Cultural Destruction
Development of society has forced the Native culture to vanish due to the break their tradition has
undergone in the past. The Natives were forced to adapt the white tradition thinking it would benefit
them in the long run. Both The Loons by Margaret Laurence and Compatriots by Emma Lee Warrior
portray similar messages about the Natives. The main characters Hilda and Vanessa represent
ignorance because of their stereotypical nature towards the culture. However, as Vanessa matures she
goes through a realization and understands the sorrow and pain of Piquette and her tradition other than
herself. Vanessa s final understanding of Piquette s life and culture ... Show more content on

The significance of her father s effort becomes valuable to Vanessa when she returns to Diamond Lake
and sees the changes. The small pier which my father had built was gone, and in its place there was a
large and solid pier built by the government, for Galloping Mountain was now a national park, and
Diamond Lake had been renamed Lake Wapakata, for it was felt that an Indian name would have a
greater appeal to tourists (Laurence 119). The government s idealization of the lake shows how their
ignorance connects with young Vanessa visualizing of Piquette as the daughter of the forest .
Although, Vanessa s knowledge of Piquette s life is much clearer, she still doesn t understand the
Native culture. Vanessa also realizes that trying to gain more knowledge and understanding about the
Native culture through Piquette won t get her anywhere because Piquette is as clueless as her. She
accepts that her understanding towards the tradition is not going anywhere further than what the white
society views it. However, Vanessa acknowledges the effects the white society has done to the
Tonnerres family and the Natives. Piquette had the mindset of an adult while growing up due to the
struggles her family has undergone. The mother s not there, my father replied. She took off a few
years back. Can t say I blame her. Piquette cooks for them, and she says Lazarus would never do
anything for himself as long as she s there (Laurence

Politeness Theory and Its Application in Arabic
Introduction People have different ways to express politeness and they usually use a range of different
linguistic expressions to do so, depending on the relationship with the addressee. This research will
explain Browns and Levinson s politeness theory and will recognize how universal this theory is and
weather it can be applied on Japanese language taking into account the difference in cultures. Brown
and Levinson s theory of Politeness and how it applies in Arabic: Brown and Levinson`s theory is
mainly based on three principle notions: face, face threatening act (FTA), and politeness strategies
(Bowe amp; Martin 2009, p. 27). Brown and Levinson s concept of face was derived from Goffman
(1972 p.5): The term face may be defined as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The seriousness of the (FTA) can be evaluated or measured through these three factors: (Holmes 2006,
p. 687). That means people tend to avoid any arguments, try to respect other s thoughts, and maintain
a pleasant relationship with other people by implementing politeness strategies in the conversations.
This can happen for example by softening a request to match the addresser and the addressees needs
can save the positive or the negative face of both interactants as face can be lost, preserved, or
enhanced and that can be monitored in the conversation (Bowe amp; Martin, 2007, p. 28) Japanese
politeness: Japanese people are mainly shy and they are also private, for the Japanese society privacy
is very important and it is considered as one of the main feature for their society, we can see that from
the designs of the windows in the houses so no one can look at them, also asking plenty question is
considered rude in the society.(Coulmas, 2005) Parents in the Japanese society do not talk or practice
their passion and love in front of their children and the adults do not talk and they do not like to be
asked about their private life. Japanese people tend not to socialised with strangers if they did not have

Magical Realism and Unrequited Love in Isabel Allende’s...
Throughout Isabel Allende s Story, The Little Heidelberg , love and magical realism can be observed.
There are plentiful details in describing the physical characteristics of the setting and the people and
scenery within the tale. These techniques reinforce the theme, of which is unrequited love.
The Little Heidelberg is the story of a small dance hall. The customers of The Little Heidelberg are
typically older men and women, many of whom are foreigners who cannot speak English. One of
these is El Capitán, a retired Finnish sea captain, who has been dancing with niña Eloísa, a lovely
Russian woman, weekly for forty years. They have never spoken to each other because of language
barriers. One day some Scandinavian tourists come to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

important to take into account when viewing this story. This stew helps to lighten ones mood; the
people present at The Little Heidelberg are in good spirits and sensuality can be observed amongst the
guests. This establishment has been around for numerous years. There is refuse of the past and the
uniforms of the musicians have faded. The median age of the women present at The Little Heidelberg
is seventy. These women have been coming there for years, women such as Eloisa, who never missed
a day. The clientele is composed of European émigrés they are described as a pleasant and
uncomplicated group of people (Allende, 175). People venture to this haven to dance and spend time
which is described by the quote ...language is secondary at The Little Heidelberg, for no one comes
here to talk (Allende, 176). It truly is such a place. El Capitán cannot communicate with anyone at The
Little Heidelberg, including [Eloisa] the one he has loved for forty years.
El Capitán is a tall and elegant man. He is a physical contrast to Eloísa s meek, gentile person. He is
an expert on old ships and sea lanes which is brought up again after his proposal to Eloísa. The way he

