The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
The Catcher in the Rye is a popular novel written by J.D. Salinger. Published in 1951, the book was
originally written for adults, but it is now remembered and adored by people from all parts of the
world and people from all walks of life especially by teenagers a likely effect that was only inevitable
considering the center stage of the narrator the great crumby flake Holden Caulfield, to use his style of
speaking, who accurately portrayed teenage angst and loneliness in a style that many youngsters could
and do relate to.1 The book is about his quest to find himself after being threatened with expulsion at
the expensive prep school that he attends. Selling millions upon millions of copies and inspiring all
sorts of people from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But it isn t easy to determine the length of this double standard because of the scarcity of good, honest
conversations and discussions about and with other men and boys throughout the book. Caulfield s
trials and tribulations have a heavy emphasis on women and girls, so that is why much of the info on
this lens naturally lens towards discussions on feminine social standards from his perspective. There
are many women and girls that Holden Caulfield talks about, talks to, and thinks about throughout the
novel. For further analysis on his relationships with them, they can be divided into three categories:
figures of authority, lovers, and family. Caulfield s own mother would have been the character of
choice for the first category, but since there is a scarce amount of conversation with her we ll have to
default to the next most talkative female authority figure: the mother of a fellow classmate named
Ernest Morrow. He met the woman on a commuter rail heading to New York from Caulfield s school
dorm in Pencey Prep in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. She initiated a conversation with him after she
noticed a school sticker on one of his suitcases. They mostly discussed about the school and about
Ernest Morrow s personality and behavior, and of course the usual motherly inquiry of whether or not
they were friends. Although Caulfield ended up giving his name as a non existent Rudolf Schmidt, the
key thing to point out was that this six page talk

Fayol s “Principles” in a University Library
In reading through Management Basics for Information Professionals by Evans and Ward, one of the
theories of management that stood out to me was the administrative approach (2007). Henry Fayol
was one of the main proponents of this approach, though there were many others as well. Fayol
divided organizational activities into five major groups and also identified 14 principles of
management and believed that management is a skill one can learn, rather than a talent received at
birth (Evans Ward, 2007). In the context of my personal experience I found that it might be interesting
to compare my experiences as a student employee in the UC Berkeley library to some of the more
applicable aspects of Fayol s principles of management. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another of Fayol s principles had to do with authority and responsibility. In the department of the
main stacks, there was a staff librarian who acted as our manager, as well as a group of students that
performed supervisory tasks. In my last year or so in the library I joined this group, and was given the
task of doing some of the day to day tasks that kept our department running. These included opening
and closing procedures, keeping statistics of the work done by students, assigning hourly jobs,
training, and so on. The important idea in this principle is that giving orders and being responsible
must go together (Evans Ward, 2007). I would argue that in our department, while we were
responsible for making sure the work was done as well as assigning jobs, if there was a difficult
situation the supervisors were able to refer to the staff librarian for support. For example, if one
student was chronically underperforming or late, we would notify the librarian. If one considered the
group of supervisors plus the librarian who managed us to make up the management of the
department, then in whole authority and responsibility did go together. I would also say that instead of
thinking of student supervisors as not being as responsible as they could be, it would be more
plausible to say that the hourly assignment of jobs and other such tasks were ones that were delegated
to them by the librarian, because while he was more responsible, there was no way that he could

The Between Modern And Modern Science
The passage of knowledge using the modernized ways of communication when well applied can
uphold the introduction of language and still promote the experience in learning. Many types of
research are underway on how the teaching of communication techniques away from the source is
possible but still there is a clue on how the local language of communication in China has been taught
to people at the far place. The research has shown the significance of modern science in those that are
being introduced to the Chinese parlance. It has explained how the modern science has been used to
support passage of information and knowledge through blending online personal study and active
classes. The scrutiny aims at giving a new understanding of how the learning of the Chinese language
far from the source. To distribute the experiences on how to use modern science in educating and
learning. To evaluate the association between the modern sciences, teaching and learning. In the last
decade the rapid growth in knowledge and the modern science, the availability of movable gargets,
applications and encoded instructions have altered the forms of language learning. Faced with ever
rising range and types of new modern sciences, the programmers and tutors are encountered with
strategies of teaching and modern scientific choices so as to guarantee that the technology promotes
the learning experiences and assist in attaining the education goals in high school Mandarin class. The

Nozick s Theory Of False Reality
Our perception of the world around us is entirely dependant on the validity of reality. Our world could
be produced or simulated by some sort of machine, or life is actually just a dream someone dreamt up
one night. Reality is dependent on our perception, which is affected by what truly exists. Meaning that
if we, as a single person, are the only thing that actually exists, then that proves that reality is indeed
not real. But considering this point is considered Solipsism, there s enough evidence to go against it.
Disproving solipsism is the key to support the idea that reality is real. The philosophical theory of a
false reality can be traced all the way back to Plato s Allegory of the Cave, where 3 prisoners are
trapped in a cave and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And if that is the case, then there is a good chance that other people don t exist as well. Of course,
even if the world around us isn t true, humanity could all be under the same illusion. As Hilary Putnam
puts it, Instead of having just one brain in a vat, we could imagine that all human beings (perhaps all
sentient beings) are brains in a vat (or nervous systems in a vat in case some beings with just nervous
systems count as sentient ). Of course, the evil scientist would have to be outside? or would he?
Perhaps there is no evil scientist, perhaps (though this is absurd) the universe just happens to consist
of automatic machinery tending a vat full of brains and nervous systems. This time let us suppose that
the automatic machinery is programmed to give us all a collective hallucination, rather than a number
of separate unrelated hallucinations. Thus, when I seem to myself to be talking to you, you seem

Fluoride harm or benefit?
Fluoride plays an important role in the formation of teeth, but an excess of it is very toxic and can
cause irreversible damage to the structure of the enamel fluorosis. Depending on the extent of the teeth

