures of 800oF and 1300oF. • 5. Florence Was The Birthplace Of The Italian Renaissance The Italian Renaissance was a period in history unlike most others; this was an era of ingenuity, expansion, and enlightenment that would revolutionize both society as the people of the Renaissance knew it to be, and as the future generations of individuals across the globe understand it today. Florence held itself out to be the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, yet the people of this renaissance era never lost sight of the Greek and Roman heritage. The following essay will discuss the varying ways in which Florence was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and will provide the reader with examples that demonstrate Greco Roman ideas and practices in the Italian Renaissance. One of the most obvious examples in which Greco Roman culture was displayed in the era of the Italian Renaissance was through the works of art; and more specifically the medium of sculpture. Take for example, the piece by Donatello, Saint Mark, this piece harkens back to the artwork of the Greek culture by having the character whom is sculpted to be positioned in the contrappasto style, where the audience may view the drapery covering his body beneath, particularly his left knee as it projects forward... He is, in other words, a fully realized human form ; this technique was predominantly used by Greek artists, and was relatively abandoned by all other artists after the fall of the Greek empire to the Romans (Sayre, 2015). • 9. The Theory Of Personality Psychology 1. We are influenced by our own internal forces, forces of which we are unaware, have feelings towards, or urges we do not quite understand (Freidman, 2012, p. 17). This is the struggle that personality psychology tries to understand, how and to what extent the unconscious forces plays a role in human behavior. It is believed that people are responsible for their own actions. There is a continuous struggle with personality psychology and the comprehension of and to what extent unconscious forces play in human behavior. Meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances; if there is any reaction both are transformed (Carl Jung 1993, p.57). There are various questions that are asked about the issues in personality psychology such as, How important are social influences on the self, such as parental deprivation or excessive praise? Is the sense of self merely an inconsequential epiphenomenon or secondary perception arising from other forces that really matter? What is the core of who we are? A second core issue with the studies of personality studies is does each person require a unique approach? Gordon Allport argued that a key aspect of the study of personality must focus on the individual and thus be idiographic (p.18). To generalize an individual is a complication in itself because the personality of each person is complex in its own way so how can we generalize? Obtaining an answer to that question is still a dilemma. Allport complained ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Transition To Total War Total war breaks down the line separating combatants and non combatants through a series of ideological and social justifications that allowed for barbaric acts to be committed. A war becomes total when the nation itself must dedicate every facet of its existence as a state to the war effort. The general population being brought into the war effort brings to question their innocence, thus making them targets for the enemy. The transition from a small scale war into a total war is a gradual process, as adjusting a nation s economy and society to feed the war is a long and difficult process. The transition to total war depends mainly on the length of the war and the number of casualties. A short war would not require the kind of resources and civilian support that an expansive war would require. The Great War is often cited as being the first total war, and that is clear through the population s view of the war as well as the soldier s. A total war can only happen if nationalism and patriotism are high and on nearly all fronts nationalism is what rooted the soldiers in the trenches and gave them the determination. An accumulation of hydrogen peroxide is dangerous so as a result the body system developed a way to speed up this decomposition. Commonly called a catalyst, which speeds up the reaction. Catalysts may range from enzyme to inorganic catalysts. In this experiment this employ a heterogeneous catalysis, in which the reactants are in different phase from each other. This incident is considered as a corporate crime. A corporate crime is a crime made by a company that harms other people s lives. Sometimes they harm the ecosystem as well. However, on this case, the Coca cola bottlers did not harm the ecosystem but they hurt their own workers and the union members. Coca cola bottlers hired illegal paramilitary groups to intimidate, threaten, and kill their own workers. These paramilitary groups also threatened to lease a bomb attack on the union headquarters. All they did was to scare the lives of the union members and the workers. They also hired far right militias of the United Self Defence Forces of Colombia (AUC) to murder nine union members. Be sure to include Moses Fleetwood Walker as one of the individuals in your discussion. There was a great many ways in which sports helped to form and keep ethnic and racial identities during the time frame. Some ethnic groups used their culture s sports, and the clubs they formed, in order to resist assimilation into American culture thus keeping their own country s ethnic culture intact. While some groups made the choice to maintain their ethnic culture rather than integrate it with America s larger culture, others had no say in the matter. The group that comes to mind are the African American people. Contrary to European clubs that tended to fight inclusion African