Confucius s A Perfect Government
A perfect government does not exist in this world, but a just one is always welcomed. The literary
work Analects by Confucius shows the perspective of a philosopher and his version of an ideal China.
Confucius is a philosopher that wrote his philosophy based on the world that surrounds him, and
influence from the Zhou dynasty. One of the major subjects Confucianism addresses is China s
politics and government during Confucius s time. Confucius tries to offer solutions through his
philosophy to better China and its people. Confucius s Analects is a critique of the dire rulers and
China s government, and tries to provide solutions to better China.
Confucius lived in China during the Spring and Autumn period, which is 571 449 BCE. During this
period China s government and its rulers were corrupt, and because of this Confucius s philosophy
heavily revolves at trying to fix the current problem his society faces by trying to issue solutions
within his philosophy. One of the major themes that Confucius always goes back to when talking
about how China can become better is to go back to tradition. Tradition to Confucius meant not
following mystical entities or abstract ideas, but to follow a simple system like the times of early
China. Confucius thinks that the emperors such as Yao and Shun are examples of great leaders of the
past, and the current government should follow their example (Christian Violatti, cited in Ancient
History Encyclopedia 2013). These rulers ruled without

Organisational Structure Is a More Effective Focus of Hrm
1. Introduction
Human Resource Management (HRM) has become an integral and growing area in most
business sectors, regardless of how big, or small the company or firm is. Moreover,
company s today rely heavily on HRM practices to function at peak Organisational level and
also sustain a high level of competitiveness, stability, employee satisfaction, and the overall
well being of the organisation. So where should the focus of HRM activity be? The statement
in question, that ‘Organisational Structure ( the physical hierarchy of the company ) is a
more effective ( Inclined to produce better results for the firm ) focus of HRM activity than
Organisational Culture ( the customs, beliefs, practices, traditions, values and ... Show more content

For Organisational Structure to function effectively it must have appropriate staff to manage it,
a common concern for HR managers. The management style of the organisation has a big
impact on how the firm operates and effectively on the decision making process,
communication and the overall functionality of the firm. Here, HRM activity plays a vital role
in ensuring effective interaction and understanding of two way communication both from
senior level management down the structure to lower lever subordinates and from subordinates
back to senior management. Communication is again the key to a successful organisation,
without it there is little or no interaction between work groups, which could predominantly
lead to a unorganized and dysfunctional organisation. (Gowland and Aiken, 2003, p.43) believe
there is a strong need for a structure that is pro active rather than reactive in its management
style , that encourages independent decision making and places emphasis on high levels of
communication.
If there happens to be a problem within the organisation, structural modifications may not
be the most appropriate means of correcting it. Within an organisation there is structure, but
flowing through this structure is Organisational Culture. These customs, beliefs, practices,
traditions, values and ideologies ( Nankervis, Compton and Baird, 2002, p. 57 ) set,

Existentialism In The Renaissance Shakespeare
Centuries before existentialism came into existence there was the Renaissance, a thriving movement
that dealt with matters of man. It taught man to think for and about his own self and not blindly follow
the paths of old. Reality for them was what they saw and not what religion told them to be. Since, like
existentialism, it too based its ideas on an individual, one can say that Renaissance was the first stitch
to the existentialist thinking.
Therefore, this thesis plucks out a character from the most renowned writer of the sixteenth century
i.e. William Shakespeare for its first specimen. Harold Bloom (2003) claims that
Internalization of self is one of Shakespeare s greatest inventions

Don Marquis s Lesson Of The Moth
The suicide of the moth, the immolation on a cigar lighter, is a literal presentation of his ideas for life.
In the poem Lesson of the Moth by Don Marquis, two conflicting opinions about life face each other.
There is a cockroach named archy that thinks you should live your life as long as you can, and an
unnamed moth that wants to live life to the fullest, even if it means dying early. The lesson in this
poem is that there are several conflicting ideas to everything. Throughout the story, archy and the
moth show their conflicting views on life. One excerpt where archy shows his views is i do not agree
with him myself i would rather have half the happiness and twice the longevity . What archy is saying
is that he would like to live a long life, even if he is not as happy as someone who lives a short live but
is very happy during their life. The moth thinks of it differently. He says plenty of [sense] he answered
but at times we get tired of using it and crave beauty and excitement fire is beautiful and we know that
if we get too close it will kill us but what does that matter it is better to be happy for a moment ...

One area where the author uses this literary technique is he went and immolated himself on a patent
cigar lighter i do not agree with him myself i would rather have half the happiness and twice the

the moth think. Right after showing the moth following his beliefs and setting himself ablaze, he puts
archy talking about how he disagrees with his beliefs that he just killed himself for. These different
views are very apparent placed so close to each other. The reason that he juxtaposed these two views
was to show how different they are and how extreme the moth s views were compared to archy s, and
also to show that there were at least 2 extremely differing opinions about

