The State of Nature and its Implications for Civilization...
The State of Nature and its Implications for Civilization in Hobbes and Rousseau
In his Leviathan Thomas Hobbes expresses a philosophy of civilization which is both practical and
just and stems from a clear moral imperative. He begins with the assertion that in the state of nature
man is condemned to live a life solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short. It is in the interest of every
man to rise above this state of nature and to give up certain rights so that the violent nature of the
human animal can be subdued. Jean Jacques Rousseau s vision of the state of nature parallels that of
Hobbes but for its more optimistic tone: I assume that men reach a point where the obstacles to their
preservation in a state of nature prove ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hobbes argues for the rule of a monarch for his peace centered civil society. He believes that a
monarch who understands the basis for the covenant, who adheres to it and truly recognizes the
importance of justice for all of humanity, is the most efficient and trustworthy method of transcending
the state of nature. For Hobbes the most important aspect of justice is keeping the peace through
adherence to the natural law. Peace reigns supreme in his vision of civilization and a strong ruler who
can pass laws to ensure that his subjects respect the covenant is needed. Although such a government
might be granted a dangerous amount of power, nonetheless an overarching sovereign with knowledge
of the natural laws is needed to keep in line those who would abuse the liberties granted them through
the covenant, thus threatening the society with a return to the state of nature.
Rousseau, in contrast, sees a true transcendence of the state of nature as including more than simply
peace. His goal is more ambitious than Hobbes s. Because in Rousseau s philosophy humans in a state
of nature are not suffering as directly as Hobbes suggests, their goal is more than just the peace
described in Leviathan: How to find a form of association which

Investigating Hooke s Law And The Euler Bernoulli Bending...
In this lab, deflection and strain are measured in an attempt to confirm Hooke s law and the Euler
Bernoulli bending beam theory. In addition, the measured data allows us to calculate the modulus of
elasticity (Young s Modulus) or E of the cantilever beam. Through the course of the experiment our
observations revealed that the addition of weights deformed the beam in response to the applied stress.
This deformation can be modeled using the Euler Bernoulli beam bending theory. Our
experimentation and calculations revealed that our data did indeed prove the theories mentioned in
this lab. Furthermore, our values for the modulus of elasticity or E came within the range of
established values found online.
Engineering involves a wide array of problems that must be overcome. A great deal of time is spent
researching materials and their properties. Materials compromise all aspects of our society, from
buildings to roads to even the equipment that was used in this lab. Problems arise in regards to how
strong or flexible the material is, with the official terms being stress, strain, and elasticity. Improper
use of such materials results in tragedies such as the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington that failed
to due resonance and stress beyond its elastic limit [1].
This lab teaches us the importance of stress, strain, and elasticity. Their relationships are explored
through the deformation of a cantilever beam. Stress is introduced as weights and the beams
experiences strain.

African Nova Scotians Character Analysis
Caucasian Canadians gave stereotypes to African Nova Scotians based on their race and the
preconceived ideas that Caucasians had which came from America and Europe. Stereotypes are
caused by people assuming certain behaviours belong to specific groups of people. In the journal,
White Man s Country by John Schultz it states that Caucasian Canadians believed that African Nova
Scotians had loose habits, laziness, sexual appetites, [a] lack of manliness and mental deficiencies
[which] would pollute the pure stream of Canadian morals. These stereotypes believed by Caucasians
made it difficult for African Nova Scotians to find work which impacted their economic situation.

African Nova Scotian children in Halifax had less resources than Caucasian children, many
communities remained without public schools for African Nova Scotians which made it difficult for
children and many adults to make progress in the education and career field. The lack of opportunities
of schooling prevented these children and adults from improving their lives within a society which
discriminated against them and was demanding of having an education or basic literacy skills to work.
Though African Nova Scotians in Halifax were not provided with the same educational resources such
as public schooling this did not prevent African Nova Scotians from providing their children and
themselves with an education or at least the basic literacy skills. In Africville the church was not only
a source for worship but it also provided a space for Sunday School for children and illiterate adults
and these Sunday Schools taught those in the community how to read and write. If communities did

The Ottoman Hexagonal Tile With Floral Pattern
The Ottoman Hexagonal Tile with Floral Pattern is located in the Art from Islamic Lands gallery, in
room 2550, on the second floor of the Arthur M. Sackler Museum on the Harvard University Campus.
The object number is 1960.102. It is located with a series of Ottoman tiles on the easternmost wall of
the one room gallery. The tile, created between 1520 and 1540, is from İznik, Turkey. It is composed
of fritware ceramic painted underglaze. The base of the tile is a white underglaze glaze, and all
decoration is in various shades of blue underglaze. The shape is a hexagon with a circular,
symmetrical floral pattern derived from a central focal point. This tile had meticulous work put into its
design, showing the concern of its artist to emulate cultural tradition and destiny on a single ceramic
hexagon.
Fritware is a form of pottery where frit is added to the clay in order to lower the necessary fusion
temperature. This version of ceramics was popular in İznik, Turkey, the leading producer of decorative
tiles during the Ottoman Empire. Underglaze is a technique in which decoration is painted to the piece
before it is glazed. However, underglaze uses certain pigments derived from oxides that fuse with the
glaze, thus restricting the color palette. The original color found to work by the Chinese was cobalt
blue, and this is present on the Ottoman tile. In addition, the İznik factories used turquoise, purple,
green and red in later years. Because this tile is from the earlier part

Essay On The Spanish Armada
During the Middle Ages, European countries rival each other with their wealth and military prowess.
This period dawn the age of European expansion led by England, France, Portugal, and Spain. The
Spanish armada, known for its expertise when it comes to the sea, have eventually reached the rich
shores of the Philippines. They bring with them two purpose in invading this land. First was their
devotion to spread the Catholic faith. Secondly, the drive to increase the wealth of Spain and to
challenge the position of other leading European countries. (Wanlass, 1952)
The Spain s source of power is its Navy, thus they used this to colonized smaller countries and

The Filipino Middle class started to emerge. These class which were also called The Ilustrados studied

have the capability to liberate themselves from the Spanish colonizers. This also began the expansion
of various European Political thought. The emergence of an educated middle class caused a demand
for the recognition of its capability to lead the nation. This was manifested through the writing of
Rizal, who studied in Spain and other European countries and integrate these learnings to his writings.
These works which contained the abuse and maltreatment of the Spanish served as the eye opener for
his countrymen. Another Filipino who was greatly influence, not only by the works of Rizal but also
the different movements which occurred in Europe was Bonifacio. Influenced by the French
Revolution and the ideas of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity, Bonifacio used this as tools for rebellion.
In accordance to the event which led to the revolution, if the state no longer do its duty to the people,
the latter have the rights to depose the former (Social Contract Theory) . Since the government led by
Spanish authorities do not function for the benefit of the Filipino people, Bonifacio and the
revolutionaries deemed it proper to overthrow the government and establish the same which will

Hunting Vs Hunting Essay
Misconceptions Vs. Reality of Hunting
Many people have misconstrued ideas about what it means to be a hunter. Some have this idea in their
heads that hunters are just out to kill and have no respect for the environment the animals live in or the
animals themselves. When in reality hunters care more about the environment than most people
because of the very fact that they care about the animals they hunt. Hunting is one of the best way to
bring a family together like no other activity. The misconception that hunting is a just an
individualized activity couldn t be more wrong. When hunting with your family, you experience an
adventure with your loved ones that brings you all closer together like no other way. The truths of
what it means to be a hunter are hunters care about the animals they hunt and the environment they
hunt in more than the average person. Hunting is a great way to bring the family together unlike any
other activity. Also, hunting brings people closer to nature in way unlike any other. And it s this
connection with nature that keeps hunters humbled by the environment they are in and the animals
that live in it.
Hunters know more about the animals they hunt and the environment they live in better than anyone
else. Before a hunter ventures off to pursue the animal they are hunting, weeks of pre season scouting
are required in order to pattern the animal to get in close enough to make a kill. The misconception
that hunters have to just drive around and watch for an animal then go kill it is completely absurd.
Hunters spending days even weeks looking for and observing the animals they are attempting to
harvest, and coming up with a game plan on how they are going to harvest them. Biologists, the Game
and Fish Departments, and many other wildlife agency s depend on hunters reports for accurate data in
measuring the health of big game herds. When a hunter receives their tag in the mail, it usually will
come with a blood testing kit. The Game and Fish started issuing these kits a few years ago in an
attempt to track where the brucellosis disease was spreading to. Now, the Game and Fish could have
just tranquilized a few hundred elk from each area surrounding the state of Wyoming over the years.