The Physics Of A Wind Tunnel
A wind tunnel is a key instrument used by Aerospace engineers to accurately measure the
aerodynamic forces and moment on an aircraft model. The aerodynamic forces and moments that the
model experience then can be compared to the real life conditions that an aircraft experiences in real
time. An important in tool that allows us to find these different force is the L.A. Comp wind tunnel s
pyramidal balance. This kind of balance allows aerospace engineers to measure all the force: lift, drag,
and side force; as well as all the moments: pitching, yawing, and rolling [1]. Figure 1, you are able to
see where each of these forces are action and along which axis.
Figure 1: Forces and Moments on an Aircraft
It is important to understand where all these forces and moments are acting on an aircraft to
understand how each one affects and aircraft. A crucial step before actually gathering these force and
moments is to calibrate our balance.
The objective of this experiment was to calibrate the L.A. Comp wind tunnel and to develop
calibration plots that will later be used in future experiments.
The L. A. Comp wind tunnel is a closed circuit wind tunnel that has been at the University of
Oklahoma. It is a subsonic wind tunnel powered by a 400hp electric motor that spins three seven foot
propeller at a constant speed. The speed of the air in this wind tunnel is adjusted by the pitch of the
propellers adjusted by a hydraulics. The L.A. Comp wind tunnels usually operates at 150mph. The test

Comparing Dziga Vertov s Film, Man with a Movie Camera...
Comparing Dziga Vertov s Film, Man with a Movie Camera and Run Lola Run
The main and essential thing is : the sensory exploration of the world through film. We therefore take
as a point of departure the use of the camera as a keno eye, more perfect than the human eye, for the
exploration of the chaos of visual phenomena that fills space.
Dziga Vertov , Manifesto The Council of Three (1923)
The innovative theories and filmmaking techniques of Dziga Vertov revolutionized the way films are
made today. Man With a Movie Camera (1929), a documentary that represented the peak of the Soviet
avant garde film movement in the twenties, displayed techniques in montage, creative camera angles,
rich imagery, but most importantly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

(41 Vertov)
His original ways of thinking, isolated him from all other filmmakers. Even his style of using montage
(editing style commonly used by Soviet directors) in Man with a Movie Camera was very different. In
this film, hours of footage are edited together in many cuts, which is the style that Vertov is well
known for. His cuts are very rapid and he displays them accordingly to music to add excitement to the
sequence. The sequences act on all three levels of montage: narrative, intellectual, and emotional. For
example in the beginning of Man with a Movie Camera, there is a sequence in a theatre where the
cameraman sets up the film for the audience to watch (appendix 1). The lights come on, the seats go
down, the cameraman sets up the projector, the audience enters, the lights dim, the orchestra awaits
and then the manifest begins. The narration comes from the editor throughout the whole film. The
cameraman cannot possibly be the narrator since he is randomly out of frame and it is a silent film.
From the very beginning... the centrality of the cameraman s vision is put into question, since he
moves out

China By Anja Manuel Analysis
In chapters four through six, Anja Manuel focuses on the gap between the rich and poor, corruption,
and the disruption in age differences in the work force. The issues that unravel in these two countries
are extremely important to the United States because the US helps in supplying resources for the poor.
The US is therefore left to decide whether or not to continue subsidizing these countries or leaving
them to pick up their own economic mess. The truth is that the United States has the power to make
important and necessary changes to these working conditions. Since the US often uses these countries
for production, they have the opportunity to offer better benefits and conditions to their workers which
could cause an exciting, positive chain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In China, corruption is so apparent that often people are disincentivized to owning businesses because
permits and consultants cost too much and require bribes. Yet, bribes can cost the economy big money
because essentially the corrupt businessmen are taking the money away from public services (111).
The issues coming up in the future are that the governments that are corrupt might have negative
impacts on other global economies and spread the norm of corruption. Yet, both countries do show the
will to purify the Party which includes newly implemented rules against gluttony, adultery, and even
playing golf under the leadership of Wang Qishan (113). In China a bigger issue is also the fact that
the public is becoming increasingly involved in corruption scandals. Officials worry people will get
carried away with excessive accusations (115). More issues stem from the type of political system that
China has; they employ a nominal legal system that runs at the discretion of the Party leadership so
this means that whoever is in power can change the entire political ideals. In India, they are based on a
historical British political system with anticorruption laws but these laws are often not enforced. Yet,
even when they are enforced, trials in case can last for up to a decade (116). In India, they are making
moves to help out their corruption issues. They implemented the Aadhaar program

The Patterns Of Teen Drug Abuse
A pattern that we ve seen erupt over the last couple of years is the habit of teenagers and young adults
falling prey to party drugs, there s been a sense of normalcy placed along with a pill popping culture,
you ll notice rappers almost romanticizing and influencing teenagers into experimenting with
prescription drugs. What most people don t take into consideration before consuming these drugs is
that most prescription opioids have addictive side effects, that when taken in long term or copious
amounts can cause the user to experience withdrawals and ultimately draw them back in a continuous
cycle. Most would say, why can t they just not take the drugs? Or claim it was the users fault because
they know better. While they are not entirely right, it s not wrong either. Research shows that a large
majority of teens will find themselves in a position where they will be offered drugs before the age of
14 at a party, this decision will ultimately affect their life in the long run, be it becoming a social
outcast from their peers for not trying these drugs, or taking them and developing an addiction that
will surely harm their bodies before they ve truly became adults.
Teen drug overdose is an issue that dates back over multiple generations, with each finding their own
ways to get recreational highs. However, there was a significant increase in death from years 1999 to
2007 within age groups 15 19(1). As time goes on, higher percentages of teens experiment with

Inca Principal Beliefs
Principal Beliefs
The Incas were fundamentally the leading class of the Emperor s family, who existed as the
mythological ancestors Manco Capac and Mama Occla. The Inca people consisted of the South
American Indians who ruled an empire that spanned from the northern border of modern Ecuador, to
Mendoza in west central Argentina and the Maule river in central Chile. The Incas have been
estimated to have ruled over 12,000,000 people who spoke at least 20 different languages.
The Inca society believed that the rich and the poor shouldn t interact with each other because of their
social differences and was despised of by the emperor. At that time education was only available for

Mama Cocha has the power to control the amount of fish in the ocean, the prevention of storms and