The Species Corvus Corax
The species Corvus corax is well known and recognized as one of the smartest animals in the world.
Many studies have been conducted in investigating sophistication of its cognitive processes in recent
years. A good number of them support this withstanding belief of high intelligence. Others reveal gaps
in factors of their intelligence that were not previously presumed.. Pfuhl (2012), Schied Bugnyar
(2008) and Boeckle Bugnayr (2012) studies show very proficient spatial reasoning and memory in
ravens. On the contrary, other studies like Scholegl et al. (2008) and Albiach Serrano et al. (2012)
display a lack of aptitude in factors like understanding context and patterns compared to other
cognitively gifted animals. Although even with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the recent decades, this theory of high intelligence has gone under much research and
experimentation to intent to establish the extent of corvid cognition. Multiple studies have been
conductive on Corvus corax examining its cognitive abilities. They have related these abilities to the
species phenology and evolution along with other cognitively gifted animals, such as apes (van Horik
et al. 2012). While the belief of high intelligence remains relatively true for certain cognitive aspects
such as spatial reasoning and memory, these corvids prove less competent in the areas like contextual
understanding and problem solving with patterns.
Literature Review
Well Developed Cognitive Processes Reasoning. Spatial reasoning plays into the concept of
intelligence and it aids to the survival of organisms. It is useful to know one s orientation in the world
and being able to draw inferences from another object s or organisms orientation. In a 2012 study
conducted by Gerit Pfuhl, ravens were tested in their spatial and causal reasoning based on pulling a
set of strings. The major factor of this was which of the strings they decided to pull. The procedure
was to attach meat and/or a weighted object (i.e., a small block of wood) to strings, alternating the
position of the food and wood in the string and putting the strings at a certain height. The strings were

Analysis Of Lou Kline In A Visit From The Goon Squad
In a novel that jumps between periods of time and interchanges multiple characters, Lou Kline is one
of the only consistent elements throughout the entirety of A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer
Egan. Lou is first portrayed hostily as a abhorrent, egocentric man who fears growing older. In the
next chapter, the reader s perception of Lou is altered from a sleazy man to a more paternal figure, and
the reader understands that while Lou has done despicable things, he is not completely immoral.
Altered again, the final image of Lou is that of pity as a dying man, his failures are recounted and he is
therefore at his most vulnerable. Egan s non linear structure of the novel allows the reader to see
multiple sides of Lou Kline through different character perspectives, and in the end amplify the
merciless effect time has on a destructive urge to remain youthful and assert dominance to win at
everything. Lou s youth is characterized by in the moment actions, an abundance of girls, and reckless
living. Afraid of aging, he spends his whole life in this state of mind. Even on his deathbed he invites
Rhea and Jocelyn, young girls from his past, to visit him in order to experience a final youthful
atmosphere. The narrator, Rhea, describes Lou as having a surfer s face, connoting perceived inward
youth while people looking at him would see his face had gone a little draggy under the eyes (Egan
60). He shows many signs of childishness and carelessness when he ignore[s] the rule to stay seated
while the jeep is moving and again when he sees lions and proceeds to climb out of his seat with the
others and they jam their upper upper halves through the open roof (Egan 66). This carelessness shows
a lack of a sense of responsibility as not only an adult but also a father, as evidenced in his lack of care
for Rolph s true personality and his passive aggressive attitude to Charlie as she defies him. When
Charlie giggles and Lou asks her what s so funny, he mocks her answer: Life! Lou snorts. How old are
you? Ironically this response is so childish that it makes the reader question the mental age of Lou
himself. While Lou does show a more maternal side in this chapter, it is overtaken by his

Gabrielle Bonheur Coco Chanel
Gabrielle Bonheur Coco Chanel is one of the greatest fashion inventors of all time. In her early life as
a child, she was put in an orphanage by her father after her mother s death. Her father worked as a

himself alive. The nuns of her orphanage taught her how to sew which became a vital know how for
her career later on. To earn money to live on her own, she started a singing career at local clubs in
Vichy and Moulins where her nickname Coco began. At about 20 years of age, Chanel began a
relationship with Etienne Balsan who offered her money to help her start her career. She left Etienne
for a wealthier friend of his, Arthur Boy Chapel. Both of these men were a key ingredient in Coco s
first fashion experiment. When she opened her first shop on Paris s Rue Cambon in 1910, she sold
hats. When she began making clothes, she put a store in Deauville and one in Biarritz. Her first
successful piece of work was a dress she made from an old jersey. In 1925, she made the suit with a
tight fitted skirt and a collarless jacket, popular. Her designs were made with things from a man s
closet, but making them feminine. She also tried to make these outfits comfortable rather than the

The Courageous Man Named Beowulf
What are the challenges of the Anglo Saxon life, that Beowulf faces? The strongest competitors