Organizational leadership means the process of improving actions of line managers and decision
makers through better knowledge and understanding. To operate effectively, organizations need to fit
or align themselves with their environment, strategies, capabilities and leadership skills. To compete
successfully in highly competitive and constantly changing business environment, however,
organizations also need to achieve fitness and the ability to learn and change to fit new circumstances.
In other words, firms can lose their competitive advantage through the lapse of time, therefore
leadership skills are the only sustainable competitive advantage firms can have.
After a colleagues discussion, and a series research, we have decided that Hewlett Packard (HP) will
be the subject of our case study for the Organizational Leadership course project. Reason being, the
HP culture speaks, acts, and operates within their values, which will be further elaborated in their
motto that is widely shared at HP, The HP Way . The core organizational values have been embedded

Narragansett Yacht manufactures fiberglass sailboats which range from 18 foot day sailors to 50foot
ocean racing yachts. The company was founded in Newport, Rhode Island, a hotbed of sailing activity,
but high labor costs forced it to move its manufacturing operations to Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1990.
The boat building industry is very competitive and highly labor intensive, and profitability depends on
getting the maximum efficiency out of the labor force. Narragansett has managed to keep its
workforce nonunionized; this means that all of its employees can be shifted from task to task, and

Function, Structure, Synthesis And The Use Of The Protein...
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the function, structure, synthesis and the use of the protein
elastin (ELN), which encodes for one of the two elements of elastic fibers in the human body (NCBI
1). Addressing the fundamental aspects of the protein will allow us to explore the potential
applications and implications of the protein if it has been modified.
Introduction and Function
Elastin is the one of the key components in the elastic property of tissues found in human tissues such
as arteries, lungs, and elastic cartilage to name a few (Jacob, Sauvage, Osbourne 1). Elastin is mainly
composed of amino acids glycine and proline, which are hydrophobic and are combined with lysine
residues in crosslinks (NCBI 1). It plays a fundamental role in the recoil of tissues after being
stretched, which is critical in maintaining the cells health (Weiss 1). Thirty percent of the dry weight
of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in arteries is comprised of the protein elastin, hence, making it an
essential part of human tissue (Krettek, Sukhova, Libby 1). Elastin can be found abundantly in the
dermis of the skin, the arterial walls, the pulmonary tissues, which helps with the expansion of the
lungs upon breathing and the recoil upon exhaling (Krettek, Sukhova, Libby 1). Elastin in the skin is
elastic tissue intertwined with other components in the dermis through fibers that are interconnected
(Krettek, Sukhova, Libby 1). The skin is dense with elastic tissue, which allows for the

Freestanding Malls
I know that someone has used Freestanding sites (pg 185), but I will use that along with Enclosed
shopping malls (pg. 191) for comparing and contrasting. The company that I work for tends to scope
out available spaces to grow the company. They aren t particularly picky in the choices that they make
if they believe that the store will make them money. They want to be able to be diverse in their
locations and experience the best of both worlds. We have locations that come in all different shapes
and sizes. The most frequent being freestanding sites and also ones that are enclosed in malls. Not alot
of places down here have attractions inside of malls and I m not exactly sure how it looks up north. It
s interesting though because the foot traffic that comes along with the stores based in malls is
amazing. You can attract customers who weren t even planning to come to the store, but they come in
to check it out and end up spending money. In a sense, the customers are planned for but that on top of
loyal customers is really great. Our freestanding stores do well on their own too. Only difference is
that they depend on their loyal customers. The random foot traffic ... Show more content on

I believe though that malls have more downsides for our company. Being in mall there are rules to
follow. With renting property inside a mall, there tend be alot of rules that have to be followed. We
have to match their hours and there isn t much flexibility with it. Since it is an out of the way
attraction, we could either not be getting the business that we want because people don t realize to
come to a mall. People can t just drive by and see what we are. We don t have our own private parking
lot, we share a space with an entire mall. That can be inconvienient for a lot of people. Some people
just flat out don t like the mall and avoid it at all costs. Sometimes malls can jack the rent of places up

In the 1989 elections, although Rajiv Gandhi and Congress won more seats in the 1989 elections than
any other single party, he was unable to form a government with a clear majority. The Janata Dal, a

Genetic Engineering is a Process of Altering Genetic...
INTRODUCTION:
Genetic Engineering is a process where an organism s genetic material is altered by introducing a new
DNA. It is where a gene is artificially removed from one organism and transmitted into another using
biotechnology. Its goal is to provide with one or more traits that are not found in recipient organism,
giving it the ability to perform a certain action, which the organism in nature cannot. DNA and
proteins are very important aspects in order to understand genetic engineering. DNA is the genetic
material that is found in every organism. It is located in the nucleus of every cell. It is made up of four
complimentary bases, Adenine to Thymine and Guanine to Cytosine. These four bases help make the
genetic code by providing information for the cell and essential proteins that an organism requires in
order to survive. Some proteins act as enzymes that can help speed up the reaction. The genetic code is
similar in every organism which benefits in the process of genetic engineering. When a gene is
transmitted into the recipient organism through the means of transformation, the similarity of the code
allows the recipient organism to express the specific trait. Some bacteria use transformation by
acquiring the naked DNA from the environment and alter their genes by attaining new traits.
Escherichia coli, also known as E.coli is a bacterium that lives in the intestine of warm blooded
organisms that causes sickness and several diseases particularly in the weak

The Effects Of Unicef On The World
The Causes and Effects of UNICEF on the World
Some of the main goals of UNICEF are Child Protection/Social Inclusion, Child Survival and
Education. Child Protection is a critical goal in the world. Girls and boys are sensitive to abuse either
by gender, race, or ethnic backgrounds. There is no discrimination in abuse, whether it be mental or
physical. The rate of abuse is higher for children who are disabled or are orphaned. Most of these
cases are rarely sought out, most kids are usually too scared to talk about what happened or even tell
someone they know about the crimes that are occurring. This is because of the fact that most abuse is
done by close family members or people they know. Sometimes, it even occurs in the school or
workplaces ( Child ). There are many countries in poverty around the world. The UNICEF
organization helps raise money to ensure the protection, safety, and education of children in over 100
countries. Children with disabilities are usually not talked about, they are the most ostracized group of
children in society. They are not only not seen, but also not heard. There are about 93 million children
with disabilities in the world, and every each one goes through discrimination/bullying due to their
disability. These children are a lot less likely to go to school or receive any medical help. These
children do not have a voice. The cause of this is that people do not want to take a disabled child

The Wife s Lament And The Seafarer Analysis
The
Similarities of The Wife s Lament and The Seafarer Life away from home can be hard, but imagine
what it would be like if it was to a harsh sea or under a giant tree. In the two poems we will be
dissecting, you will see how these two different situations have a lot in common. In one of the oldest
poems known in the world, The Seafarer was written long by an unknown author.
Throughout the poem we see how the man takes his exile emotionally and physically, all the while he
sails the sea and world. He goes to other countries and shows how on his missions he sees amazing
things, but he expresses how sad he is. In the second poem, The Wife s Lament, a woman is exiled to a
cave by her husband, and she goes through all her thoughts and emotions, and she decides to get out
her anger and heartbreak for her husband, she curses him while is out at sea. While we go through
both of these poems, we will find differences between exiles. In The Seafarer, it isn t known whether
the man was exiled, or if he willingly left his home.
Throughout the poem you can see the way that the man holds himself together, and how he feels about
the people on the land. This the man does not know for whom on land it turns out most favourably,
how i, wretched and sorrowful, on the ice cold sea... In this line, we can see that the man is very angry
about having to be out at sea. While he is out at sea, he talks about his family back at home that later
help us connect The SeaFarer to The Wife s Lament. You can see how the mans actions and words
were very Pagen at the beginning of the poem, but slowly transform into Christian values and words
change by the end of the poem. This leads many people to believe that the original poem have been
translated by high church member, because they were the only ones back then that were educated
enough to read and write. If it were translated by a high ranking church member, it is possible that
some of it might have been changed. As you move onto the second poem, The Wife s Lament, we look
at an exile, through a different person s eyes. When the Wife is still on land, she is still exiled far away
to a cave area under a great tree. Although she was not on the seas, she still found

Moses And Exodus
I am going to be talking about Moses and the law it was written in the book of exodus. Moses was
born a Hebrew in Egypt. Hebrews we re an Israelite slave in Egypt at the time when Moses was born
Hebrews started to expand so large that the Egyptians started getting terrified and saying what if the
Hebrews outgrow us? If they outgrow us that means the Hebrew will out number the Egyptians so
therefore if the Hebrews wanted to take over they will be able to because they outnumber the
Egyptians. Pharaoh came up with this idea If he killed all Hebrew baby boys at birth he wouldn t have
to worry about that problem so Pharaoh ordered that all Hebrew baby boys are to be put to death at
birth.
Moses mother had been hiding him for three months she was afraid of keeping him any longer The
reason they hid him for just three months was, because during that period he was able to remain a bit
more silent and discreet, and wasn t very conspicuous to people outside of his home; but as he grew
older, this quickly changed and something had to be done. Not knowing what else to do because the

Analysis Of Dante s The Of Hell
Jacob Barnett
Essay#2
Reid
Title
I think Dante s description of Hell is a wonderful work of literature. Dante uses numerous literary
techniques to describe his envisionment of Hell to the reader. In my opinion, one of the most affective
techniques used by Dante is symbolism. It would be a very difficult task to compile a brief list of
significant symbols from the Cantos that we read in class. Dante utilized many symbols throughout
each canto. Some of the symbols that Dante used in Inferno are well defined and easy to interpret,
while other symbols are much more difficult to recognize and understand. For this paper, I will be
analyzing multiple symbols from Dante s Inferno. Some of the symbols came from the Canto s that
were included in class readings while others were depicted throughout the Canto s that were not
assigned readings.
I found that one of the major symbols that reoccurred throughout the poem is the idea of a continuing
journey. This was depicted in the very first line of the poem when Dante s life was compared to a road
or pathway which Dante is halfway through. The specificity of the piece noting that Dante is halfway
through further emphasizes the symbolism of continuing a journey by out rightly stating that he has
begun but not yet finished. Therefore, when Dante strays from the intended path in the beginning of
the first Canto he has symbolically strayed from the right kind of life . Dante s journey with Virgil
through the many layers of hell also