The moon goddess, Mama Quilla, was commonly known as both, Inti s wife and sister. Women were
the main worshipers of Mama Quilla because of the belief that she had power over their menstrual
cycles and marriages. In the event of a lunar eclipse, the people thought it meant that she was being
attacked by an animal and in response, would throw their weapons, such as spears, bow arrows, slings,
clubs and axes, at the moon to try and stop the animal. Mama Quilla was most often represented and
recognized as a silver disc because the people of the Inca religion believed that the metal silver was

The Fight For African American Independence
In this episode we learned about the struggle for Africa s independence. The fight for colonial
independence was much more complex than appeared on the surface. The Africans wanted their land
back and the colonists wanted to keep their newly acquired land, but it was not that simple or easy.
Once the Africans got their independence they could not be separated from their home countries.
Intricate ties between the colonies and home countries they could not be so easily broken. This
element in my opinion is one of the reasons the fight for freedom in Africa lasted so long.
I never realized just how many hundreds of thousands of Africans were drafted during WWII. In
addition, I never realized how much hope they were filled with when the Atlantic Charter was passed.
Hope that came when hearing that within it, it said that each person has a right and the everyone
should be respected. However, when peace came, nothing seemed to be different ... Show more

Portugal hung on to their rule even after other colonies began to be liberated. The liberation wars were
long and painful for both sides. Some Africans thought they would never be independent and always
be bound by the colonies. When they finally stood up and formed an army to fight back, they insisted
that they were not a political army ; instead that they were instruments for independence, armed
militants and how after they achieved their goal they would go back to cultivating the soil. Portugal
did multiple horrible acts including assassinating their leader at the time. However, their worse act
was when they wiped out an entire village during the war, and even today only grim remains remain
where the village once stood. Then after all of that they stayed behind to help. I feel like its crazy that
after such a long struggle either one of the sides would want anything to do with each

Effect of Organic Farming on Soil Nutrients and Structure
Works Cited Missing
Since the 1970s, the agribusiness and agrochemical industries have been aware of a growing problem:
as the global population soars, soils around the world are becoming less suitable for farming as a
result of erosion, nutrient depletion, and structural degradation. In the United States, about 60,000
farmers have abandoned the conventional system which relies on chemical fertilizers and pesticides,
and adopted the organic farming systems that allowed areas of China and India to be successfully
farmed for 4,000 years (Reganold et al., 1990, p. 112). Organic farmers use plant matter and animal

370). While humic matter has some intrinsic water storing properties, it is possible that some of the
increased water levels are a result of the erosion of finer particles on the conventional farm, which lost
32.4 ton/ha of topsoil a year, four times that of the organic farm (Reganold et al., 1987, p. 371).
Jordahl and Karlen (1993) observed that the soil on a conventional Iowa farm had significantly less
silt and clay than a similar soil from an adjacent organic farm, suggesting that the fine materials had
been eroded away (p. 29).
The high humus levels are responsible for the erosion resistance documented on organic farms. High
levels of organic matter increases aggregate stability, which prevents erosion, allows for easier water
and mechanical (such as plow and root) penetration, and better aeration. Soil aggregates are stabilized
primarily by micro organisms and polysaccharides, a product of many bacteria. Experiments by
Molope and Page (1986) indicate that fungi play a key role in binding soil particles together. In the
development of aggregates, fungi mycelia (root like structures) provide the initial support in the first
six days of ped development after disaggregation (from oxidation as a result of plowing or heavy rain)
(p. 236.) After six days, other processes are thought to take over, primarily the adhesive binding of
polysaccharides,

The Study of Motivation Essay
Literature Review
Motivation
MacIntyre et al. (2001) define motivation as an attribute of the individual describing the psychological
qualities underlying behavior with respect to a particular task (p. 463). The study of motivation as a
predictor of second language learning performance was initiated by Gardner and his Canadian
colleagues (1972).
According to Gardner and Lambert (1972), there are two kinds of motivation: integrative motivation,
referring to a holistic learning approach toward the speech and culture of the target language group,
and instrumental motivation, referring to language learning for more immediate or practical goals.
Intrinsic and extrinsic are the new classifications of motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the ... Show

Both types are important. A learner might learn an L2 well with an integrative motivation or with an
instrumental one, or indeed with both (Cook, 1991). . The level of identification with bilingual or
trilingual identity is also influenced by the learners attitudes toward the learning situation. These
attitudes refer to the individuals reactions to anything associated with the immediate context (e.g., the
course and the teaching environment) in which the language is taught (Gardner, 1985).All the men
show higher instrumental motivation towards foreign language learning than woman.
Instrumental motivation, also called rational, pragmatic and utilitarian, refers to the individual s desire
to acquire a second language in order to use it for operational purposes, to pass an examination,
acquire a job, or visit a foreign country (ibid). Rahman explains rational language learning as the
learning of a language in order to empower oneself by acquiring the potential to acquire employment
(2002). . It has been pointed out that Gardner s motivation theory includes an educational dimension
and that, the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB), that he and his colleagues developed contains
several items focusing on the learner s evaluation of the teacher and classroom learning situation.
Gardner and MacIntyre (1991) themselves had noted later that the old characterization of motivation

many people. The steam railroad was another form of transportation that was introduced in 1835 and it
was a better form of transportation because it moved quicker and could hold many more passengers,
but it was also expensive and didn t always take the people to where they wanted to go because it didn

There were land changes that occurred during the second half of the 19th century such as the South

Apart from holding a stable market position, data from Mintel demonstrates that John Lewis s market

As the diagram shows, John Lewis s share in the retail market was constantly increasing from 2005 to