Nostalgic Memories In Yusef Komunyakaa s Facing It Essay
Nostalgic Memories In Facing It Just as farmers brand their livestock in order to claim them as their
own, humans do the same when it comes to important events. There are certain moments in one s life
when an incident is so powerful, emotionally or physically, that it leaves a mark on a person forever.
The branded symbol that is left could be positive or negative, but there is no doubt that it has caused a
wave of all encompassing feeling. And although when looking back at the past the majority of our
memories tend to be viewed with a black and white perception, it is these rare occurrences when a
certain event can be so distinct that it is like experiencing it once more. This experience that was once
felt with the body and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His frequent use of techniques such as alliteration and flashback, as well as his overall construction of
the poem, easily conveys the anguish and torment that comes along with remembering something that
one has tried so hard to forget. Komunyakaa s use of alliteration has helped to slow down time, in a
way: Phrases such as My black face fades (Line 1) take a longer time to read, and therefore, one has
more time to let words sink in. Saying that the character s face is fading not only represents emotion
through word choice and diction but it allows certain words to be read with more force, which
expresses the author s idea that that word has extreme importance to the overall content and theme of
the piece. Komunyakaa also makes clear use of flashback throughout the poem: I see a booby trap s
white flash, A white vet s image floats closer to me he s lost his right arm . Literary devices such as
this one provides evidence towards the general tone of the poem: a dreary and depressing image of a
past incident. The way the poem is constructed is also confirmation that Komunyakaa wants certain
words and phrases to be prominent. His use of enjambment forces one to concentrate on certain
thoughts: I turn that way—I m inside causes one to imagine that the main character is deep inside his
train of thought; however, when reading the next line it is obvious that the literal meaning of the
phrase is that the character is

Analysis Of The Book Montana 1948 By Larry Watson
Entry one: In the beginning of Montana 1948 by Larry Watson, a vivid scene is set using imagery. The
first character we meet is the protagonist of the story, David Hayden. David is a young boy, living in
Mercer County, Montana. We are introduced to the boy s father and mother, Wesley and Gail Hayden.
Wesley is the town s sheriff who was handed down the position of the sheriff from his father, although
his true passion lies in being a lawyer. Lastly, we meet Marie Little Soldier, the caretaker of David and
housekeeper. She has recently fallen ill with pneumonia and refuses to see a doctor, but Wesley
ignores that and called his brother Frank, who is a doctor. In the first chapter, David states There might

Gail is a fantastic mother because when questioned, she does not completely shelter him, still giving
him some information. Later, The Hayden family goes to dinner at David s grandparents house, where
Gail is upset because Frank will be there. After a very awkward dinner, David goes out to play with
his favourite horse, Nutty. His grandfather also gives him a gun and lots of ammunition to kill coyotes.
He shoots at many things, but then aims for a bird and kills it, afterwards he feels ...strangely calm, as
if I had been in a state of high agitation but had now come down, my pulse returned to normal, my
breathing slowed, my vision cleared. I needed that, I thought; I hadn t even known it but I needed to
kill something, (Watson 72). He gets his anger out on an innocent creature, almost like his uncle
taking out his urges on the Native girls.
Entry #4 After shooting the magpie, David continues to ride until he sees his father and Uncle Frank.
David clenches the gun imaging that he was shooting Uncle Frank, showing his animosity toward him.
Later on David eavesdrops on his parents and learns that Frank claimed he would stop doing what he
is doing to the Natives. This answer does not satisfy Gail. The next day Marie is found dead. When
David hears of this he feels like if he had just never went home he could just hold onto what he knew
forever. The entire family was broken once again. We learn that

Samsung. The report suggests Apple is starting to think it needs a broader product portfolio to

out in the sea off the coast of Cuba. Hemingway is talking about Santigo s voyage out on the open
water. Santigo is the old man who has a young friend named Manolin who was the only one to go fish

The old man leaves to head out to sea when he tells us that the sea cannot be controlled. After days at
sea he saw dauphins and a bird, since the Santigo is lonely he holds conversations with them and is
just talking to himself. He finally gets a fish on his line and it is the Marlon, this is the fight of Santigo
s life. While he lets the Marlon drag him around the waters, it shows itself when it jumps out of the
water and is 2 feet longer then the skiff. This is the biggest Santigo has ever seen. He finally has the
Marlin worn out and is sad that he must kill this creature. While on his way back sharks attach the
Marlins meat because it s too big to fit in the skiff. Santigo kills 2 hammerhead sharks, but there were
one to many and thy devoured the Marlin. All that was left of the old man s fish was its skeleton. II.

Analysis Of The Book Wonderland, And Its Sequel
In analyzing Lewis Carroll s works Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, and its sequel, Through the
Looking Glass, studying the the illustrations is of as great importance as examining the text that they
depict. From the first sentence of Wonderland, Carroll exhibits a concern for illustrations and their
role regarding storytelling in writing, what is the use of a book , thought Alice, without pictures,
(Carroll 7). As Carroll seems to have intended, the words which comprise Wonderland and Looking
Glass are only a one facet in the reader s interpretation of the two works. Equally important as the
written text to the experience of Wonderland and Looking Glass House is illustration, and by
extension different artists interpretations of these fantastical worlds. Interpreting the Alice stories
through illustration first was Carroll himself, further increasing the interest of the relation between
image and text as well as the question of the importance of pictures to their stories. Evidently Carroll
intended the text of Alice s adventures to be accompanied with images for readers, even initially
putting in the time and effort himself to ensure their illustration, demonstrating the great concern he
had for the relationship between the text of a story and its visual depiction. However, for the first
official publication of Wonderland, Carroll enlisted artist John Tenniel to create entirely new
illustrations for the story. These new illustrations by Tenniel have become iconic

were still superstitious times in a village whose oldest inhabitant could remember the plague, carried