The Growth Of Aquatic Moss Under Different Lighting...
Introduction: motivation: I have chosen to study the growth of aquatic moss under different lighting
conditions. The reason I have chosen this is because I have been maintaining fish tanks for a couple of
years now and have noticed that the plants grow different shades of green and at a faster or slower rate
depending under which light source they are placed. I chose moss as it is a common fast growing plant
that is quite hardy making it easier to see how the light effects it. I am interested to see the different
results as I would like to start growing more expensive plants and want them to grow under the best
conditions possible
investigative question: Aquatic moss grows at a faster rate under natural sunlight rather than artificial
light.
Aim: At what rate will aquatic moss grow under a pink uv light, blue uv light and natural sunlight.
hypothesis: Aquatic moss will grow at its quickest rate under a white uv light.
Literature review:
Lumens refer precisely to how much light a particular light source gives off, rather than how much
energy it produces. Easy plants 15 25 lumen per litre, medium 25 50 lumen per litre, advanced 50
lumen per litre. Have an equal spread of lighting throughout tank as it decreases as it gets near the
edges. Metal halide lamps produce the most light, closely followed by the modern high output LED
lights plus they are small so you can have lots of them close together. T5 and T8 bulbs both produce
the roughly the same amount of

Pompeii Site Analysis
Tourism can be one of the most destructive forces facing archaeological sites and their conservators.
Tourists can cause damage by disregarding signs prohibiting touching or littering. Parts of sites may
need to be manipulated or even destroyed to allow for visitor access. Striking a balance between
allowing the public to interact with a site and preserving it is very difficult. Some sites, like Bet She an
in Israel, give tourists the freedom to touch monuments and even climb onto them to give the visitors
authentic experiences, despite the damage it causes. Others, like Pompeii in Italy, keep tourists within
certain bounds to protect the sites. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of
replicating archaeological sites as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They have had to battle issues like tourists lack of sensitivity to conservation issues, such as the
damage caused by visitors sitting or leaning on delicate masonry and marble, a threat to conservation.
Visitors have even been caught splashing water onto mosaics to freshen them up for pictures.
Additionally, the general movement of tourists causes the gradual wearing down of the roads and
pavements. Tourists also might take chips of stone from the site, as well as accidentally brush against
the walls and frescoes, further increasing their rate of deterioration (Wallace 2013). In studies to
understand the tourism of the site, it was discovered that many of these tourists damaging actions were
not done maliciously, but out of a desire to experience the site. However, the open nature of Pompeii
for tourists is also a leading cause in vandalism, graffiti and theft. Some of the vandalism involves
scratching one s name into a wall and also stems from a desire to experience the site and tie it to one s
self, but that does not make it any less unacceptable. Steps have been taken to restrict tourists to
conserve parts of the site. The governing body for Pompeii has begun issuing new tickets that allow
for tourists to visit cities such as Herculaneum and Stabiae, to reduce the pressure on Pompeii.
Additionally, there are cautioning signs, roped off areas and closed buildings, but the site continues to
suffer from the impulses of its visitors (Wallace

Geological And Environmental Circumstances That Have Been...
Geological and environmental circumstances that have an affect have been designated geohazards.
There are many different categories of geohazards that can occur in the world. Some of these
geohazards include landslides, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, lahars, and hydrothermal eruptions.
These natural disasters can all have both short and long term effect on the surrounding environment. It
is important to recognize the different kinds of geohazards and how to know if we can take preventive
measures or very minimally understand which areas may be more susceptible to a geohazard event.
A landslide is the downward movement of land typically from a slope or a cliff. They are more
common in coastal and mountain range areas. In the United ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The largest earthquake that has been recorded was a 9.6. It occurred May 22, 1960 in southern Chile.
It lasted for approximately ten minutes. There was a resulting tsunami that hit Hawaii, Japan, and part
of New Zealand. While the exact number of casualties is unknown the number is estimated to be
between one thousand to six thousand souls.
Tsunami is a Japanese term meaning harbour wave. They are also known as tidal waves or seismic sea
waves. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are these most prevalent triggers of tsunami occurrences.
What makes tsunamis not the same as normal waves is that customary whitecaps are caused by the
gravitational pull of the moon or sun, or they are formed due to wind patterns. However, tsunamis are
caused by a severe water displacement. While tsunamis do transpire around the world, Japan is the
foremost victim of this natural disaster. Tsunamis can be over one hundred feet tall and move forward
at speeds of five hundred miles per hour. An average of 7,916 people perishes each year correlated to
tsunami incidents. Another 85,582 are affected. Eighty percent of tidal waves transpire in the Pacific
Ocean s ring of fire.
The largest recorded tsunami occurred on July 9, 1958. It happened in the evening after an earthquake
happened on the Fairweather Fault in the Alaska Panhandle. It had a record height of 1,720 feet and
hit the shores of Lituya Bay, Alaska. The impact of the tsunami resulted in the uprooting of many

Examples Of Metatheory
There are many metatheoretical traditions that have influenced modern social sciences as we know it
today. This essay critically compares the two different concepts such as objectivity and neutrality in
various educational theories and systems such as: Missionary education, Apartheid education, Post
Apartheid education, Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS) and Curriculum Assessment
Policy Statement (CAPS). We discuss the applications of these two seemingly different concepts and
their application in different educational theories such as: Constructivism, behaviorism and social
cognition. Furthermore, we discuss objectivity and neutrality in various educational contexts. I will
attempt to show that education cannot be neutral if the objectives are politically and economically
driven.
Defining metatheory
Metatheory is the study aimed at understanding the nature of social inquiry (Babbie Mouton, 1998).
There are different names for metatheory such as: metascience, philosophy of science and the
epistemology of science (Babbie Mouton, 1998). According to Babbie and Mouton metatheory has a
three world s framework: world one inquires about the nature of society and human conduct, world
two aims to understand social inquiry and then lastly world three the methodologies used in

Social sciences views objectivity as: not something entirely distinct from detachment of fairness and
honesty (Fay, Pomper, Vann, 1998). However it is a way in rather improving invaluable and important
inflexible virtues. In social science neutrality can similarly be seen as the idiom sitting on a fence
which is why it is hard or even impossible to achieve neutrality in social science. Neutrality can be
seen as being impartial towards facts. In this essay we will be following the definitions of objectivity
and neutrality as seen in the social

Fetal Viability
Societies and organizations around the world hold different beliefs on the question of when life
begins. Opinions range from the belief that life begins at fertilization to others that believe that life
cannot begin until the child is born (Kelly, 1995, p. 65). At the moment it is legal to have an abortion
in Great Britain up to the 24th gestation. Those in favor of abortion often suggest the debate centers
around when the fetus becomes sufficiently human to have the right, opponents believe the fetus is
never anything other than human from conception (BBC Ethics, 2014). However neither side of the
abortion debate can draw much support from simple word of mouth, legislation has taken abortion

Fetal viability is known as the point at which a fetus can survive outside of the mother s womb
(Nursing Times, 2014). The Human Fertilization and Embryology Act of 1990 states that the upper
gestation limit for legal termination is defined as the end of the 24th week of pregnancy (Magil
Cuerden, 2011, p. 753). There have always been two arguments for the 24th week limit that; that it
presents a social/political compromise taking into account public opinion and that it presents the lower
limit of fetal viability (Alan Guttmacher Institute, 1999). Those that want the abortion time limit to be
lowered argue that the survival rate of premature babies has improved since the 1990 s, the last time
the law was changed. In the last 60 years or so advances in technology have enabled women to give
birth to premature babies (Magil Cuerden, 2011, p. 641). Those that want the abortion limit to be
lowered argue that the survival rate of premature has improved since 1990. According to them medical
science and technology have made it easier for premature babies born between 21 22 weeks and six
days to be saved and viability is now set at 19weeks (Acred, 2012, p. 21)

Joan of Arc is a prominent figure in European history, however, most of the history surrounding the
maid of Orleans La Pucelle d Orléans (Lanhers and Vale, 2016), is generally focused on debunking her

The Purpose of the Biblical Flood narrative
The Old Testament can be described as an anthology of the literature of ancient Israel and early
Judaism (Coogen 2008) that contains many forms of writings and stories which address not only
myth, main historical events and laws, but also those that follow the Israelites unique relationship with
God. The first book of the Old Testament is known as Genesis, which is highly concerned with the
world s creation and its initial stages. It is also the origin of the biblical Flood Narrative concerning
Noah and the Ark. The story is characterised by a man that is instructed to build an ark under the
guidance of God, and take with him family members and pairs of animals, to survive a catastrophic
universal flood. The flood narrative belongs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ea, a god that is unhappy with the idea of flooding the world, secretly instructs Utnapishtim to build a
boat and to take with him animals in order to survive the impending flood.
Tear down the house and build a boat! Abandon wealth and seek living beings! Spurn all possessions
and keep alive living beings! Make all living things go up in the boat! The boat which you are to
build, its dimensions must be equal to each other: (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI).
Similarly God says to Noah; I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with
violence because of them; now I am going to destroy them along with the earth. Make yourself and
ark of cypress wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how you
are to make it: (Gen 6:13 15, NRSV). Later in the chapter God reveals to Noah; For my part I am
going to bring a flood of water to the earth (Gen 6:17, NRSV) and instructs Noah to bring into the ark
of every living thing, of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive
with you: (Gen 6:19, NRSV). Another example of the parallels within each story is the description of
everything being submerged by water. In the Epic of Gilgamesh it reads The sea calmed, fell still, the
whirlwind (and) flood stopped up. I looked around all day long quiet had set in and all the human
beings had turned to clay! The terrain was as flat as a roof. (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI). The

The Hawthorne Studies
Introduction
Hawthorne Studies began in 1924 until 1932 at the Western Electric, Hawthorne plant in Cicero,
Illinois, by Professor Elton Mayo. Initially, this study was originated to identify the conditions of
which would improve the working conditions for higher productivity. However, as time progressed, it
evolved and was used by managements across as a guide to restructuring their respective companies.
With Professor Elton Mayo from the Harvard Business School began a study of how the workers at
Western Electric behave. (Wickstrom, Bourke, 1986) Part of the reason that Western Electric was
chosen was due it was a large manufacturing company that consisted of about 40,000 workers with a
mixture of men and women.