Many people begin to spend money on many products to enhance themselves to feel more beautiful.
We tend to try to hide the imperfections on our body to conform to society s rules on what makes
someone more beautiful than one another. These things include covering up skin with make up to hide
the pimples and wearing clothing that cover up parts of the skin that we may not want other people to
view. Also straightening the hair and painting our nails to cover the imperfections that society tends to
puts on us. This cause us to start changing into someone to please how the society views us as a
whole. However as we continue to develop as individuals we tend to say that beauty is only skin deep.
The truth is that everyone is different or unique in their own way and if you can overlook a person
physical appearance and look deep down into recognizing a person inner qualities you will find that
beauty is more than what meets the eye. Beauty will always be in the eye of the beholder because
everyone sees something beautiful in every individual. True beauty comes from within and you should

yourself to unreasonable and unachievable levels of personal expectation. I will then suggest that this
becomes even more counter intuitive when you become aware that you cannot even guarantee you
would achieve the good life should you manage to meet the expectations you are placing on yourself. I
will argue instead that you are better off trying to focus on something else within reach and within
which you have a better chance of living your own good life and achieving your goals of being a good
person the helping of others.
In his Nicomachean ethics Aristotle suggests that virtue is a purposive disposition, lying in a mean that
is relative to us ... and by that which a prudent man would use to determine it (Aristotle. et al., 2004:
Book II). This in itself brings the concept of Aristotelian virtue to its most concerning trait; if doing
what is virtuous is to do as a virtuous person would then we are given little direction as to what to do,
especially on a circumstantial basis, beyond a difficult to define idea of what a virtuous person would
do . This becomes a problem when we are faced with difficult real world scenarios and turn to ideas of
virtue and

Similarities And Differences Between The Scottish And...
Even though there are many similarities between the Scottish and Irish cultures, there are also many
differences. For one, the Scottish have trouble defining what Scottish culture is, this is because they
joined the UK at a very early time. Because of this, much of Scottish culture has joined together with
English culture. This could be seen when we were walking around Glasgow and saw many English
Art and sculptures, as well as walking around the Holyrood house in Edenborough. And now that
Scotland may break away from England, the people cling to fantasy and mystery, as well as their own
accomplishments to create and define Scottish culture. In Glasgow, the Peoples Palace displayed many
accomplishments of the cities people, all stating that they were the first to invent this and the first to
do that. Instead of looking back, the city showed how it was progressive and urged its people to move
forward. In Edenborough, the tour guide talked about how they were the first to invent skyscrapers
and other architecture. Instead of talking about how the country moved forward as a whole, each city
talked about how they moved forward and the people in it. Scotland has also clung to many
mythological and fantasy ideals. For one, the national animal of Scotland is the Unicorn, which is a
mythological creature. Also, during the ghost tour I took around Edenborough, the Scottish believe
that they invented Halloween and the city is filled with ghost stories. Even in the north, Loch

The City Of Karratha Region Of North East Western Australia
The City of Karratha is in the Pilbara region of north east Western Australia. It was renamed from the
Shire of Roebourne to the City of Karratha on the 1st of July 2014. The surrounding region contains
the Burrup Peninsula an area filled with petroglyphs, engravings in the rock which have been around
for over 30,000 years. This is evidence of occupation of the Aboriginal people in this area and may
even show a sign of the world s first counting system.
The mining industry in the area has boomed, and the City of Karratha is now home to many people
working in the industry. The iron ore in the area is of particular interest.
The Burrup Peninsula is not particularly cared for. There are acts of vandalism by tourists and locals
alike who sign their names on prehistoric artworks unfortunately, this can damage the rock art and can
cover the artwork that proves human inhabitancy from over 30,000 years ago. Vandalism would be
bad enough for the rock art alone but the Western Australian government shows no signs of stopping
its approval of the many mining developments in the region. Unfortunately, this rock art cannot be
replaced or removed without serious damage the whole area is rich in resources, so the mining
developments could be moved, or at least new developments approved away from these sites.
In several cases petroglyphs have been removed for the sake of mining in the Burrup Peninsula. For
example, approximately 150 petroglyphs were removed to make room for a natural

break it down the jet releases water vapor and when it s coming out of the engine it quickly condenses

The Effects Of Antidepressant Pills On Teenagers And...

AP English
9 February 2016
Teenagers and Antidepressants In recent discussions of antidepressant pills a controversial issue has
been whether doctors should prescribe antidepressants to teenagers. Antidepressant pills are prescribed
to
individuals who suffer from a condition called Major Depression Disorder, labeled MDD for
abbreviation. Major Depressive Disorder is a mental disorder characterized by a pervasive and
persistent low mood that is accompanied by low self esteem and by loss of interest or pleasure in
normally enjoyable activities. The objectives of antidepressant pills are to stabilize, and
normalize the abnormal low levels of brain chemicals for those who suffer from MDD. On the
other hand, some argue that antidepressants are harmful and do a disadvantage to teenagers,
therefore should not be prescribed to them. However, others argue that the pills are not harmful
and in some cases the strong need of antidepressants outweigh the risks the pills might provide.
Antidepressants prevent teenagers from recuperating on their own and prevents them from
learning how to cope with conflicts thus, they should not be prescribed.
Depression results in symptoms such as sadness, it affects a person s emotions and leads
to both emotional and physical problems. The antidepressant pills are meant to help the brain
recuperate and adjust to normality. The reason why people reconsider taking the pills in the first
place is

Essay on Globalization and Human Trafficking
Trafficking in human beings is now the fastest growing business of organized crime. Men, women and
children are trafficked within their own countries and across international borders. More than one
person is smuggled across a border every minute which is the equivalent to ten jumbo jets every single
day. And the trade earns twice as much as the Coca Cola brand. (STOP THE TRAFFIK 2014)
According to estimates, more than 700,000 people are trafficked every year for the purposes of sexual
exploitation and forced labour. They are transported across borders and sold into modern day slavery.
Over the past decade, trafficking in human beings has reached epidemic proportions. No country is

Although human trafficking is the fastest growing process by which a person is enslaved, it is also the
fastest growing international crime and one of the largest growing incomes for organised crime. It is
estimated that at least 12.3 million people are victims of forced labour worldwide. Of these 2.4 million
are as a result of human trafficking. Consequently it 1.2 million children are trafficked every year.
(STOP THE TRAFFIK 2014) Six hundred thousand to eight hundred thousand men, women and
children are trafficked across international borders each year. Approximately eighty percent are
women and children and up to half of them are minors. Predominantly the vast majority of trafficked
people come from the poorest countries and the poorest strata of the national people. Human
trafficking is the second largest source of illegal income, being surpassed by drugs trafficking. Some
trafficking groups have been reported to be switching their cargo from drugs to human beings, in a
search of high profits at a lower risk. (STOP THE TRAFFIK 2014)
Trafficking affects every continent and most countries. Every country is affected by human trafficking
whether they are an origin country in which people are trafficked from, a transit country where people
are trafficked through or a destination where people are trafficked to. (Masika 2007)