Life Story Of The Chief Storyteller At Sap
Life Story Of The Chief Storyteller At SAP, Julie Roehm: Being Different Like Steve Jobs Julie, we
are moving again. her father would echo those words every few years of her school life. Most kids
would have found that physical move of schools and making new friends in a new place too intense of
a change. Julie was different. She thrived on that change, taking her chances and embracing variety. In
her words, I knew nothing better. I absorbed what I saw my mom s bubbliness and my traveling
salesman dad s persona of self belief. I am from the Midwest with deep roots to a small town called
Watertown in Wisconsin. I am fifth generation in my family who was born there. For a moment, I
forgot I was speaking with one of the senior women executives at the multinational company SAP.
Her enthusiastic earthliness reverberated on the phone. I had my reasons for talking to her. Steve Jobs
reveled in working on the fringes against conventional wisdom. He took his chances for change. Yet,
there was a singular constancy in his life his innate love for bringing technology intimately closer to
people. He found the down years, after the ouster from Apple, the most nourishing in his life to
contemplate, recharge and more importantly ruminate on what is truly important. He refined his
approach and resurged with renewed vigor on what he always believed in his constancy. That yielded
spectacular results bringing us amazing products that we talk about with reverence.

Baseball And Its Impact On Baseball
Baseball was introduced to America in the 1800s. As the game of baseball started to become popular,
many people became interested in the game. Baseball fanatics fell in love with the sport, but not
everyone could play. Racial discrimination found its way to baseball when the game was first
discovered and created many controversies that prevented many colored players from playing the
game because of their skin color. This could be part of the reason why in today s culture, you do not
see many black Americans playing the game of baseball. The steady decline in black Americans
playing baseball could also be contributed to other sports like basketball and football started to
become more popular and they just simply lost interest in baseball.
The integration of baseball all started in 1947 when the black community finally had access to the
game just like everyone else. This increased the numbers of black baseball athletes and, for a while,
everyone was happy especially since Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball and opened
the doors for other black players. The numbers then started to decline when football and basketball
started to become more prominent in America. Baseball was becoming an old and slow sport, while
basketball and football caught the attention of black athletes. Baseball has become a sport that
represents older America and because of the culture change people want something different like
basketball and football. When the culture changes, so do

Literature And The English Literature Essay
Literature can briefly be defined as written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting
artistic merit; books and writings published on a particular subject or leaflets and other printed matter
used to advertise products or give advice. One of the most popular forms of literature would be
English literature. If one would look up the definition for English literature, the best descriptive
information would be that it s impression and format is over one hundred years old, and continues to
be one of the most common studied forms of art, as far as written, studied in high schools and
universities around the world. English literature is basically the study of literature that has been
written in the English language. This form of literature expands past the most common American
language and dates back to the Shakespearean and Renaissance timeline. English literature has
progressed and taken many different forms over the years and constantly evolves numerous elements
that makes it such an elaborate art. It all begins with an emotion, perception, or experience the author
may have endured or witnessed. It is the understanding of these words and elements, which causes not
only the students that are required to read said literature; but those who appreciate the true authenticity
of a well written novel or short story, to truly appreciate the purpose and importance of it all. When

Survey Report On Public Transportation
This company is the largest private employer in our metropolitan area. I was instructed by you, the
CEO, to conduct a survey to identify and collect information on how to solve the tremendous impact
our employees pose on local traffic. You will find the data I collected illustrated below, and my two
suggestions on how we can solve this problem. Figure 1 illustrates the employees carpool habits. The
graph illustrated above portrays the frequency of use of carpooling in the workforce. As you can see,
over half (64%) of the workforce has never used this method of transportation. Figure 2 illustrates the
use of public transportation. The figure above illustrates the frequency of use of public transportation

Due to the tremendous impact that our employees have on local traffic, I recommend the use of shuttle
buses for safety purposes. Since the area has many busy roads, hence leading to congestion problems,
most companies are turning to shuttle services in order to minimize risk. Offering shuttle buses has
many benefits to both the employee and employer. First, there is increased employee productivity
since the employees have a lot of spare time from avoiding congested roads. Cases of tardiness will be
reduced since all employees will have a scheduled bus picking them up daily. Employees could be
more disposed to this solution because it will allow them to save money on fuel and other expenses
such as parking. Offering commuter services could also be cost saving to the company since it will not
be required to construct a parking area or offer mileage expenses to employees with cars. These are all
rational reasons as to why the company should acquire shuttle buses for its employees. Solution 2:
Telecommuting The data illustrates that the number of employees that believe telecommuting is not an
option, is not as high as the number of employees that stated that nothing could encourage them to
take public transportation. Between telecommuting and providing subsidized bus passes, based on the
data provided above, employees would be more inclined to telecommuting. Just to name a couple of
benefits of telecommuting; employees will have improved

Spirited Away Essay
Give 110% this quote is usually uttered to athletes who are struggling to find motivation or to push
through a workout. It is pretty obviously a hyperbole. We usually over emphasize what we want our
children to learn. It seems that Miyazaki followed this pattern in his film Spirited Away, specifically in
his character Chihiro. In the story Chihiro gives 110%. She is always humble and willing to do
anything with very little personal gain involved. Chihiro is a very idealistic representation of how to
be selfless, which is not possible to apply to real life. Modern culture has a strong opinion on being
selfish versus being selfless. People who display the personality trait of being selfish are demonized,
some for good reason, but sometimes it is not possible to give the entirety of ourselves to others. If we