Lastly, the workplace is a social system: The Hawthorne researchers came to view the workplace as a
social system made up of interdependent parts. This is reflected from the results of the tests from the
women in the relay assembly test room. This is where a group of six women were singled out from the
main assembly line and isolated in a room where the group of them assembled the products together.
After monitoring them, it was noted that productivity in the assembly room rose much higher than that
of the main assembly department. Reason being the women felt happier, more intimate and developed
a strong bond for each other while in the assembly room, and this resulted in wholehearted
spontaneous working attitudes and relationships resulting in significant rise in the results for the
assembly. (Sonnenfeld, 1985)
Findings from the Hawthorne studies emerged at the time when Frederick Taylor s Scientific
Management theory was in place. However, the findings from the Hawthorne studies, with some
realistic modifications to the individual scenarios and modernization, can still be applicable to the
managers of today, when used to handle staff in the various fields, even more than the requirements of
the initial industrial management.
From the Hawthorne studies, we can identify three

If you routinely dry tubs, showers counters and sinks, but still have an issue, check for a water leak.
Inspect under the sink and behind the toilet as well as the floors, faucets, showerheads, and around
accessible pipes for leaks. Ensure the shower door is not allowing water to leak out onto the floor.
Ideal indoor humidity is 50%, air conditioning or dehumidifiers can assist in reducing humidity, and
deterring mold. Call Benjamin Franklin s plumbers in Arlington, TX for the replacement of worn,
leaking bath fixtures.
Allow the ventilation fan to run during showers and baths, and for 20 minutes afterwards to allow the
moisture time to dry. If you do not have a ventilator fan, opening a window can be helpful when
weather permits. Consider installing a fan, selecting the correct cubic feet per minute (CFM) rating for
your bathroom. To determine the size you need, multiply the room s square footage by 1.1 for 8 ft.

Use an absorbent towel or squeegee to dry the shower and sink after showering or cleaning up at the

Causes, And The Cause And Effect Of The Outsiders
Conare Lucas 11/1/17
Prof Philip Titan Cause and Effect Essay
When people first start reading a book there is one burning question: What is this story about? It s a
heavy question, especially for a fiction novel with so many fabricated details. You can fix this by
saying a story is all about decisions. Of course, there are other themes, but the entire story is
connected by the questions characters ask themselves and the outcome of their own answers. We can
think about how this mimics real life. How every day we are forced to consider life s chance
situations; some casual, some pressing, but all of them impacting our final growth as people and those
around us to some degree. A good example of this is when in the book The Outsiders , our protagonist
Jonny decided to kill Bob in self defense, this resulted in Jonny and Ponyboy going on the run. The
decisions, the choices, that were made by Jonny change the course of his and his cohort s entire lives
in an instant directing the whole final tale and story outcome.
In the book the outsiders Ponyboy and many other characters have to make questionable decisions. A
good example of this is, Ponyboy s choice to walk might bring up questions. Why does Pony boy walk
home alone, even though he knows it s not safe? Is he just making a foolish choice? Is he

American Women In The 20th Century
The 20th century precipitated a myriad of social and technological changes in The United States, and
women as a group experienced one of the earliest examples of these shifts. Women became more
active in the workplace, political sphere, and the feminist/ suffrage movement was at its height. The
reception to this shift in gender roles had mixed responses with many claiming that the new modern
woman was an assault on convention. T.S. Elliot was no exception. The proposition that Eliot was
hostile to the modernization of women is founded on his adoration for traditionalism and the
unattainable, golden age. Some individuals of the 20th century attempted to oppose the cultural shift
that was being determined as causally related to the death of culture. ... Show more content on

Albert has recently has recently come back from the war (another plague that is associated with this
time period), and the marriage of Lil and Albert is strained. In the setting Eliot creates, Lil and another
women are discussing the statement of her marriage. Two main topics of discussion arise of their
dialogue. The first is that Albert is no longer attracted to Lil; she has poor teeth and after having five
children looks antique even though she is only thirty one (155 156). The other woman warns Lil that
all Albert wants [is] a good time , and that if she don t give it him, there s others will (147 194); in
response seems unalarmed by the prospect, but rather she asserts that she wants to know who would
give him a good time because she would then know who to thank (151). The second piece of
conversation that is revealed to the reader is that Lil had spent money that Albert gave her for dental
repairs to purchase abortion pills. The response from the friend mirrors that of Eliot s own view of
marriage; she asks, What you get married for if you don t want children? (163). Eliot s traditional
view held that the purpose of sex in a marriage is procreation alone. This is, of course, no longer the
purpose of sex when The Wasteland is written. Therefore, when Eliot writes about the horrendous
nature of relationships of modern times he paints Lil who embodies women on the whole as the cause
for the futility of relationships. He believes that a woman should return to the honorable, traditional
position of mother and spouse, subsequently, when Lil aborts her fetus she is abolishing the custom

Anne Frank, Nelson Mandela And Louis Zamperini
After reading many stories about people being incarcerated by their environments, you would think
they would just accept it or give up. Shockingly in many of the stories I ve read the exact opposite
happens and they fight through these tough situations and always manage to stay positive no matter
what is thrown at them. Anne Frank, Nelson Mandela and Louis Zamperini are perfect examples of
people who were physically and emotionally incarcerated and they never let it bring them down.
Instead, they used their incarceration as motivation to better the situation they were in.
Reading many of the poems in class really gives you a sense of how a person is feeling in such little

difference being that Hover cars actually do exist. Upon first glance, the story seems liberating,

that s only because we have never been given the chance. And if, like Julia Gillard perhaps, we do

if we were more successful than any man before us. But Huxley s lack of femme fatale doesn t stop
him from portaying the few female characters in a non favourable way. The only memorable female
characters in the book, Lenina and Linda, were both semi perfectly conditioned Betas, which gives the
impression that women are single sided and lack distinguishing characteristics. What s more is that
Huxley doesn t mention a single female Alpha plus nor World Leader; apparently the top of the food

unorthodox, and rebellious. And they are definitely the only ones praised for those very things.
Despite the caste system and the belief that everyone is happy now, the elites of Huxley s book are
still trying to break the barrier. Even though they are the most privelleged people in society. They re

Louis Pontmercy s Participation In The Rebellion
Marius Pontmercy should not be convicted for his participation in the rebellion against the French
government because it was not a direct assault on the government. First, Marius father, Georges
Pontmercy, was a soldier in Napoleon s army. He fought long and hard for a cause he believed in and
because Marius had great respect for his father he probably wanted to honor his legacy by following
his example. Second, the friends of Marius were very involved in the uprising and Marius felt
obligation to support his friends in their cause. Finally, the Marius father was a dedicated soldier at the
battlefield of Waterloo. He fought for a cause he believed in. Marius, who possessed great respect for
his father likely wished to honor his memory

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Polymers
1.1 Introduction:
Polymer is derived from the Greek word. It can be broken down into Poly means many and mer means
units. This shows that a polymer has small units called monomers in its chemical composition which
are bound together to form a large molecule. Depending on the arrangement of different chains and
how they are joined, polymers can be classified as:
 Thermoplastics
 Thermosets
 Elastomers
1.2 Types of Polymers replacing Metallic Components in Consumer Application: To make our lives
considerably easier, home appliances use circuit control, safety devices and resistance lead. Some of
the devices are thermostat, transducer, Light Dependent Resistor [LDR], motor, etc. some of the
materials used are Aluminum, Antimony, Barium, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is design freedom, low weight, no corrosion, transparency when plastic is used. On the other
hand metals are stiff and strong and so can be machined and welded and this leads to high tolerance
which can be used at high temperatures. Thermoplastics which can be used as metal substitutes
include nylon, polyamide [PA], polybutylene terephthalate [PBT], poly oxymethylene [POM],
polyphenylenesulphide [PPS], polyarylmide [PARA], polypthalamide [PPA], polyetheretherketone
[PEEK], etc. these polymers offer high tensile strength and are flexible.
1.4 Advantages of Polymer Material for Mass Production Now a days there is a very little gap
between use of metals and polymers. Use of polymer is increasing day by day due to the following
reasons:
 Design freedom: it is very easy to mold polymers in any shape and form like injection molding and
blow molding at a very low cost. Polymers can be treated with chemicals to bring out multiple
properties in them which is not possible easily with metals.
 Performance: polymers have high benefits. They reduce the weight, resistant to chemical and
impact, corrosion free, etc. the main reason for the use of polymers is the reduction in weight.
 Efficiency: due to metal replacement there is an increase in manufacturing efficiency as multiple
individual components in a product can be brought together into a single component using