A Single Story Analysis
When Adichie refers to a single story, she is describing that a person or group of people may be
disillusioned due to their lack of exposure to other perspectives and ideas. For instance, Adichie states
that when she read American and European storybooks as a child, all of the characters were of the
white race and exemplified white characteristics, leading to an ignorant and close minded depiction of
the world. Moreover, when Adichie began reading African literature, she found that people like me,
girls with skin the color of chocolate, whose kinky hair could not form ponytails, could also exist in
literature (Adichie 1:07). This illustrates that in both African and European literature, characterization
is limited to the demographics known to the writers, the story is restricted based on one s viewpoint.
Furthermore, the danger in simply reading or writing a single story is that over time, a person, or
group of people, can become bias due to their lack of exposure to cultural and ethnical diversity. For
example, Adichie describes that when she met the family of Fide, her houseboy, and saw that one of
Fide s brothers had woven a beautiful basket she was taken aback because it had become impossible
for me to see them as anything else but poor. Their poverty was my single story for them (Adichie
3:43). This seemingly minor misconception exposes Adichie to the dangers of following a single story
, a reality check which changed her perception of the world. Furthermore, the

Ludwig Van Beethoven Essay
The composer of some of the most influential pieces of music ever
written, Ludwig van Beethoven created a bridge between the 18th century
classical period and the new beginnings of Romanticism. His greatest
breakthroughs in composition came in his instrumental work, including
his symphonies. Unlike his predecessor Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for whom
writing music seemed to come easily, Beethoven always struggled to
perfect his work.
Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, and was baptized on
Dec. 17, 1770. (There is no record of his birth date.) His father and
grandfather worked as court musicians in Bonn. Ludwig s father, a
singer, gave him his early musical training. Although he had only meager ... Show more content on

Beethoven was convinced that the condition not only was permanent, but
was getting progressively worse. He spent that summer in the country and
wrote what has become known as the quot;Heiligenstadt Testament. quot; In the
document, apparently intended for his two brothers, Beethoven expressed
his humiliation and despair. For the rest of his life he searched for a
cure, but by 1819 his deafness had become total. Afterward, in order to
have conversations with his friends, Beethoven had them write down their
questions and replied orally.
Beethoven never married. Though he had many friends, he seemed to be
a lonely man. He continued to appear in public but spent more and more
of his time working on his compositions. He lived in various villages
near Vienna and took long walks carrying sketchbooks in which he would
write down his musical ideas. Scholars who have studied these
sketchbooks have discovered the agonizingly long process that the
composer went through in order to perfect his melodies, harmonies, and
instrumentations.
Three Periods of Work
Most critics divide Beethoven s work into three general periods,
omitting the earliest years of his apprenticeship in Bonn. Although some
pieces do not fit exactly into the scheme, these divisions can be used
to categorize the composer s work.
The first period, from 1794 to about 1800, consists of music whose

Nicki Minaj Objectification
This essay will argue that Nicki Minaj s hit song, Anaconda , is a prime example emphasising the
objectification of woman specifically within the music industry. What makes Anaconda significant in

Listening to Nicki Minaj s Anaconda for the very first time as a recommendation from a friend, my

cases include artists such as Chris Brown, Drake and Lil Wayne. To summarise the song/music video

Nommo Literature Review
Nommo is the generating and sustaining powers of the creative word, which is manifested in
characteristics of African orality (Bates, Redrawing Afrocentrism: Visual Nommo in George H. Ben
Johnson s Editorial Cartoons). Orality is the notion that the word has power and force (Howard). In
this literature review, I will review the key theorists who analyze the oratory of Nommo and their
specific definitions of Nommo. In addition, this review will make note of the evolution of Nommo and
its different applications. Lastly, this review will close with the explanation of the significance of
Nommo to communication studies. Various scholars study the idea of Nommo and the following is the
ways they define it. Theorist Molefi Assante defines Nommo as the word, which hold a transforming
power of vocal expression. Asante also says that Nommo differs from the Greek concept logos, in that
Nommo includes creative arts, such as literature, orature, and painting. These scholars define Nommo
as the creative power of the spoken word, which brings about harmony and balance (Cummings).
Cummings and Roy also states that Nommo goes beyond the mere use of words, phrases, or linguistic
conventions; it also signifies creating and sustaining of language that inform every facet of African
American life. Sheena Howard defines Nommo as a delivery style that is unique to African
Americans. Nommo is also defined as not only telling a story through spoken word, but it gives the

Internal And External Conflicts In The Time Of The Doves
Mercè Rodoreda s immersive novel, The Time of the Doves, presents numerous realistic conflicts and
their effects on an ordinary citizen. Natalia, the protagonist, is challenged with several internal and
external conflicts that range from an inability to express herself to a war fueled famine. Rodoreda uses
personal experience, as well as knowledge of the typical female role during the Spanish Civil War to
add a personal outlook on the conflicts she presents. Natalia s internal conflicts are compelling, and
can be applied to a large portion of women, in the past and today. As for the external conflict, Natalia s
sufferings with the effects of war can be applied on a cultural level to most of Spain, during the Civil
war, and universally to any war struck country.
Throughout the novel Natalia is challenged with several internal conflicts, many of which originate
from external conflict with her husband, Quimet. Natalia is a meek, mild, young woman in the
beginning of the novel, It was hard for me to say no if someone asked me to do something (15).
Quimet juxtaposes Natalia s personality in almost every way, he is obsessive, possessive, and
controlling, ...and said if I wanted to be his wife I had to start liking everything he liked (22). Quimet
persuades her to marry him and leave her fiancé, Pere. He often challenges Natalia s confidence and
persuades her to do and agree to things she is uncomfortable with, creating internal conflicts for
Natalia s inability to protest or decline. For instance, Natalia does not want Quimet to build the
dovecote and raise the doves, but does not possess the adequate confidence to voice her opinion.
Natalia is generally unable to convey her feelings of rage and discontent to the other characters, she
often remarks on her difficulty to verbally express herself to the audience.