Look to a child for an answer. Chihiro embodies this sense of complete trust and outpouring of
oneself. Specifically represented by her willingness to go to Zeniba s house on the small chance that
she has a possibility to save Haku s life. This choice sounds like it is relatively small and should be an
easy accomplishment, but requires going on a train that runs one way and a long journey away. There
is a chance she will not make it back to her parents and go home. Now she does have some personal
gain due to her love for Haku, but the risk of never returning home displays how selfless she can be.
Chihiro is willing to throw away chances of going home on the slight change that she can save her
friend. She does not stop there, she brings along the monster, No face, who was terrorizing the bath
house. She not only does something for little gain, but changes others for the better in the process. By
bringing No face, she is bettering the world for everyone when she could have easily left him there to
continue to cause problems. The only issue is the way she is portrayed is not entirely accurate to how

Recent Changes in the Print Industry
The print industry in our society has always served as a pillar in providing mass media to society. Print
industry can trace its root back to the ancient Egyptians, China, and Europe in the first 10 centuries.
Not until the mid 1400 s did the print industry reach a pivotal transformation, which was the printing
press by Johannes Gutenberg. This allowed for faster mass production of printed materials such as the
Bible for instance. Century after century this industry evolved into a worldwide business for providing
information to the masses. In our society today, the Internet is our main source for business,
communication, getting information, etc. The Internet has evolved since first being introduced into
something everyone in a sense needs, since it can help with our lives. The print industry is currently
co existing with the Internet and digital technology industries, and the print industry has struggled and
has been forced to adapt. Our society is moving faster and getting information faster due to the
Internet and digital technology. The print industry cannot keep up with the digital age in regards to
providing information. It s that digital has surpassed print. It has many advantages and with
technology constantly growing there will be more. Characteristics of digital include: ubiquity, speed,

Descriptive Essay About Fascinating Town
The Unknown
What don t people know? People don t know or understand many things. People first make a judgment
about someone or something. They then decide whether they like or not like someone or something.
People judge, people stare, people are rude, people are mean. You wish that everyone in the world was
nice and that the world was a safe place with no bad guys . Soon you will wake up and realize the
truth, the truth about the world and the people.
The Fascinating Town
My grandparents live in Italy. I have visited them there three times know. I love it there it is so
different from here. They live in the cutest town where there are no tourists and everyone knows each
other. The town is on a slant it almost feels like you are walking down a staircase. The main part of
town has three of the best Italian places I have ever been to. In the main part of town, there is also an
old fashioned parlor shop it makes me feel like I m in a scene in an old movie. This town is so
interesting and different and that s why I love it.
THe House of all Houses My grandparent s house in Italy is also wonderful. They live just twenty
minutes away from the town. They live way up on this mountain with only four other houses up there.
To get to their house you have to take a windy dirt road while going through a ton of trees. Normally
at night instead of deer crossing, there are chinchillas which are basically wild pigs crossing. Their
house has two parts to it a guest house and their house. The houses are made of gray stone and
covered with green moss. To get to the entrance you have to go through almost like a tunnel of
flowers. Inside it is old but also modern at the same time. The original part of the house is over 600
years old. Outside they have a garden full of different vegetables, and five acres of grape vines and
olive trees. They also have a rose garden full of beautiful red, pink, and violet roses.
The Time I went Far Away The last time I went to Italy was the summer going into 8th grade.
Normally when we go to Italy we take a different trip either within Italy or somewhere close. My
grandparents are very active and love traveling so they want us to be able to experience different
places. So they

What Role Does Religion Play In The Army
The role that religion plays on a solider can be astronomical to the mental and subsequently the
physical state of a soldier. When a soldier is on the front line and fighting with their fellow soldiers in
a fire fight they need to mentally be present as well as physically for their fellow soldiers. In these
cases of being in the thick of the fighting many soldiers turn to their faith, this has a mental effect on
them, putting them in a state of mind that gives them a strength. This strength could be as little as
added confidence in the fight that keeps them grounded or as much as giving them reassurance that if
anything happens to them they have a higher power there that will help and comfort them. Religion

and wake cycles. Rosenthal, et al, notes how the pineal gland, the gland that produces melatonin, will
react to dark surroundings with drowsiness that can lead people to being lethargic (as cited in Melrose,
2015). When melatonin increases and serotonin decreases, the offset of the proteins can cause
circadian rhythms to be disrupted, which is the bodies 24 hour clock. Researcher Melrose writes that
...circadian rhythms respond to the rhythmic light dark changes that occur daily and throughout each
of the seasons. (2015). People with S.A.D. disorder normally find that their circadian rhythms are off