The Effects Of Psychological Counseling On Pregnant Women...
The Poster session was very informative, it had various topics that had information on relevant health
issues. One the posters that caught my attention was To explore the impact of psychological
counseling on pregnant women who are at high risk for carrying a fetus with down syndrome by
Fatima Riaz. The aim of that study was to research the impact of psychological counseling on
pregnant women who were 35 years old or above which are at a high risk of having a child born with
Down syndrome. The objective was to minimize the anxiety and psychological stress mothers endure
after receiving those abnormal test results. One of the things I personally learned was that its an issue
that is indeed relevant, I was told by the presenter that 95% of pregnant women terminate their
pregnancy once they are informed through screening that their child will be born with Down
Syndrome.
The other poster presentation that caught my attention was Evaluating parents perception of the effects
of dental sealants on children from ages 3 12 years by Zarmina Sajjad. The objective of this study was
to explore parent s knowledge of dental sealants as a preventive care in children. I knew beforehand
that dental caries is a chronic disease that could affect everyone. However, I didn t know too much
about the benefits of sealants in children. First dental sealants are a type of plastic that helps
preventing tooth decay because it serves as a barrier that protects teeth from getting cavities, for

Early 19th Century Prison Reform
Prison Reforms of the Early 19th Century The prison reforms of the early nineteenth century was a
revolutionary step in the modern era of prison protocol. Before pre prison reforms, the staff at the
prisons beat the inmates for disciplinary actions. The inmates were confined to a wide variety of
places including closets, pens, cages, cellars, and stalls. Women children and the mentally insane were
all housed in the same buildings. The purpose of the prison reforms was to make the prisons more
humane and acceptable for human kind. Doretha Dix played a major role in the prison reforms. She
stood up to the Massachusetts state legislature and told them that the sick and insane confined in this
Commonwealth in cages, closets, cellars, stalls,

Genetic Down Syndrome
The genetic structure that humans possess is complex, each individual s genetic makeup is unique and
different, yet functions similarly. However, not all people are gifted with a perfectly normal genetic
structure. A person may suffer from genetic defects, which are irregularities in the genome. In the field
of biology, genetic aberrations are not rare cases. According to a surveillance system called
Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program, genetic birth defects, affect approximately 3% of
childbirths in the United States. (MMWR, 2008) This means that over 120,000 newborn babies are
affected by genetic defects in a span of one year, in the United States alone. (NVSS, 2015)
Genetic defects are acquired from childbirth and these genetic ... Show more content on

Around 5300 babies with Down syndrome are born in the United States each year, and approximately
200,000 people in this country have the condition. (de Graaf G, Buckley F, Skotko BG, 2016). While
Down syndrome cannot be inherited, the number of babies with Down syndrome born each year is
alarming. Despite the fact that Down syndrome can be detected before birth, there is no known way to
cure it. As such, the parents whose child have been diagnosed to have Down syndrome have to decide
whether to keep the child or not.
Parenting has never been easy, and it is made harder if the child is affected by Down syndrome. Most
of the time, when parents are informed that their child has Down syndrome, they are stricken with
grief, depression, hopelessness, and the likes. (Preidt, 2010). Having a child affected by such mental
illnesses may make it hard for parents to deal with their children, since any shortcomings may lead to
a miserable life for their child. But even with Down syndrome, a child is still a child, and can still be
brought up to live a happy life if parented correctly.
This study aims to relay the experiences of a parent who has a child with Down syndrome to people
who are not aware of what they go through. The researchers seek to improve the general knowledge of
the public about having a kid with Down

SR rm 022 BSA/375 7/23/12 Part 1 Project Context 1.1. Key Stakeholders In order to make a more
accurate assessment of what you will need in your new HR system it is important that you involve key
stakeholders of the company in the decision making process. The following is a list of the key
stakeholders that should be included in the decision making process: CEO Dr. Michael Riordan is the
boss of the entire company and the person behind making the corporate strategies. He is primarily
concerned with the performances of the company as well as the services the company is providing to
the customers and employees. So integrating a new HR system directly involves him because it
involves the performance and service of the company. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another way of successfully gathering information is by building a prototype or model of the system,
so that users can test or get an idea of what the finished product will be like. With this they can
determine issues, problems, or inconsistency with the system. Another important part of gathering
information is organizing it so that it can be understood and put to proper use. I propose categorizing
the requirements into functional requirements, operational requirements, technical requirements, and
transitional requirements. The functional requirements define how the user thinks the system is
functioning overall, the operational requirements define what background processes need to be
executed in order for the system to work optimally over a period of time, the technical requirements
define what technical issues that must be addressed in order to successfully implement the system, and
the transitional requirements define the processes or steps needed to implement the system smoothly
and successfully. ( Mind Tools , 2012). 1.4. Project Scope The project scope statement is a key
element in any new project. It is used to outline the results that the project will produce and the terms
and conditions under which the work will be performed. Upper management, the requestor of the
project and the project team need to all agree on the

The Effects Of Psychedelics
In the 1950s and 60s research into the potential of psychedelic drugs to treat illnesses began but was
unfortunately stopped in the 70s due to legal opposition from governments and regulatory bodies. It
has only been in very recent years that laws and attitudes regarding psychedelics have changed enough
to allow for research to resume. During this time, evidence has been found to suggest that there is an
unlocked potential of psychedelics to lower rates of mental illness in many sufferers; treating
depression, PTSD, OCD and several anxiety disorders. Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), psilocybin and
mescaline are all naturally occurring psychedelics that act on the human serotonin system and have
been found to significantly reduce rates of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In humans, DMT is thought to be produced by the lungs (Mandel et al., 1972) and by the pineal gland
(Cozzi et al., 2011), where it also acts to influence mood, perception and thought. DMT is synthesized
from the enzymatic conversion of L tryptophan, which is produced endogenously in plants and is an
essential amino acid in animals, to tryptamine, which is then converted to N methyltryptamine, the
final precursor for N,N Dimethyltryptamine (Axelrod, 1961). DMT non selectively binds to 5 HT
serotonin receptors acting as an agonist or antagonist predominantly in the prefrontal cortex
(Strassman, 1996), an area of the brain responsible for mood and emotional processing (Yang and
Raine, 2009). As previously mentioned, it s been observed that depressed patients have reduced
activity in the prefrontal cortex (Gibb, 2012), so activating this area as well as bringing further release
of serotonin is what s thought to treat the depression and increase connections between emotions,
actions and thoughts. The psychological benefits gained from this can be profound for some
individuals as DMT often promotes the development of personal insights and self knowledge. DMT
can be taken externally via inhalation, injection or oral ingestion in which it is more commonly known
as ayahuasca, a traditional brew used by many cultures throughout history in cultural and spiritual
practices (Osório et al., 2015). With regular consumption

My Definition Essay
The best part about being a human being is our ability to look into ourselves, and see both the good
and the bad. Sometimes we might see traits that we love about ourselves, and other times we might
only see things we hate, but we should be able to see that all of it is good. This good comes from God
making us in God s image; by doing this God gives us inherent dignity, and value. And just as
Bonaventure says we can use our internal reflections like a mirror to see God. This idea really struck
me while I was reading, there is no way am I a mirror to see God. There s no way you can see God
through a blonde haired, blue eyed, 18 year old, privileged white girl who has acne and is no where
near perfect. But then I realized through the texts of the third ... Show more content on

In this text Francis describes again that we are made in God s image and likeness, but because of this
we can t take undue credit for our talents and gifts, because after all they re not ours to take credit for
they re God s. Therefore it s not a bad reflection on myself to enjoy my witty humor; in fact it s a form
of praising God. To praise God I have to appreciate that first my wittiness helps to bring out more of
my outgoing nature. Because when I first meet someone again it might be an awkward situation, but
by making a joke I m able to alleviate some of that tension, and get the ball rolling on our hopeful
friendship. Secondly, I have to take my wit for what it is, and as one of God s gifts to me I have an
obligation to try and alleviate the suffering of others by making them laugh. Obviously this isn t
always going to happen. But, I also feel like my wit helps me to see if I could be friends with a person,
for example if I don t make someone laugh with a joke that I find hilarious, maybe its better for me to
put my effort into a friendship else