Essay on Opium Wars
Drugs have been around for hundreds of years and it modifies normal body functions depending on
the drug. During the 19th century, the Chinese had become a victim under the dangerous drug of
Opium. When opium was first introduce in China it was like any other drug, addictive and harmful to
the human body but the Chinese weren t aware of the opium negative effects. Opium the narcotic drug
is derived of from immature seed pods of poppy plants. Opium was used for pain relieving, it was one
of the first drugs able to relieve pain before morphine was invented, and morphine is safer drug then
opium and they both came from the same plant. Before the opium war, foreign trade to Western

Strong economy is very important for every nation, especially in periods of conflicts happening, and
with a strong economy countries can support their own military by buying more weapons for better
war results. China s defeat isn t just from lack of technology into military but it s also the insufficient
funds to their military. A nation s military superiority is usually determined by how much the nation is
willing to spend on its military; we still see today the superpower of the world like United States is
known for its dominating military but their expenditure on military is extremely high which forces
their nation in debt. But China is exactly opposite of the modern United States, when they do have
money to spend, these money won t be used effectively and investing into dead end ancient weapons
like bows and spears. Another misuse of spending for the Chinese government is that they spend too
much money on arts and instead on their growing fine good s production prospering China a lot during
the Opium wars. Though China isolates them away from the rest of the world it does keep a steady
economy and the Opium wars triggered an economical boom in China which they will slowly prosper.

Elie Wiesel Memoir
Memoir is a record of events written by a person having intimate knowledge of them and based on
personal observation. It is an account of one s personal life and experiences, an autobiography. It is
really effective especially in catching the readers because the one who wrote it is also the one who
exeprerienced it. When we read a memoir we are reminded of their power to connect us to something
beyond ourselves. A memoir invites us to step into a life and an experience that are not ours. Even if
we have experienced something similar, we are able to relate, but that particular experience is not ours
to claim. And because we cannot claim that experience as our own, it exposes us to a different and
possibly broader perspective. It s that broader ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yes, I really believe that it s true. The statistics is just a list, it doesn t give you an idea of what the
Jews feel about it. It doesn t give you the idea of what the pain they ve been through. It s just easy to
say that, Oh, there s a thousand of women who were killed but we don t even know why and how the
Nazis kill them. It doesn t give a great impact on the readers because they can t relate to the story. Elie
is brave enough to tell us in details about what is happening. He became an instrument for us to know
everything. Elie s voice helped a lot for us to know how it feels to be an innocent person that is
imprisoned. During the marching and in the situation of the Jews inside the camps, they were abused,
the Nazis took their stuffs and they have nothing to wear. They didn t even given the opportunity to
have a bath and they also suffered from hunger that resulted to malnutrition. The evidences that shows
how the Jews were brutally treated by the Nazis and how the Jews were killed slowly by making them
suffer from hunger and depression really impacted the readers. By reading a story of a person you ll
learn something about him or her whose story you re reading. But more importantly, if you re open to
the possibility, you just may learn something new about

Pseudoscience Paper
Mega 1
The Impact of Pseudoscience on Consumers Pseudoscience is known by many as false science. Many
consumers are convinced by companies that sells these products provide instant cures that lead to a
healthier lifestyle. These products are scientific theories that have little evidence to back up their
scientific claims. The Internet, health food stores, magazines, and commercials are just a few ways
that companies can target potential consumers to sell their products. Medical information searched by
consumers via the Internet has become the largest source of information worldwide. Consumers search
the Internet for weight loss strategies, treatments for autism, anti aging creams, male enhancement,
and prevention of cancer and heart ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While health foods stores attract consumers to purchase health supplements, many manufacturers use
health food stores to promote their bogus products. In March 1999, the FTC filed a complaint in
federal court against the makers of Vitamin O. The company ran false ads claiming the Vitamin O
supplement prevents cancer, heart, and lung disease by adding an extra oxygen supplement to the
bloodstream. With no scientific evidence to prove the benefits of Vitamin O, the two companies from
Washington agreed to a settlement of $375,000 for consumer compensation. The settlement prohibited
the Vitamin O manufacturers from making claims that were unsupported about the Vitamin O health
benefits. Testimonials and endorsements of product represented through previous experience from
members of the public who used the product were also prohibited in the settlement. In conclusion,
marketing agents with false science beliefs have one common goal: To sell! We as consumers must be
aware and informed of unknown supplements that claims to have a great deal of impact to your life.
These products are known for its testimonials by doctors and actors that make claims of using the
product. Pseudoscience supplements have caused serious illnesses and even death due to consumers
lack of knowledge when purchasing these products. It is strongly recommended that consumers
research the companies and the product that advertise false products very carefully before purchasing
a supplement that claims to

Nirvana And The Four Noble Truths
The two ways for people to reach Nirvana was to followed the Eight fold path and the Four noble

Pilots Performance Essay
Introduction The purpose of this study is to examine the performance of pilots flying multiple types of
aircraft in an experimental setting. Pilot performance will be assessed by written tests and simulator
sessions. This study will build on a previous field study, Pilots Flying Multiple Aircraft Types or
Multiple Flightdeck Layouts, which was conducted for AVS 4504 Aviation Safety Analysis. The
results of that study showed a need for a simulator study to further identify if pilots have issues
maintaining currency in multiple types of aircraft. The following is a summary that is found in the
Pilots Flying Multiple Aircraft Types or Multiple Flightdeck Layouts field study. (Raub, 2016) In
aviation pilots rely heavily on muscle memory cognitive biases while flying. Once pilots become
familiar with a certain aircraft or flight deck layout their hands will reach for controls without needing
to look for them. Pilots will also develop certain cognitive biases in aircraft to help reduce their
workload and increase mental capacity. The fact that both muscle memory and cognitive bias are
handled in one s subconscious a pilot will not always be aware they are even occurring. Under FAA
rules there is no limit on how many different aircraft a pilot can maintain currency in under part 91.
Under part 135 pilots are generally limited maintaining currency two aircraft types. Under part 121
pilots are limited to maintaining currency in one aircraft type. This could lead to safety issues