Americans wished to be integrated into the American culture but were denied due to systemic racism spanning across the country. Even when they were allowed to participate in sports it wasn t for long. • 21. Ordinary Men b Christopher Browning Essay In the book Ordinary Men, Christopher Browning tackles the question of why German citizens engaged in nefarious behavior that led to the deaths of millions of Jewish and other minorities throughout Europe. The question of what drove Germans to commit acts of genocide has been investigated by numerous historians, but unfortunately, no overarching answer for the crimes has yet been decided upon. However, certain theories are more popular than others. Daniel Goldhagen in his book, Hitler s Willing Executioners, has expounded that the nature of the German culture before the Second World War was deeply embedded in anti Semitic fervor, which in turn, acted as the catalyst for the events that would unfold into the Holocaust. Of the perpetrators, Browning mentions that many were middle aged policemen who were given a choice of whether or not they wanted to take part in killing the Jewish population in this area. The major who offered a reprieve from being involved in the slaughter was Major Trapp, of the 500 men who would be present, only a mere dozen would accept his offer. Afterwards, the slaughter began with one soldier stating I shot the child that belonged to her, because I reasoned with myself that after all without its mother the child could not live any longer; so to speak, soothing to my conscience to release children unable to live without their mothers. (Browning 73) It is at this point that Browning proceeds to put forth his argument as to why he believes what he postulated in his theory. He uses this scene to catapult himself into an argument of why anti Semitism was not the main driving force behind the killing. Years later, once the soldiers were interrogated and the soldier recounted this scene to Browning and others, there was a glaring omission, and that was of anti Semitism as a driving force to kill the Jews. Browning highlights this important part of the discussion with the former soldiers as indicating that their sole motivation was not just hatred ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. The Rise Of Democracy Throughout Europe Essay The Rise of Democracy in Europe The rise of democracy within Europe was vital to the importance of the individual, and was marked by a transition from the governing by one feudal lord, to the governing by an elected official. This transition brought change not only to humanistic thinking, but also enabled mankind to have basic human rights which improved life for the country s citizens. This shift of thinking to the rights of individuals was spurred by the Protestant Reformation and the creation of the social contract which enabled a perfect atmosphere for the rise of democracy within Europe. During the feudal system, military lords ruled the people with little regard for human rights. The people were used only as pawns for the wellbeing of the feudal system and were seen as such, but with the rise of an economy based on money instead of land, the feudal system began to rapidly decline. As the feudal system dwindled away, the individual rights of man increased with the rise of the market economy, which in turn propelled the spirit of democracy within the people (International Center for Peace and Development ). While money began to circulate within this new type of economy, the financial stability of the monarchs began to collapse, while the merchant class was becoming wealthy. This transition of wealth tore down the stronghold that had suppressed the population during the feudal system, and allowed the wealthy merchant power to become important political figures. ... • 24. Thomas Hobbes Leviathan Essay A state of nature is a hypothetical state of being within a society that defines such a way that particular community behaves within itself. English philosopher Thomas Hobbes proclaimed that, A state of nature is a state of war. By this, Hobbes means that every human being, given the absence of government or a contract between other members of a society, would act in a war like state in which each man would be motivated by desires derived solely with the intention of maximizing his own utility. He claims that acts of kindness, charity and benevolence are always actions that the performer believes will result in a beneficial consequence for himself. The most highly organized social network is called a commonwealth, a web of contracts between members of a community, which according to Hobbes is synonymous to the formation of an entirely new person of which each individual is but a working part (Leviathan 2, 17). Hence the title of Hobbes most famous work, Leviathan, which is a sea monster that lives off of the sea of individuals. And who is to rule this commonwealth? Hobbes answers that there needs to be a sovereign, to judge and enforce the laws of the contracts (Leviathan 2, 18). This sovereign, who is either chosen by the creators of the covenant (institution) or who forces people under his rule (acquisition) has the final rule in enforcing the laws. Essentially what Hobbes is saying by all of this is that human beings are not fit to govern themselves. The notion of the social contract serves the purpose of saving us from ourselves because, according to Hobbes, humans are not able to do that on their own. The idea of acting on behalf of the common good is, while comprehensible in theory, impossible for humans to execute. In criticizing Hobbes argument, it is extremely important to understand that the very theory of the state of nature is purely arbitrary. Such a state has never existed. While Hobbes states that the idea of a state of nature is hypothetical, a certain validity must be denied in the absence of evidence. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many parts of the body, including red blood cells, require iron in order for the body to function normally. Only specific amounts of iron are absorbed by the body to maintain homeostasis. However, iron is a very toxic mineral so if there is too much iron stored in the body, it can lead to serious consequences. People that suffer from haemochromatosis, a hereditary iron disorder, are unable to regulate the amount of iron absorbed from their diet. Almost all iron in the intestine is absorbed into the blood stream and because the human body has no major way to rid of excess iron, it is stored in organs and joints of the body where it can cause serious harm. Iron homeostasis is controlled though a negative feedback loop that involves hormones, including Hepcidin, which are released to control the absorption of iron. With haemochromatosis, the production of these hormones is affected. Over time, the build up of iron has a serious effect on cells in the body which can lead to other fatal diseases or even premature death. It is vital that the body contains a stable amount of iron. This level of iron is regulated through iron homeostasis. On average, people take in 10 to 20 mg of iron a day but only absorb 10%. Usually around 1mg of iron is also lost each day meaning the gain of iron equals the loss. This maintains iron in the body at a stable level. Iron and many other minerals are absorbed through enterocytes, absorbing cells that make up the small intestine. These cells are the regulators for how much iron is moved into the blood stream meaning they only move it if the body sees a need for it. In 1989 Kevorkian heard the story of David Rivlin, a 38 year old Michigan man who had become a quadriplegic at 19, and had been reduced to needing a respirator after a failed spinal surgery. Rivlin wanted to be taken off life support, and when Kevorkian heard of his story, he worked on helping him commit suicide (Betzold, 1993). Kevorkian designed and built his Thanatron (Greek for death machine ), which he built for $30 using parts that he found at garage sales (Garsten, 1999). However, Rivlin refused Kevorkian s help and used another doctor to remove life support. For the democrats they had leading nominee Hillary Clinton who was a former Secretary of State, and on the republican side they had a very wealthy real estate nominee named Donald Trump. The voting behavior throughout this election stayed similar to years past, and accordingly fifty eight percent of eligible voters hit the polls. With that being said there were similar demographic groups voting for the same political parties. The demographic groups which played a significant role was the White Evangelical Christian which partake in the religion spectrum. The African American group has leaned towards the democratic vote since John F Kennedy and Lyndon B Johnson, this extreme change of voting occurred during the Civil Rights movement when both of these men were outlawing public discrimination, and garnering 94% of the black vote (University of California, 1). This demographic group is rapidly growing due to the fact that it is an ethnicity, and that they have always voted democrat for the beliefs and role the democrats have played in order to better the specific race. The 2016 election proved once again to be a great success for the democrats when it came time for the African American support, this is shown through the astounding eighty eight percent vote for Hillary Clinton. The African American vote is a very crucial poll that the democrats rely on, due to the decrease in percentage from the 2012 election (Obama) at ninety three percent to Hillary s poll numbers at eighty eight percent from the same demographic group. The factor of the Civil Rights movements that shaped the world we live in today is a huge factor on why the African American ethnicity will always lean towards the democratic view. Without that major factor all of the electoral votes would be very different, and would look as if they would always lean more towards a liberal or republican view. For example, in the mid 1990s due to poor production processes and a recession in the United, which seriously affect sales nearly pushed Porsche Automotive Group into bankruptcy. In the end this led to a time when the firm was vulnerable to takeover. Another such time would be in 2008 when the firm s business integrity would come into question due to their actions surrounding the failed takeover of their former sub division VW. While at first glance the two poems seem quite drastically different in their portrayal of Hell, but scholars have made arguments that influence from Dante shines through Milton s work as well as arguments refuting these claims. All of these arguments have their own merit and while there are instances where a Dantean influence can be seen throughout Paradise Lost, Milton s progression of evil and Satan are quite different from Dante. Dante s influence on Milton is noted by many scholars and is very apparent in several instances throughout Paradise Lost, however, Milton shows a progression of evil through his own vision of Satan and ... Other scholars agree that there is some flicker of Dante through Paradise Lost but argue that, although there are instances where it seems clear of the influence, Milton and Dante s versions of Hell and Satan are quite different. In S. Humphreys Gurteen The Epic of The Fall of Man: A Comparative Study of Caedmon, Dante and Milton he says, the influence of Dante s strong imagination, however, is evident throughout Paradise Lost. People are not favored over different creatures rather, similar to them, we are a piece of a causal web that contains the entire universe. Where different scholars talk about the opportunity of the human will, Nietzsche discloses to us that the will is neither free nor unfree, yet rather solid or frail. For Simon Blackburn he was the primary thinker to attempt to acclimatize Darwinism. Knobe and Leiter make the surprising