Social Classes In Mycenaean Civilization
Society: The difference of classes in societal structure can be derived from the goods that were buried
in their graves. It is clear that there was a strong, ruling class and a lower group containing mostly the
common people. The political hierarchy consisted of the The Wanax (or King), at the top, who was the
political and religious leader. Below him were the local chiefs and controllers who looked after
administrative duties. The safety of the state was the responsibility of the Lawagetas, the head of the
army. Because of this efficient hierarchy, the Mycenaean Age was economically and culturally
affluent, while weapons, arms and armaments found in graves and sites confirm their society as
military inclined. Economy: The Mycenaeans used ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Only a few texts, paintings and pictures suggest the name of the Gods. A popular deity was Poseidon,
(at the time probably associated with earthquakes and land transformations). Other important Gods
included the Lady of the Labyrinth and Diwia (Sea Goddess). Other members of the pantheon of
which evidence has been found include Zeus Hera, Ares, Hermes, Athena, Artemis, Erinya as well as
Dionysus. There are very few temples or shrines that have been found where religious practices might
have been exercised: So we can assume all rituals took place on open ground or in peak sanctuaries
and caves. Some shrines that are found have a tripartite structural design. Minoans had a strong
influence on most of the religious practices and rituals practised by the Mycenaeans. Art: Pottery work
such as stirrup jars, pitchers, kraters and chalices were made during this era. The vessels that were
exported were more intricately (instructed and detailed) designes and had beautiful motifs (design),
often depicting warriors and animals. Vessels in the shape of tripods, basins, or lamps were found in
large quantities at the archaeological

The Collective Conscience Of Reality Television, And The...
Media Both the article, Why I just asked my students to put their laptops away by Clay Shirky, and the
article, The collective conscience of reality television by Serena Elavia have their differences, but
mostly similarities. The article by Clay Shirky talks about how electronics affect students while in
school. Many teachers had been letting students use their phones and other electronics during a class
but later teachers began to tell their students to put their devices away. The other article from Serena
Elavia talks about television and how the producers don t always show the truth behind the television
screen and they are only making the viewers upset. The net Media was described on both of the
articles, and how it s also been affecting us today. Although there are many other differences between
the two articles, some similarities include social media, distractions caused, and people s desire over
the topics, both articles agree with the topic. Social media plays a big role on both articles. On, Why I
just asked my students to put their laptops away , social media is used by students during their class.
While doing their work, they were also scrolling down their feed, going on to facebook, twitter,

Film Summary Of The Movie Wicked
Rehearsals Behind the Scenes: Before the production of Wicked, the dancers and singers practiced for
two years. They had scripture readings and worked together on the choreography of the pieces. The
dancers bonded through their love for the show and joked and laughed during rehearsals. The
documentary stated that the dancers rehearsed up until the night before the first production. I find it so
interesting that throughout the course of two years, there was still work to do the night before the
production. I cannot image how they could work for so long and still make last minute changes to the
performance. Choreography: The choreography for the musical, Wicked, is truly phenomenal. The
dancers use their entire body and isolate their

  • 2. The State of Nature and its Implications for Civilization... The State of Nature and its Implications for Civilization in Hobbes and Rousseau In his Leviathan Thomas Hobbes expresses a philosophy of civilization which is both practical and just and stems from a clear moral imperative. He begins with the assertion that in the state of nature man is condemned to live a life solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short. It is in the interest of every man to rise above this state of nature and to give up certain rights so that the violent nature of the human animal can be subdued. Jean Jacques Rousseau s vision of the state of nature parallels that of Hobbes but for its more optimistic tone: I assume that men reach a point where the obstacles to their preservation in a state of nature prove ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hobbes argues for the rule of a monarch for his peace centered civil society. He believes that a monarch who understands the basis for the covenant, who adheres to it and truly recognizes the importance of justice for all of humanity, is the most efficient and trustworthy method of transcending the state of nature. For Hobbes the most important aspect of justice is keeping the peace through adherence to the natural law. Peace reigns supreme in his vision of civilization and a strong ruler who can pass laws to ensure that his subjects respect the covenant is needed. Although such a government might be granted a dangerous amount of power, nonetheless an overarching sovereign with knowledge of the natural laws is needed to keep in line those who would abuse the liberties granted them through the covenant, thus threatening the society with a return to the state of nature. Rousseau, in contrast, sees a true transcendence of the state of nature as including more than simply peace. His goal is more ambitious than Hobbes s. Because in Rousseau s philosophy humans in a state of nature are not suffering as directly as Hobbes suggests, their goal is more than just the peace described in Leviathan: How to find a form of association which ... • 3. Investigating Hooke s Law And The Euler Bernoulli Bending... In this lab, deflection and strain are measured in an attempt to confirm Hooke s law and the Euler Bernoulli bending beam theory. In addition, the measured data allows us to calculate the modulus of elasticity (Young s Modulus) or E of the cantilever beam. Through the course of the experiment our observations revealed that the addition of weights deformed the beam in response to the applied stress. This deformation can be modeled using the Euler Bernoulli beam bending theory. Our experimentation and calculations revealed that our data did indeed prove the theories mentioned in this lab. Furthermore, our values for the modulus of elasticity or E came within the range of established values found online. Engineering involves a wide array of problems that must be overcome. A great deal of time is spent researching materials and their properties. Materials compromise all aspects of our society, from buildings to roads to even the equipment that was used in this lab. Problems arise in regards to how strong or flexible the material is, with the official terms being stress, strain, and elasticity. Improper use of such materials results in tragedies such as the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington that failed to due resonance and stress beyond its elastic limit [1]. This lab teaches us the importance of stress, strain, and elasticity. Their relationships are explored through the deformation of a cantilever beam. Stress is introduced as weights and the beams experiences strain. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