Published in 1951, the book was originally written for adults, but it is now remembered and adored by people from all parts of the world and people from all walks of life especially by teenagers a likely effect that was only inevitable considering the center stage of the narrator the great crumby flake Holden Caulfield, to use his style of speaking, who accurately portrayed teenage angst and loneliness in a style that many youngsters could and do relate to.1 The book is about his quest to find himself after being threatened with expulsion at the expensive prep school that he attends. But it isn t easy to determine the length of this double standard because of the scarcity of good, honest conversations and discussions about and with other men and boys throughout the book. There are many women and girls that Holden Caulfield talks about, talks to, and thinks about throughout the novel. For further analysis on his relationships with them, they can be divided into three categories: figures of authority, lovers, and family. Caulfield s own mother would have been the character of choice for the first category, but since there is a scarce amount of conversation with her we ll have to default to the next most talkative female authority figure: the mother of a fellow classmate named Ernest Morrow. He met the woman on a commuter rail heading to New York from Caulfield s school dorm in Pencey Prep in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. She initiated a conversation with him after she noticed a school sticker on one of his suitcases. They mostly discussed about the school and about Ernest Morrow s personality and behavior, and of course the usual motherly inquiry of whether or not they were friends. • 3. Fayol s “Principles” in a University Library In reading through Management Basics for Information Professionals by Evans and Ward, one of the theories of management that stood out to me was the administrative approach (2007). Henry Fayol was one of the main proponents of this approach, though there were many others as well. Fayol divided organizational activities into five major groups and also identified 14 principles of management and believed that management is a skill one can learn, rather than a talent received at birth (Evans Ward, 2007). I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another of Fayol s principles had to do with authority and responsibility. In the department of the main stacks, there was a staff librarian who acted as our manager, as well as a group of students that performed supervisory tasks. In my last year or so in the library I joined this group, and was given the task of doing some of the day to day tasks that kept our department running. These included opening and closing procedures, keeping statistics of the work done by students, assigning hourly jobs, training, and so on. The important idea in this principle is that giving orders and being responsible must go together (Evans Ward, 2007). I would argue that in our department, while we were responsible for making sure the work was done as well as assigning jobs, if there was a difficult situation the supervisors were able to refer to the staff librarian for support. For example, if one student was chronically underperforming or late, we would notify the librarian. If one considered the group of supervisors plus the librarian who managed us to make up the management of the department, then in whole authority and responsibility did go together. I would also say that instead of thinking of student supervisors as not being as responsible as they could be, it would be more plausible to say that the hourly assignment of jobs and other such tasks were ones that were delegated to them by the librarian, because while he was more responsible, there was no way that he could ... Our world could be produced or simulated by some sort of machine, or life is actually just a dream someone dreamt up one night. Meaning that if we, as a single person, are the only thing that actually exists, then that proves that reality is indeed not real. But considering this point is considered Solipsism, there s enough evidence to go against it. Disproving solipsism is the key to support the idea that reality is real. The aerodynamic forces and moments that the model experience then can be compared to the real life conditions that an aircraft experiences in real time. An important in tool that allows us to find these different force is the L.A. Comp wind tunnel s pyramidal balance. This kind of balance allows aerospace engineers to measure all the force: lift, drag, and side force; as well as all the moments: pitching, yawing, and rolling [1]. Figure 1, you are able to see where each of these forces are action and along which axis. Figure 1: Forces and Moments on an Aircraft It is important to understand where all these forces and moments are acting on an aircraft to understand how each one affects and aircraft. A crucial step before actually gathering these force and moments is to calibrate our balance. The objective of this experiment was to calibrate the L.A. Comp wind tunnel and to develop calibration plots that will later be used in future experiments. The L. A. The US is therefore left to decide whether or not to continue subsidizing these countries or leaving them to pick up their own economic mess. Yet, bribes can cost the economy big money because essentially the corrupt businessmen are taking the money away from public services (111). The issues coming up in the future are that the governments that are corrupt might have negative impacts on other global economies and spread the norm of corruption. Yet, both countries do show the will to purify the Party which includes newly implemented rules against gluttony, adultery, and even playing golf under the leadership of Wang Qishan (113). Once the Africans got their independence they could not be separated from their home countries. Intricate ties between the colonies and home countries they could not be so easily broken. Effect of Organic Farming on Soil Nutrients and Structure Works Cited Missing Since the 1970s, the agribusiness and agrochemical industries have been aware of a growing problem: as the global population soars, soils around the world are becoming less suitable for farming as a result of erosion, nutrient depletion, and structural degradation. In the United States, about 60,000 farmers have abandoned the conventional system which relies on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and adopted the organic farming systems that allowed areas of China and India to be successfully farmed for 4,000 years (Reganold et al., 1990, p. 112). While humic matter has some intrinsic water storing properties, it is possible that some of the increased water levels are a result of the erosion of finer particles on the conventional farm, which lost 32.4 ton/ha of topsoil a year, four times that of the organic farm (Reganold et al., 1987, p. 371). Jordahl and Karlen (1993) observed that the soil on a conventional Iowa farm had significantly less silt and clay than a similar soil from an adjacent organic farm, suggesting that the fine materials had been eroded away (p. 29). The high humus levels are responsible for the erosion resistance documented on organic farms. High levels of organic matter increases aggregate stability, which prevents erosion, allows for easier water and mechanical (such as plow and root) penetration, and better aeration. Soil aggregates are stabilized primarily by micro organisms and polysaccharides, a product of many bacteria. Experiments by Molope and Page (1986) indicate that fungi play a key role in binding soil particles together. In the development of aggregates, fungi mycelia (root like structures) provide the initial support in the first six days of ped development after disaggregation (from oxidation as a result of plowing or heavy rain) (p. 236.) These attitudes refer to the individuals reactions to anything associated with the immediate context (e.g., the course and the teaching environment) in which the language is taught (Gardner, 1985).All the men show higher instrumental motivation towards foreign language learning than woman. • 20. Aristotelian Vs. Aristotelian