stride of seeing to what degree late exploratory discoveries in brain research bolster either Nietzsche or Kant. They have little trouble in demonstrating that Nietzsche is to a great extent vindicated. Generally we are not levelheaded practitioners: the view that we pick our activities from a point of view of deliberative separation is by all accounts a Kantian myth. There seems, by all accounts, to be no broad agreement between our mentalities and convictions, and our activities as a result, we say a certain something, yet do another. As opposed to representing reasons, we tend to act, and design reasons thereafter. • 43. Primary Effusion Lymphoma Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is caused by clonal expansion of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8; also known as Kaposi s sarcoma associated herpesvirus) infected B cells (Nador et al., 1996). HHV8 is an oncogenic herpesvirus that pathogenically infects endothelial cells and B lymphocytes. Besides, PEL is also implicated in the pathogenesis of Kaposi s sarcoma and multicentric Castleman s disease (Carbone et al., 2009; Cai et al., 2010). The replicative cycle of HHV8 exists as latency and lytic replication. During latency only a restricted subset of viral transcripts is expressed, (including LANA, v FLIP, and v cyclin) that contribute to HHV8 associated malignancies by the manipulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis (Cesarman et al., 1995; Cai ... There are ample evidences that show potential chemotherapeutic efficacy of EGCG against cancers of the skin, lung, breast, colon, liver, stomach and prostate (Kanwar et al., 2012). EGCG is auto oxidized in both cells and culture media, and the oxidized EGCG induces apoptosis in cells. Recent studies demonstrate that EGCG can induce the preferential death in cancer cells is due to the cancer specific induction of ROS (reactive oxygen species) (Min et al., 2012). EGCG was also shown to block EBV induced transformation and the expression of viral lytic proteins (Chang et al., 2003; Choi et al., 2009). However, the effects of EGCG on PEL cells and HHV8 replication in PEL cells have not yet been reported. In this study, we investigated the antitumor and antiviral activity of EGCG against human primary effusion lymphoma cells. Our data demonstrate that EGCG induces cell death of PEL cells via a mechanism involving generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We also examined the effects of EGCG on HHV8 replication and reactivation. Even though EGCG induced ROS generation in PEL cells, it reduced the production of progeny virus from PEL cells without causing HHV8 reactivation. These results suggest that EGCG may represent a novel strategy for the treatment of HHV8 infection and HHV8 associated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In addition, more than a decade of national, state, and local prevention efforts have been minimally effective. It is a major problem that continues to escape our control. Nearly 9 out of 10 high school seniors in America report that they have experimented with alcohol. Within this group, 3 out of 10 report alcohol abuse (defined as the consumption of five or more drinks in a row at least once during the past two weeks). Alcohol experimentation increases from 6 to 17 percent between the fourth and sixth grades In addition to the above pattern of actual use, a time bomb of skepticism and disregard exists in the value system of today s adolescent peer group. Researchers report disbelief among adolescents regarding physiological and psychological dangers associated with substance use. Peer group disapproval of alcohol and other drug use is also decreasing. That is to say, the teens who use and abuse alcohol and other drugs are feeling quite bulletproof. Those peers who are non users confront abusers less frequently now about both their behaviors and beliefs. The picture painted is not a pretty one. Teens are experimenting with and abusing addictive substances in epidemic proportion, and their primary frame of reference other adolescents are reinforcing this behavior. The best prevention efforts of schools and communities have not significantly impacted alcohol and other drug use or the belief system that supports continued use for this population. Compounding all of the above is the impact of managed care on treatment opportunities for those teens needing traditional inpatient rehabilitation treatment and reasonable aftercare follow through. As late as the early 90s, traditional inpatient treatment for substance abuse was 28 days with a significant aftercare component that allowed for involvement of family as well as teen in treatment. ... When Is Human Cloning Wrong In February 1997, the scientific world was forever changed by the announcement of the birth of Dolly the Sheep, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell (Jones 160). For the first time in medical history, science allowed for the possibility of human cloning. With this development came the concern that scientists would not only speculate about human cloning, but actually seek to attempt it. Such a prospect generates ethical unease from both the public and Christian community. Therapeutic cloning holds the potential to treat illnesses like heart and kidney disease, but the methods require that human embryos be destroyed for the benefit of others (Hansen Schotsman 76). The Bible directly states that killing is a sin (NIV Bible, Exodus 20:13). Although some may argue that using an embryo for medicine is not murder, therapeutic cloning create embryos (the very first stage of humanness) for the sole purpose of harvesting the stem cells, thus ending the budding life of said embryo. This process certainly reflects a form of killing, even if it is only the destruction of an incredibly early human form. Additionally, taking advantage of human embryos disobeys Jesus command to love one another (NIV Bible, John 13:34).