  • 4. The Loons Patricia Dizon Mr. Iozzo NBE 3U Friday, April 4, 2014 Cultural Destruction Development of society has forced the Native culture to vanish due to the break their tradition has undergone in the past. The Natives were forced to adapt the white tradition thinking it would benefit them in the long run. Both The Loons by Margaret Laurence and Compatriots by Emma Lee Warrior portray similar messages about the Natives. The main characters Hilda and Vanessa represent ignorance because of their stereotypical nature towards the culture. However, as Vanessa matures she goes through a realization and understands the sorrow and pain of Piquette and her tradition other than herself. Vanessa s final understanding of Piquette s life and culture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The significance of her father s effort becomes valuable to Vanessa when she returns to Diamond Lake and sees the changes. The small pier which my father had built was gone, and in its place there was a large and solid pier built by the government, for Galloping Mountain was now a national park, and Diamond Lake had been renamed Lake Wapakata, for it was felt that an Indian name would have a greater appeal to tourists (Laurence 119). The government s idealization of the lake shows how their ignorance connects with young Vanessa visualizing of Piquette as the daughter of the forest . Although, Vanessa s knowledge of Piquette s life is much clearer, she still doesn t understand the Native culture. Vanessa also realizes that trying to gain more knowledge and understanding about the Native culture through Piquette won t get her anywhere because Piquette is as clueless as her. She accepts that her understanding towards the tradition is not going anywhere further than what the white society views it. However, Vanessa acknowledges the effects the white society has done to the Tonnerres family and the Natives. The literary work Analects by Confucius shows the perspective of a philosopher and his version of an ideal China. Confucius is a philosopher that wrote his philosophy based on the world that surrounds him, and influence from the Zhou dynasty. One of the major subjects Confucianism addresses is China s politics and government during Confucius s time. Confucius tries to offer solutions through his philosophy to better China and its people. Confucius s Analects is a critique of the dire rulers and China s government, and tries to provide solutions to better China. Confucius lived in China during the Spring and Autumn period, which is 571 449 BCE. During this period China s government and its rulers were corrupt, and because of this Confucius s philosophy heavily revolves at trying to fix the current problem his society faces by trying to issue solutions within his philosophy. One of the major themes that Confucius always goes back to when talking about how China can become better is to go back to tradition. Tradition to Confucius meant not following mystical entities or abstract ideas, but to follow a simple system like the times of early China. Confucius thinks that the emperors such as Yao and Shun are examples of great leaders of the past, and the current government should follow their example (Christian Violatti, cited in Ancient History Encyclopedia 2013). It taught man to think for and about his own self and not blindly follow the paths of old. Reality for them was what they saw and not what religion told them to be. Since, like existentialism, it too based its ideas on an individual, one can say that Renaissance was the first stitch to the existentialist thinking. In the poem Lesson of the Moth by Don Marquis, two conflicting opinions about life face each other. There is a cockroach named archy that thinks you should live your life as long as you can, and an unnamed moth that wants to live life to the fullest, even if it means dying early. The lesson in this poem is that there are several conflicting ideas to everything. Throughout the story, archy and the moth show their conflicting views on life. One excerpt where archy shows his views is i do not agree with him myself i would rather have half the happiness and twice the longevity . What archy is saying is that he would like to live a long life, even if he is not as happy as someone who lives a short live but is very happy during their life. The moth thinks of it differently. • 13. Analysis Of Lou Kline In A Visit From The Goon Squad In a novel that jumps between periods of time and interchanges multiple characters, Lou Kline is one of the only consistent elements throughout the entirety of A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. Lou is first portrayed hostily as a abhorrent, egocentric man who fears growing older. In the next chapter, the reader s perception of Lou is altered from a sleazy man to a more paternal figure, and the reader understands that while Lou has done despicable things, he is not completely immoral. Altered again, the final image of Lou is that of pity as a dying man, his failures are recounted and he is therefore at his most vulnerable. Egan s non linear structure of the novel allows the reader to see multiple sides of Lou Kline through different character perspectives, and in the end amplify the merciless effect time has on a destructive urge to remain youthful and assert dominance to win at everything. Lou s youth is characterized by in the moment actions, an abundance of girls, and reckless living. Afraid of aging, he spends his whole life in this state of mind. Even on his deathbed he invites Rhea and Jocelyn, young girls from his past, to visit him in order to experience a final youthful atmosphere. The narrator, Rhea, describes Lou as having a surfer s face, connoting perceived inward youth while people looking at him would see his face had gone a little draggy under the eyes (Egan 60). He shows many signs of childishness and carelessness when he ignore[s] the rule to stay seated while the jeep is moving and again when he sees lions and proceeds to climb out of his seat with the others and they jam their upper upper halves through the open roof (Egan 66). This carelessness shows a lack of a sense of responsibility as not only an adult but also a father, as evidenced in his lack of care for Rolph s true personality and his passive aggressive attitude to Charlie as she defies him. When Charlie giggles and Lou asks her what s so funny, he mocks her answer: Life! Lou snorts. How old are you? Ironically this response is so childish that it makes the reader question the mental age of Lou himself. While Lou does show a more maternal side in this chapter, it is overtaken by his ... His frequent use of techniques such as alliteration and flashback, as well as his overall construction of the poem, easily conveys the anguish and torment that comes along with remembering something that one has tried so hard to forget. Komunyakaa s use of alliteration has helped to slow down time, in a way: Phrases such as My black face fades (Line 1) take a longer time to read, and therefore, one has more time to let words sink in. Saying that the character s face is fading not only represents emotion