Ethics Essay In this paper, I will refute the claims made by Aristotelian and other virtue ethics systems in their suggestion that it is good for you to be virtuous and the Aristotelian claim that being virtuous is how you can live good life. I will do this by showing that in attempting to be virtuous you are subjecting yourself to unreasonable and unachievable levels of personal expectation. I will then suggest that this becomes even more counter intuitive when you become aware that you cannot even guarantee you would achieve the good life should you manage to meet the expectations you are placing on yourself. I will argue instead that you are better off trying to focus on something else within reach and within which you have a better chance of living your own good life and achieving your goals of being a good person the helping of others. In his Nicomachean ethics Aristotle suggests that virtue is a purposive disposition, lying in a mean that is relative to us ... and by that which a prudent man would use to determine it (Aristotle. et al., 2004: Book II). This in itself brings the concept of Aristotelian virtue to its most concerning trait; if doing what is virtuous is to do as a virtuous person would then we are given little direction as to what to do, especially on a circumstantial basis, beyond a difficult to define idea of what a virtuous person would do . For one, the Scottish have trouble defining what Scottish culture is, this is because they joined the UK at a very early time. Because of this, much of Scottish culture has joined together with English culture. This could be seen when we were walking around Glasgow and saw many English Art and sculptures, as well as walking around the Holyrood house in Edenborough. And now that Scotland may break away from England, the people cling to fantasy and mystery, as well as their own accomplishments to create and define Scottish culture. In Glasgow, the Peoples Palace displayed many accomplishments of the cities people, all stating that they were the first to invent this and the first to do that. Instead of looking back, the city showed how it was progressive and urged its people to move forward. In Edenborough, the tour guide talked about how they were the first to invent skyscrapers and other architecture. Instead of talking about how the country moved forward as a whole, each city talked about how they moved forward and the people in it. Scotland has also clung to many mythological and fantasy ideals. For one, the national animal of Scotland is the Unicorn, which is a mythological creature. Also, during the ghost tour I took around Edenborough, the Scottish believe that they invented Halloween and the city is filled with ghost stories. Even in the north, Loch ... It was renamed from the Shire of Roebourne to the City of Karratha on the 1st of July 2014. The surrounding region contains the Burrup Peninsula an area filled with petroglyphs, engravings in the rock which have been around for over 30,000 years. This is evidence of occupation of the Aboriginal people in this area and may even show a sign of the world s first counting system. The mining industry in the area has boomed, and the City of Karratha is now home to many people working in the industry. The iron ore in the area is of particular interest. The Burrup Peninsula is not particularly cared for. There are acts of vandalism by tourists and locals alike who sign their names on prehistoric artworks unfortunately, this can damage the rock art and can cover the artwork that proves human inhabitancy from over 30,000 years ago. Vandalism would be bad enough for the rock art alone but the Western Australian government shows no signs of stopping its approval of the many mining developments in the region. Unfortunately, this rock art cannot be replaced or removed without serious damage the whole area is rich in resources, so the mining developments could be moved, or at least new developments approved away from these sites. In several cases petroglyphs have been removed for the sake of mining in the Burrup Peninsula. For example, approximately 150 petroglyphs were removed to make room for a natural ... • 24. The Effects Of Antidepressant Pills On Teenagers And... Jacqueline Mendez Mrs. Kehrmeyer AP English 9 February 2016 Teenagers and Antidepressants In recent discussions of antidepressant pills a controversial issue has been whether doctors should prescribe antidepressants to teenagers. Antidepressant pills are prescribed to individuals who suffer from a condition called Major Depression Disorder, labeled MDD for abbreviation. Major Depressive Disorder is a mental disorder characterized by a pervasive and persistent low mood that is accompanied by low self esteem and by loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities. The objectives of antidepressant pills are to stabilize, and normalize the abnormal low levels of brain chemicals for those who suffer from MDD. On the other hand, some argue that antidepressants are harmful and do a disadvantage to teenagers, therefore should not be prescribed to them. However, others argue that the pills are not harmful and in some cases the strong need of antidepressants outweigh the risks the pills might provide. Antidepressants prevent teenagers from recuperating on their own and prevents them from learning how to cope with conflicts thus, they should not be prescribed. Depression results in symptoms such as sadness, it affects a person s emotions and leads to both emotional and physical problems. The antidepressant pills are meant to help the brain recuperate and adjust to normality. The reason why people reconsider taking the pills in the first place is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. A Single Story Analysis When Adichie refers to a single story, she is describing that a person or group of people may be disillusioned due to their lack of exposure to other perspectives and ideas. For instance, Adichie states that when she read American and European storybooks as a child, all of the characters were of the white race and exemplified white characteristics, leading to an ignorant and close minded depiction of the world. Moreover, when Adichie began reading African literature, she found that people like me, girls with skin the color of chocolate, whose kinky hair could not form ponytails, could also exist in literature (Adichie 1:07). This illustrates that in both African and European literature, characterization is limited to the demographics known to the writers, the story is restricted based on one s viewpoint. Furthermore, the danger in simply reading or writing a single story is that over time, a person, or group of people, can become bias due to their lack of exposure to cultural and ethnical diversity. For example, Adichie describes that when she met the family of Fide, her houseboy, and saw that one of Fide s brothers had woven a beautiful basket she was taken aback because it had become impossible for me to see them as anything else but poor. Their poverty was my single story for them (Adichie 3:43). This seemingly minor misconception exposes Adichie to the dangers of following a single story , a reality check which changed her perception of the world. Furthermore, the ... Scholars who have studied these sketchbooks have discovered the agonizingly long process that the composer went through in order to perfect his melodies, harmonies, and instrumentations. Three Periods of Work Most critics divide Beethoven s work into three general periods, omitting the earliest years of his apprenticeship in Bonn. Rodoreda uses personal experience, as well as knowledge of the typical female role during the Spanish Civil War to add a personal outlook on the conflicts she presents. As for the external conflict, Natalia s sufferings with the effects of war can be applied on a cultural level to most of Spain, during the Civil war, and universally to any war struck country. Throughout the novel Natalia is challenged with several internal conflicts, many of which originate from external conflict with her husband, Quimet. Natalia is a meek, mild, young woman in the beginning of the novel, It was hard for me to say no if someone asked me to do something (15).