African Nova Scotians Character Analysis Caucasian Canadians gave stereotypes to African Nova Scotians based on their race and the preconceived ideas that Caucasians had which came from America and Europe. Stereotypes are caused by people assuming certain behaviours belong to specific groups of people. In the journal, White Man s Country by John Schultz it states that Caucasian Canadians believed that African Nova Scotians had loose habits, laziness, sexual appetites, [a] lack of manliness and mental deficiencies [which] would pollute the pure stream of Canadian morals. These stereotypes believed by Caucasians made it difficult for African Nova Scotians to find work which impacted their economic situation. African Nova Scotian children in Halifax had less resources than Caucasian children, many communities remained without public schools for African Nova Scotians which made it difficult for children and many adults to make progress in the education and career field. The lack of opportunities of schooling prevented these children and adults from improving their lives within a society which discriminated against them and was demanding of having an education or basic literacy skills to work. Though African Nova Scotians in Halifax were not provided with the same educational resources such as public schooling this did not prevent African Nova Scotians from providing their children and themselves with an education or at least the basic literacy skills. In Africville the church was not only a source for worship but it also provided a space for Sunday School for children and illiterate adults and these Sunday Schools taught those in the community how to read and write. • 5. The Ottoman Hexagonal Tile With Floral Pattern The Ottoman Hexagonal Tile with Floral Pattern is located in the Art from Islamic Lands gallery, in room 2550, on the second floor of the Arthur M. Sackler Museum on the Harvard University Campus. The object number is 1960.102. It is located with a series of Ottoman tiles on the easternmost wall of the one room gallery. The tile, created between 1520 and 1540, is from İznik, Turkey. It is composed of fritware ceramic painted underglaze. The base of the tile is a white underglaze glaze, and all decoration is in various shades of blue underglaze. The shape is a hexagon with a circular, symmetrical floral pattern derived from a central focal point. This tile had meticulous work put into its design, showing the concern of its artist to emulate cultural tradition and destiny on a single ceramic hexagon. Fritware is a form of pottery where frit is added to the clay in order to lower the necessary fusion temperature. This version of ceramics was popular in İznik, Turkey, the leading producer of decorative tiles during the Ottoman Empire. Underglaze is a technique in which decoration is painted to the piece before it is glazed. However, underglaze uses certain pigments derived from oxides that fuse with the glaze, thus restricting the color palette. The original color found to work by the Chinese was cobalt blue, and this is present on the Ottoman tile. In addition, the İznik factories used turquoise, purple, green and red in later years. • 7. Hunting Vs Hunting Essay Misconceptions Vs. Reality of Hunting Many people have misconstrued ideas about what it means to be a hunter. Some have this idea in their heads that hunters are just out to kill and have no respect for the environment the animals live in or the animals themselves. When in reality hunters care more about the environment than most people because of the very fact that they care about the animals they hunt. Hunting is one of the best way to bring a family together like no other activity. The misconception that hunting is a just an individualized activity couldn t be more wrong. When hunting with your family, you experience an adventure with your loved ones that brings you all closer together like no other way. The truths of what it means to be a hunter are hunters care about the animals they hunt and the environment they hunt in more than the average person. Hunting is a great way to bring the family together unlike any other activity. Also, hunting brings people closer to nature in way unlike any other. And it s this connection with nature that keeps hunters humbled by the environment they are in and the animals that live in it. Hunters know more about the animals they hunt and the environment they live in better than anyone else. Before a hunter ventures off to pursue the animal they are hunting, weeks of pre season scouting are required in order to pattern the animal to get in close enough to make a kill. The misconception that hunters have to just drive around and watch for an animal then go kill it is completely absurd. Hunters spending days even weeks looking for and observing the animals they are attempting to harvest, and coming up with a game plan on how they are going to harvest them. Biologists, the Game and Fish Departments, and many other wildlife agency s depend on hunters reports for accurate data in measuring the health of big game herds. When a hunter receives their tag in the mail, it usually will come with a blood testing kit. The Game and Fish started issuing these kits a few years ago in an attempt to track where the brucellosis disease was spreading to. • 11. Function, Structure, Synthesis And The Use Of The Protein... The purpose of this paper is to discuss the function, structure, synthesis and the use of the protein elastin (ELN), which encodes for one of the two elements of elastic fibers in the human body (NCBI 1). Addressing the fundamental aspects of the protein will allow us to explore the potential applications and implications of the protein if it has been modified. Introduction and Function Elastin is the one of the key components in the elastic property of tissues found in human tissues such as arteries, lungs, and elastic cartilage to name a few (Jacob, Sauvage, Osbourne 1). Elastin is mainly composed of amino acids glycine and proline, which are hydrophobic and are combined with lysine residues in crosslinks (NCBI 1). It plays a fundamental role in the recoil of tissues after being stretched, which is critical in maintaining the cells health (Weiss 1). Thirty percent of the dry weight of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in arteries is comprised of the protein elastin, hence, making it an essential part of human tissue (Krettek, Sukhova, Libby 1). Elastin can be found abundantly in the dermis of the skin, the arterial walls, the pulmonary tissues, which helps with the expansion of the lungs upon breathing and the recoil upon exhaling (Krettek, Sukhova, Libby 1). Elastin in the skin is elastic tissue intertwined with other components in the dermis through fibers that are interconnected (Krettek, Sukhova, Libby 1). The skin is dense with elastic tissue, which allows for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Genetic Engineering is a Process of Altering Genetic... INTRODUCTION: Genetic Engineering is a process where an organism s genetic material is altered by introducing a new DNA. It is where a gene is artificially removed from one organism and transmitted into another using biotechnology. Its goal is to provide with one or more traits that are not found in recipient organism, giving it the ability to perform a certain action, which the organism in nature cannot. DNA and proteins are very important aspects in order to understand genetic engineering. DNA is the genetic material that is found in every organism. It is located in the nucleus of every cell. It is made up of four complimentary bases, Adenine to Thymine and Guanine to Cytosine. These four bases help make the genetic code by providing information for the cell and essential proteins that an organism requires in order to survive. Some proteins act as enzymes that can help speed up the reaction. The genetic code is similar in every organism which benefits in the process of genetic engineering. When a gene is transmitted into the recipient organism through the means of transformation, the similarity of the code allows the recipient organism to express the specific trait. Some bacteria use transformation by acquiring the naked DNA from the environment and alter their genes by attaining new traits. Escherichia coli, also known as E.coli is a bacterium that lives in the intestine of warm blooded organisms that causes sickness and several diseases particularly in the weak ... • 18. The Effects Of Unicef On The World The Causes and Effects of UNICEF on the World Some of the main goals of UNICEF are Child Protection/Social Inclusion, Child Survival and Education. Child Protection is a critical goal in the world. Girls and boys are sensitive to abuse either by gender, race, or ethnic backgrounds. There is no discrimination in abuse, whether it be mental or physical. The rate of abuse is higher for children who are disabled or are orphaned. Most of these cases are rarely sought out, most kids are usually too scared to talk about what happened or even tell someone they know about the crimes that are occurring. This is because of the fact that most abuse is done by close family members or people they know. Sometimes, it even occurs in the school or workplaces ( Child ). There are many countries in poverty around the world. The UNICEF organization helps raise money to ensure the protection, safety, and education of children in over 100 countries. Children with disabilities are usually not talked about, they are the most ostracized group of children in society. They are not only not seen, but also not heard. There are about 93 million children with disabilities in the world, and every each one goes through discrimination/bullying due to their disability. These children are a lot less likely to go to school or receive any medical help. These children do not have a voice. The cause of this is that people do not want to take a disabled child seriously, resulting in disabled children all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. The Wife s Lament And The Seafarer Analysis The Similarities of The Wife s Lament and The Seafarer Life away from home can be hard, but imagine what it would be like if it was to a harsh sea or under a giant tree. In the two poems we will be dissecting, you will see how these two different situations have a lot in common. In one of the oldest poems known in the world, The Seafarer was written long by an unknown author. Throughout the poem we see how the man takes his exile emotionally and physically, all the while he sails the sea and world. He goes to other countries and shows how on his missions he sees amazing things, but he expresses how sad he is. In the second poem, The Wife s Lament, a woman is exiled to a cave by her husband, and she goes through all her thoughts and emotions, and she decides to get out her anger and heartbreak for her husband, she curses him while is out at sea. While we go through both of these poems, we will find differences between exiles. In The Seafarer, it isn t known whether the man was exiled, or if he willingly left his home. Throughout the poem you can see the way that the man holds himself together, and how he feels about the people on the land. This the man does not know for whom on land it turns out most favourably, how i, wretched and sorrowful, on the ice cold sea... In this line, we can see that the man is very angry about having to be out at sea. While he is out at sea, he talks about his family back at home that later help us connect The SeaFarer to The Wife s Lament. You can see how the mans actions and words were very Pagen at the beginning of the poem, but slowly transform into Christian values and words change by the end of the poem. This leads many people to believe that the original poem have been translated by high church member, because they were the only ones back then that were educated enough to read and write. If it were translated by a high ranking church member, it is possible that some of it might have been changed. As you move onto the second poem, The Wife s Lament, we look at an exile, through a different person s eyes. When the Wife is still on land, she is still exiled far away to a cave area under a great tree. Although she was not on the seas, she still found ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Analysis Of Dante s The Of Hell Jacob Barnett Essay#2 Reid Title I think Dante s description of Hell is a wonderful work of literature. Dante uses numerous literary techniques to describe his envisionment of Hell to the reader. In my opinion, one of the most affective techniques used by Dante is symbolism. It would be a very difficult task to compile a brief list of significant symbols from the Cantos that we read in class. Dante utilized many symbols throughout each canto. Some of the symbols that Dante used in Inferno are well defined and easy to interpret, while other symbols are much more difficult to recognize and understand. For this paper, I will be analyzing multiple symbols from Dante s Inferno. Some of the symbols came from the Canto s that were included in class readings while others were depicted throughout the Canto s that were not assigned readings. I found that one of the major symbols that reoccurred throughout the poem is the idea of a continuing journey. This was depicted in the very first line of the poem when Dante s life was compared to a road or pathway which Dante is halfway through. The specificity of the piece noting that Dante is halfway through further emphasizes the symbolism of continuing a journey by out rightly stating that he has begun but not yet finished. Therefore, when Dante strays from the intended path in the beginning of the first Canto he has symbolically strayed from the right kind of life . The reason I have chosen this is because I have been maintaining fish tanks for a couple of years now and have noticed that the plants grow different shades of green and at a faster or slower rate depending under which light source they are placed. I chose moss as it is a common fast growing plant that is quite hardy making it easier to see how the light effects it. I am interested to see the different results as I would like to start growing more expensive plants and want them to grow under the best conditions possible investigative question: Aquatic moss grows at a faster rate under natural sunlight rather than artificial light. Aim: At what rate will aquatic moss grow under a pink uv light, blue uv light and natural sunlight. hypothesis: Aquatic moss will grow at its quickest rate under a white uv light. Literature review: Lumens refer precisely to how much light a particular light source gives off, rather than how much energy it produces. Easy plants 15 25 lumen per litre, medium 25 50 lumen per litre, advanced 50 lumen per litre. Have an equal spread of lighting throughout tank as it decreases as it gets near the edges. Tourists can cause damage by disregarding signs prohibiting touching or littering. Parts of sites may need to be manipulated or even destroyed to allow for visitor access. Striking a balance between allowing the public to interact with a site and preserving it is very difficult. Some sites, like Bet She an in Israel, give tourists the freedom to touch monuments and even climb onto them to give the visitors authentic experiences, despite the damage it causes. Others, like Pompeii in Italy, keep tourists within certain bounds to protect the sites. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of replicating archaeological sites as ... Tourists also might take chips of stone from the site, as well as accidentally brush against the walls and frescoes, further increasing their rate of deterioration (Wallace 2013). In studies to understand the tourism of the site, it was discovered that many of these tourists damaging actions were not done maliciously, but out of a desire to experience the site. However, the open nature of Pompeii for tourists is also a leading cause in vandalism, graffiti and theft. Some of the vandalism involves scratching one s name into a wall and also stems from a desire to experience the site and tie it to one s self, but that does not make it any less unacceptable. Steps have been taken to restrict tourists to conserve parts of the site. The governing body for Pompeii has begun issuing new tickets that allow for tourists to visit cities such as Herculaneum and Stabiae, to reduce the pressure on Pompeii. The boat which you are to build, its dimensions must be equal to each other: (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI). Similarly God says to Noah; I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence because of them; now I am going to destroy them along with the earth. Causes, And The Cause And Effect Of The Outsiders Conare Lucas 11/1/17 Prof Philip Titan Cause and Effect Essay When people first start reading a book there is one burning question: What is this story about? It s a heavy question, especially for a fiction novel with so many fabricated details. You can fix this by saying a story is all about decisions. Of course, there are other themes, but the entire story is connected by the questions characters ask themselves and the outcome of their own answers. We can think about how this mimics real life. How every day we are forced to consider life s chance situations; some casual, some pressing, but all of them impacting our final growth as people and those around us to some degree. A good example of this is when in the book The Outsiders , our protagonist Jonny decided to kill Bob in self defense, this resulted in Jonny and Ponyboy going on the run. The decisions, the choices, that were made by Jonny change the course of his and his cohort s entire lives in an instant directing the whole final tale and story outcome. The second piece of conversation that is revealed to the reader is that Lil had spent money that Albert gave her for dental repairs to purchase abortion pills. The response from the friend mirrors that of Eliot s own view of marriage; she asks, What you get married for if you don t want children? (163). Eliot s traditional view held that the purpose of sex in a marriage is procreation alone. This is, of course, no longer the purpose of sex when The Wasteland is written. Therefore, when Eliot writes about the horrendous nature of relationships of modern times he paints Lil who embodies women on the whole as the cause for the futility of relationships. He believes that a woman should return to the honorable, traditional position of mother and spouse, subsequently, when Lil aborts her fetus she is abolishing the custom that he ... • 36. Anne Frank, Nelson Mandela And Louis Zamperini After reading many stories about people being incarcerated by their environments, you would think they would just accept it or give up. Shockingly in many of the stories I ve read the exact opposite happens and they fight through these tough situations and always manage to stay positive no matter what is thrown at them. Anne Frank, Nelson Mandela and Louis Zamperini are perfect examples of people who were physically and emotionally incarcerated and they never let it bring them down. Instead, they used their incarceration as motivation to better the situation they were in. Reading many of the poems in class really gives you a sense of how a person is feeling in such little words. It describes the environment around them, how they are dealing with is and what their thoughts are on it. A poem I feel does incredibly well with this this Some Advice to Those Who Will Serve Time in Prison . This poem describes a man in prison with a lot of time to serve and how he feels about it. He describes prison as making him start to lose himself and how much it really affects his outlook on life. Prison makes him feel powerless and like he has no control of his life because he can t make decisions for himself anymore. He can t control when he eats, showers or even when he wakes up in the morning, basically the only thing he can control is how he deals with this new way of life. He says [p]art of you may live alone inside, / like a stone at the bottom of a well (Judith Tannenbaum, 19). This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Long Fuse Notes Essay Truth and the Historian Main argument This is both an introduction to the book and an essay about the causes of World War I, as seen by other historical writers and Lafore himself. He states that World War I has become a fashion and a fad, and, while there is nothing wrong with the topic being widely discussed, historians should be careful in using research and analyzing historical topics. The introduction outlines the sources of the conflict that later was known as the Great War. All of the events: hostilities between the great powers, competition for the sea, and expansionism: were what has led to that conflict. But Lafore also argues that no cause can be singled out as the most important, because they all contributed to the ... • 38. Women In Aldous Huxley s A Brave New World Aldous Huxley foresaw a great number of feats in his novel, but it seems that he saw no kind of liberation for women at any point in the near or distant future. In fact, despite the dystopic nature of Huxley s novel, he instead created a futuristic world that is hauntingly similar to our own. The only difference being that Hover cars actually do exist. Upon first glance, the story seems liberating, uplifting, and in every sense of the word, futuristic. But as you delve further into the novel you become blinded by the blatant misogyny that holds this dull, unadventurous story together. Brave New World is predictably centred around Alpha plus rebels, the over privileged men who fight the system but meet their fortunate downfall at some point ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you were to walk into any government, court house, or police firm, you would find an overwhelming amount of men filling up positions more times than not. You might say that oh, but men are more fitted to those jobs! Women don t know how to be a police officer, judge, prime minister, but that s only because we have never been given the chance. And if, like Julia Gillard perhaps, we do happen to break through the misogynistic barriers of society, we would be relentlessly ridiculed, even if we were more successful than any man before us. But Huxley s lack of femme fatale doesn t stop him from portaying the few female characters in a non favourable way. The only memorable female characters in the book, Lenina and Linda, were both semi perfectly conditioned Betas, which gives the impression that women are single sided and lack distinguishing characteristics. What s more is that Huxley doesn t mention a single female Alpha plus nor World Leader; apparently the top of the food chain is not where women belong. The Alpha plus males of Huxley s novel seem to be the only ones rebelling against the New World order. They are the only group capable of being unhappy, unorthodox, and rebellious. And they are definitely the only ones praised for those very things. Despite the caste system and the belief that everyone is happy now, the elites of Huxley s book are still trying to break the barrier. Even though they are the most privelleged people in society. This shows that a polymer has small units called monomers in its chemical composition which are bound together to form a large molecule. Depending on the arrangement of different chains and how they are joined, polymers can be classified as:  Thermoplastics  Thermosets  Elastomers 1.2 Types of Polymers replacing Metallic Components in Consumer Application: To make our lives considerably easier, home appliances use circuit control, safety devices and resistance lead. Use of polymer is increasing day by day due to the following reasons:  Design freedom: it is very easy to mold polymers in any shape and form like injection molding and blow molding at a very low cost. Polymers can be treated with chemicals to bring out multiple properties in them which is not possible easily with metals.  Performance: polymers have high benefits. They reduce the weight, resistant to chemical and impact, corrosion free, etc. the main reason for the use of polymers is the reduction in weight.  Efficiency: due to metal replacement there is an increase in manufacturing efficiency as multiple individual components in a product can be brought together into a single component using ... • 41. The Effects Of Psychological Counseling On Pregnant Women... The Poster session was very informative, it had various topics that had information on relevant health issues. One the posters that caught my attention was To explore the impact of psychological counseling on pregnant women who are at high risk for carrying a fetus with down syndrome by Fatima Riaz. The aim of that study was to research the impact of psychological counseling on pregnant women who were 35 years old or above which are at a high risk of having a child born with Down syndrome. The objective was to minimize the anxiety and psychological stress mothers endure after receiving those abnormal test results. One of the things I personally learned was that its an issue that is indeed relevant, I was told by the presenter that 95% of pregnant women terminate their pregnancy once they are informed through screening that their child will be born with Down Syndrome. The other poster presentation that caught my attention was Evaluating parents perception of the effects of dental sealants on children from ages 3 12 years by Zarmina Sajjad. The objective of this study was to explore parent s knowledge of dental sealants as a preventive care in children. According to a surveillance system called Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program, genetic birth defects, affect approximately 3% of childbirths in the United States. While Down syndrome cannot be inherited, the number of babies with Down syndrome born each year is alarming. Despite the fact that Down syndrome can be detected before birth, there is no known way to cure it. As such, the parents whose child have been diagnosed to have Down syndrome have to decide whether to keep the child or not. Parenting has never been easy, and it is made harder if the child is affected by Down syndrome. Most of the time, when parents are informed that their child has Down syndrome, they are stricken with grief, depression, hopelessness, and the likes. (Preidt, 2010). Having a child affected by such mental illnesses may make it hard for parents to deal with their children, since any shortcomings may lead to a miserable life for their child. But even with Down syndrome, a child is still a child, and can still be brought up to live a happy life if parented correctly. I propose categorizing the requirements into functional requirements, operational requirements, technical requirements, and transitional requirements. The functional requirements define how the user thinks the system is functioning overall, the operational requirements define what background processes need to be executed in order for the system to work optimally over a period of time, the technical requirements define what technical issues that must be addressed in order to successfully implement the system, and the transitional requirements define the processes or steps needed to implement the system smoothly and successfully. It has only been in very recent years that laws and attitudes regarding psychedelics have changed enough to allow for research to resume. During this time, evidence has been found to suggest that there is an unlocked potential of psychedelics to lower rates of mental illness in many sufferers; treating depression, PTSD, OCD and several anxiety disorders. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In humans, DMT is thought to be produced by the lungs (Mandel et al., 1972) and by the pineal gland (Cozzi et al., 2011), where it also acts to influence mood, perception and thought. DMT is synthesized from the enzymatic conversion of L tryptophan, which is produced endogenously in plants and is an essential amino acid in animals, to tryptamine, which is then converted to N methyltryptamine, the final precursor for N,N Dimethyltryptamine (Axelrod, 1961). DMT non selectively binds to 5 HT serotonin receptors acting as an agonist or antagonist predominantly in the prefrontal cortex (Strassman, 1996), an area of the brain responsible for mood and emotional processing (Yang and Raine, 2009). As previously mentioned, it s been observed that depressed patients have reduced activity in the prefrontal cortex (Gibb, 2012), so activating this area as well as bringing further release of serotonin is what s thought to treat the depression and increase connections between emotions, actions and thoughts. The psychological benefits gained from this can be profound for some individuals as DMT often promotes the development of personal insights and self knowledge. DMT can be taken externally via inhalation, injection or oral ingestion in which it is more commonly known as ayahuasca, a traditional brew used by many cultures throughout history in cultural and spiritual practices (Osório et al., 2015). • 46. My Definition Essay The best part about being a human being is our ability to look into ourselves, and see both the good and the bad. Sometimes we might see traits that we love about ourselves, and other times we might only see things we hate, but we should be able to see that all of it is good. This good comes from God making us in God s image; by doing this God gives us inherent dignity, and value. And just as Bonaventure says we can use our internal reflections like a mirror to see God. This idea really struck me while I was reading, there is no way am I a mirror to see God. To praise God I have to appreciate that first my wittiness helps to bring out more of my outgoing nature. Because when I first meet someone again it might be an awkward situation, but by making a joke I m able to alleviate some of that tension, and get the ball rolling on our hopeful friendship. Secondly, I have to take my wit for what it is, and as one of God s gifts to me I have an obligation to try and alleviate the suffering of others by making them laugh. It is clear that there was a strong, ruling class and a lower group containing mostly the common people. Below him were the local chiefs and controllers who looked after administrative duties. The safety of the state was the responsibility of the Lawagetas, the head of the army.