through word choice and diction but it allows certain words to be read with more force, which expresses the author s idea that that word has extreme importance to the overall content and theme of the piece. Komunyakaa also makes clear use of flashback throughout the poem: I see a booby trap s white flash, A white vet s image floats closer to me he s lost his right arm . Literary devices such as this one provides evidence towards the general tone of the poem: a dreary and depressing image of a past incident. The way the poem is constructed is also confirmation that Komunyakaa wants certain words and phrases to be prominent. His use of enjambment forces one to concentrate on certain thoughts: I turn that way—I m inside causes one to imagine that the main character is deep inside his train of thought; however, when reading the next line it is obvious that the literal meaning of the phrase is that the character is ... He gets his anger out on an innocent creature, almost like his uncle taking out his urges on the Native girls. David clenches the gun imaging that he was shooting Uncle Frank, showing his animosity toward him. Later on David eavesdrops on his parents and learns that Frank claimed he would stop doing what he is doing to the Natives. This answer does not satisfy Gail. The next day Marie is found dead. Analysis Of The Book Wonderland, And Its Sequel In analyzing Lewis Carroll s works Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass, studying the the illustrations is of as great importance as examining the text that they depict. From the first sentence of Wonderland, Carroll exhibits a concern for illustrations and their role regarding storytelling in writing, what is the use of a book , thought Alice, without pictures, (Carroll 7). As Carroll seems to have intended, the words which comprise Wonderland and Looking Glass are only a one facet in the reader s interpretation of the two works. Equally important as the written text to the experience of Wonderland and Looking Glass House is illustration, and by extension different artists interpretations of these fantastical worlds. Interpreting the Alice stories through illustration first was Carroll himself, further increasing the interest of the relation between image and text as well as the question of the importance of pictures to their stories. Evidently Carroll intended the text of Alice s adventures to be accompanied with images for readers, even initially putting in the time and effort himself to ensure their illustration, demonstrating the great concern he had for the relationship between the text of a story and its visual depiction. However, for the first official publication of Wonderland, Carroll enlisted artist John Tenniel to create entirely new illustrations for the story. • 32. Baseball And Its Impact On Baseball Baseball was introduced to America in the 1800s. As the game of baseball started to become popular, many people became interested in the game. Baseball fanatics fell in love with the sport, but not everyone could play. Racial discrimination found its way to baseball when the game was first discovered and created many controversies that prevented many colored players from playing the game because of their skin color. This could be part of the reason why in today s culture, you do not see many black Americans playing the game of baseball. The steady decline in black Americans playing baseball could also be contributed to other sports like basketball and football started to become more popular and they just simply lost interest in baseball. The integration of baseball all started in 1947 when the black community finally had access to the game just like everyone else. This increased the numbers of black baseball athletes and, for a while, everyone was happy especially since Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball and opened the doors for other black players. The numbers then started to decline when football and basketball started to become more prominent in America. Baseball was becoming an old and slow sport, while basketball and football caught the attention of black athletes. Baseball has become a sport that represents older America and because of the culture change people want something different like basketball and football. When the culture changes, so do ... Literature And The English Literature Essay Literature can briefly be defined as written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit; books and writings published on a particular subject or leaflets and other printed matter used to advertise products or give advice. One of the most popular forms of literature would be English literature. If one would look up the definition for English literature, the best descriptive information would be that it s impression and format is over one hundred years old, and continues to be one of the most common studied forms of art, as far as written, studied in high schools and universities around the world. English literature is basically the study of literature that has been written in the English language. This form of literature expands past the most common American language and dates back to the Shakespearean and Renaissance timeline. English literature has progressed and taken many different forms over the years and constantly evolves numerous elements that makes it such an elaborate art. It all begins with an emotion, perception, or experience the author may have endured or witnessed. It is the understanding of these words and elements, which causes not only the students that are required to read said literature; but those who appreciate the true authenticity of a well written novel or short story, to truly appreciate the purpose and importance of it all. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the tremendous impact that our employees have on local traffic, I recommend the use of shuttle buses for safety purposes. Since the area has many busy roads, hence leading to congestion problems, most companies are turning to shuttle services in order to minimize risk. Offering shuttle buses has many benefits to both the employee and employer. First, there is increased employee productivity since the employees have a lot of spare time from avoiding congested roads. Cases of tardiness will be reduced since all employees will have a scheduled bus picking them up daily. Employees could be more disposed to this solution because it will allow them to save money on fuel and other expenses such as parking. Offering commuter services could also be cost saving to the company since it will not be required to construct a parking area or offer mileage expenses to employees with cars. These are all rational reasons as to why the company should acquire shuttle buses for its employees. Solution 2: Telecommuting The data illustrates that the number of employees that believe telecommuting is not an option, is not as high as the number of employees that stated that nothing could encourage them to take public transportation. Between telecommuting and providing subsidized bus passes, based on the data provided above, employees would be more inclined to telecommuting.
